Picking up the pet conversation EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar

Time to talk pets again! In late January, I wrote a column requesting reader pet photos. I also asked whether readers would be interested in a pet column. Boy, did readers respond. The photos that accompany this column are a few that I received. We’ll try to run additional photos that were sent in as part of our weekly Neighbors section, which runs on Fridays. Glynn Wade, a “cat lover and retired writer,” wrote in with some thoughts on the column idea. “Just a little feedback in response to your ‘Editor’s Notebook’ column ... requesting feedback on the idea of including pet news/features in the KC Chronicle,” Glynn wrote. “I’ve been a subscriber for the past seven years, and I would definitely enjoy this type of news. With the abundance of bad news these days, photos and features on beloved pets can bring a much-needed break, reminding us of the little loving hearts that await us at home. “Information on pet health and well-being is welcome. Animals always need to be adopted from shelters, and pet-centered news could occasionally feature a possible adoption candidate. So I say, go for it. I hope you get a warm and positive response!” Other readers also sent in feedback that supported the column idea. We now plan to explore the idea further. In other pet happenings, the Kane County Chronicle currently is hosting its Cutest Pet Contest. Through end of day Sunday, readers who want to enter the contest can submit of photo of their pet at shawurl.com/ cutepet. Round one of voting will take place from March 10 to 16. Those votes will determine the top 10 pets, after which a final round of voting will start March 17 and end March 27. The winner of the contest will receive a pet-related gift package. In addition, the top three pet photos will be featured in the Chronicle. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate. One photo submission per person is allowed.

Linda Biesecker of Geneva took this photo of her cat, Ella, with a friend’s dog, Maggie. “Ella has since passed away,” Linda wrote, “but I’ll always be glad I took this picture. She loved when her friend Maggie came to visit.”

Reader Jim Ledbetter writes: “I own no pets now, knowing full well the amount of time and effort required to be there for them. Maybe when I slow down more. In past lives, I have owned cats, dogs, a squirrel monkey once, but no longer. My first pet, unofficial since my mom did not approve, was a mutt I brought home from my paper [route] when his folks abandoned him and moved away. Here he is with my younger sister, taken many years ago.”

Dawn Malone of St. Charles sent in this photo of Loki, “a retired therapy dog who used to do Reading with Rover at many local area libraries,” she wrote. Maple Park resident Kim Shaver shares this photo of her kitten, Stanley. “My son Jake and his girlfriend, Ally, surprised me with him!” she wrote. “He was about 5 weeks old here. He was named by my daughter, Brittany, who loves the Blackhawks. That is where the name came from – Lord Stanley after the Stanley Cup!”

Mama Great Horned Owl has returned An arrow points toward the distinctive feather tufts of a female great horned owl incubating her brood inside a great blue heron’s nest. The tufts aid in camouflage, helping to break up the outline of her head.

GOOD NATURED

Pam Erickson Otto She’s ba-ack. Our neighbor, that is. The quiet one who keeps to herself. I don’t mean to sound like we’re disrespectful, or unobservant, but frankly it took us a while to notice her. Only within the past few weeks has it become apparent that, indeed, Mama Great Horned Owl has returned. Here at Hickory Knolls we are blessed with not only our own 130-acre natural area, but also the large open expanses of land at the Illinois Youth Center, aka the St. Charles boys home, next door. Over the course of the year, all sorts of wildlife are drawn to this vast, undeveloped space. Some, like the great blue herons, are quite obvious. Each spring they come back to their rookery – a collection of, I believe, seven nests in the oak trees by the boys home pond. Amid much flapping and squawking, they spruce up their nests and set about the business of raising their young. But Mama Owl, well, her return is a completely different story. After she and her mate complete their courtship rituals – who-whooing their way through November and December – they both turn down the volume and start setting up housekeeping. For this particular pair, that means returning to exactly the same area – the rookery – and choosing a heron nest to call their own. That in itself isn’t all that unique, at least not for great horned owls – or actually even for owls in general. As a group, these birds of prey adopt existing structures

and adapt them for use as nesting sites. It could be a nest of a squirrel or crow; it could be a large tree cavity. It could also be the unoccupied nest of a red-tailed hawk. Or a heron. As long as it’s large enough and sturdy enough to support the female, her eggs and, eventually, owlets, it’ll do. At any rate, once the nest is chosen, the owls grow quiet. Even though they are nearly invincible – a nickname for great horned owls is flying tigers – their eggs and offspring are vulnerable. It’s best to not attract attention, and believe you me, great horned owls definitely don’t. What works great for them can make things a little tough for us. Each year, starting in January, we trek out to the spot on our property where we can view, with either binoculars or spotting scope, the trees that are maybe 75 yards away. Standing just so, often squinting, we see the outlines of the nests – large masses of sticks arranged high in the trees. This year Miss Jeanette, our outreach coordinator, made regular checks of the area with her Wednesday morning walking group, the

Happy Hikers. It was toward the end of January that she came back with a report of a possible owl sighting. Using two fingers from each hand and sticking them up behind her head, to simulate the namesake feather tufts that jut from the top of a great horned, Jeanette said, “I think I see her.” She then added that she couldn’t be positive because what she perceived as feather tufts might also just be twigs from the nest projecting up at similar angles. [Fun fact: Those feathers are often mistaken for ears. Owl ears, however, are located on either side of the head, much like human ears, but without any outward structures. The tufts serve purposes that range from communication to camouflage, but have nothing to do with hearing.] As the weeks progressed, Jeanette stepped up her nest monitoring, bringing along binoculars to better see the stick-tufts. Three weeks ago she confirmed that, indeed, they were feathers. Even better, they were attached to Mama Owl, who remained steadfast in her mission to keep her eggs warm.

Two weeks ago, Jeanette recruited our coworker, Denis, and his spotting scope, and they were able to see not only the feather tufts, but also Mama’s eyes, staring back at them. Last week, Mama was sitting noticeably higher in the nest, which indicates that her brood had hatched and are growing. Papa Owl has not yet been sighted, but likely is in the area. His job is to provision his family with protein-rich meals – mice, voles, rabbits and whatever else his sharp vision and keen hearing can detect. I would guess that in the coming weeks we’ll be able to get a sense of just how many owlets are in the nest. They’ll continue to eat and grow throughout the month of March, and in April will begin “branching” – leaving the nest to perch on branches and stretch and flex their wings. By the end of April – as the herons are readying their nests – the owls will no longer be living in the structure. But they’ll still be close by. It takes much of the summer for owl parents to show their offspring the finer points of survival in the wild. If you’d like a chance to see them now, and watch them grow, come on over to Hickory Knolls. We can direct you to the area where viewing is best. Mind you, it is quite a distance from the nest, and with those fences in the way the line of sight isn’t perfect. But with binoculars or a spotting scope, you can see their activity pretty well. Take a cue from Mama Owl. Stay quiet and keep to yourself. You – and she – will be glad you did.

COVER STORY GOP primary offers rematch between Russell, Tiballi By ASHLEY SLOBODA

asloboda@shawmedia.com Voters could soon determine whether Kane County will have a new coroner come December. The March 15 Republican primary pits incumbent Rob Russell against Dr. Bob Tiballi. They last faced each other in the 2012 primary. Tiballi asserts his medical background, experience running a medical practice in Elgin and recently earned Master of Business Administration make him the best qualified candidate. He characterized Russell as incompetent, adding the coroner has shown “repeated poor judgment.” Russell, who previously worked as a sergeant with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, said he inherited a “cesspool” from his predecessor Chuck West. West had been charged with official misconduct but died before the case went to trial. “I jumped into the pond to remove the pollutants,” Russell said of addressing issues requiring immediate attention. Russell’s accomplishments include

Other contested county races on the primary ballot include auditor, board chairman and two board member seats. Visit KCChronicle.com/election-central for more information about the March 15 primary earning accreditation from the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners, making it the first coroner’s office in Illinois to do so. He noted that the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has also achieved accreditation – albeit from another organization – and said that shows “we’re doing the right thing.” Minimizing the accreditation, Tiballi instead criticized Russell for not knowing what his office’s light switches control. He was referencing a 2014 incident in which an unmarked switch was flipped, turning off refrigeration units containing blood and body tissue samples.

Sandy Bressner – sbressner@ shawmedia.com

If elected, Tiballi said he would address why the office has a vehicle for nearly every employee. “Why are we paying for six vehicles?” he asked. The vehicles are necessary for the removal of bodies, and not having enough can lead to overtime issues, Russell said. Without the vehicles, the office would have to pay for a removal service, which he said would be more expensive. In dealing with families, Tiballi said

he would approach them the way he would want to be approached. He said he understands what it’s like “to be on the other side” because he has had close friends and family members die in accidents. Through surveys, Russell said he knows people are satisfied with their experience at the coroner’s office. But, he said, better facilities are needed, as the building’s failings include no place for people to grieve.

Martinez, Shoemaker give voters choice in Democratic county coroner primary By ASHLEY SLOBODA

asloboda@shawmedia.com Two North Aurora men are giving voters an option in the Democratic primary race for Kane County coroner. Both men have sought voters’ support before. In 2012, Tom Martinez – who then went by the first name Tao – lost to Republican Rob Russell in the general election. In 2000, John Shoemaker was defeated by Republican Chuck West in the general election for coroner. West later was charged with official misconduct during his tenure but died before the case went to trial. Shoemaker said Russell is more professional than West, but the fighting with the County Board is identical. “What has to change is the leadership,” said Shoemaker, who has a background in nursing and has held such positions as Aurora Township highway commissioner and former township trustee. He said he provides leadership and knows what it means to work with others. His first term as trustee involved serving on a Republican-dominated

As coroner, Martinez – who owns a company that specializes in the field of decontamination and restoration of biohazard environments as a result of deaths and accidents – said he would lead with integrity, dignity and respect. “I’ll bring a kind heart to the coroner’s office of Kane County,” he said.

Martinez criticized Russell’s handling of the office’s finances, including his staff’s wages. He would establish a fixed administrative budget and a fluctuating forensic budget, he said, adding he would also want to schedule the coroner’s deputies among three shifts. Shoemaker said the coroner’s office will move toward a more efficient

budget under his management – for example, he wouldn’t spend money on tchotchkes or extraneous items – but he recognized union contracts could present obstacles regarding that goal. Although he wouldn’t physically be in the office 24/7, Shoemaker said he would be available around the clock,

Candidates weigh in on Kane County credit card controversy On the web

By BRENDA SCHORY

bschory@shawmedia.com Republican candidates in the March 15 primary are weighing in on an ongoing controversy regarding the use of a Kane County-issued credit card used by Coroner Rob Russell. Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen criticized Russell’s use of a county-issued credit card and said it was a reason for needing a stronger policy. Lauzen suggested that if the county cannot legally have a stricter policy, then a solution would be not to issue any county credit cards to officeholders and department heads at all. A proposal for a more strict policy was removed from an agenda this week, following a letter from Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon cautioning that it would be largely illegal and exceeds the County Board’s authority. McMahon’s opinion and previous opinions of Illinois attorneys general, state that, “It is clear that the County Board cannot exercise direct control over purchase made by …. officers who have been granted internal control au-

Hopefuls field questions at the League of Women Voters forum By BRENDA SCHORY

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two Republicans and two Democrats are seeking their party’s nomination in the March 15 primary in the 6th Congressional District. Democrats Amanda Howland of Lake Zurich and Robert Marshall of Burr Ridge are vying for their party’s nomination, while Republican Gordon “Jay” Kinzler of Glen Ellyn is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton. The candidates fielded questions for about 90 minutes Thursday at the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County, held at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles. About 30 people attended. As they all hope to unseat Roskam, each made a case this week for why they would do a better job in Congress than the five-term conservative Roskam, who did not attend Howland, a lawyer, is a former teacher. Marshall and Kinzler are both doctors. “I am absolutely disgusted with what’s been going on with both sides,” Howland said, regarding the gridlock between Democrats and Republicans. “The middle class has been kind of left in the lurch. Opportunities for all of us – for education and for growth and for having a livable wage and being able to provide for our families and have our children be better off than we were – has just gone down the drain.” Howland said that as a mediator, she would get both sides to agree on moving the country forward. Howland also called out Roskam for refusing to meet with her, as a trustee for the College of Lake County, along with the board president and college president, who all went to Washington, D.C., recently. “He, for the sixth out of seven years, refused to meet with us,” Howland said. “We met with every-

Marshall, a Vietnam veteran, said he was running because he was opposed to “all these wars we are involved in.” “We made the same mistake in [Iraq] that we did in Vietnam,” Marshall said. “We have to call an end to it. We must withdraw our troops and end our involvement there.” Marshall said continuing military action in the Middle East radicalizes young people “and that is why they terrorize our country with suicide bombers and suicide killers.” Marshall also called for an end to the war on drugs as a failure that has cost the nation billions. Marshall called for legalizing marijuana nationally, seeing whether a single-payer health system would be feasible and addressing income inequality. “A small number of people control more than 50 percent of our

wealth in this country,” Marshall said. “You give them unlimited power to spend as much as they want on political campaigns, and you’ve lost your democracy. It’s an oligarchy.” Kinzler is a transplant surgeon who is president of the medical staff at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, the Glen Ellyn Park District Board president and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. “If I’m elected, my plans would be to strengthen our military … strengthen our borders and improve our health care system,” Kinzler said. Also criticizing the incumbent, Kinzler said Roskam gets most of his campaign donations from banks and corporations outside the district. “Why [is he] getting so much money and giving so much influence to people who don’t even live in our district? “ Kinzler said. Kinzler criticized Roskam’s voting record, saying it doesn’t reflect “most of the values of the people in our district … so I decided to take on this … career politician.” Specifically, Kinzler said Roskam takes credit for “cracking down” on the IRS by cutting funding. “That was in 2011 during the sequester,” Kinzler said. “In the last omnibus bill, which he voted for, he increased funding to the IRS by $290 million. Video of the forum will be broadcast on BATV.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland School District 302 is among 15 school districts statewide that have been named to the AP Honor Roll, according to a press release from the Illinois State Board of Education. The honor roll recognizes districts that increase access to College Board Advanced Placement coursework while also increasing the percentage of students earning scores of at least 3 or higher on AP exams, the release said. Other districts that achieved the honor roll distinction include Aurora West School District 129, Huntley School District 158 and Sycamore School District 427, according to the release. The release indicated Kaneland has achieved the honor for multiple years. According to the release, Illinois is 11th in the nation for the percentage of 2015 graduates who scored at least a 3 on AP exams during their high school career. Illinois’ average is 25 percent, while the national average is 22.4 percent, the release states. “Illinois continues to move up the

Scores of 3 or higher demonstrate students are capable of doing the work of an introductory-level course in a particular subject in college, the release said. The release said a new law requires all public universities and public community colleges in Illinois to award college credit to students with AP exam scores of 3 or higher beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

Meteorologist: Warmer weather heading to Kane County By AL LAGATTOLLA

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Kane County residents hoping for warmer weather likely will not have a long wait, according to Michael Carter, a meteorologist with The Weather Network. Carter, discussing the network’s spring forecast for the Kane County area, said “we are not expecting winter temperatures to outstay their welcome.” A warmup starts this weekend, with a high of 51 expected for Sunday as of Friday morning. A high of 57 was forecast for Monday, and on Tuesday, the forecast high was 63. He said residents can expect above-normal temperatures for most of March. “The story this year is that you’ll definitely be on pace, if not ahead of pace, for the spring warmup,” Carter said. Once the warmup begins Sunday, he said it was unlikely there would be more bitterly cold weather this season. He added that didn’t necessarily mean there would not be any more additional snow. “We can’t really close the door yet on winter,” he said. “You can’t rule out one last parting shot.” Carter said the area is emerging from

A member of the Batavia Woman’s Club utilizes Elderday for her own mother and nominated the center to be the recipient of the fundraiser this year. And after a tour of Elderday Center – which did take place before the surprise announcement was made – Jones said she was happy for the nonprofit. “We’re excited to pick Elderday,” she said. “We thought it was a great organization.” To learn more, visit bataviawomansclub.org or elderdaycenter.org.

editorial@kcchronicle.com

BATAVIA – The Batavia Woman’s Club recently stopped by Elderday Center in Batavia for a tour. At least, that’s what Elderday Center staff members believed was happening. Members of the club were there, in fact, to announce that Elderday Center – a nonprofit adult day care center – will be the beneficiary of the group’s historically profitable fashion show fundraiser this fall. Last year, the club raised nearly $15,000 through the fundraiser. The event includes a fashion show with models displaying clothing from local retailers, a luncheon, a silent auction, raffles and more. When Jill Jones, president of the Batavia Woman’s Club, and her colleagues explained to Elderday Center Executive Director Traci Dunne and her co-workers that they hoped to write the center a check for at least $10,000 this fall, the women were shocked, Jones said, laughing. “We were absolutely stunned,” Dunne said. “My co-worker described it best when she held out her hand and was visibly shaking [after hearing the news]. We are so incredibly blessed by the generosity and support of our community… not only the funding, but the heart behind it.” Dunne said every dollar Elderday Center receives from the fashion show

The funding comes at a very opportune time. Elderday Center depends on support not only from grants, but from state funding. Unfortunately, said Dunne, the center hasn’t seen a payment for state-funded clients since June 2015. “A lot of [places] like Elderday have had to close because they just haven’t had the funding,” Jones said. “[But] they’ll get the money from [our fashion show] this fall.”

New band uniforms considered in Kaneland

School board gives officials approval to seek bids By AL LAGATTOLLA

alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board this week provided a green light for School District 302 officials to seek public bids for the purchase of new marching band uniforms. The board vote was unanimous, but the action was not an approval for the

new uniforms. A vote on that would come after district officials receive bids and provide details to board members. Denise Blaszynski, president of the Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters, stated in an email that the marching band “is desperately in need of new uniforms.” “The current uniforms are between 10 and 15 years old, many with rips, tears or simply worn out,” Blaszynski wrote. “Thanks to the outstanding leadership of [band director] Aaron Puckett, the band program has grown tremendously in recent years and won’t have enough uniforms for next year’s marching band. The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters will be con-

tributing a portion of the funds toward the purchase of the new uniforms.” Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs provided estimates on what the purchase would cost and how the district intends to pay for the uniforms. The cost is anticipated to be about $70,000 for 150 uniforms. Fuchs stated in an email that the cost of one uniform is about $460. According to documents provided by district officials, $40,000 of the cost would be covered by delaying the purchase of large instruments. Also, the district would delay the purchase of a vehicle that would replace one currently used for driver’s education. The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters would be asked to contribute $3,500.

“I do appreciate that we are trying to move things around and keep the numbers down,” school board member Ryan Kerry said. In addition, Ben Westfall, who cochairs the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s Folks On Spokes community bicycling event, said proceeds from this year’s event would go toward the purchase of the band uniforms. Fuchs stated that the current uniforms are about 15 years old. Also, she stated the number of high school students is likely to grow by about 60 students in the next school year, and several students have indicated they are interested in joining the band. “We do not have enough band uniforms,” Fuchs said at the meeting.

Geneva police chief, city administrator to retire By BRENDA SCHORY

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – City officials announced the retirements of both Geneva City Administrator Mary McKittrick and Police Chief Steve Mexin on Friday. City officials announced the moves in separate news releases. McKittrick will retire from the city after 17 years, effective June 10, and Mexin will retire, effective May 6, after Mary more than 26 years with McKittrick the city, according to the releases. Mexin and McKittrick served eight years in their current leadership roles. Both decided to retire to spend more time Steve Mexin with their families, according to the releases. Both are expected to publicly announce their retirements at the next City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Mon-

day at Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva. Mayor Kevin Burns is expected to appoint Stephanie Dawkins to replace McKittrick as city administrator, and Cmdr. Eric Passarelli to replace Mexin as police chief, according to the release. Dawkins is currently assistant city administrator/director of administrative services. Aldermen will consider Burns’ appointments. Burns praised both McKittrick and Mexin for their long service to the city. “Mary has helped shepherd Geneva to a new level of sophistication and established practices and policies in a culture that helped us withstand an unpredictable economic environment,” Burns said. “And we are better off for having had her with us for 17 years.” McKittrick was hired as the city’s first assistant city administrator to former City Administrator Phil Page. She served in that capacity for nine years, Burns said.

President (R): Rubio Donald Trump enters Illinois’ March 15 primary as the clear front runner for the GOP nomination for president. He’s dominated most of the primaries and caucuses to date, and has significant leads over his rivals in national polling. While he’s in a strong position, Trump, a billionaire real estate tycoon and reality TV star, still is no guarantee to secure the nomination. Because of the number of candidates in the field, it’s possible none of the Republican presidential hopefuls will have won the required number of delegates to secure the nomination entering the July 18 start of the GOP convention in Cleveland. And because Trump is such a polarizing candidate, that could lead to a brokered convention in which delegates are able to change their votes to a different candidate after the first ballot. Needless to say, this is a vital election year for the country. That’s why Illinois voters should press the reset button on the Republican nomination process. Trump’s candidacy is rooted in negativity and preys on the understandable anger of frustrated voters. We understand why voters would welcome a candidate from outside traditional political channels, but Trump is not the answer. He is that angry email you want to send but really shouldn’t. He is that nasty phone message you want to leave but will always regret. Trump is a bully who’s more apt to name-call and belittle than to discuss policy in any detail. He offers little in the way of substance or leadership. His plan to build a 1,000-mile-long wall along the Mexican border that’s at least 30 feet tall or taller to keep illegal immigrants out of the U.S., and also to have Mexico pay for it – his most specific policy message, by the way – is, well, laughable. And let’s face it. Trump isn’t a true Republican. He’s supported liberals and liberal causes throughout his career. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas also is not the answer. Like Trump, Cruz is a divider, not a uniter. A far-right-wing conservative, Cruz cannot attract the independent voters needed to win a general election against the Democratic nominee. He is beholden to big oil and among the staunchest deniers of the science of climate change. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has the best chance to unite the party and lead it in a new direction. He was elected to the Senate as a tea-party candidate but also has worked closely with members of the Republican establishment. The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio can expand the party’s base among Latinos. Rubio is a policy wonk who focuses on solutions rather than problems. He delivers an uplifting message about America’s potential and is an advocate for smaller government – he would reduce all federal spending to 2008 levels except for defense. He supports overhauling what he calls America’s outdated educational system, including increasing vocational training. He supports some sort of legal status for undocumented workers, but only after U.S. borders are secure. He wants to reform the federal tax code and cap economic regulations. Ohio Gov. John Kasich also remains in the race. We endorse Rubio for the Republican nomination for U.S. president.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

ENDORSEMENT

President (D): Clinton

Hillary Clinton regained control of the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president after the South Carolina and Super Tuesday primaries. The fact that Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont made this such a tight contest to begin with says as much about Clinton as it does about Sanders. Frankly, the former first lady has lost the trust of many Democratic voters. That’s despite the fact that Clinton arguably has the most experience of any of the candidates running for president, Democrat or Republican. She was an active participant during her husband’s – former President Bill Clinton’s – eight years in the White House. She served as a U.S. senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, when she was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. secretary of state, a position she held until 2013. That’s not a bad résumé. But Clinton’s baggage holds her back. The State Department continues to investigate Clinton’s use of a private, unsecure email server to conduct official business while she was secretary of state, many of the emails containing classified information. Then there’s the matter of the Clinton Foundation. While Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, her husband was seeking millions of dollars in donations from for-

eign interests that had business before the State Department. Conflict of interest? Clinton’s role in the delayed American response to the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, leading to the deaths of four Americans, including the ambassador to Libya, has come under heavy scrutiny. And Clinton’s transparency has come into question over her refusal to release transcripts or recordings of her controversial, paid speeches to big banks. In the meantime, Wall Street is pouring big money into her campaign. Sanders, Clinton’s opponent, is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist. His radical economic agenda is dangerous. Sanders wants to raise taxes, particularly on the wealthy. He wants government to pay for just about everything and take care of everyone. How? By taking from the rich. Sanders doesn’t think the Affordable Care Act goes far enough. He prefers a single payer system using Medicare. Sanders wants the federal government – taxpayers – to pay for two years of “free” college tuition for every graduating high school senior in the country. Did we mention that Sanders’ economic agenda is dangerous? This is more an endorsement against Sanders than it is for Clinton, but for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president, we recommend Clinton.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

SOUND OFF Democrats want total chaos

Everyone knows Illinois is a financial mess. We are broke. We have the worst credit rating of the 50 states. We have billions of dollars in debt we can’t pay. The Democrats created this problem. They have been in control and continually overspent, and now they want to blame the governor for its problems they created. The Democrats refuse to be realistic about a current budget. They recently submitted a budget that calls for billions of dollars more spending than projected revenue. So Democrats want to go further in debt. Actually, all of this is a power play. The Democrats want total chaos, and then blame the governor so he won’t be re-elected. The Democrats don’t want a resolution. The worse it gets, the more they like it. It’s all about getting a Democratic governor and having total control. It’s not about citizens or what’s good for Illinois. If that were not true, the Democrats would work with the governor and accept the fact that things must change. Michael Madigan is not about to cooperate with a Republican.

The three stooges

What do you think? Did you watch the Republican debate [a while back]? I, for one, was disappointed in the actions of the big three. They reminded me of a

comedy act on TV. I will tell you at the end of my statement. I can imagine all of the countries who watched must have been holding their sides from laughing so hard. The pain must have been terrible. The liberals who prepared the questions must have known what they were doing. The big three fell for it. As I see it, they were egged on by the liberals, and it worked, except for the remaining two candidates [on stage] – Carson and Kasich. They were smart enough to act like men who respected the position of being the president of the USA. I choose Kasich as president and Carson as vice president, instead of any of the three stooges. Hillary or Bernie could win on the November election, if the Republican party doesn’t wise up. Bye, for now.

Comic question

Dear Kane County Chronicle, is there any chance of bringing back the “Real Life Adventure” comic? I have been a long-term subscriber, and I really miss that comic. And would love to see it return. Thank you, bye.

A great message

Visiting my taxman in the Fox Valley, he said something very profound about his Christian faith. He said: “I follow my faith because it works. It has kept me

out of trouble.” I find that to be a great message (a bumper sticker). Believe in Judeo-Christian rules because they work. “THEY WORK.” What a great way to explain the reason to live by the Ten Commandments.

Unbelievable

Jason Van Dyke pleading not guilty? Unbelievable. ... Not guilty? Unbelievable.

He has a right

Yes, good morning. Just over the weekend Ted Cruz told the media and told the public, that Donald Trump needs to disown or disavow David Duke, who is a white supremacist, his vote. And he’s made a big splash on the news about why Donald Trump should do that. That this guy’s a bigot. But you know what, when you point a finger at somebody else, three fingers are pointing back at you. This country was founded on religious freedom, and freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. Everybody, including David Duke, including Al Sharpton, including all of the racist people, including all of the religious people who are totally intolerant of other religions, have a right to vote for the candidate of their choice in the USA. Lawsuit seeks payment from teens in park district vandalism case

Hill’s Country Store to hold project for Epilepsy Awareness

By ASHLEY SLOBODA

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The teenagers accused of vandalizing St. Charles Park District property might have to pay for the damage. William Donlevy, Kyle Wandle and Nicholas Zamecnik – who were charged with felonies in connection with the Dec. 19 incidents at James O. Breen Com- Kyle Wandle munity Park and Otter Cove Aquatic Park – now face a separate court matter regarding restitution. The St. Charles Park District has insurance coverage with PDRMA Property and Casualty, which is suing the teens for $17,478.92 plus costs

of the suit, according to Kane County court records. Additionally, the lawsuit states, PDRMA Property and Casualty “reserves its right to William claim further payments Donlevy which may be made under said policy.” The lawsuit asserts Wandle, 19, and Donlevy and Zamecnik, both 18, “willfully and intentionally caused damage to buildings Nicholas and equipment” owned Zamecnik by the park district. The filing characterized the damage as extensive. St. Charles police have said video surveillance captured their actions,

which reportedly led to broken doors, windows, computer monitors, printers, refrigerators and a lightning detection system. Other organizations with offices on the property were affected, police have said. Minutes from the Jan. 12 St. Charles Park District Board meeting indicated Campton United Soccer Club planned to install additional surveillance at the site. A park commissioner also asked staff to get quotes on burglar alarms for a few facilities. The restitution case is next expected in court April 14. In addition to the St. Charles case, Donlevy, Wandle and Zamecnik – along with a fourth teen, Jacob Principato – face charges connected to burglaries in Campton Hills.

KANEVILLE – Hill’s Country Store will be participating in the Great Purple Cupcake Project for Epilepsy Awareness. It takes place from Sunday through March 13 at the store, which is at 2S133 Harter Road, Kaneville. CLASS 4A ST. CHARLES EAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: ST. CHARLES EAST 58, BATAVIA 41

SAINTS MARCH ON

Fast start leads East to first regional title since 2006-07 By CHRIS CASEY

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – There wasn’t a question of whether St. Charles East was confident in its game plan heading into Friday night’s IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional championship against top-seeded Batavia. But not even the Saints could have imagined that game plan going as well as it did. East had control from start to finish and cruised to a 58-41 victory over the Bulldogs to win the boys basketball program’s first regional title since the 200607 season. “We’re playing our best basketball right now, and that’s the key,” East coach Pat Woods said. “You have to play your best basketball in March and I thought this was one of, if not our best game of the season. No better time than now, really. You have to take these games each one at a time and just survive and advance.” Before it could blink, Batavia trailed, 9-0, as Saints junior Zach Mitchell scored seven early points to force a full timeout from Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos at the 5:01 mark of the first quarter. On its home court, East (17-12) got the perfect start when, in turn, the Bulldogs got the exact start they couldn’t afford. “We knew if we came out strong and hit them early, we had a chance to put them away early,” East senior Evan DiLeonardi said. “It was quite a bit different from Wednesday [against Geneva]. I really never had the feeling that they were going to come back, and that’s a testament to how well we played tonight.” Batavia (20-10) got within 13-9 at the beginning of the second quarter, but DiLeonardi helped the Saints answer with a 12-0 run. DiLeonardi scored just seven points, but focused in on his primary goal of shutting down Batavia guard Canaan Coffey. The two have played against each other since the sixth grade and DiLeonardi holding Coffey to six points – on 1 of 9 shooting – for the second straight meeting is in part thanks to his knowledge of the standout guard’s game. “Part of it is knowing his game, but sometimes you have to just hope he

There’s no question DiLeonardi and the Saints came out confident from the tipoff all the way through senior Ben Talarczyk’s baseline drive for a dunk late in the fourth quarter with East comfortably ahead. Still, there was a mutual respect, both on the court and benches. Woods knows that his team eliminated one of the better teams and coaches the Saints oppose each season. The Saints split the regular season series with the Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion Bulldogs, but East claimed Friday’s rubber match. “I have so much respect for what coach Nazos does with that program,” Woods said. “They had a terrific season and there’s nothing about tonight that should take that away from them.” “St. Charles East is a very good team,” Nazos said. “They pounced on us early and we had to change the way we play and attack for much of the rest of the game. [East] played really well. They did

They have been through some highs and lows this season, but they are a very talented team.” Although East celebrated senior night before it defeated Batavia, 50-40, on Feb. 24 the Saints played three games on their home court to open the postseason, capping it off with back-to-back victories in which the student section stormed the court. Seniors such as DiLeonardi, Zach Hondlik, J.T. Ford and James McQuillan will remember their final time on the East basketball court for a game as

one that ended in them cutting down the nets. But Mitchell? He’s glad to have another year in front of the Saints’ supporters. “We seriously have the best fans,” Mitchell said. “It was awesome seeing how many of them came out and supported us tonight. They stuck with us, man. We’ve been through a lot this year and had a tough stretch in the middle of the season, but tonight was just awesome.” The Saints advanced to Wednesday’s Rock Valley Sectional semifinal against Prairie Ridge, a 58-38 winner over Rockford Jefferson in the 4A Crystal Lake South Regional. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, will reflect on their season earlier than they had hoped. “Our seniors did so much for this program. No one believed this team could do anything special and what did they do? They were overachievers from Day 1,” Nazos said. “They have a lot to be proud of with what they accomplished this season. Tonight’s loss doesn’t take away from any of that.”

St. Charles East students were rowdy throughout Friday’s Class 4A St. Charles Regional championship win against Batavia. The crowd also included a number of giddy former Saints players.

Former Saints hail elusive hardware QUICK READ Kevin Druley ST. CHARLES – A wall of St. Charles East faculty members subdued the Orange Fever student section for a few brief moments Friday, keeping the peace during the overlap of a boys basketball game ending and bedlam ensuing. But this was the program’s biggest win in nearly a decade, so something had to give. In this case, young legs, young hearts and full-throated voices prevailed. Students joined their muses in saluting East’s 58-41, home-court victory against Batavia for a Class 4A regional championship, prompting the school’s familiar “WE ST. CHARLES, YEAH, YEAH!” chant. Can you believe that rallying cry hasn’t accompanied a Saints regional title since the 2006-07 season? Several athletes who attempted the feat in the interim knew, and their pride only swelled as they watched the celebra-

tion from courtside. “It’s awesome,” said former Saints guard Jake Asquini, a 2015 graduate now playing at Roosevelt University. “Obviously, I didn’t get to win one in my three years and that’s unfortunate for me, but it’s really cool to see these guys finally get to cut down the nets and hold that trophy. It’s really nice to see, and they deserve it. They’ve been working hard.” When he wasn’t directing the Saints’ fast-paced assault on the regional’s top seed and reigning Upstate Eight Conference River Division champs, East coach Pat Woods was sporadically spotting familiar faces in the crowd. Before the game, as with so many others, he read “numerous texts” of well-wishes from players he’s coached. Woods, who has 89 wins at East as he continues his fifth season, remains incredibly humbled, but never surprised. “You know, this is for those guys that had been there and were so close,” Woods said. “Saints family is what we talk about, and I keep in touch with my guys. ... It’s a tight family, and it’s not just for the team here,

it’s for all of us. And that’s the great part about this place.” It’s even better when the past helps cultivate the present and future. Saints junior guard Zach Mitchell, who has fueled the starting five in style in his return from a broken arm suffered during the Saints’ Thanksgiving tournament in November, routinely channels memories of several current and former East players. Senior guard James McQulllan and recent graduates Cole Gentry (2015) and A.J. Washington (2014) are among them. “I’ve been on the bench a few times and got to see how those guys stay composed in big moments, and I’ve tried to incorporate that into my game,” Mitchell said. Washington, who just concluded his two-season run at Elgin Community College, was one of about a dozen former players on hand Friday. He laughed when asked if he still was the same high-flying A.J. Washington – “I am. I am. But I’ve developed a 3-pointer,” he said – before discussing his alma mater in a more serious tone. Reminiscing came easily as the Saints filed exuberantly past Wash-

ington and Co. toward the postgame locker room. “The seniors, they came in as freshmen when I was there,” Washington said, “and to see some of them succeed like this … especially coach Woods, who’s been a great guy for me and still helps me with recruiting to this day and gets me where I need to be. I’m happy to see him win it.” Washington aspires to climb from ECC to the NCAA Division II level. Wherever he lands, his plans don’t include losing contact with Woods and his former teammates. Ditto for Asquini, who firmed up his travel plans for Wednesday’s Rock Valley College Sectional semifinal against Prairie Ridge in a matter of seconds. “I might. We’ll see,” Asquini said when asked if he’d be Rockford-bound. “Maybe for. … Yeah, I probably will. Might as well.”

CLASS 3A KANELAND REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: KANELAND 44, SYCAMORE 40

By CHRIS WALKER

MAPLE PARK – Dylan Vaca was able to get in some extra shooting at an old gym late Thursday evening in Sugar Grove. It appears as if that extra work helped him extend his high school boys basketball career. Vaca followed his own driving basket with a 3-pointer with 3:35 left in Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Kaneland Regional championship against Sycamore, breaking the eighth and final tie, as the Knights held on for a 44-40 victory. The Knights advance to the Class 3A Woodstock North sectional and will face Rockford Boylan on Wednesday in a semifinal game. “I’m so happy for the seniors. All the guys on the team helped them get to this dream,” Knights coach Joe Conroy said. “The kids put in a lifetime of work so this means a great deal to them. That they could celebrate on their home court in front of their fans and friends is utterly amazing.” Vaca’s extra shooting showed in the fourth quarter as he scored nine of his game-high 13 points. He hit a long jumper off a screen with 5:30 left in the game and that seemed to kick his offense into high gear. “I came of that screen and saw that shot and I shoot it all the time in practice. It’s my shot,” Vaca said. “So I took it. Then the 3-pointer was just coming off momentum with the crowd behind me.” Kaneland (20-8) found itself deadlocked at the half at 18-18 but began to pull away in the third quarter, taking its biggest lead of the game at 29-20 midway through the quarter. Sycamore (15-13) wouldn’t give in, though, rallying all the way back to tie it at 31-all after back-to-back baskets by Ty Sulaver early in the fourth quarter, his only field goals of the night. “Their kids made a few more plays down the stretch, but I’m proud of our guys for battling all night long like they did,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “To initially tie it after getting down like that showed their character. We just needed a few more plays down the stretch.” Sulaver’s 3-pointer pulled the Spartans to within 40-38 with 1:47 remaining. They couldn’t force a turnover, so they were forced to foul. Once again, Vaca delivered, swishing both ends of his 1-and-1 to make it a 42-38 game.

We work at this all the time in practice and coach is an intense guy,” Lilly said. “He had us ready for this game, and we believed in each other.” David added 10 points and Ethan Conroy had nine, making 3 of 7 3-pointers. Bemis paced the Spartans with nine points, Tim Zahm had eight and Jack Mizgalski and Sulaver each had seven. Sycamore made 6 of 21 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Knights finished the season undefeated at home. The 20 wins are also notable as they are the most by the program since the 1995 team won 23 games. “That was quite a feat for the seniors, and we had LaSalle-Peru at top on their side (of conference) and they came in and we had DeKalb,” Conroy said. “For us to do what we did, to win a regional and get 20 wins is special. A lot of people think 20 is easy; 20 is not easy.” Neither are regional titles. The Knights earned both.

Blaine, Minnesota native Austen Long purchased a White Sox cap shortly upon joining the Chicago Steel last month, saying, “I just like the hat.” The words sounded an awful lot like, “I just like to hit,” which the feisty forward suggested several times over in the latest edition of the Weekend Chitchat. Bearing resemblance to former White Sox and Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija, Long, 18, discussed his playing style, college commitment and coursework at Geneva. The senior will finish high school there after arriving in a trade from the Tri-City (Nebraska) Storm. Here’s an edited transcript of Long’s conversation with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley:

editorial@kcchronicle.com GLEN ELLYN – For 29 minutes in Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Glenbard South Regional championship game against Glenbard South, the Burlington Central boys basketball team played aggressively on defense and efficiently on offense to build a ninepoint lead. It was the final three minutes, however, that decided the game as Glenbard South’s Povilas Riauba hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Raiders a 60-57 win. Riauba took an inbounds pass from under his own hoop and raced down the court before pulling a stepback move at the 3-point line, causing his defender to fall, before calmly sinking the game-winner. “It’s an easy shot to make when you’re that open,” Riauba said. “At first, I didn’t think I was going to get a good look because he was right on me, but as soon as I got it off, I knew it was a good shot.” Riauba had 15 points, as did fellow senior Billy Bair for the Raiders, while Ryan Fitzgerald had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Rockets. Burlington Central (26-4) led, 5041, with 3:23 remaining after Fitzgerald drained a pair of free throws. From there, Glenbard South (19-9) chipped away by forcing turnovers, and Bair was a beast on the offensive glass with a pair of putbacks in the fi-

The game was tightly contested throughout, as the lead was no larger than four either way until the Rockets went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to nine midway through the fourth quarter. Even with all of the miscues down the stretch, Burlington Central had a chance to win the game with possession in a tie game with 30 seconds left. No doubt you’ve noticed – Kane County is feeling the Bern! “Bernie 2016” signs are popping up in yards all over the Fox Valley, and things are hopping at Bernie Sanders’ Kane and Kendall counties’ headquarters at 144 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia. I’m delighted to be part of the effort to “get out the vote” for Bernie in the March 15 Illinois primary and hope others feeling the Bern will join us in early voting so that we can have all hands on deck to continue door-to door canvassing and phone banking — especially on March 15. We’d love to have you stop by our office to say hello and pick up a sign (going fast!), but – if you can’t – please email me at jenniferdubose@msn.com. Put “BERNIE” in the subject line (or call the office at 630-406-5035 or leave a message for me at 630-945-0240 if you don’t do email), if you’d like to get involved. We need eyes and ears at the polls, too, if poll-watching is more your speed. All hands on deck! It’s go time!

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose There are but few things in my life as a parent that have struck me as such incredible opportunities to help improve the lives and futures of my children and yours besides this man’s bid for the presidency — and I’m certainly not alone. Since we opened our office on Feb. 23, several dozen new volunteers, many of them parents — most whom report never having felt compelled to be politically active outside the voting booth before – have descended upon our little office bearing donations of computers, office supplies and furniture, and have carried away hundreds of signs, now rooted proudly in yards all over Kane

and Kendall counties. Joe Stupec of Aurora, veteran campaigner and yard sale delivery service captain, sees to it that those unable to visit our office get theirs, too. Time, talent, food and fun have all been welcome, and all are needed to fuel the fire of this compassionate revolution. We aim to change the face of American democracy, and the faces behind it truly are beautiful. For me, the most moving thing about this whole experience is the joy I get to see on people’s faces as they come through our door in near disbelief that a Bernie office actually is here! They’ve found their people! Many young people happen past, too, and pop in for visits (and to pitch in on our phone bank), even on weekend nights, and we’re all discovering just how many others in the Fox Valley do in fact share values that include prizing people over profits — who know that the only real way to effectively and with integrity push this agenda

forward is by supporting a candidate who hears us loud and clear. We are not for sale. Sanders will represent us and not the big banks and corporations all investing in other candidate’s campaigns. Come to our campaign headquarters for a rally at 10 a.m. today, when we’ll all get fired up with a visit from local progressive and former Batavia School District 101 history teacher John Dryden (also a current school board member), and we’ll school you on the art of canvassing door-to door go.berniesanders.com/page/event/ manage/4g9). Then off into the wild you’ll go – buttons on your lapel, walklists in hand and fire in your belly – ready to spread Bernie love! We can do this but not without your help! Are you ready? Seize the day, people!

A savory bread pudding from Duff Goldman great for a home cook’s repertoire TOM’S COOKBOOK LIBRARY Tom Witom “Duff Bakes” (William Morrow), by Duff Goldman, offers home cooks – both new and seasoned – lively insights into his expertise as a professional baker. Readers will find 135 practical recipes, from the perfect muffin and easy pizza dough to a variety of cakes, cookies and bread, as well as some fun cake decorating projects too challenge them. Goldman, who studied pastries at the Culinary Institute of America, served as Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes” for 10 seasons and now hosts “Duff Till Dawn.” He also owns Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as a bakery/ hands-on decorating studio in Los Angeles. The cookbook was written with Sara Gonzales, head baker and kitchen manager for Goldman’s Charm City Cakes West in L.A. In the brief introduction, Goldman likens baking to playing music “in that both require harmony to have quality.” He further observes:

“Baking is a craft like any other that you discover for yourself every time you do it. It’s the perpetual excitement at seeing what you bake when it comes out of the oven.” Goldman’s recipe (below) for Savory Bread Pudding with Bacon, Leeks and Mushrooms is a tasty dish that home cooks will want to add to their repertoire and return to time and again.

Savory Bread Pudding with Bacon, Leeks and Mushrooms (Makes one 9-by-12-inch pan)

• 7 cups 1- to 1∏-in. cubes of dayold brioche or challah • 6 bacon strips, diced • 1⁄4 cup olive oil • 6 leeks, washed well, white and light green parts sliced • 2 garlic cloves, minced • ∏ lb. shiitake mushrooms, sliced • Leaves from 2 thyme sprigs, chopped • 1 tsp. kosher salt • 2 tsp. freshly cracked black pepper • 1⁄4 cup chopped fresh parsley • 6 extra-large eggs • 1-∏ cups heavy cream • 1-∏ cups chicken stock. • 8 oz. Gruyere cheese, grated (1-∏ cups) • 2 oz. Parmesan cheese grated

Photo provided

“Duff Bakes” by Duff Goldman includes 135 recipes. Goldman, who studied pastries at the Culinary Institute of America, served as Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes” for 10 seasons and now hosts “Duff Till Dawn.” (1-1⁄3 cups) Dry out the bread by spreading it on one or two rimmed baking sheets and putting them in a 350 F degree oven for 12 minutes. Set aside. In a large saute pan over medium

heat, cook the bacon in the olive oil for 6 minutes, or until crispy. Add the leeks and garlic and saute about 10 minutes, or until the leeks are tender. Add the mushrooms, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper and cook until the mushrooms start to soften and the liquid starts to evaporate, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the parsley. In a big bowl, whisk the eggs, cream, chicken stock and two-thirds of the cheeses. Add the bread cubes and mushroom mixture to the bowl and gently fold to coat the bread evenly. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes, stir again, and let it sit for another 20 minutes so that the bread has a chance to soak up plenty of liquid. Preheat the oven to 350 F degrees. Spread the bread pudding into the baking dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheeses. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes, then serve warm.

How to prevent ear pain on planes Dear Dr. K: I get pain in my ears every time I fly and the plane descends for landing. A friend says chewing gum works for him, but it doesn’t work for me. What can I do? Dear Reader: The ear pain you experience –barotrauma of the ear – is the most common medical problem reported by air travelers. “Barotrauma” refers to injuries caused by increased air pressure. Here’s why it happens. Your ear has three parts: the outer ear (including the ear canal), the middle ear and the inner ear. The eardrum comes between the outer ear and the middle ear. The middle ear is connected to the uppermost part of your throat (called the nasopharynx) by a thin canal called the Eustachian tube. Air constantly is moving through the Eustachian tube and into the middle ear. This balances the pressures in your middle and inner ears. Air pressure changes as the altitude changes. Therefore, the biggest changes occur when a plane is taking off or landing. While the plane has systems to reduce the sudden changes that occur during takeoff and landing, some still occur. When a plane’s air pressure changes suddenly and the Eustachian tube is blocked, it can create a vacuum in the middle ear that pulls the eardrum inward. This can cause pain. It also can muffle sounds. In more severe cases, the middle ear can fill with clear fluid. In the most severe cases, the eardrum can rupture. Fortunately, this is rare. Barotrauma is much more likely if you’re flying with a cold, infection or allergies. That’s because these conditions can block the Eustachian tube. So that’s what causes the problem you asked about. Now, what can you do about

SUDOKU

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff it?

First, take a decongestant one hour before your flight or use a decongestant nasal spray, or both. Since your ear problems come when the plane is landing, use the spray about 30 minutes before the plane is scheduled to land. Antihistamines may also help if you have allergies. If you experience the symptoms of barotrauma during a flight, try the following before the symptoms worsen. For most people, landing is worse than takeoff. The easiest tricks to try are: • Suck on hard candy. • Yawn and swallow frequently. Open your mouth very wide, as if you were yawning. Swallow, even though there’s nothing in your throat to swallow. When you do this, you tighten the muscles in the back of your throat. That tugs on the opening of the Eustachian tube and opens it. You often can feel and hear the tube pop open. If these methods don’t work, pinch your nose closed, inhale through your mouth, and then try to push the air out through your nose while keeping it pinched shut. Don’t push hard, and stop as soon as one ear pops. If you blow too hard, you can tear your eardrums, so do it carefully. One of these tricks should work for most people who have ear problems while flying – and I’ll bet one will work for you.

CROSSWORD

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY wife and I have been married 20 Jeanne years and have Phillips three children, ages 10 to 17. Our oldest is a senior in high school. Her best friend, “Maya,” is a friend of the family we have known for 10 years. Maya’s parents have been divorced for as long as we’ve known her. She lives with her single mom. Her dad moved out of state. Maya spends a lot of time with us on weekends, and we all have embraced her as another family member. Recently, Maya pulled me aside and asked if I could be a father figure in her life. I was honored and immediately agreed. Now when she comes over she calls me “Dad” and even says “I love you.” I say it back. Last week, my wife mentioned our younger two children have noticed the bond between me and Maya and are upset about it. How can I be there for Maya through these tough teen years without alienating my own younger kids? – your younger children and explaining to them that the more love there is in this world, the better our world will be. Explain that Maya has no father in her life, and any affection you express for her does not lessen the love you feel for them, and they always will be “No. 1” in your heart. This does not, however, mean you cannot have love for Maya, too, and say it. If you haven’t already been doing it, make special time for your younger children that does not include Maya. Dear Abby: Allow me to offer a word of encouragement to young boys who are short in stature: All your life, you will hear thoughtless remarks about your height. “He’s short. That’s so sad. It will hold him back in life. He’ll have trouble with girls,” and so on. Don’t listen to a word of it. I am now a senior citizen. Not once has being short held me back from anything I wanted in life – relationships, money, career, friends and respect. Other people may have stereotypes, but do not let them control your goals and dreams. – Mike In California Dear Mike: There is no height requirement for success. As I write this I am thinking of Prince, Elton John, Michael J. Fox, Kevin Hart, Danny DeVito and every jockey who races for the Triple Crown. Dear Abby: I’m 18 and have never had a boyfriend. I really, really like a boy from church, but I don’t know how to approach him. He has a job and is in his second year of college. We’re good friends, but he’s so busy with work and school I never see him, not even on Sundays. It’s upsetting. What should I do? –

Crushing In Indiana Dear Crushing: Because of the schedule he is

on, I don’t think you have much choice other than to wait until his classes end and he’s on holiday or summer break. In the meantime, do not put your life on hold. Stay busy with friends and other activities, and who knows? You may meet somebody else who’s also interesting. • Write Dear Abby at www.dearabby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.

Dr. Wallace: You gave excellent advice to the girl who was being sexually harassed by one of her male teachers. You told her the best thing to do was to tell her parents immediately, and then to notify the school authorities. I’m now in college, but while I was in high school, I had an overly friendly teacher who constantly made lewd remarks to me. I was an excellent student, and this teacher had arranged for me to be his aide and help with his paperwork. I had a desk next to his, and he always was dropping papers and asking me to bend over and pick them up for him. Then one day it was my birthday and he knew it and surprised me with a “Happy Birthday Kiss” on the lips, and invited me to stop by his house because he had a special gift for my birthday. I told him I was too busy and refused the offer. He also told me several off-color jokes. I asked the principal if I could be transferred from being his aide. This was not allowed because I had no good reason. (I didn’t want to reveal the truth about the situation.) Then one day, my PE teacher called me aside and asked me why I always came to class with tears in my eyes, and I finally blurted out the whole story to her. The vice-principal called me in soon after and had a talk with me. It was

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace brought to light that another student aide had the same problem. It was near the end of the year, but still, I was transferred out of the class immediately and this teacher did a favor to all the future female students – he took an early retirement. Please continue telling students who are being sexually harassed by a teacher to make the situation known immediately to their parents and the principal. When the situation is made known to them, the school authorities will set things right again. – Nameless, Somewhere

In Missouri Nameless: The teacher was lucky

to have escaped with early retirement. He should have been fired immediately. Sexual harassment is abominable and cowardly any time, but doubly so when a teacher is involved. Most teachers are dedicated and honorable professionals, but occasionally, a rotten apple shows up. Dr. Wallace: I’m 12 years old and I need your advice. I’ve known my best friend, Shelly, for five years. I’ve known Lisa and Becky for two

years. These two are also my good friends. My problem is they dislike Shelly, but I don’t know the reason why. Yesterday, Shelly was at my house when Lisa and Becky came over and when they saw Shelly, they both left. Then today, Lisa called and said if I didn’t stop having Shelly for a friend, she and Becky would stop being my friends. This really has shocked me and made me feel really bad. I don’t know what I should do. Should I sacrifice one friend to keep two friends? (I’ve changed all the names for obvious reasons.) – Nameless,

Somewhere In Arizona Nameless: I think you know

dumping Shelly to keep Lisa and Becky as friends would leave you with a miserable feeling. The best way to handle the matter is to ask the two girls straight out why they dislike Shelly. Then maybe you could say enough good things about Shelly to change their minds about her. It’s worth a try. In any case, let them know Shelly will remain your best friend no matter what they decide. If Lisa and Becky decide to stop being friends with you because of this, it’s their loss. • Write to Dr. Wallace at rwallace@thegreatestgift.com.

Alexis Carrel, a French surgeon and biologist who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1912, said, “All great men are gifted with intuition. They know without reasoning or analysis, what they need to know.” Inter alia, that applies to bridge players. There are days when the top players are “in the zone,” just knowing where all of the cards lie. But they still analyze -- draw deductions from what has happened. In this deal, the original South, who thought he was an expert, lost two club tricks after reaching an incorrect conclusion. In six spades, South started with 11 top tricks: five spades, five hearts and one diamond. He was faced with guessing the club suit for the 12th winner. He won the heart lead with dummy’s queen, drew trumps in three rounds, and ran the hearts, discarding three clubs from the dummy. Then, after a diamond to the ace and a diamond ruff, the evil moment had arrived. When he led a low club toward the dummy, what should declarer have done, or was it a guess? At the time, South claimed that it was a guess; that West would always play low smoothly. The latter comment was right, but it was not a guess. West’s lead was known to have been a singleton. He would not have chosen that card looking at an ace, because he would have known that his partner could not have a speedy entry to deliver a heart ruff. So South should have played dummy’s club jack, which would have pulled out the ace and let the slam make.
