Fair weather: When temperatures dropped, crowds flocked to the Ogle County Fair

OREGON – Mother Nature cut a cool break for the Ogle County Fair prompting an estimated 9,500 people to visit the Fairgrounds over a five-day period.

“The weather was perfect,” Ogle County Fair Board President Tom Simpson said. “We could not have asked for any better weather. We had an excellent week.”

A drop in temperatures and the humidity came just in time for “fair week” Aug. 2-6. The cooler temps made for good crowds at the queen pageant on opening night and the Illini Tractor Pull on Aug. 3. On Aug. 4, the Big Hat Rodeo offered two shows – one in the afternoon and one in the evening.

“We had two rodeos this year and I was quite impressed with the number of people we had for the first show,” Simpson said.

The evening show almost filled the 3,200-capacity grandstands, he said.

As usual, those grandstands were at capacity Aug. 5 for the popular demolition derby.

“We were maxed out this year again, similar to 2021,” Simpson said. “The 3,200 capacity is based on 18 inches per person so, of course, some people are larger and some are smaller.”

The fair also included a carnival and the Ogle County 4-H Fair, complete with exhibits and livestock competitions.

“It’s quite a juggling act to get everything together,” Simpson said. “You have all the kids for carnivals and the kids and their animals for the 4-H show and then the commercial vendors and, of course, our sponsors. So everything is happening in the 38-acre fairgrounds. We really squeeze in a lot in that space.”

And those “jugglers” are all volunteers, including the fair board. which spends months planning the fair.

“We are all volunteers and that makes us rather unique,” Simpson said.

Simpson said he was pleased with this year’s attendance and thinks it is an indication the fair is growing in popularity.

“It looks like we are somewhat growing,” he said. “This year we had commercial vendors calling us to get in and I think that is an indicator in the right direction.”

Food vendors appeared to have a good fair. The Ag in the Classroom food stand was sold out of just about everything Aug. 6 and went through about

50 dozen ears of sweet corn – one of the stand’s fair staples. That stand is staffed by volunteers. “It was steady every day,” said Melinda Charbonneau, Ag in the Classroom coordinator. Distant guests have been enjoying our local museum

My helper is gone, but the things she did are very evident. All the high up things have been accomplished and the labeling has been done.

It was suggested that we have my name and phone number on the door and that has worked. Since I am only a couple of blocks away, I can be there in minutes.

Last Sunday, I had hardly settled in my chair when the phone rang and it was the Schryver family from Arizona. Of course, they wanted to see how we handled the Schryver Native American artifacts. They were impressed with the cabinetry made by Ed Olsen and Merle McCaffrey.

I am not sure they even realized how many artifacts Martin Schryver had in his collection. I show people how he recorded every artifact and where they were found or bought. They were impressed that Beth had put all of that information into the

POLO HISTORY

computer. She also had photographed the artifacts.

I showed them the work that Bill Rogers and Joe Bleistein did when they worked with the collection years ago. They were pleased how all of us have taken such good care of this collection. This also involved the Polo Library and Polo Historical Society.

The travelers were amazed at Dale Blough’s collection and how we have handled implementing Blough’s collection into our museum and tying it into Schryver’s artifacts. I tell people that both collections tell a different story.

The Schryver collection shows how Martin Schryver bought, dug in

fields in Pine Creek and dug in mounds for his collection. Some of that you could not do today. You cannot dig in a Native American mound today.

His artifacts came from all across the U.S. and other countries.

When Blough’s collection came in, it told an entirely different story. The arrowheads were all found in one place and said, “Native American Village.”

Blough even could tell where the shop was where they made their arrowheads. The ground was full of little flakes and Blough made two unique pictures from the flakes.

In the early 1900s when we were digging up along Rock River in order to build all sorts of new things, Frank Osborn was saving all the artifacts that were found. He also recorded where each village had been.

We have that on a special plat book

map. I point out to people where all the villages were along the river.

It was a good thing that we had people recording history and saving what they found. Osborn became very knowledgeable when it came to Native American history and he spoke all over the area. He lived to be 100.

Our guests from Arizona were Vera Ocker Berg and her family. She is the granddaughter of Armond and Vera Ocker and the niece of Elizabeth Kaufman.

While at the museum they took pictures and emailed them to Joby Kaufman in Texas. All these were people I remembered having lived in Polo many years ago. It was nice having them at the museum.

Some early settlers referred to Chicago as a ‘small’ settlement

Several of our early settlers passed through the Chicago area from Lake Michigan. Some of those early settlers mentioned in their writings that it was a very small settlement.

Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a free Black man, was the first permanent non-Iindigenous settler, having a house at the mouth of the Chicago River in the late 18th century. He left the Chicago area in 1800.

In 1803, the U.S. built Fort Dearborn on the Chicago River. It was destroyed by the Native Americans who were fighting with the British during the War of 1812.

Many of the inhabitants were killed or taken prisoner. Fort Dearborn was rebuilt in 1818 and used until 1837. The small fort was rebuilt when Illinois was officially founded and closed the same year that Oregon was founded.

The city of Chicago was incorporated the same year Oregon was founded in 1837. At this time, the population was about 300 people. In 1837, Chicago held its first mayoral election and elected William Ogden as mayor. Chicago was a center of traffic from the Great Lakes into the Mississippi River Basin. Chicago attracted German, Irish, Scandinavian, Jewish, Polish and Italian people. During

World War II, large numbers of African Americans migrated from the South.

In 1848, the opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal allowed shipping from the Great Lakes through Chicago to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.

In 1871, the C and I Railroad arrived in Oregon and the Great Chicago Fire occurred. More than 399 people were killed in the fire, 1,800 buildings were destroyed and 100,000 of the population of 300,000 people were homeless. At this time most of the buildings and sidewalks were constructed of wood.

The official flag of Chicago consists of two light blue horizontal bars or stripes on a field of white. Each bar is one-sixth the height of the full flag. Four bright red stars, with six points each, are set side by side in the middle third of the flag’s surface. In 1917, the

flag initially had two stars. It stayed that way until 1939.

The three sections of the white field and the two bars of blue represent geographical features of the city and the four stars represent important events. The stars represent the establishment of Fort Dearborn, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition in 1933-34.

The three white background areas of the flag represent, from top to bottom, the North, West and South sides of the city. The top blue bar represents Lake Michigan and the North branch of the Chicago River. The bottom blue bar represents the South branch of the river.

Ganymedes finish second at World Tournament of Historic Base Ball

DEARBORN, Michigan – After 24 hours of experiencing the thrill and agony of “base ball,” Oregon’s team found itself locked in another extra-inning battle for the Second Class championship at the 20th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball.

Sunday started with the Ganymedes beating the Rochester Grangers of Rochester Hills, Michigan, 21-7 in a 9:30 a.m. game to advance to the 12:30 p.m. championship, where they faced the Walker Tavern Wheels of Brooklyn, Michigan.

Vintage rules base ball (spelled as two words in the 1800s) is played with authentic-looking uniforms and no gloves and with “gentlemanly” conduct strongly encouraged. Tournament games were played on two fields at Greenfield Village, part of the Henry Ford Museum.

“This morning’s game was played as it should be,” Captain Mark Herman said before the championship game. “The Grangers were a worthy opponent.”

That game was a stark difference in sportsmanship seen in the Ganymedes’ last game on Saturday. The Grangers followed 1860s demeanor – no arguing of calls and no profanity. That was very different from the vocal Flat Rock Bear Clan, which came from behind to beat the Ganymedes on Saturday.

On Sunday in the championship game, the Ganymedes jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held the advantage until the third inning. The Wheels then scored three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a 10-8 lead.

The Ganymedes scored four in their half of the fifth to take a 12-10 lead.

The Wheels scored two runs in the sixth to tie it at 12-12. Each team scored three runs in the seventh inning before the Wheels exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning. A couple of dropped balls by the Ganymedes resulted in a 22-17 eight-inning loss. Vintage base ball games at the tournament are played for seven innings or 90 minutes.

Brett “Shifty” Rogers, the Ganymedes’ shortstop and 10-year veteran of the team, said he was pleased with the team’s effort during the tournament despite the late-inning losses.

“We played hard. We had a couple of guys injured, but we battled through that,” the 37-year-old said. “We had a couple of tough losses, but we had a good weekend. We were in every game.”

Herman echoed that sentiment after the nail-biting loss Sunday.

“I’m really proud of the team,” he said. “They played well. We scored a lot of runs and like Brett said we were in every game.”

Saturday was a day of ups and

downs for the Ganymedes, who won their first game and lost their second by one run in extra innings.

In their opening game, the Ganymedes got off to a slow start against the Columbus Buckeyes, but raced back to win the game 12-6 with line-drive hits and timely catches.

“When we were behind early, I thought oh, no, not again,” said Herman referring to last year’s winless showing. “But then we started hitting the ball into the gaps. Everything turned around. We had great team defense and hitting for the 11 Ganymedes players in this one.”

Next up was the Flat Rock Bear Clan, a vocal and boisterous team from Flat Rock, Michigan.

In the last time slot of the day, 3:30 p.m., the Ganymedes jumped out to a 12-1 lead through five innings and looked to be en route to a 2-0 record on the day. But that began to change in the sixth inning when Flat Rock scored seven runs to make it 12-8.

The Ganymedes added a run in the seventh inning, but Flat Rock scored four in the bottom of the inning with two outs and then gave up the final out to force another full inning despite reaching the 90-minute time limit for the game.

The game was sprinkled with modern-baseball emotion by Flat Rock, including complaints about the ball, arguments about base running calls and disagreements over plays at the plate.

The Ganymedes still held a one-run lead at 13-12 going into the final inning of play, but went scoreless in their at-bat.

They still held a one-run margin, but Flat Rock put a runner on first with no outs. The Ganymedes looked like they still were destined to win when Rogers fielded a “well-struck ball,” tossed it to second baseman Justin “Butter” Early for the force at second and Early threw to Steve “Scoop” Tilton at first for the second out.

But Flat Rock loaded the bases on a couple of Ganymede miscues and drove in the winning run for a 14-13 victory.

“What a heartbreaker for Oregon committing two two-out errors to give the Bear Clan the victory,” Herman said.

“You’ve got to play defense out here,” Early said, referring to the tournament. “We caught balls in the first game on Saturday, but we didn’t in our second.”

Flat Rock ended up winning the First Class championship when it downed Canton 13-9.

The tournament was held inside Greenfield Village, an attraction next to the Henry Ford Museum that features historic 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, items and structures collected by Henry Ford.

Model A and Model T cars and horse drawn wagons buzz by on the village streets as visitors stroll past a steam railroad yard, farms and artisan shops.

Some base ball spectators, such as Mikki Heng of Oregon, wore 1800s-era clothing to cheer on the team.

Herman won’t know until later this year if the Ganymedes will be invited to the 2024 tournament.

Members of the 2023 Ganymedes Base Ball’s 2023 World Tournament team were Michael “Mikey B” Benesh, Aaron “Two Bits” Berg, Eric “The Liberator” Berg, Justin “Butter” Early, Matt “Old Hickory” Gecan, Tyler “Timber King” Grant, Mark “Iron Chest” Herman, Tom “Dandy” Lesniak, Ryan “Morty” Mortlock, Brett “Shifty” Rogers, “Dollar” Bill Roschi, Kevin “The Kid” Stafford, Tim “Two Base “Strohecker, Mike “T-Bag” Thomas, Jay “All in” Throw and Steve “Scoop” Tilton.

Oregon’s vintage base ball team wins sportsmanship award

DEARBORN, Michigan – The Ganymedes suffered two heartbreaking losses in extra innings at the 20th World Tournament of Historic Base Ball, but the 2023 team came away with an award that reflects the whole premise of vintage base ball.

The 15-member Oregon-based team was presented with the Henry Chadwick Sportsmanship Award after the two-day tournament held at the his -

toric Greenfield Village, which is part of the Henry Ford Museum.

The award is based on Chadwick’s “Base Ball Book of Reference,” first published in 1866, which describes the model base ball player as:

“His conduct is as much marked by a courtesy of demeanor and liberality of action as it is by excellence in the beauties of the game. He never takes ungentlemanly advantage of his opponent, but acts toward them as he would wish them to act toward himself. He plays the game throughout, whether

winning or losing, to the best of his abilities, and retires from the field content with the result whatever it may be.”

Organizers of the tournament said this when presenting the award: “All who have taken the field against the Oregon Ganymedes Base Ball Club will attest that each ballist of that club fulfills these characteristics to a ‘T.’ ”

Ganymedes captain Mark Herman said he was honored the team won the award.

“The Ganymedes played some of

the best ball ever and you couldn’t have had more exciting games,” Herman said. “A couple of plays made the difference. I’m very proud of our team’s effort. We had many compliments from strangers regarding out team’s play.”

The Ganymedes have two more games on their schedule for the 2023 season. They will play the Creston Regulators on Sunday, Sept. 17, in Creston and the McHenry County Independants on Saturday, Sept. 23, in Prairie Grove.

Born: September 24, 1922

Died: July 1, 2023

MT. MORRIS, IL – Lavonne Irma Anderson, age 100, passed away on July 1st, 2023 at Allure at Pinecrest Manor, Mt. Morris, IL. Lavonne was born on September 24th, 1922, on the family farm in Cherry Grove Township, Lanark, IL, one of six children born to Elmer and Etta (Bolinger) Gaul.

She married Harry William Anderson in Mt. Morris on April 22, 1945, at the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren. Lavonne & Harry met roller skating in Lanark, IL.

Lavonne attended one room school in Cherry Grove. At 13 she moved into Lanark with Dr. Seyfrath and family where she was a nanny for their two children. This allowed her to attend high school. She graduated from

RICHARD “DICK” LITTLE

Born: August 16, 1926 in Oregon, IL

Died: August 8, 2023 in Oregon, IL

This world has lost a unique, hardworking husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Richard Little was born on a farm at the corner of Daysville Road and Route 64, across from the Oregon Golf Course, on August 16, 1926. The golf course was built in the same year. He attended Oak Ridge School for eight years, all taught by Evelyn Graf, a teacher he respected greatly and appreciated in later years. Dick graduated high school in 1944 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 7, 1944. He served most of 1946 in Germany. He strongly considered staying in the Army. Things might have been quite different for us if he had

ate a 4x4-inch trinket tray.

Cost is $30, which includes all materials, tools and the double “firing” of each tray. Workshop size is limited in order to provide each participant with individual attention.

Participants must wear closed-toed shoes since they will be nipping, grinding and handling small pieces of glass.

Deadline to register is Sept. 6. Register for the workshop by calling Valerie at 815-441-2161. Sign up soon because space is limited.

Lanark High School Class of 1941.

In her early working years Lavonne worked at the Savanna, IL ordinance depot soldering ammunition cans during WWII. She also waitressed, performed bookwork, worked at Lawton’s Dairy and the Royal Blue Store. She sold World Book’ Encyclopedias for decades. She assisted Harry in running the Poultry Tribune Experimental Farm for Watt Publishing Co. south of Mt. Morris. Lavonne retired from the sandstone building of Watt Publishing in 1984.

Lavonne was a member of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren where she taught Sunday School. She had a faith that made her grandchildren envious. She had an unbelievable ability to give life’s struggles to the hands of the Lord. She was also a Girl Scout Leader when Jan and Jo were young.

In 1956, moving from the farm, Harry and Lavonne completed their brick home on South McKendrie Ave. Side by side they dug the basement by hand, poured the concrete, cut the rafters and laid all 7,000 bricks. Lavonne lived on the same street for nearly

done so. Dick was discharged on November 23, 1946.

Dick married Dolores Chamberlin on September 4, 1948. He had asked her for a date while they both were in high school, but she needed to ask her father. He said he knew Dick’s Dad in their high school days and wouldn’t allow her to go. They have never been able to figure that one out.

Dick worked on a farm by the month during 1949, the year their son, David, was born. Dick and Dee started farming on their own on January 1, 1950, and he continued farming until after harvest 2014. It was the best crop he had ever had, and he decided to quit while at the top.

They bought a farm in 1954 that later became White Pines Ranch. Over the years, they owned and rented farms in Pine Creek, Oregon, Grand Detour, and Rockvale Townships. The Ranch was the highlight of Dick’s life. Dick Little was not religious but believed in the Golden Rule and tried to live his life that way. He enjoyed working with

80 years. From the Poultry Farm, to the brick house, to Pinecrest, Lavonne moved less than one mile.

She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter and was a member of the Pinecreek Ladies. She loved playing Rummikub and Bridge, of which she belonged to several clubs. She and Harry were avid antiquers and loved collecting their entire lives. They traveled all across the country, from Maine to Hawaii. They even traveled abroad several times. Their visit to the Holy Land was exceptionally important to them.

Lavonne was spirited and independent, when she believed something, she believed, there was no room for debate. One of her sayings was “a big fat damn it never hurt anyone ... but I pray.” She drove until she was 97 and lived at home until a stroke at 98.

Lavonne is survived by her daughter JoLynn Kay (Michael) Ward, Mt. Morris, IL; son-in-law Gerry Hough III, Mt. Morris, IL; grandchildren, AnnEtta (Gabe) Young, Mt Carroll, IL, Mindy Ward, Savanna, GA, Casey Ward, Mt. Morris, IL, Kelly (Cheryl) Ward, Chattanooga, TN,

many people over the years at the Ranch. Dick was particularly supportive of young people regarding education and employment. He was always willing to help young people get back into school or college or give them a job to get them started in life. He has always felt that working at White Pines Ranch is a good stepping stone to bigger and better things. He was an excellent employer and had a very good working relationship with his employees. The staff structure at the Ranch has always been more like a family than an organizational chart.

Dick served as a trustee of the Oregon Fire Protection District for twenty-five years. He also served on several boards. He is being laid to rest next to his wife and the Ranch he loved - in that order - Dee sometimes doubted that order, but it really was that way.

Our family would like to thank Larry Blume for being the “best damn neighbor and friend an old man could ask for.”

He is preceded in death by his wife, Dee, and
