Joliet plans to hire recruitment firm to find city manager

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Council plans to repeat the process used to hire City Manager Jim Hock in finding his replacement.

The council at a special meeting Wednesday agreed to hire a recruitment firm to conduct a nationwide search to find candidates for the next city manager.

Then the council met in closed session to discuss what to do in the meantime, since Hock plans to retire May 3 and the search is likely to take at least three months.

No decision was made, and the matter probably will be discussed again at next week’s council meetings, council members said.

Hock, 62, informed the mayor and council members late Thursday afternoon that he will retire, a decision that they all said caught them by surprise.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk called for the special meeting, which he started off by noting that the last city manager search took about six months and then added, “I thought we should jump on it right away.”

Joliet City Council Hock told the council that the search could be somewhat shortened this time if the city hires the same search firm, GovHR USA out of Northbrook.

He said the firm has estimated the search would take about three months.

Some time will be cut off, he said, because GovHR USA already did a community profile of Joliet, which is part of the recruitment process, three years ago when Hock was hired. However, once a candidate is found, there will be some time needed to negotiate a contract and for the new city manager to give notice to his or her employer, Hock said.

The council likely will get started Tuesday, when it will vote on whether to hire GovHR USA again.

The sentiment expressed Thursday was to do that.

“They did a great job last time,” Councilman Larry Hug said. “Why reinvent the wheel?”

Other council members also said they were satisfied with the results when the city hired Hock.

GovHR USA has estimated a price of $21,000 for the recruitment.

Hock’s regular pay in 2016 was nearly $188,000. Stipends and other income brought his gross pay to just under $196,000, according to the city’s Payroll Summary Report.

Hock has said there is the possibility that he will stay in some capacity during the transition to a new city manager.

But council members met in closed session during the special meeting to discuss the possibilities of hiring an interim city manager.

O’Dekirk said the council would need to decide whether it wants to hire someone on staff now or from outside to serve in the interim capacity.

Council members after the closed session said no decision was made and the matter likely was to be taken up again when the council meets for its workshop and regular meetings on Monday and Tuesday.

Joliet police: Crest Hill man rammed car and drove away

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 23-year-old man intentionally rammed another vehicle with his own Tuesday on a Joliet street, according to police.

The incident occurred at 8:48 p.m. while two men were riding on McDonough Street in a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said the Sonata Jason V. was stopped at a red light to Yantz turn north on Larkin Avenue when a brown Ford Taurus occupied by four people pulled up in the next lane.

yelling, swearing and flashing gang signs at the occupants of the Sonata [whose] driver yelled back he is not in a gang and didn’t want any problems,” Gregory said.

Gregory said that when the light turned green the Sonata attempted to turn, but Yantz turned so the front of the Taurus struck the Sonata on the passenger side.

No one was injured. The 27-year-old driver pulled the Taurus into a nearby gas station and the Sonata began to follow, but then sped off on Larkin, Gregory said.

“The [Sonata] drove after the Taurus because the driver wanted to get the license plate number,” Gregory said. “The Taurus traveled at a high rate of speed onto Jefferson Street – veering into oncoming traffic – then turned onto northbound Nicholson Street where it jumped the curb.”

After responding officers met with the Sonata’s occupants, the Taurus was located in the 200 block of Nicholson Street, Gregory said.

“Officers saw an apartment with the rear door open, knocked and announced, ‘police,’ before they went upstairs,” Gregory said. “One woman was coming down the stairs and they went up to find 12 males inside an apartment – none of whom claimed to live there.”

Gregory said one man claimed to have been driving the Taurus, but police determined he was not the suspect. As the dozen men left the apartment, Yantz, of the 1400 block of Pioneer Road in Crest Hill, was identified by witnesses and arrested on charges of vandalism and reckless conduct.

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield and White Oak library districts will need to figure out how to offer more services and accommodate more space for residents in light of their referendums failing.

Officials from the districts said they were up against a few factors, including low voter turnout, which is typical for spring municipal elections.

As a result, Plainfield Library Director Lisa Pappas said district officials will have to discuss what the next plans will be for budgeting and operations.

“We’re putting off any major, ma-

jor things that needed to be done, and we’re not going to be doing those things anymore,” Pappas said of the failed referendum. “It will absolutely have an impact.”

White Oak Library Director Scott Pointon wasn’t able to be reached, but he has said that if the referendum did not pass, then the library will not have the services it sought to fund.

The Plainfield library referendum sought to raise the limiting tax rate to allow the sale of alternate revenue bonds for $25 million to add onto the existing library, renovate current space, save for future expenses and increase the operational budget.

Both failed in the April 4 elections.

The Plainfield library referendum lost with 65 percent of 7,132 voters against it and the White Oak referendum lost with 60 percent of 7,858 voters against it.

Library officials had put both referendums to voters in past election cycles and those were unsuccessful as well.

Pappas said that without the funds from the April referendum, the library will have to take money out of its regular operating budget to care for the needs of its facility.

D-86 receives draft report on building needs

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet District 86 board members saw the first draft of reports analyzing the critical needs of facilities throughout the district.

The reports were presented at a committee meeting Wednesday on all 23 sites at the Joliet school district by companies STR Partners and EMG. In December, the board approved an agreement with STR Partners for $154,000 – and a contingency allowance of $4,000 – to assess the conditions of buildings. Last year, board inspectors discussed the idea of having a districtwide facilities plan and Superintendent Theresa Rouse has said there

was a need for a new one.

Alan Armbrust, STR Partners executive manager, came to the committee meeting to explain how the reports were developed. He noted the district is “very diverse in many respects,” including the types of buildings and their conditions.

“I’m really amazed by the breadth of styles, how old the buildings are, the

conditions they’re in. You have virtually every situation we’ve ever seen.

It’s good, it makes it interesting for us, but it also makes it a challenge,” Armbrust said.

Board inspector Deborah Ziech asked whether there any facility needs that needed to be addressed soon or in the summer. Armbrust said there wasn’t anything that would pose a problem next school year with the exception of mechanical, plumbing or grease trap-related issues.

Ziech also inquired about the money the district has to fund work needed for the buildings but board Vice President Jeffrey Pritz said that would be a “much bigger discussion.”

“We’ve have a lot of discussions about how we’re going to do this,” he said.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse said to the board at Wednesday’s meeting that she wanted the district to look differently at its strategic plan, the overall driving force behind the district’s planning.

“We want to be thinking about and trying to really fine-tune and get clear in our minds where we are going,” Rouse said.

She said district officials have talked about cultural competency and proficiency, but she wanted to talk about the district making a promise that is supported districtwide.

“I was happy to see this word right in the middle with such great emphasis and that being ‘equity’ because that speaks to this whole notion of cultural proficiency that we need to work toward.”

Rouse organized them in a word cloud that showed some of the most frequent words that came from the board was equity, dedication, compassion, trust and community.

Rouse said she plans to the same activity with other stakeholders in the community, saying each group will have its own word cloud on what words they think of when they think of promise.

proving classroom climate or discipline data.

The board also read a statement regarding their position on community engagement. Board Vice President Jeffrey Pritz read that the board will continue to make “efforts to hear and engage the whole community.”

“We will seek venues beyond the board meeting where we can effectively engage community members and listen to their concerns,” Pritz read.

He said the board will attempt to be in touch with all stakeholders and people in the community, not “just those who seek us out.”

“We will monitor our efforts in this area, asking the question ‘which community voices are not part of board considerations, and how can we allow those voices to be heard?’ ” Pritz read.

Three teens arrested in Joliet car burglary Tuesday morning

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Three Joliet teens were arrested Tuesday after they were allegedly spotted rummaging through a parked car.

About 3 a.m., a witness in the 1200 block of Roosevelt Avenue in Joliet saw two men inside his blue 2008 Nissan Altima with a third man nearby, Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said.

“He went out to confront them and

they fled in a beige Buick Rendezvous,” Gregory said. “The victim got in his car to follow them when the Rendezvous stopped and the driver, later identified as Marco A. Luciano, got out with Marco A. a baseball bat and told Luciano the victim to stop following them.”

The victim notified police and officers located the Rendezvous about 4:30

a.m. in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Oregon Avenue, Gregory said.

“Santiago Diaz was outside the vehicle and said it had broken down.

While officers were at the scene, Luciano and Santiago a girlfriend arrived in Diaz another vehicle and he said the Rendezvous was his,” Gregory said.

Two challengers win seats on Plainfield Village Board

Newcomers Cally Larson and Larry Newton won two of three seats in the April 4 election. Incumbent Trustee Margie Bonuchi held onto the other spot.

Newton, who has served since 2003 on the Plainfield Park District board, said he enjoys serving the public and felt the park district was finally in a stable position after years of instability.

Larson said that in her time as a Realtor in the area, she’s spoken to a lot of families who are making sacrifices to keep their kids in Plainfield District 202 schools amid higher property tax bills.

Much of Plainfield is seeing a 4 percent increase in property values this year. While the village board agreed to drop 50 cents off a capital improvements charge on residents’ water bills to help reduce some costs, she was still disappointed the village didn’t lower its property tax rate.

She said a drop of $250 in property taxes in one year would help residents a lot more than a $6 drop in the water bill in one year.

She said she’s understanding of most of the board’s concerns that state funding is unpredictable, but she wants to do more to keep Plainfield residents from moving away to more affordable areas.

Newton said there’s nothing glaringly wrong with how the village is run. He commended village staff for outlining various projects in a detailed manner, specifically the village’s needed road maintenance.

But he said the capital needs to be in place as needs arise, noting many of the village’s roads were built at a similar time and now need replacing or improving.

Newton wants to improve economic development.

Larson said she wants to help make home ownership more realistic for millennials in Plainfield.

“They don’t need to go to Naperville, we have to figure out how to keep them here,” Larson said.

She also feels middle-aged residents have been underrepresented in village government, and she’s disappointed more people don’t show up to village meetings.

“We need to make sure we’re heard,” Larson said.

Trustee Garrett Peck also ran for re-election, but came in fourth.

Prior to last-minute mail-in votes that will be counted on Tuesday, Bonuchi led with 2,434 votes, followed by Larson’s 2,230 and Newton’s 2,166. Peck received 1,633 votes.

Carl Gilmore said the board has no definite plans as to whether it will go to referendum again, but officials will start the process of assessing the potential for future referendums when the board meets later in the month.

He said officials will try to meet the needs of the library that the referendum would’ve resolved through its regular income stream, while also assessing short- and long-term plans.

Gilmore said the board has plans for a building evaluation, and after that is completed, it will be better equipped to make facility decisions.

He said the real problem the library has to address is the explosion in population since 1990. Because of the Property Tax Extension Law Limit, the library was never able to get a tax increase proportional to the population.

“Because of that lag, not only did we not capture what would have normally been the tax rate for that particular year, but because of compounding, there is no way to catch up either,” he said.

Gilmore said he thinks the referendum did not pass because people are careful about their expenses and that it has attracted national opposition from Americans For Prosperity, a political advocacy group connected to conservative businessmen David and Charles

County Engineer Craig Cassem said the highway department had approved bid agreements for the items listed below, which the county board approved at its meeting Tuesday: • Hot mix asphalt for Felix Township to “D” Construction for $36,240.10 and for Wauponsee Township to “D” Construction for $128,068.32.

• Oil and chip pavement for Garfield Township to A.C. Pavement Striping for $14,943.30, for Highland Township to Steffens 3D for $68,864.75, for Maine Township to Steffens 3D for

Channahon Tobacco and Convenience Store owner Amer O Abuzaghleh, 35, of Joliet, also faces one count of criminal trademark infringement, Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

In January, a customer bought what appeared to be a “North Face” jacket from the business at 24735 W. Eames St., but believed the jacket was “inferior quality,” Wold said. The jackets, which typically sell for $160, were being sold for $30.

Police Chief Marc Maton said the body was discovered about 6:30 a.m. north of the 127th Street bridge. Lem-

The township is asking that the county split the cost, at a total cost to the county of $100,000.

The county board held discussion, with board member Debra Warning, R-District 2, questioning the replacement of the bridges, one of which has been closed about 30 years, when there are other bridges that require work.

FedEx terminal under construction in Joliet JOLIET – A FedEx truck terminal is under construction on a portion of the old Caterpillar property being redeveloped by CenterPoint Properties.

The Joliet City Council approved a preliminary plat for a 58.3-acre subdivision at CenterPoint Business Center – I-80 last week.

The plat includes 46.4 acres for a FedEx terminal, according to the city memo describing the plan.

The plat includes two other lots: 2.2 acres for a potential barge operation along the Des Plaines River, although no development plans are in place now; and 9.7 acres to be set aside as a conser-

vation area.

The subdivision, located at U.S. 6 and Terminal Court, is a portion of the Caterpillar property that CenterPoint acquired in 2003.

CenterPoint would not discuss the subdivision approved by Joliet because of a confidentiality agreement, spokeswoman Christine Grant said.

“Every 21 Seconds” is based on a 2009 book of the same title by Brian Sweeney.

Sweeney, of Mokena, suffered a severe brain injury at 29. Doctors thought he didn’t have much of a chance to recover, much less write a book. But Sweeney “took a bad thing and made it into a good thing,” and wrote the book after recovering.

He learned basic functions all over again and has done public speaking.

It was announced in 2012 that the book was getting picked up for a movie version.

Sweeney didn’t want a big company to buy the story and then alter it signifi-

cantly for the movie. When he sat down with Shannon Brown, who has been in more than 100 projects, Brown told him exactly what would get done with the movie. Sweeney said the movie connects his character with a Marine who was hurt in Iraq in 2006 and suffered a brain injury.

Sweeney wants to raise awareness of how frequently brain injuries occur – every 21 seconds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“They want to tell a side that’s never been told,” Sweeney said, adding that it’s a passion project for everyone involved. “Some of the outcomes of brain injuries aren’t very pretty.”

The movie will be filming at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet and locations in Mokena, New Lenox and other areas of Illinois starting May 4.

Cinematographer Ballhaus dies at 81 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BERLIN – The publisher of German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, who worked with Martin Scorsese on “Gangs of New York,” “Goodfellas” and “The Departed,” said Ballhaus has died. He was 81.

Publishing house DVA, which cited Ballhaus’ family, said in a statement Wednesday that he died overnight at his Berlin apartment after a short ill-

ness.

Ballhaus spent four decades behind the camera. Besides Scorsese, he worked with the late Rainer Werner Fassbinder and other German directors, including Volker Schloendorff.

His other credits included “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “Broadcast News,” “Working Girl” and “Quiz Show.”

Publisher Thomas Rathnow described Ballhaus on Wednesday as “more than a cameraman.”

David Letterman’s mom, who became unlikely star, dies at 95 The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – David Letterman’s mother, Dorothy Mengering, a Midwestern homemaker who became an unlikely celebrity in her 70s as she baked mystery pies and covered the Olympics for her son’s late-night show, has died. She was 95.

Letterman’s publicist Tom Keaney confirmed Mengering’s death Tuesday for The Associated Press.

Letterman had been on the air for years, and had made ironic celebrities out of dozens of nobodies, before he thought to bring on his mom.

But the moment he did, she became a hit, with a cheerful “Hi, David!” in her Indiana accent starting every appearance.

The two had great on-air chemistry, her homespun sincerity proving the perfect foil for her son’s urban acerbity.

Her first appearances came via satellite from her Carmel, Indiana, kitchen for a segment called “Guess Mom’s Pies,” which became a Thanksgiving tradition. Letterman would make a huge production of the

bit before finally declaring, usually correctly, “chocolate chiffon!” or “rhubarb!” When he was wrong, she would take on a comforting tone like he was a boy who had lost a Little League game.

She soon started making annual Mother’s Day appearances, too.

She really became a star when the show took her out of the kitchen.

Mengering was a correspondent for the Letterman’s Late Show on CBS at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer Norway, a role she reprised for the next two winter games, wearing bulky snow gear that made her tiny self almost invisible, and oozing pure sincerity even in absurd bits Letterman’s writers had her perform.

“After Lillehammer, I couldn’t believe how it all took off,” Mengering told The New York Times in 1996. “I think it’s about the idea of mom and of a family.”

Mengering lived all her life in Indiana. She married Letterman’s father, a florist named Harry Letterman, in 1942. He died in 1973, and she married structural engineer Hans P. Mengering, who died in 2013.

United CEO ‘ashamed’ after watching video of man’s forced removal

The Associated Press CHICAGO – United Airlines sought to quell the uproar over a man being dragged off a plane by announcing Tuesday that it would no longer ask police to remove passengers from full flights and would compensate customers who were on the flight when the man was removed.

In an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” aired Wednesday, United parent company CEO Oscar Munoz said he felt “ashamed” watching video of the man being forced off the jet. He has promised to review the airline’s passenger-removal policy.

Munoz, who leads United’s parent company, apologized again to Kentucky physician David Dao, his family and the other passengers who witnessed him being taken off the flight.

“That is not who our family at United is,” he said. “This will never happen again on a United flight. That’s my promise.”

Organization sues over immigrant detained in Ill.

CHICAGO – A Honduran immigrant who said he posted bail but remains jailed in northern Illinois jail on the request of immigration authorities has filed a federal complaint calling his detention unconstitutional.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund sued on behalf of Emil Santos of Fox Lake.

Santos was arrested April 1 on domestic violence charges. The lawsuit said his sister posted bail, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a detainer,

Plans in works for $130M hospital project in Rockford

ROCKFORD – A $130 million hospital renovation and construction project in Rockford is in the works.

SwedishAmerican – a division of UW Health – announced plans for the project that will include a new four-story building and an upgrade of an intensive care unit so that it can provide the state-of-the-art care for newborns.

Dr. Bill Gorski is the president and CEO of SwedishAmerican. He told the (Rockford) Register Star the project could begin in September. He said it might create 600 union construction jobs and ultimately lead to the hiring of as many as 96 physicians.

Spicer says Hitler comment ‘inexcusable and reprehensible’

Trump: U.S.-Russia relations may be at an ‘all-time low’

WASHINGTON – With tensions rising over Syria and other issues, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that U.S. relations with Russia “may be at an all-time low” as he moved ever further away from his campaign promises to establish better ties with Moscow.

“Right now we’re not getting along with Russia at all,” Trump said flatly during a White House news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Soltenberg.

It was a grim assessment that echoed the words of Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who left an almost twohour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow declaring the countries had reached a “low point” in relations.

Trump said Tillerson had completed a successful meeting with Putin, where “things went pretty well.” But he said it was an open question where relations go from here. He said “it would be a fantastic thing” if the two nations got along better but cautioned that “it may be just the opposite.”

Could Syria have launched the chemical weapons attack with Russia’s advance knowledge? Trump said it was “certainly possible” though “probably unlikely.”

The less-than-positive assessments of relations by both Trump and Tillerson reflected the former Cold War foes’ inability to forge greater cooperation, as Trump until recently has advocated.

More than 80 people were killed in what the U.S. has described as a nerve gas attack that Assad’s forces undoubtedly carried out. Russia says rebels were responsible for whatever

chemical agent was found, which the Trump administration calls a disinformation campaign.

The Moscow news conference came after Putin met Tillerson for the first time since Trump took office. The diplomats know each other well from Tillerson’s days as Exxon Mobil CEO. Putin had even honored Tillerson with a friendship award.

Beyond Syria, Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election also hovered over what was the first face-to-face encounter between Putin and any Trump administration Cabinet member.

Lavrov blasted U.S. claims that it has “irrefutable evidence” of election interference.

“We have not seen a single fact, or even a hint of facts,” he said. “I do not know who saw them. No one showed us anything, no one said anything, although we repeatedly asked to produce the details on which these unfounded accusations lie.”

He also rejected American claims of incontrovertible evidence that Assad ordered the chemical attack.

Still, Tillerson sought to stress the positives from his meetings. He said working groups would be established to improve U.S.-Russian ties and identify problems. He said the two sides would also discuss disagreements on Syria and how to end the country’s six-year civil war.

But such hopes appeared optimistic as the diplomats outlined their sharply diverging views on Syria. Until the chemical attack, the Trump administration had sought to step back from the U.S. position that Assad should leave power. But Tillerson repeated the administration’s new belief that “the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end.”

Bannon, more than any other White House aide, speaks the language of Trump’s populist base. He spoke in February of “our sovereignty” as a country and about the new administration’s aim for “deconstruction of the administrative state.” He also helped write many of Trump’s hardest-line speeches.

“It would be a terrible signal if Trump were to either force Bannon out or let him go because he is the face of the national populism that inspired a lot of voter to vote for Trump,” said Ned Ryun, founder of the conservative group American Majority and a longtime friend of Bannon’s.

“And what makes it even worse right now,” Ryun added, “is that people have deep concerns about liberal New York Democrats associated with Goldman Sachs coming in and making strong moves at the White House.”

That view cuts to the core of why Bannon might be on the outs at the White House.

He’s feuded with Trump’s sonin-law-turned-senior-adviser, Jared Kushner, and with economic chief Gary Cohn. Both are New Yorkers who have voted for Democrats. Cohn, the former No. 2 at Goldman Sachs, and fellow Goldman executive Dina Powell,

one of Trump’s top national security advisers, have been gaining favor with the president.

Last week, Trump removed Bannon from the National Security Council, while Powell appears to be ascendant.

The president’s irritation with Bannon could have roots in the adviser’s high profile in the early days of the administration. Democrats waged a campaign to brand him as “President Bannon.” He appeared on Time magazine’s cover and was portrayed on “Saturday Night Live” as the Grim Reaper pulling the president’s strings.

Recently, the president has undercut Bannon in front of other senior staffers, including questioning the need for his presence in certain White House meetings.

Bannon is seen as increasingly isolated within the White House, particularly after the health care debacle. His hard-line sales pitch to the Freedom Caucus lawmakers – he told the Republicans that the White House-based legislation was not up for debate – was panned inside the West Wing as a major misstep that cost Trump votes. The original travel ban, a Bannon effort, is mired in the courts, and Trump appears to be backing away from some of the economic policies that Bannon championed.

BEIJING – Beijing is willing to work with Washington on ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons program but wants a peaceful solution to the escalating conflict, Chinese President Xi Jinping told President Donald Trump in a phone call Wednesday.

Xi’s comments came after Trump tweeted that China should do more on an issue that Washington sees as an increasingly urgent threat, or else the U.S. would go it alone.

China’s calls for calm come as tensions have risen with the dispatch of a U.S. aircraft carrier to the area and the deployment of thousands of U.S. and South Korean troops, tanks and other weaponry for their biggest-ever joint military exercises.

During their phone call, Xi told Trump that China is willing to continue working with the U.S. on denuclearization, according to a brief description of the call released by the Chinese foreign ministry.

“China insists on realizing the denuclearization of the peninsula, insists on maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula, and advocates resolving the problem through peaceful means,” Xi was quoted as saying.

The two leaders spoke Tuesday night Washington time after Trump said an “armada” of vessels including the USS Carl Vinson carrier was steaming to waters off the Korean Peninsula in a show of force.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a regular briefing in Beijing on Wednesday that it was a “good thing” that the two leaders were in touch again days after meeting in Florida.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has declared: “I am my own strategist.” That would seem to bode poorly for his actual strategist, Steve Bannon.

And Trump now appears to be publicly distancing himself.

In an interview with The New York Post, the president said “I like Steve” and called his adviser “a good guy” – but one who wasn’t really all that involved with his winning election campaign. He said his warring senior officials, including Bannon, must “straighten it out or I will.” In a second interview with The Wall Street Journal, he dismissively called Bannon “a guy who works for me.”

The unusual public, lukewarm support from the boss has Bannon’s friends and advisers worried he will soon be out of a job. But shedding Bannon would be no simple staff shakeup. More than any other member of Trump’s orbit, the former media executive and radio host, known as a bare-knuckles political fighter, has a following all his own. He is viewed by many in the conservative core as the ideological backbone in a White House run by a president who boasts of his flexibility.

“I think it’s important to recognize the value of the base. It’s important to recognize the base sees their advocate in Steve Bannon,” said Michael Caputo, a former Trump campaign adviser who has known the president for decades.

Bannon is not the only Trump official to find himself in the hot seat in a White House divided. Press Secretary Sean Spicer has also come under fire for comments he made about the Holocaust on Tuesday. Spicer has apologized repeatedly, including on Wednesday, and the White House hopes that controversy will pass.

As for Bannon, before joining the campaign last summer as its chief executive officer, he was informally advising Trump. And as leader of the conservative Breitbart News he spent the better part of a year connecting Trump with the populist, nationalist voters who would propel him to victory over 16 Republican opponents and Democrat Hillary Clinton.

In more than half a dozen interviews during the campaign with Bannon on Breitbart’s radio show, Trump laid out his vision for leading the country, with Bannon sometimes playing the role of

Rich Miller I suppose it’s too much to expect that we get an honest debate about the need for more state revenues in the already active gubernatorial race. Candidates will be candidates and voters will be voters, after all.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign blasted out an email last week telling supporters that newly announced billionaire Democratic candidate JB Pritzker wants to raise the state income tax to over 5 percent, which, the campaign claimed, would be “higher than it was under Pat Quinn.”

Nevermind that Rauner himself privately supports raising state taxes to historically high levels. He’s OK with a 4.99 percent income tax rate and a 7 percent corporate tax rate. But he also backs a new tax on sugary beverages and a new sales tax on several services. If all that was implemented, the state government would be taxing residents billions of dollars more than it ever has before.

So, apparently, you can only be for the massive tax hikes that Rauner wants.

Otherwise, you’ll be portrayed as being in House Speaker Michael Madigan’s hip pocket.

The Illinois Republican Party obtained audio of Pritzker speaking at a private Democratic event. In one snippet, Pritzker is heard saying: “Let’s remind everybody, the tax used to be 5 percent, and [Rauner] let it lapse down to three and 33/4 percent. And that’s what started a lot of the problems that we’ve got in the state. So, if you just put it back, that’s $5 billion. That doesn’t get you everything you need, but it’s a good way toward, you know, toward getting real revenue in the state.”

The comment was eerily similar to one made by Speaker Madigan in late 2015.

“A good place to begin,” Madigan said back then, “would be the level we were at before the income tax expired. Starting there, you can go in whatever direction you want to go.” Rauner immediately pounced on that comment to claim that Madigan wanted to raise the income tax above 5 percent, even though he never actually said that.

Pritzker’s private comments along with a claim that he’s in league with Madigan’s “plan” were sent to reporters hours before Pritzker’s official campaign kickoff.

“I think that we ought to start with the millionaires and billionaires and

make sure that they’re paying taxes first,” Pritzker responded when asked, in apparent reference to a graduated income tax or a surcharge on the wealthy, “We’re not going to talk about raising taxes on middle-class families until we take care of that problem,” the Sun-Times reported.

But taxation like that would require a constitutional amendment because the state’s Constitution mandates a flat income tax. And that means it would require a three-fifths majority in both legislative chambers, and the Republicans (along with some Democrats) have historically resisted a graduated tax. So, forget it.

After Pritzker’s news conference, the Republicans released yet another audio snippet of Pritzker admitting the hard truth about a graduated tax: “So let’s just talk about this flat income tax, because we’re not going to be able to turn it into a millionaire’s tax, a fair tax – it’s gonna take us three years.”

The Republicans used that second snippet to claim that Pritzker wasn’t telling the truth to reporters earlier in the day.

And their point has merit.

Rauner insists his plan is better because tax hikes are coupled with his reforms. But even his full package of reforms from back in 2015 would’ve only slightly moved the economic and budgetary needles, according to his very own analysis that he sent to legislators that year. His reform demands have since been significantly scaled back. And while some of his reforms are undoubtedly needed (particularly workers’ comp costs), much of the rest is little more than political window dressing (term limits) and have next to nothing to do with spurring growth.

We are in this hole because our leaders refused to be honest, starting with the 2011 “temporary” tax hike, right through the 2014 campaign, then allowing the tax hike to partially expire and then fighting over who would blink first on raising taxes and accepting “reforms.”

And the public prefers the lies. Polls show Illinoisans are convinced somebody else should solve the problem, either millionaires via taxation (which wouldn’t raise enough cash) or the faceless bureaucracy via cuts (except for just about every state program under the sun).

Again, I suppose it’s too much to ask that candidates and the governor are honest about this stuff. But that means this contest could not only turn out to be the most expensive in Illinois history, it could also be the most dishonest.

Internet privacy legislation worth effort Internet privacy is among the latest hot-button debates, in part, because of a likely rollback of Obama-era privacy protections that were supposed to take place later this year.

That got the attention of some Illinois lawmakers who are looking to implement internet safeguards at the state level, including one that would allow people to find out what companies such as Google and Facebook have collected on them and which third parties they share it with.

We think that is a good idea.

Most people don’t understand how a lot of this works, but just about everyone recoils at the thought of their privacy being invaded. With the internet, it is happening more and more frequently.

Surveillance of one kind or another has become the business model of the internet.

Last fall, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that if internet service providers want to collect and sell personal information, such as your browsing history, they needed to get your permission first – that is, ask you to “opt-in” to their data-sharing programs.

But the GOP-led Congress voted to revoke the opt-in provision and President Trump signed the resolution last week.

Supporters of protections like Illinois is considering – a House committee has endorsed the measure – say they are needed because of what is going on in D.C.

The federal regulations would place restrictions on what companies such as Comcast and Verizon can do with information, including user search histories, but not websites.

Privacy advocates say the move sends a clear signal that it’s up to individual states to step into this “right to know” debate and try to correct it.

Not surprisingly, the tech industry is largely against the proposed requirements, saying they would burden companies with an unnecessary layer of regulation and compliance costs, while stifling innovation.

Supporters of the Illinois bill disagree, contending that similar requirements in the European Union and in California, which enacted a similar measure in 2000, have not hurt business.

It’s no surprise that the American Civil Liberties Union’s Illinois chapter is backing the bill, telling The Associated Press that such legislation is needed to address the now “razor-thin” division between government and private entities that can sell data to federal agencies.

In the end, maybe this ship has sailed. Maybe there is no good way to protect our basic privacy because the internet has become such a pervasive part of our everyday lives. But efforts like the one in Illinois is worth it, if for no other reason than to initiate a dialogue over our threatened right to privacy.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One of the things that Heather Suca likes most about her Joliet West softball team is that they’ll keep battling until the very end of games.

And that quality was definitely on display Wednesday when the Tigers hosted Lockport in a clash involving two of the area’s top teams.

West took a 7-0 lead through three innings, only to see the Porters storm back to go up 8-7 in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer from Courtney Schoolcraft.

But trying to avoid consecutive defeats and its third loss of the season, West responded by getting a two-run blast from Savana DelRose in the bottom of that inning to pull out a wild 9-8 nonconference victory on the west side.

“What I like the most is that we just keep coming back,” Suca said.

“That was a huge, clutch hit for Savana, who needed that since she had been hitting well all day and finally got a hold of one completely. The same for Morgan Gersch, who had been hitting the ball decently but hadn’t gotten those key hits to give her confidence, so this was a big game for her, too.

“All up and down the lineup we’ve been hitting the ball and we just have to keep doing that while we clean up a few things on defense. I don’t just want them to make the routine plays but to make the above-routine plays, that’s what we need to work on and we will. The girls never got down

Lockport (12-1), which was off to its best start since 1997, looked like it had staged a classic comeback after Schoolcraft (2 for 4) sent one over the fence in right center to give her team its only lead of the day.

But DelRose (3 for 4, three RBIs) cranked one to left to finally end the drama and improve West to 8-2 on the season.

“After struggling at the plate yes-

terday, we wanted it that much more today,” DelRose said. “We started off the game strong and never lost our desire to win the game and I think that’s why we won. We have so much heart on this team and we’re all so close, so it’s easy for us to bounce back in sticky situations. We knew that Lockport would be such a hard team to beat and we wanted this one so bad.”

Going into Tuesday’s play, Lockport was averaging 13.4 runs and 14.5

hits, while West was averaging 9.1 runs and 10.6 hits. But the Porters were held to season lows in hits and runs against Bradley-Bourbonnais, and the Tigers got four hits and no runs against Romeoville.

West quickly returned to form by collecting five hits in their trip to the plate and had nine hits through three innings, scoring three times apiece in the first and third frames.

Connor Peplow (2-0) pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings in relief, striking out five, to get the win for North (9-2, 2-0).

Greg Budig knocked in an insurance run with a seventh-inning double.

To open the eighth inning, Fleischauer dove to his left to snag a hot shot, got up, spun around and threw a strike to first to get the out.

“Fleischauer, Michalak, [center fielder] Burton, Dan [Darling, the catcher], the guys made some plays behind me,” said Riordan, who threw his second straight shutout and third in all. He allowed six hits over the nine innings while walking three and striking out three.

Still, Riordan (6-1) was locked in a tight battle until USF put up the 6-spot in the bottom of the sixth.

With runners on second and third and one out, the left-handed hitting Michalak made contact, hitting a high bouncer to third. The third baseman threw home as a run scored on the fielder’s choice to make it 2-0.

“The kid [former Minooka and JJC standout Brennan Polcyn] was working me outside,” Michalak said. “He left one over the plate and I was able to put it in play.”

Freshman designated hitter Travis Schoonover [Reed-Custer] fol-

lowed with a two-run double to end Polcyn’s day, and before the inning ended, CJ Duffek singled in a run and Tom Smith (Lockport, JJC) doubled home a pair.

“I got an outside fastball, tried to get it in the air and got it in the gap,” Schoonover said. “It was huge to get the second one after we lost the first game.”

Mampe (4-3) had gone the distance for the Saints in the seven-inning opener, allowing seven hits and the two unearned runs. He walked two and struck out six. However, Judson lefty Ty Parquette (7-0) was a little better, throwing a one-hitter and yielding three walks and striking out five.

“We didn’t give free bases in Game 2, we pitched and played defense,” USF coach Brian Michalak said. “In the first game, Kevin Mampe pitched real well, but we gave away a few free bases, and that was the difference in the game.

“How easily one loss can become two, and the guys battled back and didn’t let that happen. Since we lost the first five games on the southern trip, we have been playing pretty well.

We feel good about the direction we are going.”

JCA athletes feted on letter-of-intent signing day

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For a long while, Reilly Jo Swanson has had designs on playing Division I softball.

From the time she made her first trip to Philadelphia, she knew that was the setting she preferred.

It all came together for the Joliet Catholic Academy second baseman Wednesday when she signed a national letter of intent to attend Division I Drexel on a softball scholarship.

“I went to visit a couple of schools in Philly,” said Swanson, a four-year varsity regular sporting a .398 career batting average. “The other one was the University of Pennsylvania, in the Ivy League, which doesn’t give athletic scholarships.

“Drexel is a high-end academic program, too.”

And there was that other factor.

“I love their coach [Carl Taylor],” Swanson said. “I feel like he and my dad have the same mindset.”

Swanson was one of three Angels’ softball players, along with 15 other JCA senior athletes, to be feted at Wednes-

day’s national letter-of-intent signing day celebration at the school.

The other softball players were third baseman Paige Callans (Lindenwood) and pitcher Kailey Kovas (Cornell College).

Softball coach Tina Kinsella emphasized how Callans not only is the starting second baseman, but also may be the team’s best outfielder. “And, she very, very seldom strikes out,” Kinsella added.

Callans is a left-handed slap hitter and bunter who has started at third base the last three years and has a .372 batting average and .975 career fielding percentage. Kovas, in her first varsity season, “is showing a great presence on the mound,” Kinsella said.

Also heading to a Division I program is Angels soccer player Emma Ehrsam, who also played basketball. She is headed to Division I Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, where her brother Danny, a JCA graduate, is a front-line starting pitcher for the baseball team.

“I’m not going there because Danny is there, but it did help when I visited there,” Ehrsam said. “He took me around, and I got to see everything. I like

the campus. It’s kind of in a circle, so it’s all right there.”

Ehrsam played defense with her club team and mainly is in midfield or at forward for JCA. Angels coach Oscar Valdez cited her quickness, versatility and never-give-up attitude.

He used similar descriptions for Alyson Egizio, who will continue her soccer career at Webster University.

The other girls involved in Wednesday’s celebration were golfer Jennifer Filotto (Augustana), the team leader three years running; volleyball player Taylor Zurliene (Elmhurst), and discus and shot put thrower Jamie Stolfo (St. Francis).

Volleyball coach Christine Scheibe said that Zurliene joined elite company.

She is Scheibe’s third four-year starter, with the others Samantha Quigley and Olympian Kelly Murphy. JCA went to state twice with Zurliene in the lineup.

The boys cited Wednesday included volleyball player Michael Tillman (Clarke University). Coach Rhyen Staley said, “You would not know Michael is the same player as a year ago.”

is defensive end Andrew Hartsell (Ball State as a preferred walkon), all-purpose Rio Strama (St. Francis) and defensive lineman Andrew Warf (Dubuque) to colleges. Sharp noted Strama can play defensive back, receiver, running back, kick returner – just about anywhere.

From coach Jared Voss’ baseball team, pitchers Brendon Wills (Indiana-South Bend), Alex Analytis (Indiana-South Bend), Alec Hartsell (Heartland) and Antonio Saldana (Iowa Western), infielder Michael O’Brien (St. Ambrose) and catcher/infielder Jack Surin (Benedictine) also made their intentions known.

“If any of us is reincarnated as a baseball player, we would want to be a 6-6 left-handed pitcher,” Voss said, referring to Saldana. He added that Saldana is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 27 strikeouts and six walks in 172/3 innings. Similarly, Wills is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA, eight walks and 27 strikeouts in 23 innings.

As for Surin, who had interest from higher-level programs and also was a key in coach Joe Gura’s basketball program, Voss said, “Benedictine is getting a real steal.”

The Saints did that, scoring six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow open a close game and beat Judson 7-0 behind the six-hit pitching of sophomore right-hander John Riordan.

Judson (26-12, 12-2) leads the CCAC North by a wide margin, and USF (2713, 12-2) has been equally dominant in the CCAC South as the league season nears the midway point. The team with the best conference record automatically qualifies for the NAIA postseason series, as does the winner of the CCAC Tournament.

“It was good to see the team bounce back after we lost Game 1,” said Saints junior left fielder Pat Michalak, a Lincoln-Way Central graduate who earned one of the gold gloves on this day.

Kyle Burton led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, and the Saints still were up 1-0 entering the top of the sixth. After a one-out walk, Michalak raced into the gap in left-center, dove and caught a line drive off the bat of Josh Krueger (Romeoville). Krueger hit four shots in Game 2 and went 0-for-4.

The next batter, Eagles cleanup man Cullen Mayhew, belted a long drive to left that Michalak stayed with and grabbed before bouncing into the left-field fence.

“On the line drive, I just tried to cut it off before it went into the gap,” Michalak said. “I could see it was hanging up a little, and fortunately when I dove, I caught it.

“The next guy up, the 4-hitter, has some pop. I took the first step back and was fortunate to see it and then catch it.”

Another magician with the leather was third baseman Nick Fleischauer (Minooka, JJC).

Judson had a runner on first base with one out in the fourth when Fleischauer pursued a pop foul down the left field line. He made the catch while falling and then, from the seat of his pants, managed to throw a strike to

Cubs get World Series rings with historic championship

CHICAGO – The Cubs have their rings to go with that historic championship.

The team was given its crowning jewels before Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with fans at Wrigley Field roaring as the ceremony unfolded. That put the final punctuation on a celebration 108 years in the making, one that started when the Cubs beat Cleveland in Game 7 last November for their first World Series title since 1908.

They raised the championship banner on Monday night at Wrigley and got their sparkling rewards Wednesday.

Each 14-karat white gold ring has a total of 214 diamonds, three karats of red rubies and 2.5 karats of sapphires.

The top of the ring features 33 red rubies forming the team’s bull’s-eye logo, and the bezel features 108 round white diamonds – one for each year of the drought.

No wonder the rings arrived at Wrigley Field in an armored truck on Tuesday.

A highlight video kicked off the festivities. Commissioner Rob Manfred then presented rings to members of the Ricketts family that owns the team, starting with chairman Tom Ricketts and his wife.

For the players, the Cubs added a different twist. In a nod to the support they received through more than a century of heartbreak and frustration, the team had 20 contest-winning fans serve as

ring bearers for the guys in gloves and cleats.

“Based on 108 years of difficulties, I think it’s the perfect method to do this,” Maddon said.

Ranging from 13 to 90 years old, the fans were selected from a pool of more than 1,500 video submissions on Twitter.

They were nominated by friends, family and co-workers.

They included Jimmy Thurman, a

90-year-old World War II veteran from Kewanee, Illinois. In his submission, a mock “Tonight Show” video, he recalled becoming a Cubs fan in the late 1930s because his mom was. He passed that love down through his family, and he got to hand 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta his ring.

Was the night all he hoped it would be?

“It was more,” Thurman said. “My greatest one was 65 years ago when I married my wife (Wilma). That was No. 1, but this is right behind it.”

Joanne Harrer of Naperville was nominated by her granddaughter, Amanda.

In the video, Amanda recalled watching countless games on TV and trips to Milwaukee and Washington with her grandma. Joanne Harrer also showed off an impressive collection of Cubs shirts. The two were flying to Arizona for spring training when they got an email saying they were among the winners.

“This is one of the best moments of my life,” said Joanne Harrer, who presented pitcher Mike Montgomery with his ring. “It’s just been wonderful. I still can’t believe all this is happening.”

Amy Liss of Downers Grove, a motivational speaker born with cerebral palsy, got wheeled out by her twin sister, Kelly Moreland, to hand Kris Bryant his ring.

Indeed. Better than fine, in fact, as left-hander Derek Holland was in the Sox’ 2-1 victory Wednesday against the Indians at Progressive Field.

Signed to a one-year deal in the offseason to cover innings left by the traded Sale, Holland pitched six frames of two-run ball in his Sox debut against the Twins on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field, and topped that with six innings of scoreless, one-hit work against the defending American League champions. He pitched around four walks, striking out four.

Since Jose Quintana served up three homers and lost to the Tigers on Opening Day, Sox starters Holland, James Shields, Quintana and Miguel Gonzalez have made good on six straight winnable starts, posting a 2.06 ERA.

“That’s good,’’ Holland said. “We feed off each other.”

The Sox bullpen has been pretty good, too, ranking second in the AL in ERA going into Wednesday’s game.

Anthony Swarzak pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts in his Sox debut, Nate Jones kept a potential big inning at one run in the eighth, and David Robertson pitched a perfect ninth.

The win, following a 2-1 loss in 10 innings in the Indians home opener Tuesday, improved the Sox record to 3-4. Holland, an Ohio native, lowered his career ERA in the Indians park to 1.02, the lowest of any visiting pitcher there with at least 30 innings of work.

He is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA. “He continues to try to pound the zone, and he’s been able to keep them off-balance,” manager Rick Renteria said. “He is spotting his fastball very well and his secondary pitches have been very good.”

This start had special meaning for

Holland because his grandmother, Pat Henderson, who passed away during spring training, saw him pitch for the last time here.

Holland said he will write “Granny” in the dirt on the back side of the mound in all of his starts this season.

“I love pitching here. This is where I’m from,” he said. “This game meant a lot more to me. This is where she got to see me pitch for the last time.”

Holland had all sorts of things, emotional and otherwise, racing through his mind. When Francisco Lindor stepped up to lead off the Indians’ sixth, the scoreboard showed Holland finishing his warmup tosses and read, “Derek Holland, currently pitching a no-hitter.” If you believe in jinxes, there goes your proof: Lindor lined his 83rd pitch to the left-center field gap for a double.

“I saw it,” Holland said. “You got to do what you got to do to break it up.

I understand. I had fans yelling at me from the fourth on, telling me ‘hey you got a no-hitter.’ I was like, ‘Thank you

Captain Obvious. I kind of know that.’ ” Indians right-hander Danny Salazar was about as good, if not better, than Holland, striking out 11 and allowing less hard contact than Holland in six innings.

The Sox got to Salazar in the second when Cody Asche walked, advanced to third on Avisail Garcia’s double and plated two runs on Matt Davidson’s single to left.

Davidson, a last-minute replacement for the ill Todd Frazier at third base, tied Garcia for the team RBI lead with five. Garcia has hit safely in all seven games.

Those two runs were just enough, thanks mainly to “The Dutch Oven.”

“He was amazing tonight,” said Robertson, who has six strikeouts in three scoreless innings of work. “He looked very calm and relaxed. Threw a lot of pitches that were close [ball-strike] calls that could have gone either way.

He filled up the zone and did what a starter is supposed to do.”

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler scored 25 points, and the Bulls beat the depleted Brooklyn Nets, 112-73, in the regular-season finale to clinch an Eastern Conference playoff spot on Wednesday.

Paul Zipser added a career-high 21 points off the bench as the Bulls took advantage of a short-handed Brooklyn lineup to secure its first playoff appearance under coach Fred Hoiberg.

On Tuesday, the Nets, owners of the worst record in the league, announced Trevor Booker, Jeremy Lin and Brook Lopez would be out due to rest, while Quincy Acy (ankle), Joe Harris (shoulder) and Sean Kilpatrick (hamstring) because of injuries.

On Saturday, the Nets defeated the Bulls in Brooklyn, 107-106, behind Lopez’s 13 points and Lin’s 12 points.

The decision was controversial, especially with Miami, who needed the Bulls to lose in order to have a chance at the playoffs.

“I’m going to be honest as a compet-

itor, I understand it, I understand the point of view that some of you have, some of the press has and maybe other teams, I do understand it,” Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson said before the game.

High-scoring lines face off when Predators meet Blackhawks

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Viktor Arvidsson, Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg helped power Nashville into the playoffs with a dazzling finish to the season. Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin piled up points for the Blackhawks down the stretch, and Artem Anisimov is set to return from a left leg injury.

Two of the NHL’s Patrick Kane most dangerous lines face off when the Predators take on the Hawks in the first round of the playoffs, beginning with Game 1 on Thursday night in Chicago. The production of those potent trios could go a long way to determining which team advances to the Western Conference semifinals.

“I think our confidence is high,” Forsberg said Wednesday. “The last part of the season I think we’ve been playing really good hockey and obviously produced against any team, really. So it’s going to be a lot of fun and excited to get going, and hopefully we can be a key factor in the series.”

Since Dec. 26, Forsberg ranks third in the NHL with 26 of his 31 goals.

Kane is tied for fourth with 24 goals in that stretch, and Arvidsson is tied for ninth with 22. Arvidsson, who just turned 24 on Saturday, set career highs with 30 goals and 31 assists, and Johansen led the Predators with a career-best 47 assists.

Like all great lines, Forsberg, Johansen and Arvidsson can hurt opponents in a variety of ways.

“You got the speedy little shifty guy in Arvidsson that’s everywhere and he’s a good goal-scorer, too,” Hawks’ defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said.

“You reach the 30-goal mark, which is really tough to do in this league, and then you have Forsberg that’s just a pure sniper, that you don’t really notice him that much every game, but then he gets one chance and he just buries it right away. So you just have to be focused every single shift against that guy, and Johansen is a great playmaker.”

Nashville dropped four of five against the Hawks this season, but its top line had some success. Johansen had seven assists in the season series, Arvidsson scored three times and Forsberg had a goal and two assists.

“I just think in general, with the top lines, you want to play in the other team’s end as much as you can,” Hawks’ defenseman Duncan Keith

said. “Skilled offensive players are going to want to play offense and be on the attack, so if we can keep them in their own end, force them to play defense, it’s better off for us.”

Anisimov was working on a career year when he got hurt in the first period of a 4-2 win at Montreal on March 14, shelving the big center for the rest of the season. He had to be helped from the ice after Canadiens forward Alexander RadArtemi ulov fell on the back of his leg in a corner bePanarin hind the Hawks’ goal.

The 28-year-old Anisimov started skating again about a week ago and said he is ready to go for the playoffs.

He gives the Hawks a big, physical presence in front of the net, an ideal center for the flashy skills of Kane and Panarin.

“With Artie, I think we’re comfortable with him,” Kane said. “We’re comfortable with a lot of players, but at the same time, it seems like we’ve had the most success with him.”

Here are some other things to watch: Recent memory: The Hawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, but they lost to St. Louis in the first round last season. The Hawks rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force a Game 7 in St. Louis, but the Blues advanced with a 3-2 win.

“We still think about it,” goaltender Corey Crawford said. “Our goal is to win a championship every year.

When you don’t, you have that hunger to get back there.”

Familiar foes: The Hawks eliminated the Predators in the first round of the playoffs in 2010 and 2015. The Predators blew leads of 3-0 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 6 of the 2015 series.

“I love the way we played Chicago,” coach Peter Laviolette said of the most recent series. “I just hated the result. I hated the fact that we lost in six games.”

Home sweet home: Since Joel Quenneville took over as coach in 2008, the Hawks have won 10 of 11 playoff series when they had home-ice advantage. They went 26-10-5 at home this season.

Ailing: Nashville forwards Colin Wilson and Calle Jarnkrok each missed practice on Wednesday with lower-body injuries. They are questionable for Game 1.

JOLIET – Think Passover and Holy Week. Often special prayers and services come to mind.

But mixed in with the spiritual services are spiritual reasons for food prepared during this time. Here’s a glance at several traditions – and a few recipes – used by Joliet area residents.

PASSOVER

In a recent Herald-News story, Rabbi Charles Rubovits from Joliet Jewish Congregation said Christians are becoming interested in the details of the Passover celebration because “Jesus’ last supper was a Seder Passover.”

But Passover, which began April 10 this year and will conclude April 18, and which often overlaps with the Christian Easter, is a holiday in its own right, when members of the Jewish faith commemorate the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt.

Due to their hurried escape, the Israelites had no time for bread to rise.

Therefore, yeast and foods prepared with yeast are prohibited during a Seder, Rubovits said. Consequently matzo, an unleavened bread, is central to foods prepared for Passover.

“Making anything with matzo is difficult,” said Mark Turk, a member of Joliet Jewish Congregation. “When it’s mixed with water, it turns to cement.”

That’s why Turk recommends his wife Celeste Turk’s Passover rolls.

“Hers are wonderful, so tender and flaky in texture,” Mark said.

Yield: 12 rolls 2 cups matzo meal 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 1 cup water 1/2 cup oil 4 eggs Combine matzo meal with salt and sugar in a medium bowl.

Bring oil and water to boil in a small pot.

Add to matzo meal mixture. Mix well.

Beat eggs in thoroughly, one at a time. Allow to stand for 15 minutes.

With oiled hands, shape into rolls and place on well-greased cookie sheet or bake on parchment (best option).

Bake at 375 degrees for 50 minutes or until golden brown.

Matzo also can be used in meatloaf prepared during Passover. Mark Turk submitted a recipe from Pearl Pufeles.

She died in 2010, but her recipes and the memory of her wonderful cooking and baking lives on.

“Anything Pearl made was absolutely wonderful,” said Mark Turk, who knew Pufeles at Joliet Jewish Congregation. “No one could bake like Pearl.”

Pearl Pufeles’ Passover Pinwheel Meat Loaf

Meat mixture: 2 pounds ground beef 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 eggs 3/4 cup matzo meal 1/4 cup tomato juice Filling: 2 matzos, finely broken 3 tablespoons minced onion 3 tablespoons oil 1/2 teaspoon salt Dash pepper 1/3 cup hot water 1/2 cup tomato-mushroom sauce Combine meat mixture.

Place between two sheets of waxed paper and press into 1/2-inch thick rectangle.

Mix filling ingredients.

Remove sheet of waxed paper from meat and spread filling over meat mixture.

Roll up jelly roll fashion.

Place in greased baking dish.

Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.

GOOD FRIDAY

Alicia Tocwish, secretary at St. Patrick Church in Joliet, recalls a dessert – Capiriotada – her grandmother used to make during Lent and Good Friday, although Tocwish herself has never made it and did not have a recipe for it.

Capiriotada is a Mexican bread pudding. It is prepared with toasted French bread, butter, cheese, milk, raisins and peanuts, and then covered it with a brown sugar cinnamon syrup, Tocwish said.

According to muybuenocookbook. com, “The bread is for the Body of Christ, the syrup is his blood, the cloves are the nails on the cross, the cinnamon sticks symbolize the wooden cross, and the melted cheese stands for the Holy Shroud.”

PALM SUNDAY

For 20 years, local Slovenians have marked Palm Sunday – the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey to enthusiastic crowds just days before the crowds clamored for his crucifixion – with a procession and a brunch.

Lillian Cepon of Joliet, one of the procession coordinators, said it begins from the Slovenian Cultural Center (also known as the Slovenian Catholic Center) in Lemont and ends at the Slovenian Catholic Mission in Lemont for Mass.

“I usually make all kinds of Jell-Os; we make potato salad,” Cepon said.

Yield: Two 4-by-11-inch loaves Yeast: 2 tablespoons dry yeast 1/2 cup lukewarm milk 1 tablespoon flour 1 tablespoon sugar Dough: 7 to 8 cups flour 6 beaten egg yolks Lemon zest 2 cups very warm whole milk 2 teaspoons salt 3/4 pound butter 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup sour cream Filling: 2 pounds ground nuts 3/4 cup butter 1 1/2 cup half-and-half 2 cups sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla 6 beaten egg whites 1 cup yellow raisins soaked in 1/4 cup rum overnight 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup honey Mix all yeast ingredients. Let it rise.

For the filling, warm up half-andhalf, add all ingredients and fold in egg whites.

Mix all dough ingredients with the yeast mixture, turn dough on floured board, knead a bit and place in a bowl; cover dough with a cloth.

Let dough rise in a warm place until double in bulk (60 to 90 minutes).

Roll dough on floured cloth, spread filling over dough.

Placed in greased potica or cake pans. Cookie spray may be used instead of greasing the pans.

Let potica rise 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Brush top with beaten yolk and 1 tablespoon milk. Bake at 325 degrees for one hour.

3 packages dry yeast 1 teaspoon salt Fold the flour and salt into the soft butter.

In a separate bowl, mix 12 egg yolks and two extra whole eggs into the sugar until it liquefies.

In a third bowl, dissolve three packages of yeast in a cup of warm water.

When the yeast bubbles in the warm water, add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture.

Then add the egg/sugar mixture.

Work into the dough and knead well. Make sure you keep the dough soft and not too stiff. Use flour sparingly.

Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a towel and allow to rise in a warm place for two hours.

If you like the eggs to be baked into the bread, boil the eggs first. We

usually dyed the eggs and refrigerated them in advance before we place them into the loaves.

When the dough has risen, divide into loafs (depending on size and shape, but usually two to three loaves). Place the loaves on the side, cover and allow to raise for another hour.

When ready, braid the loaves as you wish and place the eggs into the weaves (whatever you like). You can brush beaten egg whites on top if you wish. My family placed the bread on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

Bake in a 350-degree oven until golden (the time depends on the size of the loaf but start with a half an hour).

After the bread is golden, you can put a glaze and/or sprinkles on the baked bread as well.

That’s why it’s important to know your numbers, and to monitor blood pressure on a regular basis.

To reduce blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight. It’s also wise to keep track of your waistline measurements. Men who measure more than 40 inches at the waist and women whose waistlines measure more than 35 inches are at increased risk of developing high blood pressure.

Get moving. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of vascular dementia by 40 percent. Just 30 minutes of exercise at moderate intensity – you’ll be able to speak but not sing – three times a week helps protect both your heart and your brain.

If you’ve been following this column for even a few weeks you know what’s coming next – don’t smoke. If you do smoke, please stop. Yes, we know that’s hard. We also know your family doctor would love to help you.

Eat a healthy diet: lean meats, fresh fish, legumes, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Skip the sugar if you can. Limit simple carbs such as pasta, rice, bread and processed cereals.

Limit how much alcohol you drink. Even in moderation, alcohol has been linked to dementia risk, particularly as we get older.

Dear Reader: Dementia is a general term used to categorize symptoms that relate to the decline or loss of cognitive function.

These include confusion, memory loss, impaired language skills, changes in personality or behavior, and the inability to think clearly or perform everyday tasks. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for between 60 and 80 percent of all dementia cases. The mental impairment of Alzheimer’s disease results from a series of complex changes that take place within the structure of the brain itself.

Vascular dementia, which also is called vascular cognitive impairment, causes the majority of non-Alzheimer’s cases of dementia. It occurs when the blood vessels in the body, known as the vascular system, become blocked, diseased or damaged, and are unable to provide the brain with normal blood flow. This deprives the brain of adequate oxygen and nutrition, which causes brain cells to die. The resulting injury, which prevents different parts of the brain from communicating with one another, causes symptoms of dementia.

Hardening and narrowing of the arteries, a major stroke or a series of small strokes can cause vascular dementia. In the case of major stroke, symptoms of vascular dementia can appear suddenly.

But quite often, the disease builds slowly.

As blood flow to the brain decreases, mental impairment gradually becomes more pronounced.

At this time, vascular dementia cannot be reversed, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing it.

Although the disease is rare before age 65, the cardiovascular problems that led to it can begin to develop well before then.

After having three consecutive sixheart contracts while playing with my wife online at bridgebase.com last month, the next evening, the robots (computer-controlled opponents) got some revenge in this deal.

Note North’s correct two-diamond response. With game-going values, bid your longest suit first. Since the robots use two-over-one game-forcing, I would have been inclined to rebid two hearts with that South hand, but the robots were playing that three clubs promised extra strength.

The next two calls were natural, then four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood. South’s six-heart reply showed an odd number of key cards (here, two aces and the heart king) and a spade void. Scientific bidders, those robots!

I led my singleton diamond.

Declarer rose with dummy’s ace and, presumably in the dummy for the last time, cashed all four spade winners, discarding three clubs and a diamond from hand. Then South drew trumps and conceded one diamond trick.

(Yes, the fourth spade was unnecessarily dangerous.)

There were four tables in six notrump, which had 12 top tricks. Two pairs of robots tried six diamonds after the sequence one heart - two diamonds - three clubs - three no-trump - six diamonds. One was favored by the heart-jack start, but the other faced the club-jack lead, after which the contract was unmakable without the aid of X-ray vision.

The other 11 tables were in six hearts. One robot even made an overtrick when West led a low club, and declarer guessed to put up dummy’s queen.
