COLETA —There’s alot more than justtwo storiesinLeeand KathyHinrichs’ barn.
Upstairs, downstairs, everywhere youlookthere arestories aboutlife onthe farm, andtheColetacoupleis happyto tellthem.

“What we doinside ourbarnisto trytojog yourmemory,”Kathy said. “We’llmakeit remind youofsomething your grandmahad, ormaybe when youwerelittleyouremember something —justsomethingtojog aperson’smemory. We thinkwedo that quiteoften, andpeople enjoy that.”
Thecouplegrewup notfar from theircurrenthomeandhave spent yearspickingand antique hunting, amassing an impressivecollection that’s foundahomeinthebarn that they built in2011. Today, inside those redwalls, visitorswill find toys, tools andtrinkets, signs ofsimplertimes, furniture andfarmhouse decorfromdaysgoneby, andmuch more.
Many oftheitems tell ataleof toilin the fields, whenfarmers used their handstoplow fields andnot push buttons.

comefrom old buildings bothof theirparentsusedtoown.Erecting the building wasafamilyaffair, with theHinrichs’ children and grandchildrenall involved— even ifit wasjust “forthehellofit,” as Leelikestotellvisitors.
“Wehadalways talkedabout building abarn, andsojustdecided wewere goingto buildone andIhadstuff stashed away from auctions,”Leesaid “One day we were workingonit, anditcameto methat,I’m building thisbarn for thehellofit.”
TheHinrichs’, whohave been married for52 years, hadpiled up acollectionofstuff forabout a decadebefore they builtthebarn. Along allofthe repurposed wood walls arefarmsigns, hammers, axes, wrenches, license plates, toy trucks, gardentools—justabout anythingone would findinon an oldfarm, orinafarmhouse.
Acquiringtheabundance of artifactswasfun, theHinrichssaid, butthese days it getsalittleharder toaddnewpiecesofthepastbecauseofhowscarce oldbarns are becoming alongtherural landscape. Red woodbarns aregiving wayto white Morton buildingson many farms, makingscavenger huntsalittlemoreofa challenge.
“Wegrewupwithbarns, and when youthinkabout, thebarn is going away,” Kathysaid. “Ifit’s a woodenbarn,it’s going away. Peopleintoday’s world, theydon’t milkinabarnlike that; andthe farmers thatownthem, they really can’tusethem for anythingbecausetheirequipmentistoobig, ortheydon’t have animals. Some people arepreservingthem, but it’s an expensive thingtodo.”
Anothersignofthetimes are—signsofthetimes.Lee’s gatheredacollectionofvintage farm-relatedadsigns, butthat’s becoming atoughertasktoo, as many signsdidn’tsurvivefarmers’ ingenuity, having beencut and bentand repurposed for other usesonthefarm; andtheones thatdidsurvivehave already beenpickedoff walls and putinto
collections. Somestill shinewith theiroriginalcolor, butsome show their age.
Localitems reallyintriguethe Hinrichs, whether it’s signage, milk jugsfrom dairies, orthe many rulers andcalendarsthat agbusinesses wouldgiveaway foradvertising.
“I liketopickupoldsigns, but it’s reallykindofhard,”Leesaid.
“Thesignshave becomejustenormously expensive becausethere’s not much around.Allofthese old farmersthathadthem, theyjust gotpitched outtotheside.”
“Someofthem would getused topatchaholeina building,” Kathy said. “Farmers used whattheyhad. They didn’t go to Menardsto get anything.”
Hangingalongthe ceilinginone ofthe rooms area lineof old cloth feedsacks fromlocalstores and elevatorsthat arelong gone. Oneof themis for MasterMix Feed, which Lee’sfather would getfrom an elevatorin Hazelhurst, eastofMilledgeville. Identifying feedsacks can sometimesbea challenge It’s not alwayseasyto findasackwiththe printingstilllegible. Yearsofuse and washingleave theinkaslittle more thanafadedmemory.
“Theyusedtousethese feed
sacksafterwards for clothes,”Lee said. “They wouldhave instructionstotell youhowto remove the inkfromthesack. Thepeopleback then would cutthem up anduse them for clothing, dishtowels or whatever. Back inthe old days, they used everythingthey had.”
Although Leehasbeen around farms andbarnshisentire life, he still comesacrosstools andtrinkets thathehasn’t laid eyesonbefore. That’s whenhisdetective skills kickin. He’lltakethetimetotrack downinformation andlearnmore aboutapiece and find out whatit wasused for. Take forexampleall thewrenchesthatlinehis walls, big andsmall, curved andstraight. Decades ago, farmersdidn’t just break outasocketsetto bustabolt loose; there were differentwrenches fordifferent jobs.
“SometimesIhave somethings thatI’mnot100percentcertain whatthey are, andthensomeone will know whatthey wereused for,” Leesaid. “A lotofpeoplewillask questionsabout whatthey were and whythey were used.”
Wrenches aren’t theonly tools ondisplay:Thebarnsalsohouses axes, solderingirons, clevises, hacksaws, tile spacers, branding
irons, pitch forks, hayhooks, froggers, hinges, fencestretchers, steel tractorseats, gardeningtools, thermometers andpostpounders andmore, lotsmore. TheHinrichs’ findthetoolsas-is andthentake timeto cleantherustoff ofthem without damagingtheitem.
Cornknivesalso arepart ofthe vastcollection.Oneofthemhas a steel handleonit, and whenLee foundit, it rekindledmemoriesof his childhood.
“Webrokesomany different cornknife handlesthat my dad started puttingsteel handleson themso wewouldn’t breakthem,” Leesaid.“We foundoneat an auction recently, andIhadto getit. It justhadtocomehomewithme.”
Elsewhere, shovels of various sizes arelined up alongone wall, includingoneused byphone and electriccompaniestoinstall poles.
“I hadsomeonefromCommonwealthEdisoncomeinone day andtoldmeiftheyputapolein that was100 feettall, ithad to be 12 feetintheground,” Leesaid “I can’timaginedigging12 feetdown by hand. The firstcoupleof feet ain’t bad, butafterthatit getspretty rough.”
