Folkers Hotel – Frankfort Snapshots and postcard photographs of small-town scenes taken in the early 20th century help to provide an image of small-town America and give a unique perspective on the character of the rural life of its residents.

Images of Main Street, with its opera house, bank, saloons, barbershop, lodge hall, courthouse, railroad depot and hotel, also help to portray a strong sense of community before the automobile.

Most of America’s small towns originally were plotted in response to early 19th century railroad construction. A town’s Main Street either paralleled the railroad tracks or crossed the tracks on the perpendicular.

Hotels of the railroad era, in both rural and urban areas, often were located in business districts close to, but also distanced from, the noise and pollution of the railroad.

Through much of the 19th century, most small-town hotels were integrated physically into downtown “blocks.”

These hotels were often housed in a single building and provided a variety of functions: lodge halls, “opera houses,” restaurants, bakeries, banks or retail stores. These integrated business blocks with hotel facilities typified Main Street America’s Gilded Age of the 19th century.

Small-town hotels thrived, as did the towns themselves, by competing with each other. Some hotels were enlarged and others were replaced entirely by a new structure over time.

With the arrival of the automobile, the landscape of the small town changed.

Main Street, which traditionally functioned as a large place for pedestrians and wagons, now solely became a space for automobiles. In time, this new mode of transportation would pull business and other activities farther away from the original city center, including hotels.

A variety of these early hotels still can be seen along the main streets of towns throughout Illinois, including Frankfort.

years by Johnson Folkers, a German immigrant who settled in the Mokena area around 1850. Eventually, his three sons, William, Frank and Peter, would take over ownership of the hotel.

A partnership formed by these three brothers, known as Folkers Brothers, carried on numerous businesses begun

by Johnson that were important to the growth of Frankfort, including a livery stable, a slaughter house and construction for the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern railroad near town.

The first successful business of this partnership was the meat market, which the three brothers purchased from their father. A brick building was erected next to the hotel to provide storage and support for the meat market concern.

In addition to the hotel and meat business, in the first decade of the 20th century, Frank Folkers constructed lines

for the Interstate Telephone Co. in Frankfort, Green Garden, Monee and Peotone townships.

Once completed, the Folkers Brothers operated a central exchange on the second floor of the hotel. In time, the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. acquired the Interstate Co., and Folkers helped to build the Bell Telephone Co.’s additional trunk lines between Joliet and Chicago Heights.

Further down the block on the right, the two-story brick building was home to a butcher shop and the Exchange Bank.

On the north side of the street, visible in the Then photograph, the old post office, drug store and grocery store buildings are visible.

LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION Property owners of Will County struggle with standing water issues

A Green Garden Township resident since 2011, Popko would love to have people over to kick back on his rural, unincorporated Monee acreage south of Frankfort.

But, there’s often standing water covering his yard. It’s an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. And when the water finally dissipates, the ground is soft and grass is ruined.

“You can’t even plan a cookout because you don’t know what it’s going to be like,” Popko said. “Normally, you’d say ‘Come over in a couple weeks, we’ll

Green Garden Township resident hang out.’ But if it rains in the interim, you can’t do it. The amount of water is enormous.”

This land and 15 to 20 other properties in the area have standing water for days or weeks after a significant rain, Popko said. His lot sometimes has a foot of water in flat areas and knee-high water in the ditch along South 88th Avenue.

Will County land continues to get developed from farm land into residential, commercial and industrial space. When land is altered, drainage patterns are sometimes altered and new problems arise. Municipal subdivision plans usually include retention ponds, while unincorporated areas aren’t as regulated.

Before buying the home in July 2011,

Popko asked the previous owners about some standing water he noticed. He recalls them saying it goes away in a day or two.

“They’re not to blame,” Popko said.

“It’s a bigger issue than that. It’s a number of homes here that experience standing water, some significantly worse than we do.”

Every year since, Popko said he has been in contact with the Will County Land Use Department, continuing to push the county to find a solution and fix it or work with property owners in the area to find one.

‘You could tell the love of God was there’ Rick Mullan desired all to know the gospel for the right reasons

PLAINFIELD – On March 2, Lynne Caldwell, a new member of Friendship Baptist Church in Plainfield, had her first long conversation with associate pastor Rick Mullan.

Lynne, of Romeoville, had popped her head into his office to say “hi” after attending a women’s Bible study.

To her surprise and delight, Rick talked to her for 45 minutes.

“He was very open, very loving, very much a man of God,” Lynne said. “You could tell that he cared about people. You could tell the love of God was there.”

The next day, Rick was rushed to the hospital. Rick was 57 when he died March 5 from complications of an aortic aneurysm.

Lynne said people drove from miles away to attend Rick’s memorial and share testimonials on how he’d helped them.

“It went 30, 40 minutes longer than planned,” Lynne said, “because people were sharing from their heart.

I was just so touched by all that.”

When Odis Weaver, a senior pastor, came to Friendship Baptist Church 12 years ago, Rick had already served there for six. Odis said Rick was a great colleague in ministry and a great asset to the rest of the Friendship staff.

Odis said Rick worked with small groups, conducted Bible studies and trained teachers to bring up new leaders.

“He was a very gifted person, very hardworking,” Odis said. “He even taught himself to play guitar after I came here because he felt that was needed to enhance our music and worship.”

This love for music and worship drew Rick and his wife, Lanette Mullan of Plainfield, together. Although they had met in passing at college, Lanette and Rick officially became introduced when he sang at her home church in Mississippi.

“He had a beautiful voice, and I fell in love with that voice,” Lanette said.

Of course, Lanette also thought he was handsome, she said. And that he had a great personality, always upbeat.

“He asked me out soon after that.

Rick Mullan was an associate pastor at Friendship Baptist Church before he died March 5.

Our first date was on the Fourth of July,” Lanette said. “We went to my hometown Fourth of July celebration in the park. Two weeks after our first date, he proposed and I accepted. We were married June 25, 1983. I’m not an impulsive person. I just knew it was the right thing.”

Lanette completed her last year of college and then they moved around for several years because of Rick’s ministry. First, it was Texas for three years while Rick was in seminary.

After that, Rick went to a church

in Springfield and then Fairview Heights for three years.

After that, it was St. Petersburg, Florida, for two years and then Orlando for four at a small church that Rick pastored, Lanette said. The rest were associate pastor positions.

“We came to Plainfield in December 1998,” Lanette said. “And we’ve been here ever since.”

Lanette said they stayed at Friendship because they wanted to settle in one area while raising their two children.

“This church has been a wonderful experience for us, and he was just energetic in the church,” Lanette said. “He always wanted to share the gospel.”

One way Rick shared the gospel was through wild game dinners held at the church. Rick, an avid outdoorsman – a hobby he shared with his daughter, Kyrstin Mullan of Joliet – felt wild game dinners were a good way to connect hunters with God. “A lot of men today don’t go to church like they used to, say 40 and 50 years ago, but yet, they believe there’s a God,” Rick said in a 2015 Herald-News story. “We just want to share Jesus with them.”

But even as Rick shared the gospel, he encouraged attendees to share their stories.

“Outdoorsmen love to tell you hunting stories,” Rick said. “It’s like asking a grandfather to tell you about his grandkids.”

Yet the wild game dinner was not bait to get people into the church. In fact, Rick stressed the necessity of being authentic, especially to outdoorsmen.

“Be real,” Rick said. “They can smell when someone is not authentic.”

Despite Rick’s pastoral responsibilities, he still found time to coach the Special Olympics basketball team that his son, Jonathan Mullan, played on, Lanette said.

“He loved building relationships with the kids and other coaches,” Lanette said.

But for Rick, no matter the activity or outreach, God was central.

“As we walked through the visitation time and the funeral, and folks responded to how he had touched their life, at the very top was his faith,” Odis said, “and his desire for others to have the same faith.”

Pioneer Path students get creative for firefighter calendar Channahon Firefighter Cindy Wilson visits school children in pre-K through second grade, teaching them all about fire safety. The program allows students an opportunity to become familiar with their local emergency responders so they are less scared if an emergency does arise.

Students get to meet the men and women of the department, talk with them and see how they look with their gear on.

The program has worked so well that once students move up to third grade and fourth grade, they want to see more of Wilson, the other firefighters and the fire station.

Wilson and Channahon art teacher Megan Verbic, from Pioneer Path school, put their heads together to come up with ways third- and fourth-grade students can still be involved.

Last year, art students at Pioneer Path drew portraits of the firefighters, who posed as models.

They learned about proportion and accurate figure drawing. A dozen of the drawings were selected and turned into a calendar.

This year, Wilson and Verbic took things a step higher. They turned the project into a photo contest for the 201617 school year calendar. And the kids met the challenge.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Each of the 12 classes took a trip to the fire station on Center Avenue, where they got to mull around, look at nearly everything at the station, inside and out, and make decisions on what would make a good photograph.

They used iPads to capture their photos and then, back at school, were able to edit the photos (if they so chose) in a computer program. The only caveat – no people could be in the photos, just objects.

Some students came up with collages; others found interesting angles and ways to photograph simple objects like flags, gauges and equipment.

One photograph was chosen from each of the 12 classrooms of Pioneer Path plus a 13th one for the cover.

Last week, they held a photography show to introduce the works of the students to their families and the public. The show was held in an engine bay at the Channahon Fire Station. The winning photos were displayed on easels with the remaining works spread across the back wall.

“I took a bunch of pictures. I thought this one was a good shot,” Fayman said. “I thought it was cool around the firehouse.”

Both Wilson and Verbik were amazed at the quality and subjects of

the photos.

The grand prize-winning photo was taken by Taylor Gauer and graces the cover of the calendar.

It’s a view of firefighter’s turnout gear hanging in a large, open locker.

Taylor chose to take the photo in black and white, which almost gives it a 1930s feel, Wilson said.

Channahon Fire chief John Petrakis had a few of his own favorites picked out. One was a shot of the department’s flags, looking from the bottom of the flag pole upward; the reflection of lights against the blue sky almost illuminated the flags.

Another was close-up shot of the grill on a fire engine, which incorporated patriotic colors. A fire hose can be seen rolled up and sticking out the hose well, ready to go.

The Friends of Moraine Hills State Park is offering $1,000 college scholarships to two 2017 high school graduates entering the field of environmental studies.

By Diane Krieger Spivak Terry Giorgi couldn’t wait to see her grandchildren over spring break after enduring a heart attack and colon cancer within a few months.

On Sept. 12, 2016, the 69-year-old was rushed to Silver Cross Hospital after experiencing numbness in both her arms. She survived a cardiac arrest followed by emergency angioplasty.

While recuperating, her primary physician—Dr. Orest Horodysky, noticed Giorgi’s blood count was low - unusual, considering she had been given two units of blood. After a week with no improvement, a colonoscopy uncovered a lemon-sized tumor on her colon.

Giorgi’s team of doctors determined she should have the tumor surgically removed.

Because of Giorgi’s recent cardiac procedure, Dr. Gamagami suggested that she wait a few months before colon surgery to remove the slowgrowing tumor to minimize the risk of another heart attack. On Dec. 30 Giorgi underwent robotic-assisted colon surgery in which Dr.

bokon@shawmedia.com TROY TOWNSHIP – William Kobe said he farmed land along Black Road for 45 years without serious flooding issues before a nearby subdivision was built.

Ponds developed after heavy rains in past years, he said.

“In a day and a half, they were gone, and you didn’t lose your crop,” Kobe said. “Now you have water for three months at a time.”

Such drainage predicaments are not uncommon around the county, Will County Farm Bureau Manager Mark Schneidewind said.

“It happens in Manhattan. It happens in Peotone. It happens every-

where,” Schneidewind said.

A county stormwater ordinance was developed to avert farm versus subdivision drainage conflicts. But many subdivisions were built before the ordinance was written, Schneidewind said.

The farm bureau tries to help, but the solutions typically aren’t simple.

Kobe blames the city of Joliet and a drainage system designed for the nearby Kearney Glen subdivision. City officials suggest the problem could be Kobe’s farm drainage system.

“I don’t know what else the city can do,” Joliet City Attorney Marty Shanahan said. “We’ve spent a lot of time and money on this.”

One problem, Schneidewind said, is farm drain tile that for decades had drained into a creek now drains into the detention pond in Kearney Glen.

The county stormwater ordinance prescribes separating farm tile systems from subdivision drainage.

Typically, more than one problem leads to the flooding, and correcting them costs money, Schneidewind said.

Deciding who pays becomes another problem.

“It’s not an easy solution – there’s no doubt,” Schneidewind said. “It’s not just a matter of go ahead and fix it.”

But the land use department sees it differently. The homes are not actual subdivisions and were built in the mid- to late 1990s. Former farmland was sold in parcels, and filed and recorded with the Recorder of Deeds Office, Will County Land Use Department Executive Director Curt Paddock said.

The land use department’s duties are different from a municipality’s, and there is no public works department to fix the problem, Paddock said.

Additionally, the land use department noted that Popko had an inspection done before buying the property.

In that case, and in several other inspections over the years, the land use department found no evidence of any specific properties doing anything to violate county law regarding water drainage.

“That’s the extent of our authority and responsibility,” Paddock said. “We also facilitated multiple meetings with Green Garden Township.”

Green Garden Township Highway Commissioner Bob Massat noted the flooding is occurring on private property and the ditches and roads are in the township’s jurisdiction. He said the roads do not flood.

“Whether they should have got a building permit from Will County, I can’t really answer,” Massat said. “But there were drainage tiles through the property when it was farmland. When they built those houses, swimming pools and pole barns, it destroyed those field tiles, and they never repaired any of them. That’s where the flooding comes from.”

The issue is nothing new. Massat said he had a meeting about 18 years ago in which the township talked with people in the area who were experiencing flooding on their lots.

Paddock added that Popko doesn’t appear to have a consensus or resolution with other property owners on how to proceed.

Massat said he feels sorry for the homeowners, but said many of them continue to live with it. He suggested the neighbors get together to try to find a solution, but pointed out many of them don’t know each other.

“I do feel sorry for the people,” Massat said. “Maybe Will County should have looked closer back when it was developed. They never declared it a subdivision when the parcels were sold.”

“The township doesn’t have a lot of money to begin with,” Massat said.

“It’s mostly agriculture here. I asked people at the meeting if they would chip in with the township to put a drainage pipe down South 88th Avenue to a nearby waterway. There wasn’t one person that would put a nickel into getting the pipe.”

So the township ending up paying between $40,000 and $50,000 to add the pipe, Massat said. It seemed to help, but over the years, property owners have continued to alter their properties, further changing the flow of water, Massat said.

Popko said he has considered legal action but would prefer if the county found a way to fix the issue. The county, based on a report from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, has suggested neighbors join together and consult with an engineer to find a solution.

“Part of the issue is Mr. Popko, and perhaps some neighbors, have a mis-

He was a devoted son, brother, uncle and friend. Paul is survived by his parents, Paul and Kay Muench of Channahon, Illinois; his sister, Pam Muench; and nephew, Christian (C.J.) Muench of Shorewood, Illinois; his brother, Mike Muench of Channahon, Illinois; and niece, Jenna Muench of Lockport, Illinois; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and many cherished friends. He is preceded in death by his sister, Jennifer Lynn Muench (1981); paternal grandparents, Frantz and Grace Muench of Shattuc, Illinois; and maternal grandparents, Clarence and Stella Newcomb of Centralia, Illinois.

He graduated from Minooka High School in 1980 and from the University of Illinois in 1983 with an electrical engineering degree. For the last 34 years, he worked for IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York as a STSM (Senior Technical Staff Member), creating innovative analog solutions for high-end systems. He became a Master Inventor and was widely recognized for his forward-thinking, mentoring and problem-solving skills. He was the recipient of the City of Joliet Distinguished Service Award, and finance chairman of the New Lenox 1976 Bi-Centennial Celebration. Don enjoyed coaching baseball, and was the past coach of the New Lenox Little League baseball, and finance chairman for the Pop Warner Football Program in New Lenox.

Sandra was born June 24, 1942, in Champaign, IL, to Wallace and Ruth Paul.

Sandra was a homemaker. She loved cooking and working with flowers in the summertime.

She liked traveling to numerous states for vacations. She loved playing the piano. She was a Sunday School teacher and church pianist for more than 30 years. On August 8, 1959, Sandra Paul married Dean Reed in Casey, IL. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Ed Paul.

She is survived by her loving husband, Dean; two sons, James (Dawn) Reed of Dwight and Jeffrey Reed of Morris; three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Gloria R. Matusefski (nee Luisi), age 89, unexpectedly, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with her family by her side.

Gloria was born and raised in Blue Island, IL as the daughter of the late Carmen and Mary (nee Sisco) Luisi on October 1, 1927. She married her husband John in 1946 and was a longtime New Lenox resident before returning to Joliet several years ago.

Formerly employed by Crombies Dairy, Milligan’s Drug Store and the Mokena Pharmacy.

A member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a former member of St. Thaddeus Catholic, both in Joliet. She was very active in church organizations and was the former past president of the Ladies of Columbus, Knights of Columbus, Council #382 of Joliet.

Gloria could be seen volunteering in many capacities as her faith directed her, but most often at the Knights of Columbus spaghetti dinners. Her goal in life was to always give back to her family, church, and community.

When she wasn’t giving back, her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and a dear friend to many. Her hardworking hands to rest, the constant love of a gentle woman will be truly missed by those who had come to know her.

Our family would like to especially thank the Villa Franciscan Rehab Center for the care and kindness they displayed to our mother.

Erin Moran, Joanie Cunningham in ‘Happy Days,’ dies at 56

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Erin Moran, the former child star who played Joanie Cunningham in the sitcoms “Happy Days” and “Joanie Loves Chachi,” has died.

She was 56.

Moran was found dead Saturday by emergency responders after a dispatcher for the Harrison County, Indiana, sheriff’s department received a 911 call, the department said. The cause of death has not been determined. An autopsy is pending.

A Burbank, California, native, Moran began acting in TV and movies before she was 10 years old. She had several years of experience when she was cast in 1974 in “Happy Days” as Joanie Cunningham, the kid sister to high school student Richie Cunningham, played by Ron Howard, who went on to become a successful filmmaker.

Her more recent credits included “The Love Boat” and “Murder, She Wrote,” but she never approached the success of “Happy Days” and was more often in the news for her numerous personal and financial struggles and was reportedly homeless at times.

Debuting at a time of nostalgia for the seemingly innocent 1950s, the sitcom was set in Milwaukee and became a long-running hit. Howard and Winkler were the show’s biggest stars, but the smiling, freckle-faced Moran also became popular.

In 1982, she was paired off with fellow “Happy Days” performer Scott Baio in the short-lived “Joanie Loves Chachi.” Moran returned to “Happy Days” in 1984, the show’s final season.

“I would love to do a feature [film], I’d love to do a play,” she told CNN in 1981 when asked what she’d like to do after “Happy Days.”

In 2011, she and Ross and former “Happy Days” actors Anson Williams and Donnie Most sued CBS, saying they were owed money for merchandising related to the show. The lawsuit was settled the next year.

Moran told Xfinity that she had been working on a memoir, called “Happy Days, Depressing Nights.”

“OH Erin... now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth,” Winkler tweeted Saturday. “Rest In It serenely now.. too soon.”

SPRINGFIELD – Amid a national push by unions and worker advocates for a $15 minimum wage, Illinois Democrats hope to pass an ambitious hike during the spring legislative session, despite a warning from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner that he opposes an increase of any kind.

The proposal would lift the state’s minimum wage from its current $8.25 to $15 over the next five years, a more accelerated leap than previous adjustments in Illinois. It also would constitute a larger jump than increases toward $15 approved last year in New York and California, where the rates had been $9 and $10, respectively.

But as with previous efforts in Illinois, the measure likely is will be tied up in the state’s electoral politics.

Sponsors of the legislation acknowledge Rauner’s opposition but have signaled they want to force him to act on the measure ahead of next year’s gubernatorial election, in which he already faces half a dozen Democratic challengers.

“We will get a really good opportunity to see where the governor stands,” said Rep. Will Guzzardi, a Chicago Democrat sponsoring the wage bill in the House.

Wheaton College student dies after track, field incident

WHEATON – A Wheaton College freshman died Saturday after accidentally being struck by a hammer during a track and field meet, according to a college news release.

Ethan Roser, 19, a transfer student from Cincinnati, was volunteering at the Wheaton College competition when he was hit about 4:15 p.m. during the hammer throw event, the release stated.

Wheaton College Public Safety and city of Wheaton paramedics responded immediately, and Roser was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Eastern Illinois University tries to boost enrollment

CHARLESTON – Eastern Illinois University has boosted its marketing campaigns, social media outreach and events for admitted students in an attempt to reverse a recent trend of declining enrollment. The university’s figures show that total enrollment has declined from more than 8,500 in the fall of 2015 to fewer than 6,700 this spring. Enrollment numbers usually drop a bit each spring because of December graduations.

Josh Norman, associate vice president for enrollment management, told the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier that the university is facing statewide economic and political issues that have resulted in Illinois being the second biggest exporter of students among the 50 states.

Wheaton military museum to reopen in summer

WHEATON – A Chicago-area military museum is set to reopen this summer after nearly a year of renovations and an $8 million redesign.

The First Division Museum in Wheaton is scheduled to open Aug. 26. It chronicles the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, known as the “Big Red One” for its distinctive shoulder patch. It was established in 1917, making it the oldest division in the armed forces.

The Daily Herald reported that executive director Paul Herbert, a retired colonel, has helped collect artifacts and stories for years.

Among the exhibits is the story of Ross McGinnis, a 19-year-old private first class who won the Medal of Honor posthumously. He gave up his life to save four others from a grenade blast inside a Humvee about a decade ago in Iraq.

Labor unions and other allies of the national “Fight for $15” campaign contend raising the minimum wage boosts the economy by putting more money into pockets of low-wage workers, decreasing reliance on government assistance.

Advocates have said anything less than $15 falls far short of the cost of living for millions of Illinoisans. They point to research including a 2016 report from the University of Illinois that shows at least 34 percent of Illinois workers earn less than $15 an hour, many of them while helping to support a family.

Pike County archaeological artifact travels into space

QUINCY – A stone spear point from Pike County is one of the few archaeological artifacts to travel with an astronaut into space.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported that from Denver that astronaut Kjell Lindgren approached the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in 2014 before a 141day tour aboard the International Space Station. He offered to take something from the museum with him.

Museum officials selected a 13,000-year-old Clovis point after considering size constraints, rareness and durability.

The object was chosen for its connection to the first people to occupy the prehistoric Americas.

Officials said both the tool and the space station are tangible symbols of human wanderlust and the ability to break through barriers into unknown territory.

Lindgren and the Clovis point returned to Earth in late 2015.

Battles over health care, budget awaiting Trump

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is heading into one of the most challenging weeks of his presidency, juggling a renewed health care push and a looming budget deadline. It’s all complicated by a potential showdown with Democrats over paying for a border wall.

The symbolic 100-day mark for the administration is Saturday. That’s the same day government could shut down without a budget deal.

Trump has announced a rally in Pennsylvania that day.

Despite Trump’s dismissal that the 100-day marker is “artificial,” the White House is planning a packed week of activities leading up to Saturday. Trump will sign executive orders on energy and rural policies, meet with the president of Argentina and travel to Atlanta for a National Rifle Association event.

Top aides also will fan out around the country to promote the administration.

Aides stressed on Sunday talk shows that funding a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border and a vote on an effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s health care law were priorities. But they also suggested a shutdown could be avoided.

“I don’t think anyone foresees or expects or would want a shutdown,” said budget director Mick Mulvaney on “Fox News Sunday.”

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he believes the spending bill will include “something satisfactory” to reflect Trump’s desire to build a wall. The legislation would keep the government running through Sept. 30, the end of the budget year.

“We expect the priorities of the president to be reflected,” Priebus said, citing ongoing talks with the House and the Senate. He added that “it’ll be enough in the negotiation to move forward either with construction or the planning ... to get going on the border wall and border security.”

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California described a border wall as “immoral” and “expensive” when asked if there was any scenario in which Democrats will agree to money for a wall to avoid a shutdown.

“Democrats do not support the wall,” she said, speaking

also on NBC. “Republicans on the border states do not support the wall.”

“The Republicans have the votes in the House and the Senate and the White House to keep government open. The burden to keep it open is on the Republicans,” Pelosi said. She noted that when Trump promised to build a wall during his campaign, he never indicated he would “pass billions of dollars of cost of the wall onto the taxpayer.”

Trump weighed in on his proposed border wall Sunday on Twitter, saying “Eventually, but at a later date so we can get started early, Mexico will be paying, in some form, for the badly needed border wall.”

Trump has repeatedly asserted that Mexico would pay for the wall, which he says is necessary to stop the flow of immigrants crossing the border illegally as well as drug smugglers.

On Obama’s health law, Priebus said he’d like to have a vote on the GOP repeal-and-replace bill in the House this coming week. But he insisted it didn’t make too much difference to the White House whether the vote came next “Friday or Saturday or Monday.”

JT Night of Champions a hit – as Glen would have wanted VIEWS Dick Goss Without a doubt, we missed Glen Marcum.

A driving force behind the annual Joliet Township Athletic Boosters Night of Champions, Marcum died Nov. 1. As he would have wanted it, the event continued with the 13th annual banquet Thursday night at IBEW 176 Hall.

What a night it was. Brian Rande, president of the boosters, headed the banquet committee and served as master of ceremonies.

The award winners included the Joliet Township boys basketball team of 1994-95, which finished fourth in the state in Class AA; former Joliet Central wrestling standout Tim Chaplin; longtime JT tennis coach Kit Gillman; Steelman of the Year Brian Shaw; Tiger of the Year Heather Suca; and the fan of the year – Don “Duck” Dickinson as the No. 1 fan for both schools. Marcum received the inaugural fan award in 2016.

I had the pleasure of presenting the basketball team that arguably was as good as any Joliet Township has produced.

I also spent time before and after the banquet reminiscing with members of the team that always was so much fun to cover.

In a two-season period from 1993 through 1995, the Steelmen went 59-5 under coach Mike O’Connell. All five losses were to teams that would go on to finish no worse than third in their respective state tournaments.

“The skill level, the passing and shooting were better 20 years ago,” he said. “Kids today don’t work on their individual skills. I call it the video generation. Instead of being outside practicing, playing pickup games, kids are inside playing video games. They still play a lot, but it seems like it has to be organized with refs and coaches.

“Our [1994-95] team had three starters who played football, and they played unorganized basketball. When is the last time you saw anybody playing games in driveways anymore?”

Mike O’Connell, who was complimented more than once about how he was “spot on” with his comments, recalled playing in the Joliet Punlic Schools District 86 fantasy baseball game – organized by Marcum – years ago, “when ‘Black Jack’ Jack McDowell called us together. He said when he grew up as a kid, they would leave the house in the morning, play all sorts of sports during the day, only going home for lunch, then go back out until supper.

“In a sandlot baseball game in three hours they would get 15 to 20 at-bats.

Today in the same amount of time a kid is lucky to get three at-bats.”

Area track and field athletes enjoyed a successful weekend with girls teams from Minooka and Joliet West, and Plainfield South’s boys team all winning invite titles, while Romeoville’s girls and Minooka’s boys both settled for second place.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD Minooka wins at Neuqua Valley: The

Minooka got titles from Emily Shelton in the 3,200 (10 minutes, 53.73 seconds) and the 1,600 (5:12.06), from Mackenzie Callahan in the 800 (2:15.99) and from Sydney Andreano in discus (118 feet, 8 inches), while Ashley Tutt took second in the 3,200 (11:31.28), Brooklyn Bachmann was second in pole vault (10-0) and the 4x400 (4:10.77) and 4x800 (10:09.11) relays also were second. “To get off to a great start really set the tone and set the table, and makes it easier for the guys behind you to feed off that,” Anderson said.

It made things easier for Sox starter Derek Holland (2-2), who provided his own lifts in the fifth when the Indians mounted their best threat with runners at second and third and no

Reds, soft-tossing Arroyo put crimp in Cubs’ vibe

CINCINNATI – Anthony Rizzo is heating up for the Cubs. The bullpen is looking better. And they left Cincinnati on Sunday with a series win for the fifth time in six series to start the season.

But that was about it. If you were looking for a feel-good vibe in the Cubs’ clubhouse after Sunday’s 7-5 loss to the Reds, you were still looking after the last piece of carry-on luggage rolled out of the room on their way to Pittsburgh.

Especially if you were looking in John Lackey’s corner.

“Yeah, I don’t care about the series right now. I’m [ticked],” said Lackey, the Cubs’ starter who lost for the third consecutive start on a strange day when most things that could go wrong did.

“I felt like I definitely pitched a lot better than the numbers are going to

show,” he said. “Two out of the first three runs were a couple balls that kind of fell in on me. And I really didn’t give up a whole lot of hard contact. What are you going to do?”

Well, there was that second-inning home run that Scott Schebler hit. And the three-run double to the left-center gap in the sixth by Patrick Kivlehan – a bench guy who wasn’t even in the lineup until Zack Cozart was scratched because of a sore wrist.

If anything, this was a day that summed up the nature of the Cubs’ stutter-step start to their championship defense.

Consider the “dominant” pitching performance by Reds starter Bronson Arroyo, who before April 8 hadn’t pitched in a big-league game in three seasons because of multiple arm injuries.

His velocity ranging most of the day from 75 mph to 82 mph, Arroyo baffled the Cubs for six innings, retiring the first 10 he faced, allowing two

runs on a Kris Bryant single followed by a Rizzo homer in the fourth and striking out seven.

“Obviously, he’s throwing below hitting speed right now,” catcher Miguel Montero said.

Meanwhile the Cubs have trailed in nine consecutive games (losing five of them).

They haven’t had a quality start from the rotation since Jon Lester’s seven scoreless innings in a no-decision a week earlier against the Pirates.

And Bryant hasn’t had a multihit game since his two-homer game the day before that Lester start. The league’s reigning MVP – and player with MLB’s hottest-selling jersey – is hitting .230 with 19 strikeouts (second to Kyle Schwarber on the team).

“Some of it is he’s fouling his pitch off,” said manager Joe Maddon, who said he’s not even sure how often Bryant’s getting his pitch to hit.

“But I’m kind of encouraged because were in decent shape right now,

and he really hasn’t gotten off yet. Rizzo has. Schwarber has done a great job of getting on base and getting some big hits, but he’s still got a lot left in the tank, too. …

“Some guys really haven’t kicked it in gear yet, and we’re still sitting in decent shape.”

Tell it to Lackey (1-3).

This is the kind of day it was for him: On the ninth pitch of the first at-bat of the game, Billy Hamilton blooped a ball to center that Jon Jay allowed to fall in front of him for a hit after getting a bad jump. Next two pitches: steals of second and third.

One out later, Joey Votto hit a sacrifice fly for the quick lead.

Errors on a questionable scoring decision on a ball past Rizzo and a bad throw by Bryant contributed to two unearned runs during a four-run sixth against Lackey – also costing any chance Lackey had of pitching deeper in the game.

CHICAGO – Learning by doing is one way to teach a young team how to succeed.

Learning by watching a successful team is another, and White Sox manager Rick Renteria likes to employ both.

Watching how the defending American League champion Indians play – even in a game where they commit three errors leading to two unearned runs – is part of the schooling.

“They still grind out at-bats.

They’re not going to quit. Even when they were down, they aren’t going to lie down for anyone,” he said.

“Our challenge is we have to [learn] to do the same.”

The learning curve has to be drawn for the rebuilding Sox, but they earned a good grade Sunday in a 6-2 victory, salvaging the last game of a three-game series.

After failing to score in the first two games – and not scoring since the fifth inning of their last game in New York – shortstop Tim Anderson lit the fire with a leadoff double off Danny Salazar (1-2), whom the Sox bested two weeks ago in Cleveland. It sparked a three-run inning, and emotions on the team.

veteran lefty has been a steady early performer for his new team. And he has continued the mastery over the Indians he showed in his seven seasons with the Texas Rangers.

Holland improved to 7-1 lifetime against the Indians, with a 2.27 ERA in 11 career starts against them. The only run off him Sunday was a solo home run by Lindor leading off the fourth.

“No matter what, that’s an unbelievable team,” he said. “They’ve done some great things for the state of Ohio, I’ve got a lot of friends and family back there who pull for them – except when they’re playing me,” Holland said. “Just because I have a good record against them, every day you’ve got to show up and go after it. Never give in to them.”

That is Renteria’s mantra as well, whether it’s the defending AL champs or a team that knows how to exploit its own assets.

“I just think in terms of baseball, you watch how other clubs might be performing, advancing runners or backing up plays on defense,” he said.

“You point out when other clubs are doing something well that you want to emulate.

“The Indians are a fighting club.

We want to be able to elevate and execute our game like that.”

Bears’ first month will be survival test BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush My immediate reaction after the NFL released the Bears’ 2017 regular-season schedule was: “Wow, what exactly did they do to deserve this?”

The murderer’s row the schedule makers have gifted the Bears with in September will tell us quickly exactly what the likelihood is the Bears can be significantly improved this season.

Opening at home against the Falcons, traveling to Tampa Bay and then coming back home to face the Steelers, all at noon on Sundays and then going to Green Bay on Thursday night, the Bears almost certainly will be a touchdown or more underdog in each of their first four games.

The Bears could be much improved and still go 0-4, effectively ending their season before it really gets going.

The good news is the only 2016 playoff teams the Bears will see the rest of the way will be a rematch with the Pack at home Nov. 12 and their two games against Detroit, and there is no week a team would rather have it’s bye than Week 9, smack dab in the middle of the season, and the Bears have drawn that straw this year.

The second quarter of the season is no walk in the park but does offer a lot more hope with Week 5 and Week 7 home games against Minnesota and Carolina and Week 6 and Week 8 trips to Baltimore and New Orleans.

A 4-4 start is not out of the realm of possibilities, but 1-7 or 2-6 seem more likely.

The Bears are set up for a strong second half, facing clubs with a combined 52-75-1 record last year, and their rematch with the Packers and two meetings with the Lions will offer the only 2016 opponents with winning records.

They also get a break not traveling after their Oct. 29 game in New Orleans for almost a month with the home rematch with Green Bay and the first Lions game at home before they go to Philadelphia on Nov. 26.

The following Sunday the Bears will get a visit from the 49ers exactly 364 days after the last time they came to town, when the Bears played their best game of 2016, a 26-6 win.

The last quarter of the season will send the Bears back on the road quite a bit, as they travel to Cincinnati and Detroit, host the Browns on Christmas Eve and then finish in Minnesota for the second season in a row.

It should surprise no one after a 3-13 campaign that the Bears will work in prime time only three times – the Thursday night in Green Bay, at home on a Monday night vs. the Vikings and a 3:30 Saturday start in that second Lions game.

With all that as the particulars, we can offer a best guess as to what it all means.

I actually expect the Bears to be much improved in 2017, but with the draft still a week off, you’re going to have to give me a few months to build my defense of that claim.

Beyond that, it’s reasonable to assume the Falcons, Steelers and Packers are playoff teams again, and the Bucs and Ravens look ready to make another run.

The Panthers and Eagles look likely to be improved while the Vikings, Saints, Lions and Bengals don’t feel all that scary.

This will change a number of times over the next four months as the Bears’ 13 opponents evolve along with them, but for now 7-9 seems possible.

Celtics beat Bulls to tie series

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – There were a handful of point guards sitting in the United Center on Sunday, and not one could stop the inevitable from happening to the Bulls.

Rajon Rondo was still in street clothes and a cast, nursing the right thumb fracture suffered in the Game 2 win.

Cameron Payne, who Bulls general manager Gar Forman acquired at the trade deadline from the Thunder and labeled “the point guard of the future,” was inactive.

Heck, even former Bull Derrick Rose was sitting courtside, strolling into the game late as a spectator. And not one could offer up any sort of aid.

A bad day for the Bulls, as that 2-0 lead they once had in the first-round best-of-seven series with the Celtics is now tied at 2-2, thanks to Boston’s 104-95 win, as well as 33 points from their AllStar point guard Isaiah Thomas.

Now coach Fred Hoiberg really has to do some searching if he plans to pull the upset over the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference, with Game 5 scheduled for Wednesday in Boston.

Despite giving it some serious thought after the Game 3 loss, Hoiberg decided to stay with Jerian Grant in Rondo’s starting point guard spot. After all, it was Grant who was first labeled “point guard of the future” by the front office when they acquired him in the Rose trade last summer.

Grant lasted just less than five minutes of the first quarter, going 0 for 3 and

earning the quick hook.

Then it was Michael Carter-Williams’ turn.

It was Carter-Williams who was acquired in training camp, kind of that point guard of the future 2.0. After the former NBA Rookie of the Year picked up two quick fouls, however, Hoiberg was searching. So a quick glimpse way down the bench, and there he was – the seldom-used Isaiah Canaan.

Canaan, signed in the offseason to add some outside shooting, had only appeared in two games since April 1, and only in mop-up duty.

Not only did Canaan offer up a spark against the Celtics, but he also started the second half for Hoiberg.

An indictment on just how badly the front office has handled the entire point guard drama this entire season, from scouting to player acquisition.

To Hoiberg’s credit, he rode Canaan into the third quarter, and the Bulls not only battled back from what was a 20-point deficit in the first half, but took a two-point lead with 4:35 left in the third after a Robin Lopez basket.

Unfortunately for the Bulls, there was another Isaiah on the floor looking to change the game around, and he was wearing green.

Isaiah Thomas scored 10 points in Boston’s 12-0 run, giving the Celtics the 79-70 lead going into the final stanza.

The Bulls pulled to within five in the fourth, but after five straight points from Thomas, the lead was 10 with 9:01 left. A lead the Celtics would not relinquish.

Rain washes out race at Bristol Newgarden wins for Team Penske

The Associated Press BRISTOL, Tenn. – NASCAR postponed the Monster Energy Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway because of heavy rain that is not expected to let up Sunday. The race was pushed until 1 p.m. Monday.

Weather has been a problem all weekend at Bristol, where Friday qualifications were washed out. On Saturday, the Xfinity Series race had a lengthy stoppage for rain.

Cup points leader Kyle Larson will start on the pole next to Chase Elliott.

Bristol officials this year applied a VHT resin to the track surface that is intended to enhance grip. But the nonstop rain has washed away most of the tire rubber accumulated through three practice sessions.

It’s unclear whether both the preferred bottom lane and top line will work on Monday. If only one lane works, it could turn into a throwback Bristol race in which bumping is the only way to pass a car.

Larson said he expected NASCAR to call a competition caution early in the first stage Monday to check tire wear.

“I’m sure we will all pit probably because it has shown a lot of tire wear on the left side, so I’m sure everybody will pit,” Larson said. “We will see if people take two or four or whatever, but it kind of just depends on what position you are in at that point if you are going to take two or four (tires).”

Five-time Bristol winner Kurt Busch called the rain “a blessing in disguise.”

“The track was talking about laying down more VHT, and they can’t do it while it’s wet,” Busch said. “The VHT is like a grip applicator and you have to heat it up to make it work, so in the drag-racing world the guys do a burnout through it and you have that stripe that you just heat it up, and that’s what has to happen for us oval guys. We have to have more cars out there to heat it up, so it’s going to be like ice when we first start off, and then the grip will come back once we do heat it up after this rain.

The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Josef Newgarden put himself in position to battle teammate Will Power to the end. He didn’t need to.

Newgarden kept Team Penske on top Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park with his second Indy Grand Prix of Alabama win in three years.

The new Penske driver didn’t allow Scott Dixon an opening over the final stretch to give Chevrolet its first win of the season. Newgarden had moved to the front for the first time when Power was forced to pit with a punctured left rear tire with 14 laps to go.

“It was a tough day. It was not easy to win this one,” said Newgarden, who picked up his fourth victory. “Obviously, we got a little bit of help there at the end with Will, but I don’t think you know how it would have played out.

“Will certainly had a great shot. He was in good position to win this race, and for him to have issues is always tough to see.”

Newgarden was overshadowed by his own teammates coming into the race that’s only three hours from his hometown of Hendersonville, Tennessee. Power, the pole sitter, Helio Castroneves and defending champion Simon Pagenaud were the top three qualifiers after small Honda teams won the first two races.

Pagenaud finished third and Castroneves fourth.

Newgarden’s work was far from done after Power headed to pit lane, with Dixon a near-annual contender on the road course.

It remains even more of a Penske-dominated track with Newgarden’s addition, and one where Dixon can’t get over the hump. Dixon has five second-place finishes and seven podium finishes in eight years.

SAN ANTONIO – Kevin Chappell made an 8-foot putt on the final hole to win the Valero Texas Open by one stroke Sunday.

Chappell had a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to finish at 12 under for the tournament, edging Brooks Koepka at TPC San Antonio to earn his first PGA Tour victory in his 180th career start.

“A big relief,” the 30-year-old Chappell said. “There’s been quite the monkey on my back for some time now about getting that first win. And to take that off and not have to answer those questions anymore is nice.”

Koepka, a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team last year, was looking for his second PGA Tour win. He had the best round of the day at 7-under 65.

Before Chappell came down the 18th hole, Koepka had birdied the hole with a 3-foot putt to tie him.

“It’s hard to win out here – everybody knows that,” Koepka said. “I’m knocking on the door to get my second win. It’s nice for Kevin to get his first win. That’s pretty cool.”

Second-round co-leader Tony Finau got in a position to tie Koepka when he birdied four of five holes on the back nine. But his par-bogey finish

Finau closed with birdies on four of five holes coming to the 17th. He was just a shot behind Chappell’s lead, but he parred there and drove next to a cactus bush on the 18th. He punched out to the fairway, removed cactus needles from his leg, then put his approach into the creek. He took a penalty drop, and his bogey ended his chances.

Chappell clung to a one-shot lead after Koepka birdied No. 11 with a 23foot putt and another one at the next hole putting inside 7 feet.

In a year of sweeping change at Notre Dame, hope springs

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – This year of sweeping change for Notre Dame passed another mile marker Saturday with the Blue and Gold spring game.

The 20,000 or so fans that took in the two-hour intra-squad scrimmage at Notre Dame Stadium on a bright day got a glimpse of a promising first-year starting quarterback and a taste of the schemes being implemented by new coordinators on both sides of the ball.

The most meaningful ways the Fighting Irish are being transformed after a 4-8 season – the worst in seven years under coach Brian Kelly – have been happening behind the scenes.

Notre Dame’s biggest issue in 2016, according to Kelly and his players, was an inability to respond to adversity. The Irish too often crumbled when things got tough.

That’s what Kelly was trying to fix with a massive staff overhaul last winter. Understandably, the culture change is still a work in progress that will continue through the summer.

“There really isn’t a next stage as much as we’ll get back into our training,” Kelly said after the Gold beat the Blue, 27-14. “The physical training will continue, but through that physical training obviously fatigue, stress, grit, how we handle all those things through our training is going to be building the kind of football players that we want.

That can handle what goes on in the fourth quarter. That can finish strong.

And that’ll be the next part of our total preparation for our team.”

Kelly hired six new assistants in the offseason, including strength and conditioning coach Matt Balis. Chip Long now runs the offense and calls the plays. Mike Elko is in charge of the defense and Brian Polian was brought in to be special teams coordinator.

The 55-year-old Kelly is taking a more holistic approach. His players

wanted him to be more of a presence, create more structure and challenge them more.

Kelly said the spring game was about taking the teaching into a competitive environment. Results don’t mean much, but the change on the field is real, too.

A RPO opened up Chris Finke down the middle for a 37yard pass from No. 2 quarterback Ian Book. Kelly, who coached from the field behind the quarterbacks, said he had to remind players to flip the ball to the line judge, not the side judge, after they were tackled to save a few extra seconds.

Elko’s defense showed some of the up-the-middle pressure that worked so well at Wake Forest, and Tranquill looked like a natural in the Rover position that is a key to the new scheme. He burst through the guard and tackle on one play for a tackle for loss.

Brandon Wimbush, a former fourstar recruit, is taking over at quarterback for DeShone Kizer. The junior was 22 for 32 for 303 yards with two interceptions on Saturday, playing against the first-team defense.

Elko would seem to have the tougher task of the two new coordinators.

The offense seems to have ample playmakers around Wimbush. On defense, more need to emerge – like defensive end Daelin Hayes. The 255-pounder also looked the part in the spring game, providing steady pressure on Wimbush.

But this spring has been more about working on the big picture at Notre Dame before a pivotal season for Kelly.

BEDFORD PARK – Last year, 6,755 postal employees were victimized by dogs, an increase of 206 attacks over the previous year. But that number pales in comparison to the many children that are bitten each year.

The American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics report that small children, the elderly and letter carriers, in that order, are the most frequent victims of dog bites.

Children are the majority of victims and are 900 times more likely to be bitten than letter carriers.

How to be a responsible dog owner

• Obedience training can teach dogs proper behavior and help owners control their dogs in any situation.

• When the letter carrier comes to your home, keep your dog inside, away from the door, in another room or on a leash.

• Dogs can be protective of their territory and may interpret the actions of letter carriers as a threat.

• Take precautions when accepting mail in the presence of your pet.

• Neutered dogs are less likely to bite. Humane Society of the United States statistics reflect that dogs that have not been spayed or neutered are up to three times more likely to be involved in a biting incident than neutered or spayed dogs.

• Dogs that haven’t been properly socialized, receive little attention or handling, or are left tied up for long periods of time frequently turn into biters.

• While letter carriers are discouraged from petting animals, people who choose to pet dogs should always let a dog see and sniff them before petting the animal.

Long-term use of antihistamines to treat insomnia is not advised

Dear Doctor: I’m leery of sleep drugs, so I’ve been taking Benadryl to help me sleep.

Now I read it should be taken only for a limited time. What’s the story on this drug?

Dear Reader: Diphenhydramine HCL, or Benadryl, is a sedating antihistamine. The medication has been used since 1946 for allergies, but because it is sleep-inducing, people also have used it to help them sleep.

Unlike the allergy medications Claritin, Zyrtec or Allegra, this medication blocks histamine receptors in the brain. Histamine is necessary to promote wakefulness, motivation and goal-directed behaviors; when the receptors for histamine are blocked, drowsiness occurs. Many companies have marketed diphenhydramine and doxylamine (another sedating antihistamine) for insomnia under different brand names.

Researchers have conducted many studies of diphenhydramine for insomnia, but most have been small. One of the larger studies looked at individuals with an average age of 44 years who had mild insomnia. In this study, people either took diphenhydramine or a placebo. The diphenhydramine group switched to a placebo after two weeks. The participants kept diaries of how long it took them to fall asleep, their total sleep time and the number of times they awoke.

Researchers found no difference between the drug group and the placebo group in the time needed to fall asleep. However, sleep quality improved significantly among those taking the drug. Total sleep time also improved with diphenhydramine, but only by 29 minutes. The authors did not find significant adverse effects and did not find rebound insomnia when the participants stopped diphenhydramine. The authors concluded that, for the short term, the drug

does have benefit in treating insomnia.

As for the merits or risks of taking the drug for more than two weeks, there are no good long-term trials of diphenhydramine, and prolonged use raises the potential for problems. Further, two weeks of using sedating antihistamines can create some degree of tolerance to their sleep-inducing effects, so their effectiveness may wane.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine does not recommend the use of antihistamines for chronic insomnia. Among the effects of sedating antihistamines are constipation, retention of urine in the bladder and a drop of blood pressure upon standing.

Further, diphenhydramine’s half-life, the time it takes for the drug to lose half of its activity, is 9 hours in adults, but 13.5 hours in elderly individuals. That means the drug still is having effects long after one awakes.

Sedating antihistamines also can cause grogginess, confusion and memory loss. This is especially concerning in the elderly.

I would re-evaluate whether diphenhydramine is really helping you sleep. You also should consider whether the medication is causing any side effects. Other medications can be used as sleep aids, but the best move for the long term is to improve your sleep hygiene, such as using the bed for sleep and not for watching television.

Afterward, the man told me he had an STD. He then proceeded to explain why he told me after instead of being upfront with me. I’m paranoid about that kind of thing, and he knew it before we became intimate. Now I’m worried I have it too, and I’m breaking up with him because of it. I feel he should’ve told me first and left the choice to me if I wanted to risk getting his STD or not. I’m angry and upset. I don’t know how to go about talking it out with him and maintain the friendship between his son and mine.

Dear Abby: As an aging adult, I have encountered a situation for the first time I’m sure will come up again. An acquaintance has just passed away. It was someone I didn’t know well.

We would like to send a donation to honor the deceased. However, the only organization mentioned in the obituary is one we cannot support.

Should we ignore our beliefs and honor the individual, or is there some other way to honor the person while maintaining (and funding) our “side” of this issue? – First-Time Dilemma Dear F.T.D.: You do not have to send a donation to the organization mentioned in the announcement. Another way to honor the deceased would be to write a short note to the family expressing how much you admired their loved one and offering condolences.

Last week, we looked at one-level and two-level negative doubles. But what happens when the overcall is at the three- or four-level?

In today’s deal, after South opens one heart and West overcalls four spades, what should North do?

With 13 points, North cannot pass.

At the two- or three-level, North would bid hearts, but to respond with five hearts risks ending in a 5-1 (5-0?) fit. The opening side needs to be more flexible.

North should double, just saying that he has too many points to pass, but no better bid to make. It is not for penalty, suggesting two or three trump tricks, because he cannot have those unless West is crazy. How does the opener react?

With a balanced hand, he passes and hopes that the contract fails.

But if he has a distributional hand, he bids, knowing that partner will put down some useful goodies in the dummy.

Here, South’s two spades are worrying, but he rebids five clubs, which is passed out. (Note that four spades doubled costs only 500.)

West cashes his two top spades, then shifts to a heart.

South must play the trump suit without loss. When you have nine trumps missing only the queen, normally you play for the drop: eight ever, nine nearly never. But here declarer knows that West has eight spades to East’s one. This swings the odds solidly in favor of a second-round club finesse. It is almost three times a better play to lead a club to dummy’s ace, then to run the club jack through East. Bingo -- plus 600.
