At Monday’s regular meeting, the Newton Community School Board of Education will consider approval of the Newton High School parking lot re-surfacing project. Before the board votes, there will be a public hearing at 6:45 p.m. inside the EJH Beard Administration Center regarding the parking lot construction. The board approved construction documents

for the project and authorized Bishop Engineering to receive bids for the project at its last meeting in May. At that time, the estimated cost for the new parking lot was between $480,000 and $550,000. The new parking lot is part of NCSD’s 10-year plan. If approved, construction is scheduled to start June 19. The re-surfacing project is set for the school’s south parking lot, which is decades old and littered with pot holes. PARKING | 3A

Having a plan and gauging accomplishments is important for any organization. Jasper County Health Department Administrator Becky Pryor gave an update on the 2016-2017 Strategic Plan to the Jasper County Board of Health on Tuesday as the year wraps up at the end of June. “There as been so many things in public

health because it is a new program. We are always doing something different all of the time,” Pryor said. “Whether it be the grants we are working on, school audits were new last fall, emergency preparedness and a lot of different grants, including walkability.” A big priority for the department is to move to a new location with ample amount of space and better accommodations HEALTH | 3A

Ladies night at Westwood Golf Course By Pam Rodgers Newton Daily News Attention golfers, it’s ladies night! The Westwood Golf Course in Newton hosts a special ladies night event every Tuesday in the summer from the last Tuesday in May through the last Tuesday August. The focus of the day is to invite ladies to the golf course to have an evening of fun and also have the opportunity to get in some golfing. “What we are stressing very much this season is fun. We are trying to get out of the ‘ladies league night’ because it sounds serious and competitive. We are trying to express the fun part most of all,” Westwood Golf Pro Brad Sponseller said. The tee is reserved from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday. If the reserved tee times don’t work, ladies are allowed to come out at any time during the day that works for them.

Pam Rodgers/Daily News First-time golfer, Mindi Noel, of Newton, hits a tee shot during a recent Ladies Night at Westwood Golf Course. “It’s a fun night to get out with the girls and enjoy some sunshine,” she said.

“They can play at any point during the day. We aren’t organized to the point where you have to come out at a certain time. We’ve had ladies play in the morn-

ing and in the afternoon. They just make their own tee times,” event organizer Chris Wickett said. LADIES | 8A
