By Bob Eschliman Daily News Editor “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” The motto of Special Olympics is well known, but perhaps isn’t as well known is the gargantuan effort put forth each year to ensure as many people with intellectual disabilities have a chance to participate. Despite those efforts, only one in 10 of those people currently get that opportunity. “The Knights of Columbus of Iowa really try to help,” Tim Bloom of Newton said. “It’s a noble cause, a good cause.” So when Tim learned from other Knights of Columbus

about the Over the Edge fundraising program, he thought it would be a great idea for someone in Newton to participate. So, he took it back to the KCs at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. “They thought it was a great idea, too,” he said. “But, they thought that since it was my idea, I should do it ... They promised to back my fundraising efforts.” Raising the money wasn’t too difficult. The Sacred Heart pastor, Fr. Bill Reynolds, promoted it during worship services, after which Tim would stand in the back of the church to accept donations. BLOOM See Page 5A

Members of the Newton Post 111 American Legion Riders donated $500 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa Jasper County Director Rita Baker. The Riders raised the money by doing a 150-mile charitable Fun Run on Aug. 24. “We were glad to do it and had a blast doing it,” Legion Rider John Heck said. Heck said the run started with 23

bikes and they hope this becomes an annual event for the Riders. Baker said her organizations volunteers and kids loved participating and she was very grateful to the riders.

This month, students in two Newton schools who may be struggling with “food insecurity” are getting relief from a new program called Ham Sandwiches for Kids. The program is made possible by a donation from the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa Select Farms to the Food Bank of Iowa. Four times a year, it provides $5 coupons for sliced or shaved ham to Iowa families who have children participating in the Food Bank of Iowa’s BackPack program. “Hunger relief is one of the major focuses of our foundation,” Jeff Hansen, CEO of Iowa Select Farms and co-founder of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, said. Because the Hansens were so passionate about providing hunger relief close to home, they launched a pilot program for the Ham Sandwiches for Kids program last year in Iowa Falls and Mount Ayr. The results were promising. “Our pilot program proved highly successful and we’re elated to expand it on a large scale in cooperation with the Food Bank of Iowa,” Hansen said. “Together, we’re going to have a major impact on reducing childhood hunger in central Iowa.” USDA “MyPlate” guidelines suggest children should receive up to 6 oz. of lean protein daily.
