nimals, music, food and a variety of interactive nature-related activities were featured at the Forest Foundation of Kendall County’s annual Fall Fest Saturday at Hoover Forest Preserve in Yorkville. In addition to educational presentations, the free festival included a petting zoo for children, a Frisbee Dog demonstration, scavenger hunt and craft building stations.

Representatives of the Yorkville School District Board of Education and the Yorkville Education Association, the district’s teachers union, were scheduled to meet again this week to try to come to an agreement on a new contract for the district’s teachers. The teachers have been working without a contract since their previous three-year contract expired June 30. Dean Romano, assistant superintendent for finance and operations, said the two sides had scheduled a six-hour negotiation session for yesterday, Wednesday. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service assigned a mediator help with the negotiations after both sides filed a joint request last month. The mediator last met with district administrators and the YEA for the fourth time Oct. 5. Representatives of the YEA and district administrators, representing the Board of Education, met previously 27 times over the past year in an effort to negotiate a new contract. In a press release issued by the school district Tuesday, officials outlined what they considered to be the outstanding issues in the ongoing talks. In the press release, the district charges the YEA has made no movement on the issue of teacher salaries since Aug. 4. It adds, “There is still a significant difference in the positions of the board and the association.” In addition, “the board proposal ties a part of teacher compensation to overall increased performance measures designed to foster high levels of engagement,” the press release states. Also according to the press release, the board has made a request to reduce current six percent raises that eligible teachers receive for the last four years of their employment.
