JOLIET – Police had an armed standoff Sunday night that stretched into early Monday with a Joliet man who would not come out of his house.

Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said officers were called at 9:45 p.m. by relatives of Victor Hicks, a 61-year-old resident of the 1300 block of Brentwood Place.

“The subject would not respond or answer the door and has medical conditions that made his relatives concerned for his well-being,” Roechner said. “The family asked officers to force entry so they announced, ‘Police,’ and broke a rear win-

Roechner said that officers heard a shot from inside the residence and a second shot when they said, “Police,” again.

They set up a perimeter and called SWAT and hostage negotiation teams to the scene. Roechner said two more shots were fired while the teams were en route.

“The negotiators called the residence’s landline and held it open for several hours, but the subject did not answer them,” Roechner said.

At 4:38 a.m. the SWAT team forced open the front door and flooded the house with tear gas. Hicks came out from the garage about 25 minutes later and was taken into custody without incident, Ro-

echner said. He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for an evaluation. No one else was inside the residence.

Roechner said police waited until later Monday for the tear gas to disperse before using a search warrant to enter the house.

According to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Hicks remained hospitalized Monday afternoon, but faced arrest on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing a peace officer.

State’s attorney’s office spokesman Chuck Pelkie said Monday that the incident was still under investigation and other charges could be filed.

Channahon Township man charged with murder

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Channahon Township man has been charged with murder in the Friday shooting of a recent parolee at a party.

Judge Art Smigielski on Monday ordered James F. Hess be held at the Will County Jail on $1 million bond. Hess, 65, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Nathan A. Hofkamp and faces a sentence of life in prison.

Hess lived with Hofkamp’s mother in the 25000 block of Canal Road. On

Friday, Hofkamp, 29, was released from the Vienna Correction Center, where he’d been serving time for 2016 convictions for theft and aggravated assault in Cook County, according to the Illinois Department James F. Hess of Corrections.

“There was a party at the residence and the party got rowdy,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Messina told Smiegielski. “[Hess] came up from the basement with a gun to quiet them down and shot the victim.”

Hess, who appeared via video from

the county jail, hesitantly gave his name for the record when the judge asked and replied with a blank, “Yes,” when Smigielski asked if he understood he must appear in court if he is released on bail.

Defense attorneys Edward Masters and Patricia Kalkanis were in court to represent Hess. Masters said Hess’ two sisters and daughter were willing to contribute toward his bail.

“His only prior [criminal record] is from a family situation unrelated to this situation,” Masters said.

Court records show Hess has battery and vandalism cases from 2009 to 2011.

LINCOLN-WAY ON WATCH LIST District officials working toward budget surplus

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 will be able to rise from the lowest state financial rating by building back budget surpluses only borrowing less in short-term debt, its superintendent said.

For a third year in a row, District 210 was given watch status last week by the Illinois State Board of Education. When District 210 was first given the rating in 2015, rumors abounded that a school would close, and when they came true, it set off a tumultuous period for the district.

Over the years, the district spent far more than it took in, incurring multimillion-dollar deficits in its budget and depleting its fund balances, which led to the board deciding in 2015 to close Lincoln-Way North High School as a

cost-cutting measure.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said the district will begin to improve its finances by running surpluses annually to work its way from watch status to higher state ratings. District officials expect to make a surplus of about $2 million this year.

“It’s going to take a couple of years to get to that place,” he said.

District 210 is one of 19 districts statewide on the watch list. Chicago Public Schools has been on the watch list for the last three years, and Millburn District 24 in Lake County has been on it since 2007.

Tingley said the rating will have “little effect” on the district. When the district first received its rating in 2015, district officials put together a deficit reduction plan to avoid being put on a state financial oversight panel.

He said the district continues to meet

quarterly with ISBE representatives to track the district’s progress. ISBE representatives review the district’s cash flows, net projections, fund balances, savings and other items.

“As they track our progress, they’ve been satisfied with the direction we’re heading,” Tingley said.

Jackie Matthews, ISBE spokeswoman, stated in an email that the state agency has worked with District 210 to create financial projections, run records for potential budget reductions and make a financial plan for creditors.

“ISBE staff spent a considerable amount of time with the district last fall and winter and have been constantly available by phone,” she stated.

Last year, the district was one of six on the state’s watch list – along with CPS – that were investigated to determine whether they met the criteria for financial difficulty, which District 210

did not. If it had, the district might have received more state intervention.

According to a May 11 ISBE memo, district officials outlined their plan to address budget deficits, which included closing North to reduce operating expenses in staffing, maintenance, transportation and other costs.

ISBE officials noted in the memo that the district would need to issue tax anticipation warrants – or short-term borrowing – for cash flow, which the district has done this fiscal year. Last month, the board approved issuing up to $3 million in tax anticipation warrants.

“We are living off of money that we anticipate getting in the future,” Tingley said.

Joliet to vote on Houbolt interchange contract

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is about to take another step forward on the Houbolt Road bridge and interchange project.

The Joliet City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a $1.9 million contract with TranSystems Corp. for engineering services on the interchange at Interstate 80.

The cost is covered by $21 million in state funding for engineering and construction on the interchange, according to a city memo on the contract.

Councilman Larry Hug at a council workshop meeting Monday noted that the contract with TranSystems is within the $2.1 million maximum the state is allowing for phase one and two engineering costs.

The entire project is estimated to cost between $171 million and $191 million with most of the expense being a bridge to be built over the Des Plaines River connecting Houbolt Road with CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet. CenterPoint Properties is to build the toll bridge that would provide semitrailer access to I-80.

City Manager Jim Hock told the council that the divergent diamond interchange at Houbolt and I-80 will “create a smoother traffic flow onto I-80, especially for trucks.”

The estimated cost of the interchange and Houbolt Road improvements are to be paid by the state unless costs exceed the $21 million budget.

The council, however, in January did approve a $398,000 contract at the city’s expense with T.Y. Lin Interna-

tional to act as its project manager.

Hock said a construction timetable has not yet been set for the project.

According to the city memo on the engineering contract, six firms were invited to submit qualifications for the project. Three firms were interviewed, and TranSystems is being recommended for the contract.

Kansas City-based TranSystems a year ago was awarded a $150,000 city engineering contract for the Chicago Street redesign project downtown.

Second animal control staffer

Also on Tuesday, the council is slated to vote on creating a second animal compliance coordinator to work in the office of the mayor.

The city council in February approved the creation of the position of animal compliance coordinator to

serve as a liaison between the city and Joliet Township Animal Control.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said that position has not been filled, but it has been determined that two people will be needed to handle the workload.

O’Dekirk said both people will be hired on a part-time basis.

City manager search

GovHR USA CEO Joellen Earl met briefly with the council to discuss a $21,000 contract to recruit a new city manager.

Hock gave notice on April 6 that he will retire May 3.

The council held a special meeting last week and agreed to hire GovHR USA, which was the recruitment firm that brought Hock to Joliet in 2013.

The contract goes to the council for a vote on Tuesday.

Plainfield trustees approve landscaping contract

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board meeting Monday night was well-attended, with many local students on hand for government-related homework assignments.

At about 23 minutes, it was also one of the shortest meetings in weeks, with the board unanimously approving several measures with little discussion.

The board approved a 2017 landscaping contract for the village’s Route 59 right of way with Local Lawn Care and Landscaping at a cost of $46,750.

There were five bids submitted to the village, of which the selected company bid about $6,000 less than the rest of the competition.

Director of Public Works Allen Persons noted that last year’s price was over $50,000 and the village hasn’t worked with the contractor before, but the city of Naperville has and is pleased with the work that was done. The company will landscape right of way in the Route 59 corridor from south Plainfield north through Naperville after getting approved by both municipalities, Persons said.

Trustee Bill Lamb cautioned that the village should watch the quality that it gets for the significantly lower price. Persons said the village will do a complete evaluation of the landscaping throughout the year.

Police Chief John Konopek said the department has used the service since 1993 and never had any complaints from officers, adding that most of them have used the service their entire careers.

“We use it to train our officers but

also to meet the state standards, especially under the Police and Community Relations Improvement Act that was passed about a year ago,” Konopek said.

“There are several mandatory trainings listed in that act that police officers have to accomplish, whether on a yearly basis or every three years, and so forth.

Most of those requirements fit within

the Policy Law Institute training.”

The department negotiated a threeyear deal at a lower cost per year than if it were three one-year deals. The usual rate is $128 per officer but Plainfield is being charged $95 per officer for agreeing to a three-year pact. With 53 officers, that saves a total of more than $5,000 over that span, Konopek said.

Silver Cross names Colby new president and CEO

bokon@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Ruth Colby, already a familiar face in the community, will become the next president and CEO at Silver Cross Hospital.

Silver Cross announced Monday that Colby, chief strategy officer and senior vice president of business development at the hospital, will replace Paul Pawlak Ruth Colby when he retires Sept. 30.

Pawlak, who has been CEO for 27 years, announced his retirement plan last year.

Colby herself has been at the hospital since 2005 and is well known in the

community.

“I am honored to have been selected and I thank the board of directors for their endorsement of and confidence in me,” Colby stated in a news release announcing her selection.

Colby also is a member of the Will County Mobilizing for Action through Planning & Partnerships Collaborative, the University of Chicago Medicine Cancer Research Women’s Board and the Advocate Physicians Partners board.

She has an MBA degree from the University of Chicago.

Colby is past president of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, an American Hospital Association membership group. She has held leadership positions at University of Chicago Medicine and Solucient (now Truven Health Analytics).

decline equating to a reduction of $5.2 million year over year. They estimated having $814,000 in operations and maintenance savings as of March, of which $469,000 was the result of running three schools instead of four.

One challenge the district faces is delays in mandated categorical payments, a problem other districts across the state are also experiencing. The state payments that are earmarked for special education personnel, transportation and other costs have been delayed.

Tingley said that by the close of this fiscal year, the district will be owed about $1.7 million in delayed payments.

He said the district has made sure to budget conservatively.

“I think we’re still in a position to run a surplus even with a shortage from the state,” he said.

Another challenge is the district’s “junk” bond rating, affected by the last several years of the district’s audits and its annual financial reports filed with the state. Tingley said building surpluses will improve its credit rating.

“We have to run surpluses for the next several years to increase our cash position and then that will in turn improve our credit rating,” he said.

Former Lockport mayor Tim Murphy dead at 45 LOCKPORT – Former Lockport Mayor Tim Murphy has died.

Murphy, the mayor from 2005 to 2009, died Monday morning, according to a news release from the city of Lockport. Paramedics were called to a Lockport home at 6:57 a.m. Murphy was then taken by the Lockport Township Fire Protection District to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Murphy, 45, was known for working in cooperation with residents to help transform the city’s downtown and the new Interstate 355 corridor, which opened in 2007, according to the news release.

“The proposed large-scale retail development at 159th Street just west of Interstate 355 was visionary at the time to give motorists traveling along the expressway a reason to turn onto the interchange and stop to do some shopping or get a bite to eat,” the news release stated. “Today, it is the eco-

nomic engine that is driving growth for both industrial and commercial businesses east and west of I-355.”

Murphy was only 33 when he was elected. He did not seek re-election in 2009, saying he wanted to re-enter the real estate field, according to media reports at the time.

Murphy started a downtown Lockport revitalization committee shortly after he was elected. The efforts to improve the downtown continue, with Mayor Steven Streit at the helm.

Longtime Alderman Brian Smith said he was shocked to hear the news.

“I had the pleasure of serving under him, as we both were elected in 2005 and served four-year terms,” Smith said. “Tim was a hands-on mayor who brought business skills to the city that aided in moving forward on many projects.”

Smith said he’d like to express his condolences to Murphy’s family.

City Administrator Ben Benson said funeral services have yet to be scheduled.

Teacher facing child grooming charge released on bond

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A former Shorewood schoolteacher who allegedly sent inappropriate text messages to a 13-year-old girl has been released from the Will County Jail.

Lemuel V. Elechicon, 51, of Crest Hill, was released after posting $10,000 of his $100,000 bond on a charge of child

grooming. Defense attorney Donald DeWilkins on Monday told Judge Art Smigielski that Elechicon is no longer working at Trinity Christian School.

Shorewood Deputy Lemuel V. Chief Jason Barten said Elechicon police were notified early last week that Elechicon and the teen

had been exchanging text messages for about two months. The girl’s parents contacted police after being notified by parents of a friend of the victim, Barten said.

Barten said investigators interviewed Elechicon on Friday morning.

According to the school’s website, Elechicon was a sixth-grade sponsor and middle school teacher who has taught fourth through eighth grades. He spe-

cialized in teaching “science and biblical creationism,” according to the website.

Smigielski ordered Elechicon to have no contact with any minors or the school while he is out on bond.

Barten said Monday that police are unaware of any other inappropriate contact between Elechicon and other minors, but the matter remains under investigation.

Sister Kathryne Francis Berger, OSF (1933 2017) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on April 14, 2017.

A native of Hammond, Indiana, she was one of four children born to Mary (Ruppel) and Robert Berger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Mary Rolanda Fisher.

She is survived by her brothers, Robert of Brandon, Florida, and Richard, of Summerville, South Carolina.

Sister Kay Francis was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 40 years. Sister Kay Francis attended SS. Peter and Paul Parish School in Merrillville, Indiana, and St. Francis High School in Fort Wayne.

She earned a B.A. in Art from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She earned her Master of Fine Arts at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and took additional coursework in art at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Before entering the Joliet Franciscans, Sister Kay Francis was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in Mishawaka, Indiana, where she ministered as a teacher in grade school, and taught art at the high school

Arthur W. Coote Jr., age 51, died suddenly at home Thursday, April 13, 2017.

He was born February 13, 1966, to the late Lynnette (nee Serena) and Arthur Coote Sr. in Joliet where he was raised and educated, a 1984 graduate of Joliet West High School.

Survived by his son, Ryan (Stephanie) Coote of Joliet; grandson, Chase; sister, Sherryl Coote; brother, Robert Coote; two nieces, Hallie Coote and Amy Stanak. Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Coote.

An electrician by trade, Art was also proficient with HVAC and could fix most anything.

He had a strong work ethic, which he instilled in his son. A member of the percussion section of the Joliet American Legion Band. In his free time, he could be found watching Disney animated movies – his favorite – “Madagascar.”

In his younger days, he enjoyed riding dirt bikes and four wheelers with his son.

As it was Art’s wish, cremation rites have been accorded and private family services will be held at a later date.

At times, Art could be construed as having “rough edges,” but his kind expression of donation to the Gift of Hope will be realized by many who will benefit from his thoughtfulness.

Thomas J. Adamski, age 61, of Plainfield, passed away suddenly Sunday, April 16, 2017, at home.

Born August 10, 1955, in Chicago, to Chester and Eleanor (Nowaczyk) Adamski, he was a graduate of Maine South High School.

He worked for the United States Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 2008. Tom will be remembered for being a good husband and being very supportive of his family. He enjoyed playing golf, poker, and going bowling.

Many of her art pieces can be found in churches, convents, schools and homes throughout the United States and Brazil. On August 1, 2015, Sister Kay Francis was named Artist Laureate of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate.

Crusader for healthy school lunches dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO – Dana Woldow, who drew national attention when she began a fight to rid California schools of junk food, has died. She was 65.

Woldow died Monday in her San Francisco home. She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

A mother of three and school volunteer, Woldow was horrified when she saw how easily available soda, potato chips, ice cream and other junk foods

were in San Francisco public schools.

In 2002, she became a crusader for healthy school lunches and with a group of parents, teachers and students formed the school district’s Student Nutrition and Physical Activity committee, which tackled issues of childhood obesity and physical fitness.

“She countered every lie by the fastfood industry, everything that schools did to stigmatize kids needing a free lunch, and put the focus squarely on getting the best nutrition possible for

Ronald is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Jean McDowell; his children, Diane (Pat) Duggins, Scott (Michelle) McDowell; 6 grandchildren, Derek, Ryan, Rachel Duggins, and Chelsea, Adam, and Zach McDowell. A brother, Roger (June) McDowell; and nephews, Reid and Kip McDowell also survive.

Ronald worked for Amoco Chemical for 33 years. He has enjoyed retirement for the past 25 years, especially enjoying fishing and shooting and growing his garden.

Grade School and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School. He was the Director of Central Medical Lab for 30 years. Mark’s grandchildren were a very important part of his life and he enjoyed spending every minute he could with them. He was an avid boater; he also enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, attending JCA football games, riding his motorcycle and flying planes. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be truly missed.

“I have many advantages, so I don’t need to fear losing my job for speaking out,” she once told the newspaper. “I can barge onto a high school campus, for example, and just wander around looking for junk food vending. I don’t need to fear reprisals from anyone because, really, what could they do?”

Woldow is survived by her husband of 37 years; and three sons, Max of San Francisco, Samuel of Mountain View and Jacob of Seattle, all graduates of San Francisco public schools.

Jim Fitzgerald, longtime AP writer and editor, dies

NEW YORK – Jim Fitzgerald, a longtime Associated Press writer and editor who helped shape the news service’s coverage of stories from terrorist attacks to the evolving landscape of aging, died Monday. He was 66.

Fitzgerald, who worked for the AP for 45 years before retiring in December, had been fighting leukemia for more than a year and a half. He died at a New York hospital, said his wife, Ellen Nimmons, a manager at AP’s headquarters.

During decades of covering New York City’s northern suburbs and editing local and national stories, Fitzgerald was known for handling some of the top news of the day with a can-do demeanor, professionalism, fairness and a gentlemanly grace. His trademark answer to an everyday “How are you?”: “Never better.”

In a telling measure of Fitzgerald’s generosity and commitment, the New York journalism organization Society of the Silurians honored him in 2014 with its Peter Kihss Award, which recognizes distinguished reporters who mentor younger colleagues.

With that award, he told the group, “I have made it to the big time.”

Fitzgerald began working for the AP in part-time and temporary jobs as a Manhattan College student in 1971, then joined the news cooperative full time in New York in 1973, writing stories for radio and TV use. He moved on to what was then called the General Desk, editing stories for national and international distribution and helping supervise coverage of major news – and meeting Nimmons.

Shortly before their 1982 wedding, Fitzgerald began working in the New York City bureau as the day super-

visor, the point person editing many city stories and making sure the bureau was on top of breaking news. And there would be plenty of it, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six people and injured more than 1,000. Eight years later, he would help cover the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, telling the stories of survivors and others. By then, he was the AP’s correspondent in the city’s northern suburbs, an appointment made in 1996.

From his base in Westchester County, he covered the Indian Point power plant, train crashes, a major federal housing segregation case and more.

He “brought us characters in government with all our blemishes,” but “we always knew we’d get a fair reporting,” said former Westchester District Attorney and judge Jeanine Pirro, now a Fox News personality.

She said Fitzgerald’s work made an impact on “how the public viewed good and evil and how they perceived the delivery of justice in our world, causing them to become engaged in the fight.”

In recent years, Fitzgerald staked out a popular beat on aging. A reporter who loved the writing part of the job, he went beyond statistics and policy to report on deeply personal, often thought-provoking aspects of growing old.

He told of senior citizens buddying up as roommates for not only savings but also for safety; Death Cafe gatherings of people seeking to talk comfortably about life’s end; elderly drug addicts and the delicate problems involved in treating them; a night camp for dementia victims who don’t sleep after dark; and the touching, funny, sometimes snarky messages people leave behind in prewritten obituaries.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – More than 300 state employees, including two lawmakers, are delinquent in paying their taxes for the 2014 calendar year, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Department of Revenue officials told the Chicago Tribune that the 312 state workers are getting their salaries but still haven’t filed returns for calendar year 2014, which were due two years ago.

Each of the employees has already been given a $250 penalty for delinquency and faces an additional penalty equivalent to 10 percent of any taxes

Police torture claims overwhelm Illinois investigation panel

CHICAGO – The Illinois panel tasked with reviewing claims of police torture is overwhelmed with cases and short on funding, especially with the state budget impasse.

A recent law change expanded the Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission’s jurisdiction beyond claims of torture related to disgraced former Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge to anyone convicted in Cook County based on confessions allegedly coerced through torture, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Commission spokesman Michael Theodore said over 180 new claims have been filed since the law went into effect last summer. Commission staff also must investigate over 120 cases filed under the old law.

The commission has sought help from law firms, law school interns and high school students who do clerical work.

“We can’t deal with those numbers the way we’re set up now,” said Rob Olmstead, the commission’s executive director. “I think the Legislature’s intention was laudable. They wanted to bring potential relief to what they thought was a wider pool of people who needed it, and that’s great, but now we need to practically find a way

The lawmakers appear to be the highest-ranking stragglers out of thousands of Illinois workers whom the revenue agency originally identified and contacted after matching W-2 tax forms to payroll records.

The department declined to name any of the workers because tax returns are confidential.

Police: Man killed in shooting at Chicago train platform

CHICAGO – Chicago police say a man is dead after an early-morning shooting on a city train platform.

Authorities say a 33-year-old man was arguing with another person on the Chicago Transit Authority platform around 2:40 a.m. Monday at a Red Line stop on the city’s South Side. Police allege the second person pulled out a handgun and shot the 33-year-old in the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Witnesses told police they heard five or six shots.

Officials tweaking new licenses plates to make more legible

SPRINGFIELD – State officials say that they’re making changes to Illinois’ newly designed license plates to make them easier to read.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported Secretary of State Jesse White’s office has received complaints.

The new licenses, designed by White’s office, were rolled out in January. White says the old plates were becoming less reflective, making them harder for authorities to see.

The new plates feature Chicago’s skyline, a barn with a windmill, the Capitol and part of Abraham Lincoln’s face.

But some have criticized the new plates. They object to the design combination and say it’s hard to read.

White’s spokesman Dave Druker says future batches of new plates will have darker ink, among other changes.

The office will gradually send replacements for passenger vehicles at no extra cost.

Court rule change on pooled accounts raises $1 million

SPRINGFIELD – A rule change governing legal clients’ funds made by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2015 has generated more than $1 million for legal help for the poor.

The court adjusted a rule dealing with unidentified funds in pooled

tollway employees, nine Department of Employment Security workers, 17 Department of Transportation employees, 24 Department of Children and Family Services workers, 54 Department of Corrections employees and 119 Department of Human Services workers.

There also are 13 employees under Democratic Secretary of State Jesse White, one under Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan and four court staffers.

The largest agencies tended to have the most tardy tax filers as they did when the newspaper reviewed a similar agency effort done more than 15 years ago.

No Iowa charges to be filed in gun death of Illinois man

CAMANCHE, Iowa – An eastern Iowa prosecutor has decided not to charge a man who shot to death an Illinois resident.

Authorities say 25-year-old Derick Carroll, of Clinton, shot 22-year-old Nicholas Luskey, of Fulton, Illinois, on Feb. 1. Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf said in a news release the shooting was done in self-defense.

Wolf says Luskey was watching the home of a woman he’d dated several months previously and pulled Carroll from the woman’s car after he blocked them from driving away. Wolf says Carroll and Luskey were struggling when Luskey got his hands around the barrel of a handgun Carroll was legally carrying, so Carroll fired, fearing that if he lost control of it he and the woman would be killed.

Luskey died later at a hospital.

Man accused of Facebook video killing said he ‘just snapped’

CLEVELAND – In a rambling video, Steve Stephens said, “I snapped, I just snapped.” But as the manhunt dragged on Monday for the man accused of posting Facebook footage of himself killing a retiree, police were unable to explain what set him off.

“Only Steve knows that,” Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said as authorities posted a $50,000 reward for Stephens’ capture in the shooting of Robert Godwin Sr., a 74-yearold former foundry worker.

In the video, Stephens blamed a former girlfriend he had lived with, saying he woke up last week and “couldn’t take it anymore.” But in a statement Monday, the woman shed little light on what might have gone wrong and said Stephens was good to her and her children.

As for the shooting victim, Godwin appeared to have been selected at random, gunned down while picking up aluminum cans Sunday afternoon after spending Easter with some of his children.

A manhunt that started in Cleveland’s gritty east side expanded rapidly into a nationwide search for Stephens, a 37-year-old job counselor who worked with teens and young adults, police said.

“He could be nearby. He could be far away or anywhere in between,” FBI agent Stephen Anthony said.

Law enforcement officials said his cellphone signal was last detected on Sunday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles east of Cleveland.

Police reported getting dozens and dozens of tips, and nine schools in Philadelphia were locked down Monday while authorities investigated possible sightings of Stephens. But they said there was no sign he was actually there.

Some of those who know Stephens described him as pleasant and kind, while some said he had a gambling problem. He filed for bankruptcy two years ago.

In another video posted to Facebook, Stephens said that he gambled away everything and that he and his girlfriend had planned to marry but didn’t, without saying why.

“He got along with everybody, so it’s just unbelievable what happened,” said Alexis Lee, a friend who saw Stephens last week.

Dear Mr. Berko: One of the men I admire is Claes Fornell, whom I met at Duke University. He developed the American Customer Satisfaction Index, or ASCI, and also manages an exchange-traded fund by that name.

He purchases companies for his ETF that have the highest customer satisfaction rate, using his patented algorithm to identify these stocks.

The customer satisfaction rate is computed from a survey of 100,000 consumers, and this is a brilliant way to pick the stocks that consumers like best. Because these consumers will be repeat customers, they’ll spread the word.

This will increase revenues and profits, as well as the company’s ability to charge higher prices than their rivals for similar products. The hope is that this pushes the stock price higher. Professor Fornell seems to have a better way to analyze stocks.

The investment you’re asking about is called American Customer Satisfaction Core Alpha ETF (ACSI$28). And it’s my experience that the longer a stock’s name, the worse it performs. ACSI began life in November 2016 and has $17 million in a silly bare-bones portfolio. In a prior life, Phil Bak was a managing director of the New York Stock Exchange. Bak and associates scour the data from Fornell’s American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Then they use this data to create the American Customer Satisfaction Investable Index, which their ETF tracks. How lovely! This index is an economic indicator that measures consumer satisfaction with the goods and services they purchase.

The index covers 43 benchmarks (over 300 companies) – such as airlines, banks, breweries, credit

unions, full-service restaurants, department stores, hotels, hospitals, insurance companies, energy utilities and dating services – and adjusts on a quarterly basis. A company’s weighting in the ETF is restricted to 5 percent of the index and also rebalanced quarterly.

In my opinion, this ETF is a worthless, gigantic yawn – a dippy excuse to be different and attract investors.

ACSI’s 3.4 percent total return since November sadly trails a 6.7 percent total return for the Standard & Poor’s 500 index. About 40 percent of ACSI’s portfolio includes Yahoo, T-Mobile, Dr Pepper, eBay, Vonage and HP. Utilities, consumer cyclical issues and consumer defensive issues make up 60 percent of its performance, which is as exciting as watching a Japanese Kabuki dance.

Bak’s portfolio is sterile, and his methodology needs a shot in the fundament. Though a focus on customers’ satisfaction and becoming repeat customers is unique, it don’t pop my cork. Successful investing uses such time-valued metrics as earnings, book value, cash flow, dividends, operating margins, net profit margins, return of capital, debt and working capital,

which are based on historical performance.

Although past performance is not a guarantee of future results, it’s certainly a better indicator of a company’s future stock price than knowing whether Otto, Paul and Priscilla like Vonage.

So no, a thousand times no, I cannot recommend ACSI shares for two reasons. 1) I don’t share your awe of Fornell. Though his methodology is used by industry movers and shakers to measure how well companies are perceived by the public, it’s not an acceptable way to predict the future performance of companies. 2) Because this ETF is so small (a $17 million portfolio), I doubt it can stay around long enough to be meaningful. The quarterly costs to run ACSI exceed its ability to pay salaries and accounting and operational expenses. Therefore, I suspect that either ACSI will close its doors soon and distribute its assets to shareholders or a larger ETF will take over the portfolio.

dgoss@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East junior right-hander Andrew Hoffmann had allowed a two-run single to Plainfield Central’s Cam Cercone in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday afternoon.

Still, the visiting Bengals were clinging to a 3-2 lead, and with two on and two outs, Hoffmann had a 1-2 count on Central junior third baseman David Ascencio.

He was that close to surviving the inning. Ascencio, though, had other ideas. He launched the next pitch well beyond the left-field fence for a threerun home run that gave the Wildcats a 5-3 lead and eventually a 5-3 Southwest Prairie Conference victory.

“I’m thankful to my teammates for the position they put me in, and I’m happy I was able to come through,” Ascencio said. “I didn’t like the second strike that was called on me. It kind of put me down. I had to get over that.

“I was just glad we were able to come back and get these guys and get to 2-2 in the conference.”

East (11-5, 2-2) had extended a 1-0 lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning as Dalton Crowder delivered a twoout, two-run single off Central starter Kyle Cockrell.

Central (12-4, 2-2) is nothing if not a team that is capable of playing from behind. The Wildcats trailed East, 1-0, entering the seventh inning in the first game of the two-game series and rallied to win, 3-1.

Although Ascencio, who hit his first homer of the season Saturday against Elk Grove, is only a junior,

Central coach John Rosner knows his bat can do serious damage. That’s why he is hitting in the three-hole.

“You just knew something good was going to happen there when David came to the plate,” Rosner said. “He is the kid who hit two homers against Downers Grove South in the regional last year against the lefty [Zack Jones] who went to Illinois. That was after he hadn’t given up a homer all year, and

he hit two off him.

“The one he hit Saturday against Elk Grove was a three-run homer, too.”

“That [fifth] inning started with an error and a walk, and then they had the two big hits,” East coach Adam O’Reel said. “They just beat us. Their kid beat our guy.

“That’s a situation where we had scored three or four runs. That’s us. Hopefully after that, we can play defense and hold ’em. Every game we play is tight. We don’t score a bunch of runs.”

East, which finished with nine hits and stranded 11 runners, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Joey Fox, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup who later had two singles, walked. After Cockrell retired the next two hitters, Sean Hebreard doubled down the left-field line to knock in the run.

Fox’s first single touched off the two-run fifth, which culminated in Crowder’s two-run single, his second hit. But East also left the bases loaded as Cockrell’s stint on the mound ended.

“I don’t think Kyle had his best stuff, but he battled,” Rosner said.

nings for the save. Following a two-out double off the third-base bag by pinch-hitter Frank Bryan, East had runners on second and third in the seventh, but Thornberry struck out the final hitter.

Joey Michaud reached on an error to open the bottom of the fifth, Rocky Pascente walked and with one out, Brandon Callender roped a missile that shortstop David Salazar got a glove on.

The hot ground ball shot high into the air and Callender beat the throw to first for an infield single.

Cercone then worked the count full before hitting his two-run single to center. After Nick Heffernan flied out, Ascencio, who had singled an inning earlier, blasted his three-run homer.

“They’re a good club,” Rosner said of East. “But that’s how we have been.

A 7-1 lead is definitely big, but or whole attitude this year is that we’re not getting down. No game is too far out of reach, so we had to chip away inning by inning and that’s exactly what we did.

“This year I’m definitely focusing on my mental game so coming into this game down 6-1 was a big challenge. It was a big game for me because I wanted to push past that barrier. Yeah, we were down 7-1 after one inning, but this is a game that we wanted. They definitely have a lot of good hitters and it was a challenge, but me and my defense did what we had to do.”

West got a run in the third off Brooklyn Daly when Ames led off with

a double, Karlee Barton (3 for 5, three RBIs) followed with a single and Robb got an RBI sacrifice fly, An inning later, Morgan Gersch (2 for 3) reached on an error and following two hit batters, she scored on a single by Barton.

The Tigers opened the fifth with Smith smashing a homer to left to pull them to with 7-4. Following singles by Budzinski and Gersch, Savana DelRose sacrificed the runners and Budzinski scored on an error on which Tayler Davis reached. Sarah Gersch singled in a run and with two outs, Barton hit into a fielder’s choice to score the go-ahead run.

Central’s best late challenge came in the bottom of the fifth when Maria Connell (2 for 4), Stephanie Weitendorf and Ochoa loaded the bases with no outs. But Budzinski got a strikeout and two grounders to end the threat and retired the side in the next two innings.

“Mentally we just fell apart in that one inning and you just can’t do that against a good team,” Wildcats coach Anne Campbell said. “I kept saying that we had to score some runs since their team would not stop and would battle back.”

PLAINFIELD – When a team is trying to avoid falling way behind in what figures to be a competitive conference race, the last thing they need to have happen to them is to face a big, early deficit against another team that also figures to be the mix for the top spot.

But that’s what happened to Joliet West’s softball team in Monday’s Southwest Prairie Conference game against host Plainfield Central, who scored seven runs in the first inning to grab an early 7-1 advantage.

But the Tigers collected 12 hits in the last six innings and got an excellent relief effort from Sidney Budzinski to not only get back into the contest, but rally for an 8-7 win.

West scored five times in the fifth inning to move in front for good and Budzinski allowed only four hits, while allowing no runs in 61/3 innings to prevent her team from falling three games out in the loss column behind Plainfield East and Plainfield North.

“Plainfield Central came out hitting the ball very well and they were ready

to go,” Tigers coach Heather Suca said.

“Obviously we struggled defensively. we’ve been having that one bad inning and need to clean it up.

“The way that our team stays up and fought back and chipped away at it in every inning, you can’t ask for anything else from these girls. They’re absolutely down. And Sid came in and really pitched a great game after that, which was huge for her. So give her a ton of credit.”

Things started well enough for the Tigers (10-3, 4-2) as Kristen Ames (2 for 4) doubled to open the game and Kiley Robb (3 for 5) advanced her with an infield hit before DeShonte Smith (two RBIs) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly.

But in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats used six hits, a walk and an error to score seven runs. After Brooklyn Daly singled in Sara Peterson (2 for 4) to tie things, she put her team in front when she came home on a bases-loaded walk to Alejandra Ochoa.

Jacky Mathews followed with a three-run double to right and Lauren Blaskey (2 for 3) singled to left to make it a 6-1, while Budzinski entered for

Foltynewicz returning to starting role Tuesday night Of this and that: In the early portion of a bigleague baseball season, teams often get by with four starters rather than five.

That explains why Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz has not started a game for the Atlanta Braves since the opening week of the season. For now, he is the team’s fifth starter, so his turn was skipped for a while because of the number of off days the Braves had.

However, Foltynewicz is scheduled to make his second start Tuesday night against Max Scherzer and the visiting Washington Nationals.

Foltynewicz has appeared in two games, one in relief, and is 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA. In 52/3 innings, he has allowed nine hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts.

• Quick, now, who is the Washington Nationals’ leading hitter as of April 18?

It’s a trick question because he has had only four official at-bats, but right-handed pitcher Tanner Roark (Wilmington) went 2 for 2 Saturday in his most recent start and is hitting .500.

VIEWS Dick Goss Roark is 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA. He has made three starts and has pitched 18 innings, allowing 14 hits and two walks while striking out 12.

• Cincinnati Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central) has pitched in four games in relief and is 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA. In 32/3 innings, he has allowed three hits and one walk while striking out five.

• The local products knocking on the door of the major leagues are first baseman Sam Travis (Providence) and left-handed pitcher Dietrich Enns (Lincoln-Way East).

Playing at Triple-A Pawtucket in the Boston Red Sox organization, Travis is hitting .200 (5 for 25) with three doubles and home run.

Travis’ manager at Pawtucket again this season is Kevin Boles, son of John Boles, former major league manager and longtime executive in player development. John Boles played baseball for Gordie Gillespie

at Lewis, graduating in 1970.

Enns, meanwhile, is pitching for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is 0-0 with an excellent 1.64 ERA. In two starts covering 11 innings, he has yielded only four hits and three walks while striking out eight.

With the value that is placed on left-handed pitching, and considering the success Enns has enjoyed in the upper minor leagues the last couple of seasons, his opportunity to pitch in the big leagues may come sooner than later. The sample size this early in the season is tiny, but a WHIP of 0.64 should catch someone’s eye.

• The annual MLB Draft is scheduled to begin June 12. It will be interesting to see if any of our local products – whether high school, junior college or eligible college players – gets a call sometime during the draft.

• Allie Quigley (Joliet Catholic) and her Fenerbahce basketball team fell to Dynamo Kursk, 77-63, on Sunday in the championship game of the Euroleague Tournament.

Quigley, though, did some good things. She scored a team-high 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting. She was 3 of 5 from 3-point range and made all six free-throw attempts. She also had five rebounds and three assists.

Candace Parker scored 18 points and was the only Fenerbahce player besides Quigley in double figures.

Quigley and the Chicago Sky will open their regular WNBA season May 14 against the Minnesota Lynx.

CHICAGO – Eric Thames homered in his club record-tying fifth straight game and the streaking Milwaukee Brewers turned back the Cubs, 6-3, on Monday night.

Milwaukee never trailed after Thames hit an opposite-field homer to snap a 3-3 tie in the third inning.

Jeromy Burnitz became the first and last Brewers player to homer in five straight games in August, 1997.

Ryan Braun and Jeff Bandy also went deep for Milwaukee, the only team to hit as many as three homers in a game off Cubs’ starter John Lackey (1-2) last season. The victory was the Brewers’ sixth in the last seven games.

The Cubs lost for a fourth straight time, their worst stretch since a fivegame skid from July 5-9 last season.

Slammers add 2 Puerto Rican prospects to roster SUBMITTED REPORT JOLIET – Juan Silva and Edwin Gomez, two prospects from Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, headline the latest additions to the Joliet Slammers’ roster for 2017.

Both outfielders, Silva and Gomez attended the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy for high school. Notable alumni of the academy include Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa. Silva was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 26th round of the 2014 draft and Gomez was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round in 2009.

“Silva has eight years of experience in the minor leagues and has played up to Triple-A,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said. “He has hit for high average and can steal bases. He is a very disciplined hitter who possesses a career .371 on-base percentage. He will be in the middle of our lineup.”

As for Gomez, Isom said, “He can play all over the field. He possesses a lot of experience. This will be his ninth season of professional baseball. We feel like he is just coming into his own as a hitter. He gives us a lot of flexibility with

the way he can play multiple positions.”

Newly acquired catcher Spencer Navin also is entering his first season with the Slammers. He spent 2016 with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round in 2013 out of Vanderbilt. He helped lead the Commodores to the College World Series in 2012 and 2013.

“He is a very good defensive catcher that we will have catch the majority of our games.” Isom said. “He has a strong arm and receives the ball well.”

Other additions include the return of outfield Jimmy Heck and infielder Melvin Rodriguez. Heck hit .313 in seven regular season games last year. Rodriguez returns for his second season with the Slammers. In 2016, he hit six home runs and had 32 RBIs. Returning pitchers include Kevin McNorton and Kevin Simmons. McNorton is returning for his fourth season with the Slammers. He finished 2016 with a 2-1 record and an ERA of 2.82 in 221/3 innings. Simmons is entering his second season with the Slammers. NEW YORK – Jordan Montgomery took a shutout into the seventh inning for his first major league win, Matt Holliday homered in his return to the lineup and the New York Yankees romped to their eighth consecutive victory by beating the White Sox, 7-4, on Monday night.

Holliday put the Yankees ahead with a titanic three-run shot in a fiverun third inning, and Aaron Judge added a two-run homer that chased Derek Holland (1-2) with the score 7-0 in the fifth. New York has rebounded from a 1-4 start with its longest winning streak since a 10-game run in June 2012.

Making his second career start, Montgomery (1-0) immediately found himself in a first-inning jam. But the 24-year-old lefty calmly pitched his way out of it by retiring cleanup hitter Jose Abreu and streaking Avisail Garcia with runners at second and third.

Garcia began the night leading the

majors with a .465 batting average.

The 6-foot-6 Montgomery scattered four hits over the first six innings, but never got another out. He gave up consecutive singles to start the seventh and then a three-run homer to Yolmer Sanchez that ended the pitcher’s night.

Montgomery jogged off the mound to cheers, and Adam Warren took over. Warren worked into the ninth before the Sox cut it to 7-4 on Kevan Smith’s run-scoring double of the wall in right-center.

Aroldis Chapman came on and gave up a single that put runners at the corners, but the closer got Tyler Saladino to ground into a game-ending double play for his fourth save – the fourth double play turned by the Yankees.

Warren retired 22 straight batters to begin the season before issuing a two-out walk to Saladino in the seventh.

Butler: Criticism of Hoiberg ‘isn’t fair’

jcowley@suntimes.com BOSTON – Fred Hoiberg once again chose to take the high road.

Then again, maybe it’s the only road the Bulls coach knows.

Not that it was time for a middle-finger moment from Hoiberg on Monday, but he definitely could have thumped the chest a bit more than he did.

Through his first two seasons on the job, there’s been way more criticism than praise cast in his direction – rightfully so in some ways – but the amount in which that criticism has come, and the viciousness that has affected his family, well, even All-Star guard Jimmy Butler had a problem with it.

“It isn’t fair, but this game isn’t fair; life isn’t fair,’’ Butler said, when asked about the treatment of his coach locally and nationally. “Yeah, he’s gotten a lot better. He’s getting to know these guys extremely well. He’s studying the game and knowing where to get guys the ball, where they’re comfortable.

“It’s been a learning curve, but we’re here now and we’re still getting better, so he’s doing a tremendous job.’’

Not the popular opinion shared by many, especially after an ESPN round table voted Hoiberg the worst coach in the NBA three weeks ago.

Yes, Hoiberg finished 30th, with Jeff Hornacek ranked 29th and Alvin Gentry 28th. By the way, Hornacek and Gentry were each home watching the playoffs on Sunday, while Hoiberg beat a Boston team coached by Brad Stevens, who just so happened to be ranked No. 3 on the

ESPN list.

Plus, all that should matter to Hoiberg is what his players think about him.

The good news is how that locker room feels about him now is quite different from how it felt about him a few months ago.

Before even blowing that practice whistle for the first time, Hoiberg unfortunately entered the job with one strike already on him. The fact that he was perceived to be Gar Forman’s hand-picked guy with a serious black mark.

Not only by Bulls fans, but also with last year’s core players, who had some serious distrust for their general manager.

Then add in Butler’s “needs to coach harder’’ comment, missing the playoffs last year, as well as a handful of communication problems with the likes of Joakim Noah and Rajon Rondo, and it seemed as if the coach’s five-year deal was a few years too long.

So what’s changed?

The attention to detail and communication have improved, but according to several players, Hoiberg’s defiance of Forman to play Cameron Payne down the stretch really has helped bring coach and players together.

Payne was the centerpiece of the trade with Oklahoma City, and there was a perception in the locker room that Forman wanted to put development in front of a playoff push. Hoiberg and his staff were instrumental in going a different direction.

Now, here the Bulls are, up 1-0 against the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference, and feeling really good about the best-of-seven series.

Nicole Ferguson is raising awareness of invisible illness

NEW LENOX – Trigeminal neuralgia. Also known as “tic douloureux” and “the suicide disease,” due to its intense, searing pain.

Nicole Ferguson, 43, of New Lenox, has it.

So does WGN Morning News sports anchor Pat Tomasulo’s wife, Amy. In 2015, the couple created the “Laugh Your Face Off” comedy fundraiser to benefit The Facial Pain Research Foundation, which is conducting research for a cure.

Ferguson attended the fundraiser, where she was interviewed for a special WGN segment on trigeminal neuralgia, she said. The special premieres 8 p.m. April 23, with encore presentations at 10 p.m. April 29 on WGN and noon April 30 on CLTV. She recalled the first bolt, while having lunch with her parents in 1993.

“It was excruciating, like a lightning shock to the skull,” Ferguson said. “I felt like my skull was being tightened in a vise and electrocuted at the same time.”

For years, up until her official diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia in 2013, doctors offered a variety of diagnoses: ear infections, sinus infections, brain tumors, hysteria, overwork, stress.

Ferguson had her wisdom teeth removed, but the pain remained, even through narcotics.

poromandibular joint disorder, which causes pain in the ear and jaw, sent her to a pain specialist, who in turn sent her to a neurologist, who diagnosed her and offered surgery.

Ferguson sought second and third opinions.

Mayo Clinic defines trigeminal neuralgia as “a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain.” Tasks as simple as brushing one’s teeth or applying makeup can trigger excruciating pain.

Because of the risks with no promise of a cure, Ferguson said she refused surgery and opted for medication for severe attacks only, which puts her to sleep until the attack ends.

Fortunately, those only occur a couple of times a year as Ferguson works and cares for her two children. The milder attacks occur daily.

“There are some people who have the bad ones 24/7, 365 days a year,” Ferguson said. “They refer to this as the suicide disease.

For some people, the only way out is out ... it’s terrifying.”

Her triggers: sharp noises, flashing lights and the voice of one of her daughters.

“There’s something about the tone that triggers it,” Ferguson said.

She’s not seeking pity. But she does want people to be aware of trigeminal neuralgia since its symptoms are silent.

“You’re not missing a limb so people don’t see it,” Ferguson said. “It’s an invisible illness.”

28 Tips for keeping glucose levels steady Dear Doctors: I’m trying to lower my blood glucose levels, but I have a sweet tooth. What raises blood glucose more – the sugar from fruit, or foods with refined sugar? Is a healthy diet the only way to keep blood glucose steady?

Dear Reader: Managing your levels of blood glucose, which is the measurement of how much of a certain sugar is dissolved in the blood, is important to good health. Glucose, which comes from the foods we eat, is a major source of energy to cells throughout the body.

However, blood glucose levels that remain consistently high can lead to a variety of health problems, including prediabetes, a condition that frequently leads to Type 2 diabetes.

Blood glucose starts its journey in the form of carbohydrates, which are the main nutrients in foods like bread, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains and some dairy products. When we eat these foods, the digestive process frees the sugars within the food and makes them easily available to the body.

Glucose, the smallest sugar molecule, moves from your small intestine into your blood. There, it is distributed throughout the body to provide energy to the cells.

To get from the blood into the cells, glucose needs the help of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, a long, flattened gland that sits behind the stomach.

As your question notes, not all foods release glucose in the same amounts or at the same rate. Foods such as sugary breakfast cereals, pastries and candy are basically glucose bombs. But naturally sweet foods such as apples, strawberries or yams, which contain carbohydrates but also are high in fiber, release glucose more slowly.

It’s a little confusing, we know. Fortunately, a handy tool known as the glycemic index has taken much of the guesswork out of maintaining healthy blood glucose levels.

The glycemic index, or GI, ranks each food relative to how it will affect your blood glucose.

Foods high on the GI release their sugars more rapidly, which can cause blood sugar to spike. Foods lower on the scale release their energy more gradually, and blood glucose levels remain steady.

Interestingly, research has shown that exercise affects blood glucose levels. When you increase your amount of activity, your body works harder and your muscles’ demand for glucose increases. The insulin your body produces becomes more effective as well. The key here, as with diet, is moderation.

A brisk walk, a dance class, an aerobic bout of house cleaning or yard work – any of these can add balance to the blood glucose equation. The good news is even a little bit of regular exercise, say, 30 minutes three times a week, also will help your heart, lungs and even your mood.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY am a full-time nanny for a famJeanne ily with two chilPhillips dren, ages 7 and 9. The mother is wonderful, and so are the kids. But the father, who is absent due to work travel most of the time, teaches his children attitudes I strongly disagree with. It is not often I must interact with him, but when I have, he says hateful things about people who are gay, obese or poor.

The children have now begun to repeat these comments, pointing out large people when we are in public, or saying nasty things about the homeless we see as we drive. I try to combat this hatred by sharing words of love or acceptance.

The mom is mortified when I tell her the things her children have said. She doesn’t share the same attitudes as her husband, but she works a lot and isn’t around to discuss things like this with her kids in the moment.

I feel like part of the family because I spend so much time with the children. But I wonder if I am overstepping my boundaries by admonishing them for saying things their father has taught them to believe. The negative double was devised in 1957 by Al Roth and Tobias Stone.

Without a negative double, presumably North would respond three no-trump, but that contract would have no chance. Instead, North makes a negative double to show four hearts (or five, if he has insufficient values for a two-heart response).

South rebids two hearts, and North jumps to four hearts, despite the weakness of his trumps.

What happens after West leads the spade queen?

South has four possible losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club. He can afford to play one round of trumps, but when West takes the trick and returns another spade, declarer must win on the board, cash the diamond ace, overtake the diamond queen with his king and play the diamond jack, discarding the spade five from the dummy. Then South leads another trump. Shortly, he will claim, having lost only two hearts and one club.

Did you notice a defensive point?

Assuming declarer starts with a heart to his jack, if West wins smoothly with his ace and leads a second spade, he might lull declarer into a false sense of security. If South immediately repeats the heart finesse, he goes down.
