School board approves NHS parking lot project By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News Newton High School will have a re-surfaced south parking lot, following the Newton Community School District Board’s approval at Monday night’s regular meeting. Bishop Engineering put together the plans for the new parking lot and opened it for bids on June 8. The school board approved the sole bid for the project, which came from Manatts, Inc. for $482,260. The construction project, which is part of the district’s 10-year plan, will also include replacing the concrete around the high school’s greenhouse. The original estimated cost for the project was as high as $550,000. Construction is scheduled to start later this month. Also on Monday, the board approved special inspection services for the new Berg Middle School construction. The low bid came from Braun Intertec Corp. for about $95,000. Braun Intertec beat two competing bids by more than $30,000. The inspection services are used to test soil, concrete, structure and more during the construction process. The Berg construction will be the first time Braun Intertec has worked in central Iowa, said Superintendent Bob Callaghan. NCSD | 3A

OLFAX — Whether it be for the prize money or to preserve the long-standing cowboy traditions, there is no doubt it takes a special kind of person to participate in a rodeo. For observers and riders alike, there is no greater thrill than a person giving it their all in an attempt to tame a bucking, four-legged beast in the center of a crowded arena. And what better way to kick off the Jasper County Fair. “I think bull riding is everyone’s favorite. There is a lot of excitement. There is a lot of risk. There is a lot of danger. I think everybody likes to watch that,” Jasper County Fair Round Up

Committee member, Alan Guy said. “Who doesn’t like to go to the rodeo and enjoy the evening with friends and family.” The cowboys, cowgirls and their hoofed companions return to the fairgrounds Saturday for the third annual Jasper County Fair Round Up. Downtown Micro-Grant Program continues for city By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Downtown Micro-Grant Program will receive a fresh set of funds for future renovation work. City council approved $100,000 to replenish the program, which was nearing the end of its initial $100,000 allocation. “If you walk in the downtown area and you see the progress that has been made, the eyes on the city are there, that is what people see. I am a strong supporter of this program,” councilwoman Lin Chapé said. The micro-grant program was established in 2016 as a way
to encourage downtown owners to reinvest in their property and businesses in accordance with the Downtown Historic District Design Guidelines. The initial $100,000 to fund the program was set aside from the dollar bonded in 2015. Prior to the approval, $96,150 of the grant funds had been awarded. To go along with the awarded funds, $156,754 of private investment has been put into downtown project, exceeding the 1:1 match required by the program. Additional application requests have been received by the city for future projects that the Downtown Grant Review
Board have not yet reviewed or approved. The requests total about $10,000. Also, additional property owners are working on plans that could qualify for the program. “In a short time that we have been utilizing this program and we have almost depleted the $100,000 that we had originally funded towards that program along with almost $157,000 of personal investment money has been put into that. It has by far exceeded what the city has done and our requirement at the time was a 1:1 match,” councilwoman Miranda Kulis said. “I look when I am walking GRANTS | 3A

City to extend sanitary sewer system By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The city, working with the Jasper County Health Department, is extending N e w t o n’s sanitary sewer system. A public hearing was held and city council approved s e v e r a l properties on East 12th Muckler Street North and North 15th Avenue East to join the city’s sewer system. “Staff has had discussions with the Jasper County Health Department about
these properties being connected to the city’s sanitary sewer system due to failing or inadequate septic systems,” city administrator Matt Muckler said. Currently, the sanitary sewer system does not extend far enough to reach the property in the 1200 through 1400 blocks of East 12th Street North and the 1200 block of North 15th Avenue East and they on private septic systems. To get the properties in the system, the Newton Public Works Department prepared plans and specifications for the expansion. The project includes 908 LF of 8-inch sanitary sewer main,
