Fidget spinners:

Kids love them, teachers not so much By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News

Severe storm causes power outages, tree damage By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Pelting rain and fierce winds blew through Jasper County Wednesday evening as a thunderstorm system made its way across Iowa. From downed power lines to road signs breaking loose and striking vehicles, the power of the storm was felt throughout the county. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Jasper County shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday along with a tornado watch until 7 p.m., alerting citizens to the line of storms coming toward Newton and the surrounding towns. While it did not last long, its damage was felt for hours afterward as more than 2,100 people lost power and even more started cleaning up fallen limbs and debris. Following the storm, Alliant Energy reported 15 outages and 1,679 customers without power in Jasper County. In Newton, a power line was struck by a falling tree limb at the intersection of North 15th Avenue West and West Fourth Street North, causing an outage for those in the northwest quadrant of the Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News city.

A crew looks at the work ahead of them after a tree limb struck a power pole causing the lines to go down and power to go out on the northwest side of Newton.

Justin Jagler/Daily News Fidget spinners have become wildly popular with children this spring. The toys are branded to help kids with attention issues, but many teachers say they’re mostly a distraction in the classroom.

Kids to Parks Day scavenger hunt Saturday By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A new event for the Newton parks system, Kids to Park Day, celebrates the relationship between kids and parks and works to get more kids out into the parks to discover what fun they hold. Kids and their families and friends are invited to participate this year by going on a scavenger hunt throughout the parks on Saturday. Participants are asked to snap a selfie with at least six of the 12 landmarks in Newton parks designated on the scavenger hunt list. The photo should be shared on social media, either Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, and tagged Get to Know. If all six photos are tagged, those participating will be entered into a drawing to win four 2017 Maytag Pool passes.

The scavenger hunt list includes: • Lincoln School sign at Lincoln Park • Zipline at Aurora Heights Park • Mural at Woodland Park • Deer statue at Sunset Park • Crawling tube at Callison Park • Swing set at Denniston Knolls Park • Butterfly sculpture at Newton Arboretum • Mower at Westwood Golf Course located south of parking lot, by the flagpole • 30 Acre Park sign • Rabbit statue at Maytag Park • Monkey bars at Hillcrest Park • Gazebo at Searsland Park The idea was first conceived by the Newton Parks Board during its last regular meeting. The board thought a scavenger hunt would be KIDS | 3A

Fidget spinners, which are toys branded to help kids with autism and attention disorders, are taking the nation by storm this spring. Questions remain unanswered about the toy’s effectiveness in helping kids to concentrate, but one thing is for sure — kids love them. Stores are having trouble keeping them in stock, and a recent gander at Amazon’s best-selling toys revealed the spinners own the top 15 spots. Fidget spinners have invaded Newton, too. They seem especially popular among the middle school crowd. There are no formal school policies in Newton for the spinners yet, but some teachers are enforcing rules in the classroom. The toys are made of plastic and metal. They spin and softly but audibly hum in a person’s hand. Although they are intended to help certain kids focus, the spinners have become a distraction, according to some teachers. Berg Middle School teacher Nicole Lampe said she’s seeing a ton of them. She is aware of the supposed benefits to kids with attention disorders, but she sees the spinners helping students very little. “I’ve had them fly across my room like a boomerang, students rolling them on their noses and foreheads, buzzing them in other students’ ears,” Lampe said.
