Yorkville, Morris move to temper rivalry Students, school officials host spirit summit to ease animosity By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Bears and Packers; Cubs and Sox; Yorkville and Morris. As any sports fan knows, rivalries can be good for competition in sports, but officials from Morris High School and Yorkville
High School are now pushing to bridge the divide between the two schools. Yorkville High School Principal David Travis said students from the two schools held a spirit summit in early December in an effort to limit the animosity that has developed from the rivalry.
Attending the summit were athletes, coaches, officials and members of Morris and Yorkville spirit squads. Travis said about 20 students from each high school attended and much progress was made. Travis said the summit came about after Morris Principal Kelly Hussey reached out to him to talk about the history of the rivalry. “We really started off with the good, the bad and the ugly of rivalries and we talked about not just our rivalry as a school but other
rivalries that they may be familiar with,” Travis said. “How do you take the good of rivalry and really bring out the best in both schools?” Hussey said each school’s students learned they had a lot more in common with their rivals than they initially thought. “Aside from our schools, our colors, our mascots and all of that, we find that as people, we’re more alike than we are different,” he said. “We hope this is a good first step in creating a positive envi-
ronment.” From there the students came up with five commitments they made towards each other. “One was to practice the golden rule and to act towards fans as we would like to be treated,” Travis said. The groups also brainstormed and each came up with different guidelines for fans at sporting events. Main themes were then turned into rules to follow.
