NHDC set to acquire former Newton Country Club By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News To help foster residential growth, the Newton City Council approved enabling the Newton Housing Development Corporation to take ownership of the former Newton Country Club building.
The building at 601 W. 12th St. S., was donated to the city in April to be removed for the future Cardinal Ridge townhome development. “The 1.63 acre property that contains the clubhouse building is proposed to be donated from the current owner, XCO II, LLC, managed
by Walt Smith, of Newton, to the Newton Housing Development Corporation,” city administrator Matt Muckler said. “As it finalizes an agreement on the terms of the donation with Smith, the NHDC also seeks to enter into an agreement with the city regarding the demolition of the
structure and maintenance of the property.” The agreement has the city responsible for clearing the building, which would be done as a fire training exercise for the Newton Fire Department, removing the paving, swimming pool and foundations, disconnecting utilities

Jerry E. Fults, 36, was charged with six counts of third-degree sexual assault on a 12-year-old girl. District Court Judge Richard Clogg said the court considered the heinous nature of the
offenses and the fact that the defendant was a father figure in the home to Fults recomm e n d that Fults serve his sentences consecutively. Clogg ordered Fults to complete sex abuse counseling treatment, to register on the sex offenders registry and FULTS | 3A
New trial date set in vehicular homicide case Justin Jagler/Daily News Dave Briden of FRK Architects and Engineers addresses the NCSD Board at Monday’s meeting. FRK is working with the school district on the new Berg Middle School, and Monday night the board approved awarding the construction project to Hansen Company, Inc. for a bid of $27.25 million.
New softball field, high school parking lot projects also take steps forward By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News Monday was a busy night for the Newton Community School District Board of Education. A bid of $27.25 million for construction of the new Berg Middle School was awarded to Hansen Company, Inc. with a unanimous vote from the board. The cost of the new building, which was designed by FRK Architects and Engineers, is coming in considerably less than the school district originally ex-
pected. When the school board approved the construction documents in April, FRK was anticipating the total cost for the project to be about $38 million. Hansen Company, Inc.’s bid beat out two other bids for the project. Rochon Corp. of Iowa bid $28.34 million, and Stahl Construction Co. bid $27.65 million. Superintendent Bob Callaghan reminded the board that a little over a month ago it passed a 2018 tax rate that is two cents lower than the current rate. He
congratulated the board for being, he said, good stewards of the taxpayer dollar. Through three separate bonds, the district secured nearly $27 million for the new Berg complex. “I know it’s a lot of money,” Callaghan said. “But when you look at the big picture — the board has done a phenomenal job of trying to balance all of the needs within our community and our school district.” NCSD | 3A
By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News The trial date for a Newton man facing charges for vehicular homicide has been rescheduled for September after a pre-trial conference took place in Jasper County District Court Monday morning. Alex M. Spangenburg, 23, was arrested in connection to a fatal motorcycle crash on Oct. 22, 2016 in Newton. Jasper County Attorney Mike Jacobsen said he and Spangenburg’s attorney Jill Eimermann met briefly Monday to inform the judge that both sides would not be ready for trial July 19. Jacobsen said the trial was continued to Sept. 27 with a pre-trial confer-
ence set for Aug. 21. Sp an genburg turned himself in Feb. 20, following a warrant Spangenburg for his arrest. In the October incident, at approximately 2:15 a.m., the Newton Police Department was called to a motorcycle wreck near the intersection of West Fourth Street South and South 15th Avenue West near Maytag Park. Police released in February that speed and alcohol consumption are believed to be factors in the crash. SPANGENBURG | 3A
8-year-old runs to fire department, saves home from fire Community works to assist family By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News A local family is working to salvage their belongings after a fire started inside their home’s kitchen Friday afternoon. Steve and Misty Daniels and their two sons Quintin, 8, and Colton, 5, were not at their home
at 309 S. Eighth Ave. W. when an electric stove ignited a fire in the family’s kitchen around 3:30 p.m. Quintin had just been released from school at Woodrow Wilson when he arrived home just in time to witness smoke and flames. There were no neighbors at home at the time, so Quintin ran to the fire department to get help, according to the family. Quintin’s father Steve said he was relieved when he found out no one had been hurt, and he was proud of his son for doing the right
thing. “He ran all the way there and probably saved the house by doing that,” Steve said. “He definitely saved our dog who was trapped upstairs and the firemen got him out.” Newton Fire Marshal Mike Knoll said the fire was contained to the kitchen but smoke did spread through the whole home. Knoll said the total amount in damage was estimated at $20,000. The family said there were several valuables lost in the fire as well as FIRE | 3A
