City council puts prison plan on hold

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet is not taking a chance on the Collins Street prison – at least not at the odds being given by the state of Illinois.

The City Council on Tuesday did not say no but voted to table a proposal to take joint ownership of the prison while staff tries to persuade the state to give access to the prison property so its condition can be assessed.

Joliet for years has looked at the potential of converting the famous Joliet Correctional Center into some sort of tourism use. The state closed the prison in 2002, and it has been deteriorating without any maintenance since.

City Manager Jim Hock and Greg Peerbolte, director of the Joliet Area Historical Museum, pitched a proposal to the council to pursue joint ownership of the prison between the city and the museum.

“When you meet someone from just

Council members expressed interest in the idea but wariness of what they might get into without being able to evaluate the potential costs of ownership.

“I think the project’s exciting,” Councilman Michael Turk said.

Then he added, “So, the state won’t let us in, but they’ll let us assume the whole institution as is?”

“For $10,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said, quoting an oft-repeated price at which the state would be willing to let go of the prison.

Councilman Terry Morris at one point expressed the absurdity of the situation in which the city, which is interested in ownership, can’t get access to a property that has become notorious for trespassers.

“I don’t want this to sound stupid,” Morris said. “If people can break in, what do we need to do to get in and assess it?”

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said he would attempt to get a formal response from the Department of Corrections on a formal request to get access to the site.

GLBT proposal includes Illiana replacement

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Great Lakes Basin Transportation Inc. filed its application Monday with the Surface Transportation Board to build the Great Lakes Basin Railroad.

The Great Lakes Basin Railroad project, which has an estimated $8 billion price tag, would run 275 miles from La Porte, Indiana, to Milton, Wisconsin, cutting through Grundy and LaSalle counties locally. The railroad previously was the subject of highly contentious environmental impact meetings.

Great Lakes Basin Transportation is now also proposing the construction of a toll road that will divert traffic around Chicago. The proposed privately funded toll road, which would be called the Daniel Burnham Expressway, would run from Interstate 80 west of Morris to Indiana, where it would again meet with the Interstate 80/94 expressway.

The toll road would follow much of the same route as the proposed railroad, which has not been changed since it was shown at open meetings in and around Grundy County. Together, the toll road

But he outlined increasingly hazardous conditions at the prison that even threaten the safety of firefighters who go in on occasions when trespassers set fires.

Peerbolte said the Joliet prison has international recognition, and visitors to the museum frequently seek a chance to tour the Collins Street site.

“We have the international recognition that goes back to 1914 in the film industry,” Peerbolte said as he showed a list of movies and TV programs over the years that have featured the Joliet prison in the plots.

“I hear, ‘We don’t want that prison reputation,’” Peerbolte said. “I argue, own it.

You already have it. Own it. Monetize it.”

He provided information about revenues gained from prison tours and events at Alcatraz prison in San Francisco and Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia

and railroad would have a combined width in some areas of more than 2,000 feet.

“By creating the Burnham corridor along the same route as the train, we will be carving out one area not two,” Frank Patton, Great Lakes Basin Transportation founder and chairman, stated in a news release. “There would be 18 connections for the proposed expressway, allowing for potential economic development across its path, with access to both the expressway and the railroad track.

“Our application explains the need for this vital project to the STB and the public,” Patton said in a phone interview. “The GLBR is the largest single freight railroad project proposed for the Chicago region in over a century. We look forward to working with the STB and other interested parties to move this project forward.”

The Surface Transportation Board will announce the procedural schedule for the application and related environmental review in future orders.

time to complete its application to the board to seek construction and operation authority for the new rail line, according to a letter to Patton from the board.

Great Lakes Basin Transportation officials made the request Dec. 1, arguing that the application would provide the Surface Transportation Board’s Office of Environmental Analysis assistance with its environmental policy act review.

Patton said the Daniel Burnham Expressway would replace the proposed Illiana toll road and make more sense in the way it diverts traffic.

Both the toll road and the railroad would be built with private funds, Patton said, and would not cost the taxpayers money.

Patton said now that the Surface Transportation Board is in the process of designing the railroad, Great Lakes Basin Transportation expects a set list of potential routes published by the board in one to two weeks.

“We hope in 60 days to have a schedule for public meetings for the proposed highway, which falls under the jurisdiction of a different federal agency than the Surface Transportation Board,” Patton said.

City manager retires Wednesday after 3 years in Joliet

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City Manager Jim Hock had some firsts in Joliet.

Hock is wrapping up a 39-year career in government with a retirement that starts after his last day as city manager Wednesday.

Asked whether he ever had an experience like the Rialto Square Theatre, which required Hock to get some quick lessons in the theater business a year ago as the city stepped in to save a few acts when the Rialto ran out of money, the city manager shook his head several times.

“No – not with a theater,” Hock said.

“And this is my first baseball stadium, too. And my first prison. It’s the only prison people want to break into.”

Among Hock’s last recommendations as city manager is a proposal that the city take joint ownership of the old Collins Street prison with the Joliet

Area Historical Museum.

“Everybody already thinks we own the prison,” Hock said, noting the city gets blamed, although the prison is owned by the state, for such incidents as when a girl got in and locked herself in a prison cell.

Still, it’s those firsts in his career and the variety that comes with managing city government in Joliet that has made his three years in the city rewarding, Hock said during an interview at his office last week.

“It’s a city manager’s dream,” Hock said. “You’ve got new residential construction going in. You’ve got huge industrial development. You’ve got a downtown area that’s an old city center where redevelopment is going on.”

In other words, a lot is happening in Joliet.

Joliet is the biggest city Hock has ever worked for, although he was assistant city manager in Sterling Heights, Michigan, a Detroit suburb with nearly

130,000 people.

Hock is from Michigan, which is where he and his wife will return to live in a lakeside home they own. Hock described it as a “home base” they will use with plans to travel and host visits from family when they’re at the house.

His time in Joliet has included some of the busiest years in his career.

A proclamation read in his honor at the Tuesday City Council meeting recognized Hock’s work in the continued development of CenterPoint Intermodal Center, the new train station under construction, and downtown redevelopment planning that included a redesign of Chicago Street.

Despite all the projects in the works, when Hock talks about accomplishments in Joliet, he tends to mention such things as the creation of a strategic plan tied to city budgets so goals would not be developed without price tags. He also talked about the formation of a staff development team to

streamline the process for developers who come to City Hall.

His retirement announcement just a month before his departure raised some eyebrows, but Hock said he did not want the city manager’s job to become an issue in the City Council election April 4, so he chose to wait until after the election.

Asked why he decided to leave Wednesday rather than later to allow more time to find his replacement, Hock had a pretty simple answer: “To enjoy the summer.”

Hock thinks he has helped the city run more smoothly.

Smoothly enough that he feels he can get away and leave Joliet in the capable hands of department heads until a new city manager is chosen.

“I came to realize that too much is going on here to say, ‘When this project is done, then I can retire,’ ” Hock said.

“There’s always things going on, and there always will be.”

Appeal continues for man convicted in slaying Curl pled guilty to 2010 murder of NIU student

SYCAMORE – A judge ruled Monday that the post-conviction appeal process can continue for a 40-year-old man seeking to take back his guilty plea in the 2010 murder of a Northern Illinois University student from Plainfield.

William Curl said he was coerced into pleading guilty to killing Antinette “Toni” Keller by DeKalb County prosecutors, whom he said threatened to charge his teenage son in connection

with the crime. He also said he received bad representation from his court-appointed attorney at the time. Curl, formerly of DeKalb, is serving a 37-year sentence at Menard Correctional William Curl Center.

In August 2015, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert ruled that Curl could proceed with his claim. With the state having had the opportunity to respond, Curl had to meet more stringent legal standards, which Stuckert ruled that, in part, he had.

“I find that he made a substantial showing of a constitutional violation, warranting a further factual inquiry in an evidentiary hearing,” Stuckert said Monday in court.

In the post-conviction relief petition, Curl and his court-appointed attorney,

Dan Transier, claim his defense should have sought to suppress Curl’s statements to police, that he was under the influence of the hallucinogen salvia during his first Antinette interview with them, “Toni” Keller and that he was never advised of his Miranda rights. Curl also said he wasn’t taking medication needed to regulate his mental state when he spoke to police.

Prosecutors said that despite Curl’s complaints, he had not presented any plausible defense. However, Stuckert disagreed.

“Based on the court’s review of the court record, defendant/petitioner has articulated a plausible defense, the inadmissibility of his statements made to law enforcement, in both his pro se and supplemental pleadings,” Stuckert stat-

ed in the court order.

Stuckert on Monday set the next court date in the case for May 23, at which point a date for the evidentiary hearing will be set.

“I want all of you to have an opportunity to review the 11-page order,” Stuckert said to First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein and Transier. “I know there will be significant witnesses who will be required to be called, based on the court’s review and ruling.”

Keller, an NIU student from Plainfield, was last seen Oct. 14, 2010, when she told friends she was going for a walk in Prairie Park. Her burned body was found in the park two days later.

“Right now, my heart is with the Keller family,” Klein said.

Stuckert’s ruling on Curl’s petition could come as soon as after the hearing.

If his guilty verdict is vacated, the case likely would go to trial.

Coal City man accepts plea for unauthorized videotaping

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Derrick Pink, 38, of Coal City, will be serving concurrent terms after accepting a plea agreement for an eight-year sentence for unauthorized videotaping and six years for criminal damage to state-supported property, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said.

Pink was arrested in May 2015 by

the Coal City Police Department after a cellphone containing videos and pictures of a sex act was handed over to the authorities by a family member.

The original charges Derek Pink were criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Joliet police: Dangerous driver on Jefferson Street had marijuana in car

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An erratic driver allegedly had baggies of marijuana in his car when he was stopped by police Monday.

At 10:18 p.m., officers were on patrol in the 900 block of Jefferson Street when they saw a red Kia pull out from a gas station and Leandre head west “at a high T. Abbott rate of speed,” Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“The driver appeared to be intoxicated – crossing over the center line into oncoming traffic at least 3 feet,” Gregory said.

Police stopped the Kia at Larkin Avenue and could smell marijuana when they approached, Gregory said.

“They got the driver out and in the center console was a sunglasses case that contained nine baggies of marijuana,” Gregory said.

Leandre T. Abbott, 25, of the 1200 block of Cutter Avenue in Joliet, was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana and several traffic violations and booked into the Will County Jail.

According to jail records, Abbott was arrested by Joliet police in October for charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm. He was previously arrested on a residential burglary charge in 2011 and drug possession in 2013.

than a year before bringing the charges, Public Information Officer Tom Logan said at the time. Police received information from a cellphone that contained video and photos of Pink allegedly having intercourse with a juvenile, he said.

On April 28, Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson accepted the plea agreement. The unauthorized videotaping charge is not one of the crimes listed under the Illinois Sex Offender Registry that requires an offender to register as a

sex offender.

As part of the plea agreement, eight other sex-related felonies were dropped and Pink was given credit for serving 717 days for time served in the Grundy County Jail, Helland said, as well as no fine and a $357 court fee.

The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office said the victim had stopped cooperating with authorities after moving to Texas in January 2016 and could no longer be reached.

Joliet police interrupt drug buy at White Castle

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An 18-year-old Plainfield woman was arrested Monday after police interrupted a suspected drug deal.

At 10:27 p.m., police were called to White Castle, 2231 Route 59, after employees reported a “suspicious vehicle” circling the parking lot, Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“When officers got there, they found another vehicle had pulled up next to that vehicle,” Gregory said.

The vehicle that had just arrived was driven by a 19-year-old man. The other car was driven by a 20-year-old man and had Kaylee C. Browder in the passenger seat and an 18-year-old man in the backseat.

“The officers smelled marijuana and had everyone get out of the cars,”

Browder reportedly admitted coming to the parking lot to sell marijuana. Inside the car, police found marijuana in her purse on the passenger seat, marijuana and money in a large mason jar, and a small black scale, according to Gregory.

Browder, of the 2100 block of Wesmere Lakes Drive, was arrested on a charge of delivery of marijuana and released on bond. The men with her were released without being charged.

6 Will County board member proposes shared office building at site

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The chairman of the Will County capital improvements committee pitched the idea of an office building in downtown Joliet that would consolidate several county departments under one roof.

The building could replace the current Will County Courthouse. County officials are pondering what to do with the building as the construction of a new courthouse is slated to begin in 2018.

County board member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, who chairs the com-

mittee, gave some figures Tuesday on the demolition and renovation costs for the current courthouse based on research from Wight & Co., the architect of the new courthouse.

Repurposing and renovating the courthouse would cost about $42.8 million and demolishing it would be about $1.2 million, Tuminello said.

The cost of repurposing and renovating struck Tuminello as a “bit out of touch” and he favored the idea of demolishing the existing courthouse and rebuilding the structure as a county consolidated “campus-style” office building that would be in downtown Joliet and

close to public transportation. “[It would be] not only able to house potentially our health department. …

But our clerk, the treasurer, the executive, land use, probation, the public defender, specialty courts – all under pretty much one roof right downtown,” Tuminello said.

The challenge with renovating the courthouse is that it’s not a pure office building and the basement is not functional, said Jason Dwyer, Wight & Co. vice president and senior project executive.

“The shape of it is challenging,” he said.

Nick Palmer, county executive chief of staff, said it may be helpful to revisit past discussions about consolidating county services in one location. He said the idea sounds great but there have been counterarguments in the past, such as traffic concerns.

“There has been a lot of discussion.

A lot of this ground has been covered before. People’s opinions, the factors change, the board changes. … We might want to pull some of those old studies in, some of those minutes,” Palmer said.

Tuminello said he thought it would be nice to research the idea further and see whether it would be feasible.

Romeoville requests traffic signal to help town center development

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County committee moved forward on a proposal for a traffic signal at a Romeoville shopping plaza that drew concerns from the county’s transportation and legal staff.

The village of Romeoville requested the county board allow for the installation of a mid-block traffic signal on Weber Road at the Romeo Town

Center shopping plaza, which would help with the development of a CVS store. The plaza is home to a former Dominick’s store and gas station.

But the county’s state’s attorney’s office and division of transportation raised several issues with the proposal, saying there were a number of legal and liability concerns and that it did not meet engineering standards.

On Tuesday, the issue came before the Will County Public Works and Transportation Committee, which

passed a motion to move the request forward to the county’s Executive Committee. County board member Donald Moran, D-Romeoville, voted present. All other members in attendance voted in favor of the motion.

County board member Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, was the most vocal proponent for the request, saying the county should do what it can to help Romeoville economically.

“To me, this thing is a no-brainer,” he said.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak said planned improvements to Weber Road and Interstate 55 would further restrict access to Romeo Town Center on Weber Road and 135th Street.

That would impact the plans of Shiner Group – owner of the property – to redevelop it and bring in new businesses, leading to further difficulties for developments along the Weber Road corridor, Noak said.

“We have to look at the whole picture,” Noak said.

Perinar appointed new Channahon village trustee

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher this week swore in three village trustees who were re-elected to board seats in the April 4 election, and named and swore in a new trustee to take a recently vacated Patricia seat.

Village Clerk Patricia Perinar Perinar was appointed to replace former trustee Debbie Militello after Militello accepted an appointment on the Will County Board representing District 6. Schumacher will appoint a new clerk at a later date.

Perinar has served as clerk since 2013. She is also a substitute teacher at Minooka Community High School and in Channahon School District 17 schools, and is a volunteer for the MCHS volleyball team.

She has also served on the Three Rivers Festival Committee and as a Channooka Braves board member. Perinar’s term as trustee will end in April 2019.

The Village Board accepted Militello’s resignation and presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

Re-elected to the board and sworn in Monday were Sam Greco, Chantal Host and Mark Scaggs. Schumacher also reappointed Mark Thelo as trustee to the Channahon Police Pension Board and named Finance Director Heather Wagonblott as a trustee on the pension board, replacing Bob Guess.

Trustees on Monday also approved designs for a permanent monument sign for the St. Elizabeth Residences in Channahon Town Center. The senior residences are being constructed on land just west of the village hall and adjacent to St. Ann Catholic Church.

The town center area in the village has its own design guidelines, and, Director of Community Development Michael Petrick said, the town center guidelines are open to interpretation.

The signage proposed by the developer was approved by the village’s planning and zoning commission the week before.

Students learn through experiments with Science Expo

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka Intermediate School sixth-grade student Natalie Day always thought that if she drank water or a lemon-lime soft drink, her teeth would be safe from stain in case she did not brush after she drank.

“A lot of people don’t know what different drinks can do to their teeth. A lot of kids think they don’t need to brush after drinks,” Day said.

So, she and her science club friends, Quincy Harris, Ben Paugys, Nick Oleksyn and Clara McPhearson, decided to make the topic their focus for the annual Science Expo.

On April 27, about 150 students from Channahon, Minooka, Rockdale and Troy junior high school science clubs met at Minooka Intermediate School for the annual Science Expo sponsored by ExxonMobil.

ExxonMobil Midwest Public Affairs Manager Tricia Simpson said the company has put forth efforts to augment science, technology, engineering and math equipment in schools, but eight

years ago, decided an expo would be a great way for the students to showcase the knowledge they have obtained over the school year.

“We give each team $250 for their project, so everyone starts at a level playing field and they are not judged.

They have to use the scientific method to develop and execute the project.

All of the projects are done at school, so they are all student led and built,” Simpson said.

Day said her team decided to take dark and light drinks that most children her age drink on a regular basis and soak eggs in the drinks for two weeks to see what happened to the shell.

They rated the stains and what happened to the shell from 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst damage to the shell.

The least damage was caused by water and the worst was Kool-Aid, because the sugars actually created a mold film on the outside of the shell.

Project topics included drones, fingerprint-opened lockers, oil spill cleanup, hovercrafts, cars, crystals, plants, new crutches, water filtration, rockets and more. “All groups chose their topics and had the freedom to run with their ideas, which led to a lot of discovery and learning of concepts,” Lange said.

“As a teacher, I realize that students

can learn more when a project doesn’t work. That is the true learning part.

We need to let them discover and then they are more vested in an idea.”

Troy Middle School student Gianna Gonzalez said she came up with her project because of her passions.

“I want to help the world in some way, it will be fun to try. I like the ocean and I know the problems such as the coral reef dying. Oil spills can affect our oceans. I would like a career as a scientist or artist or engineer like my dad,” Gonzalez said.

She wants to find a better way to clean up oil spills, so she took the Dawn dish soap that was commonly used and put it in a container to see what happened. Then, she and partner Kailey Staniszewski took oil and water and added iron fillings and the oil was drawn to the iron fillings, which seemed more effective to the pair.

Simpson said STEM concepts are present in every type of career and a solid foundation in STEM and its process can prove beneficial no matter what type of further schooling a student chooses.

OBITUARIES RAYMOND AULTZ Raymond Aultz, age 69, passed away suddenly at his home Thursday April 27, 2017.

Raymond is survived by his son, Troy (Erica) Aultz; his grandchildren, Anthony, Dominic, Isabella Aultz. His mother, Helen Aultz; siblings, Helen (George) Miller, Carol (Raymond) Weber, Robert (Kathy) Aultz, Marilyn (Jim) Evans, Barbara (Randy) Spivey. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Preceded in death by his father, Roy Aultz.

Raymond served his country proudly in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked for many years at Illinois Auto Supply, and enjoyed working on antique cars and anything mechanical. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held Friday, May 5, 2017, at the Woodlawn Funeral Home 3201 W. Jefferson Street in Joliet at 6:30 pm. Family will receive Friends on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 3:00 pm until the time of service. Inurnment will be private.

ELVIN L. BENSON

Born: June 7, 1924 Died: April 28, 2017

Elvin L. Benson, 92, late resident of Essington Place, Joliet, IL, and previous longtime resident of Wilmington IL, passed away to meet his Lord and Savior, and late wife Louise on April 28, 2017.

Elvin was born June 7, 1924, in Abingdon, IL, to Floyd and Elsie Benson. Elvin served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. On May 16, 1946, he married the love of his life, Louise (Smith) Benson. They were married almost 68 years. He retired from the Joliet, IL Arsenal, in Civil Service as safety officer, and then worked, and retired from the Wilmington School District.

Elvin loved working in his yard and garden, and could build or fix almost anything. He was always eager to help others or giving a helping hand to others needing help. He and Louise served as Sunday school teachers and youth leaders at the Wilmington Baptist Church (now, Island City Baptist Church) he also helped build the church. He was a bus driver/director, Royal Ambassador Leader and Deacon along with other hats he wore, during his association with the church. Together, he and Louise were volunteers at St. Joseph Hospital, Red

Cross workers, members of the Illinois Baptist Disaster Relief Team. They did missionary work with Global Outreach in Central America countries and, went to the Ukraine, Romania and more. They also worked winters at Tucson, AZ with Caring Ministries. Elvin loved spending time with his family and friends, and never met a stranger.

Elvin is survived by his and Louise’s three children, Linda (Michael) Bailey of Wilmington, IL, Glen (Allie) Benson, Oklahoma City, OK, and Larry (Lois) Benson, Choctaw, OK.; Elvin also leaves 8 grandchildren, Michelle Bailey Hamilton, Glendale, AZ, Dawn Bailey-Curley, AZ, Brent Benson, OKC, OK, Shawn Benson, OKC, OK, Kelly Benson Wolfinbarger, Tulsa, OK, Kent Benson, TX, Scott Benson, OKC, OK, and Aaron Benson, OKC; Elvin leaves behind many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; along with sisters, Ruby (Richard) Reeves, Helen (Robert) Fogle, Ruth (Ronnie) Whyde, Betty (Ken)Roberts, and Carol (Roger)George. Elvin’s surviving brother is Ralph Benson.

Elvin is proceeded in death by his father, Floyd Benson; mother, Elsie Benson; sisters, Erma Benson, and Mary Alldread; and brothers, Harold, George, and Richard.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, at Island City Baptist Church, Wilmington, IL. Memorial gifts may be made to Annie Armstrong mission offering at Island City Baptist Church or Joliet Area Hospice.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Private Interment at a later date at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

CAROLE T. DOLAN Carole T. Dolan, age 54. At rest Monday, May 1, 2017, in La Grange Park, IL. Born in Oak Lawn, IL a resident of Chicago living in Joliet the past four years. Carole enrolled at Joliet Junior College to improve her education.

Surviving is her mother, Donna (Les) Kunsman of Morris; one sister, Kimberly (Jim) Lechnick of Batavia; and two nephews, Ethan and Noah Lechnick.

Tonya was a member of the Wilmington Moose Lodge #241 and the American Culinary Federation (ACF). She had a passion for food, took great pleasure in baking, and enjoyed running, playing golf and photography. Tonya loved her cat, as well as traveling.

Thomas Paul Lozar, age 70, passed away at his home in Joliet, IL on April 30th, 2017.

Born and raised in Joliet to Arthur and Victoria (nee Wisneski) Lozar. He graduated from Joliet East High School class of 1965 and received a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University. He married his wife of 47 years, Kathy, in the summer of 1969.

Over the past three years, he courageously battled cancer and was happy to celebrate his 70th birthday on April 15th with his children and grandchildren. Tom was an avid collector of antique cars. His passion for cars was showcased as the proud owner/operator of Illinois Auto Supply for over three decades. He enjoyed car races, skiing, fishing and watching old movies.

Most of all, Tom was a simple man who wholeheartedly enjoyed spending time with his family and a few close friends.

She was a member of the Pinochle Club that she and her friends started in 1955. Richard Lee LeGrand, age 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2017, with his loving family by his side.

Richard is survived by his children, John (Mary) LeGrand and Teresa (Peter) Adams; grandchildren, Joseph (Susan) LeGrand, Robert LeGrand and Thomas (girlfriend Emily Smith) LeGrand, Steven Lanier, Jennifer Lanier, Michelle Lanier and Christopher Raymond; neighbors and good friends, Gary and Kathie Kahovec. Richard was expecting his first great-grandchild from Tommy and Emily due in September. Preceded in death by his wife, Kay LeGrand (nee Riggs) (1991); parents, John and Coletta (nee Strack) LeGrand; brothers, Adrian, Bill, Cleo and Jim LeGrand; and sister, Alberta Marquardt.

Richard was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and was the youngest of six children. He graduated with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri the School of Mines and Metallurgy. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Richard began his career at U.S. Gypsum in Kansas City, Missouri, and continued his career at National Gypsum in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was then transferred to Waukegan, Illinois, where he was subsequently hired as plant manager for Ivex Paper Mill in Joliet, Illinois.

Richard was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Plainfield.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Richard was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many trips to Canada with his friends. One of his biggest joys was being able to help people, from volunteering at St. Joseph Medical Center to lending a helping hand fixing household items and visiting his elderly friends at home or in the nursing home. He loved spending time with all of his grandchildren and completely fulfilled one of his wife’s most important requests to “take care of her grandbabies.”

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. PAUL KIYOSHI MORIMOTO Born: July 7, 1930 Died: May 1, 2017

Paul Kiyoshi Morimoto, M.D., passed away peacefully on May 1, 2017, with his family at his side.

On July 7, 1930, Senjiro and Florence Morimoto gave birth to their only child, Paul Kiyoshi, in Centralia, Washington.

There he spent a typical happy childhood enjoying the outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. After World War II broke out, Paul and his parents were evacuated to internment camps with tens of thousands of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast.

The internment camps were either hastily constructed temporary structures with plywood walls, dirt floors, and tarpaper roofs or were vacant horse stables. There were 10 camps scattered throughout the barren, windswept deserts of the West. Paul spent his adolescence from age 11 to 15 years at Camp Tule Lake, a misnomer, since this was located in the California desert; Camp Minidoka in Idaho; and lastly at Rohwer Camp in Arkansas. Paul learned that life has no guarantees and that circumstances may change at a minute’s notice. He developed his calm resilience and ability to persevere under the harshest of conditions. Paul also learned his work ethic picking strawberries and watermelons in the humid Arkansas heat.

Leaving the last camp at Rohwer, Paul and his family relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where he attended Lake View High School. Paul received his undergraduate education, majoring in chemistry, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. There he met his wife, Ruth.

While working 3 jobs, Paul received his M.D. at the University of Illinois. During this time, his first son, Steve, was born. Paul then completed an ophthalmology residency at Cook County Hospital and during that time also served as team physician for the Chicago Cubs. Following his residency, the family of 3 moved to Joliet, IL, where Paul joined the ophthalmology practice of Robert W. Lennon in 1960. Shortly thereafter, his second son, David, was born. While starting his practice in Joliet, Paul faithfully and proudly served in the Illinois National Guard Reserve for 7 years.

Paul embarked on a career spanning over 42 years, selflessly serving the greater Joliet community. His style of practice was one of compassion and empathy, all the while delivering the best care to his patients. He would often work until 10:00 to 11:00 PM, until the last

patient was seen. During his career he served the community in ways extending beyond medicine. He was a member of the Rotary Club and instituted a diabetes screening program to detect an often silent disease. Paul was a member of numerous professional societies and never missed furthering his education at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society meetings during his entire career. Paul provided care at both Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and Silver Cross Hospital. While on staff at St. Joe’s, he served as president of the medical staff and donated his honorarium to the hospital so that an operating microscope could be purchased.

Paul was an avid runner since the 1960s, even preceding the fitness craze. He competed in several Chicago Triathlons, finishing 1st or 2nd in his age group of 70 and older. He traveled the world, including the pyramids of Egypt and the Savanna of Africa, with Ruth at his side.

Paul was a devoted husband to Ruth; father to Steve (Irene) and David (Celeste); and grandfather to Stephanie (Matthew King), Paul, Max, Emily and Sarah. He will be forever remembered and missed dearly.

A Memorial Gathering for Paul Morimoto will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. NEW YORK – Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that she’s taking responsibility for her 2016 election loss but believes misogyny, Russian interference and questionable decisions by the FBI also influenced the outcome.

The former Democratic presidential nominee offered extensive comments about the election during the Women for Women International’s annual luncheon in New York. Clinton said she’s been going through the “painful” process of reliving the 2016 contest while writing a book.

“It wasn’t a perfect campaign.

There is no such thing,” Clinton said in a Q&A session with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “But I was on the way to winning until a combination of [FBI Director] Jim Comey’s letter on Oct. 28 and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me but got scared off.”

She reminded the audience packed with women that she earned 3 million more votes than President Donald Trump.

“If the election were on Oct. 27, I would be your president,” she said.

Ex-officer pleads guilty in black man’s slaying

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A white former police officer whose killing of an unarmed black man running from a traffic stop was captured on cellphone video pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal civil rights

CNN won’t run Trump ad referring to ‘fake news’

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump’s supporters are accusing CNN of censorship for not airing an advertisement touting the president’s accomplishments, which the network said Tuesday it rejected because it was its own form of fake news.

The ad from Trump’s campaign – he became a declared candidate for re-election in 2020 on Jan. 19 – said that “America has rarely seen such success” and lists a series of actions from the first 100 days of his presidency.

“You wouldn’t know it from watching the news. America is winning, and President Trump is making America great again,” the ad says. The faces of NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and CBS’ Scott Pelley are shown on screen behind the phrase “fake news.”

Trump tweet: Gov’t ‘needs a good shutdown’

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that the U.S. government “needs a good shutdown” this fall to fix a “mess” in the Senate, signaling on Twitter his displeasure with a bill to keep operations running. But Republican leaders and Trump himself also praised the stopgap measure as a major accomplishment and a sign of his masterful negotiating with Democrats.

On the defensive, Trump and his allies issued a flurry of contradictory statements ahead of key votes in Congress on a $1.1 trillion spending bill to keep the government at full speed through September. After advocating for a future shutdown, the president hailed the budget agreement as a boost for the military, border security and other top priorities.

“This is what winning looks like,” Trump said during a ceremony honoring the Air Force Academy football team. “Our Republican team had its own victory – under the radar,” Trump said, calling the bill “a clear win for the American people.” Late in the day, the White House said he would indeed sign the bill.

Yet Trump’s morning tweets hardly signaled a win and came after Democrats gleefully claimed victory in denying him much of his wish list despite being the minority party. They sounded a note of defeat, blaming Senate rules for a budget plan that merited closing most government operations.

But the White House then rallied to make the case to the public – and perhaps to a president who famously hates losing – that he actually had prevailed in the negotiations. Budget Director Mick Mulvaney briefed reporters twice within a few hours to adamantly declare the administration’s success. He was joined at his

second briefing by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. And Trump himself used the normally nonpolitical football ceremony to proclaim his own success.

Mulvaney, criticizing Democrats for celebrating, said Trump was “frustrated with the fact that he negotiated in good faith with the Democrats and they went out and tried to spike the football to make him look bad.”

Asked how the president would define a “good shutdown,” Mulvaney suggested “it would be one that fixes this town.”

Trump’s embrace of such a disruptive event came days after he accused Senate Democrats of seeking that same outcome and obstructing majority Republicans during budget negotiations.

Lawmakers announced Sunday that they had reached an agreement to avoid a shutdown until Oct. 1 – a deal that does not include several provisions sought by Trump, including money for a border wall.

It also came at the start of a week in which the House is considering a possible vote on a health care overhaul that would repeal and replace Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. The spending bill is set for a House vote on Wednesday, when it’s likely to win widespread bipartisan support, though a host of GOP conservatives will oppose the measure, calling it a missed opportunity.

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin defended the package, calling it an “important first step in the right direction” that included a “big down payment” on border security and the military. And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said the bill “delivers some important conservative wins.”

In fact, the White House on Monday had praised the deal as a win for the nation’s military, health benefits for coal miners and other Trump priorities.

Government proposes cutting support for Meals on Wheels Federal funding for Meals on Wheels is on the chopping block. The Trump administration budget blueprint released in March calls for the elimination of two federal block grants.

That’s money the federal government gives the states for social welfare programs, and those programs include home-delivered meals and meals served in senior centers.

Most of the nation’s 5,000 meal programs also rely on money from the Older Americans Act passed in 1965 to fund about 35 percent of the cost of the meals they serve. Those funds are also in jeopardy. The budget blueprint calls for an 18 percent cut to the budget of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which administers the Act, and programs are bracing for more cuts.

Paul Kraintz, who heads the senior nutrition program at Meals on Wheels in Martinez, California, says that while his program would lose about $67,000 it now gets from one of the block grants, he’s really worried about the potential budget cut at HHS. “If they take 18 percent of that, it’s going to be big.”

Why the attack on meals delivered to the elderly, many of whom are homebound, ill and unable to cook or shop?

At his March news conference, budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters, “Meals on Wheels sounds great,” but to take that federal money and give it to the states, and say, ‘Look we want to give you money for programs that don’t work’ – I can’t defend that anymore.” He claimed the program was “just not showing any results.”

Mulvaney didn’t say what he meant by results. He didn’t have to. His comments were aimed at creating doubt in the minds of legislators who might look favorably on cutting the Health and Human Services funds for use elsewhere in the federal budget. The potential impact on hungry elders was not a high priority.

It didn’t matter that thousands of seniors on waiting lists for food in communities across the country are, in effect, stuck in a bread line.

Several academic studies examining Meals on Wheels programs have challenged comments like Mulvaney’s regarding the program’s effectiveness. A recent randomized controlled study funded by the AARP Foundation showed significant differences among seniors on waiting lists, those receiving home-delivered meals, and those getting deliveries of frozen foods.

Seniors with home-delivered meals reported the greatest improvement in health and quality of life.

In 2013 Brown University researchers found that meals delivered to seniors allowed them to stay in their homes rather than going to a nursing home, and that resulted in a net savings

Nursing home funding from Medicaid may be in trouble, too, if Congress cuts more than $800 billion out of Medicaid over the next 10 years, which has been proposed. States could have fewer dollars to channel into nursing home care.

The picture is bleak for senior services.

Thirty-eight states also use Medicaid dollars for home-delivered meals.

None of this makes much sense. The number of people needing food is growing rapidly and has been for decades. Erika Kelly, a government affairs officer for Meals on Wheels America, an umbrella organization for local programs, told me its members are already serving 23 million fewer meals than in 2005, a decline that has resulted in an increase in hunger.

Federal funding has not kept pace with the need. Money from state and local governments and private philanthropy hasn’t been able to provide the rest of the money to feed everyone who needs a meal. “The gap has grown so much there’s no way private philanthropy will fill it,” said Ellie Hollander, who heads Meals on Wheels America.

Philanthropy works only in places where there are lots of wealthy individuals and corporations to tap. In Dallas, donors who can write checks for $1 million or $2 million have helped whittle the waiting list from about 3,000 a year ago to 2,000 today.

What do those still on the lists do? “People have come to us who are literally starving, or they ask family to bring stuff from the food bank.

It’s whatever they can do to get food into their homes,” said Katherine Krause, president of VNA Texas, the agency that delivers the meals.

Programs such as those in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, aren’t as lucky. There aren’t many rich donors or big companies. “It’s worse now than it ever has been for funding,” Director Betty Bradshaw said.

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy, quoting the historian Arnold Toynbee noted in a special message to Congress, “a society’s quality and durability can best be measured ‘by the respect and care given its elderly citizens.’”

That respect and care may be threatened if government support to feed the elderly is cut.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR If Williams is so taken with war, he should join it

To the Editor: Brian Williams, a newscaster for MSNBC, gave a forceful endorsement of American military might when he described the beauty of seeing Tomahawk missiles being fired into Syria. To paraphrase Mr. Williams: “A beautiful picture at night... guided by the beauty of our weapons.”

Such a description makes weapons of destruction seem benign when, in reality, their impact leaves a path of rubble and death.

Each missile costs over $1 million. The military-industrial complex benefits handsomely from conflicts and wars. If Brian Williams is so taken by the thundering brilliance of U.S. weaponry and the subsequent silence of death, he may want to leave the newsroom and change his suit for the armor of war.

With over 800 military bases throughout the world and the recent commitment of more U.S. military personnel to Yemen, Somalia and Iraq, the U.S. is incrementally moving toward perpetual war without an end in sight. The

State Department and its dedicated diplomatic corps are being eviscerated at a time when their expertise is needed. Diplomacy is being sidelined in favor of military solutions.

The Republican budget reflects a dangerous commitment to militarism by requesting an additional $54 billion for an already bloated Pentagon while simultaneously slashing programs that benefit the poor, the elderly, veterans and the middle class. This budget is unconscionable, cruel and dangerous. It will result in increased poverty and inequality. On the world stage, the U.S. emphasis on military solutions will create more instability, fear and hatred.

Humankind is crying out for statesmanship, for world leaders to cooperate in order to meet the challenges of climate change and the possibility of nuclear conflict. One looks in vain for a rational power center, represented by statesmen who think in terms of peace, sustainability and a reverence for humankind.

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Christine Malito put the finishing touches on Lincoln-Way East’s 9-3 regional title win over Lockport last season when she hit her first grand slam in high school.

On Tuesday, the Griffins senior smacked her second career grand slam, and it also came at the expense of the Porters. Her first-inning blast accounted for all of East’s scoring in a 4-1 SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division victory.

As a result, the Griffins (15-2, 5-0) took a two-game lead over Lockport (22-3, 3-2) at the midway point of the SWSC Blue race, while Bolingbrook is in second place with a 3-1 mark.

“That was amazing,” Malito said of her grand slam. “I was definitely due since I had been struggling a little bit, so to get that hit, especially in my first at-bat, made me very happy.

It was one of those that as soon as I hit it, it felt amazing. I did watch it and I was jumping up and down as soon as I passed first because I was so excited, it was great.

“It definitely gave us a huge advantage to jump on them early and let us know that we could beat them. We took two extremely strong programs in a very difficult situation because of the school closure, and I love how quickly we were able to mesh and work together to become a strong team. Everyone gets along and that’s going to help us have a successful season.”

In the opening inning, Alli Jaquith led things off with a single, Sidney Bloomfield (2-for-3) reached on an error and Storako walked to load the bases with no outs. Following a line out to Hagen, Malito (2-for-3) sent one over the fence in left center field.

Lockport scored its only run in the bottom of the first when Tara McElligott doubled with two outs, and following a walk to Gracie Voulgaris, Emily Dybas (2-for-3) got an RBI single.

The Griffins advanced six other runners into scoring position, but Hagen didn’t allow any others to score. Her biggest challenge in the final six frames came in the third when Bloomfield, Storako and Ami Ill loaded the bases with no outs, but the Porters’ pitcher coaxed two pop-ups and a lineout to get out of the mess.

Meanwhile, Storako only allowed four other base runners to reach scoring position and just two of those were able to get to third base. The Porters threatened to score a run in the final frame, but a runner was thrown out at

“There was one pitch,” Porters coach Marissa Chovanec said. “If you take that one back, it’s a different ball game. I thought Elly settled in and did a much better job in the last six innings.

We’ve had a couple of games where

we’ve given up some runs in the first inning. So we’re still working on what we’re doing to warm up on a cold day like today.

“She’s a good pitcher and we scattered some hits throughout but just weren’t able to put a couple of those

together to turn the game around. We were knocking on the door and had a number of innings with runners on base and a hit here or there could have changed things. So I’m pleased with the effort that the kids gave at the plate by putting balls in play.”

MINOOKA – Kyle Cockrell supplied the understatement.

“Baseball is a funny game,” he said. “I just had a feeling that would happen.”

Cockrell pitched 62/3 innings Tuesday in Plainfield Central’s 2-1 Southwest Prairie Conference victory over Minooka. Nate Yusko relieved to get the final out, but it would not be easy.

Jon Butler, whose grand slam home run highlighted the Indians’ 12-1 five-inning victory over the Wildcats last Thursday, was at the plate. Hayden Laczynski, the last batter Cockrell faced, singled to left-center field to keep the bottom of the seventh alive.

Yusko’s first pitch went to the backstop, moving Laczynski into scoring position. Then on a 2-1 pitch, Butler grounded out to Cockrell, who was stationed at second base after being removed from the mound.

“I’ve played a lot of baseball, and somehow things like that happen,” Cockrell said.

Central (17-6, 6-4) thus evened the series and kept Minooka (14-8, 6-4) from gaining a share of first place in the wild SPC race as Plainfield North on Tuesday knocked off Oswego East, which had been in first by its lonesome.

“Kyle threw his butt off, didn’t he?” Wildcats coach John Rosner said. “He had good stuff.

“It was good for us to get back at them after the way we lost to them a few days ago. After that game, you just tip your cap to them, and you get out there and win the next day.”

On a chilly afternoon with the win blowing in from left-center field, Cockrell and Minooka left-hander Tyler Talbot were locked in a pitchers’ duel from the get-go. Central left two runners on base in the first inning, three in the third and had a runner picked off first by Indians catcher Nick Airola after a leadoff single in the fourth, thus negating a potentially good inning.

Butler flared a double to left field with one out in the bottom of the first, and Minooka stranded two runners in the fourth.

Both teams got on the board in the fifth, and both had help.

“We had a tough time throwing the ball,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “What did we have, four throwing errors? We did not have our best defensive day.

“Tyler [Talbot] would be the first one to admit he did not have his best stuff, but he was able to battle. But we didn’t help him, either.”

In the bottom of the fifth, Grant Olsen singled pinch-hitting for Antonio Milazzo, and Milazzo returned to run and stole second. With two outs, Butler grounded a ball to deep second base. Alex Santiago bobbled it only slightly, but that was enough to allow Milazzo to score and tie it, 1-1.

Central scored the game’s only earned run in the sixth when Rocky Pascente walked, Yusko sacrificed and Nate Haupt lined a single to right to knock in courtesy runner Connor Simnitch.

“My first two at-bats weren’t good,” Yusko said of two popups. “I knew I had to drive the baseball. He [Talbot] gave me an outside curve and I was able to handle it.

“Kyle [Cockrell] was amazing. Everyone in this conference is equal.

For us, it all comes down to how we do on the field, how we show up to play.”

“When I started warming up, I could feel it was going to go pretty well,” Cockrell said. “Our guys made solid contact all day, and Nate [Haupt] did an excellent job getting

that big hit. We can trust him to come through.”

Cockrell said the wind worked in his favor on the mound.

“Rocky [Pascente] did a great job behind the plate, blocking pitches, and coach [Pat] Hanley did a great job calling pitches,” he said.

Minooka finished with six hits, two by Cole Alstott. Central had five.

“Like we were saying before the game, anyone can beat you on any given day in this conference,” Petrovic said. “It was a difficult offensive day, and their guy [Cockrell] did a terrific job. He hit spots, stayed down and hit the corners.”

“This was a great victory for us, and we’re in the same sectional, so we may see these guys again,” Rosner said.

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – The Cubs just returned from Boston, where the atmosphere for three exciting games was fun, festive and friendly at Fenway Park.

Things took an ugly turn Monday, when Baltimore Orioles player Adam Jones, who is black, said he heard racist taunts at Fenway. Jones also had a bag of peanuts thrown at him.

Cubs players as well as manager Joe Maddon reacted to the situation Tuesday before the Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-3, at Wrigley Field.

“You hear stuff, and you hear stuff at times,” outfielder Jason Heyward said. “You’re going to hear stuff. Everybody hears different stuff. Nothing shocks you. Nothing really shocks me to the extent that

Relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. said he was saddened that such things continue to happen in 2017.

“I feel like those days are

over with; Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier,” Edwards said. “I’m with Adam Jones 100 percent myself.

That’s disrespectful as a fan and something you don’t see in this game. He didn’t say anything to them (the fans).

If I was him, I wouldn’t walk

away, either.”

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant said he would like to see tougher penalties for fans who hurl such abuse.

“You’re there just to enjoy entertainment,” Bryant said.

“Anytime you disrupt that, I think there should be harsher

punishment. We’re out there having fun. We’re trying to perform, hit home runs, be entertainers. Anytime that kind of thing happens, it puts a damper on things. I would love to see harsher punishment.”

Maddon said it’s important to keep up the movement toward positive change.

“My comments are pretty much widely shared,” he said.

“But at some point you’ve got to do something about it.

You just can’t keep listening and hearing it. Then you talk about it briefly and you table it and hope it goes away, knowing it never will.

“Whatever it takes, I’d definitely be on board with trying to support it or help it (punishment), but it has to come from organizations and groups within cities.

“I still believe that if there is something you don’t like and you consider it a legitimate problem, don’t just table it. Just keep working at it until you find somewhat of a solution that’s workable.”

Quintana dominates, finally gets some run support

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After demoting outfielder Jacob May to AAA Charlotte, the White Sox filled the void on the 25-man roster Tuesday by recalling outfielder Willy García from Charlotte and lined up their three Garcias in the outfield behind left-hander Jose Quintana.

Quintana hasn’t had much backing throughout his career, but this particular support group worked to his liking. Willy, the left fielder, drove in a run his first time up; Leury, the center fielder, drove in one on his third at-bat; and Avisail, returning after taking a day off with a sore groin, reached base his first three times up with two singles and a walk.

Avisail also drove in a run and scored one as the Sox (14-11) stopped a two-game losing skid with a 6-0 victory at Kauffman Stadium.

Quintana was dominant with eight innings for four-hit, scoreless

ball. He struck out seven, walked two and lowered his ERA from 5.22 to 4.10. Anthony Swarzak, who has not allowed a run in 10 appearances, pitched the ninth.

The Garcias were scheming some sort of all-Garcia victory bit in the outfield after the game.

“Yes, of course,’’ Willy said after returning to hugs in the visitors clubhouse before the game. “We have something planned we are going to perform after the game.”

Willy Garcia played in two games in the Minnesota series from April 14-16 while Melky Cabrera was on the paternity list, going 2 for 7 with a double against the Twins. On April 14, it marked first time three players with the same surname started a game together. Willy returned to Charlotte when Cabrera returned and came back when May failed miserably at the plate.

The Sox were looking for their seventh win in nine games and have two more games in Kansas City before

finishing a 10-game road trip with a weekend series against the Orioles.

“The opportunity was special,’’ Willy said through interpreter Billy Russo.

“That was kind of cool. It was special for us. But yeah, besides that it was just another game.”

This wasn’t just another game for Quintana, the Sox ace who, after three shaky starts to start the season (6.75 ERA with four homers allowed) has strung together three quality starts. He surpassed six innings for the first time.

May’s demotion after he produced only two hits after earning the Opening Day starting job in center field solidified Leury Garcia’s hold in center. A multipurpose infielder/ outfielder, he took a.306/.323/.484 hitting line into the game while providing adequate defense, at best, in center.

Willy Garcia, a right fielder for most of his minor league career and the position he seems best fit for,

played left during his brief stay with the Sox. He played a handful of games in center at Charlotte and says he’s comfortable backing up Leury there.

The Sox have very little major league ready depth at the position in their farm system.

“That’s a position where I feel comfortable,’’ Willy said. “I played center field in the minors, in the winter league. That’s a very familiar position for me.”

Besides the Garcias’ run-producing, the Sox got two singles, a sacrifice fly and two RBI from catcher Geovany Soto and three hits including a double and an RBI from second baseman Yolmer Sanchez.

All of which was more than plenty the way Quintana was breezing through the Royals, who came in batting .214 and easily last in baseball with 69 runs scored.

Quintana entered the game with an average of 3.87 run support, the second lowest in the majors since 2012.

Boston Red Sox President Sam Kennedy apologized to Jones on Tuesday. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, in a tweet Tuesday, called the behavior by fans “unacceptable and shameful.” has been the subject of racist heckling in Boston’s ballpark before, but this was one of the worst cases of fan abuse he has heard in his 12-year career, according to USA Today Sports.

“It’s pathetic,” Jones said. “It’s called a coward. What they need to do is that instead of kicking them out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand. Something that really hurts somebody.”

The Red Sox said they were reviewing what happened at the game, but that any spectator behaving poorly forfeits the right to be in the ballpark and could be subject to further action.

“The racist words and actions directed at Adam Jones at Fenway Park last night are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated at any of our ballparks,” Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “My office has been in contact with the Red Sox, and the club has made it clear that they will not tolerate this inexcusable behavior.”

The Orioles’ 5-2 victory marked the latest testy game between the AL East rivals this season, including a dustup in Baltimore a week ago.

In the teams’ previous meeting at Camden Yards, Boston reliever Matt Barnes sent a pitch that whizzed behind Manny Machado’s head and hit the slugger’s bat. Barnes was suspended four games and fined.

Machado had rankled the Red Sox with a hard slide into second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s left leg two days earlier. Pedroia missed a handful of games.

BOSTON – Boston Red Sox President Sam Kennedy is apologizing to Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones after fans at Fenway Park taunted him with racial slurs.

Kennedy apologized Tuesday after Jones said someone also threw peanuts at him during Monday night’s game.

Kennedy said the organization is “sickened by the conduct of an ignorant few.”

Jones, who is black, said he was “called the N-word a handful of times” in quotes reported by USA Today Sports and The Boston Globe.

“It’s unfortunate that people need to resort to those type of epithets to degrade another human being,” Jones said.

Red Sox spokesman Kevin Gregg said a total of 34 fans were ejected from Monday’s game. He said one fan was ejected for using “foul language” toward a player on the field, but it is unknown whether that was directed at Jones. The fan that hurled the peanuts also was ejected. Gregg didn’t specify why the other fans were ejected.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker called the incident “outrageous and disgraceful.”

“I’m glad they kicked the guy out and I hope they never let him back in ever again. There’s no place in Massachusetts, there’s no place in Boston, there’s no play anywhere for that kind of behavior,” the Republican told reporters.

Baker said he didn’t know the exact details of the incident, but added: “if you throw something at a player on the field and you hit them, that’s a crime and you can charge somebody for that.”

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters at a Statehouse news conference on an unrelated matter that police were working with Fenway security officials to find out what happened and whether a criminal complaint is warranted.

“From what I understand is that they weren’t made aware of it until an hour after the game when the player made the allegation,” Evans said. “I don’t think security at the time were aware why this individual, if it was this individual, was even escorted out.”

Police Lt. Mike McCarthy said later that a fan threw a bag of peanuts at the Orioles’ dugout – not at Jones – and hit a police officer posted nearby, not the center fielder.

He told The Associated Press that security officials had the man thrown out before police could identify him.

Pat Day’s unlikely Kentucky Auto Dealer Derby hits 25th anniversary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – This was no time for Pat Day to be patient.

It paid off for a lifetime.

Known for being a strategic jockey, Day was aboard 16-to-1 longshot Lil E. Tee when the horse broke well from the gate and held his ground in the pack until he found a hole.

The horse rallied from 10th to stalk overwhelming favorite Arazi late and then pass Casual Lies to win the 1992 Kentucky Derby in 2:03.04. Day jumped off and gave praise, throwing his hands to the sky in triumph.

That pose would eventually be immortalized in bronze in the paddock at Churchill Downs. Day, a Hall of Famer, relives how it felt to get his signature victory every time he visits.

Tuesday marks 25 years since Day rode from the No. 10 post position to an upset victory at Churchill Downs. That 1992 win in his 10th attempt turned out to be Day’s only triumph in the Run for the Roses.

“With Arazi, I thought the race was for second place,” Day, 63, said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “Arazi opened up a four-, fivelength lead, but I started to think maybe I could run for second place.

“That’s when I put Lil E. Tee to the test and he responded and blew past Arazi and Casual Lies. To say the least, it was satisfying.”

His presence looms large at the track where he earned a record 2,481 of his 8,803 career victories, a total that includes five Preakness and three Belmont wins. The third annual Grade 3 Pat Day Mile will be run on Saturday in the run-up to the 143rd Derby.

The silver anniversary of what Day calls his most significant achievement holds extra meaning because the colt’s trainer, Lynn S. Whiting, died at 77 on April 19 after a struggle with cancer and a stroke.

Day and Whiting celebrated the 20th anniversary of Lil E. Tee’s victory and the jockey said they had looked forward to another joyous observation this week. The jockey paused while sorting through mixed emotions of recognizing the milestone without Whiting. He then recalled the glee he felt when he and his friend got to smell the roses together.

“He was just an astute horseman,” Day said of Whiting, whom he began working with on Lil E. Tee as a 2-yearold.

“And all things being equal, you knew he’d get the best out of a horse.

Then, as now, the four-time Eclipse Award winner credited his faith in God for overcoming drug and alcohol abuse and enduring setbacks, such as several competitive Derby finishes before and after his lone breakthrough.

“I was where God had me to be and doing what he had me to do,” Day said.

“Whether I won or didn’t win, Hallelujah! But I sure went to the wire with that feeling that I wanted to win.”

Day had four seconds and two thirds in the Derby, prompting the question of how many more times he could have won. Rather than wonder what if those other times, the jockey sometimes referred to as “Patient Pat” is thankful for having multiple opportunities to win the sport’s marquee race.

And Day’s mastery of Churchill Downs stoked confidence that his spot in the winner’s circle at the Derby was just a matter of time and opportunity.

Lil E. Tee delivered with a performance that quickly and perfectly fell into place.

“It just goes to show that even the great jockeys don’t get that many chances to win the Derby,” said fellow Hall of Famer Steve Cauthen, who rode Affirmed to the Triple Crown in 1978.

“It was great for him to win the Derby and win it for Lynn Whiting.”

Jubilant as he was, Day stresses that he would’ve been fine without that win.

Fortunately for him, he never has to wonder otherwise.

Chefy’s Kitchen is located at Fritz’s Pour House in Joliet But first, I have to tell you about the soup and turkey chili, both homemade. A cup of soup is only $2.50; a bowl is $4. For chili, make that $3 for the cup and $4.50 for the bowl. More than reasonable in my estimation and something to try another day.

Chefy’s also offers a variety of daily specials, entrée-wise, with prices overall around $7.95 and $8.95. Ditto for most of its sandwiches, too, such as the turkey Reuben and burgers.

Now back to the poor boys.

When the sandwiches first arrived, my initial thought was that the amount of meat was disproportionate to the bun size. Steeling myself for a predominantly bread taste, I was

pleasantly surprised. That wasn’t the case at all.

My friend’s poor boy came with a side of homemade french fries. I ordered mine with a side of homemade onions rings, so we could swap. I’d go back for the onion rings.

They were the best I’ve eaten anywhere: hot, tasty, crunchy yet flaky on the outside with tender onions on the inside.

I shared one, reluctantly, even as I helped myself to the shoestring-style french fries on my friend’s plate: hot on the outside with a nice crisp and soft on the inside.

Now I’d never had a poor boy made with olive oil – I make mine at home

with garlic butter, too – but I liked it.

My friend pronounced the poor boy as juicy and tender, but wishes mozzarella cheese and grilled onions were offered. The fries were good and lacking the greasy aftertaste this person sometimes notices in other varieties.

The bill before the tip was $23.87 and we ate like kings. And that was with the $2 substitution charge for the onion rings.

There was no dessert that we saw on the menu, but honestly, we were too full to order any.

I wonder whether the pork poor boys are just as good. There’s always next time.

CREST HILL – OK, so this place is seriously a good deal.

I heard about it 18 months ago but never had the chance to stop in. But a friend and I were in the area one day, realized we were hungry, and decided to check it out for one reason.

Poor boys.

We were curious as to how Chefy’s Kitchen’s poor boys compared with those served at other venues and the way each of us prepares them at home.

The menu said they came with a garlic paste; the server said this was a mixture of garlic and olive oil.

We like olive oil. We like garlic. We were sold.

We each ordered the beef version of the sandwich.

While we waited, we checked out the menu.

Appetizers were standard in variety and pricing: breaded chicken wings ($6.95 for a six-piece order, $8.95 for an eight-piece and $10.95 for a 12-piece), cheese sticks ($7.95, either mozzarella with marinara sauce or pepper jack with ranch), breaded deep-fried portobello mushrooms ($7.95), and battered and deep-fried onions rings ($5.95).

Two items of note.

For those who like green beans (I don’t), an order of battered and deep-fried green beans costs $7.95. The spinach and artichoke dip for $7.95 (served with fresh tortilla chips) also looked interesting.

Acupuncture may provide some relief for tennis elbow Dear Doctor: I have played tennis for many years, but have been unable to play over the last year because of tennis elbow.

Would acupuncture help?

Dear Reader: Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is a tendon inflammation at the elbow. You don’t have to play tennis to develop the condition, but the specific motion of hitting a ball with a tennis racket is, unfortunately, an effective way of doing so. There are many different types of treatment for tennis elbow, including anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, ultrasound, platelet-rich plasma injections and steroid injections.

As for acupuncture, a review of multiple studies published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine attempted to answer your question. One of the studies found significant pain relief with acupuncture compared with placebo. Overall, reduction of pain was 55.8 percent in the acupuncture group and 15 percent in the placebo group.

However, another study showed an immediate improvement of symptoms with acupuncture after two weeks, but no difference after two months compared to placebo. Lastly, a study comparing acupuncture to ultrasound therapy for tennis elbow found no difference between the two treatments.

Overall, the authors concluded that acupuncture was helpful for tennis elbow, but it did not have a sustained response, lasting only two to eight weeks.

A 2015 study combined results from six different studies. Two of the studies compared real acupuncture with sham acupuncture, which involves placing the nee-

dle in nontraditional acupuncture points at random. The authors found a benefit with standard acupuncture compared to sham acupuncture. Also, there were conflicting studies on whether acupuncture with electrical stimulation was beneficial or not.

One other review from 2002 showed acupuncture for tennis elbow did have immediate benefit, but the authors could not conclude a long-term benefit.

Now, I have to acknowledge I’ve been performing acupuncture for tennis elbow for the past 12 years and have seen the treatment has been beneficial for the majority of patients. I have treated these patients with nontraditional acupuncture points at the tendon insertion of the elbow and have used electrical stimulation. I also add traditional acupuncture points. It is difficult for me to assess how much of the benefit is from the acupuncture, how much is from physical therapy and how much is just the tincture of time.

The studies do appear to show pain relief, but I feel that acupuncture should be combined with physical therapy. The bottom line: Acupuncture is one of many therapies that can help the pain of tennis elbow.

Dear Abby: I recently had a baby and gained 25 pounds. My husband and I decided to go on a post-baby diet, which includes cutting out carbs and sugar. Over the past month, he has lost about 15 pounds; I lost 8. The problem is, he is constantly talking about our diet.

He dictates everything we eat, although he refuses to cook. He also wants to know my exact weight to see how I’m doing. Abby, I’m too embarrassed to tell him my weight as I’m a few pounds heavier than he is. Why doesn’t he understand weighing me is very embarrassing? We are studying how not to double-cross partner with our reply to his takeout double. A simple bid indicates 0-8 points, a single jump promises 9-11 and a cue-bid of the opener’s suit shows 12 points or more. So what about a double or triple jump in a suit?

Since the cue-bid is artificial and, in a way, unlimited, this liberates the wild leaps to describe specialized hand-types that occur rarely.

Both jumps suggest something like 4-7 high-card points with a surprisingly long suit. The double jump promises a six-card suit and a triple jump a seven-bagger. The South hand is a minimum for his three-spade advance, and North’s raise is on the light side.

West cashes two diamond tricks, then shifts to the heart king. How should South continue?

West was tempted to make a takeout double over three spades, but the vulnerability was unfavorable. Note that five diamonds doubled goes down two, which would be fine at a different vulnerability.

Declarer must concede a trick to the spade ace, so has to eliminate his heart loser. The only way to do that is to take three club tricks. South wins the third trick with dummy’s heart ace, plays a club to his king (the honor from the shorter side first) and returns a club to dummy’s jack.

When that holds, declarer discards his last heart on the club ace and plays a trump.
