A bit of ingenious engineering is required to construct aqueducts to cross streams, creeks, and rivers along the Illinois and Michigan Canal route.

Along the 96-mile trek through the wilderness, the I&M Canal needed a series of 15 locks to navigate the 141-foot elevation change from Chicago to the Illinois River.

Aqueducts along the canal generally were composed of a trunk section, which carried the canal across an intersecting stream, supported by abutments at each end.

Canal engineers had to design and construct five aqueducts to carry the canal over other bodies of water, such as rivers and creeks. The five principal aqueducts, moving from east to west along the canal, built were over Aux Sable Creek, Nettle Creek, Fox River, Pecumsaugan Creek and Little Vermilion River.

A sixth aqueduct also was constructed across the Des Plaines River and served a feeder canal running between the Kankakee River and the main canal. Serving as a source of water for the canal, this is aqueduct is often referred to as the Kankakee Feeder.

In the early 19th century, both Aux Sable and Nettle Creeks were natural barriers to the construction of the I&M Canal.

Because both bodies of water were a natural watershed, the canal engineers had to construct aqueducts over the creeks. The Aux Sable and Nettle Creek aqueducts are two of five aqueducts built along the canal as a solution to transporting canal boats over other bodies of water.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal aqueducts were essentially identical in terms of their basic construction components, such as abutments, piers, trunk, and a towpath bridge, but varied considerably in respect to length.

Constructed in 1847, the first aqueduct at Aux Sable Creek was built as part of the original I&M Canal construction project.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

This wooden aqueduct was replaced in 1927-28 by a steel structure. In 1948, the abutments and piers were strengthened, and in 1970, the towpath bridge was rebuilt.

The aqueduct spans 136 feet across Aux Sable Creek and is 18 feet wide. The steel aqueduct was again stabilized as part of infrastructure improvements done along the canal in the late 1990s.

Morris is one of several towns in Grundy Country that borders on the I&M Canal.

The Nettle Creek Aqueduct is located along the part of the Illinois and Michigan Canal that was designated as “Section 126” during the construction phase of the canal.

Stone for constructing the aqueduct was quarried 7 miles west of Morris, near the river bank.

The original, red sandstone was inferior to other stone used along the canal and disintegrated over time.

In time this aqueduct was also rebuilt, and in 1910, the wooden aqueduct was removed and replaced with a steel structure.

Mokena man hopes his experience will inspire others who have TBI

aortiz@shawmedia.com MOKENA – As Brian Sweeney stood and watched his Mokena home be turned into a movie set to make his book, “Every 21 Seconds,” come to life, he had to admit something.

“It is kind of weird,” Sweeney said.

“It just seemed humbling in one effect, and kind of odd.”

It was not just because he and his wife, Mary Beth Sweeney, were being portrayed by professional actors, or that his family photos were replaced by photos of those actors. It was because he never thought his story of dealing with a traumatic brain injury would ever have had such an impact.

Brian wrote “Every 21 Seconds” to document his experience of TBI and recovery. The title refers to the statistic that every 21 seconds someone in the U.S. will experience a TBI. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1.7 million people suffer a TBI every year.

The story began 25 years ago, when Brian was on a trip with some friends at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He and his friends were at a bar, where a patron had too much to drink and was being particularly rowdy.

Brian doesn’t remember much beyond that.

That is because as he and his friends were leaving, Brian was mistaken by the man for someone else and attacked.

The man delivered multiple blows to Brian’s head and he had to be hospitalized.

The severe TBI Brian suffered resulted in months of rehab, including having to learn how to remember simple things. His injury would cause him to forget things as simple as his wallet, and he would leave it at the store.

Brian’s wife remembers her husband was perpetually frustrated by the effects of the TBI, and it took about a year and a half before he was even close to normal. But he was determined to work at it and saw any possible new hardship because of the TBI as a challenge.

“After a while it was great,” Mary Beth said. “That’s how he worked at it.

[He’d say,] ‘They think I’m not going to do it. I’m going to do it.’ And he worked at everything.”

She admits at the beginning it was scary. Right after the injury, Brian was in a bit of denial. He wanted to drive

and go to work. He would eventually work up to those things, but he was restless.

He wanted to remember what happened to him.

So Brian decided, with some encouragement from Mary Beth, to write down his story. He relied on her and others to help him with the fuzzy details.

“Most people didn’t want to talk about it,” Brian said. “They want to forget what they remember. I wanted to remember what I forgot.”

Once he completed the book, he sent it out to publishers and it was accepted and published by Tate Publishing in 2009. The book received praise from not only readers who related to his struggles, but also from professionals who study TBIs and said the book was a realistic portrayal of the experience of

dealing with such an injury.

Production for the movie began about two years ago, and while it was delayed because of lack of funding, eventually planning began and actors were cast.

Two 9 Productions and Road 28 Productions are collaborating in the making of the film, which is set for an April 2018 release.

The movie stars actors Shannon Brown as Brian and Kelly Thiebaud as Mary Beth.

Another notable cast member is Jim O’Heir, known for his role as Jerry Gergich on the sitcom “Parks and

One last gift for a life to remember

Family will celebrate matriarch’s 100th birthday by opening book of sketches

JOLIET – On May 28, the family of Marion Mahoney will gather to celebrate Marion’s 100th birthday.

Marion won’t be present. She died Oct. 5, 2014, at the age of 97.

But she left behind a special gift for her great-grandchildren no one has seen because Marion requested the gift be opened on her 100th birthday, Patricia Thomson of Plainfield, Marion’s daughter, said.

An artist, Marion took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago to learn the technique for enhancing ages. In 2005, Marion sketched her great-grandchildren as they looked at that time. She then did second sketches, as they might look as young adults 12 years later.

Marion’s family will see that book for the first time May 28, a day that will certainly top Marion’s 90th birthday, when she executed a perfect dive off the board into the family swimming pool, Patricia said.

But that was typical Marion.

“She was very independent and lived by herself until six months before she died,” Patricia said.

Born and raised in Joliet, Marion was a lifelong member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond, which also turns 100 this year, an event Marion had hoped to see, Patricia said.

Marion grew up playing piano and taking lessons, mostly because her own mother, Cora Culley Sieben, was a concert pianist, but art and writing were Marion’s passions, Patricia said.

Patricia said when Cora’s husband proposed to her, he gave her a Steinway concert grand piano and a piece of advice.

“He said, ‘If you marry me, you’ll have more love and comfort in your later years than you’ll ever get from an audience,’” Patricia said.

As a teacher, Marion taught art at Troy Craughwell School in Joliet. As an artist, she won blue ribbons for her oil paintings. As a young mother, she designed a child’s smocked dress and won a contest in Chicago.

back to the Revolutionary War. To work through her grief after her husband, Jeremiah Mahoney, died, Marion wrote letters to him each day.

“She sadly confessed that late afternoons and evenings are difficult because, ‘I no longer have anyone to do nothing with,’” Patricia said.

But Marion wasn’t one to stay down.

She returned to piano lessons when she was in her 70s and 80s. At 85, Marion signed up for a German class at Joliet Junior College and then traveled alone to Austria and Germany, Patricia said.

When Marion visited Spain, she communicated with others by drawing pictures of what she needed, since she could not speak Spanish.

“Art was a universal language to her,” Patricia wrote in an email.

Marion made it a rule never to turn down an invitation, Patricia said. That led her to join three clubs (book, bridge and doll), and attend all the plays, musical programs and sporting events of her 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She participated in a creative writers guild, wrote many stories with the goal of eventual publication and realized her dream, Patricia said.

Marion loved to “zip around” in her white Volkswagen convertible, always wearing a flower in her snow-white hair, Patricia said. But when macular degeneration ended her driving days at age 85, Marion switched to an electric scooter and drove that around town, she added.

Finally in 2013, at the age of 96, a children’s book Marion wrote and illustrated called “My Mike” was published as an eBook by Eckhartz Press, a boutique publisher in Chicago.

At one point, Marion also had won several local writing contests, including one on “Why I love Plainfield,” Patricia said. Patricia also said Modern Maturity published one of Marion’s articles.

Shorewood kids express love for their Little Free Library VIEWS Kris Stadalsky SHOREWOOD – Kids living near Walnut Trails Elementary School in Shorewood can now walk over and pick out library books just outside the school, thanks to the installation of a Little Free Library.

Walnut Trails Principal Kathleen Cheshareck thought it would be neat to be a part of the Little Free Library system, a nonprofit organization that seeks to inspire a love of reading, build communities and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.

There are about 50,000 Little Free Libraries around the world in over 70 countries, and now Shorewood can stake its claim on the map of libraries.

Walnut Trails has the first Little Free Library in Shorewood, Cheshareck said.

Cheshareck opted not to buy one of the ready-made boxes, which can be expensive. She instead turned to retired district custodian Jerry Blair for help, since woodworking is his hobby.

Blair not only built the library box but added his own custom touches, including an American flag on a stand, a desk and an old-fashioned blackboard.

“It’s beautiful,” Cheshareck said.

“It resembles a little red schoolhouse.”

The idea of Little Free Library is to take a book to read, keep it if you like and donate a book if you can. Millions of books are exchanged each year through Little Free Libraries all over the world, greatly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

Little Free Libraries encourage a love of reading in areas where books are scarce.

Many of the Little Free Libraries are designed for people of all ages, but the Shorewood one is geared toward primary and intermediate grade school kids.

Because it’s right in front of the school, it’s been getting a lot of business when kids are dropped off or picked up by the school buses.

“The kids are using it all the time, it’s very exciting for them,” Cheshareck said.

To start the library, the school

Walnut Trails students love to get books from the Little Free Library in front of the school. asked parents to donate gently used books. Now they have a stockpile to keep the library full of children’s books so over the summer kids can keep getting them.

Cheshareck loves that it’s in walking distance of homes in the neighborhood; and people in the neighborhood have been dropping off books.

“It’s a nice addition to the community,” she said. “So far, the

kids love it.”

In a quick search on the Little Free Library website, within 20 miles of Channahon I found one Little Free Library in Morris, one in Minooka, eight in Joliet, six in New Lenox, one in Mokena, one in Orland Park, two in Oswego, two in Yorkville, one in Naperville and seven in Bolingbrook.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – The East Joliet Fire Protection District chief has declined to discuss possible causes of the fire that burned down the Joliet Township home where 1-year-old Sema’j Crosby was found dead last month.

Chief Robert Scholtes said late Saturday that the investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office was still ongoing and that he would not discuss any possible causes of the blaze, which occurred early Saturday morning.

Initially, a news release from the Will County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday stated the East Joliet fire agency would not be sending an arson investigator, but later in the morning, a second news release stated an arson investigator would attempt to determine the cause or origin of the fire.

The fire was reported about 6 a.m.

Saturday by neighbors, who saw smoke coming from the structure at 309 Louis Road. The home was empty and had been deemed unfit for habitation by the Will County Land Use Department after Sema’j was discov-

Brown said that playing Brian, a real person who is still alive, is a particular challenge for an actor who usually plays fictional characters.

“I’ll be honest, it keeps me up at night sometimes,” Brown said. “Because, again, I can’t make a mockery out of it, but I also can’t play it safe and vanilla. I got to push the envelope for the film to be successful.”

Ultimately, Brian said, the whole process is not about him. He wants to give the millions of people who have been affected by TBI hope by telling his story.

“I thought I had a good story that might be optimistic,” he said. “It might show the better side of what you can do.”

Olympic swim champion Adolph Kiefer dies at 98

The Associated Press Adolph Kiefer, the 100-meter backstroke champion at the 1936 Berlin Games who was America’s oldest living Olympic gold medalist in any sport, has died. He was 98.

He died Friday at his home in Wadsworth, Illinois, about 50 miles north of Chicago, according to grandson Robin Kiefer said.

Kiefer had been hospitalized with pneumonia in recent months. He had neuropathy that kept him confined to a wheelchair later in life, but he continued swimming because he could still stand in the water, Robin Kiefer said.

Kiefer became an Olympic champion as a 17-year-old in an Olympic-record time that stood for 20 years. He was also the first man to break 1 minute in the 100 backstroke, doing so as a high school swimmer in Illinois. He later competed for the University of Texas.

“He didn’t like the level of technology being applied to what he thought was a pretty pure sport,” Robin Kiefer said. “The prices of the suits he thought were crazy.”

“There will never be another like Adolph Kiefer,” said Bruce Wigo, president of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. “Not only was he a great swimmer and businessman, but he was a great human being, husband and father whose memory will live on as a model and inspiration for future generations of swimmers and non-swimmers alike.”

In 1944, Kiefer enlisted in the Navy when it was losing thousands of lives to drownings. Kiefer was appointed to establish a safety curriculum and train officers how to survive in the water.

His “victory backstroke” was credited with helping save thousands of lives in the final years of World War II and later was adopted by the American Red Cross.

“He considers it to be his greatest achievement, hands-down,”

Robin Kiefer said.

Robin Kiefer recalled his family’s vacations as a child always involved water, whether it was scuba diving or sailing. He said his grandfather’s four children and their offspring all learned to swim and observe water safety.

“Adolph Kiefer embodied swimming and lived it every day of his life.

He was a pioneer for our sport in the truest sense of the word,” USA Swimming interim executive director Mike Unger said in a statement. “Adolph was so passionate about swimming and exuded it to everyone.”

Kiefer was inducted into the inaugural class of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1965. He served on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition for three presidents.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died of cancer in 2015. They were married for 73 years. He is survived by their four children, Dale, Cathy, Jack and Gail; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

His education was vast, earning his bachelor’s degree in education from Adams State, two master’s in education from University of Illinois and a doctorate in Secondary Education from Nova University in Florida.

His coaching career began in Branson, CO, and extended to Buda, IL, Bradley-Bourbonnais, IL, and Joliet West High School. He was admired for his expertise and skill in the areas of track, football, and basketball where he left a trail of state championships and titles in his path.

Richard’s teaching career spanned a total of 37 years with knowledge in U.S. history and civics taught at the high school level. He was an adjunct professor at Joliet Junior College for 33 years teaching psychology. After

Illinois schools opt for virtual summer learning programs

WESTMONT – Some Illinois school districts are revamping their summer school programs this year with virtual programs designed to allow students to complete lessons outside of the classroom.

But education experts are worried that online learning programs aren’t the best approach for younger students, the Chicago Tribune reported. They are questioning whether the move is because of the school districts’ desire to cut costs and redirect money at a time when the state is $13 billion behind in allocating school funds due to the budget impasse.

“They’re thinking it’s cost-effective, but it may not be learning-effective,” said Rena Shifflet, an associate professor at Illinois State University’s School of Teaching and Learning. “Illinois has kind of backed school districts into a corner. They’re doing the most with what they have.”

The Maercker School District opted for the program because of fewer students enrolling in its summer programs because of transportation issues and kids’ busy summer schedules.

Gang helped investigators in officers’ shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago police said two plainclothes officers shot last week were mistaken for rival street-gang members and that other gang members cooperated with police when that became clear.

Deenihan said several La Raza gang members helped identify a driver and a shooter who opened fire from a van Tuesday. He said they knew it was “a different game” once they realized police, not rivals, were shot as they sat in an unmarked car.

Police on Saturday announced attempted murder charges against the alleged driver, 18-year-old Angel Gomez. The shooter is still being sought.

Chicago U.S. appeals court considers TV coverage

CHICAGO – A Chicago-based federal appeals court is looking into allowing TV cameras to cover some of its proceedings.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin has reported that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could join state high courts and several federal appellate courts in permitting live broadcasts.

History museum to honor designer Carolina Herrera

CHICAGO – The Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum is honoring fashion designer Carolina Herrera .

The 78-year-old Venezuelan-American designer will receive the museum’s Designer of Excellence Award on May 15 in Chicago.

The museum’s council gives the award to designers who it says have “indelibly left their mark on the fashion world.”

Past recipients include Bob Mackie, Sonia Rykiel and Geoffrey Beene.

Herrera’s first ready-to-wear collection debuted in 1981 and she opened a New York business shortly afterward. Celebrities like Renee Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon have worn her designs along with first ladies like Michelle Obama and Laura Bush.

4 killed when car collides head-on with Chicago bus

CHICAGO – Four people were killed when the car they were in collided head-on early Sunday with a Chicago city bus, police said.

The car, which was speeding, hit a parked vehicle before it veered out of control into the oncoming Chicago Transit Authority bus at around 6 a.m. on the city’s west side, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman.

People in the East Garfield Park neighborhood rushed to the scene and tried to pull victims out of the car, but they couldn’t because smoke and flames around the car were too intense, witness Malinda Demery told reporters.

“We had to get them out. They were pinned inside there,” Commander Curtis Hudson, with the Chicago Fire Department, said later.

Television footage showed the twisted wreckage of the car in the middle of the street in front of the No. 20 CTA bus, which appeared largely intact.

The bus driver and four passengers were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, another police spokesman, Officer Michael Carroll, said later Sunday.

There were no other car passengers, he said. Police did not immediately release the identities of those who died.

The Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times cited police as saying they were all in their 20s.

The police department’s major accident unit and the CTA were investigating the crash.

PARIS – Ripping up France’s political map, French voters elected independent centrist Emmanuel Macron as the country’s youngest president Sunday, delivering a resounding victory to the unabashedly pro-European former investment banker and dashing the populist dream of far-right rival Marine Le Pen. Macron, who had never run for office before, celebrated with thousands of jubilant, flag-waving supporters outside the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday night.

Jackson Invite used to prepare for state meet

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Plainfield North boys track and field coach Tony Holler is passionate about his sport, so it’s understandable that he’s excited by what he’s seen from his team this season.

Last week, the Tigers were ranked as the state’s fourth-best team in Class 3A by MileSplit Illinois. Then on Friday, despite not competing with a full lineup, they were edged out by Huntley, in Lockport’s Bill Jackson ABC Invite.

One of Illinois’ biggest stories this season has been the emergence of North freshman Marcellus Moore.

He not only set state-best marks in the 100-meters (10.55 seconds) and 200 (21.28) on April 8 at Belleville West, but those times also are the best for any freshman in the nation.

However on Friday, Moore suffered his first loss of the year when he got edged by Huntley’s Dubem Anikamadu in the 100. But in a clear signal of how he wasn’t going to let that setback get him down, the freshman won the 200 by .75 seconds over Anikamadu.

“When my kid runs a 10.65 and gets beat, that’s a pretty exciting race,” said Holler of the 100. “And I was so impressed with the way that Marcellus did not draw attention to himself after getting beat for the first time all year.

Instead he quietly went out in the 200 and just dominated. It was exactly the way that you want a kid to respond. He made some really great sprinters look pedestrian in that 200.

“We’ve got a lot of team speed and depth and we can be missing two of our best five kids tonight and a lot of people might not notice it because

Lewis women’s track repeats as GLVC champs SUBMITTED REPORTS

RENSSELAER, Ind. – The Lewis University women’s track and field team defended its title in the Great Lakes Valley Conference championships by winning the outdoor conference meet with 194 points. Flyers coach Dana Schwarting also was named the GLVC Coach of the Year.

Allison Heinzer took second in both the 400- and 200-meter dash. She finished the 400 in 56.52 seconds and the 200 in 25.27 and also was named the GLVC Freshmen of the Year. Diona Johnson also ran the 100, finishing in a time of 12.07, good enough for second place. Zoe Mead won the 800- meter run in 2:10.33, which was a provisional qualifying time.

Cierra Pulliam took second in the long jump after making a provisional qualifying mark of 5.81 meters. Pulliam also won the 100 in a time of 11.93 and took first in the triple jump after scoring a provisional mark of 12.29 meters.

Plainfield South coach Jason Crowe likes the way that his team has been improving of late. On Friday, state qualifier Ben Thoms bounced back from a false-start in the 110 hurdles to take second in the 300 hurdles, Chris Mikkelsen was third in pole vault and South also took second in the 4x200 relay and third in the 4x800 relay.

“I’m proud of how the guys have been competing this year,” Crowe said. “We’re growing week after week and we saw that tonight with some of our performances. We’re coming together as a team and the guys are starting to find their identity as a group and tonight they competed for each other. The guys just need to believe in their training and at the same time also just keep improving so that they can achieve their goals at the end of the season.”

In his 27th season leading Lockport, Tom Razo is the dean of area boys coaches. He’s had many fine teams and while this is a young squad their coach is excited about the future. He saw several positives at his meet, which he has made into one of the best around.

Phoenix Smallwood earned a provisional mark in the long jump after a 5.85 meter leap, enough to place her first for the event. She also earned a provisional mark in triple jump after going 12.08 meters and taking second place.

Lane Kadlec placed second in discus throw with a toss of 48.60 meters, which was a provisional qualifying mark and he also claimed a provisional mark in shot put after tossing for 14.02 meters, enough for second place. Kianna Clark took third in the hammer throw at 50.66 meters.

Amanda Farrough was first in the 5,000, finishing in 17:13.79 and earning a provisional qualification. She also took second in the 1,500, finishing in 4:40.25. Megan Shaffer won the 3,000 steeplechase after finishing in 11:02.81.

In the 4x100 relay, Johnson, Heinzer, Pulliam and Charlyncia Stennis took first, crossing the finish at 46.66, worthy of a provisional qualification. Courtney Cross, Heinzer,

Stennis and Mead ran the 4x400 relay finishing in second in 3:54.45.

USF third at CCAC: Raven Kelly took firsts in the hammer throw (190-6) and shot put (47-41/2) to win the Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet.

Jenna Moody won the 400 (55.57) and 200 (25.28), Isi Edeko took first in triple jump (39-33/4), Gracie Ball won the 3,000 steeplechase (11:29.96) and their 4x800 relay (9:24.61) of Catherine Crosson, Lesley Lopez, Bre Rodriguez and Ashlee Knott also placed first.

Ambrose and Olivet Nazarene, 223199, to win their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference outdoor title. Kyle Mitchell was named the Outstanding Field Performer after winning discus (156-2) and taking second in the shot put (54-2 1/2 ). Jordan Duncan won the 100 (10.75) and was second in the 200 (21.36). Other USF winners were Ryan Bauers in

the hammer throw (158-7), Brandon Ruffin in the high jump (1.96) Cam Knudsen in the 5,000 (15:13.05) and Alex Cooper in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:56.68).

Lewis fifth in GLVC: The Flyers took fifth place with 102.5 points.

Adam Barr completed the final day of the championships earning a provisional mark in discus with a 50.13 meter throw, placing him fourth. In the hammer throw, Barr was able to earn a provisional mark after a 55.01 toss that put him fourth for the event.

Sergio Miranda came in first in the 800, finishing in 1:55.33. Bryce Holesinger took first in the javelin after throwing 53.90. Richie Castro took third in the pole vault after getting over the bar set at 4.55 meters.

Marcus Holley took second in the decathlon with 5,951 points, which he earned from his third-place finish in the javelin (44.33), second in long jump (6.26), second place in the pole vault (4.50), second in the 110 hurdles (16.45) and third in the 100 (11.37).

Something that Razo can count on is the presence of one of the top throwers in the country, junior John Meyer. The defending Class 3A champion in shot put also won a medal in discus when he was a freshman. He looks as if he could pick up medals in each event this year.

Meyer went 65-41/2 Friday in shot to better his mark of 65-2 set April 15 at Minooka. Fremd’s Ethan Hanson, who had a 62-11 put at the Jackson, ranks second-best in Class 3A. Meyer’s most-recent effort in shot ranks him ninth nationally. He also has the fifth-best discus throw in the state at 179-10, which he also turned in at Minooka.

Beside Meyer’s wins in shot and discus at the invite, the Porters also received good finishes from Conor McCarthy, who took second in the long jump third in the triple jump, and from Ray Holland, who was fourth in the 110 hurdles.

“Year-in and year-out, the programs we bring in are top-notch and the meet has even gotten stronger in the last few years,” Razo said. “We have a young group, but they’re competing hard. Brett Hespell and Robert Beach coach multiple sports and Zac Sartori and Brent Brock are also former athletes and it’s nice to see them coming back to contribute.

If you are an avid baseball fan, you may remember Ortiz pitching in the big leagues. With the Texas Rangers in 2013, the 5-foot-7 left-hander relieved in 32 games and was 2-2 with a 4.23 ERA. In 442/3 innings, he allowed 46 hits and 10 walks while striking out 27. He turned 23 on Aug. 14 of that season.

He also spent part of 2013 in Triple-A and all of 2014 in Double-A. The Cubs claimed him off waivers in October of 2014, and he pitched at Triple-A Iowa in 2015.

“He had a chance with the Cubs to make the team out of spring training in 2015, and he was the last guy sent to Iowa,” Isom said. “He was there a half-year and got injured and wound up being out the last year and a half.

“But he pitched winter ball this offseason, and he is here trying to show major league teams that he’s healthy.

He’s a lefty who throws 91, 92, and he

knows how to pitch.”

The Slammers struggled with their pitching last season yet still won the Frontier League East title.

“Last year, if our starting pitching got us six innings with five runs allowed, that was a success,” Isom said. “This year, the back end of our [bull]pen could be a strength. Bullpen guys were more available to me than starters this offseason.”

Isom said Confesor Lara, who helped solidify the Slammers’ bullpen when he arrived last season, begins 2017 as the closer. He was released by the Twins out of spring training.

“A healthy Kevin McNorton made a ton of strides in the offseason,” Isom said, reviewing other bullpen candidates. “Kaleb Ort was released by the Diamondbacks and is back. Kevin Simmons did a good job here.

“And, we have Joe Ortiz.”

Ortiz hails from Caracas, Venezuela.

“We have guys on our roster from everywhere,” Isom said. “[Outfielder Marc] Flores, [infielder] Ridge HoopiiHaslem and [catcher Steven] Pollakov played together at the University of Hawaii. We have four Puerto Ricans,

one Dominican and one Venezuelan.”

Regardless of their roots, however, the Slammers’ measure of success may be determined by how well the starting pitching performs when the firing begins for real Thursday night at Lake Erie.

“If we can get average starts, we can be OK,” Isom said. “Liam O’Sullivan had a surgery, so he is out for the year. He was very good for us last year. That’s a big hole to fill. Our starters to begin with probably will be Danny Concepcion, Tyler House, Shane Bryant and Justin Lawrence, with the fifth spot up in the air.”

You never know when you will hit on a pleasant surprise.

“At this time last year, we did not know what we had in Liam [O’Sullivan],” Isom said. “Maybe a couple of our starters this year can be surprises.”

That would go a long way toward producing a successful season, as Isom feels the Slammers will hit and the bullpen will be dependable.

Renteria ejected as White Sox get swept by Orioles

BALTIMORE – The refreshing April air in the White Sox’s balloon is leaking out this May. Sunday’s 4-0 loss, the conclusive blow of a three-game sweep by the Orioles, marked the Sox’s sixth loss in the past eight games.

More dispiriting was that it came as ace Jose Quintana, excellent in his previous two starts after a lackluster start, retreated again with a messy four-run performance over 96 pitches and five innings. Quintana (2-5, 4.46 ERA), considered the hottest trade commodity during spring training, got outpitched

by Chris Tillman to ensure a sour finish to a 4-6 road trip that began with two wins against the Tigers and a four-game split with the Royals.

A blown opportunity to put Tillman on the ropes early, three Quintana walks in the first two innings, bloop Orioles singles within inches of each foul line and a couple of debated ballstrike calls was more than Sox manager Ricky Renteria could stomach in one afternoon. Renteria, for something he shouted from the dugout after a striketwo call to Avisail Garcia in the third inning, got ejected for the first time (not

“He ejected me, and that’s all I can say,” Renteria said.

“They were able to minimize damage with their pitching, and we need to play cleaner baseball. I think we have for the most part all season.”

But not Sunday, and the first inning set the tone. Tillman, making his season debut after missing spring training

with right shoulder bursitis, walked Melky Cabrera and Leury Garcia on nine pitches to start the game. But Jose Abreu, one of the game’s hottest hitters of late, helped Tillman by swinging at what looked like ball four running in on his hands and popped out. After Avisail Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice with Leury Garcia beating third baseman Manny Machado’s attempted force throw to second, Todd Frazier lined out

to shortstop and Cody Asche grounded softly to first, letting Tillman off the hook.

Quintana walked two of the first three batters, and a bobble by shortstop Tyler Saladino allowed Mark Trumbo to safely load the bases. The O’s capitalized, scoring runs on a sacrifice fly by Chris Davis and single by Trey Mancini to make it 2-0 after one.

“It was a battle the whole game – the first three innings especially,” Quintana said. “It was a tough day for me all day.”

And a tough series for the Sox. The Orioles, improving to 20-10 for the first time since 2005, completed their first three-game home sweep of the Sox in 18 years.

The Sox had a two-hit day from Frazier and three hits from Yolmer Sanchez, and they had eight hits altogether but were unable to glean anything from whatever opportunities those hits presented.

“It was the first bad series we’ve had,” Quintana said. “You turn the page and do what we were doing before. Everybody knows that. Be ready for the next series.”

That will begin Tuesday at home against the Twins.

Jeff Isom is front and center when it comes to a major reason he manages independent professional baseball.

“We had six guys off last year’s team that were signed by major league organizations. That’s why I do this,” the Joliet Slammers manager said. “I believe that was the most of any independent team outside of the Atlantic League.”

The Frontier League, where the Slammers toil, has an age ceiling for players of 27. It doesn’t happen often, but we occasionally hear of a former Frontier League player who makes the major leagues.

When independent baseball arrived in Joliet, the JackHammers were members of the Northern League, where age limitations were less restrictive than in the Frontier League. That meant fans who attended games at Silver Cross Field had the opportunity to see a former major leaguer or two take their cuts or do some pitching.

That perk of having professional baseball in Joliet virtually is gone.

“Virtually” is appropriate because the Slammers will begin the season with a relief pitcher named Joe Ortiz

Anderson heads to 10-day DL, replacement coming

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – The Cubs don’t have to do anything right away about an open spot in their starting rotation, but it looks like they will go one of two ways.

They placed left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson on the 10-day disabled list Sunday because of a strained lower back. Anderson injured himself during the first inning of Saturday night’s 11-6 loss to the New York Yankees at Wrigley Field.

Manager Joe Maddon indicated the Cubs would either move lefty Mike Montgomery out of the bullpen to take Anderson’s spot, or they would recall right-hander Eddie Butler from Triple-A Iowa.

“We can do a lot of different things,” Maddon said. “Just watching these guys pitch the next three days, does anybody need an extra day? Do you want to pop in a sixth guy in there? There are so many

different ways to look at it because of the Thursday, Monday (off-days) coming up. So we haven’t committed to anything yet except that it would be one of those two guys.”

The Iowa shuttle: To replace Anderson on the roster, the Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Justin Grimm from Iowa. He had been sent to Iowa on Friday.

The Cubs also recalled infielder Tommy La Stella from Iowa and optioned left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny to Iowa. Zastryzny worked four innings Saturday night upon being called up. La Stella opened the season on the big-league roster.

“I’m feeling OK,” he said Sunday.

“It’s a little bit of a different approach being down there and getting four or five ABs every night. You take a little bit of a different approach. When you get your one (at-bat) in the seventh and you get your pitch, you don’t want to miss it.

“I just wanted to make sure I was getting back into the flow of the game a little bit. It had been awhile. It had been a few years since I was able to play consistently every day and get four and five ABs. Just kind of estab-

It’s bittersweet because hopefully he’s going to get an opportunity to take on a little bit more of an expanded role somewhere else. We’re definitely going to miss him around here.”

naproxen, the number of events at 15 mg was six times higher than the lower dose of meloxicam (1 in 500 people). Another study showed a greater proportion of people taking 22.5 mg of the drug for 12 weeks had a slight decrease in kidney function. This was not seen at the 15 mg dosage.

Lastly, for people on two types of blood pressure drugs – ACE-inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers – meloxicam (like other NSAIDs) may make those medications less effective.

In summary, meloxicam works well for pain and swelling. The higher doses do decrease pain more than the 7.5 mg dosage, and the medication is comparable to the NSAID diclofenac for both pain relief and decreasing inflammation. I have frequently recommended the medication for joint inflammation, bone bruises and pain from fractures and tendonitis, and it’s worked well for the majority of my patients. For older adults, I lean toward the 7.5 mg dose, but I have recommended 15 mg in more severe cases. Some of the latter group have complained of gastrointestinal discomfort, but this stopped when they discontinued the medication. I rarely give this medication for greater than one month, but have had some patients with severe arthritis who have been on this medication for years.

I don’t know how frequently you are using meloxicam, but if you’re using it on an as-needed basis, it should be safe. If you’re using this medication daily, you should consider its potential for side effects.

Dear Doctor: I’ve suffered joint pain for years. Being prescribed 15 milligrams of meloxicam has been wonderful. What are your thoughts on meloxicam use?

Dear Reader: Meloxicam (Mobic) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that, like all such drugs, inhibits the formation of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of molecules that boost inflammation and help the blood clot.

There are two forms of the COX enzyme, aptly named COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 is involved in protecting the lining of the stomach, promoting the blood’s clotting ability and aiding kidney function. COX-2 is involved in the inflammatory response in the body. Many of the side effects seen with older NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac, are related to the inhibition of COX-1. The side effects include gastritis or gastric ulcers, blood thinning and kidney damage. Inhibiting COX-2 leads to a decrease in inflammation and a decrease in pain.

Meloxicam at low doses (7.5 milligrams) inhibits COX-2 and not COX-1. That means it can reduce pain and inflammation without irritation of the stomach lining or an increased risk of stomach ulcers. Research has found serious upper gastrointestinal events at the 7.5 mg dose occur in fewer than 1 in 3,000 people. But note that follow-up studies didn’t last more than 60 days, so it’s unclear if these rates would hold up over the long term.

Further, at low doses, meloxicam may not trigger the kidney problems other NSAIDs cause. The rates of heart attacks appear comparable to those of other NSAIDs, with a slight increase in risk at all doses.

However, when meloxicam dosage is increased to 15 mg, the medication does inhibit COX-1, leading to a significant increase in the rates of serious upper gastrointestinal events.

If you think readers are going to fill your inbox with nothing but praise every day, you are in the wrong business. The way to get beyond this would be to ask yourself whether the criticism was valid. If it was, then learn from it.

If it wasn’t, realize by dwelling on negativity, you hurt only yourself. You should discuss your extreme anxiety with a licensed mental health professional. If you cannot break this self-defeating pattern, consider switching to another kind of writing, because constantly second-guessing yourself will only hold you back in your career.

Dear Abby: I was about to break off the relationship with my girlfriend two years ago, right before she was diagnosed with cancer. Because of the diagnosis, I decided to stay while she was fighting. After two years of chemo, radiation and many, many surgeries, she’s still fighting hard and may beat it. But I’m ready to move on with my life. However, here, West might have led a club on the shortest-suit principle -- partner’s longest suit will be my shortest.

What is a nine lead? Top of nothing. So East should know that South has the spade A-Q-J-10. Then, playing the king gives declarer four spade tricks and nine in all. But if East ignores third hand high and calmly plays the spade three, declarer cannot find a ninth trick.
