A picturesque day greeted visitors to Newton Union Cemetery for the Memorial Day Service on Monday. Arranged and sponsored by the Jasper County Veterans Council, the ceremony honored those veterans who served valiantly for the United States, some paying the ultimate sacrifice. Levi Pence, who served as emcee, announced the joint posting of colors by the American Legion Post III, VFW Post 1655 and Jasper County Vietnam Veterans to begin the service. The American Flag, along

with flags representing each branch of the military, the veterans organizations and the state of Iowa were presented by both the posting and the Legion Riders, who stood as a backdrop to the ceremony. An invocation was given by the Rev. Eldon Pals followed by a rendition of the National Anthem by Elizabeth Pearson. The featured speaker, retired Brigadier General Fred Chabot, of Newton, then spoke to those who had gathered about his
thoughts on Memorial Day. “This is indeed an honor and a privilege to be asked to deliver the Memorial Day address on such a beautiful day here at Newton Union Cemetery,” Chabot said. “We are primarily gathered here to honor those who gave their life, the supreme sacrifice while serving our country and our state.” Chabot said it is also a time to think of those who came home from conflicts or their time in the military. Those who lived civilian lives and died having served and lived to enjoy their country years after. MEMORIAL | 3A
Giggles, screams and splashes are back once again as Maytag Pool opened for the season on Saturday. After weathering the storm, the pool filled up as kids and adults welcomed the beginning of summer. Featuring zero entry access, water fountains, two water slides, a diving well and six 25 meter lanes, Maytag Pool is a fun summertime family attraction located among the Maytag Bowl, disc golf course and playground in Maytag Park. “One thing we have new this year is Toddler Swim,” Newton Director of Public Works Keith Laube said. “That is for
parents or guardians and children age 5 and under.” The new swim time will be at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Started at the request community members with little ones, the time is available for the toddlers to play in the shallow area, begin to learn how to swim and enjoy the pool on their own. Toddler Swim is $2 for adults and four and five year olds and free for kids three and under. Pool passes are also accepted. It will take a two week break from June 19 through June 30 for annual swim lessons. The pool is also equipped with a new POOL | 3A

Deer crashes ‘They did their job’ Colfax Veterans through insurance Memorial Dedication honors those who served agency building By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News
New clients are always welcome at Clemon-Maki Insurance but they usually like them to come during business hours and use the front door. The agency, 220 First Ave. W., got a surprise guest as a deer crashed through a side window and made its way to the front foyer where it was found early Saturday morning. “This is the first break
in that has happened,” owner Jeff Maki said. “I got a call of an attempted robbery, then shortly after they told me about the deer.” The deer entered from the west side of the building through a picture window and into an office before it moved into the front foyer area where it was found. Maki said it was lucky the foyer area exists or it would have had access to the entire office. Once DEER | 3A

COLFAX — A large crowd gathered on a rainy Saturday to dedicate the new Colfax Veterans Memorial. The memorial, which features 270 names of veterans from the Colfax area who served in the United States military, sits prominently in Mineral Springs Park on the corner of Walnut Street and Front Street and serves as a beautiful reminder of the sacrifices made for America. “I absolutely admire every one of you for coming out today to pay homage to a great memorial,” memorial organizer Doug Bishop said.
