BHS hosts huge Career Day event About 100 professionals spoke with students at Batavia High School on Thursday morning as part of the school’s Career Day. “It was fantastic; it was a huge undertaking,” said Principal JoAnne Smith.

“The kids were so excited and talked about it afterward. ... Everything went so well.”

I participated in the event along with a pilot, air traffic controller, scientist, lawyer, military representatives, cosmetologist, mechanical engineer and dozens of other professionals. It was the biggest career day that I had ever been a part of, and I thought BHS did a great job of organizing the event.

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey wrote in an email after the event that they were receiving a lot of positive feedback from BHS staff, students and speakers, noting that hosting Career Day was “an all-building effort, down to teachers being in the classroom during each session.”

“We are hoping that the students were able to engage in some self-reflection regarding their own personal ‘soft skills’ and drive and how they relate to the careers they heard [about],” the coordinators wrote. “We did overhear some students say that their session was a downer;

but if that’s the reality of the current career outlook, then they came away with a realistic vision.”

The 50 Men Who Cook tasting event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Lincoln Inn Banquets, 1345 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia.

Suicide Prevention Services is a nonprofit organization that doesn’t receive any state or federal dollars. SPS is dedicated to reducing and eliminating suicide and suicide attempts through education, advocacy and collaboration.

Hunt for Easter eggs at annual Batavia event BATAVIA – The Batavia Park District’s annual Easter Egg Hunt is set for April 12 at West Main Community Park, 40W101 W. Main St., Batavia.

Batavia show choirs plan final performance BATAVIA – The Batavia High School show choirs’ final performance will be at 7 p.m.

Planners support new mall proposal

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Charlestowne Mall redevelopment project this week continued to move through the city’s approval process.

The Plan Commission on Tuesday recommended for approval the project’s overall site plan, preliminary engineering plan and the final plat of subdivision, said Russell Colby, the city’s planning division manager.

The current site plan includes a few changes from the initial plan, including the omission of buildings proposed for the mall’s outlot areas. The project’s developers plan to submit updated proposals for outlot buildings at an unspecified date.

The latest plan also includes the removal of the entry drive from the mall’s southwest entrance. The commission was concerned about losing the entry drive because it would have included a pedestrian walkway to the mall.

The developers instead will have a walkway run along the ring road from the west over to the mall’s Von Maur

anchor building on the south side of the mall, Colby said.

The Krausz Companies Inc. in California purchased the mall property for more than $9.5 million in November. The company plans to rename the mall The Quad St. Charles and recreate its appearance by late 2015 to a neighborhood feeling and include patio dining outside.

Since the developers continue to talk with possible tenants and refine their plans for the mall, construction likely won’t begin until this July instead of April or May, said Jay Krigsman, executive vice president of The Krausz Companies.

“We still believe we are on schedule for a holiday 2015 grand opening,” Krigsman said. “Part of the work we are doing [requires] a lot of site grading.”

The two plans and final plat reviewed by the Plan Commission will next go before the city’s Planning and Development committee on April 14. The city expects to review the mall’s early landscape, architectural and signage plans in late June or early July, Colby said.

Volunteers sought to finish boardwalk

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The boardwalk at the Batavia Riverwalk will take on a new look this year.

The Batavia Parks Foundation looks to complete the Batavia Riverwalk Boardwalk project this year after volunteers completed demolition and plank installation last year.

“We are looking to get geared up again,” Batavia

Parks Foundation volunteer Britta McKenna said. “We are looking to get done by the fall.”

Volunteers will work on completing the railings, overlook, electric and site amenities. The boardwalk was built by volunteers in the 1990s as part of the Batavia Riverwalk and was in need of replacement.

The foundation is seeking volunteer groups of six to 12 adults and skilled tradespeople

Police: Man asked girl to get in his car

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Police continue to investigate a report of a female juvenile being approached by a man in a vehicle Thursday afternoon in the area of Lundburg and Western avenues.

“We are still looking for better leads,” Batavia Police Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said Friday afternoon.

The incident happened at about 2:57 p.m. Thursday, police said.

The victim told police the man offered her money to get into his vehicle.

The victim was able to get away and call police. The man was described as white, approximately 40 to 50 years old, with a tan complexion, short

black hair and a “stubble” beard.

The vehicle driven by the man was described by the victim as being tan, fourdoor, and possibly a Mercury Grand Marquis.

“We’ve had some calls from the public about seeing a vehicle similar to that description in the general area,” Mazza said.

Since the incident, the police department has beefed up its patrols around Batavia schools and will continue to do so next week, Mazza said.

Those with information about the incident, the man or the vehicle are urged to call the Batavia Police Department at 630-454-2500.

“Any assistance from the public would be greatly appreciated,” Mazza said.

ST. CHARLES – Virginia L. Marck, longtime resident of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the age of 93.

She was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated from Drake University with a degree in psychology. While

working for the FBI in Washington, D.C., during World War II, she met and married Ray C. Marck, who was at the Naval Academy post-grad school. In the summer of 2013, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Virginia was an avid reader who served 11 years on the St. Charles Public Library Board. She also loved flowers and was employed by Robbins Flowers Inc. for many years.

Virginia and Ray were members of Baker Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. In spring of 2013, the couple moved to The Holmstad in Batavia.

Virginia is survived by her loving husband, Ray; her beloved sister, Janet Masimore of Peoria; by her children, Rebecca Ann (David Hathaway) and John Andrew (Pamela); as well as two grandsons, Stephen and David.

Search finds too much of a good thing I’m sure we can all relate to the expression, “too much of a good thing.”

With St. Patrick’s Day still in recent memory, some of us may regret consuming too much corned beef and cabbage. Or green beer, as the case may be.

The excesses of Fat Tuesday aren’t too far in the past either. Can you say paczki?

(For the record, I can, but only because I once worked for a bakery magazine.)

Today though, I find myself looking at a pile of things, none of which are edible and any one of which might be considered good, by itself. But together, to my eye anyway, they definitely look like too much.

I’m talking oothecae.

Specifically the egg cases of Tenodera sinensis, the Chinese praying mantis.

Last week Lisa O’Brien, our school program coordinator, and I headed out on a mission. Our aim was to find “a few” Chinese mantid cases, which we would then dis-

Ginsberg was the 2014 Conference, Sectional and State all-around champion. She broke the 2006 all-around school record with 38.05, as well as the beam and floor school records, both with a 9.7.

Frazier had 22 points and 15 rebounds in the Regional Championship game against Willowbrook. In the Sectional Semifinal game against Downers Grove North, she had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and she had the game-winning bucket with a three-point play.

Kumerow is a leader on the team. He set a new school record in the high jump on Saturday, February 22. Kumerow is 6’2” and won the triple jump at the St. Charles North early bird meet.

Pryor is Central’s leading scorer at 14.4 points per game. She is also second at the school in rebounds.

Pryor was named 2nd team All-State for class 3A A.P, 3rd team AllState for class 3A-4A, and she was named both All-Conference and All-Area.

Scull is a junior distance runner for the Girls STCE Cross Country and Track Team. She placed 18th at the IHSA Cross Country Finals in the fall and has already posted a state qualifying time in the 1600 meter race this spring.

Carlson averaged 17.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the month of February. He also shot 80 percent from the free throw line, while leading the Knights to a 6-3 record for the month and the NBXII Conference Championship.

easy to find Chinese mantid eggs. We had no idea, though, how quickly our quest would come to fruition.

Bam! Five minutes down the trail, we spotted our first specimen. It was a sizable creation, about the shape and color of a roasted marshmallow, affixed to a goldenrod stem that was leaning toward the path.

“Aha!” I exclaimed, and the race was on. Not that Lisa and I are competitive or anything, but from that moment forward we focused not only on finding egg cases, but on who could find the most, the fastest.

At the outset we’d hoped to find three or maybe four capsules, enough to allow each class the opportunity to observe the miracle of life – 200 or so perfectly formed baby mantids emerging from their natal sac. But 20 minutes into our adventure, we’d filled our collecting canister, coat pockets and hands, and were seeing still more cases on the stems and twigs we passed.

Just that quickly, Lisa and I went from being giddy over our success to just ever-so-slightly disturbed about the excesses we’d found.

Chinese mantids were introduced in the United States in the 1890s, as a biological alternative to insecticides.

Gifted with raptorial forelimbs that feature sharp, piercing spines, these insects are extremely efficient at capturing and consuming all sorts of invertebrate prey.

On the surface this may seem like a pretty good deal – fewer chemicals, more dead bugs; it’s a win-win, right?

The disturbing part comes when you take a look at what makes up the mantids’ menu.

While it’s true they prey upon the insects we have in abundance, like grasshoppers and potato beetles, they’ll also eat their share of pollinators like honeybees – creatures we have far too few of these days.

What I’m also wondering is, what effect are Chinese mantids having on our native Argiope spiders? Those handsome black-and-yellow arachnids, once prevalent in our fields and prairies, seem ever more difficult to find these days. While I’ve never witnessed a mantid-vs.-spider, Alien-vs.-Terminator-type battle, it could be that the mantids’ presence has thrown local food webs out of whack, and given an edge to the nonnative kids on the block.

Lisa and I visited one park, one day – nowhere near the sort of all-encompassing effort it would take to conduct a true survey of Tenodera sinensis in St. Charles. But if what we found holds true for other natural areas too, we may this summer find ourselves teeming with Tenodera.

Are they, perhaps, too much of a good thing?

Bill Lenert was greeting supporters in the doorway of Orchards Restaurant at Orchard Valley Golf Course in Aurora when I arrived Tuesday evening as election results began pouring in.

7:55 p.m. – Bill Lenert ills in some friends and supporters on the voting numbers for the Prestbury area of Sugar Grove. So far, Lenert is ahead of Kane County Board District 5 incumbent Melisa Taylor, 56 percent to 44 percent.

8:07 p.m. – Lenert works the room of the restaurant, as he gives updates on the Aurora-area polling numbers.

8:15 p.m. – Lenert and his family huddle around a laptop computer to get a closer look at the election results.

8:29 p.m. – Kane County unoficial vote totals so far are 407-379 in favor of Lenert.

8:31 p.m. – “It’s very close right now. VERY close,” says Bill Lenert’s son, Mike.

8:34 p.m. – Bill Lenert, while talking to a friend, says he’s made more than 600 phone calls to registered voters in the last nine days.

9:16 p.m. – Lenert leads by 50 votes in Kane County and 34 votes in Aurora, according to unoficial results.

9:35 p.m. – Lenert acknowledges that waiting for polling results is more difficult than walking door-to-door all those weekends the last few months campaigning.

9:58 p.m. – The votes are all in, and Lenert has unseated Taylor by 264 votes, according to unoficial results. Lenert addresses the room to thunderous applause as he thanks his family and supporters.

7:41 p.m. – After a few phone calls, Taylor finally has the vote totals for five precincts in her hand. She scrolls the tape under the light of her car’s map light. So far, one precinct was tied, one had Taylor in the lead and one had challenger Bill Lenert in the lead.

7:45 p.m. – The second set of numbers are in Taylor’s hand. “You’re gonna do it; I told you,” Jordan said.

7:48 p.m. – One of the precincts in Sugar Grove had one vote total. That vote went to Taylor.

9:24 p.m. – I get a text from Taylor saying she is back out collecting signs.

Vets, volunteers upset over animal ruling Judge: Owner can take charge of them again

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The yearling’s hip bones jutted out. Every vertebra of its spine was defined, and every rib could be counted.

And before its hooves were trimmed by a farrier, they were so long, they pointed upward, the farrier said. Running her hand over the animal’s rump, back and side, veterinarian Nicole Wessel said this was evidence the year-old horse had been starved. The yearling’s hair was shaved to show the detail of its starvation.

“You should not be able to see the spine or count the ribs,” Wessel said. “This is a 1-year-old baby that was near death. I saved his life by giving him [intravenous] fluids. Without that, he would have died.”

Another yearling was not so lucky, Wessel said, as it died despite her efforts to save its life. The yearlings are among 93 animals that were impounded from a petting zoo earlier this month. Their owner, Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin, was charged with cruelty and a violation of an animal owner’s duty to provide food and care, both misdemeanors that are

Fiebelkorn’s attorney, Jamie Wombacher, did not return a message seeking comment.

Wessel is one of several vets and volunteers caring for the rescued animals at one of two locations in Maple Park. They and others in the local equine community said they are outraged at a judge’s decision to return more than two dozen horses, donkeys and ponies and two goats to Fiebelkorn.

hearing Thursday in Kane County Branch Court.

Fiebelkorn voluntarily gave up the rabbits, poultry and all but two goats, but fought to get the others returned.

“I’ve worked around horses since I was 13 years old,” Jensen said. “My interest here is to take care of the animals.”

Sarah Jane Provenzano of Sycamore, also a volunteer, said the hair on the horses’ undersides was matted and clotted with burrs and feces.

“And they had diarrhea and worms,” Provenzano said. “ ...

They were walking on their toes because their hooves were so overgrown.”

Veterinarian Susan Brown was helping attend to the impounded animals. Brown testified in the second day of the forfeiture hearing that the animals she examined were suffering from chronic starvation.

“The animals were not in any way healthy,” Brown said.

“I strongly disagree with the judge’s decision.”

The animals’ advocates are focusing on a hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday to determine whether Fiebelkorn should have to post security to pay for the care and feeding of the animals

If the judge requires Fiebelkorn to do so, and she does not post the money in five days, the animals would be forfeited. Volunteers are hoping the security requirement will be too high and the remaining animals would not be returned to Fiebelkorn.

In a court hearing last week, Flood did not rule on a request by Kane County prosecutors to require Fiebelkorn to post $36,786 in security to cover 30 days of care for the 93 animals, about $1,200 per day.

In April, a hearing is scheduled on a request by Wombacher to stop county employees from speaking about the case outside of the courtroom.

In court papers, Wombacher said comments from 36 news stories circulated among 10 news outlets about her client

could jeopardize Fiebelkorn’s right to a fair trial.

Though she has not yet ruled on the gag order request, prosecutors and Kane County Animal Control Administrator Robert Sauceda have not since commented outside of court and referred all questions to a public information officer.

Celebrating a successful season at Mooseheart

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE EDITORIAL BOARD The Mooseheart boys basketball team seized an opportunity and won an IHSA Class 1A state championship last week, allowing the community a chance to celebrate an outstanding two seasons of high-level hoops.

The Ramblers enjoyed the run with the help of three students from South Sudan – Akim Nyang, Makur Puou and Mangisto Deng. The team had to endure debates about the players’ eligibility – to the point that the IHSA revisited its transfer bylaws.

But they were allowed to play, and they delivered an experience worth savoring. It was the first state championship in school history, a feat achieved with players that stood tall – Nyang is 7-foot-1, Puou stands 6-10, and Deng is 6-7. The Ramblers finished with a superlative 29-3 record, and none of their defeats came against a team competing in Class 1A, the smallest of the four IHSA classes. They did it with style, using slick passes, slam dunks and punishing blocks. It was difficult, if not impossible, for many small-school teams to match up with such a tall, talented squad.

That’s something that’s never before been experienced at Mooseheart, a school that was established in 1913.

A season like this is rare. The way it came to happen – with such a talented group of transfer students coming together – might never happen again.

These are memories worth treasuring.

SCMTT stars at mock trial state championships

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE EDITORIAL BOARD Unlike those who participate in athletics, students who take part in academic-based competitions don’t often get to experience the thrill of performing in front of hundreds, or even thousands, of people cheering in support of their endeavors.

That doesn’t make the feats less significant. The St. Charles Mock Trial Team won its first title in school history earlier this month, in an event at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign.

These are teens using real-world skills, with team members trying both sides of a hypothetical case. Such a com-

petition takes hours of preparation, with participants working with attorney Patrick Crimmins of the Brady and Jensen law firm.

The students’ success is worth applauding, and we wish them success in May as they represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship.

others, denying voting rights, denying equal rights to gays, denying women the freedom to choose, denying access to health care insurance, and blaming the poor for their poverty and the unemployed for their unemployment is a very Christian thing to do and that this kind of behavior is consistent with “family values”?

Maybe shameful and sinful would be a more fitting description? Why don’t they see their own hypocri-

sy? Do they really think that Jesus would approve?

If any of them read the Bible, they must have skipped Matthew 7:15.

Then President Obama mentioned that if an individual could not afford health care coverage, then they can discontinue cellphone or cable TV service. Now Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is proposing a 3 percent income tax surcharge on people making more than $1 million on taxable income.

His theory is that the money

will go to education. The only education Madigan knows about is paying for teachers’ underfunded pensions. Despite these statements by the Democrats, they still get re-elected by the people of Illinois and the nation.

Abolish home rule At the City Council meeting in Batavia on March 17, Bill McGrath said home rule allows us to do anything we want to do that is not specifically prohibited by law. So, of course, the Batavia City Council voted to raise our sales tax, raise our electric rates. When Mr. Olmstead got up and said he would like to see the city council cut city expenses by 6 percent, so that the citizens weren’t on the hook for the whole makeup of the mistakes that the city and city employees have made, it was met with no comment.

It’s time to abolish home rule.

When Batavia got us into this electrical debacle, the city was not home rule. Now that they are home rule, they are taking advantage of it, adding fees and all kinds of other charges.

It’s time to abolish home rule.

We are looking for volunteers to help us get signatures on petitions to put it on the ballot in November. When you abuse power, you shouldn’t have it.

Mooseheart junior Mason Miller, who is part of the school’s drum line and band, also was part of Friday’s celebration. He was cheering for the basketball team as it made its way through the state tournament.

“It makes you feel proud,” Miller said. “We are all a family here. We all do things to help each other out.”

Tri-Cities housing market stagnates in February Prices rose, but fewer homes sold

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com There was little growth in Tri-Cities housing market sales in February compared to the same time last year, according to the latest data released by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

There were 28 St. Charles detached single-family homes sold traditionally in February, just one more than the number sold in February 2013, according to the organization’s data.

The number of traditional homes under contract to be sold decreased in St. Charles from 48 in February 2013 to

29 one year later, the data showed. Batavia also posted a decrease from 21 to 15 homes under contract during the same period. The number of closed sales for detached Batavia homes slipped from 11 in February 2013 to nine this year.

Geneva had a slight increase in traditional home sales under contract but a decrease in closed sales. There were 26 detached single-family homes under contract in February, up one sale from February 2013, according to the data. Closed sales dropped from 16 homes in 2013 to 9 one year later.

The number of closed February short sales has not changed dramatically in recent years.

In February 2012, there were seven short sales for all

three cities. That number decreased to six 12 months later and went back up to eight in February 2014.

There was some modest growth in the Tri-Cities for traditional median sale prices for detached homes. St. Charles prices were up this year to $314,000 from $290,000 last year.

Geneva’s median sales prices for the same kind of homes also was up to $335,000 from $322,500, the data said.

Batavia’s median home sale prices posted the smallest increase to $321,000 from $310,000.

Prices of single-family, detached homes in the suburbs overall increased 11.6 percent in February 2014 compared with the same period a year ago, according to the organization’s statistics.

T

he similarities between spring 2011 and spring 2014 are difficult to escape for the St. Charles North softball program.

As in 2011, North returns almost its entire team intact.

Like 2011, North is loaded with veteran, college-bound standouts. And as in 2011, North is driven by the sting of an upset loss in regionals the year before.

One major difference looms between this spring and 2011, when North went on to finish second in the state in Class 4A. Unlike that season, this year’s North Stars will have to reckon with a legitimate state championship contender within their own city limits.

St. Charles East was the 4A state runner-up in 2013, and, like the North Stars, the Saints are regarded among the state’s elite teams entering this season. Between East and North, 10 players who were recognized as part of the Kane County Chronicle’s 2013 all-area softball team return.

“The games against each other will be as intense as ever,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “I think that me personally, I was proud of what [East did last year] … I was proud with being a graduate of that school. I’m just proud of St. Charles as a community when we have success at the state level.

“Having both teams being as strong as they are is a tribute to the travel teams in the area, the coaches at the youth level that get kids when they’re young and teach them the game and coaches through high school in the schools and on the travel teams. I just [am proud] of the quality of teaching of the game that goes on in this area.”

As for his North Stars, Poulin acknowledged a degree of déjà vu linking this season to 2011.

team but there are some parallels there, I think,” Poulin said. “This team is tired of me always bringing up the 2011 team, and then I just keep telling them they need to do something about it and make me talk about this team when it’s all said and done.”

Only senior pitcher Sabrina Rabin – the Chronicle’s reigning Softball Player of the Year – played on North’s 2011 team, which lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to Moline in the state championship game.

Burlington Central While Bekah Harnish and Brooke Gaylord return as .500-plus hitters, coach Wade Maisto has plenty of quality depth in the lineup, including sophomore Emily Kisch, outfielder Courtni Neubauer and sophomore Becca Gerke, who will transition from outfield to the infield. Shortstop Tori Harvey – who missed much of last season with a knee injury – could be an important piece for a Rockets team that will play a dynamite nonconference schedule.

Cheatham and sophomore Kelly Rinker are both being evaluated at shortstop, with the other likely to slide to second base.

More competition in the outfield arrives with lefty, slap-hitter newcomers Jordyn Wolfe and Abi Ginther, but it’ll predominantly be the same, talented bunch that rolled last year, led by do-it-all senior Sabrina Rabin, who will hope to end her high school career where it began as a freshman – at the state finals in East Peoria.

St. Francis The presence of senior pitcher Maggie Remus should go a long way, but the Spartans graduated several big bats from last year’s powerhouse team. Coach Ralph Remus is counting on junior first baseman Ali Dietrich, catcher Fiona Summers, third baseman Emma Davis and right fielder Carley Pasquale to help the Spartans reload.

2000 to ’08 when each of the high schools had their own club teams. Gabrielsen, who coached at his alma mater, York, in recent years before taking a year off, agreed to join the Hawks, who are based out of Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“It took a lot for me to decide to do it but there’s still something inside of me that wants to coach and it worked out where I could do it here at the Fox Valley Ice Arena, back out this way,” Gabrielsen said. “All that together is what kind of brought me back. I’m passionate to coach the kids from out here and try to build the program back up.”

Gabrielsen said there is plenty of hockey talent and interest around the Tri-Cities.

Gabrielsen said preliminary feedback regarding the Hawks’ desire to return to fielding varsity and JV teams is encouraging.

“I think there is a lot of interest getting generated through kids and a lot off talk with kids to other kids playing hockey in this area,” Gabrielsen said. “We’ve heard from a lot of players interested in coming out and playing to get back to two full teams and compete. … It’s going to take a lot of work. Hopefully we can do it in

a short period of time.”

In addition to grooming local players, Gabrielsen said he looks forward to working with Dan and Chris Bednarek, both of whom played for Gabrielsen at St. Charles East and will stay on as coaches in the Hawks’ program. Mark Sokniewicz and Pete Garvey also will join the program as coaches.

The Hawks plan to compete in a pair of tournaments this spring before turning their attention to the fall season. The Hawks are conducting spring tryouts from 3:50 to 4:50 p.m.

Tuesday and from 5:40 to 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Fox Valley Ice Arena.

The 2003 Rockets finished 11-1 and will become the first football team to be inducted into Central’s hall of fame.

The Rockets advanced to the IHSA Class 4A quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by Driscoll.

“In my 29 years of coaching that was best team I have ever been associated with,” former Central coach Dave Smith, the current coach at Dixon, said in a news release. “They were excellent in so many different phases of the game. It was like being in heaven coaching those guys.”

North beat East head-tohead both times last year en route to winning the Upstate Eight Conference River title but the North Stars fell to South Elgin in a regional final while East raised its game in the postseason.

Horan praised the UEC as a softball powerhouse, saying the Saints’ road to conference and postseason success will be filled with major challenges.

“That’s definitely true of the East-North game but if you look at the top four in the state for probably the last five years, it’s been somebody from our conference, so to be the best you’ve got to play the best, and our schedule is filled with great teams,” Horan said.

Whether the greatest of those challengers is only a few miles crosstown remains to be seen.

The Fox Valley Hawks high school hockey club is looking for a revival, and Phil Gabrielsen’s presence could be a big part of making it happen.

The Hawks – a high school hockey co-op that includes Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East, St. Charles North and Kaneland high schools – lost its varsity status last winter, fielding only a JV level team because of insufficient depth and experience.

That development didn’t sit well with players’ families and the club’s board, and plans to rejuvenate the program included reaching out to veteran hockey coach Phil Gabrielsen, a Geneva resident.

Girls league meet is today

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – St. Charles North senior Erik Miller missed school Thursday with bronchitis.

On Friday, he won the Upstate Eight Conference boys indoor track title in the high jump and took fourth in the long jump.

This resilience thing is nothing new for Miller, an Illinois State recruit who earlier this month set the York Invitational high jump record just days after North’s basketball season ended.

“Basically just confidence. Knowing that I’ve done it before,” Miller said.

“You’ve got to have a little edge to yourself. Like, don’t be cocky, but you’ve got to be pretty confident, you know.”

That’s a credo that’s starting to sink in for track teams statewide, as indoor conference meets signify the dawn of outdoor season.

Meet host Batavia feels as excited as anyone. The Bulldogs totaled 86.5 points to finish third in Friday’s 14-team event, trailing only champion Neuqua Valley (116) and runner-up Waubonsie Valley (99).

The girls conference meet will be held at Batavia today.

“Everybody comes here because it’s, I think, one of the best facilities in the nation as far as high school goes. And we’re here to defend it,” Bulldogs distance standout Ryan Wieties said.

“This is our home, and we’re not going to let anybody just take over it sitting down.”

Fellow Bulldogs junior Chris Orlow, the eventual third-place finisher, established the pace for the first three-quarters of a mile before Wieties harnessed his kick to grab the lead.

“Our goal was have [Orlow] lead it and then I come in and we work it together, and the last lap is every man for himself,” Wieties said.

“Our goal was to get points, and that’s what we did.”

North produced two event champions, with Miller’s winning high jump standard of 6 feet, 3 inches preceding Kaleb Kirby’s 14-0 effort in the pole vault.

Kirby, who cleared a personal-best 14-9 at York, admitted it wasn’t his best night, but was just as quick to assert his confidence in his ability. He’s a returning state qualifier and has visions of Eastern Illinois’ famed blue track yet again.

“I feel like indoors is just a lot of practice,” Kirby

said. “The big heights are outside, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Another returning state qualifier, Geneva’s Tim Roels, took the 200 in 22.93 to cap a busy night. After nearly false-starting in the 55, he rebounded to win his 400 heat – placing fifth overall – and put it all together in his final event.

Progression is all you can ask at this point of the season. The Vikings’ Jason D’Amico showed plenty of his own, taking second in the shot put (48 feet-1) in his first week back with the team after basketball season.

“Every meet, you want to do well. I mean, you compete, and when you compete, you want to do well,” Roels said. “It’s kind of like a building ground for outdoors. You really want to get a good building block right now, because in the outdoor season, you’ll be even better.”

For a handful of athletes, the meet also offered a final tune-up for next weekend’s Illinois Prep Top Times event, the unofficial indoor state championship held at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center in Bloomington.

After Illinois Prep Top Times, a brief break awaits before the transition into the outdoor season – ideally to regular spells of the kind of mild, sunny weather that warmed the area for parts of Friday afternoon.

St. Charles East athletes are clamoring more than most. The Saints’ outdoor track is flooded as the Chicago area region thaws out from the third-snowiest winter in history.

“We’re all itching to get outside, trust me,” said East’s Kyle Decker, who took second in the 55 hurdles in 8.1 seconds. “It seems like every day it’s been warm, we’ve had to do something inside and it’s just really hard. I want the

Did it swell up on you or anything?

It stung, I’m not going to lie to you, but I just kept going. Part of it, the drill was very fast-paced. The idea is you and your partner have to both get touches on every ball. There wasn’t time to worry about that.

Is it kind of a deal where with every volleyball player, pretty much at some point that’s going to happen if you play long enough?

Oh yeah. The higher level you get, the faster balls are coming at you. You have to expect one of them is going

to hit you in the face.

How much momentum do you guys feel in the program based on how last year went?

I feel like we’re using that to definitely build our momentum going into this season with how successful we were last year and wanting to emulate the success that those guys had. Definitely coach Weimer, every time, every parent meeting or whatever we recruit people for boys volleyball, [he says] we won third in state last year, so he’s really excited about that and everyone on the team, we all rallied around that and are glad we got that far.

What got you into boys volleyball?

In seventh grade, my English teacher (at Haines) asked me and a couple of other guys if she started a before-school boys volleyball club where we just got together and played a little bit, if we wanted to do that. I enjoyed playing gym volleyball but never played

Who are a couple guys that are impressing you this preseason?

Nic Cook, definitely. Jack Bujko is really getting up, and he’s been a great leader on the team, a returning varsity player. He can really hit the ball really hard. Nic Cook, him too, his leadership and his passion on the team is so evident in every practice we’ve had. He really, really cares about the team, and I really enjoy that. …

He’s an incredible setter. He can really do it all.

You touched on coach Weimer’s enthusiasm. Is that pretty infectious with the players?

Yeah. It’s really easy to play with a coach who is so passionate about the sport, and every day in practice he’s enthused and he’s ready to go. It’s not an option to be not hustling or not working hard. It’s so infectious, his love for the game. He makes you want to try hard.

Geneva girls soccer sharp in first match KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – Geneva girls soccer coach Megan Owens figured her team might be equipped to start the season fast considering the Vikings have 11 seniors this season.

That turned out to be the case Friday as Geneva shut out Wheaton Academy, 2-0, in the Vikings’ season opener.

“We’ve never had this many seniors in the program,” Owens said. “We have 11 seniors.

That’s huge. Last year we had three. So it’s nice, we’ve got a lot of leadership and a lot of experience. Hopefully that will help us in some close games.”

Friday’s match was close until the final minute, when Allie Mikos scored off a counter-attack to give the Vikings their 2-0 margin. Mary Landry converted a header off a Courtney Lardas cross in the first half.

Owens considered the game a “good, solid start to the season,” and a boost to the team’s conditioning efforts.

You’re used to coming off last season, when we could go 120 minutes and be alright, but we looked good.”

Wheaton Academy falls to 1-1-1. The match was originally scheduled for next Monday at Wheaton Academy but the date and venue were changed as the teams played on the Vikings’ turf Burgess Field.

The Vikings’ scheduled match at East Aurora next Tuesday also has been moved to Geneva so it can be played on turf.

Geneva originally planned to open its season at DeKalb this Thursday but that match was postponed.

BASEBALL Batavia to play Kaneland: The Batavia baseball team will face Kaneland on March 31 at Wheaton College’s Pfund Field, Bulldogs coach Matt Holm announced. Batavia originally was scheduled to face Sycamore that day.

And although Hawks coach Joel Quenneville kept the rookie out of the lineup Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes, chances are good that you’ll see No. 86 soon. The playmaking center was the Hawks’ first-round pick (No. 18 overall) in the 2012 NHL entry draft, and he shined on his Finnish team this season before joining the Hawks.

The Hawks long had considered calling up Teravainen toward the end of the season, but a leg injury to Patrick Kane accelerated the move.

Kane will miss the rest of the regular season but will return for the playoffs, general manager Stan Bowman said.

Now, as for how to pronounce Teuvo’s first name … .

“Teevo?” said Quenneville, half-smiling and half-se-

“Everybody is saying a different name. Some is Teevo, Tyvo, Toovo. It’s OK.” Quenneville had an idea.

“Maybe his nickname might be TiVo,” Quenneville said.

Perfect.

On another team, Teravainen might have felt more pressure to jump on the ice and save the franchise starting with his first practice shift. But the Hawks have a deep core of strong leaders,

which should allow Teravainen to watch and learn – and to contribute, whenever possible.

The new kid walked slowly but surely toward his first interview outside of the Hawks’ locker room, where he was mobbed by dozens of reporters and TV cameras.

Yes, he offered a couple of nervous laughs, and no, it appeared that he’s never needed to shave, but his words hinted at maturity beyond his years.

“I don’t need to be Superman here,” Teravainen said.

He just needs to be Teevo, Tyvo, Toovo, whatever.

And his once-teenaged teammates are here to help, both on and off the ice.

“He’s so skilled and a very

smart player,” Oduya said.

“For him, I think on the ice will be the least of the problems. And then around it, obviously we’ve got [Finnish goaltender] Antti [Raanta] here, too, and there’s a lot of other Swedes and Europeans.

I think he’s going to feel at home.

“That’s something we have to do on the side, to make sure he has everything he needs to feel comfortable and perform on the ice. Other than that, it’s just a learning curve.”

Cubs understand, prepare for line drives such as Reds’ Chapman

By PATRICK FINLEY pfinley@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – When he was a boy, Carlos Villanueva’s mom was worried sick it would happen.

Four years ago, Jason Hammel’s wife joked she wanted to invent a helmet to protect her husband in the field.

So when Aroldis Chapman struck by a line drive traveling more than 100 mph Wednesday, breaking a bone above his left eye and causing doctors to put a plate in his head Thursday, it was sickening and horrible – but not surprising.

“It seems like we have one of these things happen at least once or twice a year,” said Cubs reliever Wesley Wright, who last year played with the Rays’ Alex Cobb, who in June

was struck by a line drive on the right ear.

Hammel, a Cubs starter, sees a day where a line drive does even worse damage than was inflicted on the Reds reliever, who should return to the field in six weeks or so.

“Honestly, someone’s definitely going to get seriously injured,” Hammel said. “I can see that happening.

“But I think, as with a lot of things, t’s kinda part of the agreement of going up there and being a pitcher.”

Or even a position player.

The day of the 1990 Triple-A opener, Rick Renteria was struck in the face by a batting practice line drive.

In January, Major League Baseball approved the use of padded hats made by IsoBlox, but the company is in the process of making a new prototype.

Brandon McCarthy, the Diamondbacks pitcher who was in the head by a batted ball in 2012, said in January the old versions weren’t game-ready.

Of seven Cubs pitchers consulted this week, none had held the new hat or seen it in the clubhouse; rather, they’d seen pictures online and heard second-hand stories about their weight.

They were more concerned about fielding their position – or at least deflecting a ball – than fitting themselves in a new cap.

Pitchers are creatures of routine and superstition.

A heavier, albeit safer, cap scratches neither itch.

“If they had something that was a cooler design and not as bulky, that would be great,” said reliever James Russell, who talked to McCarthy about

them. ” I still don’t even know if I’d wear one.”

Chris Rusin wouldn’t, either.

“As of right now,” he said, “I’ve heard bad things about it.”

Of course, a new hat wouldn’t have covered Chapman’s face.

“You can’t really put a net in front of anybody,” said Villanueva, the team’s union rep.

Starter Jake Arrieta recalled a scene in the movie “Dumb and Dumber,” where Jeff Daniels’ character, being fitted for a bulletproof vest, asks what happens if he’s shot in the face.

“We’re all very aware of the issue, but there’s only so much you can do,” Arrieta said. “Without putting a cage on a guy’s head out there.”

CHICAGO – Fresh off a transatlantic flight, a young Swede named Johnny Oduya arrived in the Canadian city of Moncton ready to go to work.

He was 18 years old. He carried a suitcase.

“You bring your stuff,” Oduya said. “Obviously, you don’t have that much.”

More than 13 years later, Oduya can afford plenty of additional stuff. The Blackhawks defenseman is an eight-year NHL veteran by now, not a wide-eyed European teenager playing a familiar game in a strange land.

“It’s always something different when you move from where you grew up,” Oduya said. “But seeing the world is something that I enjoy. So, for me, it was fun.”

Maybe some day, Finland native Teuvo Teravainen will share a similar story.

For now, though, he’s 100 percent wide-eyed European teenager.

Teravainen, 19, is the latest prized prospect to join the Hawks’ talent-laden roster.

Former Huskies QB Harmon enjoying time back in DeKalb

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – During Craig Harmon’s playing days at Northern Illinois, BCS bowl games and a facility like the Chessick Center were just figments of everyone’s imagination.

Fast forward nearly 15 years and, for Harmon, who returned to NIU as the Huskies’ tight ends/fullbacks coach back in January, it’s now a reality.

“It’s awesome to be back.

This place is special to me and my family. My son, my wife was teaching him the fight song when he was real little, so this place is home to me,” Harmon said. “I met my wife [Megan, a former soccer player] here when I played here, I GA’d here. This is home, it’s great to be back and see all the changes.”

Harmon played quarterback at NIU from 1998 to 2000 and was a graduate assistant under Joe Novak in 2004 and 2005.

When Harmon came to DeKalb in the fall of 1998, the Huskies were in the midst of what would become a 23-game

losing streak. An Orange Bowl berth or brand-new indoor facility were far-fetched dreams.

The long losing streak NIU endured in the early Novak years is a distant memory.

There’s a winning tradition now.

When it comes to the losing streak, it was Harmon who ended it.

The then-freshman walkon began fall camp as NIU’s sixth-string quarterback in 1998 – Novak’s third season.

But after a series of injuries, he started the Huskies’ fourth game of the year against Ball State and was under center two weeks later when NIU beat Central Michigan, 16-6, to end the losing streak.

“The starter blew his collarbone in the fall scrimmage,” Harmon said. “One kid got mono, one kid tore his ulnar nerve. [Frisman Jackson] hurt his calf. I don’t know what the other injury was but there was another injury. It was a bug.”

Harmon would redshirt in 1999 and transferred to Division II Quincy after the 2000 season.

“I did it because I had

played my freshman year, I wasn’t going to play here again and I wanted to play,” he said. “I wasn’t good enough to play here. I got to play and it was a great experience, and once you get that taste in your mouth you can’t get it out.”

Harmon did end up returning to the school as a GA, and said he still keeps in touch with Novak. Harmon worked under former NIU running backs coach/special teams coordinator Mike Uremovich at the University of St. Francis, and attended some of NIU’s practices leading up to the Orange Bowl, where he got to know Rod Carey.

Harmon came to NIU after spending the 2013 season as the tight ends coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater and helping the Division III powerhouse to a national title.

Harmon played at both the FBS and Division II levels, and coached in the Division III, FCS, FBS and NAIA levels before coming to NIU. “I’ve done it all and I think that’s great,” Harmon said. “I understand the different levels and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Breaking bread I was simmering pork chops Wednesday afternoon, March 19, when I noticed the mailman struggling to fit a small package through the mail slot on my front door. Oh, how I love packages! Particularly this one. And to think, I’d almost forgotten it was coming.

Inside was a beautiful braid of anise-flavored bread, dusted with sesame seeds and baked by my friend, Rose Ann (Scott) Penney, who mailed it from her home in Olympia, Wash.

She’d made the “St. Joseph bread” as part of a traditional Italian-Catholic custom reportedly begun in Sicily during the Middle Ages and passed down to her by her Sicilian relatives.

Raised Catholic – though very nearly completely Irish – I’d never before heard of the Feast of St. Joseph or “Festa De St. Guiseppe,” which is celebrated every March 19 to thank St. Joseph for answered prayers.

According to legend, St. Joseph rescued Sicilians from a devastating drought. In celebration and gratitude, they held a meatless feast in his honor complete with fava beans – the crop that saved them.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose The tradition grew to include the much-anticipated “St. Joseph bread,” and this year Rose Ann (for whom the kids and I cat-sat when we were neighbors in Naperville) decided to share hers with us. I was so honored.

Enclosed with the bread was a copy of the warm and funny story she wrote 15 years ago in honor of her mother and aunt, as she prepared to revive their wonderful tradition. I got such a kick out of it that she permitted me to share it with you here: “The celebration of St. Joseph’s Day, as it was done in my father’s family, started in the small towns of Italy. St. Joseph was the patron saint of families and many had a special devotion to him … . An altar to St. Joseph was set up in the home and a feast of meatless dishes was prepared, usually with a minimum of 13 dishes. In the morning, the priest would

come to bless the table and food and during the day people would visit each home and say a prayer at the table. They were welcome to sample the foods and upon leaving would each be given some cookies and a cannoli.

“Three people were chosen to represent St. Joseph, Mary and Jesus. Before starting the meal, special prayers would be said to St. Joseph invoking his help in caring for the family. The special dishes were served, one at a time, to each of the three saints, who tasted, but were not required to finish, each dish. The leftovers of the feast were then given to the poor of the village.

“In my Grandmother’s house, the three saints were seated at the head of the table … . The women of the family who prepared the feast did not eat any of the food and mostly stayed out of sight preparing the dishes.

The favorite ingredient of the day was the St. Joseph bread.

Large loaves were prepared in the shapes of a wreath, a braid (to represent Mary), a beard and staff (to represent St. Joseph) and an infant (to represent Jesus). These were all placed on the altar, and the wreath was cut

Family came from Le Roy and Rochester and even from Canada. Friends came from the neighborhood, the church and from work … .

Both women were very active in the church community, my mother worked at the local newspaper and my aunt worked at Michael-Sterns (a then – large clothing manufacturer) … you get an idea of the scope of their circle of friends.

“They wanted to share the tradition with everyone, so, instead of one dinner for 13 people (as was the tradition), every person who visited was treated

to the full seven-course meal!

Then, upon leaving, every person was given a bag containing cookies, cannoli and a small loaf of the bread. …By the time I was a junior in high school it seemed the whole church showed up at our home on this special day … though we probably only served 300 people or so. A long table was set in the dining room and TV trays and laps were used by those who could not fit at the table. Many would show up during their lunch hour, and a steady stream followed throughout the rest of the day. … We usually fed the last guests at 10 that evening!

My mother and aunt kept watch over the ever-boiling pots of noodles and spaghetti, and we children – and anyone else we could commandeer – were enlisted to wait tables. As each new group of guests enjoyed their meal they were treated to my mother, who stood in the doorway between the kitchen and dining room, as she told the story of how the feast started in Italy … .

‘Divergent’: This time, it cuts to the quick

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post It’s rare that a movie is as good as the book on which it’s based. It’s even more unusual when it’s better.

With the film adaptation of “Divergent,” the first novel in Veronica Roth’s trilogy of dystopian thrillers, director Neil Burger (“Limitless”) has crafted a popcorn flick that’s leaner, more propulsive and more satisfying than the bestseller that inspired it.

Screenwriters Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor have cut the fat, picked up the pace and sharpened Roth’s themes celebrating individualism and ingenuity, which were muted in Roth’s somewhat sluggish and overlong telling. Daugherty and Taylor have even come up with an ending that more cleverly utilizes the story’s teenage heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley) without changing the outcome.

It’s still cliffhanger-ish, in a way that makes this first installment of the trilogy feel more like an appetizer than a full meal. But the movie’s plot tweak alleviates the sense of mild disappointment generated by the book’s conclusion.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago that is walled off from the rest of the world by a massive rampart, “Divergent” imagines a society in which the citizenry is divided into five monolithic factions according to personality.

Municipal government is controlled by the Abnegation faction, an ascetic class given to self-sacrifice and altruism.

Candor runs the courts; Amity, a commune of hippielike agrarians, works the fields; and the Erudite pursue scientific advancement. Security is left in the hands of the Dauntless, a group of soldiers so intrepid they might better be called the Young and the Reckless.

It’s the Dauntless faction that Tris joins when, at 16, she is allowed to declare a new allegiance. Although all adolescents are given aptitude tests to determine factional affinity, they are also allowed the opportunity to remain in the community of their birth or to select another, even if the test indicates they are not suited for it.

As you may have guessed by now, Tris – by birth a member of Abnegation – is “divergent,” meaning that she has equal aptitude for more than one

Although that makes her merely human, it also means that she’s harder to corral and must hide her capabilities.

In the world of “Divergent,” it’s human nature that got people into the mess they’re in. Segregating them into neat little pods, not by color, but by character, seems as good – or as bad – a solution as any.

Silly, I know. But the film actually does a pretty good job of articulating this rationale. If the absurd premise sticks in your craw, stay away. All others, sit back and enjoy the parable.

The first part of the film focuses mainly on Tris’ initiation as a member of Dauntless, during which time her unusual skills draw attention, both wanted and unwanted. A handsome, brooding trainer known as Four (Theo James) takes her under his bulging biceps, even as Tris earns closer scrutiny from some jealous recruits.

Later, Tris’ contrariness catches the eye of the evil Erudite leader, Jeanine (Kate Winslet), who is plotting a coup against Abnegation with the help of an army of doped-up

Dauntless robots.

Visually, “Divergent” delights, creating a believably decaying Chicago and using a palette of black, white, blue, gray and saffron costumes to delineate the five factions’ uniform-like clothing. Woodley also makes for an appealingly complex Tris, a heroine whose sense of loss at leaving her family behind – along with her sense of identity – is tempered by the thrill of discovering new powers, both moral and physical.

The book spent a lot of ink exploring the romance between Tris and Four. Even if it didn’t use that relationship to define the young heroine, it seemed to be saying that sexual awakening is as much a part of Tris’ journey as anything.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but the movie serves up an even more fully fleshed version of Tris. She’s fascinating for what she does, not merely for whom she likes.

• “Divergent” received three stars, and is rated PG-13 for violence, some obscenity and disturbing thematic material. It runs 130 minutes.

Teen fights depression despite grades Dear Abby: I’m a 15-year-old boy in ninth grade. I have depression, and I don’t know what to do. I always feel like I’m not good enough for anything, even though I have had a 4.0 GPA since seventh grade. I have repeatedly cut myself, but I wear a bracelet so no one can see it.

I don’t want my family to find out because I’m afraid they will treat me like a poor little kid who is too easily offended. I don’t know what to do or who I can go to for help. Thank you for any help you can give me. – Drowning In Despair Dear Drowning: When a person is experiencing so much emotional pain that he (or she) is self-injuring, it’s time to get professional help to deal with it.

Ideally, you should be able to talk to your parents about the depth and duration of your depression. But because you feel you

How to cope with chronic fatigue syndrome Dear Doctor K: I have CFS. What is the latest information about the condition, particularly treatments?

Dear Reader: For readers who are not familiar with the condition, CFS stands for chronic fatigue syndrome. Fatigue is a universal human experience. In our increasingly pressured and fast-paced lives, many people feel tired a lot of the time. In fact, fatigue is one of the most common reasons people visit their doctor.

Yet very few people with fatigue are suffering from CFS. It is relatively uncommon, affecting about 4 to 8 out of every thousand adults in the U.S., and a small fraction of teenagers and younger children.

People with CFS experience ongoing, severe, debilitating fatigue that is not relieved by rest. Other symptoms include: Impaired memory or concentration, sore throat, swollen glands, muscle pain, pain in multiple joints, headaches, and exhaustion following physical activity.

We don’t know what causes CFS. People with CFS are more likely than healthy people – and people with other fatigue-causing diseases – to have various abnormalities.

Many have chronic activation of different parts of the immune system. Many have problems with their cells making enough energy. Many have biochemical abnormalities called oxidative and

Then there are problems involving the brain that have been found, thanks to brain imaging techniques (MRI, SPECT and PET). Brain hormones often respond differently to challenges.

Electrical brain wave studies often show differences. The autonomic nervous system, the part of the brain that controls basic body functions – such as heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature – often does not work properly. But the abnormalities are not seen in all patients with CFS, and they come and go. What is causing these abnormalities remains uncertain.

A combination of the following strategies may help manage your symptoms: • Set priorities. Make a list of things you want to have more energy to do. Eliminate as many nonessential activities as you can.

But be careful to guard against becoming too passive.

• Exercise. Begin an exercise program in which you gradually increase your activity level. This can effectively reduce the severity of your symptoms.

• Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is a type of psycho-

therapy. It helps you identify and change negative thoughts and behaviors. CBT can reduce symptoms.

• Tricyclic antidepressants.

Low doses of this type of antidepressant may improve the quality of your sleep, reduce pain, and increase energy.

• Other medications. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help relieve headaches, joint pain and muscle pain.

Fish oil capsules (3,000 mg per day) may also help reduce CFS symptoms.

There are also several experimental treatments in development. These include drugs to treat abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system, to quiet activated parts of the immune system, and antiviral drugs (for people with certain active viral infections).

I am impressed by the progress made in understanding CFS over the past 25 years. It was made possible by research conducted and supported by the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and private foundations. Still, we have a lot more to learn.

Dump Greg and return ring to rightful owner Dr. Wallace: I met Greg at a friend’s party.

He had a couple of habits that I don’t agree with (smoking and drinking), and he was not real handsome and his grammar needed improvement. But I sort of liked him because he made me laugh. He was a real comedian, and I’ve gone out with him about a dozen times since then.

For my 18th birthday, he surprised me with a friendship ring. It had several small diamonds in it, so I had it appraised at a local jewelry store and was shocked to find out that it was valued at over $600.

Greg is unemployed, so I asked him where he got the ring. He told me that it was his grandmother’s and she gave it to him a year ago so he could give it to the girl he might want to marry. I liked the ring, but I will never marry him.

Somehow I didn’t believe him, so I contacted his granny, and she said he had found it and had given it to her, but she thought she had misplaced it. When I told Greg about this, he said that he won the ring in a poker game a year ago.

After doing a little more detective work, I found out that the ring belonged to his ex-girlfriend’s mother and that it had turned up missing after a party at her house. It has great sentimental value. When I presented Greg with this additional information, he said that he didn’t want me to think he was cheap, but he bought it from a guy who was addicted to cocaine and that he paid $20 for it.

What do you think I should do with this ring? I don’t think it would be wise to give it back to Greg. Then the next question is: what should I do about my relationship with

That way, we could study together and practice the language.

My only problem is that my mother is insisting that I take Spanish because it would be much more useful since we have many Spanish-speaking people in this country.

My dad said I should take Chinese because of the trade between the U.S. and China, but they don’t offer it. What do you think I should do? – Gina. New Orleans, La. Dear Gina: I believe your mother’s reasoning for taking Spanish is correct, and I’d advise you to continue your plans to study Spanish.

Now let’s look at today’s deal, in which responder has his sixth really weak hand of the week. It could have been right to pass over two no-trump, which showed a good 22 to 24 points.

But with a five-card major and a couple of points, it was reasonable to transfer into spades, then rebid three no-trump to offer a choice of games. South, since he had three spades and no diamond stopper, preferred four spades. (Note that the defenders should take five diamond tricks against three no-trump.)

South loses the first two tricks in diamonds. Let’s assume the defenders shift to a heart.
