The Future is Not the Past SPONSORED BY

If nothing else, life is an adventure … never stagnant or dull. Interest rates are at all-time lows, in fact some countries have negative interest rates. These means that you pay them to hold your money. The Fed may raise interest rates in the US but it is questionable how high they can go if other countries have negative rates. Then the stock market has been at all-time highs for the past few years. Some ups and downs but still historically really high. Furthermore, there is the US economy and the US stock market but the world is becoming more and more integrated so that we cannot ignore the economies and stock markets of the rest of the world. Coca-Cola and McDonalds are US companies but they saturate the entire world. The world is constantly evolving and the strategies of the past may not have the same impact as they used to. Bonds used to be a stabilizing, conservative part of a portfolio, especially during retirement. Investors are flocking to dividend-paying large-cap stocks to provide retirement income and portfolio stability. This strategy works until the cost of those stocks grows too high and investors start

over-paying for them. The other concern is that, at some point, the company may be paying out more dividend than they can cover with revenue and the dividend will be reduced, thus causing the value of the stock to drop. Real estate and utilities are the other go-to sectors for stability since they tend to pay a more consistent dividend, although, oil prices did drop last year and some utilities followed. Ideas? Diversify everywhere. Final thought? Watch how much you look at past performance to help determine potential future performance, for example, the future of bond returns may be quite different from the past.
