Newton residents find plenty of ways to cool off during an excessive heat warning By David Dolmage Newton Daily News In the midst of high heat and humidity Newton residents cooled off the best way they could; they went to the pool. The Fred C. Maytag pool in Newton, located at 310 S 11th Ave. W., was packed on Thursday afternoon, as Newton residents tried to cool off as the heat index soared to more than a 100 degrees.

As temperatures soar this week, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for central Iowa, including Newton. Residents are advised to stay inside, and seek out cooling centers if their homes aren’t air conditioned. While the high temperatures are projected to be in the mid 90s the combination of warm weather and high humidity has pushed the heat index more than 100 degrees. Some

forecasts have projected Friday’s heat index to reach 110 degrees. During an excessive heat warning, residents are advised to be watchful for heat related illnesses, including dehydration and heat related exhaustion. Dosey-doe Residents of Newton Village participate in Barn Dance By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News Newton Village residents had a chance to lace up their dancing shoes and participate in a three-day dance calling activity. The polished dancers practiced for two days before debuting their learned routines. Reid Miller, of Ames, led the group as he called out various dance movements all

to the tune of folk music. Miller specializes in encouraging people of all ages to be active and social, and he did just that. Residents, staff and children volunteers all grabbed a dancing partner. The moves varied in difficulty but all residents had a chance to participate. Basic movements included side-toside, clapping and arm movements all while sitting down.

Residents who were restricted to wheel chairs or walkers were able to participate in a parade of dance movements. As staff and volunteers pushed residents around the room, the caller would yell out different things, such as, “everyone walk to the right, everyone walk to the middle of the floor or everyone present their jazz fingers.” DANCE | 3A
