Motor fuel taxes approved for road work

City council sets aside $300,000 for improvements planned in 2016 By DAN WAITT dwaitt@shawmedia.com Street construction might not be high on the priority list of topics on a 5-degree January night, but the Yorkville City Council on Tuesday took a major step toward

paving the way for its planned spring and summer road work. The council unanimously as part of its consent agenda approved a resolution calling for the use of some $300,000 in Motor Fuel Tax funds toward the city’s Roads to Better Roads Program.

Since MFT funds are being utilized to fund a portion of the project, IDOT requires a resolution to appropriate the funds. City officials are eyeing March 7 as the target date for bid letting on the work and plan to submit the complete set of construction documents now that the council has approved the MFT resolution. Street construction work planned for 2016 as part of the program includes streets mostly on the

north side of the Fox River. Several projects completed last year were on the south side of the river. Road to Better Roads portions scheduled include: • Faxon between High Ridge and western city limits • John Street between Kendall campus and Independence Boulevard • Independence Street and Court • Hillcrest Street

• Sunset Avenue • Appletree Court • West Street between Somonauk and Center • Church Street between Somonauk and River • Freemont between Elm and southern terminus • Boombah Boulevard between Route 47 and Caledonia subdivision

Yorkville High School students may be able to get in one more class each day by taking a course during a proposed “early bird” period starting at 6:30 a.m. Principal David Travis presented a proposal for this schedule to the Board of Education’s Applied Learning and Technology Committee meeting Monday. If the board approves the proposal, students would be able to take up to eight classes each semester beginning next year. Courses Travis suggested for that early bird time were freshmen physical education and health at the Yorkville High School Academy, and applied personal fitness, driver education, sophomore physical education, consumer management, and American government at the high school. The early class time would run from 6:30 a.m. to 7:17 a.m., allowing an eight minute passing
