United Way fundraiser gets adults in on post-Easter fun

First ‘Thunder Nite’ of season leaves Newton ‘Thunderstruck’

By Anthony Victor Reyes Newton Daily News Although the unique motorcycles typically headline Thunder Nites in town square, one boy from Newton stole the show of the city’s first bike night of the season as he joined the electric AC/DC cover band, Rolling Thunder on stage Friday night.

“It was awesome,” Mason Nienenga’s caretaker, Kendall Morgan said.

“He really likes music, I know that. He likes to dance.”

Moran leaving NCSD for position in Urbandale

By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News WEST Academy Principal Mike Moran is turning the page and entering a new chapter in his professional life. After this school year wraps up, Moran will head to Metro West Learning Academy in Urbandale.

Moran, who came to the Newton Community School District in 2004 as an English teacher and head boy’s basketball coach at the high school, has been principal at WEST for the last year and a half. During his time at Newton’s alternative school, Moran developed partnerships between WEST and local businesses. He hopes to bring that same philosophy to Urbandale.

The administrator said he has been thrilled about how things have gone at WEST, and he loved his time in Newton. When he arrives MORAN | 3A

“It was cool seeing him on stage,” Morgan said. “He likes a lot of different types of music. He watches a lot of movies, but rock seems to kind of get him going.

We listen to a lot of AC/ DC at home ... My favorite is probably ‘Highway to Hell’.”

McDonald’s Makeover First Avenue location will be closed for extensive renovation starting June 12

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Grab an extra Big Mac and a few more chicken McNuggets because the First Avenue McDonald’s location will be closed for service for an exciting reason. The restaurant, 726 First Ave. E., is getting a makeover by way of a complete demolition, reconstruction and modern update of the building starting June 12.

“Out last day open will be June 11,” McDonald’s

Office Manager Toby Johnson said. “We will take a couple of days for utilities to be shut down and everything to be taken out of the building, then start demolition on June 14.”

The remodel is a long time coming for the established fast food restaurant.

Johnson said plans for a new building have been in the works for more than two years but have been delayed for various reasons.

For many kids, the most anticipated and fun part of Easter is the Easter egg hunts.

From the challenge of locating the hidden, colorful orbs to revealing the glorious prizes hidden within, many people loathed the day they were too old to partake in the annual egg search.

Luckily for several Jasper County adults, they were able to return to their childhoods and relive the spontaneous diving, grass stains and giggles that accompany the egg hunts thanks to United Way of Jasper County’s new, one-of-a-kind fundraiser Saturday night.

“We all remember Easter egg hunts when we were little. Just that anticipation of winning something and being a nice evening at the golf course, makes it a lot of fun,” participant Ann Isgrig said. “I like to support the (United Way) programs. It is a very creative (fundraiser).”

Today’s Highlights in History: On May 15, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a measure creating the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, whose members came to be known as WACs. That’s Odd Stolen trailer with $5,000 worth of snacks found in Arkansas JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Police in Arkansas have arrested two people for stealing a 16-foot trailer that contained thousands of dollars’ worth of Little Debbie snack cakes.

Police say the trailer was discovered missing early Wednesday from outside a storage unit in Jonesboro, about 115 miles northeast of Little Rock. According to a police report, the trailer belonged to a Little Debbie salesman and contained $5,000 worth of snacks.

“I like the motorcycles,” she said. “I like riding with my dad.

We just went on one. My dad goes really fast.”

According to Thunder Nites executive director, Lance Hawley, these events aim to promote Newton while combining several cultures and communities together in the name of rockand-roll.

“We figured this is a good way to recognize Newton and have Newton grow,” he said.

“There is a lot of negative atmosphere around bike groups. I personally would like everyone

have an active fun event instead of just writing a check. We still appreciate that. We still want that.

But this is something different.”

At the event, patrons ran, tripped and dived in the search for mini, golden treasure boxes scattered throughout a section of the golf course. Similarly to the kids’ Easter egg hunts, the participants located all the boxes in about five minutes, and collected their winnings, which totaled more than $4,200 in prizes.

“I got eight (treasure boxes),” Ann’s daughter-

in-law, Stephannie said. “I would do it again. It was over so fast.”

Although the attendees walked away with many fabulous goodies, including cash, tickets, free golf, a television, a grill and a gift card for a tattoo, they said they were glad they were able to enjoy the nice, spring weather, support the nonprofit and the local community all while having an unforgettable, fun evening.

“We just moved here a year ago,” Kern’s wife, Terran said.

“We love all the vendors and there are so many bikes here.

We used to go to the one on Second Avenue, but there wasn’t vendors and a lot of excitement like there is here.”

Friday night, many of the patrons also treated themselves to

hamburgers, sandwiches, burritos and beer offered by local vendors and town square businesses.

“I like snow cones. I like blue,” 6-year-old Leland Shaber.

“I also like cotton candy. It is so good. I also like (Jimmy John’s) roast beef sandwiches.”

There will be five Thunder Nites held in Newton this summer. According to the executive director of the events, the bike nights will continue to bring many talented musicians into town to share their passion for music.

“We have a great lineup this year,” Hawley said. “We started off with a bang with Rolling Thunder ... We try and stay with the rock-and-roll theme. We will have After Shock, (Richard

Moran is excited for the future of WEST, which is on a new trajectory, he said.

“It will be located a little different on the lot, the parking lot, landscaping, everything will be redone, improved.

Everything will be updated, the lobby will be a new, updated version, different colors, different style, very modern. It won’t even look like it is the same from what the people are used to.”

On the lot, there will not be parking on the drive-thru side of the

“The teachers are fantastic here and so are the students. I will miss that,” he said. “I have an absolutely wonderful group of people that I work with every day.”

Moran thanked the Newton school district. He said the school board has been very sup-

Lowe said due to the large turnout and the success of the overall treasure hunt, the organization plans to host this fundraiser again next year. She said they hope to expand the treasure hunt and offer larger prizes in the future.

“When you get to be an adult, you never get to do anything like (an Easter egg hunt),” participant Mary Appleby said.

The bike night festivities will host live music on the courthouse lawn the second Friday of the month throughout the summer. The last Thunder Nites event of the season is scheduled for Sept. 8.

Good morning?

I

’m going to become a morning person. Maybe.

It’s truly curious to me whether I can make this drastic change at this point in my life. I’ve been a night owl since my teenage years when given any opportunity I would stay up late and sleep all day.

But I signed up for a class at the YMCA — at 5:15 a.m. And it’s not really a class, but Boot Camp with Chad, which is essentially 45 minutes of intense workouts that make you wish you were dead. OK, it’s not that bad.

But I’ve spent the last week swearing when I have to climb stairs.

I’ve always thought people who rise and shine and then exercise are completely bonkers. I typically only check into the Y during the early hours if I’m unable to sleep. However, as it turns out it’s kind of awesome.

So I’ve managed to pull myself out of bed three days last week for camp — but I did not manage to change my bedtime. I also have the super helpful Fitbit that tells me how little sleep I’m actually getting. I’m kind of exhausted

(and everything hurts).

The great thing, however, about getting your workout done early is the extra time before work. There is just so much that can be done! I can watch the news, start a load of laundry, go through emails, unload the dishwasher. Coffee — I can totally drink a pot of coffee. Plus I get to prepare and eat breakfast. It’s been a couple of decades since I’ve not eaten breakfast on the go or in the office.

When I start fading during the afternoon, I vow to go to bed early — 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. at the latest. Without fail I’m unable to meet my goal and extend my bedtime sometimes well past 11. There is just so much that can be done! Watch the news, fold laundry, get my lunch prepared, read, binge on

Netflix and text my bestie. Social media — I can totally let time slip away on Facebook and Twitter.

Clearly I’m in conflicting worlds.

I really think I have a desire to crawl into bed and get some solid z’s but when nightfall hits that option seems amazingly boring. Especially when I could be accomplishing things around the house or enjoying some entertainment.

I also have a strong desire to complete this five-week boot camp without meeting my demise. I believe this will require much more sleep — and encouragement. So if you see me around feel free to hold me accountable by asking me how boot camp is going. And maybe suggest I get some sleep.

Improved health bill

The House repealed Obamacare!

OK, they didn’t really — but they passed a bill that repeals some bad parts of it, like the individual mandate tax, medicine cabinet tax, flexible spending account tax and health savings account withdrawal tax. Good.

Now the Senate will create its own bill and ask the Congressional Budget Office if the House bill will save money.

But Obamacare was so bad, I fear these changes are just Band-Aids on a collapsing system. Instead, the Senate should pass my seven-point plan: 1. Repeal Obamacare, all of it.

With premiums soaring and insurers pulling out of Obamacare, let’s start from scratch with something better.

2. Repeal all regulations and tax breaks that encourage people to buy group insurance instead of paying for health care directly.

Insurance is sometimes needed, but insurance is a terrible, bureaucratic way to pay for things. If we pay our own bills, competition will explode and prices will drop.

3. Abolish Medicare.

This won’t happen, I know. We old people love Medicare; it makes so much health care seem free.

We are also more likely to vote, and math-challenged activists from groups like AARP convince old people that no cuts are needed.

But that’s a lie. Medicare and Social Security are unsustainable. They will bankrupt America. Then few of us will get help we desperately need.

Since politicians won’t touch these “entitlements,” we’ll have to keep them for those already in the system. But phase out everyone younger! Liberate people to shop around, so we can all benefit from price competition and new treatments.

4. Abolish Medicaid.

Why force poor people into one government-run bureaucracy? Ideally, private charity will take care of those who cannot pay for themselves. If you don’t believe that will happen, give the poor money or vouchers and let them decide which things to spend it on.

The poor have a wide range of preferences just like the rest of us. We give people food stamps — but we didn’t create a single food-provision bureaucracy. Medicaid’s one-size-fits-all rules help the poor less than they help bureaucrats and crony businesses connected to government.

5. Don’t punish private spending.

If an employer buys your health care, it’s tax-free, but the feds take a huge cut. End that, so that individuals buy their own insurance. Pushing them into group plans is not fair. It also distorts the economy by locking people to their jobs. Moving toward individual Health Savings Accounts would be a step in the right direction.

Better still, end rules that restrict private care. Instead of celebrating those who try to provide health services, government wraps them in red tape. Set them free to do good works.

6. End government subsidies for hospitals.

Hospital prices skyrocketed once the government started subsidizing them and dictating how they must operate.

No matter how much business hospital owners and managers lose because of unhappy (or dead) customers, they’ll remain stagnant as long as they can keep sucking up government money and as long as government rules make their decisions for them.

7. End government subsidies for scientific research.

People think we need government for “basic research,” but they’re wrong. The profit motive isn’t perfect, but when the market funds research, you get more innovation — like faster mapping of the human genome.

Let’s work together We passed our two-year anniversary for Hometown Pride in Jasper County on April 9. Where does the time go! We have accomplished some great things, and there is much more to come in our final three years. In our first two years, the nine Hometown Pride communities in Jasper County obtained $718,000 in grant funds for projects that we determined are priorities. That’s a pretty good return on investment for the Hometown Pride program.

When we started in 2015 one of my first tasks was to find the partners in Jasper County that would help us make Hometown Pride a success. It was important that Hometown Pride be about cooperating, coordinating, and moving projects forward. I figured our best assets would be the folks who have been here for years, committed to making Jasper County a better place.

Certainly the nine municipal governments who elected to participate in Hometown Pride would be advocates, but we needed to find those private individuals with a passion to make their communities better places.

The assistance we have received from organizations in Jasper County has exceeded my wildest expectations. It has been one of the most enjoyable parts of getting Hometown Pride established. Almost without exception people have been welcoming and interested in working together to accomplish things. There is an undercurrent throughout the county that we have so much potential — great people, great schools, and we’re 25 minutes from a 600,000 population major metropolitan area.

Working together is how we reach that potential.

No better example of how working together has been great-

Hometown Pride Community Coach Jeff Davidson er than the sum of its parts than the Jasper County Conservation Department. Keri Van Zante and her team have been great to work with and provided an incredible amount of assistance to Hometown Pride. Five of us put our heads together — Hometown Pride, County Conservation, the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the City of Prairie City — and we came up with a $510,000 Federal Lands access grant which will help move along the construction of the recreational rail trail between Prairie City and Monroe.

A great project that will come together sooner because we are all working together.

Historic preservation groups in Lynnville and Colfax have been great to work with, and certainly Ken Barthelman at the Jasper County Historical Museum. Lots of parks committees are working with our Hometown Pride groups — Sully, Monroe, Kellogg, Mingo, Colfax and Newton for sure. The Newton and Lynnville Chambers of Commerce have been great partners with Hometown Pride; and we’re looking at forming a Chamber of Commerce subcommittee at Baxter Hometown Pride. Economic development groups in Baxter, Newton, Sully and Prairie City have all participated in Hometown Pride projects, and JEDCO has been one of our biggest champions.

In Prairie City we are using Hometown Pride to strengthen the relationship between Prairie City and the National Wildlife Refuge — a relationship that

will benefit both groups. The Friends of the Chichaqua Valley Trail are great collaborators with our Baxter and Mingo Hometown Pride committees, and they will be helping us get a Friends group formed for the Monroe-Prairie City trail. The superintendents of the Baxter, Lynnville-Sully and Newton Community School Districts serve on our Hometown Pride committees, and we have had good cooperation from PCM and Colfax-Mingo schools when we have asked for it. Newton Hometown Pride is helping to coordinate an exciting project in Newton with the green space between DMACC and the former Maytag campus — stay tuned!

We have one important collaboration yet to go in Jasper County — housing. With leadership from Chaz Allen and the Jasper County Economic Development Corporation, we recently completed a housing market study for Jasper County. Each of the nine Hometown Pride communities were highlighted. The main conclusion: we need more housing in Jasper County.

We need housing for people who work at our growing businesses in Jasper County, and for people working in the Des Moines metro. We need more quality rental housing. We need more starter homes for families.

We need senior housing.

Not everyone who works in Des Moines wants to live in the big city. Many of them want to live in: (insert the name of your favorite town in Jasper County).

We need to make sure our towns in Jasper County are reaching their potential as great places — join us at Hometown Pride if you want to be part of it. It’s a great collaboration!

Obituaries Leonard W. Hendrickson

Leonard Warren Hendrickson was born the son of Jonas and Rozelia Marie (Adams) Hendrickson Oct. 5, 1925, in Grinnell. He was raised and educated in Newburg.

Leonard was united in marriage to Ida M. Wilson Dec. 7, 1943, in Grinnell. A day later, Leonard began his service in the United State Navy as a Seaman First Class and served his

country during World War II. He was honorably discharged Jan. 17, 1946. The couple lived and farmed in the Newburg area for many years.

Leonard was a 70-year member of the Newburg American Legion, was a longtime member of the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church, was caretaker of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery for many years and served for 23 years as a reserve deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office.

Leonard’s family always came first in his life. He was a hard-worker who loved farming the land. His grandchildren recalled the times he taught them how to drive, going for rides with him in the combine and how he teased them and loved

them unconditionally.

Leonard’s enjoyments were going to dances with Ida, watching old western movies, reading Louis L’Amour books and playing cards.

Leonard is survived by his son, Ron (Lynda) Hendrickson of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Jeff Hendrickson and Jackie Kriegel, both of Grinnell, Amy McDonough of Boone and Sue Arrowood of Altoona; five great-grandchildren, Jaden McDonough, Katelyn Kriegel, Alex McDonough and Paige and Parker Arrowood; and a brother, Gordon Hendrickson of Colfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ida Hendrickson in 2009; and son, John Hendrickson in 2005.

Larry served his country with the U.S. Army in Korea during the Vietnam Conflict.

On May 12, 1970, Larry was united in marriage with Barbara J. Van Sant in Newton.

To this union two children were born, Steve and Suzy. Larry was a local truck driver for the Heartland Co-Op. He was a loving husband, father, papa, son and brother. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. He enjoyed NASCAR, hunting and hot air ballooning and was a member of the Newton American Legion Post #111.

by his wife Barbara; his son, Steve (Amanda) Van Wyngarden of Newton; his daughter, Suzy (Joel) Foley of Lewiston, Idaho; his six grandsons; his mother, Minnie Van Wyngarden of Pella; brothers, Walt (Isla) Van Wyngarden of Caledonia, Mich., Daryl Van Wyngarden of New Sharon and Ron (LeAnn) Van Wyngarden of Johnston; a sister, Sherry (Doug) Pfadenhauer of Pella; his nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and his many good neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry; two sisters-inlaw, Cheri and Sheryl;

and a nephew, Brett.

A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 17, at the Newton Church of the Way, with a visitation 9:30 a.m. until service time, at the church.

The Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements.

Burial will be in the Veteran’s section at Newton Union Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Larry’s family or a charity of your choosing.

Thelma L. ( Jansen) Vanderpol, 74, of Sully, passed away Thursday evening, May 11, 2017 at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella.

Thelma, a homemaker and farm wife to Glenn Vanderpol, is survived by her husband, Glenn; three children: Michael Vanderpol of Sully,

Carrie Vanderpol and Randy Vander Weerdt of Searsboro, Matthew Vanderpol and wife, Trisha of Clive; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her mother, Cora (Henry G.) Jansen of Grinnell; her brother, Donald Jansen and wife, Karen of Grinnell and her sister, Jan and husband, Ryk De Goey of Sully.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May

16 at 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church in Sully. Interment will follow in the Sully Cemetery at Sully.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Sully where the family will be present Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Police Blotter after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a person trespassing. Police saw a vehicle with the person accused of trespassing.

Sparks had a warrant for her arrest and was taken to the Jasper County Jail. The Jasper County Jail located nine Oxycodone hydrocholoride pills in a small zipper compartment in her wallet. Sparks said they didn’t belong to her but the clutch did belong to her.

Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office • Lisa E. Logan, 42, of Williamson, was charged with possession of paraphernalia, driving while barred, operating while under the influence and possession of controlled substance at 2:29 a.m. May 8 after a deputy stopped her for driving violations.

Logan didn’t have a valid license and had seven withdrawals on her file. Logan

was arrested. When the deputy searched her vehicle, they found a small plastic bag with white residue and another white crystal substance. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed .5 grams. Also inside the bag was a methamphetamine pipe. Logan told the deputy that it was hers and she said she purchased it for $30 in Colfax. Logan was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

Ex-friend cast out of social circle dreams of vengeance

DEAR ABBY: My friend has decided she can no longer tolerate my husband. She feels he doesn’t “respect” her. This is far from the truth, in my mind.

We have supported her emotionally and financially from time to time for many years. My husband does have a habit of making clunky jokes (anything for a laugh or to fill the void).

But a real friend should see beyond that to the loving, supportive person he is at his core, in his heart, and forgive.

We are now banned from her social group. I find this very harsh — cruel even. I guess my friendship doesn’t count, as I’m being thrown out with the perceived trash as well. I’m depressed and angry, and I want some kind of revenge and to hurt her back.

I was so happy with our little group.

Now it’s been taken away from me.

Advice? — TOSSED ASIDE IN NEW YORK DEAR TOSSED: Yes. Rather than seek revenge, tell the woman how hurt you feel after having befriended her all these years. Time is our most precious commodity. The more time you spend plotting retaliation, the more space this ungrateful woman is taking up in your head, and it’s not healthy — for you.

Once you have spoken to her and gotten this off your chest, go on with your life. Continue to see others in the group on an individual basis, if necessary. If they are real friends, I’m sure they’ll be glad to do that.

DEAR ABBY: I am a 34-year-old single mother (by choice) of a beautiful 3-year-old boy. Because of infertility problems, it took years for me to conceive. I love my son beyond measure and, when I’m not working, I’m usually shuttling him to extracurricular activities and making time after cooking and cleaning to play with him.

Because my world revolves around

being a mom, I have a hard time participating in adult conversations without talking about my son and how proud and happy I am to be his mom.

I realize this can be irritating to others, and it has become frustrating for me.

I’m educated, opinionated and wellread, but I seem to have lost the ability to relate to other adults and make friends away from my role as a mother.

Any advice would be helpful at this point. — PROUD TO BE A MOM DEAR PROUD: Considering the fact that your total focus is on your child, it’s not surprising he’s your main topic of conversation. However, because you want to expand your repertoire, broaden it by bringing up current events, which should give you plenty of fodder for conversation.

DEAR READERS: I am honored to again participate in National Women’s Health Week. Women are the primary caretakers in most societies — including our own — but in the process, we too often forget to care for ourselves by eating right, lowering our stress levels with regular exercise and scheduling regular medical checkups.

Young woman pulled from water below dam CEDAR FALLS — Firefighters and police officers have pulled a young woman from water below a Cedar River dam in Cedar Falls. Authorities say 18-year-old Chloe Adams, of Waterloo, slipped into the water beneath the Ice House dam around 5:30 p.m. Sunday as she walked along the river while watching a friend fish. A Cedar Falls police officer threw Adams a rescue disk on a rope line, which she grabbed so she could remain in place in a calm spot between two piers.

2 Man charged with embezzling from pet-boarder

MASON CITY — A Mason City man has been charged with embezzling more than $30,000 from a pet-boarding business. Johnathan Kofron-Willaman, 48, was arrested Thursday on ongoing criminal conduct and theft charges. Police say Kofron-Willaman worked at Mason City’s Bark Break Hotel, a pet boarding facility featuring private suites, a whirlpool tub and play areas that opened in 2014.

TITONKA — The remains of an Iowa sailor killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor are now buried next to his mother’s remains in Kossuth County.

William Kennedy, of Titonka, was buried on Friday. He was one of 429 sailors and Marines killed aboard the USS Oklahoma battleship. Kennedy’s remains were recently identified as part of a Defense Department effort that started in 2015. He had been buried in an area for the unidentified at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.

3 Few details released about death of 16-year-old girl

PERRY— Authorities have released few details about the death of a 16-year-old Iowa girl they are investigating.

Police in Perry say the girl was unresponsive when she was found Friday. Paramedics were sent to the home where the girl was at around 6:30 p.m. Friday. Police have not released the identity of the girl or the cause of her death. An autopsy is planned for this week. The address where the girl was found is the location of a home day care, but it’s not immediately clear if the girl lived there.

Man gets 15 years in shooting of 9-year-old boy WATERLOO — A Waterloo man has been imprisoned for his role in a December shooting that injured a 9-year-old boy. A judge sent 22-year-old Mar’yo Lindsey Jr. to prison Friday for 15 years. He’d been convicted in March of intimidation with a weapons, willful injury and related weapons charges. Young Anton Kincaid was sitting on a couch Dec. 15, watching television, when bullets ripped through a window and wall of the home.

Many of Branstad’s goals remain unfinished as he heads out DES MOINES (AP) — As Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad prepares to step down from office to become a U.S. diplomat, he’s highlighted what he sees as his administration’s successes in recent years.

They include a low unemployment rate, multi-billion dollar private-sector investments and a slate of workforce initiatives. The results are more mixed when considering four goals he promised when he returned to office in 2011.

Branstad, the longest serving governor in U.S. history in his 23rd year on the job, is expected to resign soon to become ambassador to China. A Senate vote to confirm his nomination could happen as early as this week.

Branstad wanted to achieve these objectives by 2016: 200,000 new jobs; a 15 percent reduction in the cost of government; a 25 percent increase in family incomes; and having the nation’s best schools.

Last year, Branstad aides said the governor met the job goal and the others needed more work. His administration still notes those goals but now emphasizes other successes, such as $13.5 billion in private capital investment, renewable energy advancements and job programs aimed at veterans and post-high school education.

stad’s spokesman, said the goals haven’t all been achieved but that Branstad, “would tell you that we have made substantial progress in all the areas.”

In assessing Branstad’s success since returning to government in 2011, Senate Democratic leader Rob Hogg, of Cedar Rapids, emphasized the most recent session, when the Republican governor worked with GOP majorities in both legislative chambers on a host of conservative bills.

Hogg notes Branstad signed measures reducing collective bargaining rights for public employees and prohibiting local governments from raising the minimum hourly wage. With those measures in mind, Hogg called Branstad’s efforts on family incomes “a miserable failure.”

“They have not pursued policies that have provided for broad economic growth,” Hogg said.

Jeff Kaufmann, chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa, applauded the governor’s accomplishments and said he expects Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to keep up the good work. Reynolds is widely expected to launch a gubernatorial run next year.

“I see no indication that there is not going to be continued progression to meet those goals and surpass those goals,” he said.

Here’s a look at the four goals: 200,000 NEW JOBS Asked recently about the objectives, the 70-year-old Branstad said, “We exceeded our goal of 200,000 new jobs.” Then he noted

the 3.1 percent unemployment rate, far less than the 5.7 percent rate when he returned to office in January 2011.

The U.S. Labor Department’s data on current employment statistics show Iowa added nearly 85,000 private sector jobs between January 2011 and January 2016, though the Iowa Policy Project has noted other data showcasing that it’s closer to 105,000. Branstad’s office points to statistics from Iowa Workforce Development, which highlighted more than 206,000 new jobs had been reached by December 2015. The figure doesn’t take into account net growth, or jobs lost in that time.

Hammes said the administration has always been up front about not including net jobs.

15 PERCENT REDUCTION IN COST OF GOVERNMENT Branstad’s administration cited data from the Iowa Department of Management to note about 2,300 fewer state employees today than in January 2011. But the figure doesn’t include employees at Iowa’s three public universities, staff overseeing that system under the Board of Regents, the courts system, the Iowa Legislature or community-based corrections.

Hammes said those areas of state government are not part of the executive branch.

Hammes wouldn’t specify what statistics would measure a 15 percent reduction. The cost of running state government has increased, from about $6 billion in the budget year that ended in 2012 to roughly $7.2 billion for the upcoming spending year.

25 PERCENT INCREASE IN FAMILY INCOME Branstad’s office measures family income as per capita personal income tracked by the U.S. Department of Commerce and its Bureau of Economic Analysis. Hammes said Iowa’s personal income had a nearly 20 percent growth in the five-year span. The latest data indicates that percentage is now about 24 percent.

Those numbers include wages and salaries,

income off investments and income from payments like unemployment benefits and Social Security.

Hammes added when compared to the rest of the country, “we are doing quite well.”

The same bureau in March released annual personal income data by state that showed Iowa ranked 42nd, with 2.3 percent growth in 2016 over 2015.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in 2015 was about $53,000.

It was a little more than $50,000 in 2011.

BEST SCHOOLS IN THE NATION The goal to make Iowa’s schools the best in the nation is difficult to track since additional parameters weren’t set.

The state spends roughly $3 billion on K-12 education, and Branstad’s office pointed to gradual funding increases over the years. They also noted an investment in teacher leadership training.

That hasn’t been enough to quell complaints that spending hasn’t kept up with inflation, leading educators to say it’s led to layoffs and larger classroom sizes. In 2017, Iowa’s three public universities collectively cut about $30 million mid-year amid budget constraints.

Officials for the universities have indicated it will lead to increases in student tuition.

Lynnville-Sully’s Jansen qualifies for district golf

By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully junior Holden Jansen shot a 93 at Friday’s Class 1A sectional golf tournament at Prairie Knolls Country Club golf course.

Jansen and Southeast Warren’s Brandon Dittmer, who shot a 91, earned spots at the 1A district golf meet as the top two individuals not on the three qualifying teams for sectionals. Dittmer and Jansen, who had rounds of 47 and 46, finished 12th and 13th, respectively, overall.

The sectional champion was Jansen Milan DeJong of North Mahaska with a 77 and the runner-up was North Mahaska’s Blake Fisher. Lucas Hemphill of Wayne shot an 80 to finish third and North Mahaska’s Dylan Comstock was fourth at 82.

North Mahaska won the sectional team title with a 324 four-man total. Moravia was second with a 356. Wayne also qualified as a team with a 359 since host North Mahaska won the tournament.

Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks were fourth with a team total of 396. Lynnville-Sully was fifth at 427 and Southeast Warren took sixth with a 463.

Three Tigerhawks carded 97s for the sectional tournament. Sophomore Skyler Aiken had the best nine-hole round for Colfax-Mingo, shooting a 47 on the front nine and he had a 50 on the back nine. Sophomore Ahren Teed (49-48) and freshman Brady Berkley (48-49) also finished with 97s.

Game over. Newton High’s Cardinals upended visiting Class 2A fourth-ranked Adel-DeSoto-Minburn 1-0 on Friday.

It took 92-plus minutes to settle the 2A clash but the Cardinals handed the Tigers (10-1) their first loss of the season. It came on the day the Cardinals dropped from No. 10 to No. 15 in the 2A rankings released earlier in the afternoon.

“She even pointed for me to take the kick. I said here we go this one’s in.”

The Cardinal senior duo executed the play to perfection.

“Taylor has that perfect corner kick so I just put my body there and luckily I got my head on it to put the ball in the back of the net,” Rausch said. “After the first overtime, I told the team we’re scoring in the first couple of minutes right here.”

True to her word, Rausch scored her 11th goal of the season to give Newton the win with 7:31 left in the second overtime period.

The two teams played in a goalie dual as Newton senior Ashlee Freese and ADM freshman Delaney Bertman were keeping each team’s offense at bay.

“Ashlee came up with some big saves and our defense played lights out,” Newton head coach Abby Lamont said. “The goal tonight couldn’t have been placed more perfectly off Taylor’s foot to Ryanne’s head. We practice for opportunities like this and tonight was our night.”

Area prep track teams sending 56 to state track meet

By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News Every area track team will be represented at the 2017 Iowa High School Track and Field Championships. The at-large qualifiers list was released Friday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association.

There are 56 athletes qualified from Newton, Lynn-

ville-Sully, Colfax-Mingo, Prairie City-Monroe and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter track teams. There are girls and boys from each team scheduled to compete in the all-class, three-day state track meet at Drake University’s stadium in Des Moines.

Competition begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at Drake Stadium. On Thursday and Friday, Class 4A and 1A events begin at 9 a.m.

The afternoon session on both days, which features 2A and 3A events, begins at 2 p.m.

Saturday is for running event finals for all classes starting at 9 a.m. All field events will be completed on Thursday and Friday.

Newton High’s girls qualified in the 4A shuttle hurdle relay and in the discus and shot put events. The Cardinal boys will compete in the 4A 4x100-meter relay and the

1,600 distance medley relay.

Junior Haley Revell, who qualified for the state meet in the 3A shot put a year ago, returns to the shot put ring in 4A competition. She had the 17thbest throw in the state qualifying meets Thursday at 37 feet.

COLFAX — Placing three golfers in the top four, the Prairie City-Monroe girls’ golf team cruised to the team title at the Colfax-Mingo Girls Invitational on Friday evening at the Par 36 Colfax Country Club.

Senior Bre Maher won medalist honors, junior Madeline Mitchell was the runner-up and junior Sabrina Reed finished fourth as the Mustangs shot a 204 and won by 20 strokes.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter put its top three golfers in the top seven. The Raiders, led by junior Brynne Pritchard, shot a 224 in second.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont shot a 237 in third and host Colfax-Mingo was fourth with a 240.

“It was a great way to end our regular season,” PCM coach Val Edwards said.

Iowa WR Smith leaves football program IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa’s depleted receiving corps lost another player Friday, when the Hawkeyes announced that Jerminic Smith has left the program.

Smith caught 23 passes for 314 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 2016 for Iowa.

But Smith was suspended for spring workouts because of academics.

Coach Kirk Ferentz says “we have mutually agreed that at this point it is in everyone’s best interest that Jerminic starts a new chapter in his collegiate career.”

Running back Akrum Wadley led all returning players with 36 catches, though senior star Matt VandeBerg is expected back after catching 19 passes in just four games.

Judge won’t delay trial in Iowa field hockey coach’s firing DES MOINES (AP) — A judge is declining the University of Iowa’s request to delay the upcoming trial in a lawsuit filed by former women’s field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum.

Judge Eliza Ovrom told attorneys Friday that Griesbaum’s case will keep its June 5 trial date.

Griesbaum alleges she suffered discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation in Athletic Director Gary Barta’s decision to fire her without cause in 2014. Jurors last week awarded her partner, Iowa’s former associate athletic director Jane Meyer, $1.43 million in damages for discrimination, retaliation and unequal pay.

A university lawyer sought the delay in Griesbaum’s case Tuesday, saying Iowa “will not be able to present an adequate defense” in the 10-day period originally envisioned for trial.

Barta fired Griesbaum after receiving complaints about her treatment of some players, although an investigation found no policy violations.

The Little Dutch posted a 7-2 win over the visiting Cardinals for their third win in a row. The Cardinals fell to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in conference action while the Little Dutch improved to 3-3 in LHC play and 5-10 overall.

“We we’re missing about half of our varsity team and we had to use a few junior varsity players,” Newton head coach Zach Jensen said. “We got outworked and didn’t stay marked up,

which basically was how we gave up our goals.”

Newton’s two goals were unassisted. Junior Zach Combs nailed a free kick for a goal and senior Justin Fischer converted a penalty kick opportunity. Newton had six shots on goal, six corner kick opportunities and 13 free kicks.

Jensen said the Cardinals had many chances to score but did not capitalize on them. He said Newton gifted most of Pella’s goals.

Ethan Poulter and Soren Stelter each scored three goals for the Little Dutch.

Baily Hamilton had the other goal.

Newton senior goalkeeper Reagan Maple had three saves.

“We need to regroup for the last week of the regular

season and play our last two games as tune-up games before substate play,” Jensen said. “We need to have a strong showing from the boys this week because I have very high expectations from them.”

The Cardinals wrap up Little Hawkeye Conference play in a 7 p.m. game on Thursday at Pella Christian. They host Nevada for a 7 p.m. game on Friday at H. A. Lynn Stadium to conclude the regular season.

Newton hosts a Class 2A Substate 2 doubleheader on May 22. Collins-Maxwell/Baxter plays South Tama at 5 p.m. and Newton plays CAL at 7 p.m. at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Senior Ryan Hofer and sophomore Gage Vander Leest are in the 110 high hurdle field. Hofer’s time of 15.77 seconds is 16th among qualifiers and Vander Leest stands in 17th at 15.94.

The two will combine with Carson Dunsbergen and senior Caden Dunsbergen in the shuttle hurdle relay race. Their time was 1:01.56, which was eighth-fastest among qualifiers.

Vander Linden, McCoy, junior Sage Zylstra and sophomore Nate Stock posted the fourth-best time (1:36.37) in the sprint medley relay to qualify. The Hawks’ 4x400 relay team of Vander Leest, McCoy, Carson Dunsbergen and Vander Linden have the thirdbest time (3:30.54) going into the state meet.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls are qualified in five events. Freshman Abby Gruver qualified in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.36, which ranks ninth among 1A qualifiers. Freshman Mallory Loftus will compete in the high jump as her clearance of 4-10 was 16th among qualifiers.

Senior Brenna Lanser, junior Camryn Russell combined with Loftus and Gruver to qualify for the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:10.78, which was eighth fastest. The foursome of Lanser, senior Makenzy Rozendaal, junior Lydia Akergren and Russell qualified in the 4x100 (52.63) and the 4x200 (1:50.78).

Every relay qualified has a couple of alternate runners, who are eligible to compete if necessary.

Truex claims Go Bowling 400 at Kansas KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. finally ended his string of rotten luck at Kansas Speedway.

Danica Patrick was left to rue more bad luck of her own.

Truex pulled away from Ryan Blaney and Kevin Harvick on a late restart Saturday night, winning the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series race that he seemed to dominate every year without reaching victory lane.

“They’re all so special, honestly. These races are so hard to win,” said Truex, who had a fluke tire change problem rob him of the win after leading 172 laps last year. “Any of those restarts I could have gotten beat on. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Brad Keselowski made a pass on the final lap to take second, followed by Harvick and Blaney. Kyle Busch rounded out the top five after winning the Truck Series race Friday night.

“Toward the end we made some runs and made the most of it.”

The race was halted with

67 laps to go when a broken brake rotor turned Joey Logano’s car into Patrick, sending her hard into the fence in the first turn. Aric Almirola had nowhere to go and slammed into Logano, the force of the impact lifting his car into the

air.

Logano and Patrick were treated and released from the infield care center, while Almirola was airlifted to the University of Kansas Medical Center. He was conscious and alert.

“I hope Aric is OK. He’s definitely feeling the worst of everybody,” Patrick said. “NASCAR does everything it can to make it safe for everybody but these things happen. One of these times, these accidents aren’t going to be good for me.

They’re all big. I’ve been fortunate so far.”

When it comes to escaping accidents unharmed. But Patrick has had very little fortune on the track, crashing out of the last four races and failing to finish five times this season.

“Just out of nowhere. Everything was fine and then it took a hard one,” Logano said.

“I hate that I’m the part of it that started it. I don’t know what I could have done.”

The race tied a track record with 15 cautions, and the last of them for a spin involving

Jimmie Johnson bunched up the field with two laps to go.

Truex dove to the bottom and roared from the rest of the field, ensuring there would be no more misfortune for him at Kansas.

It was Truex’s ninth career win and second this season.

He also won at Las Vegas.

“I felt like if I could get out front on those restarts, I was OK,” Truex said. “If I came out second or third, it took me a long time to get around guys.”

The only race at the end was for second place. Keselowski, Harvick and Blaney went three-wide with Keselowski on the high side, and he made the move stick. Harvick finished third while Blaney was shuffled back to fourth after leading 83 laps.

“Truex had a couple of really good restarts and I didn’t, and I don’t know if I could have held him off or what,” Blaney said. “But good showing. Go out there and lead laps and run with some really good cars. That’s where this team deserves to be.”

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Busch picked up right where he left off in the Truck Series at Kansas Speedway.

Only three years had passed.

Busch hopped into the No. 51 Toyota of his own Kyle Busch Motorsports and roared to the front early Friday night, winning the first two stages before taking advantage of leader Ben Rhodes’s engine trouble in the closing laps to take the checkered flag.

It was Busch’s fifth victory in his last 10 starts in the series going back to 2015, and came after a victory at Kansas in May 2014 — the last time he drove a truck at the venue.

“It was really fast out there,” said Busch, who will try to defend his Cup Series win at Kansas on Saturday night.

“We tried to pick and choose whether we wanted to be fast in a straight line or have better handling, and we chose more downforce and it worked out for us.”

Rhodes, who crashed jockeying for the lead on the final lap a year ago, opened a big lead on Busch during the final stage when the Cup Series regular ran into lapped traffic. But when a puff of white smoke came out of his truck with seven laps left, Rhodes had to pull down pit lane.

Still in search of his first win,

Rhodes slammed his steering wheel in frustration.

“We ran with the best tonight,” said Rhodes, who blamed a piece of debris that went through his radiator for the engine blowing up. “We did everything right but Ben Rhodes has a curse on his back of something because something always goes wrong.

“If I don’t make it in this game it won’t be from lack of effort. It’ll be from bad luck.”

Busch, who won the spring Cup race a year ago, cruised the final few laps to win once again at the track that once game him so much trouble. He stopped at the start-finish line and got the checkered flag tossed down to him, then paraded briefly along the front stretch.

Johnny Sauter avoided trouble all night to finish second and John Hunter Nemecheck was third, while Busch’s teammate, Christopher Bell, rallied from a badly timed caution to finish fourth. Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five for Brad Keselowski Racing.

The win was the 47th for Busch in the Truck Series, leaving him four back of the record set by Ron Hornaday, and one he thought belonged to Rhodes in the final laps.

Will Power dominates in IndyCar Grand Prix victory INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Will Power avoided the bad luck Saturday. He outran everybody else in the IndyCar Grand Prix.

The Australian completed a dominant first weekend in Indianapolis by easily pulling away from Scott Dixon for his first victory of the season and Team Penske’s third in a row.

The victory margin of 5.2830 seconds didn’t even seem that close, and Ryan Hunter-Reay was a distant third.

“I was just very conscious of the gap Dixon was closing and I kept thinking ‘He’s going to burn his tires off ’ and then he kept closing,” Power said. “Then, boom, suddenly they went and I knew we were good.”

Until this weekend, noth-

ing had come easily for Power this season.

A mechanical problem took him out of the season opener at St. Petersburg.

He seemed destined to win at Alabama until a flat tire forced him to pit and dropped him to 14th.

The following week, at Phoenix, Power also was in contention for the lead — until a caution flag came out while he was already on pit lane. He wound up second, more than nine seconds behind teammate Simon Pagenaud.

In Indy, Power was on a mission to change his misfortunes — and he did.

He posted the fastest lap in practice Friday then won the pole in a track record time.

On Saturday, he led 61 of 85

laps, surrendered the lead twice — both after pit stops — and never was passed on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course.

Power picked up his 30th career win in his 175th career start and moved past teammate Helio Castroneves and former Penske driver Rick Mears into No. 11 on the alltime victory list.

And this time, nothing got between Power and victory lane— not even a caution period “I think today we got the most out of the car,” Dixon said. “I think Honda was just too much as far as the red tires and the last five laps, we just couldn’t run down Will.”

Power’s teammates had the same problem.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves led the other 24 laps but faded following his final pit stop. He finished fifth, and it marked the second straight race the Penske drivers led every lap.

Pagenaud, the defending series champ, started seventh and wound up fourth.

Josef Newgarden spent most of the day in the top five — until being assessed drivethrough penalties for pitspeed violations on back-toback laps. He finished 11th.

Honda wound up taking five of the next seven spots after Power, starting with Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing and Hunter-Reay or Pagenaud finished the day with 10-point lead over Dixon in the standings.

But Power joined Pagenaud as the only two-time winners of the race. Pagenaud won the inaugural race in 2014 and again last season. Power won previously in 2015. Each of the last three grand prix winners started on the pole, and each drove for Roger Penske.

“It was good to get a win,” Power said. “It was good for everyone.”

Drivers and teams will take Sunday off as track officials convert the speedway from a road course into an oval course.

Practice for the May 28 Indianapolis 500 opens Monday, with qualifying set for next weekend. Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso is expected to be on the track all of next week.

Moustakas has HR, four RBIs, Royals finish sweep of Orioles KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Moustakas came through with a big homer and thought of his late mother, just like he does every time he goes deep.

Moustakas homered and drove in four runs to help the Kansas City Royals rally from five runs down to beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-8 Sunday.

“A day like today makes me miss my mom even more,” Moustakas said of his mother Connie, who passed way on Aug. 9, 2015. “Mother’s Day is special, but I miss my mom every day. It doesn’t take a day like today to miss her.

“Anytime I hit a home run, I think about my mom and always point up to her. In order to do that, is a pretty cool feeling. Today was no different, just a tie game

and thinking about my mom pretty much all the time.”

Jorge Soler and Drew Butera also homered for the Royals. Soler’s 464foot shot to center leading off the seventh was the longest by a Kansas City player this season.

The Royals have won four straight, matching a season high, and six of seven since moving Alcides Escobar to the leadoff spot.

Moustakas homered off Kevin Gausman with Butera and Escobar aboard in a five-run fourth when the Royals sent 11 men to the plate.

Gausman was pulled after retiring only 10 of the 21 batters he faced, allowing five runs and nine hits with two walks.

“It’s frustrating,” Gausman said. “I think they started eliminating my curveball early in

the game, when I get in those situations where I have to throw a strike, the hitters pretty much have a good idea what they’re going to get.

They didn’t really miss any pitches that were in the strike zone and even some pitches that were out of the strike zone.”

The Royals scored two runs, one unearned, in the fifth, which included Alex Gordon scoring from second on Manny Machado’s throwing error after Escobar’s bunt.

The Orioles jumped on Royals starter Chris Young for five runs in 3 2/3 innings. Young gave up home run to Chris Davis to leadoff the second and a two-run shot in a four-run fourth to Caleb Joseph to finish his day.

Ryan Flaherty contributed a two-run double in the fourth.

Newton Trap Team members competed in a trap shoot Saturday hosted by Grinnell. Another group of shooters competed in sporting clays and skeet at Pella on Saturday.

At Grinnell, the Newton varsity squad of Brian Bleakney, Devon Young, Nathan Tramel, Colton Kingery and Devon Hobbs combined for a team score of 197.

The squad finished ninth out of 14 squads.

Young led the varsity with a high score of 46 broken targets to take 10th out of 74 shooters in the varsity men’s division. Other teams competing were from Cedar Rapids Prairie, Centerville, BGM, Montezuma, Sigourney, Ankeny, Nevada and Baxter.

larie Zach, Landon Gearhart, Ryan Brown and Dylan Farver shot a 177 combined score for fifth place out of eight squads.

Vest finished fourth out of 49 male shooters with a score of 46. Zach hit 33 targets to place second in the women’s junior varsity division.

In the competition at Pella, the Newton squad placed seventh in the sporting clays event led

by Logan Zaabel with a 90-of-100 targets hit.

Zaabel finished eighth out of 33 shooters in the varsity male division. Brooke Gifford hit 78 targets to place fifth out of 12 varsity female shooters.

Evan Cook recorded Newton’s best score in the skeet event. He had a 43 to place ninth out of 20 shooters.

Molina homers twice to help Cardinals beat Cubs ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis infielder Matt Carpenter finally got the best of close friend Jake Arrieta.

But he isn’t going to brag about it.

Carpenter slammed a two-run homer, Yadier Molina homered twice and Adam Wainwright threw seven shutout innings to lead the Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Randal Grichuk added three hits for St. Louis, which won for the eighth time in nine games. Chicago has lost three of four.

Carpenter entered his third-inning at-bat with a 1-for-31 career slate against Arrieta. The two were college teammates at TCU. Carpenter served as a groomsman at Arrieta’s wedding.

“It was great to get out there and finally have some success against him,” Carpenter said. “He’s given me a hard time over the years, we jab back-and-forth but, I won’t rub that kind of stuff in.”

Arrieta (4-3) realized that his success against Carpenter was not going to last forever.

“A hitter like that, regardless of the history - you make a mistake and they’re going to make you pay for it,” Arrieta said.

Carpenter came into the game 0-for-27 against Arrieta in the regular season and 1-for-3 in the post season. He grounded back to the mound in his first trip to the plate.

“I always kid him that I’m a .300 hitter against him in the post-season,” Carpenter said.

Molina recorded the third multi-homer game of his career.

His last came on Aug. 21, 2011 at Wrigley Field. He drilled a two-run homer off Arrieta in the second inning.

Swinging a pink bat in honor of mother’s day, Molina added a solo blast off Brian Duensing in the

eighth. Molina pointed to his mother, Gladys, in the stands as he headed into the dugout.

“It’s special, every time you have your family and your mama here,” Molina said. “I got lucky and put a good swing on it.”

Wainwright (3-3) allowed four hits in a 102-pitch stint. He struck out three and walked four. Wainwright had given up four earned run in each of his last three starts.

“It’s a good outing to build off,” Wainwright said. “I can still get better. I can still have better fastball command. It’s certainly a stepping stone.”

Trevor Rosenthal and Kevin Siegrist each pitched a perfect inning to complete the four-hitter.

Chicago had runners on in six of the first seven innings.

“Overall, we’re not doing a good job with runners in scoring position,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon said.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jason Kipnis batting at the top of the order seems like a good fit for the Cleveland Indians.

Kipnis, hitting leadoff for the first time this season, was 4 for 5 with two homers and four RBIs, and the Indians woke up from an offensive slumber in an 8-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall also homered for Cleveland, which had scored one run in 24 innings going into the game.

Indians manager Terry Francona tinkered with the lineup after his team was held to three hits in each of the first two games of the series.

Moustakas has HR, four RBIs, Royals finish sweep of Orioles KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Moustakas came through with a big homer and thought of his late mother, just like he does every time he goes deep.

Moustakas homered and drove in four runs to help the Kansas City Royals rally from five runs down to beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-8 Sunday.

“A day like today makes me miss my mom even more,” Moustakas said of his mother Connie, who passed way on Aug. 9, 2015. “Mother’s Day is special, but I miss my mom every day. It doesn’t take a day like today to miss her.

“Anytime I hit a home run, I think about my mom and always point up to her. In order to do that, is a pretty cool feeling. Today was no different, just a tie game

and thinking about my mom pretty much all the time.”

Jorge Soler and Drew Butera also homered for the Royals. Soler’s 464foot shot to center leading off the seventh was the longest by a Kansas City player this season.

The Royals have won four straight, matching a season high, and six of seven since moving Alcides Escobar to the leadoff spot.

Moustakas homered off Kevin Gausman with Butera and Escobar aboard in a five-run fourth when the Royals sent 11 men to the plate.

Gausman was pulled after retiring only 10 of the 21 batters he faced, allowing five runs and nine hits with two walks.

“It’s frustrating,” Gausman said. “I think they started eliminating my curveball early in

the game, when I get in those situations where I have to throw a strike, the hitters pretty much have a good idea what they’re going to get.

They didn’t really miss any pitches that were in the strike zone and even some pitches that were out of the strike zone.”

The Royals scored two runs, one unearned, in the fifth, which included Alex Gordon scoring from second on Manny Machado’s throwing error after Escobar’s bunt.

The Orioles jumped on Royals starter Chris Young for five runs in 3 2/3 innings. Young gave up home run to Chris Davis to leadoff the second and a two-run shot in a four-run fourth to Caleb Joseph to finish his day.

Ryan Flaherty contributed a two-run double in the fourth.

Newton Trap Team members competed in a trap shoot Saturday hosted by Grinnell. Another group of shooters competed in sporting clays and skeet at Pella on Saturday.

At Grinnell, the Newton varsity squad of Brian Bleakney, Devon Young, Nathan Tramel, Colton Kingery and Devon Hobbs combined for a team score of 197.

The squad finished ninth out of 14 squads.

Young led the varsity with a high score of 46 broken targets to take 10th out of 74 shooters in the varsity men’s division. Other teams competing were from Cedar Rapids Prairie, Centerville, BGM, Montezuma, Sigourney, Ankeny, Nevada and Baxter.

Newton’s junior varsity squad of Brodee Vest, Ma-

larie Zach, Landon Gearhart, Ryan Brown and Dylan Farver shot a 177 combined score for fifth place out of eight squads.

Vest finished fourth out of 49 male shooters with a score of 46. Zach hit 33 targets to place second in the women’s junior varsity division.

In the competition at Pella, the Newton squad placed seventh in the sporting clays event led

by Logan Zaabel with a 90-of-100 targets hit.

Zaabel finished eighth out of 33 shooters in the varsity male division. Brooke Gifford hit 78 targets to place fifth out of 12 varsity female shooters.

Evan Cook recorded Newton’s best score in the skeet event. He had a 43 to place ninth out of 20 shooters.

Molina homers twice to help Cardinals beat Cubs ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis infielder Matt Carpenter finally got the best of close friend Jake Arrieta.

But he isn’t going to brag about it.

Carpenter slammed a two-run homer, Yadier Molina homered twice and Adam Wainwright threw seven shutout innings to lead the Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Randal Grichuk added three hits for St. Louis, which won for the eighth time in nine games. Chicago has lost three of four.

Carpenter entered his third-inning at-bat with a 1-for-31 career slate against Arrieta. The two were college teammates at TCU. Carpenter served as a groomsman at Arrieta’s wedding.

“It was great to get out there and finally have some success against him,” Carpenter said. “He’s given me a hard time over the years, we jab back-and-forth but, I won’t rub that kind of stuff in.”

Arrieta (4-3) realized that his success against Carpenter was not going to last forever.

“A hitter like that, regardless of the history - you make a mistake and they’re going to make you pay for it,” Arrieta said.

Carpenter came into the game 0-for-27 against Arrieta in the regular season and 1-for-3 in the post season. He grounded back to the mound in his first trip to the plate.

“I always kid him that I’m a .300 hitter against him in the post-season,” Carpenter said.

Molina recorded the third multi-homer game of his career.

His last came on Aug. 21, 2011 at Wrigley Field. He drilled a two-run homer off Arrieta in the second inning.

Swinging a pink bat in honor of mother’s day, Molina added a solo blast off Brian Duensing in the

eighth. Molina pointed to his mother, Gladys, in the stands as he headed into the dugout.

“It’s special, every time you have your family and your mama here,” Molina said. “I got lucky and put a good swing on it.”

Wainwright (3-3) allowed four hits in a 102-pitch stint. He struck out three and walked four. Wainwright had given up four earned run in each of his last three starts.

“It’s a good outing to build off,” Wainwright said. “I can still get better. I can still have better fastball command. It’s certainly a stepping stone.”

Trevor Rosenthal and Kevin Siegrist each pitched a perfect inning to complete the four-hitter.

Chicago had runners on in six of the first seven innings.

“Overall, we’re not doing a good job with runners in scoring position,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon said.

By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News TAMA — Tori Church, Jordon Pritchard and Arieal Lum took on the challenge of learning a new sport this spring. The three Newton High athletes joined the Cardinal girls’ golf team.

“On Saturday, our three newer golfers had personal-best days for an 18-hole tournament. It shows the huge improvement they’ve made since the start of the season and the commitment they have in becoming better,” Newton head coach Scott Enyart said.

Church, a junior, finished with a 112 on rounds of 54 and 58 as Newton’s No. 4 score at Saturday’s South Tama Invitational.

Church’s 54 was her best score for nine holes.

Pritchard, a freshman, and Lum, a sophomore, carded personal-bests 118 and 119, respectively.

“Tori, Jordon and Arieal have been patient with the process of learning the game,” Enyart said.

“It was exciting to see all three have good rounds on Saturday.”

Newton finished fourth in a field of six teams Saturday.

The Cardinals had a four-player score of 407. Nevada won the team title with a 361 followed

by Grinnell with a 370 and Vin-

ton-Shellsburg with a 382 for second and third.

Benton fired a 414 for fifth.

South Tama was sixth with a 453.

Junior Alyana Reynolds finished one spot out of the medals — the top 10 — to lead the Cardinals. Reynolds had a 94 on rounds of 43 and 51 for 11th. Senior Lizzy Coyle shot a 100 (5248) and junior Taylor Dydell had a 101 (52-49).

Three of the top four Class 4A individual golfers were playing in the tournament. Grinnell freshman Bella Amador-Lacson, who is ranked No. 2, was the meet medalist with an 81.

Nevada senior Claire Ausman, ranked No. 3, was runner-up with an 82. Grinnell junior Alisha Ford, ranked No. 4, shot an 87 for third place.

“We didn’t putt very well Saturday. Our top three golfers are ready to get after it Monday to get back on track,” Enyart said.

Newton concludes its regular season when the Cardinals tee off at 4:15 p.m. Monday at a meet hosted by Norwalk. Then the Cardinals turn their focus to preparing for the Class 4A Region 3 meet on May 22 in Cedar Rapids.

By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News HUXELY — Playing six singles matches is the format for the Iowa high school girls’ team tennis postseason competition.

Newton High’s Cardinals participated in Saturday’s Class 1A Region 3 tournament action.

The Cardinals defeated Saydel 5-0 in the opening round then lost 5-0 to host Ballard. Ballard knocked off North Polk, 5-0, in the first round. Once one team reaches five match wins the meet ends.

“We played really well in both matchups, but Ballard was just the better team Saturday,” Newton head coach Erick Zehr said. “Several of our girls

played some of their best tennis of the year, and just ran into better opponents.”

Newton senior Megan Pressgrove beat Saydell’s Katie Schmidt 6-1, 6-1 and senior Katherine Thorpe netted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Megan Schmidt. Bethany Baumgartner gave Newton a 6-1, 6-0 win over Riley Backas.

Juniors Natalie Camp and Harlie Durr claimed wins — 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-4 — over Saydel’s Valdez Margarita and Casey Campbell, respectively.

The Cardinals prepare for the Class 1A Region 8 individual tournament, which is at 9 a.m. Thursday hosted by Pella Christian.

There will be singles and doubles matches played for berths at the 1A state tournament.

Lamont said she and assistant coach Mallory Sturtz were proud of the way the Cardinals played. She said the past week they have worked on their positioning, playing to space and their first touches.

“They executed everything we asked of them and more,” Lamont said. “We adjusted our offensive attack moving Anna Forsyth up in to our midfield and it’s proven to help our transition.”

Forsyth went down late in game when she had a head-to-head collision with an ADM player. The junior suffered a concussion and will be out of the lineup for a week, Lamont confirmed.

“We’re thankful for games like this.

They are great learning opportunities to see the girls perform in high-pressure situations and step up as a whole,” Lamont said.

Newton plays three of four games this week at home starting at 5:30 p.m.

Boell carded a 39 on the front nine and finished with a 42 on the back nine. He had seven pars and birdied the par 5 No. 6.

Sophomore Reed Worth finished with seven pars and shot a non-counting 83. Senior Ryan Hill recorded eight pars and finished with a non-counting 88. Hill was hurt badly by three or four holes.

The fact that Hill, the team’s No. 2 golfer, didn’t play well shows how deep the Mustangs can be.

“Anyone of them six guys can be in the top four. Everyone has bad days. We have just been lucky enough all year that we have always had at least four good scores,” Vander Linden said. “When you get five strokes within three shots of each other, that’s a good thing. We just need to keep it going and try to get a little better next week.”

Van Zante led the Raiders with an 84. He had a 41 on the front nine and a 43 on the back. Sophomore Austin Good carded a 91, freshman Simon McKinney added a 106 and senior Ben Gunderson shot a 128 to round out CMB’s scoring.
