Wilmington Depot – Wilmington American railroad stations used to be an all-too-common sight in our country, as almost every town, large and small, could claim one, which was due largely to the fact that railroads once went almost everywhere, reaching almost any and every town.

In the beginning, the promise of a rail line passing through town often meant boom or bust for any settlement.

Railroad station buildings, or depots, often were the center of activity and communications for small towns in America.

Before the automobile, the railroad depot was the only means to the outside world for most people.

Not only could you use the building to board your train to far away places, but it also was where the goods you purchased were delivered. For the town of Wilmington, the story is similar.

The Chicago and Alton railroad line was completed through the newly incorporated village of Wilmington in 1854.

By the spring of 1869, a large, ornate depot, shown in the Then photograph, was constructed and completed north of the tracks near the southwest corner of Chicago and Kankakee Streets.

The Wilmington depot, a typical small-town station, was rectangular in shape and parallel the railroad tracks. At one end was the freight room, which had a pair of scales for weighing items that needed to be shipped. At the other end of the building was a waiting room with benches for passengers.

The building functioned as the town’s depot until it was decommissioned in the early 1970s.

Preservation efforts began in earnest beginning in 1997, when Union Pacific offered to donate the depot and save it from demolition.

The same year, a grassroots community group was formed to raise money to save the structure and potentially move it to another location.

Women play role in 25 percent of farms in Grundy County

Shaw Media correspondent When Tammy Halterman of Mazon was 10 years old, her father retired from the Army and settled on a farm in rural Mazon. Although her mother never touched a tractor, Halterman ran one.

“My dad had me run equipment, but fathers allowed kids my age to do that. Times were evolving and changing,” Halterman said.

When she was involved with 4-H Club or sports, Halterman said she had to be on the boys’ teams, but closer to her junior and senior years of high school, more girls were in her FFA group.

“Now you see a lot of leadership of ladies in agriculture, probably because of women’s equality over the years. Women have become more forward thinking, and many I know work alongside their husbands,” Halterman said.

Halterman grew up across the road from her now husband, Kevin Halterman, but the two didn’t cross paths early on. They married when Tammy was 28. A typical day for the couple includes feeding cattle, pigs and chickens, as well as taking care of and farming family and rental properties.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Kaylee Heap of Minooka was introduced to farming by her now husband, Kevin Heap, and Sara Mitchell brought her husband into her show pig business.

Kaylee said she grew up in the real estate world in Wilmington, but after she met Kevin in college, she quickly learned that if she wanted to spend time with the busy farmer, she had better learn a thing or two about the business.

The couple now has been together nine years, and Kaylee primarily works out of her home and car for Grainco FS Inc. as the central origination manager, helping farmers market their grain and managing a staff of originators.

During the fall, she helps Kevin run the family business, Heap’s Giant Pumpkin Farm. She manages the seasonal employees and gives school tours during the day.

“I like chaos and like the flexibility so I can be involved in all of it,” she said.

Mitchell said she grew up on a family farm, and when she finished college, she wanted to get involved in the show pig business. Now, she and her husband, Mark Mitchell, who did not grow up farming, help run Brockman Farms in Verona, which includes show pigs, custom pork and pigs the farm feeds out and sells.

Sara also sells crop insurance for First Farm Credit in Ottawa, and she and her husband have begun an educational wing to the farm called Think Oink, where they team up with Streator High School to show the process from pig insemination to birth.

Kaylee and Sara both said they feel as if they work in male-dominated roles on and off the farm, but also said that as long as they know what they are talking about, the fact that they are women has never played against them negatively in the agriculture world.

Sara Mitchell is seen performing a regular checkup on one of her pigs.

“I think in my business, being a woman is an asset, because I can connect to consumers, woman to woman, because wives are more active in the roles on the farm,” Sara said.

A 2012 Census of Agriculture found that in the U.S., out of the 3.2 million total farm operators, 30 percent were women, and of the total principal operators in charge of day-to-day operations, 14 percent were women.

In Grundy County, specifically, women play a role on 25 percent of farms and are the key operator of 6 percent of farms in the county, Grundy County Farm Bureau Manager Victoria Wax said.

“I work with men and am managed by men, which are awesome mentors,” Kaylee said. “I try to get creative and work with other women in the industry to see what works for them, and as long as I am knowledgeable and have an opinion, I feel confident.”

An inquisitive mind, a leader’s heart Anthony ‘Butch’ Tadey found adventure in life and organized the same for others

JOLIET – Anthony “Butch” Tadey “was a very unusual character.”

Ray Strle, Butch’s friend of 60-plus years, who described him thus, said Butch had an extensive knowledge of history (especially World War II), an inexhaustible capacity for great ideas and a natural leadership style.

“He would just invent these things and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do,’” Ray said. “He always had interesting ideas, so [we] went along with it.”

One great Butch idea was the Frank Gasperich tribute football game.

From childhood through their 50s, Butch, Ray and their friends liked getting together on weekend afternoons to play baseball or football. Often these games occurred at Garnsey Park because many of them grew up in the area.

One friend, Frank Gasperich, was killed in Vietnam. Frank especially loved football. So Butch decided the last game of the season would be dedicated to Frank, with loved ones in attendance, Ray said.

Frank is buried at St. Joe’s cemetery near Garnsey Park, so at halftime, the players would head over there.

“We’d stand around Frank’s grave and sing the national anthem,” Ray said.

Butch had a knack for bringing people of different backgrounds together and loved hosting barbecues for that purpose, Angela Wilkerson of Orland Hills, Butch’s daughter, said.

“One couple met through my dad and got married,” Angela said.

Butch loved reading and was knowledgeable about many topics, including politics, Angela said. In addition to World War II, Butch loved gangster history, sports history and local history.

Angela said she met many famous sports figures at the sports conventions she attended with her father. At age 6, Angela met Pete Rose, actually sat on his lap and received a compliment from him, she said.

“I knew he was important because of the Nestle Crunch commercial,”

Angela said. “He looked at me and said, ‘You look like the Nestle Crunch girl.’ ” Angela had many history adventures with her father, often in cemeteries. Butch loved exploring them and finding notable people, especially Civil War soldiers, and sharing tidbits of their lives with her.

Butch liked Mount Carmel cemetery in Hillside because Al Capone and Sam Giancana are buried there.

But father and daughter also wandered through Queen of Heaven Cemetery across the street.

That’s how Angela learned about one of the worst fires in U.S. history,

the school fire at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School in 1958. Three nuns and 92 students died in that fire.

“It was not up to fire code, so a lot of people passed away,” Angela said.

“It was pretty bad.”

Angela said she discovered the “nooks and crannies” of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin from all the mini-trips she took with her father.

“He’d say, ‘Let’s go take a ride somewhere and find something,’” Angela said.

Butch planned similar trips with his friends, she said.

“He was a great organizer,” Angela said. “They’d have these camping trips in the woods. He loved to get back to nature.”

Butch came to every one of Angela’s childhood events and coached her Little League team. In her eulogy, Angela wrote, “He got me to ring the Salvation Army bell with him at Christmastime, plant flowers at St. Mary Nativity cemetery and campaign with him to save the homes of Broadway Street in Joliet, which were due for demolition.”

When Angela was in college, he happily helped her research the old Croatian neighborhoods near St. Mary Nativity Church in Joliet for a school project.

She studied in England, and Butch loved meeting with her visiting friends, hearing their experiences and taking them on tours of the area.

In later life, during the 20 years Butch drove a bus for First Student, he regaled his passengers with stories from history. His friendly, engaging mannerisms endeared him to the students.

“They loved him,” Angela said.

“When he had a heart attack in 1998, they all rallied and took up a collection for him. He was invited to kids’ graduation parties.”

Butch’s influence certainly rubbed off on Angela.

When Angela taught social studies and language arts at Timber Ridge Middle School in Plainfield, she took her seventh-grade students on one of Chicago cemetery expert Ursula Bielski’s field trips after they read (and loved) one of Bielski’s books.

“The authors rode on the bus with the kids and talked with everyone,” Angela said. “They signed books for those that wanted to buy books.”

Before Butch died Feb. 3 at age 70, Angela reprised one of his favorite childhood memories: visiting the graves of favorite movie stars in California. She took photos of the graves of his favorite stars, such as James Stewart and Errol Flynn.

“He loved Errol Flynn movies,” Angela said.

Old Plank Road Trail to get new bridge

mmallory@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Forest Preserve District of Will County continues to enhance and extend its trail system.

The latest improvement comes in the form of a pedestrian bridge replacement over Interstate 80 in New Lenox. The bridge, which is part of the 21-mile Old Plank Road Trail, is 53 years old.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is planning a reconstruction of the interchange at I-80 and Route 30, but the timeline of that project is undetermined. In the meantime, the pedestrian bridge work will be done.

The Forest Preserve District manages the portion of the trail.

“The new bridge will be much lighter in appearance,” Chief Operating Officer Ralph Schultz said in a district news release. “Trail users will have a unique opportunity to view motorists and commerce moving along one of America’s great cross-country interstates, and highway travelers will be able to see the runners, walkers and cyclists who are enjoying the trail.”

The existing bridge was constructed in 1964 to carry the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad over the interstate, according to the news release.

The new bridge will sit wider and

higher above I-80 than the old one.

Two bridge spans are scheduled to be delivered to the site this week.

D Construction of Coal City was hired by IDOT to install the new bridge and remove the old one. The

IDOT- funded bridge project is expected to cost $1.4 million.

Bridge installation will take place sometime between midnight and 5 a.m. on the day selected for the work, D’s Jeff Gillan said in the news release. Traffic on I-80 will be stopped for about 30 minutes as the bridge spans are erected. Concrete supports for the new bridge already are in place.

The new structure will open about two weeks after its spans are installed just to the east of the old bridge. The Old Plank Road Trail stretches from Joliet east through New Lenox, Frankfort, Matteson and Park Forest.

In other news, on Thursday, the Forest Preserve District board approved a contract with Baecore Group of Schaumburg for $22,400. The firm will provide a request for proposal and vendor selection services pertaining to new financial and accounting software.

D-86 board extends lease Will County judge leaves on classroom mobile space retirement to fill court vacancy

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board member has suggested district officials review classroom numbers and sizes among schools in light of the district having to once again lease mobile class space.

The board on Wednesday unanimously approved taking the option of having a third year in a lease agreement with JMO Mobile Modular for mobile double classrooms at Carl Sandburg Elementary School to meet high student enrollment. Last year, the board approved the lease agreement, which came with two optional years. The renewal option for a third year will be at the annual rate of $13,500.

Board Inspector Deborah Ziech said she wanted the district to “look at the whole picture” of the number of classrooms and the students in them districtwide.

“I don’t want just to keep throwing Band-Aids on buildings, and to me that’s what these mobile units are,” Ziech said.

New auditors

The board also unanimously approved having Wermer, Rogers, Doran & Ruzon as its new auditing firm.

District 86 has been using its previous auditors, Klein Hall CPAs, for more than 10 years, said Tamara Mitchell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services. Best practice is to change auditors every five to seven years, she said.

A request for proposal for new auditors was sent, and the district received three responses, Mitchell said. WRDR came out on top and will “go a lot deeper into looking at things” as well as helping the district with its business operations, she said.

“We’ve already done some of those things in the business office, but we want our external auditors to come in and evaluate the changes that have been happening and help us to make suggestions for improvements moving forward,” Mitchell said.

Other WRDR clients include Joliet Township High School District 204 and Lincoln-Way High School District 210.

Former Associate Judge Rick Mason was named Thursday to complete the term of Circuit Judge Dan Rozak. Rozak and Mason both retired in Jan- Rick Mason uary.

“I thought I was happy in retirement, but this seemed like a great opportunity, so I put in for it, and I’m honored to have been appointed,” Mason said Friday.

Mason grew up in Ottawa before attending Lockport Township West High School, which now is Romeoville High School. After receiving a degree from Valparaiso University, he argued personal injury and criminal cases, then spent 10 years as an associate judge.

“This was a big change of plans ... to discuss with my family, but I do have their support, and at the end of the term, I will retire for good,” he said.

Military overseas thank Shorewood Knights for care packages SHOREWOOD – Several weeks back, I wrote about care packages that are sent to our deployed troops overseas. These particular packages came from the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Parish in Shorewood. K. of C. partners with Operation Care Package and together they collect needed and cherished items from home and notes from school kids, and get the packages to our men and women in the military.

Just this year, the Shorewood K. of C. collected 1,500 pounds of food and other items plus an additional $2,145 in cash to help Operation Care Package with postage.

John Thompson of the Shorewood K. of C. shared with me how much he had appreciated receiving packages from home when he was stationed in Vietnam. The packages, which come from many organizations, make the days of our service men and women much brighter and boost their morale, Thompson told me. And he knows firsthand.

So when Thompson received a thank-you via email from a group of U.S. Navy electricians aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, he wanted to share it with our readers to show how much those care packages really do mean to our service men and women.

While their exact whereabouts are not being published for their safety,

“I want to take a moment of my day to thank all of you for kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness in participating in Operation Care Package and giving us bits of joy while deployed,” wrote Robertson, whose first name I was asked not to publish.

“I wanted you to know that these care packages lift the morale of my entire shop, as even though we do not know any of you personally, just receiving a box lets us know that someone was thinking of us,” Robertson continued. “As a small division within this grand ship, we shared the package that we received with each other. Each individual calls dibs on certain items, such as gum or SlimJims or toothpaste, and we open it up together, read the letters aloud, and come together as a more cohesive unit, through the package that you provided.

“Throughout my career, it is these individual acts that mean the most and from ship to ship, I personally

have kept the letters and lined my workspace with it. Everyone is different in how they show their appreciation, but there is not a single person onboard this ship that does not love receiving a gift box. Thank you in your service to us and we thank you for what you have done for us.”

This group of Navy men and women are just a small number of those who receive gift boxes from Operation Care Package or other organizations.

They team up with local churches, schools, other organizations and even individuals who want to be a part of sharing their patriotism and love.

After Holy Family Parish shared the email with their own parishioners, everyone gave tons of positive feedback, Thompson said. Some even remarked that the letter brought tears to their eyes knowing that they had even a small part in helping.

“It is such a joy to participate in their happiness,” Thompson said.

“The picture is worth a thousand words.”

OBITUARIES SAMUEL J. DUNCAN SR. Born: March 17, 1928 Died: April 13, 2017

Samuel J. Duncan Sr., passed away peacefully with his family by his side, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, Thursday, April 13, 2017. Age 89 years.

Survived by his loving family, David (Deb) Duncan, Susan (Doug) Olomon, Karen Duncan, Laura (Robert) Klouda and Samuel J. (Jennifer) Duncan Jr. Five grandchildren, Sean (Amanda) Duncan, Kyle (Tabitha-fiancee) Klouda, Brandon Duncan, Alex Klouda and Meghan Duncan. Three great-grandchildren, Parker, Cooper and Harrison Duncan. His brother, Gus (Pat) Chaousis. Also several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorraine “Cookie” Duncan (nee Szepelak) (2009); a son, Daniel D. Duncan (1969); a brother, Steve Chaousis; and sister, Bess Dahms.

Sam was born in Argo, IL on March 17, 1928, to John and Xanthe Chaousis. Graduate of Argo-Summit High School Class of 1946. Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. in the Panama Canal during which he was an chauffeur and bodyguard for many generals and Bob Hope on his USO tours.

Owner and operator of Sam’s Barbershop in the Marycrest Shopping Center for 62 years, he volunteered his time and barber skills at the Hinsdale Sanitarium. Sam was an avid golfer in many area tournaments. Member of Joliet Elks Club Lodge #296 and attended St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

Sam enjoyed bright and vibrant colors. In keeping with his uplifting spirit please wear bright and festive colors to his celebration of life and visitation.

NORMAN D. MILLER Norman D. Miller, age 80, of Minooka, passed away on April 13, 2017, at Joliet Area Community Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Norman was born July 12, 1936, in Springfield, Illinois, to Otto and Cecile (Picton) Miller.

He was the beloved husband of nearly 60 years to Kathryn “Kay” (nee Gecan) Miller; loving father of Cheryl (Phillip) Tyrell, Bruce Miller, Sarah (Eric) Davisson, Kurt (Valerie) Miller; cherished grandfather of Alex (Ashley) Tyrell, Cole (Eva) Tyrell, Neal Tyrell, Ryan Davisson, Leah (Thomas) Rash, George Miller, Olivia Miller, and Karl Miller; devoted brother to Calvin (Velda) Miller of Elgin, Joan (Lawrence) Durham of Peoria, George (Lois) Miller of Champaign-Urbana and Emily (Roger) Frank of Rock Falls.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Cecile (nee Picton) Miller; and his brother, George (Lois) Miller.

Norman attended Athens Grade School in Athens, Illinois, Ball Township High School in Springfield, Illinois, through his junior year, and Green Valley High School in Green Valley, Illinois, during his senior year. Norm was an all-around athlete who excelled in baseball. He attended Illinois State University where he studied to become a teacher and where he pitched for the Illinois State Redbirds. It was during this time at ISU that Norm met his future bride, Kay. They were married on August 31, 1957, between his junior and senior years at ISU. After graduation, Norm and Kay moved to Minooka, which became their forever home, to begin his teaching career and to begin raising their family.

Norm began teaching at Minooka High School where he taught social studies and coached the basketball and baseball teams. One of his greatest honors was that of coaching the first Minooka High School baseball team to reach the state tournament, which took place in 1962. Over the years, Norm stayed in touch with “his team” of 1962. Eventually, Norm went on to receive his Master’s degree at Northern Illinois University. After six years at Minooka High School, he began teaching and coaching both basketball and baseball at Joliet Central High School. While teaching at Joliet Central, he co-authored two books which were written to enhance Reading skills through the

areas of History and Geography. Norm also taught classes at Joliet Junior College, and each summer, he worked with the Minooka company of C. Thompson and Sons. While living in Minooka, Norm became an active member of the community. He and Kay were faithful parishioners of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Because of his love of baseball, Norm became involved in the Little League program in Minooka where he organized, umpired, and coached for the young players in the program. He also served on the Minooka Village Board. He and Kay were blessed with friendships involving many wonderful people from in and around Minooka.

As a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, Norm enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game and of the Cardinals organization with family and friends.

He and Kay were season ticket holders to the Cardinals spring training games in Florida, and they enjoyed 25 years of cheering their team on to many victories. Norm made friends wherever he traveled, and he and Kay especially enjoyed the life-long friends they met while watching their favorite team during spring training and at games in St. Louis.

Norm’s greatest joy came from his family.

He and Kay were married for almost 60 years, and they were a pair that became inseparable. His four children and eight grandchildren were a source of great love and pride for him, and in their eyes, he truly was the greatest family man, leader, and teacher. He will be dearly missed by all.

SPRINGFIELD – In a two-year stalemate over how to drag Illinois out of a $5 billion deficit and get on top of $13 billion in past-due bills, Gov. Bruce Rauner has been under pressure to show where he would cut the spending he says is necessary.

But lost in the political cat-andmouse between the Republican governor and the Democrats who control the Legislature are real spending reductions that Rauner proposed in his annual budget plan two months ago.

According to an analysis by The Associated Press, there at least 40 areas the first-term executive proposes eliminating or significantly reducing.

“We need to look to programs that serve the most vulnerable and to programs that serve the entire state instead of a specific geographic region, a specific population or a specific vendor,” said Scott Harry, Rauner’s budget director. “They’re important programs. But tough choices have to be made.”

Although the cuts are enough to shut down a single program or service, however, their overall effect on state spending would be minimal. All

New United policy: Crews can’t displace seated passengers

CHICAGO – United Airlines is changing a company policy and will no longer allow crew members to displace customers already onboard an airplane.

The change comes after a passenger, Dr. David Dao, was dragged from a fully booked United Express flight in Chicago because he refused to give up his seat to make room for crew members. Cellphone video of the incident sparked widespread outrage and created a public relations nightmare for United.

Under the change outlined in an internal email Friday, a crew member must make must-ride bookings at least 60 minutes before departure. Crews previously could be booked until the time of departure.

United spokeswoman Maggie Schmerin said in an email Sunday that the change is an initial step in a review of policies and

told, they would save $242 million, or one-half of 1 percent of what the state spends in a year. More than half of that – $125 million – would be reductions to already-battered university budgets.

Here are a few examples:

MASS TRANSIT SUBSIDIES, $17.5 million

Federal and state laws require free or reduced rides for seniors and the disabled on commuter trains and buses in the metro Chicago area, at a cost to the Regional Transportation Authority of about $100 million. The state had previously provided a $34 million annual subsidy before it was halved when Rauner took office. The required discounts don’t go away even if the subsidy does, RTA Executive Director Leanne Redden said.

“These cuts to state funding would merely shift these costs to local taxpayers and fare-paying transit riders,” Redden said.

FUNERAL AND BURIAL EXPENSES, $8.8 million

The state pays for funerals and burials of those who die alone or with no money. Symonds Funeral Homes, with four Chicago-area locations, has received $43,000 this year for this service.

Partner Irving Symonds said he and other funeral directors also do other burials for free, but many become the county coroner’s responsibility.

“The taxpayers of that county have to pay the bill,” Symonds said. “What do we do with these poor souls?”

The service is offered statewide. Records show that funeral homes in Pekin, Springfield and Mount Vernon are among the top participants.

TEEN REACH, $13.1 million

The after-school program has survived other attempts at cuts. In Springfield, Tiffany Mathis, who coordinates Teen REACH for the Boys & Girls Clubs, said funding allows the club to stay open into night hours.

That’s when Lonnie Bland and Darian Bills, both high school seniors, use it. They learned lessons at the club, such as how to settle an argument on the basketball court with freethrows.

The club’s supportive atmosphere has helped when Bland encounters illicit drugs on the street. “I walk the other way,” he said.

Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks ordered 46-year-old Gilbert Feliciano to serve the prison sentence for home invasion, robbery and the murder of Stanley Letkiewicz, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Letkiewicz had noticed Feliciano begging for money outside of a store and decided to allow him to stay at his home. He paid Feliciano to clean or fix things in the basement and the attic. Letkiewicz’s relatives said the living arrangement became strained after Feliciano’s behavior became erratic and violent at times.

Authorities said Feliciano approached Letkiewicz on Sept. 3 while he was taking out the trash. Prosecutors said Feliciano asked him for $40. When Letkiewicz didn’t give him the money, Feliciano forced Letkiewicz into the home, beat him up and stole $100 from him.

Letkiewicz identified Feliciano as his attacker, but police hadn’t arrested him before Oct. 13, when a neighbor found Letkiewicz badly beaten in his home, said Jamie Santini, assistant state’s attorney.

He was taken to the hospital, where he told authorities who his attacker was before he died Nov. 23.

Police seek man who livestreamed homicide

CLEVELAND – An Ohio man claimed to be angry at a woman when he shot and killed an elderly passerby Sunday afternoon while streaming the murder on Facebook. Police urged the suspect to turn himself in, but he remained on the loose into the night.

Law enforcement officials were searching the Cleveland area and beyond for Steve Stephens, the suspect who police said walked up to an elderly man and shot him while on video, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said.

The victim was identified as 74-year-old Robert Goodwin Sr. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson publicly urged Stephens to turn himself in to police and not to “do any more harm to anybody.”

In a separate video, Stephens claimed to have killed more than a dozen other people. Williams said police have not verified any other shootings or deaths.

The Associated Press CAMP BONIFAS, South Korea – President Donald Trump asserted on Sunday that China was working with the U.S. on “the North Korea problem,” and his vice president visited a military base near the Demilitarized Zone separating the Koreas a day after the North conducted a failed missile launch.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who has called the failed missile launch “a provocation,” arrived at Camp Bonifas on Sunday for a briefing with military leaders and to meet with American troops stationed there.

McMaster said, “it’s time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully.”

In a broadcast interview that aired Sunday, McMaster said the U.S. would rely on its allies

as well as on Chinese leadership to resolve the issues with North Korea. “I mean, North Korea is very vulnerable to pressure from the Chinese,” McMaster said on ABC’s “This Week.”

The bottom line, McMaster said, is to stop the North’s weapons development and make the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free: “It’s clear that the president is determined not to allow this kind of capability to threaten the United States. And our president will take action that is in the best interest of the American people.”

After a two-month policy review, officials settled on a policy dubbed “maximum pressure and engagement,” U.S. officials said Friday.

The administration’s immediate emphasis, the officials said, will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of Beijing.

The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the results of the policy review and requested anonymity.

Pence will be tasked with explaining the policy in meetings with leaders in South Korea and Japan during the trip, which also will include stops in Indonesia and Australia. The crews of the 16 planes were “very quiet” as they neared Japan, he recalled, saying his role next to Doolittle was to “be seen, not heard. ... You didn’t speak until spoken to.” But the country song “Wabash Cannonball” started running through his head and he unconsciously began tapping his toe, which caught Doolittle’s attention.

“He gave me a look which didn’t need any conversation,” Cole said with a laugh.

Doolittle soon ordered bomb bay doors opened, and the attack was on against what turned out to be limited anti-aircraft fire.

“The enemy was doing something else and surprised that we were there, and then I just thought, ‘So far, so good,’ ” Cole said.

They then headed to China, running out of fuel. Cole said Doolittle gave the command to prepare to bail out as they neared the coast, adding: “I

wish you all good luck.”

Cole said it was scary to parachute into a dark “unknown” in rough weather. His parachute caught in a tree, leaving him dangling but safe.

Three Raiders died trying to reach China, and eight were captured by Japanese soldiers. Three were executed, and a fourth died in captivity.

Their attack inflicted scattered damage, but more important, stunned Japan’s people. Its military diverted resources to guard their homeland, while news of the raid lifted U.S. morale after the Dec. 7, 1941, surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and a string of Japanese victories in the Pacific.

“Seven decades later, we are still awed by the sheer audacity of the Doolittle raid and the incredible men whose grit and bravery made it possible,” Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi of California said when the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the Raiders in a 2015 ceremony. “Though time has thinned their ranks, it will never dim the daring of their deeds.”

Lawmakers across U.S. move to include young people in voting

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Donald Trump’s characterization of Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists during his presidential campaign angered Heidi Sainz, whose family is from Mexico and who has close friends who are immigrants. She was also upset that she couldn’t do anything about it at the ballot box because she was a year shy of being able to vote.

Sainz favors a bill in the California Legislature that would lower the voting age to 17, which she thinks would give a voice to more people affected by the outcome of elections.

“Looking at all the protests throughout this year throughout all the high schools across the nation, we could see a lot of the minors were protesting because they felt as if they didn’t have a voice,” said Sainz, a senior at Inderkum High School in Sacramento.

Lawmakers in more than a dozen states are trying to increase voter participation by targeting young people.

Their bills are among nearly 500 pieces of legislation introduced around the country this year to make voting easier, according to a March analysis by New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice.

“That has certainly renewed interest in making the system more accessible,” Brater said.

Democrats and Republicans have supported efforts to expand access, particularly online registration. But it’s mostly Republicans who are pushing restrictions such as requiring photo identification at the polls.

Roughly 20 states are considering voter ID laws this year that supporters say prevent fraud and boost public confidence in elections. Critics have said such laws target minorities and the poor, who might not have driver’s licenses and find it difficult to obtain them.

Recent voting expansion efforts include automatic registration and extending absentee voting opportunities.

Republicans control the governorship and legislature in 25 states and so far have been relatively successful in pushing through the more restrictive laws. Democrats control just a half-dozen states.

In California, where Democrats command a supermajority in the Legislature and control the governor’s mansion, lawmakers say they want to take the lead in expanding voting access as other states move to restrict it.

CINCINNATI – At age 101, retired Lt. Col. Dick Cole said his memories are vivid of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders mission that helped change the course of World War II. Now the sole survivor of the original 80-member group, Cole recalls the excitement of learning the bombing target they had been secretly training for was Lt. Col. Dick Cole Japan itself.

He remembers the eerie quiet as they neared their target, not knowing whether anti-aircraft firepower was ready for them; the precise series of orders, from open bomb bay doors to prepare to bail out, from mission leader Jimmy Doolittle as Cole flew alongside him as his co-pilot; parachuting into darkness, then being helped by Chinese villagers to stay step one ahead of vengeful Japanese troops.

Three of his comrades were executed.

Cole plans to take part in events Monday and Tuesday at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near

Dayton, Ohio, marking the 75th anniversary of the attack that rallied America and jarred Japan.

It will be “a somber affair,” Cole said in a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press, when he fulfills the long Raider tradition of toasting those who have died in the past year, using goblets engraved with their names. In a private ceremony, he will offer tribute to retired Staff Sgt. David Thatcher, who died last year at age 94 in Missoula, Montana.

Sometimes chuckling, sometimes reflective, Cole sounded clear and military officer-courteous during an AP telephone interview, with his daughter Cindy sometimes repeating the questions if he didn’t fully hear them in his home in Comfort, Texas.

Cole is sorry he won’t have any of his mission comrades with him to share stories and joke with as they did in annual reunions that began after World War II. He didn’t expect to be the last one standing, since he was older than many others on the mission.

“I never thought in that vein,” Cole said. “We all know that somewhere along the line, you have to drop out.”

GOING THE DISTANCE

Some track & field teams are looking at long sectional trips VIEWS Curt Herron Growing up on the south side of Lockport, I learned something pretty quickly.

It doesn’t get much closer than Joliet and Lockport. A quick drive down State Street and you reach the old prison, and a few minutes later down Collins Street, you’re at Joliet Central.

So it was with more disappointment than surprise when I took a closer look at the sectional assignments for girls and boys track and field teams.

After reporting on high school sports for 30 years, nothing really shocks me anymore, and that certainly applies to the Illinois High School Association’s annual reinterpretation of maps.

Having traveled around the state a lot throughout the years, I have a very good idea of where cities are located, which are close and which are not. Trying to keep schools fairly close for the postseason makes good sense, especially since these events often are on school nights and transportation costs can be significant.

I understand all too well that a lot of schools don’t want to host postseason tournaments, and who can blame them? By the time expenses are considered, there’s not much money being made for all of the work, and if a school’s team isn’t that good, then why bother?

This is in no way a criticism of any school, and I applaud those who have decided to host. They’re not to blame for the situation created by expanding to extra classes and the regular shifting of schools because of

When I saw that Lockport was hosting a boys track and field sectional, I assumed that most of our area teams would be there, but in fact, only Bolingbrook, Lemont and Romeoville will be joining the host Porters.

Where are the Plainfield schools?

They’re at Naperville North, along with Joliet West and Minooka. Then I wondered, if Joliet West is at Naper-

ville, where is Joliet Central?

I certainly didn’t see this one coming. The Steelmen get to make the 115-mile one-way trip (if going on local roads and not on Interstate 57) to Danville instead of the 6.5-mile stroll to Lockport East or the 21-mile jaunt to Naperville.

In fact, the Steelmen also could have had shorter one-way visits to sectionals at Lyons Township in Western Springs (25 miles), Concor-

Four from area win titles at #SmithStrong Invite SUBMITTED REPORTS

MINOOKA – Four area boys track and field athletes captured first place at Minooka’s #SmithStrong Invite.

Lockport’s John Meyer won the shot put (65 feet, 2 inches) and discus (17910), Minooka’s Soren Knudsen was first in the 1,600 meters (four minutes and 33.32 seconds), and Steve Lasinis won the long jump (22-2.75), while Plainfield South’s Ben Thoms took first in the 110 hurdles (15.81).

Claiming second-place finishes were Lincoln-Way Central’s Nate Rittenbacher in the 300 hurdles (42.08) and Minooka’s 4x100 (43.67) and 4x400 (3:27.99) relays, and placing third was Minooka’s Antonio Hayden in the high jump (6-3). Oak Park and River Forest beat East St. Louis, 106-71, for the title, while Minooka and Huntley tied for third with 69 points.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD Metea Valley Invite: Plainfield

Continued from page 19 One school that is entered in the Lockport Sectional is Hinsdale Central, which is just 3.2 miles from longtime rival Lyons’ south campus but is 19.2 miles from Lockport East.

But Joliet Central isn’t the only area school that will have to spend as much time on a bus as it will competing in the sectional. Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way West and Providence are other winners in the contest to determine the easiest way to get from here to Danville.

While six other schools from the south suburbs also are in for a long haul, there are a few teams that have shorter travels. Champaign Centennial is only 38 miles away, while Bradley-Bourbonnais, Bloomington and Normal Community all have about 80-mile one-way trips.

The Lincoln-Ways caught a break in the girls assignments since they’ll join Bolingbrook, Lemont, Lockport and Romeoville at a fairly close site, Downers Grove South. But Minooka and the Joliet and Plainfield schools

(43-5.75) and the 4x200 relay (1:29.12).

West Aurora Invite: Joliet West’s Daylen Foster won the 400 (:50.22) and was second in the 110 hurdles (15.24), and its 4x200 (1:32.79) and 4x400 (3:28.96) relays also took first. The Tigers were third with 86 points, three points behind runner-up Downers Grove North. Finishing second for Lincoln-Way West was Evan Mitchell in the 1,600 (4:33.22).

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD Oswego East Invite: Bolingbrook,

which edged Batavia, 106-103.5, for the title, got firsts from Kayla Perry in the 100 (12.94), Madison Shroda in the 800 (2:28.76), Kayla Waters in the 100 hurdles (15.87) and the 4x100 relay (:48.57). Finishing second were Claire Young and Tyronay Taylor in the high jump (5-1) and Perry in the 200 (26.47).

Lincoln-Way West got a title from Erica Johnson in the high jump (5-1) and second-place efforts from Jenna Diers in the 400 (1:01.63) and Erica Dice in long jump (16-2). Providence claimed a 1-2 finish in pole vault from Samantha Spencer (11-0) and Stefanie Sestak (10-6).

Argo Invite: Lockport got wins from Jaclyn Greci in the 100 (12.36) and 200 (25.8), Natalie Barth in the 400 (1:02.49), Kayla Isom in the 800 (2:25.31), Morgan Bollinger in the 1,600 (5:25.01), Madison Polinski in the 3,200 (12:26.59), get to make the trip to Ottawa for the sectional.

With Ottawa being about 45 miles one-way from Joliet Central, this trip obviously won’t be as bad as the one to Danville. But it could have covered less distance to compete in sectionals at Downers South (20 miles), Homewood-Flossmoor (25), Reavis in Burbank (25), York in Elmhurst (31) and the Saint Ignatius Sectional at Concordia in River Forest (38).

The Naperville-area schools also must be thrilled about going to Ottawa as opposed to staying close to home.

Providence, whose girls compete in Class 2A, will have to travel 77 miles one way to get to the Mendota Sectional the week before the boys make their 124-mile visit to Danville.

But we know that one area school is very pleased with how the assignments worked out. That’s Seneca, which won’t have to travel since it hosts Class 1A girls and boys sectionals.

Garcia’s 10th-inning homer leads White Sox over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS – If Avisail Garcia carries this hot start into something more than the lukewarm performances that marked the first few seasons of his career that have been a source of consternation from fans and media criticism, he probably won’t be one to gloat.

Garcia, who had underachieved since the Sox got him as a highly thought-of prospect in a trade for Jake Peavy in 2013, says he doesn’t have rabbit ears when it comes to what others have said about him.

“I don’t pay attention to what everybody says,” he said Sunday. “I control what I can control. What people say about me, I don’t pay attention. I know who I am, so. Just keep working hard and do what can I do for my team.’’

All he’s done for his team is hit a

baseball-best .465, enhanced by his biggest day yet, a 4-for-5 performance including a two-run, tiebreaking home run to the opposite field against righthander Ryan Pressly in the 10th inning to give the Sox a 3-1 victory and their second straight series win on the road against an AL Central opponent.

Garcia has improved his diet and is playing at about 15 pounds lighter than last year, which he says helps him come to the park more energized than before. That’s nice, manager Rick Renteria said, but the key to Garcia’s hot start is a better approach at the plate.

“He’s simplifying it and keeping his approach in a particular way where he’s not trying to do too much,” Renteria said. “He’s focusing on making good contact. I can guarantee you he didn’t go up there thinking he was going to hit a homer. With a man that strong, you put a good swing on a ball, you attack it and you click it, it has a

chance to go.’’

“I’m just trying to stay inside the ball,” Garcia said. “The good hitters hit to the other part of the field. That’s what [Miguel] Cabrera does, all day.

That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Garcia, slotted fourth in the lineup against lefty Hector Santiago, said he swung too hard at the first strike then told himself to reel it in.

“Just put the barrel on the ball,’’ he said to himself.

Garcia hit 13 homers in 2015 and 12 in 2016, but he has tape-measure strength to compete with anyone.

This is a crossroads campaign for Garcia, who has to produce and then some to offset his unfavorable defensive metrics in right field. He wisely cautioned after Sunday’s game that it’s still early. Hitting coach Todd Steverson said Garcia will still swing at balls out of the zone – as all hitters do.

“But the approach has been there,

the mindset has been there,” Steverson said. “At the end of the day, you want to see the consistency of it over a full season.”

“When he’s going well he’s balanced, swinging at good pitches and using the whole field. I mean, he’s very strong to the opposite field and center field.”

The Sox ended a run of 18 straight scoreless innings after Garcia bounced a hard single off the right field wall in the eighth, sending Jose Abreu to third. Matt Davidson tied it with a sacrifice fly.

Abreu, Tim Anderson, Jacob May, Todd Frazier and Cody Asche are all hitting under .200 but Garcia has kept the lineup afloat, while Sox pitchers have posted a 2.71 ERA. Closer David Robertson, who got his third save, has retired 15 of 16 batters with 10 strikeouts for a bullpen that boasts a 1.43 ERA.

The Cubs appeared to have staved off a sweep from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Easter Sunday until things fell apart in the eighth inning in front of 39,422 of the Wrigley Field faithful.

The Pirates completed the threegame sweep by beating the Cubs, 6-1, in dramatic fashion.

Once Cubs pitcher Jon Lester left the game with a 1-0 lead, relief pitcher Koji Uehara promptly gave up two hits and two walks, giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

The Pirates staged a resurrection of their own by chasing Uehara from the game when infielder Jordy Mercer singled to right-center field, scoring pinch hitter John Jaso, tying the game at 1. The Pirates tacked on another two runs when Mercer and rookie infielder Alen Hanson scored.

Uehara, who took the loss, entered the game with a 20-inning scoreless streak, the second longest in baseball.

He was replaced by reliever Hector Rondon.

“Ronny almost got out of the entire mess,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said after the game. “The play at the plate, it’s one of those things. When the play ‘stands,’ it’s frustrating, but that’s the way it works. That’s two days in a row. We just have to do a bet-

Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon (10) pitched seven innings, striking out six for the win. He pitched his fourth career start of at least seven innings without allowing an earned run.

He has a rough spot in the first inning when he allowed a walk to Mercer and a triple down the right field line to outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

“We were able to make up for it,” Lester said. “I got back to where we needed to be. First inning was a little shaky. I was trying to find release points on pitches without any trouble.

Willy (Contreras) did a good job of controlling that situation.”

The Cubs have a 19-28 record on Easter. Their last win on the holiday was on April 8, 2012, a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals.

The Cubs (6-6) start a three game series Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

BOSTON – The Bulls waited until the final night of the regular season to cement their spot in the postseason. Jimmy Butler made sure the wait for a playoff victory was a short one.

Butler had 30 points and nine rebounds and the Bulls outlasted top-seeded Boston, 106-102, in Game 1 on Sunday on an emotional night for grieving Celtics star Isaiah Thomas.

Playing a day after 22-year-old sister Chyna Thomas was killed in a car accident in their home state of Washington, Thomas led the Celtics with 33 points.

But Butler overcame a united Garden crowd and led the Bulls to the victory, scoring 23 points in the second half.

“We were so locked in all week,” Butler said. “We knew their stuff, just like they knew ours. But we executed extremely well. We haven’t done that all season, but this is the right time to do it.”

He also got a big lift from the Bulls’ young reserves, who outscored their Boston counterparts 35-22.

Neither team had more than a two-possession lead until Butler made three free throws with 4 minutes to play to make it 95-88. Butler scored 10 straight points to put the Bulls back in front early in the fourth, the first of three lead changes in the fourth quarter.

Later, Thomas had a scary moment when he was hit on his left hand on a 3-point attempt before landing awkwardly on it. After a quick visit to the trainer, he calmly made all three free throws.

It was part of a stretch in which he scored seven straight points.

Celtics fans rallied behind Thomas, showering him with a deafening cheer when he was introduced.

Still, Thomas appeared to be a little emotional at the start of the game, badly missing his first free throw short off the front rim. He wasn’t the only Boston player a little off their game in the first half. Boston’s second unit started the second quarter 1 for 7 from the field and was outscored 10-0 to surrender the Celtics’ first-quarter lead.

Most alarming is how badly the Hawks lost Saturday. This wasn’t a puck-luck loss, where a fluky bounce or one bad play costs them a game. The Hawks looked slow. They looked sloppy. And they looked awful.

And now, they look mad.

“Of course, I’m [ticked] off,” Seabrook said. “I think we all are. It was a tough game. It was embarrassing, losing, 5-0. It was a tough night and tough to sleep, but we have to get back on the horse. It’s playoff time. They’re not going to wait around for us, and we have to go.”

Channeling that anger and frustration in a positive way, and without letting it boil over into foolishness, like when rookie Ryan Hartman hit a prone and vulnerable Craig Smith in the head late in the game, will be key. Hartman won’t face supplemental discipline from the department of player safety, according to a league source, but reckless, careless play isn’t what the Hawks need.

They need focused aggression to fight through Nashville’s neutral-zone-clogging, shot-blocking defense, and to get in Rinne’s face and finally score their first goal of the series.

Wesley Bryan takes RBC Heritage in South Carolina homecoming

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Wesley Bryan remembers pestering players with a lot of crazy questions at Harbour Town Golf Links as he followed father George III’s only appearance at the RBC Heritage in 2004.

“I was probably the most annoying 14-year-old there was,” Bryan said.

Once a pesky teen, Bryan’s now a PGA Tour winner.

Bryan rallied from four-shots down Sunday to win his home state tournament, closing with a 4-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Luke Donald.

Bryan, a South Carolina native who played college golf for the Gamecocks, moved into contention with four consecutive birdies on the front nine. He

took the lead with a birdie on the 15th hole and finished at 13-under 271.

Bryan earned $1.17 million, a tour exemption through the 2018-19 season and a spot in the 2018 Masters.

While excited about the breakthrough victory, Bryan believes it’s just a stepping stone to bigger dreams he’s had since playing the game as a child.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t really change anything other than I now have one PGA Tour victory,” he said.

“There are a lot of guys that have just one PGA Tour victory. My one goal is to get number two at this point.”

Donald shot 68 in his latest close call at Harbour Town Golf Links – it was his fifth second-place finish there since 2009.

The 27-year-old Bryan tapped in for par on the closing, 18th lighthouse hole

to make the former trick-shot artist the first South Carolinian to win the state’s lone PGA Tour event.

Ollie Schniederjans, Patrick Cantlay and William McGirt tied for third, two strokes behind Bryan.

Schniederjans shot 68, Cantlay 67 and McGirt 69.

Bryan was largely known as a YouTube sensation, he and brother George IV, another Gamecocks golfer, pulling off often unbelieveable trick shots – like chipping the ball 20 yards to a waiting Bryan brother to belt away before it hits the ground.

There were no tricks to Wesley Bryan’s round this time, the first to win at Harbour Town in his first try since Boo Weekley won the first of his two straight RBC Heritages in 2007.

Bryan got it going with his front-

nine run, with birdies on the fourth, fifth, sixth and seven holes. After Bryan moved in front on the 15th, he sweated out three straight two-putt pars.

The 23-year-old Schniederjans, five shots behind when the round began, made it all up and was out front with five front-nine birdies. Competing for his first PGA Tour win at the tricky Pete Dye layout proved too daunting for the inexperienced Schniederjans.

He missed makeable birdie tries on the 13th, 14th and 15th, then failed to get in for par after hitting into the bunker on the par-3 17th.

“It was a great week and a good experience on the back,” Schniederjans said. “I tried to win the golf tournament and I came up a little short maybe this time. But another good experience Sunday.”

The game started with the typical deafening roars during the national anthem, but the soundtrack became increasingly angsty as the game went on and it became increasingly clear that the Blackhawks not only might not win the game, but might not score a goal.

Again.

The roars became murmurs, which then became grumbles, which then became occasional angry exhortations, until finally, as the Hawks trudged off the ice following the second period Saturday night, a rarely heard sound rained down on them from the 22,000plus in attendance: Boos.

And the Hawks couldn’t blame them.

“Fans in Chicago are great fans,” defenseman Brent Seabrook said. “They support us through thick and thin. And we weren’t holding up our end of the bargain [Saturday] night.”

Joel Quenneville put it even more bluntly: “They had nothing to be happy about.”

Neither do the Hawks. They trail their first-round series with the Nashville Predators, 2-0, after dropping the first two games at home – a situation even the tried-and-tested Hawks have never faced in the Quenneville era.

They’re playing a team that, despite its seeding, is playing better, harder, faster and hungrier. They’re facing a goalie, Pekka Rinne, who is at the top of his game and who has posted two shutouts to open the series.

There are plenty of things the Hawks need to do better – handle the puck more cleanly; battle harder in the corners and in the Predators crease; and win more faceoffs, to name a few.

But there are also things the Hawks need to do differently – create their own shooting lanes with shot fakes and unpredictability; dump-and-chase more often to get around the trap rather than try to carry the puck through and execute low-percentage drop passes in traffic; and have defensemen get more involved in the offensive attack and give the Hawks strength in numbers.

“It’s not only up to the forwards to create offensive chances,” Niklas Hjalmarsson said. “We’ve got to be a fiveman unit working together to be able to create.”

Things look pretty dire right now, but one goal could open the floodgates, and one emphatic win could change the entire complexion of the series. The Hawks matched a franchise record for road wins this season, and have won at least two road games in each of their last four series. They’re not dead yet, not by a long shot. Heck, they’re not even all that surprised.

“I don’t think we’re shocked that Nashville’s a good team,” defenseman Brian Campbell said. “We knew it was going to take our best effort to win games in this series, or win the series.”

It’s time to find that effort, because as those boos underscored, nobody’s seen it yet.

Note: Corey Crawford will start Game 3, but Quenneville hinted there could be a lineup change or two.

Eye on her future, Patrick races into fitness space

The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The pain was real.

Some 48 hours after being put through Danica Patrick’s fitness test by Danica Patrick herself – it’s the basis for her upcoming book and the sort of thing that will occupy her time when retirement from racing comes – I wasn’t constantly sore. But every time I stood up came a sharp reminder from my legs that Patrick had kicked my butt.

This was the workout: 100 air squats, 100 push-ups (on my knees), 100 butterfly sit-ups and 100 lunges, all timed to see how long it took to complete the set.

That’s the benchmark for more than 700 participants in the trial program for Patrick’s “Pretty Intense” book, due out next year.

Her fitness challenge has been an ongoing project this season while balancing her NASCAR duties. Participants sent in “before” pictures of themselves and were given access to Patrick’s 12week fitness and “clean eating” program. The results, including “after” photos, will be part of the book.

With Patrick’s driving days possibly nearing an end in the not-too-distant future, what might have seemed like an off-track hobby is being fast-tracked into something far bigger. She launched the clothing line “Warrior by Danica Patrick” on HSN after participating in the design process. And she developed the workouts and meal plans for the book.

Ask Patrick about how much longer she will race, and her reply doesn’t suggest the question is off-target.

“As long as it’s fun – and it hasn’t been super fun lately,” she said before the season started. “But every year I start the year, I always have hope that

it’s going to be the year that things are going to click. I understand my career hasn’t progressed.”

Patrick turned 35 last month. She has been racing more than half her life, building her brand along the journey and using a marketing strategy that has made her one of the most recognized female athletes in the world despite her limited on-track success. She is ranked 29th through the first seven races of the season.

Patrick drives for one of NASCAR’s top teams, but the sponsorship that was so easy to come by during earlier days – remember the GoDaddy TV ads? – is now a harder sell. Before the season, Stewart-Haas Racing and primary sponsor Nature’s Bakery became embroiled in a lawsuit over missed payments by the sponsor and what Patrick did or didn’t deliver on behalf of the brand.

It was an 11th-hour loss of about $15 million and it shed light on how hard it is to sell even the most marketable of drivers.

Now in her fifth full season in NASCAR’s top series, Patrick has yet to win a race and only has six top-10 finishes in 161 starts.

Make no mistake: She can drive. She has led laps in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500.

But her lone victory in the IndyCar Series came in 2008 and sticks out as a glaring reminder of how her superstar status outstrips her racing résumé.

It’s been a popular thought for some time that Patrick eventually would make the transition to a lifestyle career, maybe becoming some version of a Rachael Ray type. This much is true: Patrick appears capable of doing pretty much anything. She can whip up a fivecourse gourmet meal, pair wines, paint and dress for either black tie events or black dirt at the race track.

Second-grade teacher Lee Parrott started the Critter Club last year to teach students a love of animals and how to help others. The club raised about $1,500 this year to help animals worldwide. to help pay for a dog’s surgery, while another created a website called www.keepthecritters.com about the club. Another donated about $200 and several carloads of pet supplies to the Will County Humane Society.

Starkman praised her students for their projects. Parrott said he was most proud because all the club members were enthusiastic about showing love for all animals.

PLAINFIELD – Students in the Wesmere Elementary School’s Critter Club this year turned $260 into more than $1,500 to help all kinds of animals.

Yet, more important than raising money, club organizers said, was that the 25 members learned about the idea of “paying it forward” and caring for all creatures.

Wesmere second-grade teacher Lee Parrott started the club last year. Parrott also is a 2015 Golden Apple teaching award winner.

Media specialist Jenny Starkman and reading specialist Robyn Anderson helped Parrott with the club.

The club met weekly for five weeks and learned about the poaching of elephants, animal care, service learning projects, veterinarian care and bringing awareness to habitats.

The second and third grade members each got $10 the first week with the goal to turn that into more to be used to help animals.

Club members presented their projects, how much money they raised and where the donations were given on the final club meeting on March 23.

Some students asked family and friends for donations then gave that money to an animal shelter.

Others used the money to make toys or blankets for animal shelters. Another sold her homemade dog toys at the Wesmere school store.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease exposure common in schools Dear Doctor: My daughter’s school recently sent home a flyer about potential exposure to hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

How worried should I be?

Dear Reader: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is common. It occurs most often in infants and children younger than 7 years of age and is caused by one of 16 types of enterovirus. Outbreaks are more likely in the late summer and early fall, when children are starting a new year of school or preschool.

Because the viruses that lead to HFMD are largely intestinal, they’re usually passed via stool. Small amounts of the virus then make it onto the hands of the child or someone changing the child’s diaper. The virus passes from one individual to another when it ends up on food, the fingers or the pacifier of another child, ending up in the mouth. The fecal-oral transmission is the most common way the virus infects others, but it can also be passed through oral secretions, through coughing, and through the fluid from the blisters seen in hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

Regardless, the virus makes its way down to the lower intestine, spreading to the lymph nodes and from there to the rest of the body. The typical time it takes for the enterovirus to be ingested and for the first symptoms to appear is three to five days.

Symptoms of the disease begin with mouth or throat pain or the refusal to eat.

The most striking symptom of hand-footand-mouth disease is the blisterlike rash that occurs both within the mouth and on the hands and feet; such blisters also can appear on the legs, arms and buttocks.

The lesions are normally not painful and resolve in three or four days. Some species of enterovirus also cause fever, nausea and vomiting. Rarely, enteroviruses can lead

I can understand the worry your school – and you – have regarding this infection.

As I noted, the incubation period is typically three to five days, but one study of an outbreak at a day care showed children were infectious up to seven days. And, not to make you overly worried, but some enteroviruses can be passed in the stool up to 10 weeks after infection.

I would ask school officials at which date the infected child began having symptoms of HFMD. If it was more than five days ago, I would be less concerned about your child now developing the disease.

However, because the virus can be shed long after disease, I would stress the importance of hand-washing. If your daughter does get hand-foot-and-mouth disease, the symptoms likely will not last long, and any discomfort can be treated with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Watch for warning signs of potential complications, such as listlessness, severe headache or neck stiffness.

Consult your pediatrician if your child has these symptoms.

Also, if your daughter does become infected, make sure to practice good hygiene at home, so the virus does not pass to you or other family members.

DEAR ABBY I’ve always been a self-sufficient Jeanne woman. I grew Phillips up in an abusive household, moved out at 16, and cut off contact with my family a couple of years later when it became apparent nothing would change.

Nine months ago, my husband walked out on me and our 3-year-old son. He has no interest in our child. Our roommate, “Matt,” became “Daddy” to my son with my ex’s blessing.

All my friends are either happily married or single, and I have no family to turn to for advice. I’m not religious, so I have no clergyperson to consult. It doesn’t happen every night, and there is no rhyme or reason for it. Recently my husband told me I said something during my sleep that made him angry. He didn’t want to get into a fight, so we haven’t discussed it more. I suspect I may have been having an “adult” dream and said a name other than his.

Now he tries to stay up later than me. I think he may be trying to question me while I’m sleeping in order to get more information out of me on the subject. My doctor said there is no guarantee my response would be true or even related to the questions my husband asked me.

These days, since players intervene with scant regard for suit quality or hand strength, you and your partner must be ready to fight back. Bridge is not a game for cowards.

If the opener bids one of a suit, the next player overcalls in a different suit, perhaps with a single jump, and the responder doubles, that is negative. Its primary job at a low level is to try to find a fit in an unbid major. In this deal, North’s double shows four hearts and 6 or more points. (North might have five hearts if his hand is too weak for a two-heart response, which promises 10-plus points.)

Over this double, South has an easy jump to four hearts. (Perhaps he thought about three no-trump, but that would not have worked well if West had led a high diamond. Then East would have signaled with the queen to tell West that the suit was running.)

West leads the diamond ace, cashes the diamond king and continues with a third diamond, which South ruffs.

On top, declarer has one spade, four hearts and four clubs. So, along with the diamond ruff, there are no worries. Just take the ruff, draw trumps and run the clubs.

What would North have done without the negative double? Presumably bid two clubs, potentially reaching a 3-3 fit. You will get positive results with negative doubles.
