Council looks to fill open seat by appointment By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News
The Newton City Council will look to fill the vacant council seat by appointment at its Aug. 7 meeting. The at-large seat opened with the resignation of councilwoman Lin Chapé on July 11.
“This is a position that will be done in December of this year,” councilwoman Evelyn George said. According to Iowa Code, a city council may choose to fill the vacancy of a seat by appointment. In order to begin the process, council approved city staff to publish a notice of intent to
fill the seat by appointment. Any citizen interested in the position must submit their name, address, phone number and a brief biographic history to the city clerk at city hall, 101 W. Fourth St. S., no later than 4:30 p.m. Aug. 1. After reviewing all submissions, council will appointment
a temporary council member during its Aug. 7 meeting. Councilman Craig Trotter questioned the reasoning behind appointment with the election less than four months away and the council still maintaining a quorum. According to Iowa Code, the council has a 60 day deadline to appoint someone to
Residents Relate: Ridiculous Races are really fun
7 teams compete Saturday in second annual Ridiculous Races By David Dolmage Newton Daily News With an admonishment not to throw any elbows, Amanda Price sent her seven teams hunting through downtown Newton on Saturday for the Ridiculous Races. The event, sponsored by the Newton Chamber of Commerce, is a challenge that pits teams against each other while they visit local businesses and search for clues throughout the community.
Price, the executive director of the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, said she created the event to help bring attention and awareness to local businesses in the community. It also didn’t hurt that she’s a big fan of the CBS television show The Amazing Race. “I’ve always been kind of obsessed with the show,” Price said. “I actually wish I was able to participate, it’s really fun making everything.” This year, four local businesses participated in the Ri-
diculous Race, Mattingly Music and Book Store, Mojo Cycling, Fine Things Reclaimed, and E-Clips. With seven teams competing, Price has seen interest in the event nearly double in only two years. While Price’s goal is for teams to have fun, she hopes by visiting local businesses, contestants will see something that brings them back into the business, creating more customers for local stores. “We want to try and get people into these businesses, and get them more business,” Price said. fill the seat before the process begins to hold a special election to fill the seat. The proximity of the election to the resignation does not have any barring on the council’s need to fill the seat.
For Brett Moffitt, there really is no place like home. Moffit, a Grimes native and NASCAR Xfinity Series driver, was back in Iowa Thursday to meet with kids in Ankeny and check out the racecars that they’ve been building. The program, part of the Ankeny Adventures Summer Camp, is designed to teach kids about STEM, while also demonstrating the real application of those skills. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, is part of an initiative to increase those skills in students and to give them
a competitive edge. Nancy Jeffs, the director of Ankeny’s before and after school programs, said that helping students find fun ways to build their STEM skills is part of what the Ankeny Adventures Summer Camp is all about. “We try to focus on enrichment labs that are hands on and fun,”Jeffs said. “We want to connect to their regular life and school activities.” This is the second year that participants in the camp have had a chance to interact with NASCAR. Last year campers took a field trip to the Iowa Speedway, and this year, after learning about friction, they designed and MOFFITT | 3A

Mad Science brings imaginative learning to NPL Kayla Langmaid/ Daily News Owner of Mad Science of Central Iowa Jim Birkel shows volunteers how to build an arch during the Mad Science program at the Newton Public Library.
By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News The owner of Mad Science of Central Iowa brought a number of hands-on experiments to the Newton Public Library Friday as a part of the youth summer reading program. More than 20 children and parents sat in awe of the many mini-explosions and demolitions constructed by Jim Birkel, owner of Mad Science of Central Iowa. Birkel has visited the Newton Public Library five times before, but his enthusiasm for teaching children hasn’t altered.

The summer reading program at NPL is titled “Build a Better World.” Birkel said he wanted to incorporate that theme into the experiments he conducted. One by one, Birkel chose volunteers, and children took a crack at demolishing a tower of blocks, building an arch and popping a balloon with a remote control. Four children volunteered to put together their version of the St. Louis Arch out of Styrofoam blocks and Velcro. Other experiments focused on the importance of technology and engineering.
