Old Central School – Lockport Lockport is a town rich in history with the first settlers arriving in the area in 1830. Soon after settlers arrived, school classes began in a log cabin on what is now Division Street, near Grandview Avenue.

In 1857, a three-story stone schoolhouse, designed by architect Julius Scheibe, was erected on the Public Square in town. This stone building was the first village schoolhouse and was built from limestone quarried locally and boasted a large four-sided clock tower on its roof.

The first graduation commencement at the school was held in June 1888, with seven graduates. A large fire destroyed the school building on Aug. 10, 1895, and classes were held in nearby churches and other buildings until a new public structure was erected.

The schoolhouse was replaced the following year with a handsome three-story Romanesque Revival structure on the same site. The new school building was built using native limestone quarried locally by architect John H. Barnes of Joliet.

Buildings of the Romanesque Revival style are most easily indentified by their qualities, such as pronounced round arches, cavernous entryways, window openings and heavy stone or brick construction.

Most have round towers with conical roofs, squat columns and decorative plaques with intricate or interlacing patterns. The Romanesque style especially was suited to churches, courthouses, schools, university buildings, prisons, train stations and other public buildings.

Locally, the Romanesque Revival style can be seen in the work of architect John H. Barnes. Barnes graduated from the University of Illinois in 1888 and began his career in Colorado.

After working out west, John Barnes arrived in Joliet in the early 1890s.

Barnes was typical of many new architects of the era in that he was probably more of a self-taught builder than a pro-

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When it comes to making sustainable change at Joliet Public Schools District 86, the question for its superintendent is how to make goals into reality.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse has some new goals in mind and is inviting many stakeholders to shape them or offer others as the district seeks to overcome challenges in early childhood literacy, bilingual education, cultural proficiency and more.

During the past month, Rouse shared ideas about how to improve those areas with the board and dis-

trict advisory council, and during last week’s community chat session.

The district can’t do the work on its own, she said.

“We only have the students during the day. They go home. We need partnerships with home, partnerships with the community,” Rouse said.

In her first year as the new superintendent, Rouse said she has pushed for what she called the theme of HOPE – humor, optimism, perspective, expectation – in the district. There’s also been new initiatives to increase parental and community involvement, such as the quarterly community chats and Parents as Tutors pilot program.

Rouse seeks tighter integration of goals in the district’s three-year

strategic plan, which sets internal benchmarks for student achievement, student services, technology, human resources, and parental and community relations.

She also seeks more “fidelity of implementation,” or stronger adherence to goals.

“We have some really great tools.

We don’t have really solid fidelity toward implementation of those tools,” she said.

That concept will help with addressing critical areas such as early childhood literacy. Rouse said the data at the beginning of the school year was

‘A fantastic role model for Bolingbrook’ Joann Robinson helped give youth the second chance they needed

BOLINGBROOK – Joann Robinson had a heart for at-risk youth.

The Bolingbrook woman founded a six-week community training program to give a second chance to kids ages 12 to 18 who had gotten in legal trouble, said Darryl Anderson of Wisconsin, Joann’s brother.

“Basically, she set out to provide community service and have young people’s records expunged,” Darryl said. “They would get in trouble with the law and she would basically go in through the courts – it was run through the Will County court system and DuPage County.”

Darryl said Joann worked with the kids to ensure they could go forward with their lives. Joann ran the program for 17 years.

“She would tutor them, rehabilitate them and teach them basic skills,” Darryl said. “Then she would go before the court and have their cases dismissed. Before that she ran a boot camp ministry. She did this all on her own.”

Born and raised in Chicago, Joann moved to Bolingbrook in 1977. As she saw kids in the community getting into trouble, Joann started Spiritual Boot Camp Soldiers for children ages 5 to 12. She took that program further in 1999 by founding H.E.A.R.T. According to the H.E.A.R.T. website, the program meets every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evening at the new Village of Bolingbrook Community Center. Its students are trained in juvenile law and its consequences, as well as social and life skills. The program also offers anger management classes.

H.E.A.R.T is supported with in-kind donations from the village of Bolingbrook, DuPage Township, public donations and private contributions, its website stated. With a tagline of, “Keep the cuffs off the kids,” Joann apparently did just that.

“She graduated over 3,000 students from this program,” Darryl said.

As she saw kids in the community getting into trouble, Joann Robinson of Bolingbrook started Spiritual Boot Camp Soldiers for children ages 5 to 12. She took that program further in 1999 by founding H.E.A.R.T. “She kept in contact with each one of those students. Each year, those kids

received a handwritten birthday card from Joann Robinson.”

Yolanda Jamison of Bolingbrook said Joann’s program helped her son.

What really impressed Yolanda was the level of self-respect she instilled in the students.

Whether they attended her meetings or court – and Joann accompanied her students to all their court appearances, Yolanda said – the students had to dress the part.

For instance, boys had to wear dress shirts, pants and shoes, as well as ties.

“She was a fantastic lady,” Yolanda said. “She was a fantastic role model for Bolingbrook.”

According to the H.E.A.R.T. website, Joann hosted an award-winning cable show known as “From the Heart Show” that aired on channel six in Bolingbrook.

Joann also was awarded the John F. Whiteside lifetime achievement award from the Will County Sheriff’s Department and the Seekers of Justice Award from the Black Bar Association.

She was voted Citizen of the Year

by Mayor Roger Claar and was also honored by the American Association of University Women.

In 2005 and 2006, she received the AT&T Beyond the Call award and was awarded Female Citizen of the Year by DuPage Township. She was honored by the DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church for her work with at-risk youth, as well.

Darryl said Joann also was a devout Baptist. She had one daughter – LaShonda Brinkley of Tennessee – and seven grandchildren. Joann was 60 when she died April 11. It was her love for kids that kept her going, Darryl said.

“Joann just had a soft heart for kids and she wanted to keep youth out of trouble,” Darryl said.

Olympic swimmer leads clinics for kids

aortiz@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Olympic gold medalist swimmer Tyler Clary was at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield on Sunday to instruct a pair of swimming clinics for kids.

The clinics were part of the Fitter & Faster Swim Tour, which hosts clinics all over the country with professional swimmers.

Clary won gold in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and has won medals in multiple major international competitions.

Along with former University of Michigan swimmer and 200-meter medley relay world record holder Ali DeLoof, Clary and the Fitter & Faster program want to help inspire the next generation of American swimmers.

Since the sport has grown in popularity in recent years, especially around the Olympics, he wants to see it continue to grow and help maintain the deep U.S. talent.

“A lot of it comes down to programs

like this that’s feeding back into the culture that we’ve created in American swimming,” Clary said. “And that’s ultimately going to make it better down the road.”

About 200 kids of all ages participated. The 11 and younger group learned the essentials of fast freestyle, and the 12 and older group practiced underwater dolphin kicking and butterfly swimming technique. The kids also were able to participate in a Q&A session with the instructors and get items autographed by their instructors.

Clary has been traveling around the country participating in the clinics now that he’s retired from professional swimming. Even though he’s now trying a career as a professional race car driver, he still is making time to teach young people about the sport he loves.

“It’s definitely something that’s entertaining,” Clary said. “It’s fun for me to figure out what relates to the next generation of swimmers, and it’s satisfying for me to go through that process and watch younger swimmers get better at an enhanced rate.”

LOCAL BRIEF No one hurt in two fires Saturday night in Channahon

CHANNAHON – The Channahon Fire Protection District responded Saturday night to two separate fires, but no one was reported injured.

Lt. Matt Skole confirmed that at 6:12 p.m., the department received multiple calls of a fire in the 23300 block of Ivy Lane, which was at a vacant unit. The fire was contained at that unit, but the one next door sustained fire and water damage, although that unit’s occupants

were not present at the time. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

The second fire was reported at 7:53 p.m. at another home in the 24000 block of Lakeview Drive. The home was occupied at the time, but all occupant escaped. That fire was brought under control in about an hour.

The causes for both fires remain undetermined and are under investigation. No estimated cost of damages was available.

The shoes will then be redistributed to a network of microenterprise partners in those developing nations, according to a news release from TMS. Several years ago I was on a safari in Africa, and one of the things that was most notable was that people walked everywhere. We were told by our guide that it’s not unusual to walk 5 or 10 miles every day just to catch a bus to get to a job.

Many Africans wore sandals that were made out of tire retreads; it was typical footwear for them.

When I think of all the pairs of tennis shoes I have in my closet that I consider “worn out,” well, it’s kind of embarrassing.

On the American end of this service project, if the drive can collect another 1,000 pairs of shoes by May 19, it will receive money from Funds2Org, which will pay to bring

in a Holocaust speaker for students in eighth grade next year during their Holocaust unit, which is so dear to Etta’s heart.

Anyone is welcome to donate new or gently used shoes to this project by dropping them off at Troy Middle School, 5800 W. Theodore St. in Plainfield, at the main office, Etta said. The office is open on school days until 3:30 p.m.

While they’re a bit short of their goal of 1,500 shoes, Etta is excited about the way the shoe drive is going so far.

“We just need the community to help out with the rest,” she said.

Helping people around the world is important to Etta, but she’s also looking forward to bringing in a Holocaust speaker for her classmates next year. ”I think it’s important people know what the Holocaust is; people should be educated about it,” she said. “We need to preserve the memories; many of the survivors won’t be here any longer.”

There are seemingly countless career opportunities for those who elect to pursue Digital Audio Recording Arts (DARA) at the University of St. Francis.

Session musician, record producer, audio engineer, independent label owner, music publisher, recording studio owner and disc jockey are just some of the dozens of potential career paths for DARA students.

“We focus on our students being musicians, technicians and music industry entrepreneurs because no one in the industry is going to make a living without those three skills,” said program director Jeff Jaskowiak. “Our blending of the coursework really sets us apart. We develop artists who learn how to capture what they’re doing, how to mix it and present it, and to figure out how to monetize it.”

DARA students at the University of St. Francis will be musically competitive, perceptive professionals who acquire the technical knowledge to excel in today’s

digitally based music production industry.

Thanks to the program’s thoroughness, students are able to acquire the knowledge, principles and practices of engineering methodology and music production.

Through 24/7 access to the lab, which is second to none, “Students can create all the time,” said Jaskowiak. “No other school offers that.”

Like studying in any field, DARA students want to ultimately graduate and enter the competitive working world capable of finding a job that matches what they truly want to do. DARA students will learn the proficiencies to succeed in turning their artistry into a viable and sustainable business and to find work in the music industry. They will leave the university with a prolific portfolio of work, projects and compositions and be equipped for success as a music industry entrepreneur.

“The cool thing about our program is we just started in 2010 and we’ve grown every year,” Jaskowiak said. “If you envision yourself in music, we might be the perfect place for you.”

PLAINFIELD – Seventh-grade Troy Middle School student Etta Sklar has always been interested in Holocaust education, so it wasn’t too difficult to come up with a community service project for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah celebration.

In Jewish tradition, a young girl becomes a Bat Mitzvah when she comes of age at 13 years old; for young men, it’s called Bar Mitzvah. It means they are now accountable for their actions.

Part of the Bat Mitzvah celebration includes directing a community service project. Etta got together with TMS Assistant Principal Tyler Haymond, and he suggested working with Funds2Orgs, which helps impoverished people to start and maintain businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa.

Together they came up with a shoe drive that would benefit the school, involve the community and make a difference in the lives of people in need.

The three-fold project is over and above what is required, but Etta is very excited about helping and involving so many people.

Continued from page 8 urban forest,” Rita Renwick from the city’s Tree Board told students. “Actually, where we live we have a forest all around us. You’ve seen the trees when you walk down the street. They’re in the yards and in the parkway.”

City Manager Jim Hock told the students that Joliet is in the process of planting 10,000 trees over 10 years in parkways to replace ash trees infested by the emerald ash borer.

Principal Pam George told the students that a red oak tree planted outside the school would be a reminder of their days at Pershing in the years to come.

“You know that when you pass this tree that you are planting today that you were part of something special,” George told the students.

The students read poems and essays as well as reported their findings on the value of trees.

“I believe that we should save the trees because they provide oxygen for us and homes for animals,” Amaya Lee said, as she joined other third-graders who read essays about the importance of trees.

Students also received seedlings of hemlock, white pine and swamp white oak trees donated by Arbor Tek Services, a Joliet landscaping company.

“The white pines can get up to 110 feet tall,” city arborist Jim Teiber told the students, some of whom oohed and aahed in response.

The city picks a school each year for its Arbor Day celebration as a way to emphasize the value of trees.

“That’s what we do,” George told the students, “in making sure that our city is beautiful today and beautiful going into your future.”

scary, as it showed close to 40 percent of kindergartners knowing fewer than five letters.

But the work being done with Fundations, a program that focuses on letters and their sounds, and potentially adding paraprofessionals at the kindergarten level for additional support, will help make a difference in student achievement, she said.

This summer, district leaders will begin work in the area of cultural competence and proficiency, Rouse said.

The district’s diversity is its strength, and improving cultural proficiency, she said, will help continue to build more trust and inclusiveness, and address issues with bullying and chronic student absenteeism.

Although the district has high parental involvement, Rouse said she would like to see a shift toward engagement, where parents are doing more than simply attending events or activities.

“What does that look like? And that’s going to look different at different schools. … We need to really move past involvement to engagement and that

will help shift a lot, I think, for some of our schools,” she said.

Some changes can be small but make a huge difference. Rouse asked the district advisory council what community engagement and cultural proficiency would look like – whether that would mean more community members reading to students or greeting students at the start of the school day with highfives and a smile.

“The difference that can make in a child’s day is profound,” she said.

The district has partnerships with many organizations, and at last week’s community chat, it may have forged a new one as Michael Clark, Joliet branch president for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, visited to ask questions about the district and how the NAACP could get involved.

The school year is almost over and summer is coming, but Rouse said that doesn’t mean the district gets “to stop breathing” and that a lot of planning for next year will take place.

“We need all of you to stay involved,” she said to the district advisory council.

“We need all of you to stay on the notion of what are the opportunities that we can bring together?”

Bills, suit target quarries taking demolition waste

SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers and environmentalists from parts of Illinois that rely on groundwater want tougher monitoring of porous rock quarries that are being “reclaimed” by filling them with construction waste, saying they want to regulate them to make sure drinking water doesn’t become contaminated with toxins.

On the other side are road builders, engineers and others in the construction business, who argue that Illinois has sufficient quarry regulations and additional testing would be too expensive.

The proposed rules appear stymied this spring. But Attorney General Lisa Madigan is in court, trying to force previously dismissed groundwater monitoring on the quarries. She argued in a state appellate court brief that testing underground aquifers is necessary to protect drinking water “from the ongoing threat posed by the placement of

“That’s the concern of everyone who uses water nearby quarries: that we could be in a situation like that.”

Eighteen organizations – which have made $6 million in political contributions in the past decade – have lined up against the measure. More than once, the Pollution Control Board has rejected groundwater monitoring, the decision Madigan is contesting.

Legislation similar to McDermed’s, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Emily McAsey of Lockport, was shunted into a subcommittee for review last week, substantially weakening its chances for

passage before the Legislature adjourns May 31. The Sierra Club and other key environmental groups support the plan.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency calls it “clean construction-demolition debris.” The idea is that concrete free of steel reinforcement bars, rock, stone, brick and asphalt from sites where buildings are going up or being razed is “clean” and can be dumped in spent rock quarries. Requirements that professionals examine the waste have been put in place in the past decade, but decades of unregulated dumping occurred before that.

McAsey’s and McDermed’s home, Will County, has nine quarries with EPA permits to handle demolition waste, with up to nine more that could be soon, said Brent Hassert, a former Republican lawmaker who lobbies for the county.

The Illinois EPA lists 34 EPA-permitted construction-debris quarries, but when The Associated Press asked the agency for the sites handling the most demolition waste, spokeswoman Kim

Biggs said the top three are in Lyons, in Cook County; and two Kane County sites, in South Elgin and Bartlett. None is on the agency’s list. Biggs then said the list is incomplete and would be removed until it’s corrected.

Illinois has the most stringent rules for quarry reclamation in the nation, according to Dan Eichholz, president of the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers. The waste material must come from a site where previous land use has been determined and verified that it’s not part of a toxic-cleanup project. A professional engineer or geologist must test the soil at the site and determine that contaminants do not exceed allowed levels. At the quarry, a detector is used to check for suspicious odors.

The professionals used in the screening process are hired by the landowner or hauler, Eichholz said, but “repercussions are severe” if they don’t comply.

And the receiving site can reject any dump truck arriving with waste.

“Any load that’s suspicious has to be rejected,” Eichholz said.

National Weather Service trained spotters in the Mount Vernon area reported seeing creeks and streams starting to come out of their banks.

Lawmakers seal deal on $1T plan government-wide funding bill

WASHINGTON – Top Capitol Hill negotiators reached a hard-won agreement on a huge $1 trillion-plus spending bill that would fund the day-to-day operations of virtually every federal agency through September, aides said Sunday night. Details of the agreement were expected to be made public Sunday night, said aides to lawmakers involved in weeks of negotiations.

The House and Senate had until midnight Friday to pass a measure to avert a government shutdown.

The catchall spending bill would be the first major piece of bipartisan legislation to advance during President Donald Trump’s short tenure in the White House. It denies Trump a win on his oft-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but gives him a $15 billion down payment on his request to strengthen the military.

It also rejects White House budget director Mick Mulvaney’s proposals to cut popular programs such as funding medical research and community development grants and adds $1.5 billion for border security measures such as additional detention beds.

Most of the core decisions about agency budgets had been worked out, but unrelated policy issues – such as a Democratic request to help the cash-strapped government of Puerto Rico with its Medicaid burden – were among the final holdups.

The aides required anonymity because they were not allowed to speak about the agreement by name.

Democrats have denied Trump a big-picture win on obtaining an initial down payment for his oft-promised border wall with Mexico,

while anti-abortion lawmakers didn’t even attempt to use the must-pass measure to try to cut off federal money for Planned Parenthood.

Details were being closely held ahead of an agreement, but Trump and Capitol Hill defense hawks procured a $15 billion infusion of cash for Pentagon readiness and won funding for other border security accounts, such as detention beds for people entering the country illegally.

Democrats praised a $2 billion funding increase for the National Institutes of Health – rejecting the steep cuts proposed by Trump – as well as additional funding to combat opioid abuse, fund Pell Grants for summer school and additional transit funding. A provision extending health care for 22,000 retired Appalachian coal miners and their families was on track to provide permanent health benefits, a priority of Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and other Appalachia region lawmakers.

Democratic votes will be needed to pass the measure, so even though Republicans control both the White House and Congress, Democrats have been actively involved in the talks, which appear headed to produce a lowest-common-denominator measure that won’t look too much different than the deal that could have been struck on President Barack Obama’s watch last year.

Republicans had pressed for policy wins with so-called riders related to other abortion-related issues and blocking environmental regulations such as Obama’s sweeping expansion of the Clean Water Act. They also hoped to chuck new financial rules. But Democrats pushed back and were hopeful that the measure would not contain many items they deemed “poison pills.”

As number of adoptions drops, many U.S. agencies face strains

The Associated Press NEW YORK – For legions of Americans craving a chance to adopt children, a confluence of daunting trends makes this an especially distressing time.

The overall number of U.S. adoptions has dropped significantly in recent years, straining the viability of many adoption agencies and drawing some into conduct that authorities describe as unethical or worse. Would-be adoptive parents confront the specter of long waiting times and high fees. And many face pressure to spend lavishly on self-promotional advertising if they want to compete for a chance to adopt an infant.

Chuck Johnson, CEO of the National Council for Adoption, estimates that 1 million families are trying to adopt at any given time.

“No matter where they go, unless they’re super lucky, they’re going to be in for a long wait,” Johnson said.

“They’re going to be in a slow, painful process for foster care or in this massive competition for the limited number of healthy infants – and that’s where the situation is ripe for fraud. There are so many families who want to adopt, and so few options for them.”

Inevitably, some of the people desperate to adopt fall victim to scams. In March, a woman from Carolina Beach, North Carolina, was accused of using the internet to fleece a dozen would-be adoptive parents. In 2015, a Texas woman was sentenced to five years in federal prison for defrauding a Kansas couple

out of $22,225; she falsely claimed she was pregnant and wanted to put her twins up for adoption.

In the absence of comprehensive federal figures, Johnson’s council, which represents more than 120 adoption agencies, periodically tries to tally the total number of adoptions in the U.S. Its latest count, released in February, showed a 17 percent drop from 133,737 adoptions in 2007 to 110,373 in 2014.

Most of the decline was because of a sharp decrease in the number of international adoptions; the number of infant adoptions remained relatively stable at about 18,000, as did adoptions out of foster care at about 50,000.

Thousands of clients seeking to adopt have been buffeted recently by the downfall of their agencies, in some cases after having paid many thousands of dollars over several years.

The State Department, alleging extensive improprieties in handling international adoptions, shut down Ohiobased European Adoption Consultants in December. It operated in a dozen foreign countries.

A few weeks later, a domestic-adoption agency licensed in eight states, the Independent Adoption Center, declared bankruptcy, leaving more than 3,000 clients in the lurch. The California-based agency, which boasted of arranging more than 4,000 adoptions over a 34year history, blamed the bankruptcy on “societal changes” that increased the number of parents seeking to adopt domestically while shrinking the pool of expectant mothers open to having their babies adopted.

Among the affected clients were Nicole and Don Davis of Lake Tapps, Washington, who said they had been working with the adoption center for four years at a cost of about $20,000.

“Honestly, I was stunned,” Nicole Davis said of the bankruptcy news. “For the first few weeks, I was bouncing between frustration and anger and crying all the time.”

She recalled a Super Bowl party in February with friends who brought their infants. “It was a gratifying day to hold the babies ... but at the same time it was devastating,” she wrote in her blog. “I actually cried the whole way home.”

Another couple, newlyweds Christopher Koontz and Bobby Duong of Long Beach, California, said they’d paid the agency about $16,000 over nearly two years, and right up until the bankruptcy were still being urged to spend more on advertising to promote themselves on social media. The extent of any reimbursement is uncertain.

“Several of our close friends, family members and co-workers were rooting for us to adopt – it felt shameful to tell them what happened,” Duong said.

Koontz, a city planner for Long Beach, said he and Duong have approached another agency to pursue their quest for a child, but he finds himself disillusioned about the adoption business.

“It’s very much run like a time-share presentation,” he said. “It’s a high pressure sales pitch, and then as soon as you cut the check it’s like you’re dealing with a completely different group

of people.”

Josh Christian, a lawyer in Greenville, South Carolina, was a client of European Adoption Consultants. He estimates that he and his wife ended out paying $10,000 extra to complete the adoptions of two sisters from Uganda, who had to spend more time in an orphanage because of the agency’s shutdown.

Only after the State Department action did Christian learn that there were long-simmering problems with EAC. He suggested there should be some sort of national database through which would-be adoptive parents could access information of that nature.

EAC was accused by the State Department of charging excessively high fees, misrepresenting information about children, and other improprieties. The agency said it considered the shutdown unwarranted and was considering an appeal.

Many agencies specializing in international adoptions have closed in recent years, and others have struggled, as the number of foreign children adopted

by Americans has plunged. The latest federal figures, for the 2016 fiscal year, reported 5,372 adoptions from abroad, down more than 76 percent from the high of 22,884 in 2004.

The State Department says factors out of its control are responsible for most of the decline – including an increase in domestic adoptions in China, Russia’s suspension of adoptions by Americans, and corruption scandals that shut down international adoptions in several countries.

10 killed by storms and flooding in South and Midwest The ASSOCIATED PRESS CANTON, Texas – At least 10 people have been killed by tornadoes or flooding in the South and Midwest by a storm that also dumped a rare late-season blizzard in western Kansas on Sunday.

Tornadoes hit several small towns in East Texas, killing four people. Three people were killed by flooding and winds in Arkansas, with officials saying two more people are missing. Rushing water swept away a car, drowning a woman in Missouri; and a death was reported in Sunday morning storms that raked Mississippi.

near Hazelgreen, Missouri, and officials expected it would be at least a day before the highway reopened. Interstate 70 in western Kansas was closed because crews were waiting for snow falling at 3 to 4 inches an hour being blown by 35 mph winds to subside.

An Arkansas volunteer fire department chief was killed while working during storms in north-central Arkansas, state police said.

Cove Creek/Pearson Fire Chief Doug Decker died shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday after being struck by a vehicle while checking water levels on Highway 25 near Quitman, about 40 miles north of Little Rock, Trooper Liz Chapman said.

It wasn’t known if he will be included as a storm-related death, she said.

Rescuers in northwest Arkansas continued Sunday to look for an 18-monthold girl and a 4-year-old boy who were in a vehicle swept off a bridge by floodwaters in Hindsville, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.

In northwest Arkansas, a 10-year-old girl drowned in Springdale and the body of a woman who disappeared riding an inner tube Saturday was found in a creek in Eureka Springs. Also, a 65-yearold woman in DeWitt in the eastern part of the state was struck and killed in her home by a falling tree, officials said.

In Texas, search teams were going

door to door Sunday after the tornadoes the day before flattened homes, uprooted trees and flipped several pickup trucks at a Dodge dealership in Canton.

“It is heartbreaking and upsetting to say the least,” Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett told reporters at a news conference Sunday morning.

The storms cut a path of destruction 35 miles long and 15 miles wide in Van Zandt County, Everett said. The largely rural area is about 50 miles east of Dallas.

The National Weather Service found evidence of four tornadoes with one twister possibly on the ground for 50 miles.

Dash of local flavor makes NFL Draft that much sweeter VIEWS Dick Goss The NFL draft is a special time of the year.

Thirty-five years ago, in 1982, when the draft began early in the morning on a weekday, my wife woke me as I had requested – I assumed because the draft was starting.

“No, my water broke,” she said.

“We’re going to the hospital.” Our daughter, Sarah, was born later that day, 11 days early – April 27, 1982. It doesn’t get more special than that.

Meanwhile, back to the draft, 2017.

Some NFL observers have said the pre-draft hoopla, the mock drafts and the draft itself have become so big that they constitute a virtual separate season.

However, the draft gets a little sweeter whenever we have Joliet-area players who are involved. This year, Lemont graduate Ethan Pocic was selected in the second round, No. 58 overall, by the Seattle Seahawks.

That was especially impressive because Pocic is not a quarterback, wide receiver, left tackle, tight end, linebacker, edge, defensive lineman, corner or safety. He does not play a position over which the scouts tend to drool.

In his last two seasons at LSU, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Pocic played center. Even the absolute best at that position often are not first- or second-round picks.

Pocic, however, is more than “just a center.” He played all five offensive line positions at one time or another at LSU, and the Seahawks likely will make use of that versatility. Or, in the least, they know they have a lineman coming in whom they can try at dif-

There naturally will be significant competition for playing time in the 49ers’ backfield, as there was in Denver, but Bibbs should be ready to step in and contribute if and when his number is called.

THE FEJEDELEM STORY

With this being draft time, I was thinking about Clayton Fejedelem and how his story – going from Lemont to NAIA football to the Big Ten to the NFL – keeps getting better.

The Lemont graduate played two seasons in the defensive secondary for coach Mike Feminis at Saint Xavier, then transferred to Illinois as a walk-on. He became one of the Big Ten’s leading tacklers from his safety position, was mentioned on all-conference teams and showed enough to be drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round last year.

Fejedelem signed a four-year contract with the Bengals and appeared in 16 games as a rookie. He made 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, three of which came in the Nov. 27 game against the division rival

The Joliet-area connection with the University of Minnesota football team continues.

Now, Providence outside linebacker Mariano SoriMarin, who will be a senior in the fall, has committed to Minnesota. He will be a player to watch in the area as next season unfolds.

Of course, Lincoln-Way East defensive end Devin O’Rourke, the highest-rated defensive prospect in the area entering next season, recently committed to play in the Big Ten at Northwestern.

BASEBALL NOTES

• Left-handed pitcher Tyler Jay (Lemont), the sixth player selected when the Minnesota Twins chose him in the first round of the 2015 draft, had been groomed as a starting pitcher earlier in his minor league career. However, the Twins’ brass has reconsidered and reportedly is converting him back into a reliever, at least for the time being.

Jay, you will recall, excelled as a reliever at Illinois.

In fact, he was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year in 2015.

Last season at Single-A Advanced Fort Myers and Double-A Chattanooga, he made 15 starts among 18 appearances and was 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA. He struck out 77 and walked 26 in 832/3 innings.

“Nothing is permanent in the prospect development process, but this is a collaborative decision to put Tyler in the best situation for success,” Twins vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliff told MLB.com.

• Left-hander Dietrich Enns (Lincoln-Way East), a Yankees’ farmhand, picked up where he left off last season with two outstanding starts for Triple-A Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre. He is 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA. In 11 innings, he has allowed four hits and three walks while striking out eight. However, he currently is on the seven-day disabled list. His most recent start was April 14.

• First baseman Sam Travis (Providence), who missed much of last season with a torn ACL, is off to a relatively slow start with the bat for the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate at Pawtucket. He entered Sunday hitting .232 (13 for 56) with three doubles and a home run. However, he was 5 for 11 in his last three games.

Track teams find positives at Warriors Invite

cherron@shawmedia.com A year ago the boys track and field teams from Joliet West, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way West and Providence Catholic combined to advance only seven athletes in eight events to the IHSA finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

With three of those individuals graduating in 2016, prospects for the current season may not have looked that upbeat based on the number of top performers who were returning.

But as the Tigers, Knights, Warriors and Celtics all demonstrated at Friday’s Lincoln-Way West Warriors Invite, the track programs at the their schools are putting together what they hope turns out to be even better seasons.

Ranking among the top 20 in the state are Lincoln-Way West’s Evan Mitchell in the 3,200-meter run, Providence’s Gavin Jaime in the 400 and Joliet West’s Omari Ferguson in the 100.

The Tigers won five titles at Friday’s meet, including all four relays, as well as a first from Daelin Lockman in high jump. Max Ebong started off three of the relays and Jabari Harris, Danta Rooks, Anthony Sain and Ferguson each ran in two of the them.

“We had a good day,” Tigers coach Jason Aubry said of his team’s performance. “This is a good time to peak since we’re coming to the end of the season and that’s what our workouts are geared to do. And we were without a top runner, Daylen Foster, who we rested today.

“One of the things that we’re excited about is that we’re scoring points everywhere, not just from one group. We’re scoring points with distance, sprints, jumps and throws, so it’s good to bring it all together. The coolest thing about this is that they’re all fighting for each other.”

Just as Aubry hopes his program’s success this season rolls into the fall on the football field. Providence coach Mark Coglianese has long capitalized on being able to coach track & field in the spring and then also coach football in the fall.

The veteran Celtics coach was missing much of his squad on Friday due to prom, but he still received several good performances, such as the one turned in by junior Gavin Jaime, who easily won the 400 and the 200, while also tying for second place in pole vault. Lucas Weaver, who took eighth in pole vault last year, is one of the area’s returning all-staters.

“We started out indoors real well by winning the Catholic League and the big ICOPs meet,” Coglianese said.

“With this being prom, we were missing a lot. But we have some good core guys and obviously Gavin is the key cog. He’s just so smooth and works hard.

“We’re pretty solid in the field events and also have good sprints and middle distance. In conference we try to score in all events and dominate in some. We have great leadership. The guys work hard, but we have fun at practices and meets. We have a lot of football players and they realize that running track is also going to help them in the fall.”

Another returning all-stater who hopes to finish his career on a good note is Lincoln-Way West senior Evan Mitchell, who won both the 800 and the 1,600 Friday. As a junior, he took fourth in the 3,200 in Class 2A and also won medals the last two years in cross country.

While the Warriors are moving up to Class 3A this year, they also have a bigger squad to work with. One disappointing aspect for Mitchell is that junior Ryan Taylor, who also qualified for

state in the 3,200 last year, has been suffering through some injury problems lately.

“Evan ran sub-2:00 today for the first time and ran a sub-4:30 and that’s a big step,” Warriors coach Jason Van Swol.

“He wants to run the two-mile and being a well-rounded runner is always important. We broke a couple of records today, including Casey Gervase in the 400.

“We also have a lot of great young talent and some great talent from Central.

The thing I’m so proud of from these guys is that they’ve stepped into gaps. If they see that no one is competing in an event, even if they’re not comfortable with it, they go for it and find success.

We’ve got a lot of athletes who are balancing a lot of things and are doing it wonderfully.”

Central got wins from Nate Rittenbacher in both the 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles and from Thomas Riley in the pole vault to help them capture top honors.

With several athletes coming over from Lincoln-Way East, the Knights have become much stronger this season, and coach Dustin Waddell likes how his team has been performing.

“The guys were determined to persevere and we’re looking at 29 [personal record’s] today,” Waddell said. “And the best part is that it’s not about that first place, but who’s going to get us the points for the fourth, and fifth and sixth.

And when you put that together and get results like this and first as a team and it’s a big shot in the arm for these guys, and they deserve it.

“The quality that I like is hard work.

These guys come in each day and we never lower our expectations of how we’ve got to get it done. These guys are willing to work and to prepare and even when they’re hurting, they’re laughing and smiling, and like ‘Hey, let’s get in there and do it one more time.’ And you don’t get that type of character from a lot of young men.”

Whatever the reason, it was a bad look for all involved. It wasn’t the kid’s fault that the Bears took a risk on him last week, but he had to listen to the abuse as he was shown on the video board sitting in the stands.

As for Bulls fans, they should be booing themselves for selling out the UC game after game to watch a mediocre product. And now that the Bulls are done, note how seamlessly the discussion has turned to whether Dwyane Wade wants to be a Bull again next season. A 41-41 regular season, an eighth seed, a 4-2 series loss to the Celtics and, well, of course you’d want a 35-year-old back. Fingers crossed.

It wouldn’t be a Bears column if hope

didn’t get kidnapped by exasperation.

The Bears were 3-13 last season, and they have plenty of holes in need of filling, which fueled part of the frustration over the Trubisky pick. But let me see if I have this straight: Many of you couldn’t stand Jay Cutler and spent years screaming at the Bears to find a young quarterback. Now that they’ve done what you asked, many of you are upset that they took a young quarterback. I think they call that a pivot in politics.

After taking Trubisky, the Bears started drafting players you never heard of from schools you never heard of, as if to remind all of us that the NFL is one big crapshoot. The who-fromwhere? picks made me smile, not just because it’s fun to say Kutztown University, but because Bears fans had talked so much about the sanctity of the three mid-round picks the team had given to the 49ers to switch first-round spots and grab Trubisky. And now Bears general manager Ryan Pace was inviting the Clampetts family into the mansion.

Kutztown offensive lineman Jordan Morgan, the Bears’ fifth-round pick, may turn into a fine player. Same with the players they took from Ashland University and North Carolina A&T, both of which, like Kutztown, are below

the FBS level.

The beauty and beastliness of the draft is that neither you nor I nor the Bears’ talent appraisers can say with certainty that any of these players will succeed. In the same way, no one knows if Trubisky will be the bust so many people are predicting he’ll be.

What we do know is that Pace is either going to be the hero of heroes in Chicago or he’s not going to be allowed to step foot in this city. There doesn’t seem much room for in between.

That’s why I applauded him after he moved up one spot to choose Trubisky with the No. 2 pick overall. When is the last time the Bears showed that kind of brazenness? People have mentioned the 2009 Cutler trade as being similarly bold, but Cutler was coming off a Pro Bowl season with the Broncos. There’s no comparison in the audacity department.

Part of the anger over the Trubisky pick comes from a strange place. It has to do with fans considering themselves general managers these days. These are people who think only an unfortunate twist of fate separates them from a cushy front-office job and a championship ring on their finger. It’s why, in their eyes, the Bears’ real sin wasn’t so much the choice of Trubisky as it was

the draft picks that they gave up to get him. All we hear now is how important the draft is for an NFL team. It’s considered gospel, and studious fans are its proselytizers.

But put yourself in Pace’s penny loafers. You’ve identified Trubisky as a quarterback who can change the franchise’s fortunes. You’re convinced of it.

So let me understand the logic: Because conventional wisdom says the heart of a team is built through the draft, you shouldn’t do all you can to get the player you think will be great?

The Bears hired Pace to find talent.

He believes he has found a quarterback who might be good enough to lead the franchise to its first Super Bowl title since 1985. If you believe in Pace – and, granted, not everybody does – asking him to play it safe and hold on to a few third-round picks seems not just silly but criminal.

The Bears have made the playoffs once in the past 10 seasons. If that doesn’t call for something different, I don’t know what does. I also don’t know if Trubisky will be a success. I do know I’ll very much enjoy finding out.

RICHMOND, Va. – Joey Logano pulled away after a restart with about 20 laps to go to win the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday at Richmond International Raceway.

Logano, who qualified fifth but had to start 37th after making a transmission change, grabbed the lead from Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski on an earlier restart when Keselowski had to make a defensive move to keep Kyle Busch from passing him on the inside.

“I was driving my guts out out there,” Logano said. “That’s all I had. We won with a car that may not have been a winning car, so that’s something to be very proud of as a team. That means the execution was there and we were able to put ourselves in position to race there hard at the end. Brad was the fastest car. He was so fast.”

Keselowski got stuck behind some slower cars on the restart, letting Logano pull away.

“I think what we needed was about 10

and pulled away while Keselowski and Denny Hamlin dueled for the second position.

Keselowski, who had the dominant car for the second half of the race, held on for second, followed by Hamlin, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kevin Harvick.

“We just didn’t have the speed that the other cars had,” Hamlin said. “We finished right where we should have.”

Ryan Newman, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all took a chance when the rest of the field started making green-flag stop with about 80 laps to go.

The three stayed out hoping for a caution flag that would allow them to get new tires and remain up front.

Johnson eventually pitted, and then he brought about the caution when he side-swiped Earnhardt into the wall in the backstretch, making the gamble pay off for Newman, who was likely to be passed shortly thereafter by the hardcharging Keselowski.

Pole-sitter Matt Kenseth led the first 163 laps, winning Stage 1, and raced in the top 10 all day until a flat tire with 35 laps to go.

Sox fall to Tigers, pull red-hot Garcia

DETROIT – April is in the books for Avisail Garcia, who ended his booming month quietly Sunday with a foul popup and strikeout before leaving with tightness in his left groin in the White Sox’s series-ending 7-3 loss to the Tigers on Sunday at Comerica Park.

Slick conditions on a damp, rainy 48-degree afternoon prompted manager Rick Renteria to pull his right fielder, and get a case filed for American League Player of the Month. The idea was to have Garcia ready for the first day of May when the Sox open a fourgame series Monday in Kansas City.

“It was a little tight,” Garcia said.

“They took me out for precautionary [reasons]. I can run, but not 100 percent.

That’s a smart decision. I don’t want to get worse.”

Garcia is a guy the Sox want to keep healthy. He finished April with an ALbest .368 average, five homers, 20 RBIs and ranked among the league leaders in several other categories. Mike Trout also is up there, as a Player of the Month candidate and the superstar center fielder figures to rate an edge but to be mentioned speaks volumes about the strides Garcia, 25, is making in his third full season – a campaign viewed as make-or-break for the Venezuelan.

Garcia’s teammates rode him to a somewhat surprising 13-10 record in April and will continue to pull for him, too.

Garcia, called “Little Miggy” while a Tigers teammate of two-time MVP Miguel Cabrera, hadn’t lived up to loftier expectations after Detroit traded him to the Sox, but Cabrera said Garcia held up through that because of manage-

ment’s continued support. He said the current clubhouse mix and chemistry serves Garcia well, too.

“The group of guys we have here is good for him,’’ Cabrera said. “It’s a nice group of guys here. We try to help each other. I have tried to help him, [Jose] Abreu has, too, and he has been very receptive. And that’s good.’’

The Sox were aiming for their first sweep of a three-game series in Detroit since 2008, but Miguel Gonzalez (3-1) got roughed up for a career-high

14 hits over six innings. Justin Upton homered, former Sox Alex Avila and Nick Castellanos had three hits each, and Jose Iglesias drove in three runs.

“I was up with every pitch,” said Gonzalez, whose ERA climbed from 2.00 to 3.27 with six earned runs allowed.

“My cutter, my curve ball, my fastball.’’

Jordan Zimmermann gave up three runs over five-plus innings for the Tigers. Todd Frazier’s third homer knocked him out. With Garcia gone in the fifth, the Sox’s comeback punch wasn’t the same.

Garcia hit when it matter in April, at a .405 clip with four home runs and 19 RBIs with runners on base. With two outs and runners in scoring position, he was 6 for 12 with two homers and 12 RBIs, and in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, he batted .423 with 12 RBIs. “Everything is a process,” Garcia said Sunday. “Every year you try to get better. I’m thankful for the great support. I want to have success here and stay here for a long time.’’

“He’s very confident right now on the field,’’ Cabrera said.

“The team never quit on him, and I think he knows that.’’

Garcia wouldn’t be the first player to excel for a month and regress back to norms. He said he won’t get overly excited about this, or get too low if and when things decline.

“Nope. Stay in the middle,’’ Garcia said. “Like always. Yessir.’’

April, however, was something to build on.

Baez sits again but Maddon says he’s not worried

bmiles@dailyherald.com BOSTON – For a second day in a row, Javier Baez was not in the Cubs’ starting lineup even though the Boston Red Sox started left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez.

Baez entered Sunday with a .203 batting average and an on-base percentage of .262.

“Obviously, I’m not hot right now,” Baez said. “He (manager Joe Maddon) is using the hottest people right now.”

Baez added he is not “uncomfortable” at the plate.

“No, I’m not seeing the ball as I look at it all the time,” he said. “Just working on it, whatever. Just making

my adjustments. It’s not like I’m not hitting the ball. I’m hitting the ball.

I’m just swinging at balls that are not in the zone.”

Maddon said he isn’t worried about Baez.

“I swear I’m not worried,” he said.

“I’m more worried about after last season and the emotional component of the WBC [World Baseball Classic], and I’m using the word ‘emotional’ a lot today. I’m really locked in to it. I just want to make sure that we build him into the season properly.

“Great start to spring training.

And then he goes (to the) WBC, tears it up there. They go deeply into this event. These guys were really involved. Coming into the regular season, it’s almost somewhat of a let-

down, I think, to a lot of these guys that played and played to that level so soon.

“Based on his body of work at the end of last year and what happened this spring, I want to really keep a close eye on him. I want to make sure that he stays engaged emotionally, mentally, because I think there was a lot laid on him early this year.”

Don’t fear the Monster: Kyle Schwarber started all three games at Fenway Park as the designated hitter. He said he wouldn’t mind playing left field and dealing with the Green Monster.

“That’s a little bucket-list item,” he said. “So maybe one day. But I’m going to stick with being the DH, put in some good at-bats.”

Schwarber was planning on going

to the top of the Monster before Sunday night’s game. He said the wall does present an inviting target, even for left-handed batters.

“Heck yeah, that’s inviting,” he said. “If you can get a ball and put it off that wall, it could be a double, it could not be. A fly ball out at Wrigley could be a double (to left at Fenway).”

That’s some relief: Cubs relievers entered Sunday with an ERA of 2.71 and a WHIP of 1.10. The ERA was the best in the National League and fifth in the majors. Overall, the bullpen has done a much tidier job lately.

“Part of it is [Hector] Rondon’s doing really well,” Maddon said. “He’s really figured himself out. Stropie’s [Pedro Strop] really getting his feet on the ground now, too.

Kisner-Brown, Blixt-Smith head to Zurich Classic playoff

The Associated Press AVONDALE, La. – Kevin Kisner deprived the die-hard fans around the rainsoaked 18th hole from seeing a winner in the Zurich Classic’s new team format as darkness fell Sunday night.

Not that anyone other than Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith seemed to mind.

Kisner chipped in for eagle from nearly 95 feet, lifting himself and teammate Scott Brown into a Monday playoff with Blixt and Smith.

“We knew we had to have it,” Kisner said. “I knew (Blixt and Smith) were going to make birdie. All I was trying to do was make sure I didn’t leave it short.”

Kisner’s clutch chip skipped on the green and hit the pin before dropping

in, whipping the crowd around the final green into a frenzy while Kisner waved both arms in celebration.

“I knew I hit it a little too hard when I touched it, but I loved the line, and when it hit the flag, I said, ‘Just please don’t come out of there,’” Kisner recalled. “It’s just one of those shots that you dream about.”

It also forced the 23-year-old Smith to make a 11/2-foot birdie putt to remain in contention for his maiden PGA Tour victory.

Kisner and Brown shot a 12-under 60 in best-ball play, and Blixt and Smith had a 64 to finish at 27-under par at the TPC Louisiana in the PGA Tour’s first team event in 36 years. The score of 60 didn’t count as a course record, but it was two strokes better than any score posted when the Zurich was a traditional stroke-play event.

Those players report to the teams’ training camps with the hopes – however slim – of sticking with the team.

Among the signings that were announced after the draft was Illinois State 227-pound linebacker BJ Bello with the Cleveland Browns. The Lincoln-Way West graduate began his collegiate career at Illinois before transferring to ISU. He played in a few games last fall for the Redbirds before an injury cut short his senior season.

High doses of pain relievers carry risk stomach inflammation, ulcers and possibly severe bleeding.

Celecoxib (Celebrex) is a more selective NSAID and does not decrease prostaglandins in the stomach. This translates into less likelihood of creating ulcerations.

All NSAIDs also reduce prostaglandins in the kidneys, which can lead to kidney injury. This injury becomes worse in people who have a history of chronic kidney disease, who are older, or who have congestive heart failure or cirrhosis.

Lastly, the chronic use of high-dose NSAIDs has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks. Celecoxib may have a slightly greater risk of this than ibuprofen and naproxen, but a recent New England Journal of Medicine study looking at those who used NSAIDs chronically for arthritis found no difference in cardiovascular events between celecoxib and either ibuprofen or naproxen.

Of the drugs you listed, my feeling is that acetaminophen is the safest when used regularly. However, I would use acetaminophen at no higher doses than 4,000 mg a day and, if you were to use it regularly, I would recommend decreasing this amount to 2,000 to 3,000 mg a day.

The NSAIDs – ibuprofen, naproxen and celecoxib – are needed by some who have inflammatory arthritis, and they are good medications in the short-term. I would caution against consistent long-term use, especially at high doses and especially if you have any history of heart disease.

Dear Doctor: Which pain reliever is safer – acetaminophen, ibuprofen, celecoxib or naproxen? It seems as if they all carry some risks.

Dear Reader: Pain is a symptom to which we can all relate. It’s also an important indicator of possible injury within the body and should be acknowledged, not simply by taking medication, but also by understanding the cause of the pain. That said, one person’s pain is different than another’s, with some people needing greater pain relief.

So, if you need a medication for pain, what should you use? Let’s look first at acetaminophen (Tylenol). Acetaminophen has been used since 1955; it is available in multiple products, works well for pain, and is for the most part safe. However, at high doses – specifically, above 4,000 milligrams a day, or eight tablets of Extra Strength Tylenol – the medication can cause liver damage, or even death, especially in those who are malnourished, drink alcohol in excess or consistently take more than 4,000 mg a day. Age also is a factor, as those 40 and older have a greater risk of liver failure and death after over-dosage.

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) has been used for pain since 1974. It is one of many medications classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). NSAIDs work by inhibiting formation of mediators of pain and inflammation, and they’re notably effective at decreasing inflammation in swollen joints related to arthritis.

Naproxen (Aleve) was first marketed in 1976 and works similarly to ibuprofen.

But it has a longer half-life, giving it a longer-lasting effect. Both ibuprofen and naproxen decrease the formation of prostaglandins in the stomach. These chemicals produced by the body have hormonelike effects, protecting the stomach lining from acidity. The decrease of prostaglandins can injure the stomach lining, leading to

Periodically, we hear in the media about tragedies that happened because someone had a seizure and drove into a restaurant, a shop window, etc. For someone with an illness that could endanger the lives of passengers, pedestrians and other innocent people to get behind the wheel of a vehicle is selfish and unconscionable.

In my classes, if we exclude playing far too quickly from the dummy at trick one, I see two errors more often than any others. They are related to answering partner’s takeout double and playing third hand high.

Let’s put them under the spotlight this week.

Look at the South hand in the diagram. West opens one diamond, North makes a takeout double, and East passes -- what should South do?

South can pass only when he has long and strong diamonds. So, a simple bid in a suit promises nothing; it has a range of 0-8 points. This South hand contains 9 points, so he must jump to two spades. Yes, this could be a 4-3 fit, but we cannot worry about that at the moment. A good partner will have four-card support.

Here, North, knowing his partner has 9-11 points, jumps to four spades.

How should South plan the play after West cashes two top diamonds and exits with a trump?

Declarer has three top losers: one heart and two diamonds. He must find the club queen to make his contract. When faced with a guess like this, leave it as late as possible.

First, draw the trumps. Then, play on hearts to learn that East holds the ace. Next, check the points. South is missing only 16, and West opened the bidding, but East has the heart ace. West must have the club queen, so finesse through him to get home safely.

This work will include tree trimming, tree removal and brush control to clear vegetation away from ComEd electric wires running from pole to pole.

This work is necessary because trees interfering with electric lines can cause service outages and safety hazards. Line clearance is not required on all properties in these areas. No line clearance work will be performed on wires running from utility poles to homes or buildings. Maps of the affected areas are on file at local municipal or county offices. All trees requiring maintenance in each area will be addressed during these projects. Property owners may appeal the planned vegetation management activities through ComEd or the Illinois Commerce Commission.
