CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of River Valley, Inc., is kicking off the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month by issuing a call to action for the community to come together to support children who have been abused or neglected.

Formerly CASA of Will County, the organization, a 501(c)(3), whose mission is to draw from community resources to provide well-trained volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system, has been serving in Will County since 1993. But with Grundy County lacking a CASA program, the organization expanded and officially became CASA of River Valley in December.

At any given time, there are more than 400 children in foster care in Will County who come into the child welfare system through no fault of their own. Currently, CASA has 106 trained volunteer advocates to act as the voice of children involved in the juvenile court system. But more volunteers and donations are needed.

“The needs of Will County’s children coming into care are more complicated than ever before, and life in foster care can be chaotic,” said Rita Facchina, Executive Director. “Every child deserves the support of a caring, consistent adult with the training to help them heal and thrive.”

Throughout the month of April, CASA of Will County is calling on the community to help its program serve more of Will County’s most vulnerable children. There are a number of ways to help – through donations, supporting events, and learning more about its training program to become

Without intervention, the odds are stacked against children in foster care. A child with a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer, however, will leave the foster care system two-and-a-half months earlier, on average, compared to a child without a CASA volunteer. Studies show children with a CASA receive more services that are critical to their well-being than children without an advocate, and those children are more likely to achieve educational success.

“CASA volunteers are a constant for the child in a time of chaos,” said Denise Beran, Program Director of CASA of Will County.“A child may have multiple social workers, attorneys, therapists and foster placements throughout the life of the case but only one CASA volunteer, which can make all the difference for the child’s future and well-being.”

CASA of Will County, a United Way of Will County agency, is a member of the National CASA Association, a nationwide network of programs in nearly 1,000 communities.

are nearly 77,000 highly trained volunteers who advocate for the best interests of more than 250,000 of America’s children who have been abused or neglected. In 2018, CASA of Will County served more than 300 children, or 80 percent of those in need. The organization is seeking public support to reach its goal of serving 100 percent of the abused and neglected children in need of a CASA volunteer.

Easterseals Joliet Region has been serving children and adults in the Joliet community since 1949. Easterseals offers exciting summer groups to children for a wide variety of ages and ability levels.

Some examples of the groups include adapted golf, which takes place at Inwood Golf Course with the assistance of a golf pro and physical and occupational therapists. Adapted Athletes is a group for all children that takes place at the Cross Fit Plainfield gym with leadership from a Cross Fit coach as well as physical therapists.

Lions Club International is the largest volunteer service club in the world with over 47,000 clubs worldwide.

The Joliet Noon Lions Club is one of those clubs and is approaching its 100th Birthday. The club’s 45 members work toward the Lions Motto, “We Serve.”

Lions look for opportunities, especially in their respective communities, but also world wide to help those in need to help improve their lives.

Locally, the Joliet Noon Lions Club serves almost 300 people a year with screenings and supplies, eye exams, and corrective glasses, while also supplying 30 people a year with hearing aids.

The funds needed to support these services are provided from the results of several fundraisers, such as Candy Day, Sights and Sounds Sweepstakes, pancake breakfasts, Slammer events, broom and gumball sales, and Cash Bash Raffles.

The Joliet Noon Lions Club also has over 50 local drop off points where it collects used eyeglasses, hearing aids, pop top tabs, inkjet cartridges, used keys, and even Christmas tree lights.Last year alone the club collected over 10,000 pairs of used glasses.

In 2019, the Joliet Club also spearheaded a District 1/BK Drive and collected over $10,000.00, for the Joliet Area Community Hospice building fund campaign.

First Presbyterian giving and serving in Christ’s love

By ELLEN KIENTOP First Presbyterian Church, 805 Western Ave, Joliet, continues to be very involved in serving those in the local and global community. A lot of emphasis is put on providing food and supplies for those in need in the local community. This is done through a Micro-Pantry, hosting free meals open to the public, and donations through the Bags of Love.

The free meals provided are a free Pancake Breakfast the first Saturday of each month at 8 am served and prepared on site. Delicious dinners are also hosted on Wednesday nights through the school year.

During the summer, lunches are provided for children and families who may rely on school-provided meals the rest of the year. During these lunches the children also have the chance to learn how to make simple healthy meals.

Bags of Love is a collection of non-perishable foods and hygiene essentials. Some of the food is donated from local stores, helping minimize food waste. These supplies are gathered, sorted, and packaged by volunteers, then delivered to the local MorningStar Mission to be distributed to those in need in the Joliet community.

Outside the front door a Micro-Pantry is available 24/7 for those in need and is stocked with a large variety of groceries. This is designed for anonymous use, and is frequented regularly. Prepackaged, non-perishable, non-expired food donations are always welcome.

This past summer the First Pres Wildfire Youth Group traveled to Virginia and they spent a week completing 19 home improvement projects including painting, deck build-

ing, gutting and redoing an entire living room.

First Pres junior high students made a visit to the Spanish Community Center and were taught lessons on diversity and they also helped arrange a bi-lingual library.

This group then volunteered their time to assist the local Salvation Army in scheduled pick-ups of donated items.

The youth of First Pres have also kept emergency backpacks of essentials with them and have handed them out when they encounter someone in need in their daily lives.

Mission Council purchased almost $3000 worth of supplies such as sewing machines, water pumps, fishing nets, beekeeping start up kit, and livestock. These supplies will be provided for those in poverty around the world to allow them to become self-sustaining.

First Pres sponsors three young girls at an orphanage in Tanzania, Angel House. This sponsorship helps these girls receive an education, food, clothing, and learn valuable skills. The Quilt Group at First Pres did a Christmas Quilt raffle to send all proceeds to support the Angel House Tailoring Program which helps the residents learn sewing and be able to make goods.

The generous and loving spirit is everywhere at First Presbyterian, in young and old alike. This past year is yet another example of the faithful ministry and mission First Presbyterian Church is doing to serve the community and the world. It may not seem intuitive, but continuing to contribute to your retirement plan – even during market downturns – can potentially enhance your returns over the long-run. A down market can be an opportunity for you to acquire more shares of your investments at a lower price. Consistent investing through market ups and downs is called “dollar-cost averaging.” If an investment’s price is high, you buy fewer shares, or units. When prices are low, you buy more. Investing regularly, using dollar-cost averaging, can help reduce the risk associated with buying during big swings in market prices.

Diversify

If you’ve ever heard the saying, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” then you already have a basic understanding of diversification. Diversifying your portfolio can reduce risk and volatility. Review your account and make sure your portfolio is not too heavily weighted in company stock, or in any single asset class.

Stay invested

You may be anxious about the decrease in the value of your investments. But don’t be tempted to move out of the market, sit on the sidelines and wait for prices to rebound. Trying to time the market could potentially jeopardize your financial strategy – and your future goals.

Maintain a long-term focus

Any investment decisions you make should be based on your financial goals and objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance, rather than concerns about market volatility. Even if the market seems volatile, remember that ups and downs are normal. Walt’s Ice Cream a Joliet staple SUBMITTED REPORT Walt’s Ice Cream has been a staple in Joliet since 1926 when the famous five-flavor rainbow cones were introduced.

These cones boasted five scoops of frozen treats: chocolate, pistachio, and strawberry ice cream and lemon and orange sherbet, all piled high on top of one another in a cone.

“Some people have said it’s heavenly,” owner Bill Dillon said.

Dillon and his family own the iconic ice cream shop which serves its customers during the warmer months, from mid-March through mid-October. It was originally located at six corners in Joliet, then moved to a location on Ruby Street when the Dillon family purchased it in the 1960’s from Walt’s son-in-law. It relocated to Jefferson Street in 1989 and remains there today.

Dillon said the variety of hard ice cream flavors and soft serve options – vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and “twist mix” chocolate and vanilla cones – has kept customers interested in the ice

cream shop and coming back for generations.

“We pay attention to our customers and can call out orders from some of our customers, we have repeat and steady business,” Dillon said.

“I like to see the legacy of, ‘I came here when I was a kid and now I am bringing my kids or grandkids.’”

The specialized refreshments that customers order most, according to Dillon, are the historical rainbow cone, the turtle sundae, banana split, twist cone and the Boston Shake.

“The Boston Shake is like a milk shake float, it’s a shake and ice cream,” Dillon said. “That goes back a long time, not sure when it began, but I know that it was around when I was in high school.”

In addition to the softserve products, Walt’s offers a wide variety of scooped hard ice cream, sherbet, sugar-free ice cream and Italian ice.

Traditional favorites like pistachio, mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, cookies ‘n’ cream, and strawberry are complimented with

exotic flavors like Superman, salted caramel pretzel, French silk and New York Cherry, among many other popular in cones or cups. The hard ice cream is “premium” small batch quality, not big batch mass-produced ice cream.

Aside from ice cream and sherbet, Walt’s Ice Cream sells its signature French fried popcorn, which was an old recipe for popcorn cooked in oil. Other popcorn flavors include cheese and caramel, and the Chicago blend of cheese and caramel.

Once the weather turns warm, Walt’s Ice Cream becomes a neighborhood hangout with seating outside for 50 people. Music fills the air as friends and family come and have a cold snack and stay to chat, sometimes for an hour, Dillon said.

The red and white striped building stands out on Jefferson Street and the old-fashioned ‘50s style building makes people feel nostalgic, while the straight forward person-to-person customer service, decadent and unique ice cream, sherbet and popcorn makes Walt’s Ice Cream a Joliet staple.

Joliet agency expands outreach in 8 counties SUBMITTED REPORT With a strong emphasis on “saying yes” to patients, families and care partners, Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH) continues to expand its outreach for all programs including hospice care, palliative care and bereavement services.

The “say yes” philosophy instituted by CEO Mary K. Sheehan promotes a culture of openness, teamwork and adaptability amongst JACH’s 180 employees and 250 volunteers. Saying yes means JACH does everything possible to honor patient wishes. Most importantly, saying yes allows people to choose hospice and palliative care to improve the quality of life, not just the quality of death.

Last year, hospice admissions rose to a record-high 2,179 patients treated. About a quarter of the people were in-patient at the Hospice Home

in Joliet with the balance being served at home or in a local nursing home or assisted living facility.

This record-year constitutes a 9% increase in the number of hospice patients in our care compared to 2018. JACH has the infrastructure in place and the local resources to serve families in eight counties: Will, Grundy, Kendall, Livingston, LaSalle and portions of Cook, DuPage and Kankakee.

In response to this growth, JACH is expanding the Hospice Home. A $7.5 million capital project is currently underway which will result in 9,000 square feet of additional facilities on the Joliet campus.

When work is complete next spring, there will be four new and 16 renovated patient rooms. Each room will be designed, decorated and equipped for optimum comfort for both the patient and loved ones. In each room, French doors will open onto a private patio where a patient can enjoy

The Peace of the Heart Kids Camp will be offered this summer for children who have experienced the death of a loved one. Held at the Pilcher Park Nature Center, this camp provides four days of a safe place where children ages 7-13 can bond and share grief experiences.

Kiwanis Club of Joliet celebrates 100 years SUBMITTED REPORT Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.

In 2020, the Kiwanis Club of Joliet celebrates 100 years of service to the community. Chartered in 1920, The Kiwanis Club of Joliet’s mission is to serve the local community. This milestone will be celebrated with a Centennial Dinner focusing on their service and the impact it has made on communities globally and locally.

Due to the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Kiwanis Club of Joliet has decided to postpone its 100th Anniversary Dinner, scheduled for May 2, 2020. “One hundred years of service to the Joliet community is cause for celebration”, said Vince Portlock, President of the Joliet Kiwanis Club, “but the health and safety of our members and our community friends and partners is of paramount importance to us.”

A new date is being selected by Club and will be announced shortly.

In 1934, the Joliet club produced the first Annual Kiwanis Show. This show helped identify Kiwanis in the community as well as raise funds for local charities and scholarships. The show was a Joliet tradition for more than 60 years.

In 1967, the club began annual participation in the nationwide Kiwanis Peanut Day where members sell peanuts to the public. This continues to be the largest

The club also sponsors an Aktion Club (for people with different abilities), as well as youth activities through Key Clubs at JCA, JT West and JT Central, and Builders Clubs at Hufford, Dirksen and Elwood Junior

High Schools.

Weekly club meetings are held at noon on Mondays at the Jacob Henry Mansion.

Guests and new members are always welcome. A celebration exhibit is running at the Joliet Area Historical Museum until April. The exhibit features photos and memorabilia from the start of the club all the way up to our focus and projects today. Featured information includes the history of our Kiwanis Show, Walk for Mankind and Kiwanis Peanut Days.

Simotes Motor Sales gives back to community

By ALLISON SELK Simotes Motor Sales and Service has not only sold vehicles in the village of Minooka for nearly 34 years, but chose to give back to the community in which it serves through youth sports, financial scholarships and donating vehicles to local kids with cancer.

Founding owner Larry Simotes volunteered with Minooka baseball over 20 years, offering free baseball lessons to the youth and coaching baseball at Minooka Junior High School for 18 years. Larry Simotes, with his first career as a teacher wanted to help children and took his role in the community seriously. He donates to the Minooka High School scholarship fund for

athletes, and last year donated 700 copies of his book “Two Strikes and Not Out,” A book about a World War Two Veteran George Edward Bigelow. A Hero who survived the sinking of the SS Leopoldville and one of the greatest men Mr. Simotes ever met.

Larry Simotes and his wife, Lisa, raised two sons and a daughter in Minooka. The boys, Grant and Mac, now run the business their father started in 1986 in an old abandoned gas station with 10 cars on the lot.

In 1995, Larry built the current location on the corner of I-80 and Ridge Road and in 2018 it was renovated to create more office space and a bigger waiting area for both the sales and service department. Addi-

tional renovations are underway with an expanded parking lot in the back and concrete in the front of the building. Larry Simotes spends time in Florida and Minooka, and guides his sons on the day-to-day operations.

Grant Simotes said Simotes Motor Sales from day one has strived to sell value, by offering the best vehicles with the lowest miles for the best value to their customers. Most vehicles have extended warranties and all vehicles come with a Power Trane warranty and options for additional extended warranties. Each vehicle goes through service shop inspection by the mechanics on site and if it does not meet standards, it gets shipped off to auction, according to Grant.

The lot holds 100 vehicles at any given time, and Grant said he hopes to bump the number to 115 to give customers even more to choose from.

“We want to find out what the customer needs and not pressure them, we like them to decide on their own. If people take their time when purchasing a vehicle, they feel good about their purchase,” Grant said.

Beyond vehicle sales, Simotes Motor Sales and Service has a full service department with certified technicians to service vehicles sold on or off of the lot and uniquely the department has a technician qualified to work on diesel trucks.

Larry Simotes said he knows his giving nature has

rubbed off on his sons and daughter. Grant said the scholarship program still thrives and once he and his brother Mac get settled more into Minooka, they too want to get involved with coaching and sports as well as nonprofit support.

“Local charities and churches are good to take care of because they know what is most needed and who is in need in the community. Our entire family also has a love for animals and donates to Animal Charities as well, including funding the adoption of 70 dogs in need of homes from the Animal Rescue Project. Lewis University launches speech-language pathology program

By ALLISON SELK This summer, Lewis University will launch its newly created Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program, designed by Dr. Tina Veale.

Veale, a professor and program director in the Speech-Language Pathology department designed this program for Lewis University, her third university in which she authored the masters program.

She said Lewis University has a goal to develop several health science graduate degrees due to market demands.

“Employers can’t find enough health care providers and now entry level Speech Pathologists need a master’s, without a master’s degree they cannot be licensed,” Veale said.

Veale said she expects about 130 applications and the program will accept 30 to 35 into the inaugural year.

The highly competitive program has a host of academic requirements, but Lewis University strives to look at the whole student not just grade point average or Graduate Record Examination scores.

Veale said the teletherapy suite will demonstrate how the therapist and client work on therapy even when not in the same room via computer.

She said for example, with the COVID-19 cases, clients

could still receive services without a face to face visit.

Veale said students who apply to this program ask if it’s medical or educational and she designed this program with the coursework split in half to prepare for a career in a school or in healthcare.

“Graduates will be licensed certified to treat people of all ages in either setting. I consider this program didactic and clinical,” Veale said.

Joliet YMCA Summer Day Camp to include character development plan

By ALLISON SELK A new character development plan will be instituted to the Summer Day Camp at Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs in Joliet.

Erin Lightbody, Youth Development Operations Director for the Greater Joliet Area YMCA said a grant was received from the YMCA of the USA through the Character Development Learning Institute to focus on five areas of character such as emotion management, empathy, relationship building, responsibility and personal development. Those traits along with the core values of the YMCA, honesty, caring, respect and responsibility will be intertwined in the curriculum in this year’s Summer Day Camp which runs June 1 to Aug. 14 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for youth going into grades K-8.

The grant will cover the cost of staff training and materials, Lightbody said and the goal of the program will be to have the staff bring positive language and interactions with the campers. She met with directors twice per month to develop a curriculum for Summer Day Camp as well as the before and after school programs offered at the YMCA locations to encompass the character traits from the development plan as well as the YMCA core values. Each week of camp will focus on one of the traits.

“These character values were always a part of the YMCA, but now we infuse this with our curriculum, this grant will help us hammer home these traits that we have begun to use in our before and after school programs,” Lightbody said.

Another new part of the Summer Day Camp experience will be gardens at the facilities. A few years ago, a garden was built at the C.W. Avery YMCA in Plainfield and Lightbody said it was eye opening to the kids.

“Some of the kids had never tried some of the veggies we grew, this also increased the kids’ awareness of where food comes from and how to eat healthy,” Lightbody said. “Families are always go-go-go, this will hopefully teach them the foundation of a healthy meal and what to build upon.”

Campers will be outside 90 percent of the time, Lightbody feels that’s where kids

should be in the summer.

Each week campers will embark on a field trip to places such as a trampoline park, water park, the zoo and a Joliet Slammers game. On site, campers will be grouped by grade level and activity stations will be set up around both facilities for the groups to rotate.

Lightbody said she hopes the campers have fun at the Summer Day Camp while

they experience new positive things they may not have the chance to experience outside of camp, make friends and have a good summer.

“We want to build relationships. We have campers living in the same town, but in different schools who don’t see each other during the year, but they know they will see their friends at camp,” Lightbody said. “We also have campers who go through

the camps and then come back as counselors.”

Benefits of the YMCA camps, according to Lightbody, include a safe place to be in the summer, a positive environment, being supported, around adults who want the camper to succeed, have fun and learn.

Morris Hospital completes first phase of major renovations SUBMITTED REPORT After months of anticipation, Morris Hospital has completed the first phase of a $33.5 million modernization on the main hospital campus.

A new Infusion Therapy Center and Outpatient Lab opened in January off the hospital main lobby, followed by the March 5 opening of a new Emergency Department on the east wing of the hospital’s first floor. The new Emergency Department has 17 treatment rooms compared to 11 previously, including a new rapid care area for patients with the least serious illness and injuries.

For patients, the enhancements should mean improved privacy and less time spent in the Emergency Department.

“The new Emergency Department was designed to provide patients with a completely different experience compared to our previous process,” says Tony Bucki, Director of Emergency Services at Morris Hospital. “As long as rooms are available, patients can count on going straight back to treatment instead of returning to the waiting room. We don’t want people waiting.”

The hospital also has a new Women’s Imaging Center, bringing mammography, breast ultrasound, bone density and stereotactic breast biopsy together in one location, with a private waiting area for women undergoing testing.

The renovations at the hospital are part of a $60 million master facility plan that also included construction of the new Morris Hospital Diamond-Coal City Campus at the corner of Route 113 and McGinty in Diamond. The facility opened on February 11 offers the community primary care and ob/gyn physician services, walk-in convenient care 7 days a week for patients 12 months and older, laboratory services, physical

Along with the building enhancements and service expansions, Morris Hospital achieved a number of accolades over the past year, including an “A” grade on both Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade reports released in

2019, an indication of the hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

Additionally, Morris Hospital was recognized with two distinctions in quality excellence from Healthgrades: the Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellent Aware and the Outstanding Patient Ex-

perience Award. Morris Hospital also made the 100 Great Community Hospitals list on Becker’s Hospital Review for the fourth year in a row.

Joliet Township High Schools Foundation enriches education SUBMITTED REPORT The Joliet Township High Schools Foundation was established almost 30 years ago as a 501(c)(3) educational foundation to provide funds to help further enrich District 204’s students’ educational opportunities.

Annually, the Foundation provides almost $90,000 in funding to provide schol-

arships, mini-grants for students and staff, funding of the Principals’ Emergency Funds, along with providing Summer School and Testing Support.

The Foundation Board is made up of community minded volunteers and has no paid staff. Funds raised through an Annual Trivia Afternoon, Golf Outing, Slammers Day, and en-

dowment earnings provide the bulk of the funds needed. Additional fundraising comes from the sales of Wall of Honor Plaques, Ceremonial Field House Bricks, and Foundation Cookbooks.

Less than one year ago Colleen Brodhead took over as principal at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School where she said she now feels at home.

“There is a stronger sense of community and family in a Catholic school, we have an opportunity to share our faith with students, staff and parents,” Brodhead said.

“There is such a history and legacy at St. Paul’s. It’s humbling to hear how many generations of people went to St. Paul’s and the legacy St. Paul’s has as part of this community.”

Brodhead said when she took over on June 17, 2019, she was in charge of big changes with staff. She said the prior administration had left as well as office staff and teachers.

She said she felt blessed as the staff at the school worked together and through this period of restructure seven new teachers were hired as well as two office staff.

“It’s been a lot of work to build this staff, but I’m lucky because as a staff we have worked and grown together,” Brodhead said.

When Brodhead entered her position she wanted to build on what St. Paul’s already had and grow from there.

She said the staff has worked on technology training, reviewed test scores and curriculum and encouraged the teachers to work toward its mission to help build up a community and instill the Catholic values in students and become faith filled academic people.

Brodhead said she set goals for St. Paul’s to increase enrollment, share the mission of the school as well as expand and grow the school.

Enrollment for the K-8 school rests at 200 with average class size of 22 to 23 students, but has a large eighth grade class of 37-split into two classes based on learning needs.

Brodhead said in the future she would love to see two classes of each grade which would open up the social emotional component of education.

Benefits of a Catholic education, Brodhead said, includes a faith based curriculum, daily religion class and celebrating sacraments together as a school family.

Students and teachers

are able to share their faith openly, celebrate religious holidays and teachers can connect with students in small class sizes.

Lori McBride, who has worked at St. Paul’s for 27 years said faith was the center of the benefit of a Catholic education.

“We make connections to our faith and immerse our students into their faith,” McBride said.

“When we teach the student we teach the whole student about everything, academics and faith. Not every student comes into our school knowing all about the faith, but it’s our job as educators to teach them how our faith connects with them individually and academically.”

Brodhead began her career in education in 1990 with Indian Prairie School Dist. 204. After, she worked as asst. principal at St. Michael Catholic School in Wheaton and asst. principal/dean of students at Gower Middle School in Burr Ridge. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in School Leadership and Administration from Benedictine University.

Trinity Services celebrates 70 years of helping people with developmental disabilities, mental illness live full, abundant lives SUBMITTED REPORT NEW LENOX, Ill. – To many, age is just a number, but to Trinity Services, turning 70 is a proud milestone and indicator of how many lives the organization has been able to impact.

In its 70 years, Trinity Services has helped thousands of people with developmental disabilities and mental illness flourish and live full and abundant lives. It grew from its 1950 start as a small school in Joliet to a statewide organization that annually supports approximately 4,000 people.

Trinity provides residential services, employment services, community day services (also known as day programs), assistive technology support, behavioral health services, a transition program for young adults, a school program for students ages 3-21, autism services, a homeless support program, crisis support services, respite care and more for people with developmental disabilities and mental health needs.

Open to the public, Trinity also provides a counseling center with locations in New Lenox, Joliet and Homewood.

Trinity continues to use donations and grant funding to expand its services and reach. Its mission to help people flourish is at the heart of all the organization does, and it can be felt in all of the small moments and big achievements that take place on a regular basis.

For example, a young man learned to budget with the help of staff members and felt accomplishment when he was able to purchase a pair of headphones for himself.

A woman who never had a comfortable place to call her own felt security when she was able to obtain her own apartment with Trinity’s help. A man who is unable to speak felt a deep connection with a staff member who took the initiative to teach him sign language while learning the language, herself.

Disabilities and mental illnesses are just labels. Trinity Services staff members help people achieve their goals and live the lives they want to live by providing the support they need to be successful.

Trinity is planning a summer community event to celebrate its 70 years, and the organization plans to announce details later this spring. All will be welcome.

The hospital also continues to be ranked one of the safest hospitals in the nation, earning its 10th straight “A” from the Leapfrog Group, a Washington, D.C.-based organization aiming to improve healthcare quality and safety for consumers.

For the 10th straight time, Silver Cross Hospital was recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded an “A” Hospital Safety Grade by the Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C-based organization aiming to improve health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. Silver Cross was one of only 858 hospitals across the nation awarded an “A” for its efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

Less than nine months after Silver Cross introduced its open heart surgery program in May 2019, the hospital had already performed lifesaving heart surgeries on 100+ patients.

Also in spring 2019, Silver Cross became the region’s first hospital to offer a new miniaturized, wireless monitoring sensor to manage heart failure. The CardioMEMS Heart Failure System is the first and only FDA-approved heart failure monitoring device that has been proven to significantly reduce hospital admissions when used by physicians to manage heart failure.

Finally, in late 2019, the hospital broke ground on a 33,000-square-foot, 2-story addition on the east side of the hospital that will include: Two cardiovascular operating rooms Two dedicated open heart operating rooms A hybrid room for minimally invasive heart procedures Two dedicated recovery rooms A dedicated patient elevator to the hospital’s new 16-bed cardiovascular unit Four cardiac echo and stress-testing rooms An advanced electrophysiology lab to treat abnormal heart rhythms And added space for future growth When construction is

complete in late 2020, Silver Cross will have the ability to provide innovative, multi-specialty care for patients with advanced and complex coronary disease. This includes surgery to correct the abnormalities of the heart structure such as repairing and replacing aortic and mitral valves.

Historically, open-heart surgery has been the common method for treating structural heart disease; however, minimally invasive valve replacement now provides a viable alternative to patients for whom conventional surgery is considered too risky – and offers the potential benefits of lower risk of infection, less trauma to the chest and heart muscle tissue, reduced length of stay in the hospital, and a quicker recovery.

Beginning Monday, March 30, Silver Cross Urgent Care Center will open at 1851 Silver Cross Blvd., Suite 100, located

The center will be open seven days a week and offer care for non-emergency situations such as minor fractures, back pain, nausea, vomiting, minor headaches, bumps, cuts and scrapes, ear or sinus pain, adult fevers, cough or sore throat, stitches, sprains and strains and much more.
