y day he may be a mild-mannered graphic designer, but by night Winston Gambro is a creator of caped crusader and musclebound heroes. The Yorkville native recently had some of his comic book artwork on display at the Yorkville Public Library. Growing up as a fan of Marvel Com-
ics, Gambro said he was encouraged to draw. “I think like lots of kids I just drew,” he said. “I mean, I got a lot of positive reinforcement over the years and I just stuck with it. Yeah, like in school, that was really the one thing I was really good at, so I thought I might as well try to make a career out of it.” Gambro studied graphic design at North Central College in Naperville and
now works for Launched Digital Marketing in website development. He says while he enjoys his job as a graphic designer, he is passionate about his comic book artwork. “Comic books are really the career I want to get into; like that’s the dream job,” he said. Gambro’s favorite character to draw is Spider-Man, though he admits it can be difficult.
The title of this piece is “Superman Meditation.” Gambro says he wanted to show a different style of Superman, one with a lot of purples and muted colors. The hooded cape is inspired by Frank Quitely’s Superman in “AllStar Superman,” according to Gambro. “The whole thing with him is he moves like a spider, which is kind of weird to say but you have to forget all anatomy if you want to draw him,” he said. “If you see Spider-Man doing a web fling or whatever, he’ll have like his head between his knees while he flies and a normal person can’t do that so every rule I’ve learned I have to forget.”
