On page 3 of the Nov. 14 edition of the Kane County Chronicle, an incorrect date appeared in the “Out and About” item, “Chicago World’s Fair program set in Batavia.” The program is scheduled for noon Thursday at the Batavia Public Library. Postal workers against closing of Aurora processing plant By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Local postal workers on Friday protested the planned closure of the Aurora (Fox Valley) mail processing center and the effect they say it would have on mail service. The Aurora facility is one of 82 mail processing and distribution centers across the nation set to close. Postal workers also protested against by the U.S. Postal Service to eliminate overnight delivery. “It’s going to slow down the mail service throughout the country,” said Dave

Fazekas, vice president of the American Postal Workers Union Local 7139 and a St. Charles resident. “It could take five days to get a piece of mail from St. Charles to Batavia in the future.” The Fox Valley mail processing center serves several communities in the area, including Aurora, North Aurora, Batavia, Naperville, Oswego and Yorkville, Fazekas said. U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Beverly Howard noted that plans call for the Fox Valley mail processing operations to move to the South Suburban Mail Pro-

cessing facility in Bedford Park. The consolidation efforts will begin in January, she said. The retail and business mail entry operations will remain in process at Fox Valley, Howard wrote in an email. “With the network rationalization, the U.S. Postal Service is continually improving efficiencies by making better use of space, staffing, equipment and transportation to process the nation’s mail,” Howard wrote. “Improving efficiencies has become increas-

ingly important, given the significant reduction in the amount of first-class mail that enters the postal service.” Beginning in January 2015, mail will be delivered in two days instead of one, according to postal officials. For 49 cents, single-piece First-Class mail will be delivered anywhere in the contiguous United States within three days, officials said. Officials said the changes are needed to reduce the U.S. Postal Service’s overall operating costs by $20 billion by 2017 and to return the Postal Service to financial stability.

Audit finds 50 autopsies unnecessary

Police share tips on how Coroner calls report a ‘farce’ to prepare for coyotes By ASHLEY SLOBODA

asloboda@shawmedia.com

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Given the recent increase in coyote sightings in suburban areas, the St. Charles Police Department on Friday offered a few precautionary tips in a news release. Residents should remove food sources, such as bird food and squirrel feeders and secure their trash. Taking away the unintentional food source might help in reducing the number of sightings, according to the news release. Police also ask small pets are never left unattended while they are outside. Coyotes prey on smaller animals and could mistake the pets as wild animals. The coyotes keep the population of smaller mammals, such as rabbits, under control, the release states. In the event that a coyote does approach, people nearby should yell, stand up and wave arms or throw something at the coyote. There are experienced trappers licensed by the State of Illinois available for the safe removal of coyotes from the area. For information, contact the local Department of Natural Resources at www.dnr.state.il.us or by calling 847-608-3100 for information on licensed trappers. A coyote resembles a small German shepherd dog, but it carries its tail below the level of the back rather than curved upward, according to the Department of Natural Resources. St. Charles police want to remind residents that coyotes are not going away. They have become permanent fixtures in rural, urban and suburban areas in Illinois, so preparing and taking precautions might help residents and coyotes coexist, according to the release.

GENEVA – An autopsy audit prompted by overspending in the Kane County Coroner’s Office determined nearly one-third of the 160 autopsies reviewed were unnecessary, according to a report by former Coroner Mary Lou Kearns. “It is my professional opinion that approximately 50 cases [individual deaths] did not require an autopsy to determine the cause of death,” she wrote. Kearns was hired to review the 2013 autopsies as a way to provide guidance for the future. “I simply ask that you moderate and balance your

self-assurance and spending patterns in this your first administrative, management and political term ... based on the experience and advice of a former coroner who distinguished herself in public service for 23 years in the exact same position in which you currently serve,” Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen wrote in a letter sent Thursday to Coroner Rob Russell. Lauzen said Kearns was paid $10,600 for the consultation. “This entire report was a farce,” Russell said, noting it was “clearly intended” to

embarrass him – not to help him. Reading from a prepared two-page statement, Russell addressed the Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Friday about it. “The same autopsy files that the consultant reviewed after an absence of 15 years from her last death investigation have been reviewed by the coroners of DuPage, McHenry, Kankakee and LaSalle counties without any cost to the Kane County taxpayer,” Russell said. “Their findings are at a complete and total variance from those of Ms. Kearns, and fully support the decisions of my office. Their combined expertise and experience is far more informed and credible than the superficial report you and I received yesterday evening.” Lauzen had few comments Friday. “My letter speaks for it-

self, and the report speaks for itself,” the chairman said. His letter included the financial impact of conducting unnecessary autopsies. “I recognize that you have 100 percent complete authority to spend taxpayer money on every autopsy you desire, and that Ms. Kearns’ review will not and does not intend to change the history of your decisions,” Lauzen wrote. “However, at $1,150 per typical procedure, these 50 autopsies cost potentially $51,500 [sic], and during a four-year term in office, these decisions represent $230,000 in total ... or nearly one-quarter of $1 million of possible unnecessary spending. If all county agencies and departments overspend in a similar way, property taxes will be increased.” Russell is about 6.3 percent over budget and unsuccessfully sought a budget adjustment of about $140,000.

Battle of the Monster Bucks in St. Charles GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Monster Bucks. The phrase sounds like the name of a new Illinois Lottery game. Or maybe the title of horror movie about a mad scientist who tinkers with reanimation, and antlers. In this case though, the term “monster bucks” refers to large, male white-tailed deer – two of them, to be exact, accompanied by a sensational set of circumstances that came to involve several park district staff, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police officer, a knife, a bow saw and, ultimately, a backhoe. The story began a week ago, Saturday morning, when a group of coworkers and volunteers happened to notice what appeared to be a deer carcass in a wooded area maintained by the St. Charles Park District. Closer examination revealed the mass actually was two bucks, their antlers inextricably locked together. Signs around the remarkable scene indicated a battle of epic proportions preceded the deer’s demise. Plants were uprooted, dried leaves pushed aside and bare soil was exposed in several large patches. Clumps of the animals’ thick winter coats – most notably the long, hollow guard hairs – were strewn about, as well. A few of these hairs probably dropped off as a result of the bucks’ exertions, but I’m sure the majority fell when the site was first discovered, not by my colleagues, but rather nature’s first responders: coyotes. We’ll never know for sure whether the ’yotes showed up as the battle waned and one or perhaps both bucks were lying down exhausted, or whether they came after one buck died and the other was left to maneuver as best he could with a 300-pound former adversary locked to his head. Dead tired or plain dead, either way the two magnificent beasts became easy pickings for canis latrans.

The best parts of the deer – the rump, round, shanks and flanks – were torn away, leaving only small amounts of muscle and connective tissue clinging to the rear leg bones. Grisly? Yes. Oddly fascinating? Undoubtedly. Those of us who gathered there in the woods couldn’t help but stare in awe at the size of these two monsters. Deer hunters we’re not, but we knew enough to count the points on the antlers – 14 on one, 17 on the other, including one long and thickened tine that no doubt led to the bucks’ demise. Shaped like a shoehorn, it pointed downward; when wrapped around an opposing tine it created a lock between the two that simply could not be undone. In a perfect world, these fallen warriors would have been left to decompose naturally, their meaty components nourishing other woodland creatures and their bones supplying minerals to rodents and soil alike. But St. Charles, though idyllic, isn’t perfect. The last thing we wanted was to have poachers come along and saw off the antlers, which have considerable value among those who fancy such things. And so we made the decision to harvest the racks ourselves, with the aim of one day having the skulls and antlers as the centerpiece of a Monster Buck display at Hickory Knolls. We faced only one, tiny obstacle: We had no idea of what to do next. We did have one tool, however, and we weren’t afraid to use it. I whipped out the device – my cellphone – and started making calls. The first was to our esteemed colleague, Valerie Blaine. Nature programs manager at the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, and also a hunter, Valerie would know what needed to be done. As luck would have it, her husband, Rod Campbell, a hunter safety instructor with the IDNR, was with her, and the two of them laid out our plan of action. Step One: Call the IDNR Conservation Police. (Goodto-know info ... Illinois has 140 Conservation Police officers, all of whom enforce

Basically, that’s not a lot of staff for an awful lot of territory. If you ever need to get a hold of one of these hardworking law enforcement officials, call 911 and ask to be connected to the Illinois State Police dispatch. Explain your circumstance, and, so long as it’s not an emergency, you will be asked to leave your phone number. A CPO will contact you shortly.) That day, we received a call back in about 20 minutes, and CPO Keith Siedsma arrived about 20 minutes after that. We met him near the road, then walked him back to the scene. Even with his years of experience, Officer Keith was amazed at the sight that laid before him. As we collectively marveled once again at the size of the bucks, and the force at which they’d waged their war, Officer Keith did what anyone who loves and respects wildlife would do: He pulled out his cellphone and started taking pictures. I happened to have a camera on me, and my coworkers had their phones, and so with little else to do, we followed suit. Several minutes of clicking and snapping, along with assorted exclamations of wonder and admiration, ensued. At that point, our time with awesome Officer Keith was about done. We had told him that we possess an IDNR

Scientific Permit, which allows us to salvage native wildlife – all of which belongs to the state – and use it as needed for educational purposes. We also asked, and he obliged, to have deer “tags” – plastic IDNR zip-ties – placed on the antlers of each buck, to prove they were harvested legally. There really was only one matter left to address – the Step Two of our plan, removing the deer from the site. How the heck were we going to get those heads, still firmly attached to 600 lbs. of buck (minus whatever the coyotes had eaten) out of the woods? Thankfully, CPO Keith once again came to our rescue. He reached into his other pocket and pulled out, not another phone, but a knife. Because we were interested only in the skulls and antlers, he quickly sliced through the tissue on the necks of the two superb specimens. Meanwhile, I went off in search of a saw, which I erroneously thought would be easy to find in the many garage bays at Pottawatomie Park. I suppose I should amend that last sentence. The saws were indeed easy to find. It was the getting to them that was difficult. Being quality tools, and it being late on a Saturday, every single workshop, closet and cubbyhole was locked up tight. I actually ended up going home to my own garage and grabbing my trusty bow saw. It has always worked great on brush, branches and Christmas trees; why wouldn’t it work

on deer vertebrae? As I came to learn that day, sawing off deer heads isn’t very hard at all. Nor is carrying the two interlocked beans, especially with two strong coworkers to help. What did turn out to be difficult, in fact, harder than I’d ever imagined, was Step Three – storing the heads in a place that would be rodent-proof (to protect the antlers from being gnawed), as well as cool enough (to keep the stink down) and private enough (to keep our prize from being swiped). I won’t bore you with details, but will note I learned neither a chest freezer, a large metal trash can nor a 55-gallon metal drum were big enough to hold the monstrous racks. Four hours later, and with the help of three other coworkers I eventually had to summon, we made the decision to lock The Boys (as I had begun referring to the heads, given our now long and intimate relationship) somewhat unceremoniously in a nearby outhouse for the night. The backhoe part of the story came in the next day, Sunday, when two of us gathered at a remote, district-owned site and buried the heads 4½ feet underground. This winter, soil microbes and other decomposers will work to remove some of the hide and fleshy parts. In a few months (or several, depending on the winter we’re about to have), after the ground has begun to thaw, we’ll revisit the site to assess the skulls’ progress and determine which course of action to follow next. Nature nerds that we are, I’m sure the saga will be well documented, most definitely with words and quite likely with photos, too. So don’t say I didn’t warn you ... Monster Bucks 2: The Sequel. Coming soon to a newspaper near you.

Faster supercomputer for Argonne U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, helped announce a new collaboration between the Department of Energy, Argonne, Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Argonne National Laboratory is slated to get a faster supercomputer. Government officials announced Friday that Argonne, located near Lemont, is one of three national laboratories that will get supercomputers. The new technology will “put the nation on a fast-track to next generation exascale computing, which will help to advance U.S. leadership in scientific research and promote America’s economic and national security,” according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Energy. Argonne already is home to the fifth fastest supercomputer in the world, said U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, whose district includes part of the Argonne site. The new supercomputer will be 10 to 15 times faster than MIRA, the supercomputer now at Argonne, Foster said. The supercomputer should arrive sometime in 2017, he said.

“It means that they will be able to attack a wider variety of problems and get their answers faster,” Foster said. He said one example of research being done at Argonne that will be aided by a faster supercomputer is the development of new battery technology for use in electric cars and power grids. Argonne National Laboratory is split between Foster’s district and that of U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs. U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced that $325

Wolf Bros.

million will be spent to build two state-of-the art supercomputers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Details on the Argonne supercomputer will be announced later, according to the Energy Department. Foster said the price tag on the Argonne supercomputer should be comparable with those at the other two national laboratories. But, “the specifications for the Argonne machine have not been completed,” he said.

BATAVIA – Local residents now have a new public transportation option. Pace Suburban Bus Service recently started the Batavia Call-n-Ride program. Along with providing transportation between the Geneva Metra train station and Fermilab’s Wilson Hall, the service provides door-to-door service to commuters traveling anywhere within the designated service area. The service area is bounded by Randall Road, Fabyan Parkway, Western Avenue, the Metra Union-Pacific/ West line, the Fox River, Kirk Road, Wilson Street, Morton Street, Millview Drive and Main Street. The Batavia Call-n-Ride program operates from 6:30 a.m. to 6:50 p.m. weekdays, and one-way tickets are $1.75. Trips are scheduled on a firstcome, first-served basis, and

those who want to use the service can call one day in advance to schedule a trip. Fermilab environmental specialist Eric Mieland said the service has been well received. The service started Oct. 13. “We have riders every day taking it,” he said. Fermilab started talking to Pace about a year ago about possible service between the lab and the Geneva train station, Mieland said. “We had a desire to figure out a way to get employees from the train station to the lab,” he said. “We started a dialogue with them to see what would be available.” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke also said he was pleased with the new program. “It seems to be an idea whose time has come,” he said. Information about the Batavia Call-n-Ride program is available by calling 847-2547471.

Private high school could lead to improved choices A new educational option is headed to the Tri-Cities. Harbridge College Prep Academy, a private high school, is scheduled to open in Batavia in fall 2015, starting with just a freshman class. The proposed school is promoting a strong focus on preparing students for college and seems to be generating interest. “Each student will have a faculty mentor to ensure that his/her courses and preparation are keeping them on a road to success,” states www.harbridgeprep.org. “School counselors will devote adequate time to guide students through the college admission process, as well as dealing with students’ personal goals and social, emotional concerns. These support persons will follow the student his/her entire four years until graduation. “The Harbridge class schedule is modeled to that of most colleges, giving students the flexibility to choose electives that interest them, as well as opportunities to participate in job internships, service learning, and acclimate themselves to what college classrooms are really like.” Yes, many of these talking points sound similar to what public high schools in the area already offer our students. It will be how Harbridge executes such goals that will truly determine whether the school provides a different type of learning experience. Competition in education – when executed by competent companies and individuals – can lead to improved choices for consumers. We’re optimistic that Harbridge will offer a solid educational choice to parents and children in the Tri-Cities. (And we’re glad to see the school going into the historic Campana building at the corner of Route 31 and Fabyan Parkway.) In addition to an emphasis on college readiness, Harbridge will not be “obsessed” with test preparation, said Dr. Michael Bakalis, the president and CEO of the American Quality Schools Corporation, which created Harbridge College Prep Academy. That alone could very well differentiate Harbridge from other schools in the area. Time will tell. And time also will tell what type of school Harbridge does become, in terms of staff, extracurricular activities and attitude. With standout high schools already a part of the educational scene in Kane County, we’re hoping that Harbridge can just be another viable option for local families to consider.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

ANOTHER VIEW

A need to shut the door to cyberthreats THE WASHINGTON POST Six years ago, the federal government’s classified computer networks were infiltrated by a tiny bit of malware. A massive operation known as Buckshot Yankee was carried out to clean the networks of the intruder, and the event helped spur the creation of U.S. Cyber Command, which is now growing rapidly. The government has put cyberthreats at the top of its national security threat matrix. But one of the debates that began then remains unresolved: How to protect large and vulnerable private-sector networks? Not all the answers can be found in government. But on actions that do require legislation, this session of Congress and the one before it have come to an impasse. It is time for the lame-duck session, or the new one convening in January, to take the bipartisan path forward that a number of

legislators have laid out. What seemed potentially worrisome a few years ago – the mushrooming threat of sneaky, self-directing malware – now appears almost commonplace, and more dangerous than ever. For many corporations, large costs are involved with each attack. Some of the worst credit card data thefts may be remedied by the planned rollout of chip-andPIN technology, but in a larger sense, private networks in the United States remain vulnerable and under near-constant assault. A few years ago the thinking was that the government, with sophisticated cybersecurity tools, could scout private networks and help identify and defend against the bad actors. But Congress could not swallow this aggressive approach, and it became even less palatable after the disclosures by contractor Edward Snowden that the National

Security Agency was collecting telephone and Internet metadata from U.S. citizens. Since then, a modest goal of cybersecurity legislation has been to facilitate information-sharing about threats between the government and private sector. The House and the Senate intelligence committee have each passed legislation that would, in essence, order the administration to set up a method for real-time sharing of cyberthreat information between federal agencies and private companies and clear away legal impediments to doing so. Both bills had bipartisan support. The House proposal was approved in April 2013, 288-127, with about half of the Democrats voting for it. The Senate committee vote, taken in secret last July, was 12-3. Doing nothing means leaving the door open to those who intend to disrupt, steal and spy in cyberspace.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Salvation Army has wanted to open a store in the St. Charles area for some time, Manzella said. The organization finally settled on the former Dominick’s property, which officials said is big enough to suit their needs. The store will be open

from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The store itself will be closed on Sunday, but donations still will be accepted in a drive-thru area attached to the store, Manzella said. Proceeds from the stores, including the St. Charles location, go toward The Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center in Chicago. The center serves people who voluntarily check themselves in for addiction treatment and provides them with job training and other services, Manzella said. Manzella said 16 people have been hired, and about 30 full-time positions still need to be filled at the store. “We want to hire directly from St. Charles,” Manzella said. “We think that’s really important.”

GENEVA FOOTBALL

‘LET’S TAKE A ROAD TRIP’ ‘Loose all playoff season,’ Vikings embrace showdown with top seed Cary-Grove By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Even before Thanksgiving break loomed, current Geneva football players encountered former ones at various places around town. Naturally, the buzz surrounding the Class 7A playoffs dominated the conversation. At 1 p.m. today, the Vikings will visit top-seeded Cary-Grove in the program’s first quarterfinal since the 2008 team finished as 7A state runners-up. “When we start getting further along, we hear guys come back and talk about, ‘Oh, do you remember …?” and when they made the run. You hear stories about that all the time,” Geneva senior left guard Joey Wagner said. “There’s comparisons. Not necessarily from the talent, but just as the fact that we can deal with adversity and things like that. That’s more the comparison.” Should the Vikings (10-1) get past the Trojans (11-0), they’ll undoubtedly be able to measure their postseason gantlet against that of any other Geneva team. CaryGrove and its well-documented, triple-option offense is a load, but Geneva finds that reality only boosts its collective psyche. No slouches themselves, the Vikings still are blemished, losing, 26-20, at Batavia in Week 8. The Trojans, meanwhile, haven’t trailed this season, and their firstteam defense is unscored upon since Week 6. “Here’s the deal with this team,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “If they go out, and they just pound, pound, pound, pound, score and then we go three and out, and they go pound, pound, pound, pound, score – it’s going to be the same old game. They need to get uncomfortable somehow. I’m not sure

Sean King for Shaw Media

The Geneva football team withstood a late rally from Rockton Hononegah to win its Class 7A, second-round playoff game, 26-20, on Burgess Field on Nov. 8. The fourth-seeded Vikings advanced to face unbeaten top seed Cary-Grove in today’s quarterfinals. The Trojans have won most of their games comfortably and haven’t trailed all season, but the Vikings say that only makes their hosts feel more pressure. if we can do it. I’m not sure if we’re the team to do it. We need chaos. We need something that they’re not used to.” On the surface, Geneva’s deep threat passing game holds potential as a crucial outlier. Trojans coach Brad Seaburg admitted “nobody on our schedule is as effective as Geneva as far as having the weapons they have” through the air – not even spread-centric Huntley, an 8A qualifier. Vikings senior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina enjoys an arsenal of wide

receivers that boasts plenty of speed and stands no shorter than 6-foot-1. Best friend Pace Temple leads the group, catching 12 of Santacaterina’s 21 touchdown passes. That kind of production led most opposing defenses to focus on Temple, allowing Mike Landi and Jack Wassel to develop their own rapport with Santacaterina. Wicinski knows he’s blessed with “Santa,” too, and is fond of taking fourth-down gambles with Santacaterina in Geneva’s familiar (if not Shakespearean) “to punt or

not to punt” formation. The fourth-seeded Vikings, who won their first two playoff games at home, also see their penchant for risk-taking as a possible edge. “I don’t know. This reminds me a lot of a firstround game,” Wicinski said. “I hate first-round games, because, you know, I’m kind of supposed to win and yet my playbook’s not completely open because the window’s smaller now with turnovers and all. I’ve got to feel that

St. Francis junior outside hitter Molly Haggerty powered the Spartans to a three-set victory against Breese Mater Dei, smacking a match-high 16 kills Friday to send the two-time defending state champion Spartans into tonight’s state championship match against Joliet Catholic. Kamryn Malloy (10 kills) followed. “I think we really stuck as a team that last, third set,” said Haggerty, a Nebraska recruit. cis (37-4) dominated the early stages of the decisive set, rolling to a 14-5 lead, and the Spartans cruised to the finish. “I think we really stuck as a team that last, third set,” junior outside hitter Molly Haggerty said. “We’ve played against tough teams like Mother McAuley and went three, and I think just playing and having a tough schedule gets us ready for these situations. “I think the whole time we stayed calm. I mean the crowd was very loud, but I think we just stayed together as a team and focused on us on the court and not anything around us, so I think that really helped our chemistry on the court and just our play.” Haggerty, a Nebraska-bound junior, brought her vicious kills to the big stage, belting a match-high 16 kills. Mater Dei coach Chad Rakers said he’s proud of “these small-town kids right here,

playing against some big-time Chicago kids.” Haggerty certainly qualifies as big-time. “I mean she’s a major, D-I prospect for a reason, and she’s going to be around for another year, so we’re going to have to figure out some solution,” Rakers said. “Solution No. 1 was try to keep the ball away from her but occasionally they’re going to get the ball to her, and we’ve got to be there to block it. If we miss a blocking assignment [against Haggerty], it’s going to show.” Kamryn Malloy added 10 kills for the Spartans and junior setter Daniele Messa continued her impressive season, accounting for 39 of the Spartans’ 45 assists. St. Francis had a chance to put it away in two, leading 17-16 in the second set after a dump-kill from Messa, but that was the Spartans’ last lead of the game as Mater Dei thrived late behind a diverse set of attackers.

Mater Dei rallied from a 13-6 deficit in the first set to take a 19-18 lead, but the Spartans regrouped and closed it out on a kill from senior middle hitter Mary Boken. Tonight’s championship opponent, Joliet Catholic, strikes a chord with the Spartans. The programs were fre-

quent postseason rivals in recent years, often meeting in sectional championship matches, but a change in sectional slotting allowed the traditional powers to meet in Normal this time. The Angels (25-16) uncharacteristically struggled early in the season – including a rocky showing at the Geneva Invitational – but have progressed in recent weeks, and took out St. Francis’ Suburban Christian Conference rival, Montini, in three sets in Friday’s first semifinal. “They are a team to always be respected. Always,” Kopec said. “They play a tough schedule as we do, and it will be pretty exciting to see them here.”

NORMAL – Ten state championships into her legendary career, and it’s a reasonable question. Does going downstate – and often thriving once there – lose any luster for coach Peg Kopec and her St. Francis girls volleyball program? Kopec addresses that as spiritedly as her team performed during Friday’s 25-21, 21-25, 25-17 win against Breese Mater Dei in an IHSA Class 3A state semifinal. “We all dream of it, and to be in it any time is a thrill – just a thrill,” Kopec said. “I hope it isn’t the thrill of their lifetime, I hope not, but I bet it’ll be in their top 10, forever.” The Spartans advanced to tonight’s state championship match against Joliet Catholic as St. Francis pursues a Class 3A three-peat at Redbird Arena. Mooseheart cagers won’t shrink from challenge New era on horizon for defending 1A champs as South Sudanese trio departs

Show’s over, folks. Mooseheart boys basketball coach Ron Ahrens recognizes that’s the outlook most will have on his defending IHSA Class 1A boys basketball state champion Red Ramblers after departed seniors Makur Puou, Akim Nyang and Mangisto Deng left the building. The South Sudanese trio – all standing 6-foot-7 or taller – gave the Ramblers an extreme size and athleticism advantage over other small-schools teams. Making matters all the more challenging for this year’s squad, point guard Freddy Okito transferred out, meaning Hameed Odunewu is the lone returning starter from last year’s juggernaut. But as Mooseheart began preseason practice this week, Ahrens said the Ramblers aren’t planning to slink quietly back to basketball anonymity. “I think there are kids that are eager to prove that we’re not going to be as bad as people think we are,” Ahrens said. “I think that’s kind of

the mindset we have because I’m sure people are going to say, hey, ‘We can really get Mooseheart this year, they’re not going to be any good,’ and I think these guys really want to prove people wrong.” The 6-foot-4 Odunewu goes from the second smallest member of Mooseheart’s starting five to the tallest guy on this year’s squad. Already known as a high-motor player who excels in the open court and on defense, Odunewu is all the more driven this season, Ahrens said. “I think he’s playing a little bit harder than he has before,” Ahrens said. “I think his energy level is up because he’s kind of the guy now. Instead of just being a cog in the wheel, he’s kind of the wheel.” Junior wing Josh Gordon, junior point guard Ramiro Sanchez and sophomore guards Tarry Johnson and Ryan Young are among the up-and-comers that Ahrens said should keep Mooseheart competitive. “I just think the talent level we’ve had on campus is going to be really beneficial for us because these kids coming up have been practicing against what I think is the best team in the state the last two years, and I think that’s

Ahrens said a few players with international ties could become eligible – including 7-foot-3 Bol Riek and 6-foot-4 Ceda Makindu – pending the outcome of a court challenge to the IHSA’s transfer bylaws that Ahrens expects to be resolved later this month. For now, though, the Ramblers are looking to show their program has staying power without Puou, Deng and Co.; that pair is now playing junior college ball at

I think there are kids that are eager to prove that we’re not going to be as bad as people think we are. I think that’s kind of the mindset we have because I’m sure people are going to say, hey, ‘We can really get Mooseheart this year, they’re not going to be any good,’ and I think these guys really want to prove people wrong.” - Ron Ahrens, Mooseheart boys basketball coach

What’s the early outlook for the team? Hopefully, something really positive. I mean, we all work really well with each other and we read everyone really well, so hopefully we’ll come up with a winning season. Better than last year.

Weekend Chit-chat with STC NORTH GIRLS BASKETBALL’S MORGAN ROSENCRANTS It sounds like there are a handful of girls, you included, who can play multiple positions. How does that improve you? Yeah, I think everybody’s adapting to Claire coming in, and everybody’s been able to be more versatile. And moving people to the guards and moving me out of the post, which helps us, too. Because that’s my strong suit, is driving to the basket. ... And then we have a strong post [group] this year. So that’s really going to help us.

When did you first play alongside Claire? I started playing basketball in seventh grade, and she was on my seventh-grade

team, then eighth grade. And then I joined AAU teams with her, and we were on the same AAU team, so I’ve known her since then … [on the] Illinois Lady Lightning. … Now I play for Illinois Hoop Dreams, and she plays for Midwest Elite.

Is this still going to be a runand-gun, fast-paced brand of basketball? Yeah. Everything is push, push, push in transition. … We’re conditioning every day in practice, and it’s helping us get better and we’re going to be in better condition, better shape than most teams.

How do you guys like playing different teams right off the bat? I think it’s a really big confidence-booster. Either way if we win or lose, we find out our strong suits and our weak suits, and find out what we can go back into the gym and work on for the rest of the season. And if we win, then it’s a big confidence-booster.

What else should I know? Just looking forward to the season.

• VIKINGS Continued from page 20 [Seaburg] feels like that. All the pressure’s on them. We’ve been loose all playoff season, but we’re really going to be squirrelly on this one. I’m going to try to keep their heads into it. “It’s kind of exciting. I’ve always had great memories playing the best programs in the state, and this is one of them. So we’re kind of excited. I’m done with this field. Burgess Field, I’m done. I want to go somewhere. That’s what playoffs are about, you know. They’ve been great. The fans have been great, but, you know what I mean? Let’s go. Let’s take a road trip. It’s like Wisconsin and back, right? Make it hurt.” Geneva devoted a much shorter commute to stewing over the Batavia game, which put the Bulldogs on track for their fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title. Santacaterina, who threw five interceptions that night

– he had six in seven games coming in – called it “the best thing for us” earlier this week. “On the bus back, you know what, we were all pretty down. But we knew there was a lot more to come. A lot of season ahead,” senior defensive end Matt Loberg said. “So, you know what, if we can’t go get that conference championship, we might as well get another championship that’s even bigger than that. So that was our mindset after that game.” There’s no true defensive equivalent to going for it on fourth down, so Geneva defenders relish when Wicinski directs their offensive teammates to push the envelope. They insist there’s a trickle-down effect. “I love seeing Wiz freak out the ref,” junior defensive lineman Steve Kemp said. “It makes me feel like he’s got my back.” The Vikings, in turn, support one another, and are eager to match up against Cary-Grove. A win would vault them into the semifinals and provide a new talking point, to boot.

The St. Charles North girls basketball team returns most of its core from last season, including junior forward Morgan Rosencrants, one of several North Stars poised for a breakout 2014-15 campaign. North also welcomes a few newcomers, but one, Montini transfer post Claire Jakaitis, actually played with Rosencrants as the two grew up in District 303 schools. Speaking with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Rosencrants addressed the upcoming season – the North Stars open play in the Pontiac Tournament next week – and also spoke about her rapport with her teammates. Here’s an edited transcript:

Marshall explains Twitter exhange By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – To no one’s surprise, there was a method to Brandon Marshall’s – well, madness, for lack of a better term – on Twitter. On Thursday, Marshall challenged a Lions fan on Twitter to a boxing match. On Friday after practice, Marshall addressed reporters in the locker room. “Do you think I’m a smart guy? Do you think I’m a strategic guy. This is what I want to do. I want to blow this thing even bigger. I want to launch a campaign of anti-bullying,” he said. “But look at … not a campaign like we’re going to start an organization. We’re going to have an event. And we’re going to have a nice ring. And have it at my ring. And get some gloves. “And we’re going to get maybe Showtime. Maybe you guys. Maybe NBC can come out, produce it and try to raise a lot of money for anti-bullying. “That’s where the world’s going right now, with Twitter and Instagram. Everybody wants to hide behind their words. Even sometimes the media wants to hide behind their words and think that they’re tough guys. This is

an opportunity for him to do something nice for some kids. But also back up his words.” Marshall said it doesn’t matter what the Bears’ record is when this exchange took place. “Because we’re 3-6 you expect me to change who I am? This is who I am. I’m not changing who I am.” Coach Marc Trestman said the situation would be “addressed” and explained his philosophy on his players and social media. “We’re in a new world of social media,” he said. “We talk to our guys about it. We don’t police everything that they do. we ask them to take a deep breath before they press that send button. Hopefully they make decisions that are in the best interest of their team. But we’re not perfect, none of us are.” Trestman emphasized that the Twitter battle had nothing to do with preparation for Sunday’s game against the Vikings, saying, “I don’t want to make this anything more than what it was – It was a response on social media.” Et cetera: Offensive lineman Jordan Mills (ribs) and receiver Josh Morgan (shoulder) did not practice Friday. Mills is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Vikings, and Morgan is questionable.

WEEKEND LIFE Gone campusing Traversing the topic of college-visit attire I took Noah for his first campus visit Monday morning. Actually, he took himself. He drove the hour and a half it took for us to get there, on mostly crowded highways, while I simply tagged along, held my breath and picked up the tab. Actually, his first college visit happened over two years ago, after a visit to a beach in Wisconsin. I’d spotted signs for George Williams College and decided, on a whim, to stop and have a look-see. Actually, I had to pee. Whatever. “Come on guys,” I said to Noah and his buddy, Davis, “get out of the car and stretch your legs. Have a look around! It’s gorgeous. We’ll call this your first college visit,” I said, laughing, as – their eyes big as moons – they reluctantly followed me into the admissions building. I still crack up over that one. But Noah, a high school junior, now seems poised to grab the bull by the horns. We got through this campus visit just fine, but not without a fashion crisis. (Lest he balk at such a statement, let me clarify that the crisis was mine, not Noah’s.) Early last week he asked if we could visit this school, as he’d been considering it since our conversation with the school’s recruiter at a recent college fair at Waubonsee Community College. We knew little about it, except that they have a lovely recruiter who said all the right things and a huge price-tag that still takes my breath away, but I was intrigued that the kid wanted to get the ball rolling, so I agreed. (Strike while the iron is hot, right?) On our way out the back door on Sunday afternoon (the program began at 8:30 Monday morning, and we didn’t feel like competing with rush-hour traffic), I asked if he’d packed his good shoes. “These ARE my good shoes,” he said, as we glanced down at his grey Under Armor sneakers. “Huh,” I replied, as I racked my brain. I knew he had a nice pair somewhere, but perhaps he outgrew them? I wasn’t certain what the dress code was for campus tours, but insisted that he at least pack khakis and a nice sweater. His khakis are a denim-ish material, the perfect “not sloppy, but not trying too hard” look. (As for the first undershirt he’d pulled out of his drawer, it underwhelmed. “Mom, can you see the dirt on this one?” he’d asked, as I giggled and leaned in to inspect the stains before he rooted around for another.) But perhaps the sneakers wouldn’t be so obvious, I reasoned, as we were on a roll, leaving only 90 minutes after we’d hoped we would. Off we went. An hour later I spotted some outlet stores. Should we stop and quickly buy shoes for

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose Noah, I wondered, so he could, you know, put his best foot forward? No telling what might have happened had I been behind the wheel, but, alas, Noah was in the driver’s seat – as it should be. We didn’t stop. As for what parents should wear to these things, I polled my friends. Sandy sagely suggested “clothes,” while Devonne recommended “casual wear.” Ann agreed that I didn’t have to dress up, but I was stumped. I said we’d be stopping off to rob a bank, on our way there (you know, pricey school), so Natalie thought black pants and black and white-striped shirts might fit the bill. Ha! Kathy suggested we wear “clothes that make you look very poor so they give you loads of financial aid!” (clever, that one), and Stacey gave me the best advice of all. “Casual, decent jeans are fine (much as I wanted to, I just couldn’t bring myself to wear jeans. I noticed that several people did, but I opted for slacks, a blouse, and loafers), but more importantly, COMFORTABLE SHOES!!!!” Boy, was she right. Following the admissions and financial-aid lectures, and a student-panel Q-and-A, we embarked on a 90-minute campus tour. You know, a HIKE. Forget worrying about fashion, folks. In fact, I’d recommend interval training to prepare for such visits. Really. Because it’s not merely the physical exertion of hiking over hill and dale, through this building and that building and up stairs and back down again – oh no. It’s the mental wearand-tear such visits inspire. You’re imagining your baby LIVING in this place, away from you, ON HIS OWN (again, my issue, not his), and imagining all of this while, inevitably, passing through the lobby of a residence hall and spotting a bulletin board advertising an upcoming discussion about “Sex-pectations.” Yes, yes indeed, you read that right: SEX-PECTATIONS. Stacey’s right. Wear comfortable shoes. Take it from me, it’s a long hike. Besides, they’ll keep you upright when you wobble after you’ve puked just a little in your mouth, so you don’t embarrass your kid by falling to your death in a dormitory stairwell.

Holiday cactus care I decided to change things up last Christmas and purchased a holiday cactus at the local nursery, in addition to planting my usual Amaryllis bulbs. It bloomed a beautiful salmon color and remained in bloom for several months. In my usual operating style, I did some research on the care of my holiday cactus afterward only to discover that holiday cacti come in Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas varieties that bloom accordingly. I have a Thanksgiving variety that has flattened leaves with pointed teeth. The Christmas cactus has flattened leaves with rounded teeth and the Easter cactus has pointed teeth with fibrous hairs in the leaf joints. Also I found, to my surprise, that they are native to the rain forests of Brazil and not to the dry desert. This explains why they need to be watered more often than a desert cactus or the leaves start to shrivel. The care of the holiday cactus includes watering thoroughly and then allowing the soil to dry slightly in between. Overwatering can cause root rot. They thrive on bright, indirect light, especially when flowering. Feed with a complete household fertilizer monthly from April to October. Prune the stems by a few sections in June to increase branching. You can root the removed segments of stem by placing them in moist

LEARNING TO GROW Darlie Simerson vermiculite. The cactus will live and thrive outside in a shady spot in the summer. Flower colors for the holiday cactus range from white, pink, purple, red and salmon. There is also a lovely yellow variety. The challenge of having a holiday cactus oftentimes is that it does not bloom each year. The key is to remember these plants are short-day bloomers. They do not bloom until the nights are 15 hours long and temperatures are below 70 degrees. Nighttime light interruptions (streetlights, indoor lights kept on at night) or increased temperatures (nearby heating vent) will prevent flowering. Plants left outside in a shaded area until nighttime temperatures drop to 50 degrees, are more likely to bloom once brought indoors. Placing the plant in a dark, cool area for 12 to 15 hours daily should begin in October. Once the bloom occurs, keep the plant in a cool area and do not allow the soil to become too dry. Enjoy those holiday cactus blooms this holiday season!

ADVICE

Dear Abby: I am a junior in high school and will graduate in the first semester of my senior year. Someday I would like to be a stayat-home mom. I have no interest in going to college. I feel it would be a waste of money for me to go when I don’t intend to use my degree. To say my parents are disappointed in me over this is putting it mildly. They have a life planned for me that includes college. I would also like to move away to somewhere where it’s warm yearround, and they don’t like that idea either. How do I make them understand that this is MY life and everything will be OK? – Uninterested In Idaho Dear Uninterested: I’ll paraphrase an old proverb: “When man makes plans, God laughs.” What it means in your case is that a smart cookie stays FLEXIBLE. Let’s say, for instance, that you

Jeanne Phillips get the life you fantasize about: You marry a man who adores you, doesn’t mind that you have only a high school degree and is wealthy enough to support you. You have two or three beautiful children together and things are going great. But what if, heaven forbid, he becomes seriously ill and can’t work – or worse, drops dead, leaving you the sole support of those kids? It has been known to happen. (And then, of course, there’s also the possibility of divorce.) Be SMART. Listen to your parents, and arm yourself with the best education you can. Dear Abby: The school year has started and many high school girls like me are faced with a similar problem: how to politely decline

when a boy asks you to a dance. Some boys go all out and ask girls in elaborate and creative ways. I don’t know what to do in these situations if I don’t want to go with the boy who is asking me. I feel bad saying “no” because of all the work they put into it. Should I just go anyway? – Saratoga Teen Dear Saratoga Teen: If “many” girls share your problem, it’s news to me. Most of the ones I hear from worry that they won’t be asked. If the young man has made a production out of inviting you, say thank you and that you’re flattered, but you’ll have to think about it and will get back to him later. P.S. That said, keep this in mind – sometimes, a girl ends up having a good time with the person she least expected to. • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.

Pregnancy does not have long-term effects for women with MS Dear Doctor K: I have multiple sclerosis. My husband and I would like to have a baby. What do I need to know before I get pregnant? Dear Reader: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects communication between nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body. This results in symptoms that may include fatigue, weakness, pain and trouble with movement. In the most common form of the disease, sudden worsening of symptoms (flare-ups or relapses) alternate with symptom-free periods (remissions). Women get MS considerably more often than men. In addition, MS in women often begins in their 20s or 30s – just the time when many women are thinking about starting a family. Fortunately, getting pregnant does not seem to affect the risk of developing MS. But you already have MS, so the question you need answered is whether getting pregnant will have any adverse effects on you or your baby. The good news is that pregnancy and childbirth do not have any negative long-term effects on women with MS, or on their babies. There are, howev-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff er, issues you need to consider if you’re thinking about becoming pregnant. It’s important to address your medications. Your doctor may recommend stopping your medications before and during your pregnancy, as MS drugs may not be safe for your baby. Talk to your doctor before you start trying to get pregnant. He or she can tell you how long it will take for the drugs to leave your system, and when it will be safe for you to become pregnant. Will being pregnant affect your MS? Pregnancy itself seems to protect against disease flareups. But it can make women with MS more susceptible to various symptoms and conditions, including fatigue, constipation and urinary tract infections. The first six months after you’ve given birth, on the other hand, are the highest-risk period for disease flare-ups. During this time, you’ll want to take as good care of yourself as possible to reduce the risk of a relapse. That means getting enough rest

and trying to avoid infections, fevers, stress and anemia. If your baby doesn’t sleep through the night, that’s easier said than done. If at all possible, I’d strongly recommend asking family members for support or hire additional help during the weeks or months after delivery. But if your symptoms do get worse in the first months after giving birth, the worsening is unlikely to be permanent. Talk to your doctor about whether to breast-feed. Most mothers with MS can nurse a baby, and it does not seem to increase the risk of flare-ups. On the other hand, some women with MS might find breast-feeding too tiring. Also, if you choose to breast-feed, you may need to wait until you stop breast-feeding to start taking your medications again. So, having MS does not mean you will have to deal with longterm negative effects from your pregnancy. You just need to consider the realities that you will have to deal with.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 12 years old and I live with my mother because my parents got a divorce when I was only 9. My problem is that my mother has recently remarried and now my mother and I have two different last names. If my mother comes to school, the teacher calls her by her married name and my friends want to know why I have a different last name. One time the school secretary also asked me about this. All this makes me feel embarrassed and deep down it even hurts my feelings. My mother talks to me about this and tells me that I shouldn’t worry about it because none of this is my fault and that others will understand. But I still don’t know what to say when other people ask me about the different names. – Nicole, Columbus, Ohio Dear Nicole: Don’t go into lengthy details. Simply tell them the truth – that your parents were divorced when you were young and that your mom has remarried. There are times when divorce is best for everyone concerned, even for the children. Your mother is right – nothing was your fault. The hurt you feel now will fade as you grow older. Dr. Wallace: Our high school is having a huge dance, and I’m on the committee to help with the decorations. My problem is that our church doesn’t allow any dancing because they believe that dancing is not an appropriate activity for teens. I would not dance with anyone, but I would

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace like to attend the dance and enjoy seeing our decorations and hearing the music. Another girl from our church was on the committee with me and her parents are allowing her to attend and they would drive us there. My parents said they didn’t care what my friend does, but they don’t want me to attend the dance. I was on the committee and I don’t think they are being fair not to let me go. A group of teachers will be chaperones and even the principal will be there. Please tell my parents that I would like to see the decorations that I worked so hard on and that it would be nice if I could attend. They read your column every day. – Nameless, Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Nameless: As a high school administrator, I encouraged all students to attend our well-chaperoned dances. But when students were forbidden to attend because of religious beliefs, I understood that religious beliefs always have first priority. Is it possible that your parents would allow you to stop in for five or 10 minutes just to see the results of your efforts on the decorating committee? I’m sure your principal would allow your parents to visit with you for a quick look at the results of your decorating techniques. • Email Dr. Robert Wallace at rwallace@ galesburg.net.

TODAY – Be wise in your choices this year. If you pick the right path, you can make your dreams come true. Plans and preparation are your strong points. Your strength of character will lead you in the direction you want to go. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) – Stay out of the limelight. Someone may be trying to make you look bad. You need to regroup and consider who your friends are. Ferret out the information you need. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) – Don’t worry too much about a friend or relative who insists on meddling in your affairs. Just tell this person to mind his or her own business. You must respect yourself and your goals, and not allow anyone to interfere. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) – Your need to make changes may appear to be out of character to your loved ones. Follow your heart. If you make your actions and motivations transparent, those around you will be able to understand you much better. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) – A child or lover may demand special attention. Don’t give in too readily if you have made a prior commitment. You must respect your needs as well. Postpone the purchase of luxury items at this time. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) – Be careful with some of your health problems. Make an appointment with your doctor to check things out. Rest and relaxation will be in your best interest. If you have the wherewithal to take a vacation, do so. ARIES (March 21-April 19) – This is a good time for you to talk to potential partners, whether they be for business, romance or pleasure. Be careful not to overspend on entertainment. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) – Difficulties with the finances of your family or those you live with will be unnerving. Figure out a way to deal with fiscal uncertainty. Your energy will be low, so get plenty of rest. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) – Your conscious and subconscious minds may be at odds with one another. Do some soul searching in order to discover which path you should follow. Solitude will be beneficial. CANCER (June 21-July 22) – Avoid financial ventures of any kind today. A friend or youngster in your life may take drastic measures to get your attention. Try to understand what’s behind it. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) – Disruptions beyond your control may ruin your regular routine. Be prepared to accept things as they unfold. Physical fitness programs will ease your tension. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) – You may not be able to handle the innuendos that a friend or relative is making. Ignore what he or she is saying and focus your attention elsewhere. You can accomplish great things. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) – Empty promises are evident. Don’t quit your present job unless you have another one in the bag. Contracts will not be as lucrative as they appear. Read the fine print.

PUZZLES CROSSWORD

SUDOKU

BRIDGE by Phillip Alder

Was he pushed, or did he fall?

CELEBRITY CIPHER

Jason Derulo, a singer-songwriter and dancer, said: “If you think you’ve already made it, that’s when you can fall short and go backwards. I’m constantly pushing forward and chasing the element of perfection.” It is impossible to find perfection at the bridge table. Mary Fort of St. Louis, Missouri, sent me this deal with the heading: Pushed to Slam. What do you think of the auction at her table during a duplicate? Most players would open one spade with that West hand. However, it is not silly to pass, hoping to make a descriptive two-suited bid on the second round. Some Norths would have overcalled four hearts, especially at the favorable vulnerability. There is an expression “bid more with six-four,” so presumably one should bid even more with seven-four. Over an opponent’s weak jump overcall, responder with support for partner’s major suit should bid one level higher than he would have done in an uncontested auction. Here, East’s hand was worth a game-invitational limit raise, so he should have jumped to four spades. (With a game-forcing spade raise, East would have cue-bid four hearts.) South’s four diamonds was risky because it could have been passed out. But when the auction played out perfectly, South might well have bid seven diamonds over five spades. North had to be void in spades, and declarer could have either ruffed all of her spade losers or established North’s heart suit. If North had king-high hearts, it would have been just too bad ... unlucky! Here, seven diamonds would have been easy to make.
