YEA, district attempt to negotiate new contract KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Members of the Yorkville Education Association (YEA), the union for the Yorkville School District’s teachers, conducted informational picketing in Town Square Park after school Tuesday. Representatives of the YEA and the school district board have been attempting to negotiate a new contract for the teachers since last October. The teachers have been working without a contract since their previous three-year contract expired June 30. The two sides are scheduled to meet this Friday, Oct. 23, for another bargaining session. “We are looking forward to making possible movement at this Friday’s meeting to avoid further work action in order to settle a fair and equitable contract,” YEA President Shawn Collins said in a statement issued Tuesday.

Once the Yorkville School District results on the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) standardized tests arrive, the district will host information meetings for parents to help them understand their children’s scores. Members of the Board of Education Applied Learning and Technology Committee got a look at how those scores will be presented Monday. Director of Teaching and Learning Kelley Gallt presented information that shows each student’s results will list whether they exceeded expectations in a subject, met expectations, approached expectations, partially met expectations or did not meet academic expectations. Students took the PARCC tests last spring at the time they previously would have taken the Illinois Standards Achievement Tests (ISAT) or Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE). The PARCC test is administered online for most students, a change from earlier statewide tests.

The student’s overall score will be shown on a range from 650 to 850 with scores from 650 to 700 “not meeting expectations,” 700 to 725 “partially meeting expectations,” 725 to 750 “approaching expectations,” 750 to 803 “meeting expectations” and 803 to 850 “exceeding expectations.” Board member Dr. Lynn Burks questioned the labels on the ranges. “I see where they’re going, but you either meet expectations or you don’t meet expectations,” Burks said. Each student’s report will also show how they performed in four different areas in the subject. For example, the algebra report will show how the student did in expressing mathematical
