Theelementaryschool,locatedinMt. Morris,burnedonFeb.12,2004,butnoone wasinjuredbecauseofactionbyschool staffandfirefighters.
“Becauseofthequickactionofthestaff andwell-practicedfiredrills,allstaffand 350studentsweresafelyoutofthebuilding withinminutes,” saidJoLynWard, a retiredteacher.
“Thefiredepartmentarrivedwithin minutesofthealarmandimmediately askedforadditionalhelpfrommanyneighboringtowns.”
Afterhoursofvaliantfight,which involvedmorethan75piecesoffireapparatusand175firefighters,theschoolwas declaredatotalloss,Wardsaid.
TheOregonSchoolBoardvotednot to rebuildtheschoolinMt.Morrisand insteadmovedelementarystudents toits school five miles to the east.
RahnElementary teachersgathereach yearforafireanniversarybreakfastin February.Thenagain,eachmonththe retiredteachersmeetforbreakfast at a localrestaurant.
InJuly,theteachersmetatNAVAin
Mt.MorriswhereMt.MorrisFireChief RobHoughwasaskedtojointhem.After readingabouttheplanstobuildanewfire stationinMt.Morristheteachersdecided tohelpwiththeeffort.
DonationsweregatheredfromtheRahn teachersandpresentedtothefirechief.

“Rightnow,theplanistodemolish thebuilding[theoldjail],”Ciesielsaid. “It’sgotabasementinit,sofillthe basementandgeteverythingcleaned upandthenletitsitforawhilewhile wedecidewhattodowiththatspace.”
