Police: Investigation into Sema’j Crosby’s death continuing

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Will County Sheriff’s police continue to investigate the death of a 1-year-old girl last month at her Joliet Township home.

But the next steps include waiting for the testing results of Sema’j Crosby’s autopsy, which is still expected to take three to four weeks. “[The investigation] is not at an impasse,” Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said Tuesday. “We are continuing to follow up on any new info that may come up but right now four of the people we need to talk to have retained lawyers.”

On the evening of April 25, Sema’j’s mother, Sheri Gordon, reported her missing from her home at 309 Louis Road in the Preston Heights area. Investigators and volunteers searched the neighborhood the next day, but her body was found about midnight April 27 under a couch after police were allowed to search the home.

Roxy, one of the sheriff’s canine units, was brought to the scene and reportedly indicated narcotics were in the trunk. Deputies searched the trunk and found 20 wrapped kilos of cocaine inside, according to the news release.

The cocaine has a street value of $1.13 million.

All three were arrested on charges of delivery of drugs and booked into the Will County Jail.

REC CENTER’S FUTURE OUTLINED Another gym could be added to East Side facility

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The future East Side Recreation Center has been slow in starting, and it might not even be done when it’s finished – but that’s by design.

At a community meeting last month, Joliet Park District Executive Director Tom Carstens described a facility that can be converted to different uses and expanded after it opens.

“This building is really flexible and can convert into a lot of things,” Carstens told what appeared to be a satisfied audience during the meeting April 27.

Joliet Park District executive director been scheduled for November 2018, but Carstens said the facility is more likely to open by August 2018.

Much attention has been focused on the project.

Will County Board Minority Leader Herbert Brooks Jr. noted at the community meeting that the promise of the recreation center did play a

role in passage of the 2014 referendum to raise $19.5 million to pay for park improvements.

“There were people in this room who worked on that referendum,” Brooks said.

The East Side Recreation Center will cost $7.5 million.

The 30,677-square-foot recreation center is going on 3 acres on the south end of Nowell Park. The entrance will be off Mills Road.

Carstens described a pretty tight fit to avoid building on a flood plain – a necessity that delayed construction as the park district mapped out the construction site. But even with those parameters, he said, there is room for expansion.

The field house

The 15,000-square-foot field house inside the recreation center is planned for the equivalent of two gym floors.

But the building is designed so that a third gym floor could be added to create a 22,000-square-foot field house.

Even as it is planned now, the field house has space for two high schoolsized basketball courts, two volleyball courts and an indoor soccer field. Two batting cages suspended from the roof can be lowered for baseball practice.

The perimeter of the field house will have an indoor walking track, which was not part of the original design.

Rung named CEO of Shaw Media

browland@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Longtime Johnsburg resident John Rung has been tapped to take the reins of Sterling-based Shaw Media, publisher of close to 100 print and digital publications in Illinois and Iowa.

The Shaw Media Board of Directors named Rung CEO of the company Thursday at the company’s annual meeting. He is the first non-family member to hold that role at the third oldest continuously owned and operated family newspaper company in the nation.

The company now known as Shaw Media was founded in 1851 by Benjamin Flower Shaw.

Rung, 54, had been president of Shaw Media since 2013. Before that, he had served as the company’s chief operating officer. Rung has been with the company 20 years and has served in a variety of management roles, including as publisher of the Northwest Herald. Rung replaces Thomas D. “Tom” Shaw, who announced last month that he would be retiring in May. Shaw will remain on the company’s board.

“The difference between being the CEO and what I’ve been doing the past few years is a much higher level of communication with the Board of Directors, the Trust and with the Shaw family,” Rung said in an interview in his office at the Northwest Herald. “I will also be more responsible for acquisitions, investments and diversification.”

The change won’t affect readers of the company’s print and digital publications, although Rung said he planned to invest more in the company’s newsgathering efforts.

“I’ve been in charge of operations for several years now and this transition has been in process for the last three years,” Rung said. “Vice President J. Tom Shaw oversees our suburban operations, and Jim Ringness is the general manager of the Northwest Herald. As Tom has been transferring his responsibilities to me, I have been delegating more authority to J. Tom and Jim. This has been a well-thought-out transition, and I credit Tom Shaw for that foresight.”

Tom Shaw said Rung is the right person to lead the growing company.

Rung said he has learned some key business skills from Tom Shaw over the years.

“First off, I can say with complete sincerity that Tom is the most decent and thoughtful person I have ever known,” Rung said. “As a younger man, I was extremely aggressive and did not hesitate to take action. I’ve learned from

Tom that patience and consideration are extremely valuable traits.

“I think about the recent situation with United Airlines. If the CEO of United had a more basic initial response – something along the lines of, ‘We are concerned and we are investigating’ – he would have given the company some time to better understand the public’s outcry over the situation,” Rung said. “His knee-jerk, defensive reaction wound up having very negative consequences for his company. A few years ago, that’s probably what I would have done. Because of Tom’s mentorship, I think I’m in a better position for a more appropriate response to a crisis.”

Shaw Media has about 550 employees at newspapers, magazines and other publications in northern Illinois and Iowa. Its daily newspaper holdings include the Joliet Herald-News, the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, and the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb.

Like print and digital media companies around the globe, Shaw Media faces challenges as the power of traditional media outlets continues to evolve in the digital era.

“As you can imagine, we spend a great deal of time discussing that topic,” Rung said. “We have a plan that we call ‘Four Corners.’ We see our print and digital newspaper products becoming

increasingly focused on local issues.

“We are aggressively pursuing strategic acquisitions, and we are launching new product lines that mesh well with our community newspapers. A perfect example of that would be Pro Football Weekly, a product that has seen revenue and audience increase for three consecutive years.”

Rung, who lives in Johnsburg with his wife, Rachel, and three children, said the printed newspaper won’t disappear anytime soon.

“I don’t see the printed newspaper dying, but it will continue to evolve,” he said. “Newspapers have to be more focused and we have to provide more depth on important issues. We might not be first with a story, but we can be best. That is a difficult objective when you consider how classified ads have migrated away from newspapers, combined with the struggles retailers are facing. We have to become more valuable to our readers at the same time our ad revenue is decreasing. That is not an easy task, but it’s exciting, and it’s what I’ve signed on for, so bring it on.”

Outside of the office, Rung is an amateur triathlete who competes in three or four triathlons a season, down from about 15 a season at his peak. He’s an avid sports fan – particularly football and the Chicago Bears.

Presence Saint Joseph nurses take strike vote

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Nurses at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center are taking a strike vote through Wednesday.

The earliest the nurses would strike is May 22 and three negotiation sessions are scheduled this week, said a spokesman with the Illinois Nurses Association, which represents more than 800 nurses at the Joliet hospital.

The nurses’ current contract expires at the end of Saturday, but negotiations could continue after that without a strike, INA spokesman Chris Martin said.

“The strike vote does not guarantee that a strike will occur – only that the members have signalled to the [negotiating] team that they are willing to go on strike if negotiations deteriorate further.”

JOLIET – Route 66, once the main roadway from Chicago to Los Angeles, is in danger of losing its place in the National Park Service’s Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.

Landmarks Illinois, a statewide nonprofit that has been in existence for 45 years and has 256 landmark saves to its credit, has launched an effort to make sure preservation of the route continues.

The organization believes that, in the current political climate, the program is not expected to be renewed.

The program has provided technical assistance, cost-share grants and corridor planning since its creation in 1999, and is set to legislatively terminate in 2019.

Route 66 may have lost some of its flare with the creation of the Interstate system in 1956. Landmarks Illinois says there was economic loss in the towns the route passes through because travelers flocked to a faster form of cross-country automobile transportation.

Efforts to keep the route alive have persisted in other states, while Illinois Route 66 was designated a National

Scenic Byway in 2005 to promote tourism and combat the deterioration and loss of the character of the route.

Recently, leaders and stakeholders along the route developed the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership as a collaborative organization to improve promotion, preservation, education and economic development along the entirety of Route 66, which passes through Joliet and neighboring communities.

The 100th anniversary of Route 66 is coming in nine years, but lawmakers such as Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Peoria, have filed legislation to designate Route 66 as a National Historic Trail.

The proposal, H.R. 801, would provide a permanent program to preserve, promote and economically revitalize Route 66 if enacted, according to Landmarks Illinois.

Frank Butterfield, director of Landmarks Illinois’ Springfield office, said the state sees benefits from Route 66’s cultural heritage and economic development efforts.

“When visitors, both domestic and international, are surveyed they say the want to see neon signs, old motels and other components that make Route 66 unique,” Butterfield said. “It gets them to stay longer.”

JOLIET – A Channahon Township man accused of killing his girlfriend’s son hours after he was released from prison appeared in court Tuesday.

James F. Hess, 65, has been charged with first-degree murder in the April 14 death of James F. Nathan A. Hofkamp. Hess On Tuesday, substitutions and conflicts transferred Hess’ case between four judges before it finally was assigned to Judge Dave Carlson.

On April 14, Nathan Hofkamp was released on parole for 2016 theft and aggravated assault convictions.

His mother, Kathy Hofkamp, held a small party at the residence she shared with Hess in the 25000 block of Canal Road.

According to a wrongful death suit filed last week on behalf of Nathan Hofkamp’s daughter, Hess, Kathy and Nathan “had an argument

over whether the party should continue or whether everyone should go to bed with [Hess] insisting everyone should go to bed.”

Hess allegedly retrieved a handgun from the basement and pointed it at Kathy Hofkamp and Nathan Hofkamp. When Nathan Hofkamp “went to disarm” Hess, he was shot, according to the lawsuit.

Hess was released from the Will County Jail after posting 10 percent of his $1 million bond and has been subject to an order of protection from Kathy Hofkamp. Hess was not allowed within 1,000 feet of Hofkamp or their residence, but on Tuesday his lawyers filed a motion in another courtroom to have Hess return to his house.

“He has no interest in contacting Ms. Hofkamp, but the property is in Hess and his daughter’s name, not hers,” defense attorney Jeff Tomczak said.

Judge Elizabeth Hoskins-Dow ordered Hofkamp to relinquish the property to Hess in the next 30 days.

Hess will appear before Carlson for a pretrial hearing in June.

Returning trustees and newcomer sworn in to New Lenox Board

Shaw Media correspondent Longtime New Lenox board Trustees Annette Bowden and Dave Smith, as well as formerly appointed Trustee Doug Finnegan and newcomer Jasen Howard, were sworn into office Monday night.

Bowden, Smith and Howard were the only candidates on the ballot for three full, four-year term positions. Bowden received almost 36 percent of the vote in last month’s election, with Smith and Howard receiving 33 percent and 31 percent, respectively.

Finnegan was appointed by Mayor Tim Baldermann in July 2015 for a two-year term to fill the vacated seat of Nancy Dye, who resigned three months after re-election to take on a new role in the village. He ran unopposed and was elected to a two-year unexpired term.

Baldermann congratulated and commended all four trustees.

“Putting your name on a ballot is an

extremely difficult thing to do, especially in a time of social media and in a time where some segments of the press and media are only interested in writing negativity and, in a time where it has become increasingly more difficult to make people happy,” Baldermann said.

Howard, an electrician who works out of Chicago, ran against three incumbents in 2015 and lost. He now takes over the seat of Emily Johnson, who chose not to run this year.

Johnson was appointed in 2014 to the vacated seat of now Will County Board member Ray Tuminello and then ran successfully in the April 2015 elections against a local businesswoman to complete that term.

Howard grew up in Manhattan and Frankfort and is a Lincoln-Way High School graduate. He moved to New Lenox in 2010, where he lives with his wife, Ingrid, and 18-month-old daughter, Vivian.

New Metra station plans moving ahead

The new village board approved two contracts in conjunction with the proposed new Metra station.

Trustees unanimously approved a $304,686 contract for engineering services with Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd., and a $139,850 contract for architectural design services with Tria Architecture Inc. According to a timeline attached with the Tria contract, a design for the station should be completed by February 2018, with the permitting and bidding processes scheduled for March through May. Construction would begin in summer of 2018 after the village board approves a bidding contract in May 2018,

While keeping the “small-town feel of the downtown” and beautification of Route 30 and Cedar Road is a priority for Howard, he said he also wants to continue with the progress of new development in the village, particularly around the Silver Cross Hospital campus.

“When you have a government that runs efficiently, and beautification [of the village] then business will come in and help to supplement those costs, “ Howard said.

He added that he wants to lend his experience from his job, which includes working on energy savings and efficiency on construction sites, to future projects in New Lenox.

Four New Lenox police officers were also sworn in to new positions Monday night.

Louis Alessandrini, formerly a detective sergeant, was promoted to deputy chief. Hilary Davis was promoted from sergeant to commander.

Micah Neusse was promoted from detective to detective sergeant and David Taylor was promoted from patrol officer to sergeant.

Romeoville, landlord at odds over crime-free housing code

fsarver@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville village and a landlord are in a legal dispute over code violations pertaining to a new crime-free housing ordinance.

The ordinance, designed to reduce crime in residential rental units, went into effect Jan. 1 and has drawn the ire of Vernon Coop, a landlord with two rental properties in the village.

Romeoville Police Sgt. Chris Burne, who’s part of the village’s crime-free housing program, said Coop and another landlord are the only two among more than 1,000 who’ve refused to come into compliance.

In March, Coop was cited for eight violations for properties at 419 Belmont Drive and 507 Glen Ave. under the village’s crime-free housing ordinance. He has contested them in court since.

Coop said his issue with the new code is that it requires a written lease agreement with tenants, which he was unwilling to do because he had been trying to evict tenants at the Belmont Drive property and had a verbal agreement for rent payment with tenants at the Glen Avenue property.

The village has cited Coop for ordinance violations over his rental properties in 2015 and 2012.

Coop said he’s since obtained a rental license for properties that are now empty and he’s trying to sell and that a representative of his attended the mandatory crime-free housing seminar.

But he claims he’s facing a fine of up to $10,000 – although it could potentially be more – and the village is holding up the sale of his two properties.

“It’s just ridiculous. They’re playing hardball with us. They want 100 percent compliance with everyone in their city,” Coop said.

Burnes said the village has been trying to ensure Coop was in compliance with the new code since August, calling him and sending him letters repeatedly.

The ordinance was adopted by the village board March 2016.

Instead of complying, Burnes said Coop told the village to take him to court. Coop said out of frustration with the crime-free housing ordinance, he told the village to sue him.

Will County group talks mental health solutions amid gap in service

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A group of health care, nonprofit and law enforcement leaders met Tuesday morning in Plainfield to discuss the current state of behavioral health in Will County.

The breakfast event, titled “On the Table, Your Voice Matters,” was hosted by the Will County Mobilizing for Action in Planning and Partnerships Action Team at the Edwards Outpatient Center on West 127th Street. The team meets monthly, but each year at this time leaders dig deeper into behavioral health to advance the mission of the Kennedy Forum.

The forum was created by former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy after he left office in 2011, in an effort to place behavioral health on the same level as other health areas.

Among those attending from the law enforcement field was Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello, who proposed having one central hub for nonprofessional mental health workers in the county. The hub could be used by police departments seeking training and advice on how to deal with behavioral health issues.

“It’s time law enforcement thinks outside the box if we’re going to address not only the drug problem but the mental health problem in this country,” Ficarello said, adding he’d like to be able to send officers somewhere nearby for trainings by mental health professionals on how to handle behavioral health situations out in the field.

Ficarello noted encounters with individuals experiences severe mental health problems can be violent or deadly, and trainings for law enforcement can help supplement the mental health industry. He said law enforcement isn’t trained to deal with these individuals to near the extent that a mental health professional is.

The county is lacking in mental health services. That’s why Silver Cross Hospital is trying to get approval for a 100-bed mental health facility on its New Lenox campus.

Will County Health Department Adult Mental Health Program Manager Dr. Scott DuBois said Will County has one mental health professional for every 1,000 people, while the national average is one for every 375 people.

Discussions such as these are aimed at finding ways to fill the gap.

GEDC hosts Legislative Breakfast in Minooka

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Grundy Economic Development Council legislative breakfast once was again filled with area community leaders on hand to hear from local legislators on topics ranging from the budget to health care Monday morning in Minooka.

The annual dinner, hosted U.S Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon; state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; state Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst R-Kankakee; and state Rep. David Welter, R-Morris. Toi Hutchinson, D-Chicago Heights was the only legislator slated to attend who was unable to make it.

“It’s an interesting time to be in politics,” Nancy Norton, CEO of GEDC, said before turning over the microphone to the legislators to talk about some of the topics most closely related to Grundy County and the rest of Illinois.

Rezin spent a good portion of her time discussing the state budget that remains at an impasse.

“We haven’t had a full budget in two years,” she said. “It’s simple. We are spending higher than we are taking in.”

She went on to explain that the state

Welter, who replaced John Anthony, R-Minooka, before being elected, said that coming from county government gives him an insight on how not having a budget impacts those on a lo-

cal level and that it is imperative for the state to have a budget.

Kinzinger discussed the changes in health care and said he wanted to clear up that it does not remove pre-existing illnesses but instead makes them more affordable.

Rezin discussed the importance of the school funding formula and looking for solutions that do not create winners and losers, but rather improve education across the state.

Welter said that, on some things, both sides had to be willing to compromise for the people of not just the district but also the state.

The “Grand Bargain” was brought up by all of the state legislators.

It is an effort to resolve the budget impasse in Springfield. The Illinois Senate leadership, John Cullerton and Christine Radogno, have jointly proposed a series of bills to increase revenue, reduce spending and respond to the Illinois governor’s concerns regarding pension reforms, workers compensation reform and property tax relief.

The “Grand Bargain” refers to a series of bills to make this happen.

Norton moderated the event, asking questions that were sent in from those in attendance to each of the leaders.

Welter said it was different sitting on the panel versus attending, as he has done the past seven years, and he felt good questions and quality, honest answers were given from each of the legislators.

Workers report more Central Grocers layoffs

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More Central Grocers workers were laid off Tuesday at the Joliet warehouse, employees said.

Central Grocers has announced its intention to lay off all 549 remaining employees in Joliet, but a WARN notice issued to workers last week said the job cuts were expected to start June 26 as the company wound down its operations.

One worker, who said he was under instructions from his union representative not to be quoted by name, said he learned he was losing his job from supervisors who told him, “We just got the word we’ve got to lay you off.”

“I was expecting no layoffs until between June 26 and July 10,” he said.

“That’s what the notice said. That’s what we were going by.”

Erickson said the nurses’ proposal is 23 percent over three years. He said nurses at Presence Saint Joseph, on average, are paid above median market rates now. He said incidents of new nurses being paid more than others are isolated and that the hospital has “offered to resolve this issue in a fair way for those nurses.”

Burnes said the village’s prosecutor made an offer for a lower amount for Coop.

Burnes said the crime-free housing ordinance was needed for Romeoville because it has absentee landlords and slumlords. The ordinance forces landlords to have a vested interest in the community, he said.

“We added the indoor track because we heard indoor walking was important,” Carstens said.

The track surface will be softer than what is used on the gym floors, making it suitable for walking or jogging, he said. But the entire field house surface will be made of a rubberized material, which will make the field house adaptable to other uses.

“We’ll be able to not only run sports on it. We’ll be able to have special events, which is important,” Carstens said.

The project has a construction schedule of 10 to 12 months, so the recreation center conceivably could open even before August 2018. Carstens was not promising that, but he said the November 2018 grand opening date is conservative.

“I really think we’ll have a grand opening in September [2018],” he said.

Virginia L. Hunter (nee Milligan), 73, of Plainfield, passed away Friday, May 5, 2017, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet.

Virginia was born in Chicago to the late William and Frances (nee Marr) Milligan.

Loving mother of David (Samantha) Soraghan, Eric Soraghan, and Matthew (Lorie) Soraghan; cherished grandmother of Matthew, Carly, Shea, Danny, Nicholas, Ryan, Kevin, and Sidney Soraghan; dear sister of Jackie Fournier, the late Patricia, the late Helen, and the late Carol.

Virginia was a special education teacher and a registered nurse and was always reading and learning.

Frank Parks Jr. “Toop” was born on April 22, 1920, to Frank D. Parks and Florence Ericson Parks at St Joseph’s Hospital in Joliet, IL. He attended Farragut Grade School, graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1938, and attended Joliet Junior College during 1938-39. On August 23, 1941, he married Margaret Duffy and they celebrated 71 years of marriage. Frank passed

away peacefully on May 9, 2017, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge (2013); and his parents; older brother, Dick Parks (Dorothy); and his son-in-law, Robert Baitinger (Carolyn).

Frank is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Baitinger and Phyllis MacDonald; and sonin-law, Neal MacDonald. Also surviving are his three grandchildren, Maureen (Brad) MacDonald- Stein, Brian (Trish) MacDonald and Barbara Baitinger Lantz; and his four great-grandchildren, Emily Lantz, Austin and Tyler Stein, and Sydney and Colin MacDonald.

Frank enlisted into the Navy in August of 1943 and served with the Seabees in Guam until January 1946. After the war he worked for the Public Service in Joliet, built a home on River Road in Plainfield, served as commander of the Plainfield American Legion Marine Post 13, and became a member of the Masonic Lodge #536 in Plainfield. Frank and his brother opened Parks Bros. Supermarket in Plainfield in 1958 and a second store in Sandwich, IL in 1960. Frank was also board chairman of the Plainfield National Bank for 12 years. He retired from the grocery business in 1983. Frank was an avid outdoor sportsman of hunting and fishing. In late 1979 he built a cottage on Lake of Egypt near Marion, IL that he frequented after his retirement. Upon his death Frank had been a member of the Plainfield Congregational Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a 70-year member of the American Legion.

Child webcam sex bust reveals rising abuse

MABALACAT, Philippines – The suspected pedophile could see people banging on his front door through his security cameras. Were they neighbors? Cops?

One had letters on her jacket. As David Timothy Deakin googled “What is NBI?” from the laptop on his bed, the Philippines National Bureau of Investigation smashed their way into his cybersex den.

Children’s underwear, toddler shoes, cameras, bondage cuffs, fetish ropes, meth pipes and stacks of hard drives and photo albums cluttered the stuffy, two-bedroom townhouse.

Penciled on the wall, someone had scrawled “My Mom and Dad love me” and a broken heart. In his computer were videos and images of young boys and girls engaged in sex acts.

“Why is everyone asking about children coming into my house?” said Deakin, 53, his wrists bound with a zip tie.

The Civic Federation urges budget with funds, borrowing

CHICAGO – A Chicago tax policy and research group is urging Illinois lawmakers to pass a full budget instead of “piecemeal” solutions in the final weeks of the legislative session.

The Civic Federation said Tuesday that to close an estimated $4.6 billion deficit Illinois needs spending restraints, increased revenues and borrowing for unpaid bills.

Illinois fraternities aim to prevent sexual assault

URBANA – New bylaws from the University of Illinois fraternities’ governing board will require all chapters to train their members on how to intervene to prevent sexual assault.

The change from the university’s student-run Interfraternity Council requires all 42 campus fraternities to teach every second-year member about “bystander intervention.”

That’s in addition to the two sexual-assault-prevention programs already mandated for all students on campus, The News-Gazette reported.

The council suggests that chapters use the “ICARE” program offered by the university. Some fraternities and other groups already use the program voluntarily.

Fraternities also will be able to use programs designed by their national organizations.

The council’s president, David Kessler, said education alone won’t eliminate the problem. But he said it’ll better equip

fraternity members to intervene when they see people in compromising situations.

“With an increase in the amount of reported sexual violence every year on this campus and a significant percentage of those incidents occurring in our chapter houses, we consider it our responsibility as a council to do everything in our part to make our community a part of the solution and not part of the problem,” said Ben Samborn, the council’s vice president of risk management.

Jury awards $6.6M to woman hurt in O’Hare train crash

CHICAGO – A jury has awarded more than $6 million to a woman seriously injured when a Chicago Transit Authority train derailed at O’Hare International Airport.

Yolanda Montes was hurt when the Blue Line train crashed through a barrier at the airport station and landed on an escalator leading to the terminal. Montes’ attorney, Christopher Norem, said a jury on Friday awarded his client $6.6 million in a case stemming from the March 24, 2014, crash.

The early-morning crash injured dozens and caused millions of dollars in damage. It led the CTA to make operational changes,

including lowering the speed of trains approaching the airport. Norem said another train passenger received a $4.1 million verdict last month.

The CTA declined to comment Tuesday morning on the jury award.

Illinois officials unveil plan to reintroduce alligator gar

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois officials have released detailed plans for how they’ll reintroduce a giant fish that was thought to be extinct from the state’s waters.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced Monday that it’s published a management plan for alligator gar, which includes goals and objectives.

Last fall, Illinois officials stocked about 1,600 alligator gar. Biologists are restocking the fish in several states and some hope that it might be a weapon against Asian carp, an invasive species.

The fish is the second largest freshwater fish in North America, after the white sturgeon.

Illinois officials said in a news release that the last known catch before the reintroduction effort was in 1966 in southern Illinois’ Cache River basin. It was about 130 pounds and 7 feet long.

Trump fires FBI’s Comey in midst of Russia probe

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey Tuesday, dramatically ousting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the midst of an FBI investigation into whether Trump’s campaign had ties to Russia’s meddling in the election that sent him to the White House.

In a letter to Comey, Trump said the firing was necessary to restore “public trust and confidence” in the FBI. Comey has come under intense scrutiny in recent months for his public comments on an investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s email practices, including a pair of letters he sent to Congress on the matter in the closing days of last year’s campaign.

Trump made no mention of Comey’s role in the Clinton investigation, which she has blamed in part for the election result. But in announcing the firing, the White House circulated a scathing memo, written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, criticizing Comey’s handling of the Clinton probe, including the director’s decision to hold a news conference announcing its findings and releasing “derogatory information” about Clinton.

Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the bureau’s Trump-Russia probe, Rosenstein, his deputy, has been in charge.

This is only the second firing of an FBI director in history. President Bill Clinton dismissed William Sessions amid allegations of ethical lapses in 1993.

Democrats slammed Trump’s action, comparing it to President Richard Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” decision to fire the independent special prosecutor overseeing the Watergate investigation in 1973, which prompted the resignations of the Justice Department’s top two officials.

Trump has ridiculed the investigations as a “hoax” and has denied that his campaign was involved in Russia’s meddling. In his letter to Comey, he asserted that the FBI director had informed him “on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation.”

Tuesday’s stunning announcement came shortly after the FBI corrected aspects of Comey’s sworn testimony on Capitol Hill last week.

Comey told lawmakers that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton, had sent “hundreds and thousands” of emails to her husband’s laptop, including some with classified information.

On Tuesday, the FBI told the Senate Judiciary Committee that only “a small number” of the thousands of emails found on the laptop had been forwarded there while most had simply been backed up from electronic devices.

Most of the email chains on the laptop containing classified information were not the result of forwarding, the FBI said.

Crowd sourcing can show health costs GUEST VIEW Trudy Lieberman In a recent column, I reported on an effort in Ohio to bring price transparency to medical services. Ohio state representative Jim Butler had spearheaded passage of legislation that would require health care providers including doctors and hospitals to disclose prices for their services.

The law was supposed to take effect last summer, but Gov. John Kasich, the Ohio Hospital Association, and other health groups that oppose transparency have stymied implementation. The governor’s budget for next year calls for repealing the law.

Ohio’s law may disappear, but the demand for information is not going away. Many readers are downright angry after trying hard – and unsuccessfully – to get information to make good medical decisions.

James Friesen, a lending officer at a bank in Kearney, Nebraska, told me when he wanted to pay cash for a cardiac test his insurer wouldn’t pay for, he couldn’t find out the negotiated price his insurer had agreed to pay the hospital. Neither his insurer nor the hospital would say. “The doctor who ordered the test didn’t even know,” he said. “They intentionally keep patient consumers in the dark about pricing.”

When Naomi Johnson, a South Dakota retiree, tried to find out the price of a colonoscopy, she asked her insurer for the billing code the medical business uses to identify various procedures. Johnson used that code when she called the health facility where the procedure would be performed and asked for the cost of a simple colonoscopy barring complications.

The facility told her they couldn’t even give her a ballpark number until after the procedure because there would be several codes for many different things. “They acted like I was insane for asking.”

A California woman, Saskia Mills, told me getting an estimate for a simple outpatient procedure her family was paying for out of pocket was like “pulling teeth.” After more than 10 phone calls, they thought they knew they would have to pay $4,750 for the surgery and facility charges. The bill turned out to be $10,456, including $1,400 in pharmacy charges that were never mentioned beforehand.

Is this the patient-centered care health care executives claim they are providing?

Hardly. In reality it’s part of a process cooked up by doctors, hospitals and insurers that keeps patients from learning how much they must pay and for what. It’s responsible for those undecipherable bills we all get.

to find out what their medical care charges will be stems from a gigantic bill coding business that involves the health system’s biggest players in a game of one-upsmanship to make big profits. The codes determine what providers are paid. The more individual codes included in the bill and the higher levels of service a code specifies, the more money providers make.

There are tens of thousands of codes that have become increasingly specific, Rosenthal says. For example, there are different codes for earwax removal depending on the method used to remove the wax.

Furthermore, prices negotiated between insurers and hospitals are secret. A study commissioned by the New York State Health Foundation late last year found that contracts insurers negotiate with hospitals often say they can’t disclose the prices they’ve negotiated, such as listing those prices on their website. If they do, hospitals can terminate their contracts and refuse to accept the insurer’s patients.

No wonder patients are fighting back.

I checked in with Jeanne Pinder, who heads an organization called ClearHealthCosts, https://clearhealthcosts.com/ Its mission is to tell patients what their medical care costs.

The organization now partners with media organizations in Miami, Tampa-St. Petersburg, and New Orleans and with MedPage Today. It has also worked with news outlets in California and Philadelphia to publish prices of 35 procedures that consumers can actually shop for, such as MRIs and mammograms.

ClearHealthCosts has just launched its latest site in New Orleans, and Pinder said, “Traffic is through the roof. People are sending us bills and calling us with horror stories.”

ClearHealthCosts uses crowd sourcing to build a community-created guide to health costs. Patients from all parts of the country send in their explanations of benefits, dates of their procedures, names of providers and insurers, and amounts they paid, which are posted on the news outlet websites. They show wide variation in the price for the same service in a given area.

In San Francisco, for example, they found that an MRI of the lower back without contrast could cost as little as $475 or as much as $6,221 depending on where it was done. Most patients would want to know that, but as the Ohio experience has shown, health care businesses and governments sometimes work together to keep prices under wraps.

“So many people have lost faith and hope that government regulators or industry will fix this problem,” Pinder said. “We are supplying the fix, and the fix is transparency.”

To the Editor: While infant Sema’j has been buried, a Will County judge is looking for answers. At the same time, elected officials are hoping to escape blame for what should be considered a “crime against humanity.”

Has any newspaper contacted Mike Madigan for comment as he is the de facto chief executive of Illinois, with a hand in approving or vetoing every elected and appointed official in the State of Illinois? If there should be blood on someone’s hands, let’s get it right this time.

If the Illinois DCFS is the government, and the government is all the people, then we the people let down Sema’j Crosby and her three traumatized surviving siblings. Surely, DCSF dropped the ball as to what is and what is not the minimum living standard for four children to enjoy “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in an America of, by and for the people.

We all need for Will County Judge Paula Gomora to dig and dig – and dig some more – to come up with the answers. And, please, all those in the professional faith business, stay away.

You will only stain the process further. We all want justice for little Sema’j, except perhaps those who saw the evidence go up in smoke with the house she

died in. When, where and how has America gone so far astray?

Can’t take President Trump’s word

To the Editor: History cites the power and honor of the president of the United States when the president of France was asked if he would like to see the photographic evidence of Russian missiles in Cuba. He said “No, the president’s word is sufficient.”

Can you image anybody taking President Trump’s word for anything? The only bipartisan agreement in the House and Senate is the occupants of the White House are undependable and untrustworthy.

The entire administration seems to be composed of multimillionaires and billionaires with no board experience in running the second-biggest corporation (China is the biggest). Diplomacy with a level head keeps us out of war with another country and gets us help from dependable allies.

President Kennedy’s level-headed diplomacy prevented World War III. If a similar situation happened today, you could kiss your butt goodbye.

Minooka holds off Plainfield South in ‘most physical game’ of the season

dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Minooka girls soccer team already had ended Plainfield North’s long Southwest Prairie Conference winning streak.

The Indians already had clinched a co-championship in the SPC. But there was unfinished business.

On Tuesday’s Senior Night, the Indians had to beat rival Plainfield South to win the title outright.

When the Cougars are the opponent, you can count on it being a spirited, physical battle.

That it was, and it the department that mattered most, Minooka scored twice late in the first half and repelled South’s comeback attempt to secure an emotional 2-1 victory.

“It was an interesting game,” Minooka coach Chris Brolley said with a smile. “It was very physical, probably the most physical game we have had all year. Both teams were playing hard. It was a playoff atmosphere.”

“When we play Plainfield South, it’s always an intense, physical game,” said forward Hailey Arlis, one of two seniors on the roster for the Indians (15-4, 9-0). The other, midfielder Martina Kotrba, was recognized before the game although she has been unable to play since being injured in the season opener.

“It was rough to go through the season without Martina,” Arlis said.

“She had surgery, and the team really stepped up for her. Absolutely.”

“The injuries keep coming,” South coach Alfonso Lopez said. “Our girls played hard, but it just didn’t pan out.

Minooka is a good team, a great team, and we knew we had to be at our best to beat them.”

Minooka broke the scoreless tie when midfielder Sam Alessio kicked

a long pass from the right side, finding streaking sophomore midfielder Kaleigh Murphy. She put it past South keeper Jami Maloney with 8:26 left in the half.

“That was a great look,” Brolley said. “Murph was able to pick off the pass and put it in. She was ready to run tonight. You could see how psyched she was before the game.”

Lockport wins as seniors play final home match

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Boys volleyball definitely creates a fun atmosphere and few area teams demonstrate that quite like Lockport does.

While coach Nick Mraz’s Porters definitely have a business-like approach, they also like to enjoy themselves, as was seen with them going with a Hawaiian-look after Tuesday’s match against Lincoln-Way West, which also was the home finale for eight seniors.

Lockport rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the opener and then broke open a 13-13 tie in the finale as it captured a 25-22, 25-16 SouthWest Suburban Conference win in a clash of two of the topfour seeds in their sub-sectional of the Edwardsville Sectional.

On a night where seniors Kris Aleknavicius, Tim Behland, Matt Dalton, Justin Elliott, Dan Provenzano, Colin Schlink, Noah Speechley and Felipe Valladares were honored, the second-seeded Porters (24-4, 3-3) outperformed the fourth-seeded Warriors (18-9, 1-4) down the stretch in each set.

Not four minutes later, at the 4:32 mark, Minooka junior midfielder Kennedy Messina was awarded a free kick. She put the long kick in front of the net, and sophomore forward Brooke Brodzinski headed it in before going down in pain. Teammates helped her off the field, and she would return.

“I’m still not sure who got the goal – maybe it was Brooke,” Brolley said. “Kennedy put the ball right in there.”

“Brooke is a sophomore and she has been working hard for this team,” Messina said. “We’ve actually done that multiple times, with our forward making a play on the other end of the ball.”

Yet as Arlis noted, a 2-0 lead at halftime can be a double-edged sword.

“It’s nice to be leading, but 2-0 can be one of the roughest leads to have,” she said. “One goal, they’re right back in the game and the momentum can completely shift.

Going into the second half, we knew we couldn’t get down, we had to keep playing aggressively.

Indeed, South, which had few good scoring chances against Minooka’s superb defense, chopped its deficit in half when senior midfielder Miranda Nirchi scored on a long shot that caromed off the crossbar and into the net behind Minooka sophomore goalkeeper Bella Alessio. It was Nirchi’s 15th goal.

“I was off my line a little of the goal,” Alessio explained. “But that was a nice ball on No. 14’s part.”

Minooka has blanked nine opponents and never has allowed more than three goals. Nirchi’s goal was the fourth the Indians have yielded in conference play.

“A big part of it is our defense and center mids always working back and helping me,” Alessio said.

“Defense is a key for us,” Brolley said. “We defend really well.”

And the Indians enjoy doing it.

“This is a fun group to watch and a great group of girls,” Brolley said.

With their outright SPC title having been secured, the Indians anticipate the postseason. Ditto for the Cougars.

“It’s starts over,” Lopez said.

“We look forward to a clean slate.”

“The seniors have been together since we were freshmen and having the younger kids come in has been a seamless transition, so I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Schlink said.

“We all know when we’re allowed to have fun and it’s a great atmosphere at practices and games. We’re like one big family. We go out on the weekends and hang out at each other’s houses.

We know what we bring to games and as long as we do that, I have no doubt we can win.”

Lockport owned a few three-point leads in the finale before West pulled even at 13-13 following kills by Ben Pluskota (six kills) and Justin Rellinger.

But after Dalton got a kill to give the hosts the lead for good, Pfeiffer served up four-straight points as Kyle Dixon and Dalton shared a block and Elliott added a kill to make the score 18-13.

The Porters, who also got nine assists and six digs from Provenzano, scored the final four points as Patrick Surane had a kill, Speechley added a block and Pfeiffer got a kill. Lockport is favored in the Plainfield Central Regional, but will have to get past tough squads such as third-seed Lin-

coln-Way Central as well as Plainfield South, Andrew and Minooka.

“Obviously it’s been a great season and our record shows that,” Aleknavicius said. “It’s been one for the books.

This is a really close group and we even have themed practices every Friday. The main key to our success is that we’re all so close and we work as a team. No one has any bad feelings toward each other so everyone just works toward the same goal.”

West also got 11 assists from David Flores and three kills from Nathan Bulow. Coach Jodi Frigo hopes that her team can put it all together down the stretch so that they’ll be able to challenge top seed Lincoln-Way East for the Joliet West Regional title.

“Lockport is a great team and they definitely picked up those points at the end, which are huge,” Frigo said.

“We’re just trying to get into that system to get ready for playoff time and make a few less errors than we did today.

“If we look at what we’re going to be up against, it will about who’s on.

And if we can get a core group of us all at the same time, it’s going to make a difference.”

VOLLEYBALL: MINOOKA

Minooka’s Alli Papesh receiving MaxPreps award SUBMITTED REPORT MINOOKA – Minooka volleyball standout Alli Papesh will be presented with the MaxPreps Athlete of the Month Award for March, presented by the U.S. Marine Corps.

The presentation will be made at 11:50 a.m. Thursday during a lunch assembly at the school.

Minooka athletic director Bob Tyrell and girls volleyball coach Carrie Prosek will introduce Papesh. Ryan Jay Owens, a member of the U.S. National Volleyball Team, will be the special guest presenter.

Sgt. Devon Tindle will be the Marine representative on hand.

MaxPreps and the Marine Corps team up to honor some of America’s most deserving student-athletes with the High School Athlete

of the Month Award, and Papesh now adds her name to the list of winners.

The news release on the event states that the title is given to any athletes that any American community would be proud to call its own.

The program honors athletes who display ideals that the Marines stand for, such as bravery, dedication perseverance, personal sacrifice for others and being a positive influence in one’s community. It’s not about stats, it’s about the bigger picture, or a single moment that puts ideals ahead of the game.

The release concludes, “Allison Papesh has been the most deserving student-athlete for the month of March at Minooka Community High School.”

BLOOMINGTON – With plenty of recent close softball games involving teams in the upcoming Class 4A Minooka Sectional, it was anyone’s guess as to who would emerge as the top-seeded teams in the field.

But on Tuesday, the Illinois High School Association ended the drama when it announced seeds for the upcoming baseball and softball sectionals in Class 3A and 4A, and things look to be up for grabs in the 18-team tournament at Minooka’s central campus.

Lincoln-Way East beat out Lockport for the sectional’s top seed, while Lincoln-Way Central was third and Joliet West took fourth. Plainfield Central, Lincoln-Way West, Andrew and Romeoville rounded out the top eight, while Minooka was ninth, Plainfield South 11th and Joliet Central was 17th. Regionals will be hosted by Andrew, Lincoln-Way Central, Plainfield Central and TF South.

The rest of the area’s Class 4A softball teams are in the Bolingbrook Sectional. Geneva drew the No. 1 seed, followed by Plainfield North, Plainfield East and West Aurora. Bolingbrook was seeded 15th in its own sectional.

Schools that will be hosting regionals are Downers Grove North, Neuqua Valley, West Aurora and Yorkville.

Seven teams will be competing in the Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional. The top-seeded squad is Andrew, followed

by Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way West, Sandburg, Lockport, Richards, Providence Catholic and Lincoln-Way East to round out the top eight teams.

Joliet Central is 15th and Joliet West is 18th in the 21-team sectional. Regionals will be held at Andrew, Lincoln-Way East, Shepard and TF North.

In the 21-team Oswego Sectional, Neuqua Valley and Oswego East are the top two seeds with Plainfield North, Plainfield South, Plainfield Central, Naperville Central, Yorkville and Downers Grove South rounding out the top eight. Minooka is ninth, Plainfield East is 12th, Bolingbrook is 14th and Romeoville is 19th. Regional sites are Neuqua Valley, Oswego East, Plainfield South and Hinsdale South.

DeKalb gets first NIB 12 win against Morris

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After two straight games in which they came from behind in the seventh inning to win, the Morris baseball team did not have the magic the third time Tuesday and suffered a 4-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East defeat to DeKalb.

The facts that Morris (13-13, 3-8) had just five hits and made three errors that led to three of DeKalb’s four runs being unearned were ones that coach Todd Kein could point to as reasons for the loss. One thing he couldn’t fault, though, was the pitching performance of Dawson Moore.

Moore came on in relief in the first inning after starter Andrew Wojcik struggled to find the strike zone. Wojcik, a senior starting on the mound on Senior Day, retired DeKalb’s leadoff hitter, Noah Vallin, then walked Der-

ek Kyler and James Belli and winning pitcher Bryce Wheeler reached on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch on Wojcik’s first pitch to Matt Searls sent Kyler home with the game’s first run and brought Kein out of the dugout to replace Wojik with Moore.

Moore proceeded to strike out Searls and then Tyler Hoffman to end the threat and keep the score at 1-0. Moore pitched six innings before leaving with one out in the seventh. He allowed just five hits and three runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out five.

“Dawson did a good job,” Kein said.

“I certainly can’t fault him tonight. He did what we asked him to do. He threw strikes and kept them hitting the ball on the ground. What we as a team didn’t do was make the plays at this time of the year that we should be making.

“We are just not good enough to be giving away runs. I don’t care if the

DeKalb, which entered the game with an 0-10 record in the NIB 12 and had lost its previous 16 games, added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth,

although the Barbs (7-20, 1-10) didn’t get their first hit until Maxwell Lang’s RBI single in the fourth.

Morris tallied its lone run in the bottom of the third. Payton Voitik singled to right with two outs, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single

The rest of the night, Wheeler kept Morris hitters off balance by mixing up his fastball and curve effectively, throwing strikes with both. He allowed only five hits and struck out six.

“We took too many strikes and swung at too many pitches out of the zone,” Kein said. “Our approach at the plate was not very good. We have gotten to the point of the season where we can’t have things like that plague us like they do. I have a very difficult time believing that this team, with the talent it has, is the team it showed tonight. We have had flashes of being very good, but the consistency of that needs to improve.”

In a 1-0 win over Purdue Northwest, John Riordan tossed a one-hitter and struck out seven, while Anthony Faron drove in Kyle Burton for the only run.

JOLIET SLAMMERS

SUBMITTED REPORT JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers, who open their Frontier League season Friday as part of a threegame weekend series at Lake Erie, will have their home opener Tuesday night against the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Tickets on opening day at Slammers Stadium in downtown Joliet are $2 as part of the Slammers’ $2 Tuesday promotion.

Eleven home games are scheduled in May. Promotions include three education days on May 17, 18 and 24. All education-day games begin at 10:05 a.m.

The first fireworks night of the season is scheduled May 19 on Superhero Night. Superheroes, provided

by Magic, Music and More, include Spider-Man, Captain America, Wonder Woman and Mrs. Incredible. Superheroes will be at the stadium for autographs and pictures. Fans are

encouraged to dress up for the evening and any fans that participate will receive a free small drink voucher. A postgame fireworks show will follow.

Bike Night will be held May 25. A parade around the field with motorcycles from the Christian Motorcycle Association will occur pregame.

BALTIMORE – Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming made himself right at home Tuesday in Stall 40 at Pimlico Race Course, munching on hay while his handlers scurried around him.

The bay colt was in excellent spirits after traveling from Churchill Downs to Pimlico, where he will spend the next 11 days before running in the Preakness.

Always Dreaming was pampered by assistant trainer Ginny DePasquale, who will be joined by her boss, trainer Todd Pletcher, on Wednesday.

“I just spoke to Todd and told him: ‘The horse looks very bright-eyed. He looks very happy,’” DePasquale said.

“It’s pretty special to see him looking that well. I’m happy and I know Todd is.”

Stall 40 is traditionally reserved for the Kentucky Derby winner and has housed many of the greatest champions in horse racing history. Secretariat and Seattle Slew are among several Triple Crown winners who resided there, but Always Dreaming is the first Derby winner to cozy into Stall 40 since California Chrome in 2014.

“It’s actually very exciting because we think he’s a really, really special horse,” DePasquale said.

The 13/16-mile Preakness will be run May 20. The notion behind bringing Always Dreaming to Pimlico well in advance of the race was twofold: to avoid excessive travel and to let the horse get familiar with his surroundings.

Instead of transporting the New York-based Always Dreaming from Kentucky to Belmont and back to Baltimore, Pletcher figured it was best just to eliminate the trip to New York.

“All that traveling, it doesn’t really take anything out of him, but you never really know,” DePasquale said. “It’s

The plan is for Always Dreaming to jog around the track Wednesday and “probably gallop” on Thursday, DePasquale said.

Sometime next week, things will begin to get hectic at Pimlico. Until then, Always Dreaming will have the place pretty much to himself.

“Yeah, I think that’s the important part – just let him look around without

all the excitement,” DePasquale said.

“That way, he can take everything in.

And then slowly but surely, all the excitement starts.”

Notes: Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will ride Gunnevera in the Preakness, replacing Javier Castellano, who has chosen another horse for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Castellano finished seventh aboard Gunnevera in the Kentucky Derby last weekend. Smith rode Girvin to a 13thplace finish.

For the Preakness on May 20, Castellano will be aboard Cloud Computing, trained by Chad Brown. Castellano rides a number of horses for the New York-based trainer.

Alex Sano, who assists his trainer-father Antonio Sano with Gunnevera, says they understand Castellano’s loyalty to Brown. They’re happy to have Smith commit to Gunnevera, a horse he’s never ridden. Gunnevera will ride a van from Louisville, Kentucky, to Baltimore on Saturday.

Arrieta not worried about ‘contract year’ after rough start

DENVER – Jake Arrieta isn’t the only Cubs starter to struggle in the first five weeks of the Cubs’ championship defense.

But another rough start Tuesday in Colorado has put him in places he has never experienced as a Cub – his 5.35 ERA after a 10-4 loss to the Rockies the highest it has been in any season since joining the club, after failing to finish the fourth inning to the Rockies for the first time since 2012.

The Cubs beat the Rockies, 8-1, in Game 2.

What’s the deal with Arrieta?

That was supposed to be the mega-million-dollar question by sometime in December.

But seven starts closer to his pending free agency it has been replaced by the more pressing question of what it might take to regain the form he showed in two World Series wins last fall – never mind his 2015 Cy Young Award season.

One thing Arrieta says is not an issue to question: “I’m not worried about the contract year,” he said after giving up nine hits and three walks in 32/3 innings in the first game of a rain-created doubleheader at Coors Field. “I’m worried about being healthy and taking the ball every fifth day. If I’m able to do that, the results, in the long run are going to play in my favor. I know that for sure.”

Arrieta, whose velocity has been down 2 to 3 mph most starts this year, was considered by some the top free agent starter in the upcoming free agency class as the season opened. It’s a class that also includes Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish and that could get a boost if the Giants’ Johnny Cueto and/or Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka opt out of their contracts.

Arrieta’s agent, Scott Boras, has compared Arrieta in recent years to Max Scherzer, a Cy Young winner with

the Tigers, who got a then-record, seven-year, $210 million deal with the Nationals before the 2015 season.

“Financially, things are going to work out anyway,” Arrieta added. “I don’t put a whole lot of time and effort and energy into my free agency. I’m here right now to try and win games for the team. I think guys respect that. I think teams respect that.

“And sometimes results, they stink.

And right now they stink, from my last three or four starts.”

This one was his shortest since July 5, 2012, almost exactly a year to the day before the Orioles traded him to the Cubs.

It also came just two starts after his 72-start streak of pitching at least five innings – which was the longest active such streak in the majors – ended with a 41/3-inning start in Boston.

“I’m going through a period right now where it’s been tough,” said Arrieta, who added that he needs to get more aggressive with more of his pitches than he leaned on Tuesday. “And I’ve had many of these before in the past, and I know how to deal with it. I just look forward to getting back to work tomorrow and in the next couple days, trying to refine some stuff, and it’ll be better.

“That’s all I care about, just trying to improve in some form or fashion every day.”

Manager Joe Maddon pointed to a lack of swings and misses that he’s used to seeing from Arrieta and said it could be as simple as the dip in velocity in the early going that was evident again Tuesday. But neither he nor Arrieta seemed concerned about that. Both say he’s healthy, and that’s the big factor in optimism for a turnaround once they’re closer to sea level.

A one-out throwing error by shortstop Javy Baez on Tuesday extended a six-run third inning Tuesday. But Arrieta made no excuses.

“I didn’t do my job,” Arrieta said.

“Pretty poor performance on my part.”

Rick Renteria received good grades for guiding the White Sox through a so-so first 30 games in which they won 15 and played a decent brand of baseball in the process.

Considering the low expectations for his team coming out of spring training, to bounce out of the gate with life and spunk playing .500 ball into May has been viewed as success.

“For the most part, they prepare well, they’ve been hustling and we’ve been getting some good relief pitching,’’ Renteria said before the Sox opened a six-game homestand Tuesday on a flat note with a 7-2 loss against the Twins.

Renteria oozes positive vibes, but it was evident after the Sox were swept in Baltimore – where he was ejected from Sunday’s loss – that even

he was disappointed.

“Probably the last couple of days we haven’t done as well defensively as we have during the course of the season,’’ Renteria said Monday.

The Sox were coming off a sloppy three-game weekend sweep to the Orioles in Baltimore, and since they built a tidy 13-9 record with a messy 6-4 win over the Tigers in 10 innings in Detroit on April 29, they are falling on rougher times.

And after enjoying an off day after a 10-game road trip, the Sox lost their fourth straight game and seventh in their past nine to the Twins before a chilled Dog Night crowd of 14,498 people and 463 pooches on the South Side.

All in all, general manager Rick Hahn is pleased with what he’s seen.

At least to this point.

“All of us are very pleased with the work Ricky and his staff have done thus far, both from a pregame prepa-

ration standpoint through the way the game is being played between the lines,’’ Hahn said before the game, “which has translated ultimately to perhaps a little better record than a lot of people outside that clubhouse predicted for this team.’’

The Sox led former Sox pitcher Hector Santiago, 2-0, on RBI singles

by Willy Garcia, getting his first start in center field, and second baseman Tyler Saladino.

But the Twins got to Sox righthander Mike Pelfrey for three runs in the fourth, and then Dan Jennings (three) and Chris Beck (one) for a fourspot in the seventh. In the seventh, both right fielder Avisail Garcia and Willy Garcia bobbled RBI base hits by Ehire Adrianza and Byron Buxton, allowing them to advance an extra base.

The Sox lineup, meanwhile, couldn’t capitalize on five walks by Santiago and with only three hits

against him, were held to two runs.

Win or lose, Hahn said he likes what he sees from the coaching staff as the organization tries to lay new groundwork for the future in the first year of a rebuilding plan.

“From the things we stated going all the way back to the organizational meetings through spring training we felt were important, creating the right environment, culture, focusing on the things that are important as an organization, Ricky and his staff have done a great job,” Hahn said.

“We’re really pleased with where the club sits.

“The one thing we want to make sure we accomplish this season is create that right environment, the kind of thing that’s going to endure year in and year out and serve us well once the talent level is at a threshold that reasonably projects a championship contention for the club.’’

How would you treat an ankle sprain?

Foot and ankle injuries happen to all of us from time to time. Although it is sometimes hard to tell how serious an injury is at first, here is an easy guide to use until you can reach a doctor.

R.I.C.E. stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. First, the body must be allowed to recuperate, and that calls for rest. Second, forget the heating pad, at least at first. Ice applied immediately after an injury and for several days following constricts blood vessels, reducing swelling and pain. Third, compression with a bandage also reduces swelling, as well as immobilizing the area. Finally, elevating the foot above the heart prevents blood from pooling around the injury. R.I.C.E. is first aid only, not a replacement.

Penalty Box has wide range of pizza, unique macs If you go

MYSTERY DINER PLAINFIELD – The Penalty Box Bar and Grill in Plainfield is a hockey bar, you can tell that much by its name.

So the Blackhawks’ quick ouster from the playoffs couldn’t have been good for business.

What is good for business, however, is drink and food specials.

My first visit to the Penalty Box was on a Sunday, so there weren’t a ton of specials, like with most restaurants on the weekend. The crowds come on their own.

One thing you’ll notice quickly about the menu is that it isn’t huge, a single two-sided laminated sheet.

There’s a ton of pizza options and there are a ton of varieties of mac and cheese.

So, as I’ve done before, I dug into a plate of food originally intended for 5-year-olds. Only these macs are a bit more grown up, running anywhere from $6.95 for the plain mac to $7.95 to $8.95 for anything from chicken chipotle to Sunday Morning Mac (with buttermilk biscuit) or the $13.95 Maine Mac with white cheddar, jack cheese and lobster.

I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak Mac and my friend ordered The Hat Trick burger ($8.95) with barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese and two strips of bacon.

This was after debating the Garlic Poor Boy ($9.99), which he was disappointed to find out included steak. He’s not from around here and was hoping for a po’ boy with fish or shrimp.

For starters, we had jalapeño poppers and fried pickles.

They didn’t have a beer list right away, the bartender found one later, and we were able to find a craft beer to our liking.

Mine was Bell’s Hopslam ($4.75), a double IPA from Michigan that I’ve been wanting to try. It’s strong at 10 percent, and as its website states includes a blend of “grapefruit, stone fruit and floral notes” with malt and note of honey.

It was outstanding and so was the Philly Cheese Mac, which had a generous amount of cheesesteak spilling out of the overflowing skillet topped with melted cheese goodness.

The burger was pretty much just a burger. He likes his burgers closer to alive than fully cooked and I’ll leave it

at that.

Since the name of the bar many times includes “Center Ice Pizza” and it even offers frozen thin-crust pizzas ($13 to $20 for 14-inch variety), I figured it wouldn’t hurt to stop by and try one of those before writing it up, too.

So, on a Monday night, I took advantage of the $5 special for a 10-inch pizza (You Call It! May order up to four toppings). It’s $8.95 regular price.

I stopped in, ordered one loaded with meat (pepperoni, sausage, bacon and white-meat chicken) and watched the end of the Cubs and Sox games along with the Dodgers and NBA playoffs.

From any spot on the bar, you can see about 15 TVs, or at least it seems that way.

I sipped on a Founders Dirty Bastard ($4.75 Scotch Ale), another Michigan brew, this one a bit darker but just as unique and tasty, as I waited.

The pizza came out piping hot and, even though I tried to resist, I tackled my first slice a little too quickly. It burned a little. Which was just an excuse to order a pint of Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale ($4.75), a classic amber-colored IPA the company has made for years, to finish the pizza with.

As for the pizza, the sauce was outstanding and so were the toppings.

With that much meat, there’s bound to be grease (and there was), but I enjoyed it from first bite to last.

And yes, I ate it all in one sitting.

Maybe that was too much food, but I was hungry and didn’t have anyone there to judge me.

Comparing surgical procedures Dear Doctor: My cardiovascular surgeon tells me medicine has mostly abandoned shunt and stent placements as a solution to carotid artery plaques. Instead, doctors are returning to the older “Roto-Rooter” procedure because patient outcomes have proven less problematic. What’s your take on this?

Dear Reader: Let’s start with an anatomy lesson. The common carotid arteries are major suppliers of blood to the brain. You have two of them, and you can feel their pulse at the side of your neck, lateral to your Adam’s apple (thyroid cartilage). They split in the neck to become the external and internal carotid arteries, which supply blood to the majority of the brain.

Turbulent blood flow at the location of these splits contributes to the formation of plaque within the internal carotid arteries, as do other factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. This plaque can rupture and cause closure of the artery; or a portion of the plaque can break off and lodge in a smaller artery. In either circumstance, a stroke occurs – leading to a significant loss of neurologic function. Thus, if the internal carotid artery is significantly closed with plaque, it is necessary to clear the plaque.

What you describe as a Roto-Rooter procedure is called a carotid endarterectomy. A surgeon performs an endarterectomy via an incision in the neck. Taking care to maintain blood flow to that side of the brain, he or she clamps the internal carotid artery, makes an incision in the artery and locates the plaque.

The surgeon then frees the plaque from the lining of the artery and removes it before closing the blood vessel and placing a patch on the artery to prevent complications.

Obviously, the procedure is not without its risks. The death rate from endarterectomy varies between 0.5 and 3 percent. Also, the rate of having a stroke during the procedure ranges between 0.25 and 3 percent and

Carotid artery stenting is a different type of procedure in which the surgeon places a catheter into a major artery (usually the femoral artery in the groin), then moves it via wire up to the internal carotid artery.

The surgeon then dilates the artery (if necessary) and lodges the stent into its lining.

On the surface, stenting may sound less dangerous, but studies have not found this to be the case. A 2012 analysis of 16 studies found that, in the 30 days after the procedure, stenting had a higher rate of combined death and stroke (8.2 percent) compared to endarterectomy (5 percent). A separate study also linked stenting to more minor strokes.

But note the difference in death and major stroke was not seen among patients less than 70 years of age. And other studies have shown, over timeframes of 4.2 and 10 years, the rates of major strokes and death show less of a benefit with the carotid endarterectomy versus stenting.

Still, as of now, research suggests the carotid endarterectomy is clearly the better procedure, especially if you’re over the age of 70.

But note each patient is different. In difficult surgical situations, stenting remains a good alternative, and with newer carotid stenting techniques in development, the choices for individuals will continue to evolve.

DEAR ABBY My fiancée has a death wish. She Jeanne recently lost her Phillips youngest child to suicide. She’s in a lot of pain and rarely has a good day. She suffers from PTSD and relives the scene daily in her mind. She’s a hard worker, so that helps to keep her mind off things. She lives in an empty house with nothing there but farm animals, which she says do help to make her happy.

Abby, I’m worried because she does things that put her in danger, such as staying at her son’s grave alone at night for hours. She told me recently she’s planning to go out of state to visit her other son and then spend six days by herself camping and hiking. She also goes jogging alone late at night and leaves her doors unlocked.

It seems she just doesn’t care about what may happen. She says don’t worry, but I’m terrified one day something will happen.

We’re recently engaged and I care deeply about her and her safety, but I’m helpless to say anything because she just gets mad. I don’t know what to do. – Very Concerned Fiancé In Florida Dear Fiancé: Your fiancée is in the throes of grief. If she is the person who discovered her son’s body, she may be numb with shock and not thinking clearly.

It is not unusual for people who have lost a loved one – particularly a child – to wonder if life is still worth living and to engage either consciously or subconsciously in risk-taking behavior. A licensed psychotherapist or a suicide support group could help her to recognize what she’s doing and to get through this.

Seeing others who have experienced what she has and who are further along in the grieving process would be helpful.

If she’s resistant to the idea, offer to go with her. The American Federation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org) can help you find resources in your state.

Dear Abby: The husbands of both my two daughters asked for my blessing before asking my girls to marry them. I felt what they did was respectful, and it was very much appreciated. My wife felt the same way when I relayed the good news to her.

I believe this courtesy replaced what in the “olden days” was a request for permission from the father rather than a blessing and, in my opinion, is more appropriate. If I am correct in my assumption that “permission” has evolved to “blessing,” I wonder if it would have been more appropriate for them to have asked my wife and me together for our blessing. They could not marry without their father’s consent. Thankfully, those customs are long gone – in western society, at least.

When West shifted to the diamond 10, declarer won with dummy’s ace and played a spade to her queen.

West had a second opportunity to give East a heart ruff, but he persisted with the diamond eight. South ruffed, cashed the spade ace and gave up a trump. A moment later, when in hand with the club ace, declarer played a heart to dummy’s 10 and discarded a club loser on the heart queen. She took four spades, two hearts, one diamond and one club.

West was wrong. If East had started with three hearts, he would surely have shifted to a trump at trick two, not helped set up a winner for South.
