Jasper County Auditor appointed to national election commission Newton Daily News Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has appointed Jasper County Auditor Dennis Parrott to the federal U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) Standards Board. Parrott will serve a two-year term. The board is comprised of one statewide and one local elections official from each state. “Dennis Parrott has served Jasper County and the voters of Iowa

very capably for many years and I’m confident he will do a great job representing the state on the EAC Standards Board,” Pate said. “My office partners with all 99 county auditors to conduct clean and fair elections in the state in non-partisan manner and Dennis exemplifies that partnership.” The EAC Board approves the standards for voting systems utilized throughout the country. Additionally, the board

works with U.S. Postal Service on election mail procedures and coordinates with various agencies on elections processes and programs. They also collaborate with the Federal Voting Assistance Program for military and overseas voters. “The work of the Election Assistance Commission Standards Board is extremely important to all who conduct elections, given the vigorous renewal of

claims of election fraud in the 2016 presidential election,” Parrott said. “I offer my thanks to Secretary of State Paul Pate for appointing me to the commission and I was proud to serve Iowa at the latest commission meeting.” Parrott, a Democrat, is currently serving his fourth term as Jasper County Auditor. He represented Iowa at the EAC Standards Board meetings in San Antonio last week.

The Jasper County portion of the run is set for 9 a.m. May 24 and will begin at Casey’s General Store at Iowa Speedway Drive and will finish at the entrance of the Westwood Golf Course on Highway 6 West. The group will include runners from the Newton Police Department, the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office, the Department of Correction and other Jasper County agencies. There will be a squad leading the runners and

a squad tailing the runners. The group will stop for a break at the courthouse lawn and will get the chance for a photo op. The run is part of a statewide relay in a lead up to the 2016 Special Olympics Iowa Summer Games, being held May 25-27 at Iowa State University in Ames. Cathy Tyson and her husband Jim began coordinating Newton athletes for the special Olympics because of the positive impact the event had on their two sons. “Our children, Eric and Joel,

have been involved since they were 10 years old and now they are 38 and 43,” Cathy said. “It’s such a positive thing and we became involved with it because we thought Progress Industries and Newton could benefit from it.” Tyson said the torch run is made to be much like the national special Olympics with athletes

cutting 26 applicants down to a final four. Teachers, administrators and community members are part of the screening process and will interview the candidates, Superintendent Bob Callaghan said. The opening at Thomas Jefferson came to the district’s attention after Principal Tom Bartello announced his intentions to resign from his Newton position at the end of this school year to take a principal gig at an elementary school in Johnston.

In light of National Foster Care Awareness Month, Iowa KidsNet in Jasper County hopes to bring awareness to the growing need of foster care in the county. Kevin and Denise Carroll, of rural Jasper County, know firsthand the joys of fostering children, and they also know the fulfillment that comes from adoption. Denise has been

a foster parent for 22 years. She said Kevin went into the marriage knowing he’d be a father figure to many. “He loves it, and he is so consistent with them,” Denise said. The couple has adopted 11 children who each have unique personalities and interests. “I have one who is the typical middle child who is the pleaser, I have a girl who is the athletic FOSTER | 3A
