Monroe City Councilwomen Alicia Hansen and Amber Nickelson will not seek re-election in November, according to election filings complied last week by city hall. The look of the Nov. 7 city election ballot came into focus after last week’s filing deadline, and only one sitting council member and Mayor Duinick Doug Duinick will seek another term. Jean Goemaat will seek re-election in a field of five other candidates. Three atlarge seats are up for grabs in Monroe, and according to city code and Iowa election laws, the top three vote getters will be seated on the next council. Goemaat Seeking council seats are long-time Monroe resident Richard Aalbers; Sawdust and Grace woodworking co-owner Sarah McCray; Heartland AEA Special Education Consultant Jennifer St. Peter; CJ’s Bar & Grill Owner Carolyn Daniels; and Heartland Iowa Realty Agent Andrea Steenhoek. Duinick is running unopposed.

There will be a slight change to the schedule for this year’s PCM Homecoming festivities. Traditionally, PCM High School holds its annual Spirit Night on Thursdays, with the parade to follow Friday afternoon in downtown Monroe before the homecoming football game. But this year, district administration has decided to combine the activities holding them all on one night. The 2017 Homecoming parade will beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, marching into downtown Monroe’s Public Square followed directly by the Spirit Night, pep rally and powderfuff football game at PCM High School. PCM Superintendent Brad Jermeland said after last year’s homecoming, staff members had a conversation about making homecoming celebrations more efficient and eliminate busing students from Prairie City to Monroe on Friday afternoon. “On the Friday, we’d been busing

Monroe High School graduate, Terry Bellon sits in his 1958 BMW Isetta Friday near his home in Monroe. The car, which is fully dressed in its flags, logo magnets and fez, has participated in at least 250 parades.

Decked out in a fez and waving the American and Iowa flags, many people around Monroe may have noticed a peculiar-looking, red bubble speeding through town and parades around Iowa. Although it is not a tiny space craft zooming through the Hawkeye State, it is definitely a rarity worth stopping for and getting a closer look. “From the first time I saw it, I was fascinated with that car,” Terry Bellon, the owner of the 1958 957 BMW Isetta 300 Ex-

port Sliding Window Convertible said. “It has a little, BMW single-cylinder motorcycle engine – like 12 horse power, 250 cc.” When Bellon was 10 years old, he remembered watching bright red, BMW Isettas zig zag through a parade route. He said he couldn’t remember much from that day, but he said he will always remember one thing that car was cool. “There were 17 or 18 coming down the street. It just looked pretty cool,” the Monroe resident said. “During a parade, the kids See CAR — Page 2
