Trial date set for child endangerment, sex abuse case By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News A Newton man charged with second-degree sexual abuse and child endangerment nearly two years ago will appear in court this month for a jury trial. Christopher L. Riggs, 26, was arrested June 16, 2015 after being accused of punching a 2-year-old child in the genitals, hitting a 4-year-old child in the mouth as well as sexual abusing a 11-yearold child. Riggs will appear for a jury trial at 9 a.m. March 15. According to police reports, the child’s mother said Riggs punched the 2-year-old in the genitals, causing a bruise. When officers spoke to the 11-year-old
victim, she said t h a t R i g g s hit the 4-yearold in the mouth, causing a swollen, Riggs split lip and loose tooth. When asked by officers if he had ever done anything to her, the victim said that three to four weeks ago before his arrest that he sexually assaulted her. The prospect of the Iowa Traffic Incident Management Training Center coming to Jasper County was discussed in detail during the Tuesday Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting. Dave Lorenzen, of the Iowa Department of Transportation and Scott Marler, Director of the Traffic Management Center were
on hand to lay out the details of the project and why it is a sought after investment for the state of Iowa. The proposal is to construct a training facility that allows responders including law enforcement, fire and rescue, emergency medical services, towing facilitators and any other entity that may be a part of a traffic incident to train in on real life scenarios in a safe setting. The ground selected is
located south of the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office on the 36 acres that previously housed the county care facility. “It is a concept that allows all of the different disciplines that may be on some type of scene or an incident, a crash, hazardous materials spill, a road closure, any type of incident that effects the highway system in Iowa, this would be a

Teachers recognized for excellence at NCSD board meeting By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News Six Newton teachers who received Excellence in Education Awards from the Newton Community Education Foundation were recognized at Monday night’s school board meeting. The teachers were nominated by students and parents for having an extraordinary impact in the district. Susan Sheeks, fourth grade teacher at Aurora Heights
Elementary; Melissa Sommars, second grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary; Jo Ellen Linn, special education teacher at Berg Middle School; Pat Riley, math teacher and golf coach at Newton High School; Ryan Comer, social studies teacher at West Academy; and Ann Nelson, librarian and media center teacher at Newton High School were honored for excellence. Newton principals spoke
about the contributions of each teacher and what makes them special. Speaking for NHS, Principal Bill Peters said Riley has done many great things with kids outside of the classroom, including coaching golf and baseball. Riley also does great work inside the classroom, Peters said. “His absolute strength is working with kids, helping them understand and feel comfortable with mathematics,” Peters said. “That is not
