Inmate aids prison staffer after another inmate’s attack NEWTON (AP) — Authorities say an inmate helped a prison staffer after the staffer was assaulted by another inmate at the Iowa prison in Newton. The Iowa Corrections Department says inmate John Watson assaulted the staffer around 9 a.m. Wednesday. The other inmate aided the staffer until other prison workers arrived to help. The staffer was taken to a hospital for treatment and then released. The department says Watson has been in prison since February 2014 for robbery and burglary convictions in Pottawattamie County.

Justin Jagler/Daily News The Newton YMCA recently expanded its wellness area to include more strength-training equipment and improve the overall flow of the facility.

Free admission to Newton YMCA next week By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News Jasper County residents can use the Newton YMCA free of charge from July 5 through July 9, as the facility celebrates the Fourth of July. The Independence Day giveaway will allow locals to use everything that’s available to YMCA members, including new cardio and strength equipment, indoor track, two gyms, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam rooms, weight room and fitness classes. “We’re thrilled with all the great changes we’ve made to our facility this past year, and we’re excited to

show the community what a wonderful place the Newton YMCA is,” said Associate Executive Director Rhonda Robson. The Newton YMCA recently wrapped up some major renovations, including redoing the guts of the pool, adding exercise equipment in an expanded wellness area, installing new soundboards in the big gym and adding another fitness studio. The building, which first opened in 1976, also completely redid its lobby bathrooms, expanded its storage space and installed new private changing rooms. New members can also

take advantage of a special $10 first-month fee if they sign up the week of the holiday. A special fitness class schedule is set for the week, too, with the newest LesMills BodyPump release launching Saturday, Robson said. The Newton YMCA will be closed Monday and Tuesday, but there is still a 5:15 a.m. boot camp with Chad Robson scheduled for Monday at H.A. Lynn Stadium, weather permitting. Boot camps with Chad at the YMCA are also scheduled for Wednesday and Friday mornings at 5:15 a.m. YMCA | 3A

Shaw Media, owner of the Newton Daily News, has purchased the Monroe Legacy from Kathleen and Al Darrach, both parties announced this week. The sale will be effective Saturday. The Monroe Legacy — formerly the Monroe Mirror Newspaper — has been reporting local news in Monroe, Reasnor and Otley for 144 years. It’s been operated by the Burman family for the last 67 years, with Kathleen (Burman) Darrach as editor/publisher for nearly three decades. “It has been a real pleasure serving Monroe as editor and publisher for 27 years,” Darrach said. “The Monroe newspaper, having been in the family for 67 years, made the decision to sell the Monroe Legacy a difficult one. Surgeries have proven to us that it is time we have more flexibility and are able to have nights and weekends off of work while continuing with our other ventures.” Newton Daily News Publisher Dan Goetz will also serve as publisher of the Monroe Legacy. “We are looking forward to serving the Monroe community,” Goetz said. “Kathleen and Al Darrach have served Monroe well by publishing a great community newspaper for many years, and we look forward to continuing that tradition.” Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated family newspaper company in the nation. In addition to the Newton Daily News, Prairie City News and Jasper County Tribune, it operates newspaper properties in suburban Chicago, northern Illinois and southwestern Iowa. Mike Mendenhall has been editor of the Prairie City News and Jasper County Tribune since April 2014 and will lead the editorial staff at the Monroe Legacy. The team includes reporter and Monroe native Jamee Pierson, graphic designer and long-time Prairie City resident Dana King and reporter and Newton resident Anthony Victor Reyes. “In our coverage of the PCM school district, we’ve already come to know many fantastic people in Monroe,” Mendenhall said. “Monroe readers can still expect to see familiar faces out and about reporting the news and working with costumers. I look forward to carrying on Kathleen and Al’s momentum, and expand the Legacy’s coverage of people, events and news in this great town.”

Cardinal Ridge sale to go before city council

The number and location of downtown city handicapped parking spaces is currently under review by city council. Council passed the first reading of an ordinance adding spaces to city parking lots and removing a space due to an insufficient access aisle. “Staff received a request to improve handicapped parking in the city owned parking lot located at the northeast corner of First Street South and South Second Avenue East,” city administrator Matt Muckler said. The Traffic Safety Committee discussed the handicapped parking spaces in the downtown area, finding, as a part of the summer paint program, two additional handicapped
