JOLIET – The newly elected and newly re-elected were sworn in Monday, and one outgoing councilwoman gave a farewell statement at the Joliet City Council meeting.

The meeting marked the arrival of Councilman Don “Duck” Dickinson, who won an at-large seat in the April 4 election.

It marked the return of Councilwoman Jan Quillman, who starts her fourth term, and Councilman Michael Turk, who was first elected in 1987 and is the senior council member.

Leaving her seat was Brooke Hernandez Brewer, who was appointed in October and was running in her first election.

Dickinson

“It’s good,” Dickinson said afterward when asked how it feels to be on the council. “I’m glad the campaign’s done, and it’s time to get to work. It’s something I’d looked forward to for a long time.”

He was sworn in by Will County Subcircuit Judge Daniel Kennedy, a friend and fellow Joliet West High School alum from the class of 1978.

Kennedy said he would not have imagined back then that he as a judge would be swearing in Dickinson as a councilman, but said they both kept a tab on politics in their Joliet West days.

“We were both interested in government,” Kennedy said. “We followed local elections and national elections.”

Quillman

Quillman choked back tears as she was sworn in, something she said came unexpected and which she attributed to the loss of her father, Munson Hallums, since her last election.

“My dad was always my big supporter,” Quillman said afterward, adding that the Bible which she uses when being sworn into office belonged to Munson Hallums’ mother. “The Bible’s like 85 years old. It just opened the floodgates.”

Quillman in a brief statement to the audience had a message for the other candidates in the election. Fifteen candidates ran for the three at-large positions on the council.

“I want to say to those who ran, if this is your passion, don’t give up,” she said.

“Keep on running. I did it four times, and I finally made it.”

Turk

Turk also recognized his father, Stanley, who at 91 and dealing with dementia, missed one of his swearing-in ceremonies for the first time.

When he went to visit his father after the election, Turk said, his dad pointed to the front page of The Herald-News with Turk’s picture on it.

“He said, ‘Did you see that?’” Turk said, noting his father was able to recognize that his son had been re-elected.

Turk also recognized former Councilman Joe Shetina, who was in the room and is the longest-serving councilman ever in Joliet.

“Joe served 36 consecutive years on the Joliet City Council. That’s amazing,” Turk said.

Brewer

Brewer said she was “truly honored and blessed” to have served on the council.

“I made history,” said Brewer, who is Hispanic. “I was the first minority to serve as a councilperson at large.”

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, who appointed Brewer, told her, “You came in under some very trying circumstances, and I think you acquitted yourself very well.”

Joliet plans to pave over Union Station plaza

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brick pavers, trees and a statue honoring renowned dancer Katherine Dunham will be removed from the front of Union Station to accommodate a new brewpub, according to a plan that goes to the city council on Tuesday.

The council is slated to vote on a $178,000 contract to pave over the Union Station plaza with decorative concrete to accommodate the MyGrain brewpub and restaurant that is expected to open

by July.

The council’s Public Service Committee gave its OK to the contract on Monday.

The concrete will be stamped and stained, City Manager Jim Hock told the committee.

“They’re going to be not only delivering grain but picking up cans of beer,” he said.

MyGrain plans to distribute canned beer brewed at its Union Station location to retailers, as well as sell beer to customers at the brewpub.

Hock said it may be possible to bring back some landscaping once the brewpub is operating and the city can determine whether potted trees or plants can be located in spots that do not interfere with trucks.

The plaza now is lined with brick pavers, some of which have become discolored and deteriorated with age.

Joliet Engineering Supervisor Scott Gapsevich said trucks will need to use the front turnaround area at the station for deliveries because they cannot stop on Jefferson Street, which is the alternative entry point to the brewpub.

The two-level plaza also will be changed to one level to facilitate deliveries.

The city received one bid on the project from Semper Fi Land Service Inc. for $178,421. The city’s cost estimate for the job was $172,443.

Lincoln-Way District 210 board elects new officers after election

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way District 210 board that was surrounded by much controversy last year is almost entirely new after a packed election.

Two new board members and three who were appointed last year after several resignations and then elected were officially seated at Monday’s reorganization meeting, leaving Ronald Lullo and Christine Glatz as the only members with more than a year or so on the board.

The task ahead for the new board will be to continue keeping the cashstrapped district afloat and rebuild the trust of the community that was broken after a series of controversies that led many to criticize the district for its lack of transparency and financial mismanagement.

Joe Kirkeeng, Joseph Kosteck and Aaron Janik – who ran as a slate in

the April 4 election – were chosen to be the board president, vice president and secretary, respectively. Janik, along with Beth Janus-Doyle, are the newest members of the board.

Kirkeeng said he was humbled to be on the board and serve as its president. He said the new board is dynamic and will bring different perspectives.

He said District 210 is about more than any one person or board member.

“That’s part of what we’ll work toward. It’s our district,” he said.

Former Board President Dee Molinare and board member Christopher Kosel, some of the longest-serving members, both of whom lost the election, were not at Monday’s meeting. Neither returned messages seeking comment.

Molinare and Kosel received the third- and fourth-lowest amount of votes for four-year terms in an election year that saw renewed interest.

The race had 13 candidates – five ran for two seats with unexpired two-year terms and eight ran for three seats

with four-year terms. It was the most candidates since at least 2005, and the election received about twice the number of votes than past elections have received on average.

Molinare and Kosel faced questions at a candidates forum before the election about their tenure on the board before the district landed on the state financial watch list, including one question on the revelation of a 2014 memo from Superintendent Scott Tingley that anticipated a deficit despite presenting a balanced budget.

Following the results of Election Day, Kirkeeng said Kosteck, Christopher Lucchetti and himself winning was a signal the steps the board took last year are in the right direction and he plans on keeping “that momentum going.” All three were appointed last year.

At Monday’s meeting, Lucchetti nominated Kirkeeng to become president and it was unanimously approved. Lullo nominated Kosteck as the vice president, and former vice

president Glatz nominated Janik as secretary.

The first action items that the new board approved were the issuance of $4 million in tax anticipation warrants, or short-term debt, for the district’s operations and maintenance fund and a resolution authorizing partial repayment of an interfund loan. Janus-Doyle abstained in the vote on the short-term debt. All other members voted in favor of both items.

Kirkeeng said Monday that he looks forward to working with the board, administration, faculty and, most importantly, the community.

The board will continue to focus on maintaining the district’s academic achievement. The process of community engagement has begun with the strategic planning and advisory committees, he said.

“Those are things we have to keep in motion; because at the end of the day, it’s our district. It’s everyone’s district,” he said.

Funeral arrangements set for Semaj Crosby Wake will be Friday morning

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Funeral arrangements have been made for a 1-year-old girl whose body was discovered last week under a couch in her Joliet Township home.

A wake for Semaj Crosby has been scheduled at 9 a.m. Friday at Prayer Tower Ministries, 500 Stryker Ave. in Joliet, according to the Minor-Morris

Funeral Home website. After services at the church, Semaj will be buried at Elmhurst Cemetery, 1212 E. Washington St. in Joliet.

Funeral director Terry Morris said Monday that the cemetery has donated a gravesite for Semaj.

On Tuesday evening, Semaj’s mother, Sheri Gordon, reported Semaj missing from their house in the 300 block of Louis Road in the Preston Heights neighborhood. Emergency personnel

WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – Three men robbed a gas station at gunpoint Saturday.

The holdup occurred at 2:38 p.m. at BP, 29849 Southeast Frontage Road. One employee – a 22-year-old man – was shaken up, but not injured during the robbery.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the suspects pulled up in a newer model Nissan or Kia SUV and entered the store.

“Once inside, all three subjects pulled out black handguns and yelled to the employee not to move and to ‘Give me all your money,’ ” Hoffmeyer said.

One of the robbers remained by the door while another went behind the counter and held a gun to the clerk’s head.

Car crash at Route 6 in Channahon leaves 3 hospitalized

CHANNAHON – A two-vehicle crash Monday led to three people being hospitalized and the closure of Route 6 in Channahon.

At 1:10 p.m., Channahon firefighters and police received a report of an incident in which a passenger vehicle and a van crashed into each other on Route 6, Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis said.

The driver of the passenger vehicle and two people in the van were hospitalized as a result. Their conditions were unknown to Petrakis late Monday afternoon.

The driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle and it took firefighters 17 minutes to free the driver, Petrakis said.

Both directions of Route 6 from Canal Street to McKinley Woods Road were closed because of the crash, Channahon police stated in a Nixle alert. The roadway reopened about 4:30 p.m., a later Nixle alert stated.

Police were investigating the crash Monday. Calls to Channahon police were not immediately returned.

Police: Four armed teens rob Joliet gas station; no one hurt

JOLIET – Four teens used a gun to rob a Joliet gas station Sunday. No one was injured in the holdup, which occurred about 2:40 p.m. at the BP Amoco at 1411 Riverboat Center Drive.

Police Chief Brian Benton said four suspects who appeared to be in their early teens entered the store and announced the robbery.

“A witness and a clerk attempted to physically stop one of the suspects when that suspect pulled out a long handgun,”

Benton said.

After taking cash, the suspects fled in a silver Toyota with Illinois license plate Q204169. Benton said the Toyota may have been related to an earlier carjacking in Chicago. It was last seen heading east on Interstate 80 past Larkin Avenue.

Deputy Chief Al Roechner said Monday evening that Joliet police had not linked Sunday’s robbery to two Saturday robberies in Wilmington Township and Dwight but were still investigating the possibility of a connection.

Decade later family ‘losing hope’ Plainfield woman will be found PLAINFIELD – Family of a Plainfield woman who has been missing for a decade say they’re losing hope she’ll ever be found.

Melanie Greenberg’s husband is Lisa Stebic’s cousin and she has been spokeswoman for the woman’s family since she went missing in spring 2007. Greenberg tells the Lisa Stebic Chicago Tribune that she doesn’t think she could have thought a decade ago that “there still would be no resolution.”

Stebic was 37 when she disappeared. Her husband, Craig Stebic, said the mother of two went to work out and never returned.

He declined to comment to the newspaper last week. Authorities named him a “person of interest” in her disappearance.

However, he hasn’t been charged with any crime and has denied involvement.

Police and prosecutors in Will County say the case hasn’t been forgotten.

Channahon man arrested on child porn charge

bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A Channahon man was arrested Friday as part of a continuing child pornography investigation.

Steven Long, 36, was taken into custody shortly before 6 a.m. after police used a search warrant to enter his

home in the 2700 block of West Hemlock Road.

Police Chief Jeff Wold said while Long’s residence is in the Grundy County portion of the village, the investigation started with the Steven Long Will County High Tech Crimes Unit.

Will County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Charles Pelkie said investigators learned Long was downloading and trading child pornography and informed Channahon police.

During the search, investigators used Cache, the Labrador trained to detect chemicals used in electronic storage devices.

“Cache found an encrypted exter-

nal hard drive that was not in plain view,” Pelkie said.

“Computer equipment was seized during the search and will undergo forensic examination,” Wold said.

Channahon police had no prior contact with Long.

Long was arrested on one count of possession of child pornography and booked into the Grundy County Jail.

Malave, of the 900 block of Norley Avenue in Joliet, and Rodriguez, of the 24400 block of West Pellinore Drive in Shorewood, were arrested on charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm and unauthorized possession of ammunition.

The driver, Jazmine Gomez, 19, of Crest Hill, was ticketed for driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and driving without a registration light. A fourth woman was released without charges.

Romeoville woman flown after 6-vehicle Aurora crash

The Malibu driven by Rush then collided head-on with a westbound 2014 Nissan Sentra being driven by a 37-year-old Romeoville woman. Two minivans and another car then struck the Malibu and the Sentra. The woman driving the Nissan was flown from the scene. Rush also had “critical injuries,” according to the post, and was being treated at an Aurora hospital.

The drivers of two other vehicles were taken to a different hospital in Aurora for treatment and later released. Rush was charged with improper lane use, the post stated. There were no signs of impaired driving at the scene. The crash closed Butterfield Road for several hours.

JOLIET – Two women were arrested Friday after allegedly trying to hide a gun in one of their bras during a traffic stop by Joliet police. At 8:47 p.m., officers pulled over a white Buick Century with a broken registration light at Parks and Elwood avenues. Four women were inside the vehicle.

“As officers walked up, they could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“The four occupants were asked to step out one by one.”

AURORA – A Romeoville woman was critically injured Monday morning in a six-car crash. The collision happened at 6:43 a.m. at Butterfield Road and DuPage Parkway in Aurora.

According to a Facebook post from the Aurora Police Department, Terrence L. Rush, 22, of North Aurora, was trying to pass several eastbound vehicles while driving a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu.

“In an attempt to avoid a head-on crash, a westbound, 2015 Chevy Malibu driven by a 60-year-old Naperville man swerved and those two cars sideswiped each other,” the post stated.

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Police Department and the American Association of Retired Persons are sponsoring the AARP Smart Driver Course, according to an event news release.

CHICAGO – Illinois educators and school supporters have launched nearly 2,500 GoFundMe campaigns to help pay for classroom expenses since the fundraising site launched in 2010.

State emergency center activated after flooding

SPRINGFIELD – The governor of Illinois has activated the State Emergency Operations Center as flooding affects parts of the state after heavy weekend rains.

Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday morning said rivers are swelling with water in some Illinois communities, causing flooding.

Activating the operations center means that state agencies will be ready to quickly respond.

Rauner’s office says that so far inmate crews are helping with sandbagging in Murphysboro and Desoto in southern Illinois. Sandbags are being delivered to Dawson in central Illinois and Grand Tower and the Menard Correctional Facility in southern Illinois. The American Red Cross has a shelter open in Marion and others are available if needed.

CHICAGO – A man injured during a raid by immigration agents has filed a federal civil rights complaint in Chicago alleging authorities wrongly believed he was a gang member.

Plane makes emergency landing near Chicago

WEST CHICAGO – A plane operating under the regional branch of American Airlines has made an emergency landing at a suburban Chicago airport after reporting smoke in the cockpit.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday morning that it is investigating SkyWest Flight 2936, operated by American Eagle.

FAA officials say the flight departed Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 9 a.m. bound for Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and landed 15 minutes later “without incident” about 25 miles west at DuPage Airport in West Chicago, Illinois.

American Eagle is owned by American Airlines. American Airlines spokeswoman Marissa Snow said in a statement that the flight landed safely and passengers

Testing confirms record fish was hybrid crappie

CARBONDALE – Officials say genetic testing confirms that a state-record crappie caught in southern Illinois is a hybrid crappie.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the fish caught March 28 in Kincaid Lake in Jackson County appeared to be a black crappie but testing confirms it was a hybrid. Ryan Povolish of Carbondale caught the fish, which weighed 4 pounds, 8.8 ounces. The previous state record for a hybrid crappie in Illinois was 4 pounds, 8.3 ounces. That fish was caught in a Jefferson County pond in 2008.

The Illinois Natural History Survey completed the testing on Povolish’s crappie.

Mark Davis is a conservation biologist with the survey. He says they used DNA from a fin clip and compared it with other crappie from Kincaid Lake to make the assessment.

Missouri authorities probe student’s death at resort

CAMDENTON, Mo. – Authorities are investigating the weekend death of a University of Iowa freshman who was found unresponsive in a lakeside resort motel in central Missouri’s Camden County.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that 19-year-old Kamil Jackowski of Arlington Heights, Illinois, was found unconscious in the motel Sunday. He was later declared dead at a hospital, and an

9K mussels to help clean DuPage River in Illinois

NAPERVILLE – County forest preserve officials plan to release 9,000 mussels into the DuPage River in the hopes of bolstering the existing population and keeping the waterway clean.

DuPage County Forest Preserve District officials are scheduled to release the mussels into the river’s West Branch between May and mid-October at 11 locations along 13 miles of the river between Naperville and Warrenville, the Naperville Sun reported.

Jessi DiMartini, the forest preserve district’s aquatic research center coordinator, said the first batch was to be released last weekend but rainfall made conditions unfavorable. She said mussels can live to be over a century old and help the life of a river by filtering out such things as bacteria and algae.

“You don’t notice the little creatures under the water, but they’re there filtering away,” DiMartini said.

The West Branch used to house 15 species of freshwater mussels but is now down to nine.

WASHINGTON– Erasing the threat of a disruptive government shutdown, the White House and top lawmakers endorsed a $1.1 trillion spending bill Monday to carry the nation through September, an agreement underscoring that Democrats retain considerable clout in Donald Trump’s turbulent presidency.

Negotiators released the 1,665-page bill after Republicans dropped numerous demands on the environment, Obama-era financial regulations and abortion in marathon sessions over the weekend. The bill is slated for a House vote Wednesday, with a Senate vote ahead of a Friday midnight deadline.

“We thought we had the upper hand because a government shutdown would be on their shoulders, and we made that clear,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in an interview.

“We knew that if we didn’t push things too far we could get a good deal that could make us happy and that’s what happened.”

Trump and the White House had made concessions last week when the president relented on his demand that the measure include a $1.4 billion down payment for his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump repeatedly insisted during the election campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall, a claim Mexican officials have vigorously rejected.

Congressional Republicans and Democrats ignored Trump’s proposal to cut billions of dollars from domestic programs.

Democrats boasted of money for foreign assistance and cash-strapped Puerto Rico while winning funding for favored programs such as transit projects and grants for first responders. They also defied Trump on a bid to punish “sanctuary cities” and on im-

The White House and some top GOP allies declared victory anyway, citing billions of dollars more for the military. Trump won a $15 billion down payment on his request to strengthen the military, although that also fell short of what he requested.

Vice President Mike Pence told CBS News Monday that the administration “couldn’t be more pleased” and called the agreement it a “budget deal that’s a bipartisan win for the American people.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., praised the bill as well, saying it “acts on President Trump’s commitment to rebuild our military for the 21st century and bolster our nation’s border security to protect our homeland.”

Long-standing conservative resistance to big spending bills requires the party to seek Democratic votes to pass spending bills despite the Republican majorities both houses of Congress. That made the party out of power a major player in the negotiations. The talks also were spurred by a strong Republican desire to complete unfinished business well into the fiscal year and move on to health care repeal and tax overhaul, both of which are iffy propositions.

“If nothing else, it does al-

low the president to have at least one major success this week, which is great,” White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said. “He’s going to sign his first substantive piece of legislation this week, and it’s going to make dramatic increases in funding to his priorities.”

Ryan’s office peppered reporters’ inboxes with news releases cheerleading for the bill and GOP-won provisions such as extending a private school vouchers program for students in Washington, D.C.’s troubled school system through 2019.

Democrats had sought additional spending for nondefense accounts to match Pentagon increases above spending caps set by a 2015 budget pact negotiated with former President Barack Obama. They were forced to settle for far less with domestic increases in the 1 percent range.

The measure funds the remainder of the 2017 budget year, through Sept. 30. Capitol Hill Republicans joined Democrats in supporting increases for popular domestic programs such as medical research at the National Institutes of Health, with Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., for instance, using his powerful post on the Appropriations panel to take the lead on a 40 percent boost in research on Alzheimer’s disease.

Thousands rally for workers, immigrants The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Thousands of people from New England to the Midwest to the West Coast chanted, picketed and protested Monday as demonstrations raged against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies along with the traditional May Day marching in favor of labor.

Protesters flooded streets in Chicago.

At the White House gates, they demanded “Donald Trump has got to go!”

And in Portland, Oregon, police shut down a protest they said had become a riot, as marchers began throwing smoke bombs and other items at officers. At least three people were arrested and police urged the rest of the protesters, who included families with young children, to clear out after they pulled the permit for the march.

In Oakland, California, at least four were arrested after creating a human chain to block a county building where demonstrators demanded that county law enforcement refuse to collaborate with federal immigration agents.

Despite the West Coast clashes, most nationwide protests were peaceful as immigrants, union members and their allies staged a series of strikes, boycotts

and marches to highlight the contributions of immigrants in the U.S. “It is sad to see that now being an immigrant is equivalent to almost being a criminal,” said Mary Quezada, a 58-year-old North Carolina woman who joined those marching on Washington.

She offered a pointed message to Trump: “Stop bullying immigrants.”

The demonstrations on May Day, celebrated as International Workers’ Day, follow similar actions worldwide in which protesters from the Philippines to Paris demanded better working conditions. But the widespread protests in the United States were aimed directly at the new Republican president, who has followed aggressive anti-immigrant rhetoric on the campaign trail with aggressive action in the White House.

Trump, in his first 100 days, has intensified immigration enforcement, including executive orders for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and a ban on travelers from six predominantly Muslim countries. The government has arrested thousands of immigrants in the country illegally and threatened to withhold funding from jurisdictions that limit cooperation between local and federal immigration authorities.

In cities large and small, the protests intensified throughout the day.

Teachers working without contracts opened the day by picketing outside schools in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Activists in Phoenix petitioned state legislators to support immigrant families.

In a Los Angeles park, several thousand people waved American flags and signs reading “love not hate.”

Selvin Martinez, an immigrant from Honduras with an American flag draped around his shoulders, took the day off from his job waxing casino floors to protest. “We hope to get to be respected as people, because we are not animals, we are human beings,” said Martinez, who moved to Los Angeles 14 years ago fleeing violence in his country.

The White House did not respond to requests for a response to the May Day demonstrations.

Several protesters, such as 39-yearold Mario Quintero, outed themselves as being in the country illegally to help make their point.

“I’m an undocumented immigrant, so I suffer in my own experience with my family,” said Quintero at a Lansing, Michigan, rally. “That’s why I am here, to support not only myself, but my entire community.”

In Miami, Alberto and Maribel Resendiz closed their juice bar, losing an estimated revenue of $3,000, to join a rally.

“This is the day where people can see how much we contribute,” said Alberto Resendiz, who previously worked as a migrant worker in fields as far away as Michigan. “This country will crumble down without us.”

He added, “We deserve a better treatment.”

In Providence, Rhode Island, about the same number of people gathered at Burnside Park before a two-hour protest that touched on deportation, profiling and wage theft.

In Oakland at a later march, more than 1,000 people marched peacefully representing labor groups along with Mexican, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino and other immigrants.

Dear Mr. Berko: My wife and I have two questions. One concerns health savings accounts, and the other concerns Social Security. First, could you please explain the basics of an HSA and how someone qualifies? Next, my wife says our Social Security taxes have increased, but I say they have remained the same for the past 30 years.

We’d appreciate your answer to settle our argument. – DD, Durham, N.C. Dear DD: Years ago, it seemed that every time I responded to a question about health savings accounts or Social Security, some readers had better answers – and gladly let me know. So I’ve turned to Kristina Sommerkamp, a financial adviser in Boca Raton, Florida, who probably knows more about Social Security’s rules, regulations, administration, guidelines and governance than most of the homeboys who run this program from the bureaucratic swamp in Washington. Over the past 20 or more years, Kristina has helped many readers with immediate answers to questions that would take a high-level Social Security administrator a week to research. She also knows a great deal

Kristina said both of you are right and wrong. The tax rate (6.2 percent of your wages, which both you and your employer pay) has not been increased since 1990. However, the amount of money you and your employer have paid into Social Security has increased. The 229 disingenuous lawyers who sit in the House and the Senate are to blame. While the 6.2 percent tax rate has remained constant, the amount of your gross earnings subject to the SS tax has nearly doubled in the past 20 years. Kristina said your SS taxes in 1997 were based upon $65,400 in income, and 10 years later, that amount had grown by about 50 percent, to $97,500. Now, 10 more years later, your SS taxes are based upon an income of $127,200. So in 1997, your SS taxes were (6.2 percent of $65,400) $4,054. And in 2007, your taxes were

$6,045. Today you’re donating $7,886 to the big slush fund in the sky – and so is your employer. Those increases are well above the inflation rate; however, the additional money is needed to pay Social Security benefits to millions (including noncitizens) who would not have qualified a dozen years ago. But what’s past is prologue. Many believe that during the next 10 years, the tax base will rise by about 55 percent, to $196,850, as Congress changes the rules and permits more people to qualify for the benefits you have paid for over your working life.

Health savings accounts are just as tricky as Social Security and have just as many whistles, bells, loopholes and crevasses. Kristina said you must have a high-deductible health plan to qualify for an HSA. This means your health plan deductible as an individual must be at least $1,300, and the amount is $2,600 for family coverage. And HSA contribution limits are $3,350 for individuals and $6,750 for families. But if you are older than 55, you can increase your contributions (called “catch-up”) by $1,000 a year. There are no income limits or requirements. You don’t need

to seek permission from the IRS, and you can open an HSA with your broker, your credit union or an insurance company. The funds contributed to an HSA are not subject to federal taxes when deposited. The money that is not spent on “qualified medical costs” is rolled over and accumulates year to year for as long as you wish and can be used for retirement income. You can invest the money just as if it were in an individual retirement account, and the earnings are sheltered from federal taxation. Withdrawals for nonmedical or nonqualified expenses are treated like withdrawals from an IRA, including a 10 percent penalty. But be mindful that once you sign up for Medicare, you can’t contribute to an HSA. Because they’re designed by Congress, HSAs are overcomplicated strategies. So Kristina recommends that you consult with an expert before opening an account to avoid potential problems.

The new fast food? Convenience stores add hot, cheap options

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Saying “convenience store food” may make people think of spinning hot dogs by the counter, but places such as 7-Eleven are expanding their hot food offerings in hopes of stealing customers away from fast-food chains.

The push by convenience stores into hot, fast, affordable foods is just one of the pressures facing chains such as Burger King, Wendy’s and Taco Bell.

The traditional fast-food chains also are fighting for customers with smaller restaurant chains, and with supermarkets that offer prepared foods for busy shoppers.

Low prices and speed for ready-toeat foods at convenience stores are big factors. McDonald’s partly blames its declining number of customer visits in the U.S. on its failure to hold onto the deal-seekers at the cheaper end of its menu after eliminating the Dollar Menu.

“If you go to convenience store conventions, all they talk about is the decline of gas and tobacco, so they have to become more like [fast food],” Dunkin’ Donuts CEO Nigel Travis said in March, noting the effect of convenience stores

on his business.

In the past year, 7-Eleven has added $1.99 chicken sandwiches and cheeseburgers kept in warming cases. That’s in addition to sandwich melts the chain introduced in 2015. The chain – which still sells hot dogs by the counter – has expanded to about 8,900 U.S. locations and says food is a top priority.

“We can drop in a product [in stores] overnight, and all of a sudden we’re in a brand-new business,” said Nancy Smith, the company’s senior vice president of the chain’s food and drinks.

Convenience store prices points can also be a draw for people who may have less money to spend. About 60 percent of convenience store food customers have household incomes of less than $40,000, the National Association of Convenience Stores said in a recent report.

Prepared foods and drinks such as pizzas, burgers and coffee accounted for 22 percent of convenience store sales last year, an industry report said last month, a figure that has risen from 13 percent in 2010. The industry says many people in rural areas who may not be near supermarkets often get their groceries from convenience stores, but the push into hot and prepared foods in recent years is driven by another factor.

Cigarettes remain the No. 1 seller at convenience stores, but are generally on the decline. So convenience stores are expected to keep trying to sell more food as smoking rates fall.

The Sheetz chain, which is based in Pennsylvania and has more than 540 locations in six states, said half of its new locations are built with a drivethru, an accommodation the fast-food industry relies on for the majority of its sales. While Sheetz customers use the drive-thru mainly to order from the chain’s made-to-order foods such as burgers, the company says they can also request items such as a gallon of milk from elsewhere in the store if they want.

Travis Sheetz, the chain’s vice president of operations, said he has also seen growth more recently in the cold cases where yogurts, cut fruit and other pre-packaged foods are sold. Those options cater to the growing number of people looking for “convenient health,” he said.

Because the convenience store industry has so many smaller chains and independents, those stores might not have the resources to develop competitive prepared food offerings, said Chris Mandeville, a Jefferies analyst who tracks the industry. That may lead some

convenience stores to team up with fastfood chains such as Subway rather than compete with them, and open up outposts within their locations.

And for stores cooking up their own food offerings, the image of convenience store food is a challenge. “Older folks tend to think of the roller dogs that have been sitting on the grill for hours,” Mandeville said.

Wawa, which has about 750 stores along the U.S. East Coast, says the quality of food at convenience stores has improved. It also says convenience stores have an advantage over fast-food chains because people increasingly value speed and variety. Along with its prepared foods, such as hoagies and sandwiches, the chain offers packaged drinks and snacks that people can grab with their meals.

“That’s something that McDonald’s and the franchisees can’t match,” said Mike Sherlock, who heads Wawa’s food and drinks program.

And while those spinning hot dogs may be a punchline for some, they’re an easy way for smaller convenience store owners to get into the hot food business, said Jeff Lenard, a spokesman for the association. He said Burger King’s decision to add hot dogs to its menu last year reflects their popularity.

Athletes at 3 remaining Lincoln-Way schools make a statement When you turn back the clock to the beginning of last May, lots of things were going on in Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210, and much of it wasn’t good.

As the final days of one of the shortest-lived public high schools in state history approached, there understandably was a great deal of bitterness among taxpayers in the community, as well as disappointment among those who were most directly affected by the sudden change.

VIEWS Curt Herron The beautiful new North campus that was located on the east edge of the district on Harlem Avenue just south of Interstate 80, was set to close at the end of the school year, and all of its students would be moved to the East campus in Frankfort.

That, in turn, would send many of East’s students, primarily those from Mokena, to the original namesake Central campus. And to accommodate that, several students from Central would be sent to the newer West campus.

For those who had spent two or three years at the same school, the sudden shift to a new campus for a year or two obviously was the type of change few high school students ever have to worry about facing.

No longer dealing with a familiar

setting and separated from friends who would remain behind at the old school obviously could be very unsettling for many kids that age.

And for those who were involved in athletics or activities, the sudden transition figured to be quite concerning when one considers the especially close bond that many develop on athletic teams or in organizations such as the band and choir.

Continued from page 14 We really don’t know how most students will respond in such a scenario since, fortunately, there have been few examples in Illinois public school history of this type of transition.

I certainly am no sociologist, but rather a 30-year observer of the interactions among students as relates to their involvement in extracurricular activities.

After following high school athletics in the Joliet area since the late 1980s, I think I have a pretty good understanding of how students deal with each other in organized activities. It often is a very special bond, one that will not only create relationships that very well may last a lifetime but also forms values that young people will carry with them into adulthood.

Like many others, I was very concerned about how this reorganization would unfold. And although all that I have to go on are my own observations and comments with many student-athletes, I’m pleased to say that those involved seem to be making the best of it.

I often have asked athletes at the three schools about the transition and their feelings of their new or altered

PJ Fleck, Terrell’s coach during his career at Western Michigan, was hired as Minnesota’s head coach in January.

• Another former Illini, junior defensive lineman Bryce Douglas (Plainfield Central), has been a teammate of Bailey’s at Northern Iowa the past two seasons. The 6-1, 291-pound Douglas played in 11 games last season, including nine starts, and made 26 tackles with 5.5 for loss.

settings. Again and again, I hear encouraging comments about how well things have come together and how students are doing their best to create close teams.

That’s a testament to the many administrators in the district who obviously had a good plan and have executed it well. Having known many of these individuals for a long time, it’s no surprise that they helped establish a good foundation that could result in success. And I can’t speak highly enough of the coaching staffs at the

schools. Again, I’ve watched a lot of these individuals develop into excellent coaches throughout the years.

But while I never questioned their ability to teach the fine points of the game, being able to lead large numbers of student-athletes through what has been a challenging transition is another matter. All deserve to be commended for working together for the best interest of the kids. That may prove to be one of the greatest achievements of their coaching careers.

And the greatest credit of all for

• Washington Nationals righthander Tanner Roark (Wilmington) is scheduled to make his sixth start Tuesday night against visiting Arizona. He is 3-0 with a 3.64 ERA. In 292/3 innings, he has struck out 21 and walked nine.

• Cincinnati Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central) has been on the disabled list since April 21 with a strained right oblique.

Many could have felt sorry for themselves for the new settings that they found themselves in, but I’ve seen little evidence of that. While some may not have liked their circumstances, they were still often quick to adapt in order to build strong bonds among their new teammates.

So what could have been a failed experiment has actually created a unique opportunity. Many of these student-athletes now have the chance to establish friendships with a wider range of students, including some they may have already known through competing with them in the community and in club programs.

But perhaps most importantly, it sends a very exciting message to all of us adults as we see a world that is increasingly more divisive due to our differences of opinions. These young people have sent us a very encouraging message that I hope that we all will reflect on. Even in difficult conditions, very positive things can be achieved if individuals wish to do so.

Of this and that, beginning with football: Spring practice for NCAA Division I schools wrapped up in April, typically with an intrasquad game.

At Notre Dame, former Providence wide receiver Miles Boykin caught five passes for 102 yards as the Gold topped the Blue, 27-14. The five catches tied for most in the game and the 102 receiving yards were a team best.

Boykin, who will be a junior in the fall, has been listed as a second-team wide receiver on the Fighting Irish depth chart. Regardless, in coach Brian Kelly’s system, any receiver listed second on the depth chart sees significant playing time.

• Another game of local interest happened at Michigan, where 57,418 fans showed up to see the Maize beat the Blue, 31-29.

Running back Ty Isaac (Joliet Catholic), who will be a senior in the fall, broke a 28-yard run in the first quarter for the Maize. The second-leading rusher in the game, he finished with 47 yards in five carries, a 9.4 average.

Soon after the spring game, coach Jim Harbaugh took Isaac and the rest of the Wolverines on their trip to Italy, where they spent a week they will not soon forget.

Maddon struggles to keep outfielders on their game

bmiles@dailyherald.com CHICAGO – With the Cubs back home and playing by National League rules after a weekend in Boston, manager Joe Maddon is having a hard time finding playing time for all of his outfielders.

“I do,” Maddon said Monday before the Cubs played the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.

“Jon Jay right now deserves to play. So does (Albert) Almora. When you had that DH working, it was easier to get almost everybody in there like you wanted to. It’s a nice problem to have.”

Kyle Schwarber was the designated hitter for all three games at Fenway Park against the Red Sox. He was back in Monday’s starting lineup in left field, with Jay in center field.

“I think for the most part we’ve balanced it out pretty good,” Maddon said.

“Matty Szczur’s the only guy who has really had to

ride the bench more than anybody. And of course, he does it in such a professional way. But otherwise, everybody’s been involved. I do look at it. I want to keep everybody in the game.

“When you ask them to play, they need to have played in order to expect good out of them. Matty is the one guy I’d like to try to figure out a little bit more, but for right now, this seems to fit, the way we’ve been doing it.”

Acquiring the taste: Jay entered Monday with a batting line of .385/.478/.487.

He was 15 for 39. The Cubs signed him to a one-year contract in November. Jay played in two World Series with the Cardinals. Last year, he was with the San Diego Padres.

“I’ve described him as being an acquired taste,” Maddon said. “I didn’t get him when I first saw him.

You watch him from a scout’s perspective, there are certain guys when you walk into the ballpark and you just see them once or

twice, you don’t quite understand where the benefit is. He’s the guy that if you watch for a week straight, you totally get it.

“Seeing him last year with the Padres and before that the Cardinals, especially last year with the Padres, a team that wasn’t that good, just really watching he went about his business, really convinced me how good he is. I love having him here now. Absolutely.”

A good first month: Reliever Carl Edwards Jr. finished April with a record of 1-0, an ERA of 0.00 and a WHIP of 0.60. He has pitched 10 innings over 11 games and given up two hits while walking four and striking out 13.

“Beautiful, man, and he’s young,” Maddon said of the 25-year-old Edwards.

He said it: Maddon admitted he’d like to “adopt” Jay. “That’s just one of those visceral moments,” Maddon said. “If I needed a son or a sidekick, I’d go for Jon Jay, I think.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Tim Anderson’s first April in the major leagues is behind him, and aside from a 13-10 team start for the White Sox, he was glad to see it go.

After batting .283 with nine homers in his rookie season and signing a $25 million extension during spring training, Anderson batted .204 with two homers and six RBI in the first month. And while he used his considerable athleticism to make more flashy plays than any Sox on the field, he also muffed more than his share of routine plays.

What gives?

Third base coach Nick Capra, for one, suspects an occasional lack of concentration. And Anderson, for another, doesn’t disagree.

“Definitely something I can learn from,” said Anderson, who dropped a soft liner, bobbled a ground ball and was charged with his sixth error in loss to

the Tigers on Sunday.

He also made an outstanding running catch in foul territory.

“Forget the spectacular plays, the mistakes are something I can learn from and get better,” Anderson said before the Sox opened a four-game series against the slumping Royals on Monday at Kauffman Stadium with a 6-1 loss.

“The one was more lack of focus, the line drive was lack of focus, trying to make a play before I make a play. Trying to get the runner before I caught ball.”

Capra, the Sox third base coach and a former infielder, is kind of at a loss trying to analyze the inconsistency.

“I can’t put a finger on it,” Capra said.

“Maybe a lack of focus or concentration sometimes, I don’t know. I really don’t have an answer. He makes so many outstanding plays out there, it overwhelms us sometimes how athletic he is.”

Capra abstained from breaking down Anderson’s technique, saying, “He’s kind of an unorthodox player, anyway, because he’s so athletic. He reads a hop,

gets the ball and gets rid of it.”

Anderson didn’t have much action in the field Monday, and he singled in four at-bats on a night when the Sox lineup mustered five hits against left-hander Jason Vargas and the Royals bullpen.

The Royals stopped a nine-game losing streak against rookie right-hander Dylan Covey, who, after opening with three scoreless innings, gave up six runs on nine hits including home runs by Jorge Bonifacio and Eric Hosmer, the latter knocking Covey out with two outs in the sixth.

The Sox scored one in the fourth on Jacob May’s RBI single, the struggling rookie’s second hit in 35 at-bats.

Anderson hasn’t struggled in Maylike magnitude, but he expected a better start.

He remains even-keeled.

“There are going to be times when the game gets up on you,” he said. “It’s a humbling game. When you find yourself getting up, it brings you down and brings you on a straight line. You can’t

get too high or low.”

At the plate, Anderson knows the league is adjusting to him after he aggressively feasted on fastballs last season.

“From the success I had last year, they’re figuring out who I am,’’ he said.

“They’re using that against me.”

Anderson’s on-base percentage last season was just .306 because he walked all of 13 times. With three walks this year, the on-base percentage is unsatisfactory at .238, especially for one who batting first and second in manager Rick Renteria’s lineup.

Pitchers are “trying to stay out of the zone, so he has to bring them back in,” Renteria said. “Basically focus on that hitting zone he can manage, and then when he gets two strikes, battle.”

“We’re off to a great start, and I feel like it’s going to click here,” he said. “I’m still learning the game a lot more, more so than just going off athleticism. As I get better and learn myself, I’m locking in and learning the game more in detail.”

Pace makes rounds on radio, TV to explain draft moves

After making the biggest deal of his life last week, Bears general manager Ryan Pace went about selling it to the public Monday, appearing on national and local radio shows to explain his trade of four draft picks to move up one spot and draft Mitch Trubisky.

“You’re never going to be great in this league if you don’t have this position right, and so that was a commitment for us this offseason: to improve that position,” he told ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike. “And, quite honestly, it’s been way too long since this franchise has been in that position: to get good consistent play from the quarterback.”

Some criticized Pace’s moves Thursday: He drafted a quarterback after paying Mike Glennon $16 million

to start this year and gave up a thirdround pick, fourth-rounder and a third next year to move up.

Not even the 49ers – who made the trade with Pace – were sure what he was up to.

According to The MMQB, which was embedded with the 49ers, GM John Lynch thought the Bears were trading up to draft Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas. When chief strategy officer Paraag Marathe suggested they’d take Trubisky, Lynch replied: “Then why did they go get Glennon?”

Pace defended his move-up trade by saying he assumed teams were in contact with the 49ers because they’d made the same calls to the Bears to move up.

Pace said he and coach John Fox were in lockstep about the pick – “I always have his back, he has my back.

We’re arm-in-arm,” he told ESPN – despite a national report saying otherwise.

As for his relationship with Glennon, Pace reiterated to WSCR-AM what Fox said Saturday: that players are typically angered when a team drafts someone who plays their position.

Howard visits Bears: The Bears didn’t draft a defensive end, but they might end up getting a starter after all.

Former Chiefs defensive lineman Jaye Howard, 28, visited Halas Hall on Monday, a source confirmed. One year removed from being a hot free agent, Howard would be an intriguing option alongside Eddie Goldman and Akiem Hicks.

The 6-foot-3, 301-pounder played in eight games last year, starting five, before finishing the season on injured reserve with a hip flexor injury.

Long improving: Guard Kyle Long has gained 45 pounds in less than three months as he continues to rehab from right ankle surgery and a bad reaction to medication.

The idea that they have to explain their drafting of quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a guy who has thrown 11 NFL passes since the end of the 2014 season would be laughable if it wasn’t so … no, actually, it is laughable.

That Glennon might be sad, hurt, wounded and/or destroyed is something we’re all going to have to live with.

Somehow. I’d like to think that if we put one foot in front of the other, we’ll eventually get past the pain.

If Glennon had been under the preconception that he was anything but a stopgap until the Bears found their next quarterback of the future, then he and his agent didn’t do their homework. The Bears surely left open the possibility that he might be the long-term answer at quarterback, but they never counted on it. How could they, given his so-so résumé? He’s their starter for 2017, and he should be celebrating. Loads of quarterbacks out there would love a year’s worth of certainty.

The $18.5 million mentioned above answers any concerns that the Bears

But the Bears were so secretive about the player they wanted that when they swapped places with San Francisco on draft night, the 49ers didn’t even know who general manager Ryan Pace was going to select. Coenen earns All-American honors SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Monday that Lewis University redshirt freshman Ryan Coenen has been named the AVCA Newcomer of the Year and he also was named to the AVCA All-America Second Team.

Coenen, a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball First Team selection and MIVA Co-Freshman of the Year, averaged 3.2 kills a set and was second on the team in kills (342). He recorded double-digit kills in 20 out of 27 matches and had four matches of 20 kills.

Against ranked teams, Coenen finished with a team-best 189 kills and averaged 3.38 kills a set, while hitting .319 (189 kills, 59 errors, 408 kills) in 14 matches.

Coenen was not the only Flyer to be recognized by the AVCA, as redshirt sophomore opposite hitter Mitch Perinar, redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons and sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto were selected as Honorable

Mention All-Americans.

Perinar earned his second-straight AVCA Honorable Mention All-America award after being named to the All-MIVA First Team. He led the Flyers with 359 kills and averaged 3.18 kills a set.

He finished with a hitting percentage of .301 (336 kills, 102 errors, 759 attacks), which was good for ninth in the conference.

Simmons, who was an All-MIVA First Team honoree, led the conference in digs (257) and averaged 2.11 digs a set, good for second best in the league.

He recorded double-digit digs in eight matches this season, highlighted by a pair of 17-dig outings against both Harvard and Pepperdine.

In his first season as the Flyers’ starting setter, Yoshimoto guided Lewis to a team hitting percentage of .308 (1454480-3167). That mark is the seventh best hitting percentage in school history for a single-season. He recorded 30 or more assists in 25 contests, highlighted by 55 helpers against Harvard.

Gluten Free Wikaduke Support Group keeps celiac patients on track

PLAINFIELD – Celiac patients: If you attend a Gluten Free Wikaduke Support Group meeting, expect to eat.

A major focus is food and food preparation, said Tracy Caswell, of Shorewood and a group co-founder, said. This may include cooking demonstrations and dietitian guest speakers, along with sharing recipes and offering tips about gluten-free products and restaurants that serve gluten-free menu items.

“We’ve even done beer tasting,” Caswell said. “Everyone brings in a bottle of favorite beer – or buys one they’d like to try – and we do little shot glasses of beer.”

Small wonder the group pays strict attention to food. According to Mayo Clinic, celiac disease “is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye,” which can cause intestinal damage.

Celiac can’t be cured, but patients can manage the disease and promote intestinal healing by strictly following a gluten-free diet, according to Mayo Clinic. But that’s where it gets tricky – and where Gluten Free Wikaduke Support Group seeks to help.

Especially when it seems the world has jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon, Caswell said the group gives attendees the right knowledge to care for themselves and recipes so they don’t feel deprived.

The first year after diagnosis is the most challenging – and depressing, Caswell said. Because the odds are most favorite birthday foods and traditional holiday foods contain gluten.

But the support group will help participants learn how to make gluten-free versions of grandma’s sugar cookies and gluten-free options for Easter brunch, Caswell said.

“We tell our participants, ‘If you can make it through the first year, you’ll be fine,’” Caswell said. “After that, it gets a lot easier.”

A depressing diagnosis

Pat Carroll of Crest Hill was tested for celiac disease after her son and granddaughter were diagnosed with it.

The diagnosis came as Carroll was nearing retirement and looking forward to traveling.

Through joining Gluten Free Wikaduke Support Group, Carroll learned how to read labels, how to advocate for herself in medical situations (certain medications and dental preparations may contain gluten, she said) and how to bring her own food to gatherings, when necessary.

Carroll no longer shuns social events.

“We’re just very, very careful,” Carroll said.

A serious disease – and hope

Wikaduke Support Group co-founder, said loved ones often don’t understand how serious celiac disease is.

“At first, it seems very isolating,” Boris said. “That’s the best part of the

support group. We’re all in it together; we all have the same feeling. The longer you’re a celiac, the more you get to know people who understand. You feel safe with them.”

Boris was diagnosed in 2002. Caswell was diagnosed in 1998. They founded the group in 2006. If someone poses a question they can’t answer, Boris said she turns to the University of Chicago Medicine Celiac Disease Center, where she volunteers.

Caswell said that if celiac patients are avoiding gluten and still feeling unwell, to check with their doctors. That doesn’t mean the diet isn’t working. They may have another condition in addition to the celiac, which happened to Caswell.

Patients who participate in a support group may be more compliant with the diet, Caswell said. Caregivers and parents of celiac children are also welcome to join, she added.

“We’re an opportunity to keep people on task,” Caswell said “We answer questions and offer support in a social environment. And if anyone comes to the meeting, the first thing we will probably do is eat.”

Senior Services of Will County participates in Yale University study JOLIET – The Yale School of Public Health asked Senior Services of Will County to participate in a study of how adults over age 65 are being cared for in Will County.

They hope to learn how health care providers, social services and private organizations coordinate medical and social services for older adults to reduce health care costs.

Using the data from 20 communities, Yale intends to characterize health care and social service networks quantitatively. But they also want to uncover strategies that organizations use to improve integration of health services and social services.

The Yale researcher completed the interview and shared that in May, they will follow up with an online survey to ask about how Senior Services connected with other organizations that serve older adults. No client personal information will be shared for the study.

According to a fact sheet provided by the Yale University School of Public Health, the purpose of the study is to acknowledge that older adults with complex health needs often require

support from different types of organizations, including health care providers, social services agencies and other supports.

The university is seeking more information on the ways organizations coordinate among themselves to care for older adults. This study aims to create organizational network maps to summarize the connections between organizations in different communities.

Senior Services of Will County has been a regular provider of care coordination, health screenings, classes to educate seniors about potential scams, fall prevention, nutrition, exercise and even social activities.

It provides caregiver assistance and recently added a new program, Safe at Home, which helps seniors with simple home maintenance issues to keep them safe and healthy in their residence.

The Cancer Support Center annually awards community partners with the Richard K. Desser, M.D., Spirit of Life Award to acknowledge their commitment to the integration of psychosocial wellness care within cancer treatment.

During Fine’s long tenure at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, she has made significant contributions in ensuring a successful partnership between the center and Ingalls Memorial Hospital.

Fine coordinates all the cancerrelated programming facilitated by Ingalls Memorial Hospital’s staff, oversaw the success of the US TOO Prostate group that has been well-attended for seven years and orchestrat-

ed the combined marketing initiatives between the center and Ingalls Memorial Hospital.

JOLIET – The Will County Health Department’s Better Birth Outcomes program is designed to help pregnant women at risk for complications.

Qualifying conditions would include having a medical condition (diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, etc), smoking/vaping, being under or overweight, under 15 or over 40 years of age, a victim of domestic violence, homeless or in temporary housing, and other factors as well.

The first step is for these expectant mothers to know that the Better Birth Outcomes program is available to them.

Every pregnant woman who participates in the Will County Health Department’s Women, Infants, and Children Food and Nutrition Service program fills out a questionnaire to see if any qualifying conditions apply.

Morris Hospital representatives showcase quality initiative at Illinois State Capitol The HERALD-NEWS SPRINGFIELD – On April 5 in the Illinois State Capitol, representatives from Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers displayed a new quality improvement initiative called Rhythm of Our Youth that identifies area high school students who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death by identifying those who may have existing cardiac abnormalities.

Morris Hospital’s Cardiovascular Services and Education Director Jori Christensen and 2 South Registered Nurse Brenda Walsh were among more than 100 hospital and health system representatives from across Illinois who discussed with legislators their innovative, practical and collaborative approaches to improve care during the Illinois Health and Hospital Association’s Quality Advocacy Showcase.

With a focus on early detection, Morris Hospital has screened more than 3,000 area high school students for cardiac abnormalities since last August through a simple electrocardiogram test conducted on site at the schools.

The program is a $130,000 investment supported through gifts to the Morris Hospital Auxiliary and Foundation.

For the patients, families and communities Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers serves, the project is intended to save lives and is free to families and schools.

IHA’s Quality Advocacy Showcase, in its second year, is designed to visually demonstrate the often overlooked and underreported work of physicians, nurses, quality improvement leaders and hospital administrators to develop solutions to improve care.

With a pair of hand weights, you can keep your biceps, triceps, pectorals and even your abs strong and toned. Resistance bands are another way to maintain strength and range of motion.

An exercise ball is an excellent workout tool. Hold it above your head and, as you engage your stomach muscles, slowly rotate from left to right and back again. Lift the ball above your head and slowly lower it, again engaging your abdominals. Hold the ball above your head, once again engaging your abs, and perform slight tilts to the points of the compass.

With all of these, the idea is to start slow and gradually build up repetitions. Stop if you feel any pain. And be sure to drink water and stay hydrated.

Is there a senior citizen center in your area? Many of them have exercise and yoga classes that can be adapted for someone using a wheelchair. Some even have sports teams that will make room for a rolling athlete.

A challenge for all of us as we get older is social isolation. A group activity can help you feel connected, which will raise your spirits and keep you motivated.

Dear Doctors: Can you give me some ideas on how to lose weight while using a wheelchair? I’m 66 and need a wheelchair to get around. When the distance is short enough, I use crutches. I’m on a tight budget, but try to work out as much as I can, with very little results. I’m getting depressed because nothing seems to work.

Dear Reader: One look at the multibillion-dollar weight-loss industry, and it’s clear staying fit is difficult for many of us.

And while limited mobility certainly adds to the challenge, with creativity and determination, you can win this battle.

When you use a wheelchair, it’s particularly important to get fit and to maintain a healthy weight. Even a few excess pounds can make it more difficult to get into and out of a wheelchair. In that same vein, you need your shoulders, arms and abs to remain strong so you can easily move into and out of the chair, and to prevent injury as you do so.

Let’s start with what you eat. Focus on a diet made up of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, dairy products, healthy fats, legumes, whole grains and leafy greens. Limit added sugars, and cut out empty calories such as sodas and processed snack foods. The key here is to adjust your diet to your level of physical activity.

One tool that really works (and takes a bit of courage to do honestly) is keeping a food diary. Even if just for one week, write down everything that passes your lips. The details will jolt you into awareness and, quite possibly, motivate you to make some changes.

As for exercise, the days of the sedentary wheelchair-user are over. There are several

In bridge, when a player makes an error, he hopes to learn from it and get it right next time. We are looking at advancing partner’s takeout double. Too many of my students make a simple bid in a suit whatever their point-count and expect partner to be psychic.

Look at the South hand. West opens one club, North doubles, and East passes -- what should South do?

A simple bid in a suit (here, one spade) shows 0-8 points, and a single jump (to two spades) promises 9-11 points. So, does it follow that with 12-14 points, South would bid three spades?

Of course not! With 12 points or more, South cue-bids two clubs.

This is totally artificial. Afterward, each player shows suits, and with luck a good fit will be found. Here, North rebids two hearts, South bids two spades (or now jumps to three spades), and North raises to four spades.

West cashes two top clubs, then shifts to a heart. What happens after that?

Declarer must try to avoid two trump losers. Since West is highly likely to have the spade king, South should start by cashing his spade ace.

When the king drops, declarer can bring home an overtrick. However, if neither the king nor the jack appears, declarer crosses to dummy with a diamond and plays a spade toward his queen. No guesswork is needed.

What would a jump to three spades after partner’s double show?
