New Home Run Derby highlights Newton’s Fourth of July events By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News American Innovations: Famous Firsts is the theme for the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July celebration and the event is seeing a few new firsts for 2017. Starting at 9:30 a.m. with the annual Fourth of July Parade and activities planned until the first fireworks explode in the sky at dusk, the celebration has a little something for everyone. “Our newest event is the Home Run Derby at Agnes Patterson Park,”

chamber executive director Amanda Price said. “This was something that came out of myself and Nathan Unsworth, before he left, with the parks board thinking it would be fun to have a Home Run Derby or something else at the park besides just the sand volleyball tournament..” The derby, sponsored by Great Western Bank, will start with registration from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the girl’s lower, north softball fields, 300 N. Newton location included in multi-county federal search Newton Daily News A large scale, multi-county federal search warrant operation conducted on Wednesday included a location in Newton. Officers from the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force — East executed a search in the 800 block of East Sixth Street North, one of more than 20 locations where searched were carried out. According to a report released by Southern District of Iowa United States Attorney Kevin E. Vander Schel, warrants were issued in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Grimes, Pleasant Hill and Maxwell along with the Newton location. Six individuals were charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine as a result of the searches. They include Shannon Lee Paxton, 46, of Des Moines, Kerry Drew Haegele, 47, of Des Moines, Fidel Rios, Jr., 34, of Pasco, Washington, Kira Fallis, 26, of Elkhart, John Archer, 52, of Des Moines and Charles Astley, 63, of Des Moines. The searches were an official law enforcement action involving officers, agents and investigators from the Des Moines Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa State Patrol and Central Iowa Drug Task Force along with the MINE Task Force — East.

A Newton Cardinal super fan and an active community member are just a few ways that this year’s Fourth of July parade Grand Marshal has been described. David Ratliff, 37, is full of hometown pride and that is why he was selected by the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce earlier this month. After Ratliff found out one of his coworkers from the Newton Clinic nominated him to be grand marshal, he had only one thing to say, “Awesome!” Emma Morris penned the nomination letter in honor of Ratliff. Newton Fire Department responds to abandoned house fire Newton Daily News The Newton Fire Department responded to an abandoned house fire Wednesday morning. Fire Marshal Mike Knoll said the fire department responded around 6:13 a.m. to a residence at 702 E. Fourth St. N. Knoll said the fire started in the attic of the home. “The fire was coming through the southeast corner of the home’s

roof,” Knoll said. “It didn’t take us too long to put the fire out.” The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Knoll said it is unknown if the owner of the home lives locally. “There was a lot of junk inside the home,” Knoll said. There were no injuries reported.

through a first reading of a proposed policy. It was still a rough draft, and no action was taken at Monday’s meeting. The crux of the policy draft states “under no circumstances will a student be denied a meal.” Board members discussed

David Ratliff is a 2000 Newton High School graduate, and while he was in high school he showed a true passion for Cardinal sports. “He likes to go to about any kind of ball game — basketball, football, baseball and soccer,” Ann said. “He goes to the games with his friend Steve Knight.” Ann said David has always been really outgoing and friendly. “His personality makes a big difference, and he knows everybody,” Ann said. “When he was in high school he was the manager of the basketball team and most people in special education might not
