Fans pass love for racing to next generation at Iowa Speedway’s opening races By Anthony Victor Reyes Newton Daily News

With every major sport, there are always super fans. Racing is no different. Some paint their faces. Others wear flamboyant get-ups. One fan from Des Moines shows her love for the sport in another way — by turning her husband’s hair into a true work of art. “We’ve been out here since 2006, when (Iowa Speedway) opened. I’ve got pins from 2007 and

inaugural 2006,” Cory Byrd said. “I love racing since I played with my little sizzler cars (when I was little).” Saturday, NASCAR fans complimented, high-fived and took selfies with Cory as he showed off his new mohawk, specifically designed for the American Ethanol E15 250 Presented by Enogen at Iowa Speedway. Have you ever sweat a rainbow? Well, if you were at this year’s Color Spash N Dash at Newton High School Saturday morning, you know exactly what that is all about. “I like getting colored,” 5-year-old participant, Kate Arkema said. “The run made me feel tired.” As if it was straight out of a Skittles commercial, 86 5K participants left the school on East Fourth Street South a little fatigued, a little sore and covered in splashes

of color. Attendees said the event was worth the mess because they were able to help a good cause while doing something healthy and fun. “Anytime there is a fundraiser for a school function at any school, we like to help. Budgets get tight. Anything you are able to help those students, the athletes, the cheerleaders, the arts,” Kate’s father and participant, Darin said. “It was fun ... To be out, do some walking, do some running and being healthy is great.” DASH | 3A

Those are three reasons Project AWAKE Board Member Jamie Sawin gave the Newton Parks Board to start the Newton Rocks Program. “We have a lovely facility out on the east end of town and one of our goals is to get more people to use it,” Sawin said. “We saw this piece on the news one morning where a group from Northeast Ohio was painting rocks, hiding them with a sticker on the back saying, ‘if you find this rock, post your picture on Facebook and re-hide the rock.’ It seemed like a simple thing but they now have 161,892 people who are involved in that project.”
