Rep. Loebsack tours Berg Middle School, talks energy efficiency By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack stopped in Newton Wednesday morning to meet Newton Community School District staff and tour Berg Middle School. NCSD Superintendent Bob Callaghan highlighted the construction documents and showed Loebsack and state Sen. Chaz Allen drawings of the new building. Shovels will hit the dirt Friday morning for the new Berg. Callaghan took Loebsack and Allen through the old Berg and explained some of the problems with the 1960s-built school,
which include recurring mold, standing water collecting in the basement and heating and air conditioning complications. “It’s an inadequate space in a variety of ways, so a new space was needed,” Loebsack said. “I’m really glad that the tax payers here, the citizens here in Newton, have supported what they’re going to be doing.” Loebsack recently introduced legislation to modernize public schools and make them more energy efficient. The Renew America’s Schools Act would provide $100 million per year for five years to create a federal grant program to up-

date school facilities, which he said will save taxpayer dollars by cutting down on energy costs. “This is something that I think is really important right now,” Loebsack said. “I think that more and more people are looking at energy efficiency, not only for their homes and their businesses, but for schools as well.” During the representative’s tour of Berg, teachers were working on professional development in the school’s library. Loebsack took a few minutes for an impromptu conversation with NCSD teachers. BERG | 3A

Local man volunteers to monitor eagle nests By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News
David Raymond’s camera lens captures many activities, including his 11 grandchildren’s football games, softball games and dance recitals, which are all equally important to him. Another hobby of Raymond’s is monitoring numerous eagle nests in Jasper County to ensure they remain healthy and unharmed. Raymond, of Newton, volunteers with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and participates in a statewide monitoring program in which he submits an annual evaluation of what he observes. Raymond said he is required to monitor the nests three times a year and he has been monitoring the same nests in the Kellogg area for three years. The bald eagle was removed from the Threatened and Endangered species list in 2007 after there were dangerously low numbers of the species in the 1960s and 1970s, according to Raymond. The Iowa DNR established the monitoring program in 2010 as a way to “collect data on the activity and productivity

After that experience, Raymond and his wife Dorothy visited their first eagle nest near Rock Creek State Park. “The eggs had just been laid and we sat on this hill that perfectly
