From robots to BMX: Speedway inspires youth with STEM-themed weekend
Anthony Victor Reyes/Daily News Perfection on Wheels BMX team members show off their gravity defying stunts Friday at Iowa Speedway. The group performed several shows throughout the weekend festivities.
By Anthony Victor Reyes Newton Daily News Several young race fans entered the Iowa Speedway gates Saturday itching for more fast-pace action. Decked out in NASCAR gear, a radio headset and an Iowa Speedway flag, the young race-enthusiasts were amped up after witnessing an epic race Friday, as 17-year-old NASCAR Next driver, Todd Gilliland dominated his competition by leading all but the first two laps of the 150-lap race at
the Casey’s General Stores 150 presented by Vatterott College at Iowa Speedway. The kids were inspired by the racers. They wondered what it was like to be behind the wheel. They were interested in learning more. “I just like watching the races because they are cool to watch,” 8-yearold Dino Dzafic said Saturday. “I like how fast it is.” Luckily for the young race lovers, Iowa Speedway gave them the opportunity to learn more by wrapping up their 2017 racing season by combin-
Newton native joins NPD By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A Newton native is now patrolling the streets with the police department. Officer Brandon Blom has been on the force since mid-May and is excited to be on the job in his hometown. “I have learned a lot more about Newton that I didn’t know, which is surprising since I have lived here my whole life,” Blom said. “It is crazy how much you see different things when you are working, especially the night life in Newton.” The 2012 Newton High School graduate said he’s always wanted to work in law enforcement but BLOM | 3A

But in reality, it all goes so well together,” Dino’s uncle, Nihad Dzafic said. “These cars they are driving our next gen, just like everything else that is coming up.” Throughout the weekend, Iowa Speedway had several STEM displays for racegoers to interact with. 18-year-old burglary suspect escapes custody, rearrested Newton Daily News An 18-year-old Newton man is facing charges of attempted burglary and escape from custody following a Tuesday morning incident. Police were called to a residence at 6:30 a.m. on West Second Street North in response to a burglary to a vehicle. A witness told police there were two suspects, one wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and brown jeans and the other wearing a gray hooded Reeves sweatshirt and blue jeans. According to the witness, one suspect walked to the neighbor’s house and attempted to enter their vehicle, while the other stayed on the street. The witness yelled at the suspects and they ran off before entering the vehicle, according to police. Police made contact with two individuals who matched the witness’s description in the 1400 block of West Fourth Street North. Reeves was identified as one of the individuals and a juvenile was identified as the other suspect, according to a police report. Reeves and the juvenile suspect were arrested that morning but escaped from the squad car, according to a police report. Reeves allegedly distracted the officer as the other suspect reached through the bars on the window and opened the door from the outside. The suspects fled and were not located. Reeves was arrested at 7:55 p.m. Thursday on warrants for burglary and escape. Reeves was additionally charged for having 1.5 grams of marijuana. Reeves was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
Miller inducted into autoharp HoF By David Dolmage Newton Daily News After his mother passed away Steve Miller was at a loss. He knew what an impact her life had made on his own, and he wanted to find a way to let the world know how important she’d been. Dora Miller was enshrined in the autoharp Hall of Fame this year, thanks to efforts of her son, who wanted to preserve the work his mother had done. The autoharp, a musical instrument that is part of
the chorded zither family, found fame in hands of country music stars like Maybelle and Janette Carter. An anniversary gift from her husband, ordered from the pages of the Sears catalog, would change Dora Miller’s life. Miller taught herself to play the autoharp, and it wasn’t long before she felt the urge to connect with other musicians. “She just liked it so much that she started playing all the time,” Steve AUTOHARP | 3A
David Dolmage/Daily News The chair where Dora Miller would sit and play the autoharp still has one of her songbooks sitting on the arm of the chair.
