Oswego Village President Gail Johnson said she is attempting to organize a meeting with mayors and officials in Kendall County to discuss a serious push to extend Metra service into Kendall County along the BNSF Line. Among those officials she hopes to connect with are Plano Mayor Bob Hausler, Kendall County Board member Scott Gryder, Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski, Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley and Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson. “Our hope was just to have a frank conversation about how we move forward,” Johnson said. “My goal is to establish a task force and have each of the mayors decide who would serve on that from their village.” From there, Johnson said the task force would present their findings to Metra. “We need to put our collective heads together,” she said. Johnson said most of the city officials who will gather in the coming weeks say they are on board with putting a Metra stop somewhere in Kendall County even if it isn’t in their respective town. Hausler said he would like to see the rail service extended all the way to the city of Sandwich. He explained that the service could end at Sandwich, with stops in the cities and villages along the BSNF Line including Oswego, Yorkville, Montgomery and Plano. “I don’t think it’s com-

petitive, but the farther west that the termination point is, Metra can serve all the communities,” he said. “I think it would be beneficial to serve all the communities.” Hausler added that getting voters to join the RTA could be a tough sell. “It would have to be sold to the voters and if it would create economic development and be good for each community then that would be the selling points – not only the ridership but the economic development that it would create,” Hausler said. He added that he is confident that extending Metra service would be good for economic development. “It would bring people other than residents of the city to the downtown,” he said. “Most of the communities to our east that have a Metra station usually have some other type of development around it.” One issue the task force will have to tackle is how to pay for maintaining Metra service if commuter stations are built in Kendall County.
