WELCOME TO THE OSWEGO AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE he Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce has been here and is here to help your business during COVID and all the time.

When covid hit almost a year ago, we at the chamber office experienced something we had never experience before along with all of you. We quickly geared up and even though working at home for a couple of months came up with ways to support our members and the entire business community.

We set up several zoom meetings with the Oswego Village President Troy Parlier, our State Representative Mark Batinick, our leads groups and kept in contact with the US Chamber and the IL Chamber to keep up with current details and programs that were being offered through the state. We participated in many chamber zooms to find out how other chambers were helping their members and to share what we were doing. We participated in other networking organization zooms to continue to access and implement ideas for our members.

Here are some of the other things we did: n We created a spreadsheet with ALL the restaurants in Oswego & our member restaurants in surround communities with their hours, if they offered curbside pickup, delivery options and more to keep the word going. n We created a COVID informational hub on our website where we could keep you updated on hours, rules & regulations our members had in place for appointments, curbside & online ordering. n We created the Shop Small in Kendall County and Things to do with kiddos during quarantine groups online where our local businesses (members & nonmembers) could promote their businesses and share their ideas.

n Flat Angie made appearances in front of local businesses and photos were posted online to remind people to show our members and to shop local. n We helped create a video for our downtown and created several videos for our Facebook page to remind people to #shoplocal, #ShopOswego, #ShopKendallCounty & #ShopSmall n We used our text messaging system during the unrest to update you on how things were going in Oswego We came back to our offices 1st of June, held several Ribbon Cuttings this summer and early fall, held in person events for people who were comfortable attending and continue to update everyone on grants, loans and counts. We held our Golf Outing, combined our Annual Dinner with our New Member Dinner and held an in person 5k/8K in late October. Runners were thrilled to have a live event and we had social distancing protocols in place.

All in all, we were here for our members with updates, information and promotion. We posted and updated all hours of day and night to keep you informed with the most up to date information we had.

“Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere you find yourself” – Anonymous his time last year we were just coming off a very successful year and were eagerly looking forward to the next. We delivered great news at the State of the Village address and the message was optimistic and exciting. We had a great year and were just getting started!

Then the nation was plunged into a deep freeze in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic. The go-go mode at the Village quickly shifted to fact finding and concerns for the safety of our Village.

We soon found out real information was lacking, and without that, decisions could only be best guesses. We found ourselves in the middle of nowhere…but we weren’t there alone.

We immediately responded, together – Village government, the business community and residents all learning together, working together, striving together. We discovered a wonderful thing – that we could rely on each other in the worst of times. Soon we found that by working together, we could overcome the obstacles in front of us.

The Village supported our businesses with executive orders, grants and loans to keep shops running and doors open. Our Chamber rallied our business community and found new ways to innovate and operate. Our residents stayed committed to supporting both. Now, as a vaccine is being distributed across our country and state, we can see light at the end of the tunnel. In the middle of nowhere, we found ourselves.

Better yet, we are coming out of the darkness with momentum! The Village Board has recently approved several new concept plans for development. Several new restaurants have opened their doors with more to come.

The financial health of the Village is sound with revenues exceeding expenditures through the first nine months of this fiscal year. Yes, we have found ourselves and eagerly look to the opportunities that lay ahead!

#OSWEGOSTRONG elcome to the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce Community Guide.

Who knew that 12 months ago our community would have been thrown into a global pandemic and civil unrest? This past year, 2020, will go down in history as the year that changed our everyday lives, how we do business, how our kids go to school and how we socialize. Our community and businesses had many unforeseen obstacles to overcome and we learned a few new things along the way some good and some not. But one thing that was apparent throughout the past year was that our community came together to support the Village of Oswego and local businesses.

Our Village lead by Mayor Troy Parlier met with the department heads within the village government and rallied the village resources to make sure the people of our community had the resources they needed. Then our Mayor met with the Chamber and local business leaders to make sure companies were getting the support they needed including how they could keep their businesses open and giving guidance on safe practices. For example, our local government offered restaurants jersey barriers and picnic tables for outdoor dining, allowed tents for outdoor dining and service for patrons to be protected from the elements without permitting and cocktails to go under

the current liquor licenses to assist the restaurant and bar industry.

Our local businesses quickly created curb side pick-up programs, launched online purchasing platforms or created outdoor dining experiences when just a few months ago none of these services were being offered. Many businesses pivoted to produce or donate crucial supplies to our front-line workers that were in limited supply.

We are the chamber including the Board of Directors, multiple committees and chamber members, which offer our community many resources. Daily text message updates during the civil unrest, countless zoom meetings to discuss the phased changes, when the phases allowed a gathering and networking opportunities the chamber worked diligently to offer safe events, identified grant opportunities and PPP and EDIL loan guidance.

And then we have one of the most crucial parts of our community, our residents.

They continued to shop, utilize our service industry members and continued to support our restaurants and bars. Without the support of our residents many of our local businesses would have closed their doors.

We hope as we move forward in 2021 our recovery continues and the sense of community that allowed us to unite and find the positive in what was a challenging year continues to strengthen.

FRONT-LINE WORKERS COME IN MANY FORMS

ell into year two of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, front-line workers in the Oswego area have proven to be critical assets not only in the care of patients, but also in helping to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

“Of course doctors and nurses spend the most time with patients, but it takes an entire team to provide safe, effective and compassionate care,” said Mary Shilkaitis, senior vice president and CEO of Rush Copley Medical Center, in Aurora.“The first person they meet can be a first responder, then it could be security or a registrar.” Shilkaitis noted the complex series of steps necessary from admitting to discharge home.

“Very few community members are aware of all the behind-the-scenes essential workers, even our supply team workers and the interpretive providers if there is a language barrier.” Front-line workers also include security team members, phlebotomists, transporters, lab workers and more. “As we work through this pandemic together as a healthcare team it takes many hands,” Shilkaitis said.

Jean Rader, RN. director, Critical Care and Ortho Spine, at Edward-Elmhurst Health, in Warrenville, echoed Shilkaitis’s assessment, noting the importance of front-line workers such as patient care techs, phlebotomists, respiratory therapists, central sterile processing transporters, and central distribu-

tion workers who bring gowns and masks. “A sidebar job that sometimes gets forgotten, but we really depend on, is the facilities quality check people who quietly check airflow daily to make sure it goes into, and not out of, patients’ rooms,” Rader said.

The Oswego Police Department has its own front-line workers, including sworn police officers and civilian employees. “Our civilian employees interact with the public, assisting with motor assists, parking and animal complaints and crashes,” said Chief Jeff Burgner. “They’re definitely front line. We have a 24/7 records operation and a front desk staffed with our records staff. Although we have a window that’s going to block them from some contaminants, they are the front line workers here.”

Burgner said.

Oswego Fire Protection District Chief Mike Veseling said the department’s 74 firefighter-paramedics, “do a tremendous, tremendous job.

We keep exposure to a minimum while giving the best care possible to people in the community. We’re taking care of their medical needs but also stopping the spread of COVID by disinfecting our medical equipment and wearing the proper PPE. It’s quite an ordeal for our guys to transport a COVID patient because they have to literally disinfect everything they come into contact with in the vehicle as well as laundering their uniform and showering.”

MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS ARE BOOSTING OSWEGO’S ECONOMY

A

s Oswego and Kendall County emerge from the shadow of the pandemic, many aspects of life in the region will remain indelibly changed.

But Scott McMaster, economic development director for the village of Oswego, says some things will remain constant. Among them, the belief among many that Oswego remains a fantastic place to call home.

McMaster said he hears regularly of communities that have struggled amid the pandemic.

“But I’ve got to say, we here in Oswego seem to be doing pretty fantastic,” McMaster said.

In the past year, much of the action has centered on Oswego’s downtown area.

A host of investors, developers and property owners have continued to reshape and build up Oswego’s downtown.

“We’ll be looking at a lot of different, exciting things downtown over the next couple of years,” McMaster said.

He noted the village has welcomed several new restaurants downtown, including eclectic American upscale eatery 113 Main and two different Mexican restaurants, La Marimba and Freddie’s Off the Chain.

Another restaurant, The Dairy Barn, is expected to open in the summer of 2021 on the site of the former Dairy Hut building.

New retail and residential is on the way, as well, in the Hudson Crossing development, being delivered by developer Shodeen. When completed, Hudson Crossing will offer 280 luxury apartments, and more than 11,000 square feet of new restaurant and retail space on Washington Street.

And this, said McMaster, has sparked renewed interest in the corridor for developers.

“There is significant interest in the retail and residential space,” said McMaster, noting the project is “up and almost finished.”

And on Oswego’s primary retail route, Route 34 outside downtown, McMaster said developers continue to add new pieces, boosting that corridor’s draw, as well. He noted Raising Cane’s opened its new fast service restaurant there, and was met with enthusiastic lines of people, waiting to weave through the drive-through for the chain’s iconic chicken strips.

“We believe this is going to be a strong draw and boost for our downtown,” he said.

At the same time, he noted, work is being completed on improvements to U.S. Route 34 through downtown, as well. He said new traffic lights, in particular, will make the otherwise busy traffic corridor much more pedestrian friendly.

Oswego’s other busy corridors, however, have also seen continued development and growth, according to McMaster.

To this point, Orchard Road has been a “blank canvas,” McMaster said, anchored almost entirely by the Jewel Osco supermarket.

But the village continues to work toward opening Oswego’s new park and amphitheater, converting Orchard Road into an entertainment destination.

“With the Amphitheater opening, it’s bringing all new attention to that area,” he said. “Between downtown and Orchard Road, look for a lot of great things coming in the next 3-5 years.”

“We’re continuously filling in gaps, and adding more retail spaces, to bring people more of the good things they want out there,” said McMaster.

To McMaster, it’s little wonder PC Magazine named Oswego one of its top locations for people to choose to work from home now, and in the years to come.

“We think the changes in society are going to be a real positive for us,” he said.

“We expect we’ll see even more people coming out here, and being excited to become a part of the community, and take advantage of all the amenities Oswego offers.”

NEW BUSINESSES SHAPING THE FUTURE OF OSWEGO

hile many established shops and businesses shuddered to a halt last March, others that were in the process of getting up and running were faced with a tough decision - give up before the doors even opened or continue to push forward despite the state of the world.

In Oswego, many businesses opted to forge ahead.

“In 2020, we got 65 new businesses added to the chamber,” said Angie Hibben, president/ CEO of the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce. “Some were new, some were existing, some were joining the chamber to get marketing out.”

“We were originally slated to open back in July,” said Matt Verde, owner and partner at 113 Main. “But with COVID-19, everything got pushed back and delayed.”

The foundation was poured last winter and despite the construction delays, they made the tough decision to continue working towards opening.

“It was a terrifying time for businesses,” Hibben said.

“They’ve invested a lot of money and they don’t even know if they’re able to be open. Every day the rules changed. Every

day the regulations changed.

Every day the numbers changed. There was so much uncertainty.”

But for Verde, it hit even closer to home. Verde has been a resident of Oswego for 10 years and had his heart set on bringing a restaurant with a cool vibe and a great environment to his town.

“I’m a foodie and a restaurant guy, and I used to go everywhere but Oswego to enjoy food, drinks and get a great atmosphere,” Verde added.

“We wanted to give the people of Oswego no reason to go anywhere else.”

So far, the support for 113 Main has been outstanding, even with restrictions. While things like hosting parties and groups have been sidelined for now, Verde has been enforcing capacity and spacing requirements and monitoring staff for symptoms to allow for dine-in guests.

“The community has been fantastic,” Verde said. “We’ve gotten great support from residents and other local businesses and we’re looking forward to working with schools, charities and other local businesses.

We are going to do whatever we can to promote the downtown Oswego business district and contribute to the growth and development of this town.

“We’re happy to be a part of what Oswego is becoming.”

OSWEGO INDUSTRIAL PARKS HOST VARIETY OF BUSINESSES, SERVICES

W

hen you think of tenants in an industrial park, images of warehouses and manufacturing businesses might come to mind. But today’s industrial parks are often peppered with a variety of unique businesses ranging from chiropractors to gyms.

For Dominique Castillo, owner of Dominique’s Dog Grooming, moving into Stonehill Industrial Park last summer was a natural progression for her business.

She started out as a home-based business before moving into a strip mall. As her business and clientele grew, moving to an industrial park seemed like a better fit.

“When you run a business with pets, your location is very important for pet safety,” Castillo explains. “It’s a much safer road with less traffic, which are factors to consider in case a dog gets loose.”

The seclusion off a main road is also a plus for Prairie Pals Christian Preschool and Childcare, which is also located in the Stonehill Industrial Park.

“It’s not a typical location for child care and preschool, but the industrial park road is very accommodating for cars and buses in our pickup lane. We can have 30 cars lined up to pick up students with no major traffic delays,” says Leslie Kennedy, director of Prairie Pals.

Another benefit of being in an industrial park is the flexibility for unique spacing needs. For Prairie Pals, since the previous tenant was the school district’s Opportunity School, everything was mostly set up for their needs.

Although their businesses might be tucked away in an industrial park, both Castillo and Kennedy appreciate the community vibe with their neighbors.

“It’s like we have our own little community back here. As small

businesses, we look out for each other,” says Kennedy, who works with a landscaper and printer located in the industrial park.

When contemplating whether to move your business into an industrial park, it’s important to consider if your business depends on walk-up traffic since people won’t just stop by like they would in the downtown area.

For her business, Castillo notes it’s an advantage not being a walk-in business because people stopping by can become a distraction when they’re focusing on grooming the dogs.

“It’s wonderful to focus on the dogs in a timely manner and get them in and out.

It’s less stressful for the pets and so much safer,” she adds.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER HELPS ENTREPRENEURS

he coronavirus began crushing countless small businesses last year and pandemic pain has continued to plague many of those same businesses into 2021.

While there isn’t an answer to solve every business owner’s woes, there is help available through the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Waubonsee Community College.

“Basically what our program does is offer no cost business coaching, advising entrepreneurs and established small business owners,” said Harriet Parker, manager of the SBDC at Waubonsee. “We can help them at any stage of the business. So we look to help entrepreneurs looking to stay in business and those kind of starting up the process of forming their business.”

The SBDC at Waubonsee is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Department ofCommerce and Economic Opportunity, which affords it the opportunity to provide its assistance at minimal or no cost.

BLUE-COLLAR SCHOLARSHIP Recognizing that District 308 students interested in pursuing an apprenticeship or advanced education in the trades deserve the same opportunities of those seeking associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce has created the Blue-Collar Scholarship program.

U.S. Exterior Maintenance & Repair, Aquaduct Plumbing Services and Angie Hibben, executive director of the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce, are sponsoring the program.

“This scholarship allows students who receive it to offset costs of tools, clothing or books associated with their advanced education in the trades,” said Keith Moore, Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board and representative for U.S. Exterior Maintenance & Repair. “By assisting these students our goal is to create an environment in our community that welcomes these students so we can keep their talents in our community.”

Chamber members that are interested in participating in this important scholarship program are welcome to reach out to Hibben.

“I would guess that our bread and butter is our one-on-one coaching with business owners,” Parker said. “We really encourage them because we can help them with whatever they are looking for help with and also can be a sounding board. Sometimes you just need someone who isn’t a friend or family to talk through their ideas with to get some critical feedback. And we do a lot more in formal areas of assistance.”

“We’re pretty much here for anyone,” Parker said. “Most larger businesses have structure and can handle things internally. And if you’re outside of a service area, there are other SBDCs that may be a better resource for them.”

While Waubonsee has an SBDC, it’s just one of nearly 1,000 local centers in the United States and its territories available to provide no-cost business consulting and low-cost training.

Some of the ways Waubonsee’s SBDC helps small businesses is by performing financial checkups, troubleshooting management issues, developing marketing strategies, creating business plans, identifying funding opportunities, planning growth strategies, exploring other options and solving other business-related issues and concerns.

In addition, many are gaining job-specific skills through Waubonsee Community College to get started in new careers or obtaining specialized credentials to advance their skills through the school’s career programs. From accounting and auto body repair to welding technology and website development and plenty in between, Waubonsee’s career and technical education faculty are providing the real-world education that is required to succeed today and tomorrow.

OSWEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT A GO-TO SOURCE FOR EDUCATION AND ENJOYMENT

rom finding good books to read, to flipping through your favorite magazine online or taking time to learn a new skill or hobby, the Oswego Public Library offerings can engage all ages and help develop wonder and imagination.

At the helm of the Oswego Public Library is Sarah Skilton, who is in her 21st year as the library director. During her tenure she has witnessed the tremendous community growth and the continued developments of the library as it aims to provide services and opportunities for the residents of Oswego and Montgomery.

The Oswego campus is centrally located in downtown Oswego. “We’re right in the heart of everything going on,” Skilton said. In 2009 a second location was opened in Montgomery to serve its growing residential population.

Both locations are full-service libraries, Skilton said. Visitors will find collections of books, music CDs, and DVDs of movies and television shows whether they are searching for a title for enjoyment or research. Additionally, the library provides cardholders with opportunities to use materials

online. Cardholders can read the local newspaper’s headlines or turn the pages of a cooking magazine while using the library’s subscriptions, without ever leaving their home.

Skilton said during the past year the library saw its online visitors go from an average of 1,000 visits per month to more than 5,000 visits per month.

A portion of these visits was by local students, accessing databases for school, such as Pebble Go, which provides online books and audio books for students.

Questions for a librarian? These can be asked through the library’s website, or visit the website to review content, search for online classes and even discover how you can learn a new language online.

In addition to its tremendous collection of materials, the library staff works hard to bring creative and interesting classes and programming to its cardholders.

Each month visitors will find an array of programs such as family trivia night, a look back at historical events, and even the opportunity to learn new computer skills. And nearly all of the classes are available at no cost to the public.

While some programming has been moved to online platforms due to COVID-19, Skilton said the library has seen a positive response from the community with an increase in attendance for some library programs.

“We’re pretty excited to be able to reach people who may not have been able to come to programs in person,” Skilton said, adding how proud she is of her staff which moved quickly to pivot to online platforms. “They were able to adjust and continue to provide services with enthusiasm.”

The library has scanners and DVD recorders to create digital copies of old photos or home movies to help preserve family memories.

Each month library staff offers Take and Make projects, which are kits that cardholders can pick up to complete at home, providing a fun and creative outlet for all ages to enjoy. And the in-person classes range from improving computer skills to learning how to use a sewing machine for quilting.

FAMILY FUN ABOUNDS IN OSWEGO

fter spending much of 2020 sheltering in place, many are looking forward to having some fun in 2021.

And the Oswegoland Park District is one entity doing its part to help community members beat cabin fever.

“So many of us are just beginning to feel like we’re coming out of a lengthy hibernation,” Kristie Vest, special events supervisor for the park district, said. “The park district is determined to offer tons of options to entertain area families.”

Those looking to give their endorphins a boost can participate in a variety of races, runs and triathlons throughout the year, including the annual Spring Trail Run, PrairieFest 5K and One Mile Prairie Dog Jog, Gobbler Hobbler 10K and Mashed Potato Mile, and the Have Fun? You Won! Kids Triathlon.

The Oswego Country Market, hosted by the Oswegoland Park District, will return Sundays beginning June 6 and run through Sept. 26. Visitors can peruse the outdoor, open-air market for fresh produce, meats, eggs, artisan cheeses, specialty foods like baked goods and honey, and handmade items.

Care to take in a show? Or participate in one? Throughout the year, Oswegoland Park District’s Limelight Theatre Company offers theatrical experiences for participants ranging from kindergarten through high school, college, and beyond.

Productions are open to the public.

“There are a lot of positive takeaways from such a challenging time,” Vest said. “This community has shown so much support for one other. The Oswegoland Park District is excited to offer these opportunities to safely celebrate getting together with neighbors and friends in the coming year.”

The Fox River is also a popular amenity for the village. When sunny days and warmer weather are back on tap, outdoor enthusiasts can kayak or canoe down the river, or coast along it on bikes via the Fox River Trail.

The village is also the backdrop for a variety of events throughout the summer months, including festivals, Fourth of July Fireworks, and Movies in the Park.

Later in the year, PrairieFest, Oswego’s annual four-day community celebration, returns to town. Held throughout the village, with the main festival grounds located at PrairieFest Park, 91 Plank Road, the event will be held over Labor Day Weekend, from Friday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 6, with the theme “Happy Days Are Here Again.”

The village’s annual Oswego Christmas Walk, held in December and featuring a variety of festive holiday activities for the whole family, caps off the year.
