bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County judge has decided three brothers of the 1-year-old who was found dead April 27 in her Joliet Township home should not be in their mother’s custody.

Judge Paula Gomora on Tuesday ordered the 10-year-old, 8-year-old and 2-year-old boys to be placed with other relatives or in foster care, according to court records.

The day after Sema’j Crosby’s body was found under a couch at her house in the 300 block of Louis Road in the Preston Heights area, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office filed petitions to seek “shelter care” for the boys – either living with approved relatives or Sema’j placed in traditional fos- Crosby ter care. “[Their younger] sibling, Sema’j, died of unexplained causes and circumstances, was found in the home and the home is currently uninhabitable,” the documents stated.

Will County Sheriff’s police said Sheri Gordon had been renting the house and living there with her children and a number of squatters.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the state had to show Gomora there was probable cause to demonstrate the children were neglected, abused or dependent. The judge then had to decide whether there was “urgent necessity” to remove them from parental custody.

Investigators have said the house was littered with trash and infested with bugs. An inspector from the Department of Children and Family Services visited the house hours before Sema’j disappeared, but reported no action was needed.

Records obtained by the Chicago SunTimes in a Freedom of Information Act request show two of the 59 visits to the home were welfare checks. Forty of those calls were for probation checks.

The Sun-Times reported reasons for sheriff’s visits between February 2016 and April 2017 included “disturbances, “crisis intervention,” delivering subpoenas and “public service.”

The sheriff’s office said it’s unknown how much time the girl spent in the home because her parents did not live together.

The department said her death is “an ongoing criminal investigation.”

According to the judge’s decision, the 10-year-old boy temporarily was put into DCFS custody, but could reside with his father. The 2-year-old and 8-year-old, who have different fathers, also were placed with DCFS.

Once James Crosby, who also was Sema’j’s father, takes a paternity test, the 8-year-old’s custody “may be reconsidered [if Crosby’s housing] is found appropriate upon the minor’s discharge from [the hospital],” court files stated.

Sema’j’s brother has been hospitalized for unknown reasons. DCFS will pay $135 for the DNA test, court records show.

Authorities have not said how Sema’j died. The Will County Coroner’s Office has said additional forensic testing will take four to five weeks.

Visitation for Sema’j has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at Prayer Tower Ministries, 500 Stryker Ave. in Joliet, according to the Minor-Morris Funeral Home website. After an 11 a.m. service at the church, Sema’j will be buried at Elmhurst Cemetery, 1212 E. Washington St. in Joliet.

THE END OF A LEGACY 100-year-old grocery co-op files for bankruptcy

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Central Grocers has notified workers that it plans to shut down its Joliet operations, putting nearly 550 people out of work by mid-July.

The notice was given before the Joliet-based company filed for bankruptcy Thursday.

Central Grocers has been trying to find a buyer for the warehouse, but none has emerged, President and CEO Ken Nemeth said in a notice to employees.

He said Central Grocers now plans to sell the Joliet facility at an auction.

“At present, no potential buyer has stepped forward who intends to operate the facility on an ongoing basis as a distribution center,” Nemeth said in the letter, which was obtained by The Herald-News. “Therefore, we do not expect that any potential purchaser will be making offers of employment to the employees employed at the property.”

The notice was given under the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires companies to give employees advance notice of large layoffs.

“We expect all of the operations will be wound down in the next six to eight weeks,” Nemeth said in the notice.

He said the company expects employees to be terminated between June 26 and July 10.

Workers outside the warehouse Thursday said they were not surprised by the announcement that the facility would be closed, although one said he was not yet convinced that it would happen.

“They’ve been saying that for a month,” said the worker, who declined to give his name. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Two others, however, agreed that the warehouse was shutting down.

A news release from the company and the bankruptcy filing describe operations at the warehouse as winding down before it is sold. According to the bankruptcy filing, the company already has started liquidating inventory at the warehouse.

Central Grocers is primarily a grocery wholesaler that has been in business since 1917 and distributes its own brand of products under the Centrella label.

The Joliet facility employs 549 people, including just less than 400 Teamsters, according to Nemeth’s letter.

Teamsters Local 703 did not immediately return calls for comment.

A company spokesman declined to comment on the WARN notice.

Central Grocers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, claiming total assets of $262 million and liabilities of $232 million.

The filing came after a group of suppliers that included Coca-Cola and General Mills went to court Tuesday with a petition seeking to force the company into Chapter 7 bankruptcy to collect on claims totaling more than $1.8 million.

In addition to its wholesale operations, Central Grocers owns the Strack & Van Til supermarket chain. The company said it will continue with the plan announced last month to sell 22 of those stores.

Local lawmakers follow party lines on health bill House OKs GOP health bill, a step toward repeal of Affordable Care Act

fsarver@shawmedia.com Republicans pushed a health care bill through the House of Representatives on Thursday, taking their biggest step toward dismantling the Affordable Care Act since Donald Trump became president.

House Republicans won passage of the American Health Care Act only after overcoming their own divisions that nearly sank the measure six weeks ago.

Republicans have pledged to erase the ACA since its 2010 enactment but polls have shown a public distaste for repeal efforts and a gain in popularity for former President Barack Obama’s law.

Democrats insisted Republicans will pay at election time for repealing major provisions of the law. Democrats defended the law for expanding coverage to 20 million Americans and forcing insurers to offer more generous benefits, and said the Republicans’ measure would toss millions off coverage while delivering tax cuts to the wealthy.

The AHCA skirted through the House by a thin 217-213 vote. All voting Democrats and 20 Republican holdouts voted no. The bill will face an uncertain fate in the Senate, where even Republican lawmakers say major changes are likely.

Congressional lawmakers with districts in Will County who voted against the bill were representatives Bill Foster, D-Naperville; Daniel Lipinski, D-Western Springs; Robin Kelly, D-Matteson; and Bobby Rush, D-Chicago.

Voting for the bill were representatives Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon; and Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

Hultgren said in a statement that the ACA’s “downward spiral is accelerating,” as three of seven counties in the 14th Congressional District are left with only one insurance carrier on the ACA exchange. He also stated there are communities in the district that saw premium increases of up to 77.3 percent this year.

“The forecast for next year is more desperate, which is why I support moving a solution forward that does something to protect care for people in the 14th District,” Hultgren said.

AHCA is a “tragic symbolic victory” and it stands no chance in the Senate.

He said the bill would be an “unmitigated disaster for hardworking Americans” because the Congressional Budget Office determined that under the original AHCA, 24 million Americans would lose their health insurance.

“The current version [of AHCA] was not even scored because the Republican leadership rushed it to a vote before the CBO could evaluate an amendment added late last night that opens the door for states to gut pre-existing condition protections and allow insurance companies to sell plans that don’t cover doctors’ visits, hospital stays or

prescription drugs,” Foster said.

The CBO estimated in March the AHCA would end coverage for 24 million people over a decade and its subsidies would be less generous for many, especially lower-earning and older people not yet 65 and qualifying for Medicare.

Passage Thursday of the AHCA was the result of heavy lobbying by the White House and Republicans leaders, plus late revisions that nailed down the final supporters needed.

“Many of us are here because we pledged to cast this very vote,” Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said.

“Are we going to keep the promises that we made, or are we going to falter?”

The Republican bill would eliminate tax penalties under the ACA, which applied to people who don’t buy coverage, and it erases tax increases in the ACA on higher-earning people and the health industry.

The bill also cuts the Medicaid program for low-income people and lets states impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients. It transforms the ACA’s subsidies for millions buying insurance – largely based on people’s incomes and premium costs – into tax credits that rise with consumers’ ages.

family policies cover grown children until age 26.

But states could get federal waivers freeing insurers from other coverage requirements. With waivers, insurers could charge people with pre-existing illnesses far higher rates than healthy customers, boost prices for older consumers to whatever they wish and ignore the mandate that they cover specified services such pregnancy care.

The bill would block federal payments to Planned Parenthood for a year.

Joliet churches lead community in prayer Congregations among those who participate in National Day of Prayer

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The power of prayer was demonstrated by several Joliet church leaders as they prayed for peace, unity, families, schools and more.

A National Day of Prayer was held at Old Central Church by the Joliet branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Dozens from the community came to pray along with pastors in recognition of the importance of the act.

Prayer serves as people’s access to God, said Maurice Fears, Smith Family YMCA executive director.

“We cannot forfeit that right,” he said.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual event founded on the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion. After several years of absence, the event was held by Joliet churches once again in 2015.

Mike Clark, president of the NAACP of Joliet, said the importance of the day is bringing the community together on the foundation of prayer. He said he believes that “leaning on the Lord” is the answer to a lot of things that plague the community.

“When we can come together and you see a room like this with diversity in the audience and on the program, I think we can set the tone going forward into the summer months that we can – through God – fix anything,” Clark said.

JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Transportation will be completing repair work on the Cass Street bridge over the Des Plaines River beginning Monday, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The road will be closed to all traffic and a detour route will be posted.

Drivers are advised to use caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area. Work is expected to be completed by May 22.

Crews to remove trees during weekend in Joliet subdivisions

JOLIET – The city of Joliet’s Roadways Division will be in subdivisions between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday performing tree removals, according to a city news release.

The subdivisions include Cumberland South, Caton Ridge West, Caton Ridge, Pheasant Ridge, Mirage, Clearwater, Bronk Road and Houbolt Road.

Residents are asked to remove vehicles from the street during the listed days and times, and to proceed with caution while workers are present.

The Will County Health Department plans to expand a teen pregnancy program to two more Bolingbrook middle schools.

The program was brought to Bolingbrook at the start of this school year because teen pregnancy rates there are higher than elsewhere in the county, said Cathy Jackson, program manager for the health department.

Jackson gave a progress report on the program Thursday to the Will County Board Public Health and Safety Committee.

“The teen birth rate in Will County is very low,” Jackson said. “But when you look at Bolingbrook, it’s higher than it is in Will County.”

Bolingbrook was the only community in Will County that qualified for the program, which is funded with a grant through the Illinois Department of Human Services.

The program this year was incorporated into health education classes at Bolingbrook High School, The Phoe-

nix Experience alternative school, and Hubert Humphrey Middle School.

Jackson said the program also will be provided during the next school year to Bolingbrook’s two other middle schools – Jane Addams and Brooks.

The program also is aimed at reducing rates of sexually transmitted diseases, Jackson said.

This year, more than 1,100 teens took the class, she said. Next year, it will be close to 1,800. In effect, she said, the program will be available to all Bolingbrook eighth and ninth graders.

Jackson said the health department has taken two other initiatives at its North Branch office in Bolingbrook related to the program.

One was to make condoms available to teens at the office.

“One of the things we kept hearing from teens is, ‘We need condoms.

They’re too expensive,’” she told the committee.

The North Branch office also will begin providing family planning services in June. Jackson said Boling-

Central Grocers laid off 29 workers at the Joliet warehouse April 21, and, according to one source, laid off another 10 on Friday.

The company has been seeking a buyer since December, according to a court declaration from Donald Harer, chief restructuring officer for Central Grocers, filed with the bankruptcy petition.

Central Grocers received several bids for certain assets, including the distribution center, according to Harer’s declaration.

Central Grocers operates as a coop and is owned by member stores.

Tony’s Finer Foods and Berkot’s Super Foods, which have stores in Joliet and Will County, are two of the larger members. Certified Warehouse Foods, which closed its two stores in Joliet in April, also was a member.

Certified owner Ken Clymer said Central Grocers’ inability last year to pay the usual annual rebate to member stores contributed to his business closing.

He now is concerned that the stock that he and other members have in Central Grocers will be worthless.

“I heard they’re going under,” Clymer said, “and it’s not good for any of the members.”

16 Disgraced preacher, child sex abuser Tony Alamo dies

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Tony Alamo, a onetime street preacher whose apocalyptic ministry grew into a multimillion-dollar network of businesses and property before he was convicted in Arkansas of sexually abusing young girls he considered his wives, has died in prison. He was 82.

Once known for designing elaborately decorated jackets for celebrities including Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley, Alamo died Tuesday at a federal prison hospital in Butner, North Carolina, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

The disgraced preacher was convicted in 2009 on charges that he took underage girls across state lines for sex, including a 9-year-old.

The judge who sentenced him to the maximum 175 years in prison told him: “One day you will face a higher and a greater judge than me.

May he have mercy on your soul.”

Alamo started preaching along the California streets in the 1960s, advocating a mixture of virulent anti-Catholicism and apocalyptic rhetoric. He claimed God authorized polygamy, professed that gays were the tools of Satan, and believed girls were fit for marriage even at a young age.

“Consent is puberty,” Alamo told The Associated Press in September 2008, during the same weekend state and federal agents raided the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries in the tiny southwest Arkansas town of Fouke to investigate possible child abuse and pornography.

Witnesses in the ensuing trial said Alamo made all key decisions in the compound: who got married, what children were taught in school, who received clothes, who was allowed to eat. They said he began taking multiple wives in the early 1990s, including a 15-year-old girl in 1994, followed by increasingly younger girls.

Alamo was convicted after five women testified they were “married” to him in secret ceremonies at his compound when they were minors – including one when she was only 8 years old – and later taken to places outside Arkansas for sex.

“There’s no telling how many little girls’ lives he destroyed,” Fouke Mayor Terry Purvis told the AP on Wednesday. “I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes right now.”

Roberta is survived by her sister, Theresa (Brian) Baranski; nephew, Brian (Kristin) Baranski Jr.; niece, Cheryl (Dave Ramirez) Baranski; great-nieces and nephews, Makenna, Carter, Logan, Ethan, Chase, Noah and Olivia; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and best friend, Bea Spights.

Bobbi retired from Joliet Junior College after 35 years of service, working in records and graduation. She received an honorary degree from Joliet Junior College upon her retirement.

Bobbi was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed watching them play. Her favorite saying was “cool beans” which was a common part of her vocabulary.

She was truly loved by all of her family, friends and coworkers and will be missed by all who knew her. Always together WeeWee and CoCo. The family would like to offer a special thank you to all of the medical staff and hospice staff for the care provided to Bobbi throughout her battle. Timothy T. Murphy, 45, of Lockport, passed away unexpectedly on April 17th, 2017.

He was born on August 29th, 1971 in Lockport, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Cunico) Murphy. Tim was a former Mayor of Lockport from 2005 to 2009 and was instrumental in many of the cities current revitalization projects. Tim was also a realtor for many years, and acted as owner and managing broker of a ReMax office in Lockport.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly (Bjorklund) Murphy; and his loving mother, Mary Ann (Cunico) Murphy of Lockport. He is also survived by his four stepchildren, Ivy, Chloe, Anthony and Vincent. His two sisters, Mary C. Carlock and Kathleen Gallagher; his Aunt Peggy and Uncle Sonny Cox; and their four sons; and many more relatives and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas (2010); his brother, Michael (2000), Uncle John Cunico (1960); his grandparents, Anthony & Margaret Cunico and Albert & Kathryn Murphy, both of Lockport.

Rivers at record levels in parts of Midwest

dreds of people have been forced from their homes across the region.

River levels are mostly falling except for a few spots on the Missouri River and Mississippi River, although damage along those big rivers will be minimized by flood buyouts over the past two decades. But people living along smaller rivers – such as the Meramec in suburban St. Louis and the Black River, which cuts through southeast Missouri and northeast Arkansas – are dreading what they’ll find.

Authorities are urging caution: Damaged buildings can pose hazards,

such as electrical shock, while wildlife displaced by flooding – such as snakes, turtles and deer – could be lurking in and around homes. Health officials said floodwater contains raw sewage, chemicals and other potentially toxic items. They said children and pets should be kept out of the water.

In Valley Park, about 20 miles east of Pacific, the Meramec has dropped sharply since cresting just short of an all-time record. The lower part of the town was evacuated Monday amid worries a nearby levee wouldn’t hold.

The soaked levee did hold, and Mayor Michael Pennise said Thursday that residents could return starting at 8 a.m. Friday.

St. Louis-area residents also got good news Thursday when westbound lanes of Interstate 44 reopened after a two-day shutdown. Officials were hopeful water would recede enough for eastbound lanes to open before Friday morning rush hour.

In northeast Arkansas, about 50 homes in Randolph County were destroyed or badly damaged when the Black River reached record levels.

More than 100 National Guard members were dispatched after at least nine breaches were reported along a levee near the town of Pocahontas, where some residents were evacuated.

A mudslide in southwest Illinois badly damaged a home and closed a road in Caseyville, near St. Louis.

And in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Southeast Missouri State University football players joined other volunteers filling sandbags to protect homes outside the floodwall that guards most of the city.

Travel was restricted on and near parts of the Mississippi River, including a 14.5-mile stretch of the river at St. Louis that was closed to barges and other vessels because of high, swift current.

The warmest recorded temperature in April was in Kaskaskia, where it hit 89 degrees April 20. The lowest temperature was 19 degrees, recorded April 10 in Morrison.

If ratified, the agreement will cover 10,000 SEIU members at 103 nursing homes belonging to the Illinois Association of Health Care Facilities.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS – Joseph Fiorilli is ready to go home, even though most everything he left behind when the flooded Meramec River inundated his eastern Missouri home will be a soggy, stinky mess.

Fiorilli, his wife and their two dogs were forced to quickly leave when heavy rains pushed the river to near-record levels, about 18 feet above flood stage in Pacific, about 40 miles west of St. Louis.

Although water levels have dropped, Fiorilli’s home in a fourunit apartment remains underwater.

He expects to find his furniture, TV, laptop and most everything else they left behind ruined.

“Fortunately these are all replaceable things,” the 50-year-old Fiorilli said. Still, he added, “it’s really scary.”

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois saw an average statewide precipitation of slightly more than 7 inches last month, making it the second-wettest April on record.

January through April also was the warmest on record, with an average temperature of 44.5 degrees. That’s 5.4 degrees above normal.

Jim Angel is the state climatologist with the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois. He said April’s statewide average precipitation was 3.23 inches above normal. The largest amount fell in Carbondale, which saw 14.41 inches. Other southern Illinois cities saw similar numbers.

Tentative deal averts strike by nursing home workers

CHICAGO – A tentative contract agreement has averted a strike planned by thousands of Illinois nursing home workers.

More than 5,000 workers at Chicago, Rockford and Springfield facilities planned a Thursday strike. But Service Employees International Union Healthcare Illinois officials said an agreement was reached on a three-year deal late Wednesday.

The union’s chief negotiator Larry Alcoff said the tentative agreement includes wage increases of up to 40 percent and staffing provisions to adjust work requirements. He said the contract also will address concerns over immigrant workers’ rights.

Poshard resigns as leader of Morthland College

WEST FRANKFORT – Former congressman and Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard has resigned as president of a private Christian liberal arts college after just more than two months on the job.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reported Poshard resigned from Morthland College in West Frankfort in an April 26 letter, effective immediately.

Poshard said there were “serious issues – both personnel and financial – of which I was not notified when I began as president.” But school marketing director Leigh Caldwell said Poshard told the college he “resigned for health reasons.” She said the college’s founder Tim Morthland will return as president.

Vietnam War casualty honored with park

BOURBONNAIS – Bourbonnais village officials have dedicated a memorial park for a U.S. Marine who died in the Vietnam War. The village and Olivet Nazarene University dedicated the park to Marine 1st Lt. Wayne Michael Hayes .

Hayes was the first and possibly only Olivet Nazarene student to die in Vietnam.

Hayes was killed July 6, 1967, in a battle defending a South Vietnamese village. The lieutenant had just been put in charge of the five-tank company.

Hayes led a three-tank formation into a firefight with the North Vietnamese. He took the top-of-the-tank mounted gun and was hit by what was a rocket-propelled grenade or anti-tank shell.

Hayes’ spot is called Freedom Garden.

It is just south of the electronic sign that honors all area veterans.

WASHINGTON – The Senate has delivered to President Donald Trump the first significant legislation of his presidency, a bipartisan $1.1 trillion spending bill that would keep the government running through September – putting off, for now, battles over Trump’s U.S.-Mexico border wall and his promised military buildup.

The lopsided, 79-18 Senate vote sends the huge bill to the White House in plenty of time to avert a midnight Friday shutdown deadline.

Negotiators on the bill dropped Trump’s demands for a down payment on his oft-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but his signature would buy five months of funding stability while lawmakers argue over the wall and over Trump’s demands for a huge military buildup matched by cuts to popular domestic programs and foreign aid accounts.

Rumors surround Justice Kennedy exit

WASHINGTON – As one justice settles into his new job at the Supreme Court, is another about to leave? Eighty-year-old Justice Anthony Kennedy is so far refusing to comment on speculation that he might soon retire after 29 years on the court.

But that hasn’t stopped President Donald Trump and,

obliquely, the Republican senator in charge of high court confirmation hearings from weighing in on the prospect that Kennedy could step down as soon as this spring or summer. If not this year, several former law clerks said they would not be surprised to see the justice retire in 2018.

“I’ve heard the same rumors that a lot of people have heard.

And I have a lot of respect for that gentleman, a lot,” Trump told The Washington Times in an interview published Sunday.

Army offers $5K bonus to troops who train others

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The U.S. Army is authorizing $5,000 bonuses to woo top-performing troops into a new training brigade as the service once famous for shouldering the burden of America’s wars works to meet the growing demand for advisers in places ranging from Iraq and Syria to Afghanistan and Africa.

The plan recognizes the new reality of America at war: Army soldiers are more often training and building local security forces rather than doing the fighting for them on foreign soil. It replaces what has been a hodgepodge of programs over the past dozen years with projections for five new, permanent, fully trained brigades that can be deployed around the world as professional advisers.

Trump eases limits on church political activity The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Declaring he was giving churches their “voices back,” President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday aimed at easing an IRS rule limiting political activity for religious organizations – a move that fell far short of a more sweeping order some supporters had expected.

As he marked the National Day of Prayer on Thursday at the White House, Trump signed the order on religious freedom, which directs the Treasury Department to not take “adverse action” over churches or religious organizations for political speech. The rule has rarely been enforced. Still, opponents said the restrictions have a chilling effect on free speech.

“This financial threat against the faith community is over,” Trump said. He has long promised the conservative Christian supporters who helped him win the White House that he would block the regulation, known as the Johnson Amendment, although any repeal would have to be done by Congress.

The amendment, named for then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson, was put into force in 1954. The policy allows a wide range of advocacy on political issues, but in the case of houses of worship, it bars electioneering and outright political endorsements from the pulpit.

The IRS does not make public its investigations of such cases, but only one church is known to have lost its tax-exempt status as a result of the prohibition.

Trump’s order also asks federal agencies to consider issuing new regulations that the White House said could help religious groups that object to paying for contraception under the Affordable Care Act health law. And it

The order did not match a broader, much more detailed draft leaked earlier this year that included provisions on conscience protection for faith-based ministries, schools and federal workers across an array of agencies.

Robin Fretwell Wilson, a legal scholar who advises legislators on balancing LGBT rights and religious liberty, said the language in the document was so vague, it was unclear what effect it would have.

“I’m not seeing a lot more shield around people of faith from this,” said Wilson, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Leaders of some faith groups condemned the order, saying it would damage congregations by politicizing them. But the American Civil Liberties Union announced late Thursday it had dropped its initial plan to file a lawsuit to prevent the order from taking effect, saying “today’s executive order signing was an elaborate photo-op with no discernible policy outcome.”

Trump spoke to religious leaders in the Rose Garden,

where he also announced he’ll visit Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Vatican – including a meeting with Pope Francis – on his first foreign trip. In the audience were members of the Little Sisters of the Poor, who run more than two dozen nursing homes for impoverished seniors, and object to having to pay for birth control in their health plans.

Several religious leaders who supported Trump praised the order as a first step in what would be a lengthy, difficult process of reworking a web of regulations that many religious conservatives consider unfair.

Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, which has advocated for a repeal of the IRS restrictions on political speech, said Trump has started “a multi-phase process” on religious liberty that will “keep the promises the administration has made to people of faith.”

But Michael Farris, chief executive of the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal group that advocates for broad religious liberty protections, said “we strongly encourage” the president to go further.

In normal times, a 40-minute, lateApril meeting to talk about the budget between a governor and the House Speaker would be so routine that it likely would go unnoticed by pretty much everyone under the Statehouse dome.

But these ain’t normal times.

A funded, full-year state budget has not passed during a spring legislative session since 2013, almost exactly four years ago. We’ve had partial-year or “stopgap” budgets ever since.

And House Speaker Michael Madigan hasn’t formally met with the governor since December 6th of last year, about five months ago. Gov. Bruce Rauner announced at the time there would be no more such meetings until the Democrats were prepared to offer up a balanced budget with specific reforms – something that the governor hasn’t done since, either.

So it was definitely news when Speaker Madigan requested a private, one-onone sit-down with Gov. Rauner last week and then the two actually met.

Speaker Madigan issued a statement saying that he had urged the governor “to turn his focus to the budget.” Gov. Rauner’s office then claimed that Madigan “hinted that he may be willing to enact a truly balanced budget with changes that will help create jobs, properly fund our schools and lower property taxes.”

Did they really make progress?

Well, we all know that the governor is prone to exaggeration. He said repeatedly during the two-week spring break that the grand bargain negotiations were close to being wrapped up. He even claimed at one whistle stop that negotiations were going on between the two caucuses as he spoke, with another scheduled for the following day. None of that was true.

The House Speaker has his own issues.

He doesn’t say much except to repeat what he’s been saying over and over for two years: The governor should focus on passing a budget. Madigan himself, meanwhile, has been completely focused on denying the governor any wins on Rauner’s terms. All wins must instead be on Madigan’s terms.

Madigan’s spokesman reacted to the governor’s statement by pointing to a bill the House passed last week to make workers’ compensation insurance “more affordable.” That bill (HB 2622), however, sets up a state-run workers’ comp insurance company to compete with existing private insurers. Trial lawyers and unions insist that the hundreds of workers’ comp insurers in Illinois are colluding to keep prices high. Hey, maybe such a thing could work. But creating a govern-

Even so, I choose, for the millionth time, to look at the bright side. At least they met. At least apparently there was a mention (no matter how brief) of non-budgetary reforms. At least they didn’t full-on whack each other after their meeting ended.

You gotta crawl before you can walk, so I’ll take it, no matter how pathetically tiny or how temporary that microscopic bit of progress might have been.

It’s been Madigan’s habit over the years to send the Senate a budget and then announce that the House has completed its work. He did it again last year and was ultimately stymied when the Senate refused to pass it.

But Madigan likely can’t even pass another budget bill out of his own chamber this year, mainly because a group of ten or so independent Democratic women in his caucus are sick and tired of these impasse games. They have enough votes to block him if they stick together.

And if the Senate ever does send Madigan its grand bargain, those ten House members and several more will demand that he take some action. This impasse is killing them back in their districts, along with the blame that the governor has so successfully pinned on Madigan with tens of millions of dollars. A deal would take an enormous amount of heat off Madigan’s members, and, by extension, him.

Rauner, for his part, is dangerously close to being permanently labeled as a failed governor. Everything he’s tried has failed. Sure, he can point to minor administrative successes, but he wasn’t elected to save a few bucks on data processing.

And constantly awarding himself an “A” grade by pointing to these little administrative successes comes close to making him look dangerously separated from the reality that his state is rapidly going down the drain.

Both men have good reasons to find a way out of this mess. But they’re also the most stubborn men on the planet. Let’s hope they keep talking.

Keep American Dream alive At one time, we all pretty much counted on what we call the American Dream.

You work hard, you get ahead and your children have a shot at doing even better than you did.

That was the way things worked for generations. Especially with immigrant families, where it was not uncommon to see the children of janitors and sweatshop workers become doctors, lawyers and business owners. But the dream wasn’t just about college and professional status. There were plenty of opportunities in the blue-collar sector as well. Factory workers could count on a job for life and see their children work alongside them, maybe even rise into management. But things have changed.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released a report examining the economic lives of so-called “millennials,” who range in age from 18 to 34.

A third are living with their parents. More than 40 percent have student debt. Fewer than one-third are financially

independent of their parents by age 21. Many college graduates cannot find a job in their field.

Many high school grads cannot find a job outside the low-wage service sector.

The millennials still believe education is key to success and they want financial stability.

For about half of them, the dream is working. For the other half, it’s still just a dream.

So what can be done?

The most important thing is creating not just jobs – we have plenty of minimum-wage positions out there – but higher-paying jobs. Professional and manufacturing jobs.

The kind that help you move up, move out and build a life.

Opportunity.

That was one of the cornerstones of President Donald’s Trump’s campaign. It’s a promise we hope he keeps. It’s a promise we hope lawmakers, by putting aside their partisan bickering, can embrace and help him keep.

Lockport wins the sectional; Ruettiger earns fourth state trip

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – Thursday’s Lincoln-Way West Badminton Sectional was the case of the old guard and a historic first.

Lockport won the team title with 13.5 points, followed by the host Warriors with 11 points. Lincoln-Way Central (7.5) was third, Plainfield South (7) took fourth, and Plainfield East (1.5) finished sixth.

Lockport’s first-year coach Stacy Sparlin was pleased with the performance of the Porters, who won their fifth-straight sectional title.

“It’s very hard to follow in the footsteps of a legend,” said Sparlin, who took over for Denise Hadley. “I’m learning every day, and I have to give so much credit to my staff. They are fantastic to have, and the knowledge is incredible. It’s funny, because the combinations of players that we have today are so different than when we started the season. They bought in and continued the Porter tradition.”

The top four single players and doubles teams qualified for the state finals, which start May 12 at Eastern Illinois University.

Lincoln-Way West’s Cassie Ruettiger won the individual title for the second consecutive year and qualified for the fourth time. She beat Lockport’s Jenna Franzen, 21-12, 21-6. Ruettiger won all three matches in straight sets.

“This is definitely an emotional time knowing that I’m a senior,” Ruettiger said. “In the finals match I was relaxed and just played badminton.

Also qualifying in singles were Lincoln-Way Central’s Jalyn Baumgartner, who took third, and the Warriors’ Peyton Nielson, who finished fourth.

Baumgartner also advanced last year.

The Porters’ duo of Alexis Duda and Mary O’Brien beat South’s combo of Melissa Powers and Sarah Lucchesi, 21-13, 21-16, for the doubles title.

JOLIET – The St. Francis baseball team used a five-run first inning to defeat neighborhood rival Lewis, 9-2, and give USF coach Brian Michalak his 200th coaching victory Wednesday at Slammers Stadium. The five runs in the first inning were the most in the opening frame since April 18.

Dan Darling sparked two big innings for St. Francis (30-24). His first-inning double was the first of three for the Saints that inning, and he added an RBI single in the fifth to start another three-run rally. Williams among Providence athletes choosing schools

dgoss@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – If Providence Catholic baseball coach Mark Smith could take back his words, he would.

“My best friend brought up how many different lineups we’ve been using,” Smith said during Providence’s college signing/commitment recognition event Wednesday in the school gym. “I told him we have only two positions set, center field and catcher.

“Right after that, my center fielder [Gaosh Williams] breaks his hand, and five days later, my catcher breaks his hand. Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.”

It has been an injury-hampered spring for the threetime defending Class 4A state champion Celtics, who lost four of the five members of their starting rotation to injury before the season began.

Kurt Dankovich, who suffered a slightly torn ligament at a January showcase, was scheduled to make his season debut Thursday – 20 pitches or one inning, whichever came first – and will ease back into the mix. The others are not expected back.

With his hand in a cast but sporting his ever-present

smile, Williams was among the Celtics cited Wednesday.

He will continue his baseball career at NCAA Division I Central Michigan. Williams was introduced to Providence athletics when he played football in the fall.

He transferred in from Norman, Oklahoma, last summer as his mom was hired for a job at Joliet Junior College.

He committed to the Central Michigan baseball program in late February.

“I’ve had a lot of fun playing here,” Williams said.

“Coach Smith let me play how

I play. He wanted me to be a leader.”

“I would say Gaosh has been the heart and soul of our team,” Smith said. “He was our leadoff guy and was hitting around .355 or .360. He stole 22 bases in 17 games. He was the catalyst of our offense and phenomenal defensively.

He is the fastest kid I have ever coached. He gets on base, and you feel like it’s going to be a triple.

“He was just beginning to tap into his potential. I just wish I had him another year.

I hope we get him back by the regionals. We’ll have to see how fast he heals.”

Mark Coglianese is Providence’s football and boys track coach. Imagine what Williams could have done for the track team.

“My girlfriend runs track here,” Williams said. “I was at a meet and Coach Cogs asked me if I wanted to run a race.

But I thought I better not or Coach Smith would be mad.”

While Williams’ best baseball may be ahead of him at Central Michigan and beyond, Celtics boys basketball coach Tim Trendel said the college choices Schutter and Drew made are perfect fits for their futures.

“Our kids through the years have tended to find the right fits, and Jake and Michael have, too,” he said.

“They’re smart kids. They are going to programs that have good defensive systems. Mike will be a point forward and Jake will be a 2-guard, which is a more natural position for him [he played the point more often than not at Providence].

“Both of them have some good basketball ahead of them.”

Tyrell, Joliet Catholic beat Marian Catholic, take ESCC lead

It may be by only percentage points, but Joliet Catholic Academy is atop the ESCC after its 1-0 victory Thursday over Marian Catholic at Gillespie Field. JCA (13-10-1, 8-1) will visit Marian (15-6, 9-2) at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Game 2 of the series.

On a frigid, windy afternoon, junior lefty Aidan Tyrell pitched and hit the Hilltoppers to victory. Having pitched 51/3 innings Saturday against Notre Dame, Tyrell was limited to 90 pitches with the IHSA pitch-count rule in effect.

Tyrell (2-1) fired five shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. In the JCA third, Tyrell

drove home the only run with a twoout RBI single, scoring freshman Christian Knapczyk. Knapczyk led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second base before Tyrell knocked him in.

“It felt really great to get the big RBI hit,” Tyrell said. “I wanted to hit the ball hard, and fortunately, I barreled up on the ball and got it through.

“It was a cold, windy day so I really attacked their hitters. My defense was solid behind me. Marian Catholic is a great team and hopefully we can go over there and get another win.”

After Tyrell threw 84 pitches through five innings, Hilltoppers coach Jared Voss summoned senior righthander Brendon Wills to replace Tyrell.

After retiring the first two hitters in the sixth, Wills walked Marian Catholic’s Missouri-bound designated

hitter Mark DiLula. Kyle Anderson ran for DiLula and went to second on a wild pitch. Marian right fielder Wyell Woods ripped a single to center field that could have tied the game.

However, Hilltoppers sophomore center fielder Greg Ziegler fielded Woods’ shot and fired a strike to Hilltopper catcher Simon Grashoff, who put the tag on Anderson for the third out to preserve the 1-0 lead.

“I wanted to make sure I fielded the ball cleanly and then knew I had to make the strong throw to Simon [Grashoff], who put the tag on the runner,” Ziegler said. “This was a big win and we have another big game tomorrow.”

In the seventh, Wills allowed a oneout runner who reached on an error.

But Wills retired the final two hitters to nail down the save.

“It was a good day to pitch and I

was able to keep it on the ground and get outs,” Wills said. “Greg [Ziegler] has been doing that for us all year. He made a great throw to save the game.”

“Greg Ziegler is a young kid who hasn’t hit as well as he would like but doesn’t take his at-bats out to center field,” Voss said. “He made a heck of a throw, and Simon put a nice tag on their kid to preserve the lead. That’s the reason Greg is out there. He makes plays like that.”

“Aidan pitched well for us and got the clutch two-out RBI to win the game and Brendon Wills is a very good pitcher, and did the job today. First place in the conference is nice, but we have to continue to play well and get another one from them tomorrow. It’s been a long climb back for us, but if we continue to play well, everything will take of itself.”

As for being in these kinds of situations, Almora doesn’t mind a bit.

“If I’m on base, it means I did something well,” he said. “I just want to help.

In that situation, I wanted to get to second base. When (Szczur) hit the groundball, you have it in the back of your head, ‘What if something happens?’

Szczur’s a great runner. He could beat it out. If the first baseman’s not paying

attention, I could score. It was in the back of my head. Luckily, he threw it away. I always try to think ahead of time what’s going on. It’s the same way in the outfield.”

Manager Joe Maddon is aware of Almora’s alertness.

“Albert’s been doing that kind of stuff,” Maddon said. “That’s the kind of stuff we like to do on a nightly basis. He seems to be in the middle of it a lot, with

Holland dominates on mound again in 3rd win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – MLB Network was on the visitors clubhouse TV at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday morning before the White Sox played the Royals, and none of the players sitting nearby seemed interested.

That is, until the question, ‘Who is the biggest surprise in the AL Central?’ perked up a few interested viewers.

Heads turned when the Sox, and their bullpen in particular, were mentioned first.

Whoa, national attention.

Derek Holland yelled something to the effect of, “That’s right!”

Holland then went out and held the Royals to one earned run over 62/3 innings to improve to 3-2 with a 2.02 ERA, and Jose Abreu and Matt Davidson each crushed a home run in the first two innings to provide an early cushion, and

the Sox (15-12) breezed to an 8-3 victory to give them a split of a four-game series.

On a day when Nate Jones became the fifth Sox pitcher to go on the disabled list, Holland and the Sox bullpen had their way with the struggling Royals lineup. Anthony Swarzak (0.00 ERA) has retired 30 of the last 31 batters he’s faced, and Tommy Kahnle lowered his ERA to 0.90 with a scoreless ninth.

That caliber of pitching, along with a few other ingredients, such as Avisail Garcia’s hot bat – he drove in two runs with a single to right to raise his club RBI lead to 23 – have concocted enough mojo to have the Sox playing winning baseball. While the threat of proven veterans such as Holland, Miguel Gonzalez, Todd Frazier, closer David Robertson and perhaps Jose Quintana getting traded in the coming months hangs over them, the Sox are trying to ignore it, believing they can win.

Not that anyone else is convinced, including a general manager who remains committed to his rebuilding plan for sustained success.

“It’s great we’ve started the way we have,” Holland said. “That’s more for us, our enjoyment. We already believe we can do this. We know we’re good. We have to get everyone else on the outside to believe this. Everyone is shocked, the White Sox are in first place.”

At 15-12, they are indeed tied with the Indians. On May 4, it might be more winsome than substantial, but it means enough. Just not enough for GM Rick Hahn to abruptly veer away from his rebuilding plan.

“Our focus isn’t going to change in terms of putting ourselves in the best longterm position for this club,” Hahn said Thursday.

“The team is playing really well right now and … as enthusiastic as we are about the wins and losses and the re-

sults on the field, the process and the environment that [manager] Ricky [Renteria] and his coaches have created, that’s the kind of thing we want to put in place and have in place for a number of years.

“And they’ve been extremely effective in putting that into place now, and as a result, it’s leading to perhaps more wins than some people might have projected for this club, at least those outside of the coaching staff and the players in the clubhouse.”

Holland, wearing the WWE belt given to the Sox player of the game – usually decided by Melky Cabrera –wore it proudly. He struck out seven and got swings and misses on 13 of his 91 pitches.

The Sox aren’t bad, he insisted.

“I try to tell people we have a lot of power in this lineup,” Holland said.

“We have a good team here with the chemistry and everything. It’s turning out to be what we want it to be.”

CHICAGO – If there’s a big baserunning play to be made, the Cubs want Albert Almora Jr. to be in the middle of it.

He seems pretty adept at it, going back to, oh, Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, when he tagged from first base on a flyout and went to second. He’d later score on a clutch double by Ben Zobrist.

The heady 23-year-old was at it again Thursday in a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.

Almora led off the bottom of the 13th inning by legging out a double down the left field line. After Javier Baez grounded out to pitcher Joely Rodriguez, the Phillies intentionally walked Zobrist.

Matt Szczur grounded to second baseman Cesar Hernandez, who got the forceout at second.

However, shortstop Freddy Galvis threw the ball away at first, and Almora chugged all the way home with the winning run.

The victory was the Cubs’ third in a row, and it improved their record to 16-12.

It all started with Almora reading the ball to left for the double.

“You can tell as a hitter when you have a chance to get to second base,” he said. “I knew it was going to be close. I

all of these baserunning maneuvers and aggressiveness. Here’s a guy without the greatest speed in the world. I’ve talked about that. But he’s a good base runner, he’s a good outfielder. He runs good routes. All that stuff is pertinent.”

In this back-and-forth game, the Cubs jumped ahead with single runs in the first and second against Phillies starting pitcher Zach Eflin. Cubs starter John Lackey worked five innings, giving up nine hits and three runs. The Phillies went ahead, 4-3, in the top of the eighth.

Miguel Montero tied the game at 4 with a solo homer to center in the bottom of the inning. The ball landed in the basket below the bleachers.

“As soon as I hit it, I saw the center fielder kind of looking at the ball, like he was under the ball,” Montero said.

“I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. He’s going to catch it.’ The next thing I know, the ball is in the basket. Basket. Amazing basket – when I hit. But when I’m catching, I hate it.”

As for the comeback, the Cubs pointed to their World Series rings.

“We never quit,” Almora said. “It’s on the World Series ring. And it really comes home. It really makes a lot of sense, and it’s organization. We never quit until the last out. We’re in that ballgame no matter what.”

Horticulture programs for people with disabilities offer many advantages

NEW LENOX – Gardeners, beginning and experienced, purchase plants and help people with disabilities.

Trinity Services’ horticulture program’s spring sale opens May 5. In addition, the Lincoln-Way Transition Program will host its flower and vegetable sale on May 6 and May 13.

A spring plant sale May 6, May 13 and May 20 will benefit the House of Blooms program at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort.

The Trinity program benefits people of all ages with developmental disabilities and mental illness whom Trinity serves.

Proceeds from the flower and vegetable sale benefit the needs of students in the district’s transition program, while proceeds from the spring plant sale benefit Lincoln-Way East students in the House of Blooms program, which is run through special services, said Taryn Atwell, community relations director at Lincoln-Way District 210.

Norma Akdemir, associate director of the Trinity adult learning day program, said Trinity’s horticulture program began in the 1990s and hosts four sales each year. These include, in addition to the spring sale, sales at Christmas (featuring poinsettias and little trees), Easter (featuring lilies) and fall (featuring chrysanthemums, pumpkins and floral decor).

Of the 60 people in the day program, about 13 participate in the horticulture program, Akdemir said. Pam Van Hess, also an associate director of the day program, said the horticulture program is designed to accommodate any person with any disability.

For instance, raised beds make gardening easier for people in wheelchairs.

Mary T. Harrison, director of special services at Lincoln-Way School District 210, said this is the second year the district has offered horticulture through the transition program, which is used as a vocational tool to teach students skills.

Of the 55 students in the transition program, 20 are involved in the greenhouse project. It’s very hands-on for the students, from the initial planting to working the sale, Harrison said.

In addition to gaining horticulture skills, the students also learn to follow direction and work as a team, Harrison said.

“Working on something from start to finish gives them a sense of accomplishment,” Harrison said.

House of Blooms offers similar benefits, Atwell said.

Like Trinity, the students at Lincoln-Way turn out quality products.

Harrison mentioned the poinsettias leftover from the Christmas sale as an example.

“They still have leaves on them,” Harrison said. “That’s pretty good for poinsettias.”

Rubino’s STEM book gets recognition ‘Emmet’s Storm’ receives Best STEM Books designation

SHOREWOOD – Retired teacher Ann Rubino knows good stories foster great learning.

So in retirement, Rubino began writing and self-publishing children’s books that teachers could use in their classrooms. Rubino was thrilled to learn her third book, “Emmet’s Storm,” received a Best STEM Books designation from national teachers’ organizations.

“It felt good to see my book listed with books by Harper Collins and other publishers,” Rubino said.

According to a news release from the National Science Teachers Association, Best STEM Books is a joint project of the American Society for Engineering Education, the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, the National Science Teachers Association, the Society of Elementary Presidential Awardees and the Children’s Book Council.

The list Best STEM Books gives educators, librarians, parents and caregivers information about the best trade books with STEM content, the news release also stated.

“They’re trying to bring the reading and the science and the technology together in the classroom instead of having them isolated,” Rubino said.

Rubino said “Emmet’s Storm” takes place during the Great Blizzard of 1888.

Emmet, a student at the country school, loves performing science experiments, but no one takes him seriously.

But Emmet notices details during the blizzard that others don’t – the stove’s flame color and its possible connection to people’s headaches and dizziness.

Rubino said her grandmother taught in a one-room schoolhouse during that blizzard, which inspired the story’s

Before Rubino retired in 2011, she was an adjunct teacher at Lewis

University in Romeoville, where she trained future teachers in methods of science teaching. In her retirement, Rubino has reviewed many children’s books for the “recommends” division of Science & Children.

Rubino also has published two other books, both about an Italian 10-year-old boy growing up during World War II: “Peppino, as Good as Bread” and “Peppino and the Streets of Gold.” She is currently working on her fourth book.

Nevertheless, Rubino struggles writing fiction.

“I’m a nonfiction person by nature, very meat and potatoes,” Rubino said.

“To make [a factual event] into a story that’s credible as a story was a big learning curve. I read up a lot and went to many meetings and conferences.”

Rubino decided to self-publish when traditional houses wanted guarantees of sales in the thousands.

“It’s crazy. I’m 77. Give me a break,” Rubino said. “I couldn’t sell a thousand copies if I stood out on I-55.”

More people have read “Emmet’s Storm” since she received the Best STEM Book recognition, Rubino said, a boost for Rubino, who said marketing self-published fiction is difficult.

“It’s hard to get them in the stores,” Rubino said. “The stores don’t want to take a chance because they don’t know you.”

BOLINGBROOK – A film created in a Brooks Middle School sixth-grade art class is drawing international attention after it was declared a first-prize winner in Cabramatta, Australia’s Sunshine Short Film Festival.

Last year, Brooks Visual Arts Key Leader Charlie McDermott asked his students to partner on a stop motion video project.

Sofia Santiago, who hopes to be an animator someday, and Taylor Cobb, who has designs on becoming either a chef or an undercover narcotics agent, came up with an ingenious project that utilized both stop motion and forced perspective photography.

They called it “I (Heart) Art.” Their classmates voted to produce their film, in which they spent three class periods last year taking still shots with a tiny point-and-shoot camera.

McDermott helped edit the still shots into one cohesive film and showed it to students and a few staff members. But at the time, he had no idea it was good enough to be an international film festival winner.

Last fall, Brooks Principal Keith Wood alerted McDermott to a call for entries in the Cabramatta Film Festival, sponsored

by Cabramatta School in New South Wales, which is a southwest suburb of Sydney, Australia. So McDermott entered the Cobb/Santiago film. Watch the film at http://shawurl.com/32g7.

New Lenox recreation supervisor earns national certification

NEW LENOX – Jason Braglia, recreation supervisor at the New Lenox Community Park District, recently was certified as a parks and recreation professional (CPRP) by the National Certification Board and the National Recreation and Park Association.

The CPRP certification is granted to individuals employed in the recreation, park resource and leisure services professions who meet the eligibility requirements – including a combination of higher education and/or work experience – and who

successfully complete the national CPRP examination.

Braglia began his career as a volunteer with the New Lenox Community Park District and has held various positions since 1999. He began his career as a fieldhouse assistant, went on to become a program coordina- Jason Braglia tor and most recently was promoted to recreation supervisor.

ROMEOVILLE – Several Romeoville High School students earned honors at the Southwest Prairie Conference Art Competition.

Maya Manzano finished first in printmaking. Second-place finishes were registered

by Mely Meraz in 2-D neutral and Vicky Zuchara in wheel-thrown ceramics. Lizet Audelo-Luna was third in mixed media.

Meraz also was awarded the Emerging Artist Scholarship from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at the IHSAE General Exhibition Show.

Risk of developing meningitis low Dear Doctor: One of the schools in my area has been the focus of news reports about a bacterial meningitis case. How contagious is this disease?

Dear Reader: Bacterial meningitis cases in school-age children, adolescents and college students are predominately caused by two different organisms: Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis.

Streptococcus causes nearly 50 percent of meningitis between the ages of 2 and 18, while people in their teens and college years face an increased risk of meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis. In fact, 46 percent of meningitis cases between ages 11 to 17 are due to N. meningitidis.

The Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium is spread by close contact with people who cough or sneeze. Upon inhalation, the bacteria adhere to the back of the nasal passage in an area called the nasopharynx.

Normally, there the bacteria sit, colonizing the nasopharynx without causing any problems. A study of 2,799 Italian children younger than 7 years of age found that 8.6 percent had S. pneumoniae colonizing the nasopharynx; the biggest risk factor for colonization was a sinus infection over the previous three months.

In most people with this colonization, the immune system keeps the bacteria from invading the cells of the body. However, when the immune system is weakened or when the body is fighting a viral infection, such as influenza, the bacteria can then invade the cells. From there, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cross through the blood-brain barrier, replicating readily in the cerebrospinal fluid, leading to the symptoms of meningitis.

Like Streptococcus, Neisseria also settles in the nasopharynx, where the immune system similarly keeps the bacteria from invading into the cells of the body. People can carry the bacteria for several months within their nasopharynx and unwittingly pass it on to others.

In fact, 5 to 10 percent of people in the United States carry this bacteria in the nasopharynx. Military recruits in closed quarters can have carrier rates up to 40 percent. College students in dormitory situations have carrier rates of 14 to 34 percent.

If one person develops meningitis from N. meningitidis, other people with whom they are in close contact are at greater risk.

Again, the bacteria that cause meningitis are quite contagious, but a person’s general risk of developing the illness is very low. In addition, children and adolescents are vaccinated for three types of bacteria that can lead to meningitis: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis and Haemophilus influenzae type b. These vaccinations significantly have decreased the rates of meningitis, so make sure your child gets these vaccinations.

Lastly, if your child has been exposed to somebody with meningitis, watch for fever, neck stiffness and lethargy. If he or she begins to exhibit these symptoms, all potential signs of meningitis infection, take him or her to a doctor as soon as possible.

Many years ago, I was asked this question: What is the one thing you teach your students that they never seem to get and you cannot understand why? My answer is the theme of this column.

South is in four spades. West guesses well to lead the club two.

How should the defenders card to defeat the contract?

Over West’s takeout double, North applied the main conclusion from the Law of Total Tricks, jumping to four spades because he knew of a 10-card fit.

West might have led the spade ace, planning to exit with a diamond in the hope that his four honor cards would all win tricks. Here, though, that would not have worked.

When West leads a low club, which card should East contribute?

East is playing third hand high; his card might even win the trick. In this situation, East must play the bottom of his touching cards: the jack.

When South takes the trick with the ace, West knows his partner has the club queen. So, when South next plays a trump, West can win and continue with a second low club to give his partner the lead. Then, with luck, East will shift to the heart nine (the high card denying an honor in the suit), and West will take two tricks in that suit to defeat the contract.

East should not lead to a diamond, because if West has a winner there, it isn’t going to disappear. But a heart trick might -- and will -- evaporate.

Finally, if declarer ducks the first trick, East should immediately switch to the heart nine. West’s lead marks South with the club ace, so returning that suit would be a waste of time.
