City grants more than $36K to downtown improvements

By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News A Newton man accused of third-degree sexual abuse will appear in court next month for a jury trial after a 2015 incident. Colin C. Hansen, 20, is accused of forcing a sex act on a 16-year-old victim during an incident Hansen in June 2015. Hansen was arrested June 8, 2015. Hansen’s trial is set to begin March 1. According to the police report, the victim said Hansen messaged her on Facebook to meet at the Homedahl Park in Kellogg. Upon meeting, she said Hansen allegedly grabbed her arm and forced her into his car. Once in the car, Hansen allegedly asked for the victim to perform a sex act on him. She refused, and Hansen then grabbed her head and forced her to perform the act, according to the report. The victim also described a white T-shirt that Hansen used following the alleged sex abuse. When officers spoke with Hansen, he allegedly denied being at the park and said the victim had messaged him on Facebook, and they made plans to meet, but he never showed up. When officers found a wrinkled-up white T-shirt in the back of Hansen’s vehicle, he refused to speak any further with law enforcement. By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Work to update and renovate downtown Newton continues with three new micro-grants awarded totaling more than $36,000. Buildings or businesses owned by Brandi Mace, Kayla Juni and Joann

Kunkel will get a facelift with projects ranging from new signage to façade removal and renovation. “The establishment of the micro-grant program encourages Downtown owners to reinvest in their property and business in accordance with the downtown historic district de-

sign guidelines,” interim city administrator Jarrod Wellik said. The first project proposal comes from Mace for a major renovation to the buildings at 106 and 108 N. Second Ave. E. Work Mace plans to complete includes removal of old signage and the installation of new signage, remov-

ing non-historic façade on the two store fronts, a façade renovation at both the front and rear of the building, the installation of a new awning and paint work. Mace took advantage of the free design services provided GRANTS | 3A

The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) sponsors the activities, which are designed to increase the public’s awareness about the growing number of

employment opportunities the profession offers. The NCRA estimates about 5,500 court reporting jobs are expected to become available nationwide over the next five years. Patti Ziegler is the court reporting department chair at DMACC. She said there are currently 11 positions open in Iowa alone, and the starting salary is $50,000. “The jobs are there,” Ziegler said. “That said, it’s a very rigorous, very demanding

Fresh Powder

program because it requires lots and lots of practice.” Newton’s campus is the only college in the state that offers a court reporting program. There are currently about 35 students in the program, which is in its third year of operation. Students are trained to be both official and freelance court reporters. REPORTING | 3A
