Metallica lights up Newton
Rock legends’ Iowa Speedway show benefits the Native Fund By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News “Tonight, we’re all Iowans,” said metal legend James Hetfield to tens of thousands of screaming Metallica fans at the band’s Iowa Speedway concert Friday night. All proceeds from the massive spectacle in little Newton benefited the Native Fund, which provides assistance to Iowans in their times of need. Hetfield said the band was glad to be here
to support a good cause. Metallica didn’t delve too deep into heart-warming speeches, however. The band was in Newton to rock, and it delivered supremely. The band ripped through a searing setlist, featuring songs off their latest album “Hardwired … to Self-Destruct” and many older fan favorites. The instrumentals were precise. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett’s fingers moved like
lightning across the fretboard. Bassist Robert Trujillo delivered the low end with attitude and enthusiasm. Drummer Lars Ulrich’s no-nonsense drumming style kept up through the more than two-hour set. Hetfield’s vocals were undeniable. In his world-famous growl, he gave shout-outs to Newton mid-song on multiple occasions. One METALLICA | 3A

Quarry Springs rocks on in Colfax despite heat, competing events By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News COLFAX — When the nonprofit Colfax Park and Recreation Auxiliary Board set the date for Saturday’s Rock the Quarry concert, organizers thought they’d hit the jackpot — a late spring date with little competition from Newton or Des Moines events.
But the calender quickly began to be filled with Newton Fest, a surprise concert by Metallica in Newton the night before, Winefest and Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in Des Moines. Couple that with a 95 degree evening, and the second annual Quarry Springs Park concert fundraiser held its own. Before the opening act — Iowa rock-blues band Big Bad
Wolf — took the stage at 6 p.m., park and rec auxiliary promotions and marketing chair Patrick Utz said volunteers had 150 pre-sale tickets at $10 a piece for Saturday’s Rock the Quarry. “We didn’t sell quite as many pre-sale tickets as last year, so we weren’t sure what kind of crowd we would get. But I’d say we’re getting there as far as what wanted,” he said.

Combined with ticket sales at the gate, the crowd gathered at the 480-acre park off Interstate 80 in Colfax did hit the 150 mark. A final fundraising total was not available by presstime Monday. But the big change this year, Utz said, is sponsorship. Businesses is Colfax, Prairie City and Quarry | 8A
A 20-year-old Kellogg resident was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Poweshiek County Thursday night. Riley J. Ely was reported dead on arrival by the Iowa State Patrol at an accident that also involved Kyle A. Sadler, 20, of Grinnell at 10:51 p.m. on 120th Street near Malcom. According to the state patrol, the vehicles were traveling southbound on 120th Street, and for an unknown reason, Sadler’s Chevrolet Silverado truck hit the rear of Ely’s Ford Mustang causing it to go into the ditch, roll and catch fire. Ely, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. Sadler was transported to Grinnell Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. The Poweshiek County Sheriff and Malcom Fire Department also assisted on the accident. Contact Jamee A.
