Show of solidarity by Yorkville teachers Nearly 200 pack board meeting as talks with mediator continue By KATHY FARREN news@kendallcountynow.com Close to 200 Yorkville School District teachers packed the Board of Education meeting Monday night, applauding long and hard after their president spoke. Most of the teachers – who are still working without a contract – wore white shirts as they filled the Yorkville High School
Library. The teachers’ three-year contract approved in May 2012 expired June 30. In early September, the board and the Yorkville Education Association (YEA) representing teachers jointly filed a request with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service asking for a mediator. A mediator was assigned and met with both sides for eight
hours Friday. Another session was scheduled for Wednesday. Representatives of the YEA and district administrators, representing the Board of Education, met previously 27 times over the past year. In his statement to the board Monday night, YEA president Shawn Collins said he spoke, “not because I am angry or frustrated or bitter about the current status of our contract, for it is an issue that will be resolved in a matter of time.” Collins went on to say that Yorkville teachers go “above and beyond on a daily basis” to
support students outside of their normal school day. “But valued, it seems we are not,” he said, continuing, “When we stand together to show you how valuable we are, you begin to push back.” He referred to the board’s action at the Sept. 14 meeting when they approved the hiring of six lunchroom supervisors at Yorkville High School and Yorkville High School Academy to perform duties previously done by teachers. At Monday’s meeting, the board approved hiring an additional four lunchroom supervisors to work at Yorkville Middle
School. Since the school year began, teachers have been “working to the contract,” that is working only the hours and duties specified in the contract. Following the meeting, board President Dave Dockstader and Collins both said they were optimistic that settlement can be reached on a new contract. Dockstader said his one concern was that the federal mediator would not be available if Congress doesn’t approve a funding resolution by Wednesday night, and there is a federal government shutdown.
