Presence Saint Joseph nurses authorize strike if talks break down

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Nurses at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center on Wednesday authorized a strike by a vote of 529 to 89.

No strike is scheduled, but the vote gives the negotiating committee the authority to call a strike if contract talks break down.

Negotiations are scheduled for Thursday and Friday. The existing contract expires at the end of Saturday, but a spokesman has said that the earliest that the union would strike is May 22.

Two-thirds of the nurses had to vote in favor of the strike to authorize the negotiating committee to call a walkout, said Chris Martin, a spokesman for the Illinois Nurses Association.

The INA represents more than 800 nurses at Presence Saint Joseph.

A federal mediator joined contract negotiations this week.

INA contends that hospital administration wants to cut costs by having nurses do housekeeping and patient transport duties.

Presence Saint Joseph President Robert Erickson said in a statement that the administration was “disheartened” by the vote.

“By voting to authorize a strike, INA members have given up their right

to INA to decide when and whether to strike, regardless of what offers Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center presents,” Erickson said.

The two sides are divided over pay and work duties.

The union has said it wants increases in pay to compensate experienced nurses who at times are making less than newly hired nurses brought into the hospital at higher rates of pay. Administration said those incidents are isolated and has offered to resolve the pay discrepancies where they occur.

Nurses want pay increases that the union says total 20 percent over the course of a three-year contract.

Hospital administration has said the nurses proposal amounts to a 23 percent increase. They have offered a two-year contract with increases of 2.5 percent and 2 percent.

Martin said any strike would be limited to three days at most.

But the union in a news release after the vote noted that nurses in 1993 conducted a 61-day strike at the hospital over wages and working conditions.

Joliet D-86 board approves asbestos abatement work at Culbertson

At Wednesday’s meeting, the board unanimously approved a base bid of $152,800 for asbestos abatement of a crawl space and $96,740 for mechanical piping insulation work at Culbertson, 1521 E. trict, stated in a letter to the district that M&O Environmental Co. has “successfully completed several projects for us in the past, including one of the schools in Joliet last summer.”

Tinley Park-based K. M. Holly Construction was the lowest responsible bidder for the installation of new mechanical piping insulation to steam supply and steam condensate return piping, according to Healy, Bender and Associates, the district’s architect.

“Based upon their experience with other renovation projects for public schools, we would recommend that the [board] accept the proposal,” David Patton of Healy, Bender and Associates, said in a letter to the district.

South Joliet, Elwood intersections could see safety improvements

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A consulting firm is suggesting a handful of changes to intersections along Route 53 between south Joliet and the Wilmington area.

The preliminary ideas are aimed at improving safety and operations on the road, as well as pedestrian and bicycle accommodations along the route, Illinois Department of Transportation consultant studies unit head Kimberly Murphy said.

IDOT, with support from consulting firm Clark Dietz and engineers at Patrick Engineering, held a community advisory group meeting May 3 at Stone City VFW Post 2199 off Route 53 to get feedback from residents and businesses. During the session, possible intersection solutions were presented after more than a year of research and review related to a Route 53 study the state began in fall 2015.

The 13-mile study spans the Route 53 corridor between Doris Avenue at the north and West Arsenal Road south of Wilmington, which has seen an influx of truck traffic since the opening of intermodals in the area, such as the nation’s largest inland port – CenterPoint Intermodal Center – in 2002.

Local officials, particularly in the small village of Elwood, have spoken out for years about the danger posed when semitrailers make ill-advised turns onto residential roads and the reality that trucks are traveling on what was largely designed as a rural road system.

There was the time, in January 2016, a truck driver was cited for rolling over graves at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

And last week, Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said that at least one semi went down a residential street into a dead-end cul-de-sac and had trouble getting out. The truck broke up the curb and dragged out some landscaping with it.

“Unfortunately, the study has been commissioned after significant impact to the area,” said Hayes, who wants better signage and communication of routes for truck drivers.

“But I’m very encouraged the state is taking into serious consideration the safety of this roadway.”

The imposing threat of thousands of semis on Route 53 just east of the village’s core became so frightening that officials and residents banded together to form a group called Safe Roads Illinois in December 2015.

Elwood officials pushed for and were granted in 2015 the closing of Walter Strawn Drive – a road that connected trucks stopping at Elwood industrial facilities to Route 53.

The decision has brought trucks off Elwood’s stretch of Route 53, said Hayes and state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Joliet, whose district includes Elwood and south Joliet.

“But as growth continues, con-

gestion on Route 53 will only expand,” Walsh Jr. said. “We need to be in front of it, and that’s one of the reasons IDOT is looking into [solutions].”

Between 2010 and 2014, 483 crashes occurred on the stretch of Route

53 under review. Murphy said there are problems at many of the intersections.

“We want to take a look at any area with crashes,” Murphy said.

Tour offers look at limestone buildings

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet limestone tour Saturday will offer an inside look at some of the city’s notable buildings.

The Joliet Area Historical Museum and Joliet Historic Preservation Commission have organized the tour of four buildings in the downtown area made from the local limestone that gets its name from Joliet.

The tour starts at 9 a.m. in the Ottawa Street parking lot of the museum, which is located at 204 N. Ottawa St. The tour runs until noon.

A chartered school bus will take tour-goers to: the Frederick Sehring mansion, which also is the former Tribunal building for the Diocese of Joliet, on Bridge Street; All Saints Greek Orthodox Church on Broadway Street; Joliet Central High School; and the Auditorium Building, which is the former Universalist Unitarian Church that has been converted to condominium and business use.

Bankruptcy makes matters worse for Central Grocers workers

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Workers at Central Grocers already facing unemployment are finding that their situation is made worse by the company’s bankruptcy.

At least 60 people were laid off the last two days at Central Grocers, sources said, meaning they will miss out on several weeks of pay and benefits as the company’s operations wind down faster than it predicted before filing for bankruptcy last week.

The bankruptcy provides an exception to the 60-day notice required for mass layoffs under state law, said a spokeswoman with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Workers inside the Joliet warehouse say that the company’s business is dwindling.

“It was dying down,” said one warehouse worker who did not want his name used. “I thought I could probably get to the end of the month.”

Instead, he was laid off Tuesday.

Central Grocers CEO Ken Nemeth sent a letter to employees May 3 citing the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Nemeth said the company planned to shut down its operations and antici-

pated terminating all 549 employees between June 26 and July 10.

The letter does not mention the bankruptcy, which was filed the next day.

Bankruptcy is an exception allowed under the WARN Act, said Jacquelyn Reinke, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Econom-

ic Opportunity.

“It would be an exception to that 60day notice,” she said.

The state agency received a WARN letter from Central Grocers advising of the bankruptcy filing. Staff has determined that the company qualifies for the exception to the 60-day rule, Reinke said.

Workers who did not want to be named, meanwhile, said Wednesday that they also were hearing that they could lose pay due to them for unused vacation and personal days because of actions being taken in bankruptcy court.

The exact number of workers laid off this week could not be determined.

The company has repeatedly declined to comment on layoffs. An official with Teamsters Local 703, which represents warehouse workers at Central Grocers, could not be reached Wednesday to confirm the number.

But warehouse workers said they had heard at least 60 members of Teamsters Local 703 were laid off. That does not include any of the other 150 workers at the Joliet operation who may have been laid off.

Providence sued by parent after expulsion over racist song

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The father of a student who was expelled from Providence Catholic High School over a racist song has filed a lawsuit against the school and the Diocese of Joliet.

The father also is seeking to reinstate his son at the school or seek judgment on the case based on a temporary restraining order filed against Providence officials.

The father and his son – a former freshman – are named “John Doe” in the April 28 complaint that alleges the son was “wrongfully removed” from the school in March after an incident in which he played a racist song at a black student and that his removal was a “political response” to a WGNTV story on the incident.

The complaint argues that while the song had racist language, it “actually mocked and criticized racism.” “[The student] is being used as a

scapegoat by Providence to respond to an array of social media criticism and media pressure,” the complaint said.

The Rev. Richard McGrath, president of Providence; school Principal John Harper; the Diocese of Joliet; and the school were named as defendants in the complaint. Calls and emails to McGrath and Harper were not immediately returned late Wednesday afternoon.

The father and son are suing the defendants for breach of contract, violation of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act and false light.

Providence officials expelled the student March 17 after Tianna Waits complained they played a song with racist lyrics at her son. She pulled her son out of school the day after the incident occurred March 13 and he now attends Joliet Central High School.

The complaint alleges the student and Waits’ son were friends socializing with two other students in the school cafeteria March 13. The student played a parody rap song that used “racially insensitive language but as a form of criticizing racist behavior.”

Waits’ son had asked the student to replay the song and recorded him listening to it on video, according to the complaint.

The complaint alleges the student did not damage the reputation of Providence or disrupt it, blaming Waits for posting a video of the incident online and the story on it from WGN-TV. The complaint argues the student was improperly removed from school without a meaningful disciplinary hearing by a committee that was biased against him.

JOLIET – The Olivia Newton-John concert originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rialto Square Theatre has been postponed, according to a theater news release.

Newton-John’s management issued the following statement, according to the news release: “We are so sorry to announce that the Olivia concerts scheduled for May will be postponed due to a bad issue with Olivia’s sciatica. Once the dates are rescheduled we will post the new dates ASAP. Apologies for any inconvenience.”

Newton-John is a four-time Grammy Award-winning singer who starred in the movie “Grease,” which was released in 1978, and has sold an estimated 100 million albums during her career. Her most recent hit was the song “You Have to Believe,” which was released in 2015.

Ticket holders should keep their tickets until the new date is announced. All tickets previously purchased will be honored on the rescheduled date.

Frankfort man charged in shooting on I-290 The HERALD–NEWS Illinois State Police officials announced the arrest of a Frankfort man Wednesday in connection with an expressway shooting that occurred last year.

Allante James Sewell, 23, was charged in the Oct. 31 incident, according to a state police news release.

About 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31, state troopers were Allante dispatched to a reported James Sewell shooting on eastbound Interstate 290 at North Avenue near Elmhurst.

The victim told troopers he was traveling home on I-290 when a vehicle pulled up next to the driver’s side of his vehicle, the news release stated.

The front seat passenger of the offending vehicle rolled down the window and fired two rounds from a semi-automatic handgun at the victim. One bullet struck

the driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle, the second bullet was not located.

The victim briefly followed the suspect and then pulled over and called 911.

A canvass of the area was conducted for evidence and one projectile was removed from the victim’s vehicle.

An investigation was conducted by state police in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. During the course of the investigation, Sewell was identified as a suspect.

On April 18, state police investigators presented their findings to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. State’s Attorney Robert Berlin approved one felony count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. A $50,000 warrant was issued for Sewell.

Sewell was arrested Tuesday by Will County sheriff’s police. He is in custody at the Will County jail on unrelated charges. Upon his release, he will be taken to the DuPage County Jail to be arraigned on the shooting charge.

Troy firefighter dies in Florida

bstanley@shawmedia.com ESTERO, FLA. – A Troy firefighter died Tuesday morning after a medical emergency.

Lt. John Probst was preparing to return from a vacation with his girlfriend when he collapsed, Troy Fire Protection District Chief Andy Doyle said. Probst was taken to a hospital, but did not survive.

“It was some kind John Probst of medical issue, but we weren’t told more than that,” Doyle said Wednesday morning.

“Everybody here is in shock. It’s hard to believe.”

Doyle said the Estero fire chief notified Troy firefighters of Probst’s

death Tuesday afternoon.

Probst, 35, began his career with the Hometown Fire Department in 1999 and came to Troy in 2006. His last assignment was supervising a shift of four firefighters at Fire Station 1. Probst and his crew received a lifesaving award two years ago for resuscitating a man who’d gone into full cardiac arrest.

Probst also was a member of the agency’s Hazardous Materials and Technical Rescue teams who “loved training,” Doyle said.

“He was a really good fireman.

If you needed something done at a scene, you knew John could get it done or help someone get it done,” Doyle said.

Probst is survived by a 14-yearold son, his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral arrangements were pending Wednesday.

“I am a single mom currently not receiving proper child support,” she explained. “I graduated from St. Ray’s and my daughter cannot wait to go to school and show me all her projects and everything she has learned.”

It has truly transformed my family and given us hope.”

CEF able to grant $2.2 million in Catholic school scholarships

Annually, the Foundation fields thousands of requests from students in need of tuition assistance. The application period spans January 1 through March 1 every year.

Board OKs utility bill processing service

Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – After a few short orders of business at the Shorewood Village Board meeting Tuesday, the April 4 election results were read and the elected board members were sworn in by Clerk Tracy Ragusa.

Village Finance Director Anne Burkholder addressed the board first for the consideration of approval of a contract with MB Financial Bank for lockbox services. The service would process check payments from residents for their utility bills. Burkholder said the service would cost the village about $1,024 a month, but would save up to 10 hours of work each week, allowing staff time to be used in a more appropriate manner.

The village receives 2,000 checks a month in the mail – the most popular method of payment – for utilities. Online credit cards come in second with 1,800 residents; 1,200 residents use online payments through their bank;

600 use checking account direct debit; and 250 come into the office and pay in person.

Burkholder said the only difference to the check payer is that the checks will be mailed to a P.O. box in Carol Stream and then MB Financial will process the checks daily and create a file for upload into the village’s software. She also said that payments at Village Hall or in the drop box still will be accepted and processed internally.

The board voted unanimously to accept the contract.

Also Tuesday, Village Engineer Bryan Welch gave an update on the Route 52 and River Road improvement plans, and the board unanimously approved paying Nicor Gas $73,867 for relocation of a gas main at the intersection.

The gas mains that need relocation because of the construction project are between the Gas N Wash entrance and River Road, within a gas easement from 1968. The village was responsible for the cost of the portion of the reloca-

tion within the easement.

Welch said the total was an estimate and the costs most likely would be less.

Because of the April 4 election, Mayor Rick Chapman asked the board for, and was granted, approval of the re-appointments of David Goodale, Duane Gronwald, Ellen Kijowski and Ken Votava for two-year terms on the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Chapman then recognized the service of Trustee Ed Murphy and Ragusa at the end of their service to the board.

Afterward, Ragusa stood before the board to swear in Trustees Daniel Anderson, Daniel Warren and Clarence DeBold, as well as Chapman. DeBold was the only new member of the board after the election.

Chapman spoke about some of his goals for the next four years, which include the finalization of a water deal, youth services and maintenance of a safe community.

He said he knows Shorewood offers many places for youth to play sports

outside during the warmer months, but then they go to surrounding communities for indoor sports during the winter because of the lack of a Shorewood facility. His plan is to create an indoor space for basketball and volleyball as well as other sports and activities.

There was no mention or public comment on the ongoing topic of Chapman using village gas for his own vehicle, instead of filling up elsewhere and filing an expense report. Mailers were sent to residents before the election showing Chapman at the village gas pumps with his personal vehicle.

During the board meeting April 25, it was standing room only as residents spoke for or against the mayor about the issue.

In a phone interview Wednesday, Trustee Anthony Luciano said the board has planned to discuss the issue at a later date, which could be the next meeting, on May 23. He said no other discussions have occurred on what actions may be taken.

In its current configuration, some motorists traveling south on Route 53 turn left at Doris Avenue – despite there being no left turn lane – if they want to continue on to Route 52. The state is considering moving Route 52 almost a quarter-mile south to Mills Road, where the current configuration eventually ends.

The Clark Dietz firm believes moving Route 52 will alleviate congestion at the Doris Avenue intersection, where the left southbound lane often gets clogged up as motorists wait to turn left. The stretch of Route 53 is apparently lacking in left turn lanes.

“A lot of left turns without actual turn lanes can lead to operational and safety issues, and the viaduct north of the Doris Avenue intersection would limit the length of an added left turn lane,” Murphy said, adding that the re-route idea was well-received at the May 3 meeting and was suggested by Will County.

Will County Highway Engineer Jeffrey Ronaldson said the county isn’t significantly involved with the study process but is in support of alleviating truck traffic at various intersections, such as Arsenal Road and Route 53.

“Any improvement they make would be welcome,” Ronaldson said.

IDOT has proposed adding right turn lanes at the Route 53 and Laraway Road intersection. Murphy said the intersection is limited when it comes to expansion, because of access points to the south and the railroad to the west, so the added turn lanes would be a way to improve operations of the intersection without a major reconstruction.

IDOT also is considering a fiveway roundabout intersection on Mills Road where Route 52 continues to the southeast, and an alignment of Zurich Road west of Route 53 and Girard Boulevard east of Route 53 that, according to the proposed alignment, would require property acquisition that likely would force relocation of an auto shop.

Murphy said all proposals are tentative, and additional public meetings will follow.

Hayes suggested a designated truck lane north and south on Route 53 that would bring both sides to three lanes, although he admitted it’s easy to pitch ideas without funding in mind. Murphy said adding entire lanes is not likely in the immediate future because traffic counts are not high enough.

The state now will evaluate which proposed projects along Route 53 garner the highest priority. Implementation and funding will be considered later in the process.

Marie loved to play pinochle and belonged to a group which played every other Wednesday for many years. She also loved to bake and will be remembered for her delicious cookies, cakes and pies.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 70 years, Arthur J. De Lorenzo; one daughter, Nina (Larry) Tapella of Joliet; two grandchildren, Anne (Nick) Lundin of Iron River, MI and Mark (Nahrain) Tapella of Naperville; five great-grandchildren, Carolyn, Nathan and Abel Lundin and Sophia Marie and Isabella Grace Tapella; and many nieces and nephews.

He attended Farragut Grade School, graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1938, and attended Joliet Junior College during 1938-39. On August 23, 1941, he married Margaret Duffy and they celebrated 71 years of marriage. Frank passed away peacefully on May 9, 2017, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge (2013); and his parents; older brother, Dick Parks (Dorothy); and his son-in-law, Robert Baitinger (Carolyn).

Frank enlisted into the Navy in August of 1943 and served with the Seabees in Guam until January 1946. After the war he worked for the Public Service in Joliet, built a home on River Road in Plainfield, served as Commander of the Plainfield American Legion Marine Post 13, and became a member of the Masonic Lodge #536 in Plainfield. Frank and his brother opened Parks Bros. Supermarket in Plainfield in 1958 and a second store in Sandwich, IL in1960. Frank was also Board Chairman of the Plainfield National Bank for 12 years. He retired from the grocery business in 1983. Frank was an avid outdoor sportsman of hunting and fishing. In late 1979, he built a cottage on Lake of Egypt near Marion, IL that he frequented after his retirement. Upon his death, Frank had been a member of the Plainfield Congregational Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a 70-year member of the American Legion.

SPRINGFIELD – The Democratic-controlled Illinois Senate voted Wednesday to expand public financing for abortions and ensure legal access to the procedure across the state, although the measure likely awaits a veto by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Senators voted along party lines, 33-22, in favor of the plan, which would permit abortion coverage by state employee health insurance and Medicaid funds. It would also strike statutory language expressing the state’s intent to criminalize the procedure if the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized it is ever overturned.

“It’s not our place here in this chamber to decide when it’s appropriate for a woman to decide whether or not she should get an abortion,” said Democratic Sen. Heather Steans of Chicago, the bill’s Senate sponsor.

The measure, which previously cleared the House, now heads to Rauner.

In responding to a questionnaire as a gubernatorial candidate in 2014, Rauner said he disliked existing law restricting taxpayer-funded abortion coverage and that he’d support a legislative effort to reverse the law.

Firefighters honored and remembered in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – Firefighters who died in the line of duty were honored during a ceremony at the state Capitol.

The annual Illinois Fallen Firefighters Memorial and Fire Fighting Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony was held Tuesday in Springfield.

The families of two late firefighters were presented with a gold badge. They were Captain Eric Kohlbauer of the Freeport Rural Fire Protection District and Kenneth Harris, a firefighter and paramedic in Oak Park.

Also, two dozen firefighters received the Firefighter Excellence Award for an act of service in the line of duty. The winners included firefighters from departments in Chicago, Kankakee and Pekin.

Midlothian school honoring 2 late students at prom

MIDLOTHIAN – A Midlothian high school plans to honor two students who died as the class’ “honorary” prom king and queen.

The Daily Southtown reported that Bremen High School in Midlothian will honor Mark Gorman and Paola Zambrano during Friday’s prom. Gorman was hit and killed in October by a vehicle while walking home from Boy Scouts. Zambrano died in 2015 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

Bremen Principal Dave Kibelkis called Gorman and Zambrano “two wonderful kids.” He said the school also will honor them with two empty seats and posthumous diplomas at graduation.

The school still will have a prom court and students are scheduled to vote for king and queen when they enter the dance Friday night at Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park.

Court upholds FOIA decision involving College of DuPage

CHICAGO – An Illinois appellate court has ruled that the College of DuPage Foundation is subject to the state’s open records law and ordered it to turn over a federal subpoena that the Chicago Tribune requested.

The unanimous decision marks the first time an Illinois higher court has ruled in favor of releasing records in possession of a public college’s fundraising organization, the Tribune reported.

The ruling upholds an earlier ruling by a DuPage Circuit Court judge.

“The Tribune is very pleased with the decision, which is a victory for transparency regarding the affairs of government,” said Karen Flax, the newspaper’s vice president of legal. “The Appellate Court’s decision confirms that public bodies – such as the College of DuPage – cannot shield public records by attempting to contract out governmental functions to a third party.”

The newspaper sued the college and the foundation in April 2015 to obtain various documents after its open-records requests

available to privately insured individuals.

But Republicans countered on the floor that asking taxpayers to fund the procedure goes too far, particularly amid the state’s budget impasse.

“Abortion in itself is repulsive,” said Republican Sen. Neil Anderson of Rock Island. “But to use taxpayer dollars is an absolute travesty.”

Sen. Toi Hutchinson, an Olympia Fields Democrat, pointed to legislation she said supports the well-being of children and mothers along with a robust economy that her Republican colleagues have opposed, such as paid sick leave and subsidized child care.

“The single best thing we can do for our economy is to have over 52 percent of its members able to fully participate in the economic stream,” she said.

Democrats also contended the bill’s second prong, which would remove language in current law they say threatens to re-criminalize abortion if Roe v.

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University trustees are poised to choose a new chancellor to lead the Carbondale campus.

A special Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled Wednesday afternoon, and the agenda includes appointing a chancellor for the school’s Carbondale campus.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reported that it’s been nearly three years since the school has had a permanent chancellor. An interim chancellor has been in charge since Rita Cheng left in July 2014 to become president of Northern Arizona University.

Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell’s appointment lasts through June 30.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Days before he was fired by Donald Trump, FBI Director James Comey requested more resources to pursue his investigation into Russia’s election meddling and the possible involvement of Trump associates, U.S. officials said Wednesday, fueling concerns that Trump was trying to undermine a probe that could threaten his presidency.

It was unclear whether word of the Comey request, put to deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, ever made its way to Trump. But the revelation intensified the pressure on the White House from both political parties to explain the motives behind Comey’s stunning ouster.

Trump is the first president since Richard Nixon to fire a law enforcement official overseeing an investigation with ties to the White House. Democrats quickly accused Trump of using Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation as a pretext and called for a special prosecutor into the Russia probe. Republican leaders brushed off the idea as unnecessary.

Defending the firing, White House officials said Trump’s confidence in Comey had been eroding for months. They suggested Trump was persuaded to take the step by Justice Department officials and a scathing memo, written by Rosenstein, criticizing the director’s role in the Clinton investigation.

“Frankly, he’d been considering letting Director Comey go since the day he was elected,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, a sharply different explanation from the day before, when officials put the emphasis on new Justice complaints about Comey.

Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that although he couldn’t be certain the request triggered Comey’s dismissal, he said he believed the FBI “was breathing down the neck of the Trump campaign and their operatives and this was an effort to slow down the investigation.”

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores denied that Comey had asked Rosenstein for more resources for the Russia investigation.

Rauner also ran against his party’s insiders when he launched his campaign, dismissing them as bought and paid for by Springfield’s special interests.

What establishment party support both men did receive mostly came at the end of their general election campaigns. Their personal finances, which allowed them to self-fund, kept them free of establishment taint, and that independence gave both of them credibility as outsiders. As election day neared, some establishment GOP figures decided they’d better swallow their pride and get on board.

The establishment needed the insurgents more than the insurgents needed the establishment.

Billionaire Democrat JB Pritzker isn’t following this pattern as he campaigns for governor. Insiders, elected officials and politically connected union leaders have been jumping on his bandwagon from the get-go, usually after being impressed with Pritzker during one-onone meetings.

The game plan seems pretty obvious.

Pritzker doesn’t want those folks and groups endorsing Chris Kennedy, whose last name still is immensely popular and whose own connections over the decades would’ve guaranteed him support from his party’s elders if Pritzker and his infinite bank account hadn’t stepped in. Kennedy doesn’t have Pritzker’s kind of money, so Kennedy is perceived as needing support from the people and groups who fund and staff the party’s apparatus. At the moment, those folks are streaming toward Pritzker amid a cacophony of whispers (all denied) that House Speaker Michael Madigan is directing the traffic. Starve Kennedy of money and foot soldiers and maybe he’ll drop out.

Kennedy, whose personal wealth is substantial, but nothing like Pritzker’s, has made some half-hearted attempts to claim that endorsements don’t matter whenever he loses them. But he hasn’t yet embraced (or maybe doesn’t even recognize) the role that’s literally being thrust upon him. Kennedy’s originally preferred path of being the widely endorsed “inevitable” candidate now is owned by Pritzker. By default, Kennedy’s now the most prominent “outsider” in the race.

VIEWS Rich Miller After almost two and a half years of Rauner’s rule, the government is in shambles.

Rauner’s first campaign video back in 2013 complained that the state had “the highest unemployment in the Midwest,” and that’s still true today. He pointed to the state’s “lowest credit rating in America,” and that’s only gotten worse. “Springfield is broken; $8,000 in pension debt for every man, woman and child,” Rauner bemoaned in the video. That figure is now $10,000.

So, maybe Illinois voters will yearn for someone who can work with Springfield to solve our massive problems and get us back to a semblance of normalcy after three populist governors in a row couldn’t get anything done.

That appears to be where both Pritzker and Kennedy are going.

If Rauner doesn’t obtain a budget deal, he will simply run against the establishment again, claiming the evil powers that be (Speaker Madigan) have blocked him at every turn, but that he is “very close” to breaking their self-serving logjam. And, indeed, if he is reelected after what could be four years of gridlock, the Democrats will have to start working with him. Democrats claim that Rauner hid his “real” agenda from voters in 2014. But that agenda is now crystal clear to everyone.

Almost half of Illinois Democrats voted for insurgent presidential candidate Bernie Sanders a year ago. A recent poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute showed that Gov. Rauner is slightly more popular than Speaker Madigan in Chicago, of all places.

So, an authentic, independent, populist message from the late Robert Kennedy’s sincere, accomplished and mild-mannered son could very well resonate.

One of the things you can’t help but notice in the press coverage of Kennedy’s Downstate appearances is the reports on crowd size. His family name is packing halls all over the place as locals come out to witness a part of history.

The obvious question is whether Kennedy can sustain this. His name and the hints of his family’s famous accent in his speaking voice are working like a charm for him right now.

But will it last?

If he embraces a different direction, I think the answer could be yes.

To the Editor: True science is open to questioning and alternative ideas.

There is no such thing as settled science. It is inappropriate and unscientific for liberals to silence scientists who disagree with their politically correct view that climate change is a man-made imminent catastrophe.

Unfortunately, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was setup to support the politically correct view rather than to investigate the scientific questions.

Their claim that 97 percent of scientists support their view is bogus. The selected surveyed scientists said climate does change and humans may have some impact, but did not say it was predominately man-made or catastrophic.

UN climate official Ottmar Edenhofer, who chaired the working group on Mitigation of Climate Change, said “One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. We redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate change.”

31,487 American scientists signed a petition that

said “there is no convincing evidence that human release of carbon dioxide … is causing catastrophic heating of earth’s atmosphere … there is substantial evidence that increases in carbon dioxide produces many beneficial effects.”

The Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change disagrees with the IPCC. The American Meteorological Societysurvey revealed no consensus that humans cause global warming. There was an 18-year period from 1997 to 2015 of no warming.

Vikings farmed Greenland because it was warmer in the past; that is why it is called Greenland.

Greenhouse gasses are 95 percent water vapor and only .05 percent CO2. Global temperatures are scientifically correlated with sunspot activity and not with CO2, which is an essential plant nutrient. We can do nothing about water vapor or sunspot activity and CO2 is needed to grow our food.

We should allow open scientific discussion and ignore politically correct alarmism.

Lincoln-Way West grad Bello rides senior season at ISU to NFL shot

When you get to later-round selections, however, they must show in camp that they belong.

That puts undrafted free agents who sign immediately after the draft on a somewhat equal playing field with later-round picks. They go into camp with some hope of making the team.

That’s the opportunity Lincoln-Way West graduate BJ Bello has with the Cleveland Browns. The linebacker from Illinois State was productive in his only season with the Redbirds after transferring from Illinois, and a good showing at the NFL Midwest Regional Scouting Combine in Minneapolis and at the Northwestern Pro Day did not hurt his cause, either.

Bello’s next chance to impress the Browns comes this weekend at the team’s three-day rookie mini-camp.

“They [Browns] told me they’ll have me doing things at the mini-camp where I can use all my tools,” the 6-foot2, 230-pound Bello said. “There will be work in some blitz packages and covering some guys.

“We’ll get into OTAs [organized team activities] right after the minicamp.”

Bello made an impact on the ISU defense in 2016, earning Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team honors. He led the Redbirds with 9.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, and he forced two fumbles.

Continued from page 18 “I felt great about being able to use my year at ISU to show what I can do,” Bello said. “We absolutely played some good competition. We played Northwestern. We had good guys on our team. The level of competition was different overall, though, than in the Big Ten.” Bello played three years of varsity football at Lincoln-Way West, starting at cornerback as a sophomore and at safety as a junior and senior, although he missed much of his junior season with injury.

Illinois signed him to a scholarship, and the Illini “had me transition to linebacker,” Bello said. “I got bigger and maintained my speed.”

He was timed at 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the Northwestern Pro Day. “That helped me out a lot as far as the pro scouts watching me,” he said. “It was the icing on the cake, you might say, after I was able to show my athleticism and productivity last

year at ISU.” Bello said he met with Illinois coaches after his last season there.

“I was told, basically, that I wasn’t going to get the opportunity that I needed,” he said. “I had only one year at ISU, and it definitely opened a lot of gateways for me. I was able to get a lot on film, to show I am able to play different positions.”

The Browns did not draft any linebackers. Bello is among three linebackers who signed with the team as free agents. He will leave his New Lenox home Thursday and head to minicamp.

“It’s always been a dream to play in the NFL,” Bello said. “I never really had a favorite NFL team.

Now I guess the Cleveland Browns are my favorite team.”

While Bello signed as an undrafted free agent, the Joliet area had one player picked in the recent draft.

LSU center Ethan Pocic, a Lemont graduate, was the 58th overall selection, a second-round choice of the Seattle Seahawks. He is at mini-camp this weekend with his new team.

“We’ve really coming together as a team and have improved throughout the season,” Hannion said. “Everybody has their own strengths, and we all work together with the other players on the team. We have a good chance if we play with intensity and believe in ourselves.

We never want to lose on our home field, so we’ll try to keep it that way.”

Porters coach Todd Elkei knows that winning the regional and advancing to their own sectional will be difficult with Plainfield North and Neuqua Valley on the horizon, but he believes his team already has played to the level they’ll need to in order to have a chance.

“Hopefully, we can increase our speed of play and be a little more effective in the final third if we want to do

anything in the playoffs,” Elkei said. “If we play with heart and play like we can, then we’ll be in the games. We’re getting better as we go along, and when our girls play with confidence, they’re one of the better teams around. We played our first game in Iowa against Waunakee, Wisconsin, and I was so impressed with the way we played. It was awesome. The key is getting them to believe that they can play like that day in and day out.”

In the first half, Lockport received good chances from Stephanie Quigley, Jenifer Lotoza, Allyson Fischer, Hansen and Pikulski before the latter briefly gave the hosts a lead.

After the Warriors threatened with nice efforts from Breanna Bembenek, Sara Loichinger and Honan, they got the equalizer after Carissa Knezz found Sarna, who fired in a liner.

In the second half, Madison Mikalauski, Bembenek and Loichinger had the best chances for West, while the Porters countered with threats from Pikulski, Latoza and Hansen. But neither side was able to connect to keep it even after 80 minutes.

LOCKPORT – As the regular portion of the girls soccer season ends, Lincoln-Way West and Lockport are both hopeful that they’ve positioned themselves well for playoff success.

The Warriors and Porters got one final chance to get in a match before next week’s postseason when they squared off Wednesday. Afterward, both had reason to be feeling upbeat since they played to a 1-1 nonconference draw.

Lockport got a goal from Lauren Pikulski in the 35th minute, and West answered with a score from Samantha Sarna in the 38th minute, and neither could get the upper hand after that.

It was the first goal allowed in four matches by the Warriors (12-6-2). Savina Filip, Kate Honan, Olivia Judge and Sarna have anchored a back line that has yielded only 12 goals and helped keeper Erin Toomey to record 13 shutouts on the season.

“We had a huge slump in the beginning of the season, but our seniors

stepped up and said, ‘We need to get out of this,’ and it worked, since we’re a team and we’re playing really good, “Sarna said. “Our defense has become really solid. And we really like to have fun. On our way here, we’re screaming as we sing, and we all get along well, and it’s just a fun team to be on.”

Things will get fun for coach Jeff Theiss’ Warriors if they can win at the Lincoln-Way Central Regional, where they are the fourth seed and the rival Knights are the No. 5 seed. West has won three-straight regionals and four in the past five years.

“It’s been a quality last four games,” Theiss said. “Lockport has a lot of speed, and I thought that we did a great job of putting early pressure on the ball.

The girls were stingy in the back, like they’ve been all season long. Lockport switched the point of attack, and both Olivia and Samantha were very strong in the air, and that nullified a lot of dangerous opportunities. We had some good looks from outside the box, but the shots just weren’t on today. Tactically we’re there, we just need to do a little

Isom names Ortiz to start Slammers’ home opener VIEWS Dick Goss When I talked with Slammers manager Jeff Isom last week, one of the exciting bits of news was how well it appeared having a former major league pitcher on the 2017 season-opening roster was going to work out.

It got even better Wednesday afternoon when I revisited Isom.

Left-hander Joseph Ortiz (he prefers Joseph rather than Joe), who made 32 relief appearances for the Texas Rangers in 2013 and went 2-2 with a 4.23 ERA, not only will be in uniform when the Slammers open at home next Tuesday night against Traverse City, but he will be the starting pitcher.

“We started Joseph in one of our exhibition games, and he went five innings and threw only 56 pitches,” Isom noted. “There was hardly any solid contact against him. He commands his change and slider and changes speeds on his fastball – a lot.

“He threw one fastball 82 [mph], and I thought, ‘uh, oh, what have we got?’ But then the range on the fastball went from 82 to 92. When he needed a strikeout, he ran it up there at 92. He knows how to pitch.”

That will be the first of two starts for Ortiz on the first homestand. His second start should come Sunday, May 21, when the Slammers entertain Schaumburg.

“He’s an interesting story,” Isom said. “He’s Venezuelan, and with all they have going on there, he’s continuing to show he can pitch here. He has great experience, and he will be nothing but outstanding with our younger guys.”

The three pitchers Isom has lined up to start the three games this season-opening weekend at Lake Erie are right-hander Danny Conception on Friday night, lefty Tyler House on Saturday night and right-hander Shane Bryant on Sunday.

Isom said he has not decided on a fifth starter but is not in a hurry because

one will not be needed until Saturday, May 20.

“Last year, we started Liam O’Sullivan out of the bullpen and he wound up being the pitcher of the year,” he said.

“When we need a fifth starter, we’ll see where we are as a staff and go from there.”

In addition to Ortiz’s performance, Isom said the bullpen did a good job in the exhibition season, which he expected with all the holdovers he has there.

He said the starters “did a better job than our starters did last year.

“We ended up going 2-2, or maybe 3-1, in the exhibition season. It’s hard to

tell with the way we play those games.

In the games we lost, we used bubble guys more. We swung the bats very well when we had our regular guys in there.”

One of those regulars is left-handed hitting Puerto Rican outfielder Juan Silva, who played for the Yankees’ Double-A team at Trenton last summer.

If you don’t know the name yet, you will soon.

“Juan Silva was very impressive in the preseason,” Isom said. “He is one of the better hitters I have seen in this league in a long while.”

Silva, holdover Marc Flores and first baseman/third baseman Rock Shoulders all swing from the left side and all figure to hit somewhere in the middle of Isom’s lineup.

“I haven’t decided on a lineup yet, but those guys all have power,” Isom said. “Fans get excited about home runs, and these guys should give us some.

“But what I really like about this team in general is we have a bunch of guys who have been stealing bases.

They like to get on base and run the bases.”

That will make things all the more exciting.

The Slammers’ opening-day roster had not been finalized as of Wednesday afternoon. At that time, catcher Sam Tidaback, a Providence Catholic graduate who was drafted by the Cubs a year ago out of North Georgia, still was on the roster.

IHSA STATE BASS FISHING TOURNAMENT

State bass fishing tournament delayed for safety reasons STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS Minooka No. 1, Minooka No. 2, Plainfield South No. 1, Providence Catholic and Reed-Custer No. 1 all will represent the Joliet area in the IHSA State Bass Fishing Tournament, but when that will be is uncertain.

The IHSA announced Wednesday that the tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Carlyle Lake in downstate Carlyle, has been postponed due to potentially dangerous water levels and will be rescheduled at Carlyle later this spring.

The IHSA Board of Directors made the decision to postpone the finals based upon discussions with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who oversee Carlyle Lake. IHSA staff members also visited the lake to assess the situation.

“We cannot hold the tournament as scheduled on May 19 and 20 due to

safety concerns,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said. “We hope to make a decision on the new state final date as soon as possible so that Carlyle and the qualifying schools can plan accordingly. We obviously can’t control the weather, but we can control safety, and that will always be paramount in our decision-making.”

The IHSA was forced to postpone the state final tournament in 2011 and 2013 when Southern Illinois was hit by a series of storms that produced high water levels. At that time, the tournament was conducted in early May but was moved back two weeks, in part, to help with weather-related situations.

“This is a unique tournament with unique obstacles,” IHSA Associate Executive Director and Bass Fishing Administrator Kurt Gibson said.

“Carlyle Lake has begun to release water to lower its levels, so we think we will have a new date scheduled

soon. We have navigated similar situations in the past and managed to conduct great state final tournaments.

I have no doubt that will happen again in the coming weeks.”

Minooka No. 1 won the Heidecke Lake Sectional and qualified for the state meet with a total weight of 7 pounds, 12 ounces. Stan Tischer is the coach, Dan Harris is the driver and the fishermen are Wyatt Pazdro, Alec Berens, Austin Day and Luke Hanouw.

Minooka No. 2 was second in that sectional with a total weight of 6 pounds, 11 ounces. Tischer also coached that team, with Joe Tisher the driver. Participants were AJ Wojtwoicz, Anthony Fazio, Colin Wurzinger and Brendon Dykstra.

Plainfield South No. 1 qualified for state in the third spot with 3 pounds, 5 ounces. Coach and driver Patrick Scanlan worked with Ryan Park, Tommy McDonald, Michael Bobich

and Jack Bloomquist.

Coal City No. 2 is the alternate from the Heidecke Lake Sectional.

Tim Hanley was the coach, Chad Planeta the driver and Austin Planeta and Bret Blecha the fishermen. Coal City No. 1 was fifth with 2 pounds, 14 ounces. Morris No. 1 had 2 pounds, 10 ounces and Morris No. 2 totaled 15 ounces.

Providence won the sectional title at the Des Plaines River Big Basin Marina. The Celtics finished with 8 pounds, 3 ounces. Scott Orban is the coach and driver. Tyler Bomba and Nick Katello made up the team.

Reed-Custer No. 1 totaled 10 pounds, 13 ounces to finish second behind Bradley’s 11 pounds, 2 ounces at the Braidwood Lake Sectional and qualify for state. The Comets’ coach is Erik Fredericksen, with Brett Wysock the driver and Coty Mixner, Josh Czerep and Zach Bragg the fishermen.

He would be starting at any top IHSA program. When we were ranked No. 1 in the state at Lockport in ’85 and ’86, Thomas would have started on those teams and been able to help us out. He is that good of a player.”

USF softball gets a bump up in coaches’ poll and No. 1 seed SUBMITTED REPORTS KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After jumping up two spots to No. 9 in the final regular-season NAIA Coaches’ Poll earlier in the day, the University of St. Francis softball team learned Wednesday night that it will be the top seed in the four-team, double-elimination Bowling Green Bracket. The opening round begins Monday and will run through Wednesday.

Seeded second is host Campbellsville (Ky.), the No. 11 ranked team in the nation, followed by No. 3 seed Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan, both of which are among others receiving votes in the final poll. The Saints will meet Indiana Wesleyan (41-13) at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The winner of the tournament joins the other nine Opening Round champions at the NAIA World Series scheduled May 26 to June 1 in Clermont, Florida.

Making its second trip to the national tournament in three years, the Saints are 41-5 and coming off the program’s first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title.

CHANNAHON – The Families of Faith Christian Academy baseball team entered this week with a 20-3 record.

Thomas Larson was batting .627, Alex Avila .516, Jaylin Barnes .449, Thomas Daufenbach .373, Aaron Shaw .370, Travis Barr .356, and a few others were above .300.

Larson had 53 RBIs, Avila 39, Josiah Bestler 30 and Barnes 27.

Larson, the No. 1 pitcher, was 6-0 with a 2.56 ERA. Avila was 3-0 with a 1.08 and Daufenbach, the staff work horse, was 4-2.

The numbers are impressive, but more than anything else, are they a function of the competition a small Christian school faces?

Screaming Eagles coach Tim Shaw recognizes the legitimacy of the question. However, he said some of his players could be very helpful to strong, large-school programs.

He should know.

Shaw graduated from Lockport in 1986 and was a .400-plus career hitter there. He played a season of baseball at Lewis.

“I played for Clyde Odle and Jim Hall at Lockport,” Shaw said. “Our 1985 and ’86 teams both were ranked No. 1 in the state. We had some great players.

“When I got called up to the varsity as a sophomore, Ron Coomer was on the team. I don’t know that I have ever seen anyone hit the ball as consistently hard as he did. If anyone was going to

“Alex Avila and Aaron Shaw are strong freshman players,” continued Tim Shaw, who also has coached his daughter in competitive, fast-pitch softball for years. “They could play at high schools on any level.

“Aaron [Shaw] is our leadoff hitter.

He’s third in the state in stolen bases as a freshman. Thomas [Larson] and Jaylin [Barnes] are our 2-3 hitters. Alex Avila is in the fourth spot. It’s a different era now than when I played. Alex is a 6-2 freshman. He would have been one of our biggest seniors at Lockport.”

The Screaming Eagles’ top players are on travel teams in the summer.

“Thomas plays with the Illinois Hawks,” Tim Shaw said. “My son and Avila play travel ball, too. They have a good baseball IQ. They all have been around the game a long time, and that translates to the field.”

They help lead a team that has taken the motto, “Never Give Up,” to heart.

“The team accepted that motto, and we won 19 straight games; the team record had been five,” Tim Shaw said.

Team manager Tom Larson noted that Families of Faith is the No. 1 seed in the Illinois Christian Schools Conference Tournament this weekend at Olivet Nazarene. The Screaming Eagles won the regular-season conference title.

Next weekend, Families of Faith, located at 24666 W. Eames St. in Channahon, will host a “state” invitational, with teams from Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri also in the field. That will conclude the best season in school history.

Cubs stumble into series vs. Cardinals

DENVER – This is not a playoff team.

The Cubs are a .500, third-place team as they take a day off ahead of their weekend series against the division-leading Cardinals – having lost five of their past six games and three of their last four series.

Their once-vaunted fielding has been suspect. Their once-dominant starting pitching has been inconsistent. Their leadoff man is batting .195 and leads the team in strikeouts.

On one hand, there’s a lot of time left this season for the defending World Series champs to get things right.

On the other hand, it’s starting to get a little late to say it’s still early.

A playoff team? The way they’ve looked so far, dropping to 17-17 after Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to rookie German Marquez and the Rockies at Coors Field?

“I don’t think so,” said right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who was tagged with the loss despite pitching well into the seventh inning. “It’s not clear-cut. I wouldn’t say we are, and if we were to get in the playoffs right now the way we’re playing, it wouldn’t go too well.”

If there’s reason for Cubs optimism for what’s on the 2017 horizon, Hendricks (2-2) might be one of the bigger reasons.

The only runs he allowed Wednesday were an unearned run in the fourth on Javy Baez’s fielding error at shortstop and two runs that scored after he left the game in the seventh – when Marquez inexplicably got his bat around on a twostrike, 94 mph fastball above the letters from Carl Edwards Jr. and wound up with a two-run single with two out.

“That’s just one of those non-fortuitous moments,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who said it shouldn’t have mattered what pitch was thrown. “That guy can’t hit.”

If there was a fortuitous part of the game for the Cubs, it was Hendricks – last year’s major league ERA leader – who said he felt closer to last year’s form Wednesday than he has all season.

After struggling early, he has a 1.52 ERA in his past four starts.

That start followed John Lackey’s seven-inning scoreless start in Tuesday night’s victory in the second game of a doubleheader. It’s the first set of backto-back quality starts for the Cubs since Brett Anderson (now on the disabled list) and Hendricks did it April 24 and 25.

Until then, the starters drag a 4.56 rotation ERA into St. Louis after returning their top four starters from a group that led the majors with a 2.96 ERA last year.

They also leave Colorado with a streak of five consecutive games allowing at least one unearned run (eight total in the five games) – just the latest shaky stretch for a group of fielders that lapped the majors in almost every defensive metric last year.

“We may not pitch that good (as in 2016), but I know we’re going to pitch better than we have to this point,” Maddon said. “We may not play defense to that level, but we’re still going to play really good defense, and it’s still going to be good enough. We’ve just got to get back closer to the levels that we’re capable of.”

The Cubs had a well-documented short offseason and consequently planned for a slow-burn buildup in spring training.

They had emotional banner and ring ceremonies the second week of the season and a more recent gauntlet of rain delays and postponements, an 18-inning game Sunday and back-to-back series against hot, first-place teams.

Celtics 123, Wizards 101: At Boston, Avery Bradley scored a playoff career-high 29 points, and the Boston Celtics beat the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night to take a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Al Horford added 19 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Isaiah Thomas was also active, scoring 18 points and handing out nine assists.

Game 6 is Friday night in Washington, where the Wizards easily won their two games. If the Celtics win, they would move on to host the Cleveland Cavaliers to open the Eastern Conference finals.

Game 7 would be in Boston on Monday.

Boston led by as many as 26 points,

negating Washington’s physicality by spreading the floor and knocking down 16 3-pointers.

John Wall had 21 for the Wizards, who haven’t won a playoff game in Boston since 1982. The Wizards scored the first four points of game, but that was followed by a 16-0 run by the Celtics.

WASHINGTON – Marc-Andre Fleury turned back the clock with a brilliant 29-save shutout, Bryan Rust and Patric Hornqvist scored and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 2-0 in Game 7 on Wednesday night to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

The defending champion Penguins are eight victories away from another Stanley Cup and will have home-ice advantage against the Ottawa Senators.

The Presidents’ Trophy-winning Capitals failed to get beyond the second round for the seventh time in as many chances in the Alex Ovechkin era.

Rust was again a hero in a crucial game for Pittsburgh, scoring his eighth goal in 12 career games facing elimination or with the chance to eliminate an opponent. Fleury looked like his old self from the start of the series if not his 2009 Cup run in frustrating the Capitals. Braden Holtby made 26 saves in a losing effort.

Despite it being the second round, this Game 7 had the feel of a deciding game of the Stanley Cup Final with the top two teams in the NHL facing off.

After Pittsburgh took a 3-1 series lead,

Washington roared back to tie it and seemed to have all the confidence.

When the Capitals had the game’s first four shots, Fleury was there to weather the storm and the Penguins responded with the next six. It took until 8:49 of the second period for Pittsburgh to silence the crowd as a failed clear by Matt Niskanen got the puck from Sidney Crosby to Jake Guentzel to Rust for his fifth goal of the playoffs.

by Ovechkin in the second period. It was so close, Ovechkin started to raise his arms thinking he had scored, and Fleury’s wide smile could be seen through his mask.

It remained a one-goal game until another failed clear by Washington’s Kevin Shattenkirk and Ovechkin. The puck ended up on Hornqvist’s stick, and the Swedish forward put a backhander short side on Holtby 4:14 into the third to make it 2-0.

The Capitals tried everything, including Brooks Orpik fighting Scott Wilson midway through the third, but couldn’t mount a comeback to turn the tide. Fans booed the final seconds of another home Game 7 loss.

Young drivers could create changing of guard at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles walks a fine line each May. Like many longtime Indianapolis 500 fans, Boles reveres the history of the race. As a promoter, he also understands the series needs new blood to expand the fan base and help the 500 keep its title as the world’s largest single-day sporting event.

As the 2.5-mile oval revs up for its second century of racing, it may the perfect moment to transition from familiar fan favorites to the next generation of winners.

“What makes this place special is the history and the tradition. But what will make it better going into the future are the future winners and a lot of them are young,” Boles said last week.

“The young drivers are our future.”

There are plenty of reasons to catch the new wave.

a life-threatening injury two years ago with a win at the Brickyard.

Marco Andretti again will try to break the family’s Indy curse. His father and team owner, Michael, led more laps than any other non-winner of the race. The 30-year-old’s grandfather, Mario, won once in 29 starts, in 1969.

Graham Rahal has two top-five finishes in nine Indy starts, and a victory would allow the 28-year-old to join Unser and Al Unser Jr. as the only father-son winners of the race. Rahal’s father and team owner, Bobby, won in 1986.

Even the 32-year-old Pagenaud, the current points leader, is a relatively new face to IndyCar fans. He’s only had five full seasons in the circuit and will try to defend his IndyCar Grand Prix title in Saturday’s race.

Boles has his own personal connection with his 25-year-old stepson, Conor Daly, trying to make his fourthstraight 500 start.

It’s a crucial month for the IndyCar Series, one that could signal a changing of the guard.

“It could be,” Boles said. “It’s the young drivers that connect you to race fans. But it’s a fine line to walk.”

 

JOLIET – Each Sunday, Karyl Holmstrom drives from Plainfield to attend church on Broadway Street in Joliet.

Holmstrom can’t envision belonging anywhere, but St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, which will celebrate its 160th anniversary May 20 and May 21.

Her family membership dates back to the 19th century. Holmstrom herself recalls Sunday school classes so large, dividers were put up each week to divide the classes. She fondly remembers the annual Christmas programs.

“This is my second home,” Holmstrom said.

Phyllis Powell, 82, of Crest Hill, feels the same way. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Peter’s.

She raised her two children there.

Powell, too, called St. Peter’s “home” and spoke highly of all the pastors she’s known, especially the Rev. Karl Hess, the current pastor.

“He listens,” Powell said.

An aging congregation, dwindling attendance and changing demographics are St. Peter’s current challenges, although many mainstream denominations also are facing the same issues, Hess said.

“Most of our members remember the day when the church was at its strongest numerically. I’ve been here 10 years and attendance has declined by half,” Hess said. “When you think how many large- to medium-size churches have closed just in my lifetime in Joliet, we should be grateful.”

Responding to those challenges is part of how the church seeks direction. Certainly outreach is part of the

St. Peter’s also supports the food pantry at St. John the Baptist Church in

Joliet, Hess said.

“We don’t have plans to pack up and go someplace else,” he said. “I think most people at St. Peter see our mission and our place as being where we are close to downtown Joliet. If you’re getting funding from a denominational organization, it’s a little bit easier, but we’re not. Still, this

congregation on the basis of the Augsburg Confession.

Mark Kroll, St. Peter’s historian, said the church’s first members were all German-speaking, although not necessarily German-born. The first worship services were German, with English gradually working its way into the hymnals in the early 1900s.

“The first English services were in 1912 and they picked up after the first world war,” Kroll said. “After 1942, there were occasional German services at Christmas and Good Friday, that sort of thing, but not on a regular basis.”

Kroll said one longtime tradition has endured and that’s St. Peter’s longstanding relationship with WJOL. “Back in the ’20s, WJOL broadcast a choir concert of St. Peter’s.

Shortly after that, in April 1926, it started broadcasting our Sunday morning services,” Kroll said. “We think we have the oldest continuous Sunday morning religious broadcast in the country that’s still being broadcasted, although it’s not live anymore; we tape it.”

But even as St. Peter’s broadens

St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Joliet was founded 1857. Its first school opened the following year. The church will close the day school at the end of the 2017 school year. dedicated Jan. 4, 1903. The cost was $28,000, the website stated.

Trained as a secondary education teacher, Pautz came to St. Peter’s in 1973 to teach kindergarten in the morning and seventh and eighth grade in the afternoon. By then, double-graded classrooms were the school’s norm, she said.

Pautz feels students, overall, leave St. Peter’s well-versed in the Christian faith and well-prepared for higher education. She feels the actual number of students is irrelevant.

“I think people think you have to be big and showy and make money to be successful. St. Peter’s has never made money,” Pautz said. “That’s never been our goal as long as I’ve been here. Teaching children the way

of salvation so they can work in the world – that’s been our goal.”

The Rev. Karl Hess, St. Peter’s church pastor, echoed Pautz’s sentiments. Hess said the school is a large part of St. Peter’s identity. It was built at a time when people insisted their children be steeped in traditional Lutheran doctrine, a time of “more vigorous Christianity in general.”

“They had a commitment to the truth in a way we’re afraid of or find offensive today,” Hess said.

Hess wonders how they found the means to construct and support schools.

“They were not rich people,” Hess said. “They were working class individuals.”

its outreach, Hess feels it’s important for St. Peter’s to remember its first mission – to offer a traditional Lutheran experience for those who desire it.

Hess said one young 20-something member from Plainfield is loyal to St. Peter’s for this reason – and is concerned his own children will never experience traditional Lutheranism.

Powell, for one, intends to keep doing her part to ensure St. Peter’s endures. She doesn’t belong to any one organization in the church.

St. Peter’s school from kindergarten through eighth grade, has mixed feelings about the closing. The loss saddens him but he prefers celebrating what it was.

“Joliet is losing an institution,” Fischer said, “not just because of the historical value, but because of the great place of learning that it is – all the people that have come and gone through St. Peter’s in all those 140 years of the school.”

Fisher said his mother, Kim Fischer of Joliet, still teaches at St Peter’s and that Kim was his health and gym teacher.

“It was interesting because I also had my sister in class with me,” Max said, “but [Kim] was a good teacher, just the way she was able to separate being mom and teacher. It was very easy for her to be Mrs. Fischer and to be mom. And she had the ability to convey Biblical messages even into topics like health.”

Max said Pautz, who also taught classes, as well as another teacher, Valerie Schoen, made learning fun for him, which influenced his career choice. Max is currently attending Concordia University in Wisconsin and studying to be a teacher.

“Looking back, I appreciate the way they prepared us, not just in the field of mathematics and science, but in giving me life skills, instilling [in] me the love of learning and creating a faith in me that I still have to this day,” Max said.

JOLIET – At 82, Phyllis Powell of Crest Hill easily recalls her grade school days in a building that later was a nursing home.

“Of course, we prayed in the morning,” Powell said, “along with the Pledge of Allegiance, which we were allowed to do.”

Powell, a lifelong member of St. Peter Evangelical Church in Joliet, is recalling the church’s school, which was located down the street from the church when Powell attended.

St. Peter’s began its school shortly after the church opened 160 years ago and will permanently close it at the end of this school year. The current enrollment is nine students, principal Claudia Pautz said.

Pautz said the highest she’s seen enrollment is 125, which has gradually dwindled in the last 15 to 20 years.

“I’m sure it was huge in the ’50s and ’60s,” Pautz said.

According to the St. Peter’s website, the church pastors served as the school’s initial teachers, with the “first called” teacher coming to Joliet in 1869.

A frame structure at 216 N. Broadway St. was the site of the original school until the congregation decided to build a modern school, which also housed several societies and organizations, the website stated.

The cornerstone for that building was laid May 11, 1902. The completed structure, an old limestone building on South Broadway Street, was

Choose diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods

• protein sources high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna.

You don’t have to completely cut out beef. But use it sparingly, more as a side dish rather than the main event. Lose the sunflower, canola and corn oils and use olive oil instead. Satisfy your sweet tooth with strawberries, cherries, raspberries, apples or blueberries. When you need a snack, swap out that bag of potato chips for a handful of almonds or walnuts.

While it’s never too late to change your diet for the better, research here at UCLA suggests it can’t be done too soon. According to the findings of a recent study, women who ate a diet high in inflammatory foods during their adolescent years had a statistically greater risk of developing pre-menopausal breast cancer as adults. The thinking is chronic inflammation associated with diet contributed to the increase in breast cancer risk.

The research into inflammation and diet has good news, too. Participants in a clinical trial at Ohio State University who ate an anti-inflammatory diet high in fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains did better on bone density tests than did their chips- and sugar-eating counterparts.

How to move forward? There’s no shortage of books and cookbooks devoted to anti-inflammatory eating. Grab your library card and hit the stacks – the results will be both healthful and delicious.

Dear Doctors: Can the food we eat affect chronic inflammation in the body?

Dear Reader: In our previous column, we addressed the first half of a two-part question about inflammation – what it is, and how it can be affected by diet. In answering the first half of the question, we discussed the two main types of inflammation and how they take place.

To (briefly) recap: Inflammation is the body’s immune response to a perceived threat. Acute inflammation, a short-lived reaction to injury, trauma or infection, causes swelling, redness, and a sensation of heat and pain. Chronic inflammation, a low-level reaction, takes place below the threshold of pain.

As a result, it tends to fly under the radar.

But unlike acute inflammation, which abates when the threat has been neutralized, chronic inflammation continues. It has been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.

Does what we eat have an effect on chronic inflammation? Research shows yes, components of certain foods can activate the inflammatory response, and others inhibit it.

Unfortunately, many staples of the modern diet encourage inflammation. Refined carbohydrates and processed foods such as chips, sodas, sugary breakfast cereals, lunch meats, fried foods, red meat, candy bars, breakfast pastries and that addictive blended mocha with a swirl of whipped cream all have an inflammatory effect.

Foods that combat inflammation are high in natural antioxidants and contain polyphenols, which are beneficial compounds found in plants. These include: • dark leafy greens such as spinach, collard greens and kale; • vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli; • beans, which are high in fiber and antioxidants; • whole grains, which are high in fiber and help with inflammation; and

Dear Abby: We DEAR ABBY have some great friends we have Jeanne known for five Phillips years. Our families enjoy time together, and although the friendship started through our kids, I now get together with the other mom outside of kid-related activities.

Her son, “Michael,” and my daughter (ages 12) are best friends in middle school, and I truly care for him, as well as his family.

I have assumed for a long time Michael is gay. Since late last year, he’s been having a lot of trouble with a certain group of boys who call him gay – among other names – and bully him.

His mom knows he is different, but his dad is deep in denial, doing his best to force his son to associate with this group of kids because they are “jocks” and popular. Michael hangs out with and is most comfortable with girls. It has always been this way, in spite of his parents’ attempts to find him a boy group to fit into.

The bullying is escalating and, while his dad remains in denial, his mom is telling Michael to ignore it and not draw attention to himself for fear it may get worse.

I’m scared for the boy. He is the always-smiling, happy-go-lucky kid on the outside, but there’s no way he can be feeling that way on the inside being on the receiving end of this kind of abuse every day. I have encouraged his mom to talk to school authorities, but she refuses. We have never spoken directly about the possibility Michael may be gay because I can feel the fear and denial in what she isn’t saying. What can I do? – His B.F.F.’s Mom Dear Mom: It is tragic that Michael’s parents can’t accept their son for who he is, rather than who they would like him to be. That’s why it is absolutely vital you befriend that boy to the best of your ability. Contact PFLAG (pflag.org) and request information about how to support a young person who is more than likely LGBT. Let the boy know you love him just the way he is and being different isn’t wrong. If you do, it could mean the difference between life and death – and that’s no exaggeration.

In today’s deal, look first at the East hand. With both sides vulnerable, the dealer on your right opens one spade. Would you pass, make a takeout double or overcall one notrump?

Then look at the North hand.

With the opponents maintaining a respectful silence, you open one spade, and partner responds one forcing no-trump, showing 6-12 points. (He will have three spades only with 10-12 points.) What would you rebid?

This deal was played 16 times at Bridge Base Online. Surprisingly, no East, human or robot, entered the auction, which was a losing pass here because East-West were cold for five hearts. (If you do bid, I think one notrump is better than double. I dislike takeout doubles with 4-3-3-3 shape.)

At numerous tables, North rebid two spades, and South continued with three diamonds, which ended the auction.

One North, who requested anonymity, did not like the quality of his spade suit, so rebid two clubs, which promised only three cards in the suit, but then his hand would normally have had 5=2=3=3 or 5=3=2=3 distribution. After South rebid two diamonds, North kept up his good work by passing -- and getting the only North-South plus score!

The play was not testing. South lost one spade, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. The seventh diamond was protection against being tapped in hearts.
