Brookwood celebrates 55 years in business By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Succeeding at any task for more than half a century is an accomplishment to boast about. Everett Wood and Brookwood Heating and Air Conditioning are celebrating 55 years in business and they aren’t looking to stop any time soon. “I’m not a very good fisherman, I’m terrible at

golf so I might as well go to work everyday,” Wood said. Wood got his start in the heating and air business while living in Missouri where he grew up. At the time, in 1955, furnaces were the more popular appliance, Wood said, which made for inconsistent working hours throughout the year. “Finally, I bought a car and decided I had to have a solid, monthly income,”

Wood said. “In 1957, I came to work at Lennox dealer in Newton.” Five years later, the owner of the company he worked for passed away and the heir to the business elected to close the store. With their previous employers closing, Wood, along with business partner Bill Brooker, decided to open their own shop. BROOKWOOD | 3A

The Fourth of July fireworks display, along with the annual parade, are holiday staples in Newton. To continue the well received fireworks show, city council approved J & M Display for a three-year agreement starting in 2017. “We have had rave reviews of our fireworks display over the last couple of years,” councilwoman Evelyn George said. The Yarmouth company Muckler has supplied fireworks and put on the July Fourth show for the community for the past several years. Since the reviews of the program have been positive, a multi-year deal was offered again by J & M. “J & M Displays offer incentives to annual customers who sign a multiple year agreement with them,” city administrator Matt Muckler said. “The city had previously signed a three-year agreement with J & M Displays in 2013.”

The Progress Industries Foundation will be moving to a more central part of Newton following a purchase of the former KinderCare building located on North Third Avenue West. President of The Jasper Community Foundation Dan Skokan announced Wednesday its property at 202 N. Third Ave. W. will be used to consolidate Progress Industries corporate offices. Progress Industries is a nonprofit organization that provides services and support for people with physical and intellectual disabilities in central Iowa.
