SHOREWOOD – Shorewood Trustee Edmund Murphy brought up the “elephant in the room” at Tuesday’s board meeting – Mayor Rick Chapman using village fuel to fill up his car.

Village trustees and officials discussed what will happen next in light of mailings sent out to residents showing what appears to be Chapman using village-owned gas for his car.

Resident Jim Lynch came to the meeting with a copy of the mailing, which has a picture of Feb. 15 surveillance footage and states, “Wouldn’t you like free gas?

Village president helps himself to your tax dollars.”

Village officials said policies on board purchases are being reviewed and auditors are looking into the situation.

Murphy said at a minimum he would like access to the gas pumps deactivated for Chapman. He said he also wanted the matter discussed at a board meeting, as they are televised.

“I’m very bothered by this,” he said.

Chapman was not at Tuesday’s meeting as he is visiting family in Buffalo, New York.

He sent an email April 6 to village trust-

He said he never used the village’s gas on weekends or at night. He said he also stopped using it over the past two months because he was using his Cadillac and his SUV for his election campaign.

Chapman said that criticism regarding his use of the village’s gas for his car was an “attempt to discredit” him and is related to the mayoral election, which he won against Trustee Cookie Kirkland by 34 votes, pending a final count of mail-in and provisional ballots. Chapman said the mailing showing the surveillance footage was distributed during election season.

Kirkland disputed that the mailing came from her campaign. She said she got it in the mail like other residents.

“I ran a very clean and honest campaign,” she said.

Murphy said in a phone interview before the meeting that Chapman’s use of village-owned gas is not a question of dollars but of ethics. He said if Chapman had gone through the proper procedure for reimbursing expenses, they would’ve been documented and approved by the board.

Joliet police: Shoe robbers arrested after house shooting

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said the suspects were located when someone fired a gun into their house a half hour after the theft.

Earlier Sunday, a 15-year-old boy used social media to arrange the sale of two pairs of Air Jordan sneakers for $175 per pair to a 17-year-old boy, Gregory said.

ees and officials stating he would be out of town and that when he returns for the board meeting April 25, he would explain the “fuel usage for my personal vehicle for village business.”

Trustee Anthony Luciano said he would like to give Chapman a chance to explain. He said he had hoped the explanation would’ve happened before Tuesday’s meeting.

“There’s many facets to what just happened. If this was able to happen for this amount of time with no one on this board knowing anything about it. … It disturbs me a great deal,” he said.

Luciano recommended village attorney Dave Silverman look at what the possible consequences could be from Chapman’s fuel use because a new board is coming in after the election earlier in the month and Luciano felt the matter should be taken care of by the current board.

Chapman said in a phone interview Tuesday before the board meeting that one of the reasons he wanted access to the village’s gas for his 1999 Cadillac was because he didn’t like filling out expense reports just for fuel, and he was frequently driving to meetings.

“I hate paperwork,” he said.

“One bullet went through the east wall of an upstairs bedroom and lodged in the opposite wall. No one was injured,” Gregory said.

But while officers were speaking with the homeowner, they encountered three juveniles who matched the description of the shoe bandits.

“They also came across the shoes and a 9-millimeter flare gun,” Gregory said.

The three teens were identified by the victims and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center on charges of armed robbery.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Syrenthia Eskridge choked back tears as she talked about Certified Warehouse Foods, the local supermarket that is closing its two Joliet stores.

“It’s going to be missed,” Eskridge said, standing by the checkout counter of the Jackson Street store. “This is like the neighborhood, convenient place that you came to do your shopping.”

The store meant more to her than Eskridge could put into words.

But she wasn’t the only customer to have been moved to tears at the loss of Certified Warehouse Foods, which closed its Richards Street store Tuesday and closes the Jackson Street store

“We were getting people who were crying when they first found out. I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my goodness,’ ” said Nora Toth, head cashier at the Jackson Street store.

But Toth, as she talked about her 30 years at the store, fought back tears herself at times.

“It’s almost like a small family,” she said, nodding toward cashier Connie Baker. “Connie’s been here 25 years.

Vicky is the newest. She’s only been here five years. Even though it’s work, and it’s business, you become friends.”

Toth became more than friends with store manager Pete Toth, whom she married.

Some people came to the store almost daily, chatting in the aisles, Nora Toth said. Pete Toth told how women in the neighborhood would bring cakes for Certified employees at Christmastime – sometimes fresh out of the oven.

“Those were great cakes,” Pete Toth said.

East Side ‘food desert’

Certified Warehouse Foods is a store that never got a lot of respect in Joliet.

It’s the last mainstream supermarket on the East Side, that has several Hispanic grocers. But Certified stores had plain exteriors and nothing fancy on the inside.

Although the store has been around since 1981, city politicians and community leaders over the years have talked about the East Side needing a grocery store, as if Certified Warehouse Foods didn’t exist.

Priest’s ‘stuff’ missing; Stateville service goes on

bokon@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – The Rev. Peter Jankowski will return to Stateville Correction Center for a Holy Thursday service, although what might be called “the case of the missing missalettes” has not been solved.

Jankowski has been seeking help in finding 40 missalettes, an altar crucifix, a metal chalice, priest stoles and several other items that went missing from a Stateville chaplain’s office.

Even the plastic bowl and pitcher he uses for a Holy Thursday feet washing service had disappeared.

“I don’t think they took my vestments. I’ll find out on Thursday,” Jankowski said.

Jankowski, the pastor at St. Patrick’s Parish in Joliet, has been doing prison ministry at Stateville since 2011.

He last celebrated Mass at the prison at Christmastime. After a vacation, he went to celebrate Mass at Stateville in February and learned that the items used for Mass were missing.

“I walked into Stateville for Mass, and when I walked in I was told none of my stuff was there,” Jankowski said.

He contacted prison officials and legislators seeking help, but to no avail.

A March 22 letter from Warden Randy Pfister expressed “our sincere apology for the mishap. There was no documentation of these items being confiscated or inventory of these items making it very difficult to substantiate what happened.”

a Catholic chaplain who had retired, Jankowski said. The office was not in use when the items disappeared, he said.

Jankowski said he had heard that the items disappeared after a search for contraband at Stateville.

The Illinois Department of Corrections sent an emailed statement about the missing items that said in part, “During a recent search at Stateville Correctional Center, some items were

not returned to the original location following the sweep. The majority of these items have been located and returned, and IDOC staff continues to search for the missing items.”

Jankowski said he has spent about $500 replacing the materials and will continue to celebrate Mass at the prison. He also will perform the Holy Thursday feet washing service he has done in past years.

The letter from the warden assures

Jankowski that the items kept at Stateville will be “listed on an inventory and secured in a safe place for future use.”

Jankowski noted that there are also two local deacons who provide Holy Communion to prisoners at Stateville, although he is the only Catholic priest who celebrates mass there.

Ministers from other denominations also serve prisoners at Stateville, which, according to IDOC, provides services for a wide variety of religions.

Sheriff’s office: opioid-related efforts have saved many lives

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Sheriff’s Office, like many other police agencies, is spending money to save lives while fighting the county’s opioid epidemic.

Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley and Deputy Jeff Jerz gave the Will County Board Public Health & Safety Committee an update on the sheriff’s office’s opioid-related programs Mike Kelley Thursday.

Jerz, the county’s 2016 Deputy of the Year, gave a presentation on Narcan, the opioid antidote that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose if administered in time. Kelley said Jerz has

been instrumental in training officers on how to use Narcan, adding that he’ll probably give out 12 to 15 life-saving awards soon because of lives saved in relation to Jerz’s training.

“It’s been pretty successful and he’s what made it successful,” Kelley said of Jerz.

The sheriff’s office started Narcan training a month before a state law was signed in May 2015 that mandated police departments use Narcan.

The first life-saving use of Narcan by the sheriff’s office was in March 2016.

The department has saved seven lives with Narcan.

The office has acquired and assigned more than 100 Narcan kits that will cover every level of the office from patrol to administration. The office has trained about 600 personnel on how to use Nar-

can. Training will continue every two years.

But because Narcan does expire, Jerz approximated the sheriff’s office will spend about $15,000 every 15 to 17 months to keep Narcan doses up to date.

Narcan weakens with time, and some who overdose require several doses.

Committee member Beth Rice, D-Bolingbrook, asked if people are tracked after their life is saved to see if they enter treatment. Kelley said hospitals may have that information but the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act prevents a complete picture of what happens to those individuals.

When an officer saves a life, some survivors seek treatment, and others go back to using, Jerz said.

The sheriff’s office is looking at other

ways to slow or stop the epidemic.

A trailer that was once used to transport sheriff’s office motorcycles is being transformed into an “In Plain Sight” trailer. Donations helped convert it into a bedroom designed to show parents and guardians where kids might hide drugs.

Kelley hopes to have it ready to use sometime in May for different events, in an effort to raise awareness. Grundy County uses a similar concept.

“In the last couple years, we’ve been hitting this epidemic as hard as we possibly can,” Kelley said.

Kelley said over the past couple years two officers have been assigned to a few different drug task forces. Two kilograms of heroin were seized in a traffic stop in Frankfort last week, Kelley said.

Village project looks to enhance southwest trails

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village officials are getting behind a trail extension project that would connect the Springbank neighborhood to the downtown and riverfront area.

The project would extend the existing DuPage River Trail across a recently constructed pedestrian bridge over the DuPage River and south through the riverfront property on the west side of the DuPage River to the southwest part of the village.

“It would really provide a regional conduit for pedestrian trail connectivity serving additional existing subdivisions such as Creekside as well as future development,” Director of Planning Jonathan Proulx said in a video of the meeting posted on the village website.

The path would have to be constructed with an easement granted by the village to the Plainfield Park District, which would manage the trail. The path would go under the Canadian National Railway to connect to trail segments in Mather Woods, and there would be

a crossing at the Renwick Road bridge.

Developers of Springbank would construct the trail as part of the subdivision, and the village would be best positioned to seek permitting for the project, Proulx said.

“This is a really important project for us,” said Trustee Margie Bonuchi, who also serves on the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation board, in the video.

“We are developing the riverfront property. This is really going to be a boon for the riverfront development and people in the southern part of town, into the unincorporated areas, to find their way into the riverfront and downtown Plainfield.”

Proulx said construction could start as soon as later this year if everything works out. A representative from the development firm estimated the trail project to cost $1.6 million to $1.7 million.

Trustee Tom Ruane asked that lighting of the path be taken into consideration. He said some places, such as a tunnel, are isolated.

Trustee Bill Lamb said it would be great to close gaps in the village’s trail system.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Wilmington man pleaded guilty Tuesday to a driving under the influence charge in connection with a 2015 motorcycle crash that killed his twin brother.

Casey E. Grskovic, 21, pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count and was sentenced to a year of court super- Casey E. vision. Felony driving Grskovic

under the influence charges were dismissed in exchange for the blind plea.

Grskovic will have a driving under the influence conviction on his record if he does not follow the court’s orders.

About 11:30 p.m. Sept. 25, 2015, Casey and Ross Grskovic were riding in the 23600 block of West Widows Road near Wilmington when their motorcycles collided, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Koch said.

Neither Casey Grskovic’s blue Yamaha dirt bike or Ross Grskovic’s red Honda dirt bike had headlights.

Both of them had consumed alcohol and they were with two friends who were riding on a Harley Davidson motorcycle that did have headlights and had been illuminating the roadway, defense attorney George Lenard said.

Casey Grskovic told Will County sheriff’s deputies that night that he couldn’t recall the crash, but said he’d “been drinking like an idiot,” Koch said. Sheriff’s police estimate Casey Grskovic’s dirt bike was traveling between 53 and 73 mph when it struck the other. The speed limit on Widows Road in 55 mph.

Casey Grskovic has no prior criminal record. He is employed with a construction company and attends Joliet Junior College. He and his brother shared roles in movies and TV shows when they were toddlers.

“They were very close,” Lenard said. “Every time I’ve tried to talk with him about this case he tears up.”

Casey Grskovic cried throughout Tuesday’s hearing and declined to address Judge Dave Carlson before his sentence was imposed. His mother was also crying as she hugged him once court proceedings finished.

NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 officials are warning of an email phishing scam that has resurfaced throughout the district, which covers New Lenox, Frankfort, Mokena, Manhattan and parts of Tinley Park.

People claiming to work for a custom T-shirt and spirit wear company called TD Sports have sent emails to local businesses, stating they have

sponsorship opportunities available through T-shirt and product sales, according to a district news release.

Those people have no association with District 210 or TD Sports, based in North Carolina, the news release stated.

Anyone in the Lincoln-Way area who has given money to people claiming to be associated with TD Sports should file a report with his or her local police department.

New Lenox passes balanced budget Summer concert series bands announced; gun shop ordinance amended

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Village Board has approved a budget with a more than $2 million surplus for fiscal year 2018, which starts May 1.

The new budget shows about $40.89 million in revenue and about $38.6 million in expenditures for its operating budget. Last year, the village approved a budget with a $2 million surplus with $43 million and $41.21 million in revenue and expenditures, respectively.

The village also will hold more than its 25 percent goal for operating reserves, which will be at $7 million and about 30 percent in the fiscal year, said Finance Director Kim Auchstetter during a public hearing at the board’s regular meeting Monday night.

Included in the budget is about $1.49 million in road maintenance and about $420,000 for the design of

the proposed Metra station, which is carried over from the 2016-17 budget, Auchstetter said after the meeting.

Also included is the construction for the wastewater treatment plant No. 2 expansion, which will be covered by a $19 million loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. A contract for that project has yet to be awarded by the village, she said.

For its general fund, the village has budgeted about $23 million in both revenue and expenditures.

The village’s personnel expenses make up about 65 percent of the village’s general fund. A new patrol officer to be hired this year also is included in the budget, Auchstetter said.

The salary for the new officer has not been determined, Auchstetter stated in an email after the meeting.

However, the current entry level salary is $55,531.55, she said.

Mayor Tim Baldermann on Monday unveiled the dates and bands for the popular summer concert series exclusive to New Lenox residents, which has added a night this year.

Richard Marx, with special guest The Tubes, will kick off the series June 17 at the Village Commons. BoDeans, with special guest The Smithereens, will play July 22, and Collective Soul will play Aug. 5. Barenaked Ladies with an opening band that will be announced later will end the series Sept. 2.

Tickets will go on sale at 7 a.m.

Amended gun shop ordinance

An ordinance regarding zoning for gun shops and ranges that was tabled at the board’s last meeting after residents complained to the board about the removal of a separation provision was brought back for discussion Monday.

The ordinance has been amended with the inclusion of the provision requiring that prospective gun shops and ranges be 500 feet away from residential areas, schools, day care facilities, churches and parks.

Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis presented the amended ordinance and also informed the board that a party interested in building a gun range will not be affected by the limitations of the provision.

No residents spoke at Monday’s meeting. The proposed ordinance will come to the board for final approval at its April 24 meeting.

LOCAL BRIEF Police: Joliet man seriously injured child in beating

JOLIET – A Joliet man faces charges after allegedly beating up a child four months ago.

Kardan D. Mitchell, 23, was charged last week with three counts of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated domestic battery.

According to Will County court records, between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, Mitchell “struck a minor (younger than age 13)

about his body causing liver and pancreatic injury.”

Mitchell, of the 18000 block of Asbury Circle, was not in custody as of Tuesday afternoon. According Kardan D. to jail records, Mitchell Mitchell was arrested in June by Joliet police on charges of domestic battery, theft and obstructing justice.

JOLIET – A homeless man allegedly forced a woman into a vacant house and tried to sexually assault her Monday in Joliet.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said police learned about the incident at 1 a.m. Tuesday when the 31-year-old woman called from a gas Joseph station on Cass Street.

“About 6 p.m. Mon- McCloud day she’d been at Clay [Street] and Youngs [Avenue] when a man she knew as ‘Joseph’ grabbed her and forced her inside a vacant house, where he held her against her will,” Gregory said.

“While inside the residence, he choked her, struck her numerous times and sexually groped her while attempting

to remove her clothing.”

The woman told officers the man struck her again when she tried to get away, but she was eventually able to break free and ran to the gas station.

The victim was bruised but otherwise unharmed.

Gregory said the victim took the officers to a house in the 500 block of Clay Street. The door was unlocked and the house was “red tagged” as unfit for occupancy, he said.

“Inside, officers found Joseph McCloud, 26, with scratches to his face and neck,” Gregory said.

McCloud was taken into custody, but refused to speak with police, Gregory said. He was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, unlawful restraint, criminal sexual abuse and criminal trespassing.

McCloud had a previous address in Plainfield, but is believed to be homeless, according to police records.

“This is something I’m passionate about,” O’Hara said. “Kids learning

“In addition to everything they are going to learn about gardening,” Kavich said, “I think they will also get a better appreciation for our environment and all of the aspects of growing your own food naturally.”

Three Rivers sixth-grade teacher Nicole Gubbins and fifth-grade teacher Kathy Hibler will start the gardening project with their students in late March, planting the seeds in pots inside the school. They will learn what vegetables grow well in our area, what kind of potting soil they like, how much sunshine and water it takes to grow the seedlings and even a little about nutrition and why eating fresh vegetables is good for them.

At the end of the school year, the students will hand their little plants over to Jackie O’Hara, program coordinator at the park district.

The plants will be transplanted into raised garden beds just outside the swimming pool’s fence. O’Hara wasn’t sure of the exact site.

Then the park district’s summer day camp students will try their hand at growing the greens. The camps involve students from kindergarten up through high school. They will be able to spend the summer watering and weeding the garden and harvesting the vegetables when they are ready.

Some of the Three Rivers students who will be involved in the project, along with other Channahon children, met recently at the park district to talk about gardening.

Katelyn Bucciarelli said she’s grown flowers and vegetables at her grandmother’s house and enjoys doing it. She said she enjoys eating tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini.

“I like the pretty flowers and the tasty vegetables,” she said.

Maggie Kapple said her family has a flower garden, and they used to raise vegetables. She likes tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers and zucchini.

“I helped weed them and made sure they got watered,” Kapple said of her family’s garden.

Gubbins, a gardener herself, said there are many lessons her students will be able to learn from the project.

“Anytime you can teach them the connection between what’s in the refrigerator and the store and where it comes from,” she said. “I think sometimes we forget that.”

The program is part of a three-year Will County Partners for Healthy Gardening grant.

“You’ve got a store on the East Side,” Pete Toth said, reflecting on what he would think when hearing the complaint. “Support the store that you have.”

Usually what was meant was that there was no chain supermarket on the East Side. They all left or closed years ago. Despite city efforts, none have come back.

Pete, who grew up in the neighborhood near the store, remembers when the East Side was loaded with big-name and small-name supermarkets of another era: A&P, National Tea, Rudy’s and Wally’s.

“That was in the 1970s,” he said.

Jewel-Osco had a store across Jackson Street from the Certified store. Certified occupies a building previously used by Kroger.

Now that Certified Warehouse Foods is closing, too, city officials talk about the need to fill the void and concerns about a “food desert” on the East Side.

“Now, unfortunately, that’s going to be true,” store owner Ken Clymer said.

“My position before was there is no food desert because we’re here.”

Family grocer

Many Certified customers walk to the store – some because it’s close and others because they have no car.

Larry Thompson, who lives nearby, said now he likely will drive to WalMart – either the one on the West Side or the one in Lockport – for groceries.

“It’s bad,” Thompson said of Certified’s closing. “You have to go a long way now.”

But Darline Kotalik of Shorewood would drive past other supermarkets to get to Certified.

“They had real good meat sales here all the time, and their meat was fresh,” Kotalik said. “I’m sorry to see them go.”

Kotalik was not the only out-of-towner who drove to Certified.

Many of them came for the meat, Clymer said.

“I had six butchers, and their expe-

rience between them was almost 200 years,” he said.

Meat wasn’t the only appeal of the stores, although they had no deli and lacked some of the other attractions of a modern store. One refrigerator case at the Jackson Street store was a holdover from the Kroger store.

Competition has been “grinding away” at the business, Clymer said, since the first Wal-Mart Supercenter opened in Joliet, although it is on the other side of town. East Side dollar stores, which sell groceries including milk and eggs, also have cut into business.

“Everyone’s selling groceries,” Clymer said.

It wasn’t enough to keep the store going, but one thing Certified had was people.

Pete Toth has been with the business since it started. Sherryl Pinson and Bettye Procope were original employees at the Richards Street store, which opened in 1984.

So was Ronda Eubanks, the only head cashier the Richards Street store ever had, and someone so familiar that customers, if they did not know her name, would call her “that girl who always is there,” Clymer said.

Clymer, too, choked up at times as he talked about the store and how badly he feels about closing.

“I almost cry when I read some of the emails,” he said, sharing one he received from a customer in Braidwood.

“It is with tears streaming down my face that I feel compelled to write you,” the email begins. It goes on to say, “I will miss that family atmosphere that clearly doesn’t exist within the big box stores. I like the personal touch I received from your family of employees and, yet again, another neighborhood icon is gone.”

Clymer, who himself met his wife in a Streamwood grocery store where they both worked, may be one of the last of the independent family grocers. His store might be one of the last of its kind.

The business, he said, always was about people.

“The employees and the customers,” he said, “they’re what kept it going.”

QUICK NEWS Joliet City Hall to close for Good Friday

JOLIET – In observance of the Good Friday holiday, Joliet City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St., will be closed Friday, according to a city news release.

The parking decks will be free of charge that day and there will be no enforcement of the parking meters.

Heroin summit to tackle opioid overdose crisis

ROMEOVILLE – The upcoming 2017 HERO-HELPS Southwest Coalition Community Summit will focus on the Illinois Prescription Opioid Overdose Prevention Grant and the strategies Will, DuPage, Lake and Cook counties are implementing to prevent prescription opioid abuse, according to a news release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The summit is scheduled for 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 21 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center, 55 Phelps Ave., Romeoville.

The abuse of prescription opioids, heroin or fentanyl claimed at least 1,000 lives in northeastern Illinois last year. The final tallies are expected to rise as local coroners and medical examiners continue compiling 2016 statistics.

Romeoville participates in Pinwheels for Prevention effort

ROMEOVILLE – The village of Romeoville is joining thousands of other communities, organizations and individuals across the nation who are engaging in activities to raise awareness and promote the prevention of child abuse, according to a village news release.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Beginning in April, the village will support the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign by displaying pinwheels on the Village Hall and police department front lawn at 1050 W. Romeo Road. The Village Hall and police department will have a limited number of pinwheels for residents who make a donation, which can then be added to those on display.

Senior Services of Will County to open Romeoville satellite office

ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville officials recently announced that the Senior Services Center of Will County will operate a satellite office within the Romeoville Village Hall, 1050 W. Romeo Road, to provide better access for Romeoville residents, according to a village news release.

Services center staff are expected to start operations May 1 in Romeoville. Senior Services of Will County, which runs the center, is a nonprofit that provides a variety of programs and services to enhance quality of life for seniors, increase their safety and security, lessen loneliness and isolation, promote healthy aging, and allow people to remain in their own homes as long as possible. JOLIET – The city of Joliet, in partnership with the Will County Center for Community Concerns, is offering a down payment assistance program for eligible home buyers, according to a city news release.

The program covers the down payment in a deferred zero percent interest loan for eligible buyers. The property being acquired must be located within Joliet city limits and occupied by the home buyer as his or her principal residence.

The down payment assistance is provided in the form of a zero interest, deferred payment loan secured by a second mortgage, note and recapture agreement.

The program covers the down payment and closing costs. The dollar amount is based on financial need.

Buyers may qualify for up to $52,250.

Minimum down payment assistance is $1,000. Maximum assistance is based on a ceiling of 25 percent of the purchase price of the home. Home buyers must provide a minimum of $2,500 from his or her own funds for the purchase of the home.

The Associated Press MADRID – Carme Chacon, Spain’s first female defense minister and a prominent socialist party leader, has died. She was 46.

The party said in a statement that Chacon died Sunday from a heart condition she had had since birth.

Chacon helped modernize Spain’s armed forces when she took the helm of the Ministry of Defense in 2008, in the government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Spain’s socialist party, or PSOE, said in a statement that Chacon had always been “at the vanguard” of the party.

“Despite her youth,” the statement said, Chacon had a “passion to defend the socialist ideals and, with time, she became a very important figure in our party.”

Before taking charge of the Defense Ministry, she had previously been minister of housing and a national lawmaker.

When Zapatero stepped down in 2011, she ran for PSOE’s top leadership, although she eventually lost the vote to former Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba.

Between 2012 and 2016, she had been in charge of the party’s international relations, before she left politics to join a law firm in Madrid.

Chacon’s body was found by police in her home Sunday after relatives called emergency services when they couldn’t reach her. She was married and had a young son.

Patricia McKissack, noted author of children’s books, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS – Patricia C. McKissack, a prolific author of children’s books on African-American history, folklore and stories, has died. She was 72.

McKissack, of the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield, Missouri, collapsed Friday at a restaurant where she was having dinner with the eldest of her three sons, Fredrick McKissack Jr. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported she was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead of cardio-respiratory arrest.

McKissack and her husband, Fredrick McKissack, published more than 100 books. Fredrick McKissack Jr. said his parents shared a “missionary zeal” to write about African-American characters “where there hadn’t been any before.”

Patricia McKissack was born Aug. 9, 1944, in Smyrna, Tennessee.

She taught English and became a children’s book editor at Concordia Publishing before turning to writing, along with her husband, a civil engineer.

After he died in 2013, she told the Post-Dispatch that although her name was the only one on most of the fiction titles, they shared in the work.

“We were a team,” she said.

Funeral arrangements are pending. In addition to her three sons, McKissack is survived by a brother and a sister.

Rauner on campaign-style tour of state

The schedule was announced from a Citizens for Rauner-affiliated email account. And moments after the first event started, supporters received a fundraising email from “Team Rauner Volunteer HQ” – another account affiliated with Citizens for Rauner – asking them to donate money “to directly help our grass-roots team as we

prep for this trip.”

Several of his potential Democratic rivals said Tuesday the two-day trip was the latest example of Rauner’s misguided priorities. They argue that his focus on keeping or gaining power has prevented lawmakers from reaching a deal on a state budget for nearly two years, leading to serious cuts to higher education, social services and other programs.

“Bruce Rauner is once again choosing to put politics over doing his job as governor,” Pritzker said in an email.

Pawar noted the events were occurring the same day he joined protesters at Northeastern Illinois University to rally against billions of dollars in cuts to colleges and to tuition grants for students.

“It’s past time for Gov. Rauner to put politics aside and govern,” he said. “Our state can’t afford to wait any longer.”

Rauner said the roadblock to changes he’s seeking, such as term limits for lawmakers and a property tax freeze, has been House Speaker Michael Madigan and other Democrats. During Tuesday’s stops and in TV ads that an arm of the Republican Governors Association began airing last month, he’s criticized Democrats who control the General Assembly for trying to “duct tape over” Illinois’ problems and said he’s the person trying to truly fix Illinois.

CHICAGO – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner launched a two-day tour paid for by his campaign fund Tuesday, insisting the statewide fly around “has nothing to do with the election” even as Democrats line up to unseat him in 2018 and his approval ratings sag.

The first-term governor started the day touring a Bloomingdale factory, where he told employees “we’re working for you every day to try to help you have a better life.” He then flew to Rockford and several other stops before an evening rally in Springfield. He also has five scheduled events Wednesday in southern Illinois, Quincy and Champaign.

The tour comes as Rauner’s Democratic rivals already have been stumping across Illinois, blasting him as a failure and as more interested in politicking than governing. Among the candidates are billionaire J.B. Pritzker, businessman Chris Kennedy, state Sen. Daniel Biss and Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar.

Rauner, who put $50 million into his campaign fund in December, said Tuesday he wanted media to cover the events as “communication with the people of Illinois.” He also refused to say he’s seek-

LINCOLNWOOD – Officials said a member of Northwestern University’s crew team has been found dead after falling overboard while practicing in Lincolnwood.

The school said in a statement authorities recovered the body of 19-year-old Mohammed Ramzan on Monday from the North Shore Channel in Lincolnwood.

Officials said a coach in a separate boat and a fellow team member went into the water in an unsuccessful rescue attempt.

The school said he was a freshman from Auburn, Washington. An autopsy is planned.

Catholic Charities of Chicago marks 100 years

CHICAGO – Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has turned 100.

The largest Catholic Charities outpost in the country celebrated a century of service Monday. The organization said it helps nearly 1 million people in Cook and Lake counties each year.

The agency began April 10, 1917. Cardinal Mundelein called together a group of prominent businessmen to raise money for the church.

It was only days after America’s entry into World War I. Women were left caring for families. And a burgeoning flu pandemic would orphan thousands.

The organization has expanded to 150 locations across the archdiocese.

Man gets 6 years in prison for fondling women’s feet

WHEATON – An Illinois man has received a six-year prison sentence for fondling women’s feet last year at two public libraries.

Omar Carlton of Aurora pleaded guilty in October to two counts of aggravated battery in a public place in connection with touching the feet of the women in separate incidents. He was sentenced Monday.

DuPage County prosecutors said in April 2016, a woman was working at a cubicle at the Warrenville Public Library when she felt something brush up against her feet several times.

She reported the incident. An investigation by Warrenville police identified the 45-year-old Carlton as a suspect.

Carlton was arrested in May and was out on bond when he was charged in a similar incident at the North Central College library in Naperville.

He was in custody until his guilty plea.

Motorcyclists urged to take steps to improve safety

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois officials are urging motorcyclists to brush up on their skills and use proper equipment as they take to the roadways.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police said more motorcycles will be on the road as the weather improves. They’re launching a joint safety campaign aimed at reducing crashes and deaths.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said although motorcycles are only on the roads for part of each year, they account for nearly 14 percent of all traffic fatalities.

He said riders should do pre-ride safety inspections and wear high-visibility clothing and a U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmet.

Illinois also offers a free Cycle Rider Safety Training Program to licensed residents.

MOSCOW – The Trump administration veered toward deeper conflict with Russia on Tuesday as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrived in Moscow, gambling that an unpredictable new president armed with the willingness to threaten military action gives the U.S. much-needed leverage to end Syria’s carnage.

Yet there were no guarantees Tillerson’s arguments would prove any more successful than the Obama administration’s failed effort to peel Russia away from its Syrian ally. Tillerson’s mission, coming days after 59 Tomahawk missiles struck a Syrian air base, also carries serious risks: If Russia brushes off the warnings, President Donald Trump could be forced into another show of force in Syria or see his credibility wane.

“I hope that what the Russian government concludes is that they have aligned themselves with an unreliable partner in Bashar al-Assad,” Tillerson said before flying to the Russian capital, referring to Syria’s embattled leader.

“The reign of the Assad family is coming to an end,” he confidently predicted.

But Tillerson’s claim is one President Barack Obama, too, argued for years, only to see Assad outlast his own term in office. And the Trump administration’s nascent Syria policy seems to be increasingly centering on the same tactic Obama unsuccessfully employed: persuading Russia, Assad’s staunchest ally, to abandon him.

Calling for a U.N. investigation, Putin held to his claim that it was actually Assad opponents who introduced chemical weapons into Syria’s harrowing civil war.

“We have seen it all already,” Putin said. Jabbing at U.S. credibility, the Russian leader reminded reporters about unfounded U.S. claims of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, used to justify America’s 2003 invasion.

The escalating dispute over last week’s events in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun has thrust Washington and Moscow into a level of tension rarely seen since the end of the Cold War. The animosity is especially striking given widespread speculation that Trump, who lavishly praised Putin during his campaign, would pursue rapprochement with Moscow.

Even on Syria, the positions appeared to be hardening. Only a week ago, top Trump officials had spoken off deprioritizing past U.S. efforts to remove Assad from office and accepting the “reality” that 18 months of Russian military intervention had secured him in power.

Since last Thursday’s cruise missile strike, Tillerson and

other U.S. officials appear to have reverted to the past administration’s rhetoric of insisting that Assad is on the way out, without outlining any strategy for making that happen.

The Trump administration’s change of heart, apparently spurred in part by the president’s emotional response to the images of chemical weapons victims, also is serving another purpose: defanging the perception of coziness between Trump and Moscow. As the FBI and multiple congressional committees investigate potential collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign, the president can point to his hard-line stance on Assad as fresh evidence he’s willing to stand up to Putin.

Asked about Putin possibly skipping a meeting with Tillerson, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said, “There is a bit of irony that for all of these talks that have been perpetuated about back channels and direct links, that now it’s they won’t meet with you.” At a minimum, Tillerson will meet Wednesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and the two are expected to take questions from reporters.

United Airlines CEO issues apology Details emerge about passenger who was removed from flight

The Associated Press CHICAGO – After people were horrified by video of a passenger getting dragged off a full United Express flight by airport police, the head of United’s parent company said the airline was reaching out to the man to “resolve this situation.”

Hours later on Monday, his tone turned more defensive. He described the man as “disruptive and belligerent.”

By Tuesday afternoon, almost two days after the Sunday evening confrontation in Chicago, CEO Oscar Munoz issued his most contrite apology yet as details emerged about the man seen on cellphone videos recorded by other passengers at O’Hare Airport.

“No one should ever be mistreated this way,” Munoz said.

The passenger was identified as phy-

sician David Dao, 69, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, who was convicted more than a decade ago of felony charges involving his prescribing of drugs and spent years trying to regain his medical license.

But while Dao’s history quickly became a focus of attention, there’s no indication that his past influenced how he was treated or that the Oscar Munoz airline or police were aware of his background. And it’s unlikely that officials would have known anything about him other than basic information such as his name and address, if that.

Screaming can be heard on the videos, but nowhere is Dao seen attacking the officers. In fact, he appears relatively passive both when he was dragged down the aisle of the jet and when he is seen standing in the aisle later saying quietly, “I want to go home, I want to go home.”

Munoz’s latest statement described the removal as “truly horrific.” He said the company would review policies for seeking volunteers to give up their seats, for handling oversold situations

and for partnering with airport authorities and local law enforcement.

An attorney who represents Dao said his client was being treated at a Chicago hospital for injuries he suffered in the incident and that the family would not comment.

According to records from the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, Dao went to medical school at the University of Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, graduating in 1974. He was licensed in Kentucky with a specialty in pulmonary disease.

His legal troubles started in 2003, when his medical license was suspended after an undercover sting operation at a Louisville motel for allegedly writing fraudulent prescriptions.

According to the documents, the licensing board had learned that Dao had become sexually interested in a patient and hired the patient as his office manager. That man later said he quit his job because Dao “pursued him aggressively” and arranged to provide him with prescription drugs in exchange for sex.

Dao was ultimately convicted in late 2004 of several counts of obtaining drugs by fraud or deceit and was placed on

five years of supervised probation and surrendered his medical license.

His longtime effort to get his license back finally succeeded in 2015, when the licensing board allowed him to practice medicine again.

Airport officials have said little about Sunday’s events and nothing about Dao’s behavior before he was pulled from the jet that was bound for Louisville, Kentucky. Likewise, the Chicago Aviation Department has said only that one of its employees who removed Dao did not follow proper procedures and has been placed on leave.

No passengers on the plane have mentioned that Dao did anything but refuse to leave the plane when he was ordered to do so.

Also Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the altercation “completely unacceptable” and praised Aviation Commissioner Ginger Evans for taking “swift action.” He promised that a city investigation would “ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”

The event stemmed from a common air travel issue – a full flight. United was trying to make room for four employees of a partner airline, meaning four people had to get off.

Veteran kills wife at school after failing to win her back

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The man who opened fire in a San Bernardino school was a deeply religious Navy veteran who accused his newlywed wife of infidelity.

They had separated, and when he failed to win her back, he went to her special-education classroom and fatally shot her and one of the children she taught before turning the gun on himself, police said Tuesday.

In the weeks before Monday’s violence, Karen Smith told family members her new husband, Cedric Anderson, had tried to get her to return home and threatened her, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. She didn’t take him seriously and thought he was just seeking attention, he said.

Police do not know what triggered the attack or why Anderson chose to shoot Smith at the school, Burguan said, adding that she never shared any information about her marital problems with colleagues.

Killed was Jonathan Martinez, 8, who had a rare genetic condition known

as Williams syndrome and had survived heart surgery. A 9-year-old boy also was shot but was in stable condition and in good spirits, police said.

Anderson and Smith had married in late January but separated in midMarch after Anderson accused her of infidelity, leading Smith to move out, Burguan said.

Just weeks before the shooting, Anderson had professed his love to Smith in a series of social media posts, including one that called her an “angel.”

Smith’s mother, Irma Sykes, said her daughter had been friends with Anderson for about four years before they got married.

“She thought she had a wonderful husband, but she found out he was not wonderful at all,” Sykes told the Los Angeles Times.

Anderson, a self-proclaimed pastor whose Facebook profile is filled with Bible quotes and religious references, had been unemployed but previously held jobs as a maintenance worker, police said. He had joined the Navy in 1982 and re-enlisted as a reservist from 1987 until 2003, working as a builder, according to military records.

Anderson had been arrested four times since 1982, though none resulted in convictions, Burguan said.

Gauger a reminder of death penalty’s demise in Illinois SPRINGFIELD – “These VIEWS are halls of justice – not mercy,” the prosecutor bellowed Scott before the jury as I wiggled Reeder uncomfortably in the back of the courtroom, notebook in hand I was fresh out of college and covering courts in Texas when I first wrestled with the notion of justice vs. mercy.

Justice is when society gives someone a punishment it thinks a defendant deserves. Mercy, on the other hand, is when it extends a hand of compassion.

We are all for compassion when it is we who are standing before the judgement seat. But we aren’t so much for it when it is someone who has wronged us.

I just finished reading “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson.

He’s a Harvard-educated lawyer who has devoted his life to representing those sentenced to death.

He famously was able to prove one of his clients was factually innocent and have the conviction thrown out.

Sometimes, our society makes mistakes.

And the death penalty is something that makes me uneasy.

It has since I met a man named Gary Gauger. He was wrongly convicted of murdering his parents in rural McHenry County. He served two years on Illinois’ death row before his conviction was thrown out.

I met Gauger back in 1990 when he dropped by my office, which was then in the Illinois statehouse. He told his tale of wrongful conviction and left me speechless.

I’m libertarian in my philosophy, which means I support limited government. And, let’s face it, there is no greater intrusion of government than when it chooses to kill one of its citizens.

And after 30 years of covering government, I’ve come to the conclusion that it does very little very well.

Even when it comes to the death penalty, in recent decades, Illinois managed to sentence 13 men to die who were factually innocent.

For this reason, I’m glad Illinois no longer has capital punishment.

While Gov. Pat Quinn signed the legislation outlawing the death penalty, it is really Gov. George Ryan who deserves the credit. During his four years in office, he moved from being a supporter of the death penalty to being the nation’s most vocal opponent of capital punishment. He is the man who emptied Illinois’ death row.

I used to say, “I support the death penalty because some people don’t deserve to live.”

And, no, I haven’t become naïve. I know there are still bad people among us who should be banished to be forever away from society.

But what does society gain by killing? Retribution?

Well, perhaps it’s time to temper our justice with a bit of mercy.

Schools should release immunization rates It’s troubling enough that Texas still allows parents to opt out of vaccinating their school-age children with alarming ease.

Almost as stunning is how hard it is for parents to get information on the number of kids claiming exemptions at individual schools, so they can make smart decisions about their risk of exposure.

The way Texas releases records – at the district level instead of the school level – keeps most parents in the dark until it’s too late. Parents have to file tedious and time-consuming open records requests to get school rates.

Meanwhile, clusters of unvaccinated children can form at a school without being reflected in the data or released to the public.

This is leading to the emergence of childhood diseases that had all but disappeared because of advances in medi-

cine and kids on vaccination schedules. In December, a mumps outbreak in Johnson County infected almost 30 people. Dallas County had a mumps outbreak last month, with nearly 60 cases.

That does no one any good.

And it’s a danger to the health of all of us.

We applaud two bills – SB 1010 from Amarillo Republican Kel Seliger, and HB 2249 from J.D. Sheffield, R-Gatesville – that aim to fix this and require the government to release school immunization rates.

Consider that nearly 45,000 Texas students in grades K-12 claimed nonmedical exemptions in 2016. That’s a 1,700 percent increase from 2004.

Stunningly, parents can opt out with little more than a name, age and an address.

This has been allowed since vaccination skeptics got Texas law changed in 2003 to

allow exemptions for philosophical reasons. Fearful and misinformed parents continue to cite discredited research linking vaccines to autism.

It’s mindboggling that Texas allows this to continue.

A bill by Dallas Rep. Jason Villalba to curb these exemptions for non-medical reasons died during the last session.

At the very least, lawmakers should now make sure parents are armed with exemption rates at their schools.

“Parents have a right not to get their kids vaccinated, but the kids don’t have an individual right to expose other kids whose parents don’t want to assume that level of risk,” Seliger told The Dallas Morning News.

He’s right.

This information should be as easy to get as STAAR or SAT scores, and it could save kids’ lives.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Grashoff’s first-inning home run helps Wills, JCA beat Minooka

In Minooka’s 5-1 victory over Joliet Catholic Academy in the fifth-place game of the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Tournament a week and a half ago at Slammers Stadium, Laczynski led off the game with a home run.

Grashoff decided turnabout was fair play. Hitting cleanup in JCA coach Jared Voss’ lineup, Grashoff lofted the Hilltoppers’ first home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday, and the combination of right-hander Brendon Wills and lefty Antonio Saldana made it stand up for a 3-2 nonconference victory.

“Thank God we got them this time,” Grashoff said. “It’s always a rivalry when we play them. I play summer ball with Hayden, and he hit the homer in the WJOL and I hit one here. Just a little bit of payback.

“Hayden is a good player. He’s got that swagger with everything he does on the field.”

Grashoff took an outside pitch from Minooka starter Seth Gutknecht over the fence in right-center field, the direction where the strong wind could give a fly ball a boost.

“This guy got us going,” Wills said, nodding toward Grashoff.

“I told our coaches, I think that’s our first three-run homer in the first inning since Joe Benson graduated [in 2006],” Voss said.

“It helped a lot that I hit an outside pitch,” Grashoff said. “I knew it was

The homer came after the first two hitters for the Hilltoppers (5-7-1) reached on errors. Minooka (7-3) committed three errors in all, JCA five. Yet

both sides made clutch defensive plays that helped Wills and Gutknecht take their duel into the late innings.

Other than Grashoff’s homer, the Hilltoppers, who entered the game hitting .221 as a team, had one hit, Justin

Conant’s bunt single in the fifth inning.

Minooka’s only hits were Laczynski’s infield single in the first and Jackson Shepherd’s single to left in the third.

“We got the big hit from Gras [Grashoff], and we did a good job getting some bunts down and trying to put pressure on them,” Voss said.

“Brendon [Wills] pitched very well and Antonio [Saldana] came in throwing strikes [in a perfect seventh inning]. He’s from the Minooka/Channahon area, and that probably gave him a little more [incentive].

“Minooka’s a good team, and even with us up, they were stealing. We threw one guy out, but they keep coming at you.”

Minooka’s first two batters reached in the bottom of the first, and the Indians scored once on a throwing error.

Wills, however, escaped further damage. Minooka’s only other run came with the help of two errors in the fifth.

“He was unbelievable,” JCA catcher Jack Surin said of Wills. “He found his curveball and was throwing his fastball for strikes. We obviously have to find our offense yet, but our pitching has been very good.”

Then there’s the secret award – the fan or fans of the year – that will not be revealed until the night of the banquet. Marcum, who meant so much to this event and to so many other community events, died this past Nov. 1, and he received the inaugural fan award last year.

“We’re sticking to what Glen [Marcum] and Chris [Olson] have done,” Rande said. “The concept of it will be pretty much the same, and we have a good group of honorees. Glen and Chris left a list of teams and individuals they were considering honoring in the future, and that helped get us started.”

The 1994-95 Steelmen basketball team went 29-4 and completed a twoyear run under coach Mike O’Connell, where they built a 59-5 record. All five losses were to teams that would go on to finish no lower than third in their respective state tournaments.

The final two losses in 199495 came on the final day at state.

Wills credited the JCA defense with getting the job done behind him when needed most.

“The guys did a great job when they had to, especially [shortstop Jared] Cushing,” he said.

It all contributed to turning the game into a thriller.

“It’s always exciting when we play these guys,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “It’s a good rivalry. There was some sloppy defensive plays on both sides. We set up their threerun homer in the first, and they gave what we got.

“We got good pitching from Gutknecht and [Simon] Herold, and their kid [Wills] pitched well. He was throwing down and away, and we didn’t make adjustments. We struck out too much (nine times total). We did not play well.

That’s a weird thing about high school baseball. Some days you just don’t look like yourself.”

Michael Mines’ last-second 3-point attempt that would have sent the Steelmen to the title game bounced across the rim and fell off as eventual champion Peoria Manual escaped, 62-60. Then Mines, in the third-place game, set what was then a record for 3-pointers in a Class AA game at state when he hit 7 of 12 from beyond the arc. However, Rock Island claimed third place, 69-59.

All-stater Gary Bell was an all-tournament selection. Joel House (who like Bell finished in the top five in scoring in the state tournament), Rory O’Connell, Oku Satcher, Chip Bates, Dwayne Edmon, John Ford, Eric Patnoudes, Erik Walton, Paul Forsythe, Blowery Moody, Eric Breuer, Paul Purcell and Adrice Edwards rounded out the roster.

Chaplin’s wrestling accomplishments, meanwhile, included a 122-10 career record, second place in state at 132 pounds as a junior in 1987 and third place at 138 as a senior, after which he went on to wrestle at Michigan State. He was an underclassman on the Central team that won the state in 1985 and was the runner-up in 1986.

Shaw, also a member of the 1985 and 1986 Central wrestling teams, has followed in his parents’ footsteps

as his mom and dad taught at Central. He has been heavily involved in the construction projects that have occurred in and around the school in recent years.

Gillman has been coaching Joliet Township tennis for 24 years. His resume includes a couple of team sectional titles and several runner-up finishes.

Suca graduated in 1999 from the softball team that would go on to win state in 2000. She also played volleyball and basketball in high school.

She had an excellent softball career at Indiana and has coached in other Joliet Township girls sports programs besides softball, such as volleyball, basketball and golf.

It will be different in an important sense, but hopefully similarly successful.

For the past 12 years, Joliet Township district director Chris Olson and Joliet Township Athletic Booster Club President Glen Marcum served as co-chairmen of the Joliet Township Night of Champions banquet. They announced at the event last April that they were stepping down. It was in someone else’s hands.

That someone is the banquet committee headed by booster club President Brian Rande.

The banquet is scheduled for April 20 at the IBEW 176 Hall, 1100 NE Frontage Road. The social hour begins at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the awards at 7:30 p.m. A cash bar reception and raffles will follow.

Lincoln-Way Central edges Lincoln-Way East

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – When you pit two good teams from the same school district in a match that has conference and sectional implications, it’s not uncommon to see a fiercely contested battle where neither squad wants to lose.

Tuesday’s SouthWest Suburban Conference girls water polo match between Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East took on a slightly different look considering the restructuring of the district, as well as players’ longtime association in club competition.

With one side featuring several players who were in a program that went to state last season but no longer exists, and their opponent having some players who were on the other side a year ago, a showdown of two of the favorites for the upcoming Lincoln-Way Central Sectional definitely lived up to its billing.

The Griffins overcame an early 4-1 deficit to take a 6-4 lead in the third period before the Knights rallied by scoring five of the last six goals to capture a 9-7 victory. The contest featured opposing

head coaches who worked alongside each other a year ago.

Nicole McCabe, one of two Knights who played on East’s 2014 state team, scored five goals, including three in the final 9:02, to help her team win its ninth in a row. Central (11-2, 8-0) meets East (12-4, 7-2) again May 5, just before the start of the sectional.

“The girls all know each other and they play together in the offseason, so we knew that it was going to be a competitive game,” said Knights coach Pam Dettman, who served as an assistant to current East coach Kendra Will last year at Lincoln-Way North, when they led that program to its first state appearance in the sport.

“The best thing that I like about my team is that there’s no one girl. They can all shoot and get steals and they all assist and can draw kick-outs. Everyone steps up and that’s what makes them an all-around good team.”

With former East goalie Claire Connors playing three periods in the net and Erin Kay stepping in for the other quarter, the Griffins also struggled at the start, scoring the initial goal of the game but then going more than eight

minutes before they connected again.

“The thing that both of us have working to our benefit is that most of these girls play together in the club season, so they’re very close and they know each other well,” Will said. “Obviously you want to beat another Lincoln-Way, but at the same time you’re happy for the other one when they do well.

“I thought we played really hard. We were down in the first quarter and then we came back. And then they fall down before coming back. At the end of the season between Sandburg, Central and us, it’s going to be anybody’s game.”

After Meghan Fisher started the scoring, Caroline Heathcock got the equalizer a short time later and it remained at 1-1 through one quarter. Central started the second period with two goals from McCabe and another from Erin Muellerschoen, but East got goals from Jordan Bruni, Reis Parkinson and Paige Ruffner in the last 3:10 to even things up at the break.

“We play club season together and our coaches have done a good job of making everything run smoothly so things are working well,” said Muellerschoen, who played on Central’s 2015

state team. “We have a lot of talent this year and getting the girls from East has helped a lot. We communicate and work very well together, and it’s not just a one-person team.”

With Kaylie Pollard performing well in net, East’s run went to 5-0 as Katie Meagher and Fisher opened the third quarter with goals to put them up 6-4, but Central got goals from Megan Cales and McCabe in the final 2:29 to force a 6-6 tie going into the last quarter.

After an exchange of goals by McCabe and Ruffner to even things again with 4:04 left, McCabe connected again to put the hosts up for good with 3:17 remaining, and then Nikki Howe got an insurance goal with 52 seconds left to wrap things up.

“I feel that we all jell really well together and we’ve got a good chance this year,” said Howe, who also was on Central’s 2015 state squad. “We got a lot of really good new players so it’s kind of worked out for us. Our chemistry is good and in the past couple of games we’ve really worked well together. With this my last year, I wouldn’t want to be with any other girls.”

Morgan Turner, 8 years old, wins national wrestling championship SUBMITTED REPORTS RENO, Nevada – Morgan Turner, an 8-year-old Joliet girl, is a world wrestling champion.

Morgan won all four of her matches in the Reno World Championships wrestling tournament last weekend to win the 50-pound weight class in the novice girls 9-under division. She won her opening match via pin in 13 seconds, then won in 23 seconds in the quarterfinals and 48 seconds in the semifinals, before claiming an 11-0 major decision in the title match.

The tournament drew nearly 4,000 youth wrestlers from around the nation, with 434 girls among the entries.

Morgan’s brother, Nori Turner, has won state titles in IKWF and most recently was third in the 62-pound 12U division.

‘Make Your Mark’ games Saturday at Lockport STAFF REPORT LOCKPORT – Mark Staehely was an 18-year-old Shorewood resident when he died from neuroblastoma, the form of cancer that he had fought for six years, in March 2006.

He left a legacy that continues to this day.

The Lockport baseball and softball teams have scheduled their annual Make Your Mark Foundation Strike Out Cancer Games on Saturday at Ed Flink Field and the Lockport softball diamonds, at 1200 Garfield St. All proceeds from the multi-game

event will be donated to the nonprofit Make Your Mark Foundation, which raises money for pediatric cancer. The Lockport baseball freshman A and B, sophomore, JV and varsity teams, along with the visiting teams from Minooka, will participate. So will the Lockport freshman, sophomore and varsity softball teams, along with the visiting teams.

The paid admission includes a donation, one wrist band souvenir and a picnic lunch or dinner. Additional donations will be accepted.

The admission cost is $10 for adults, $7 for students with ID, seniors and

kids younger than 10. Kids 5 and younger will be admitted free.

The Lockport Booster Club also will be raffling items, with all proceeds going to Make Your Mark Foundation.

All players from Lockport, Minooka and Downers Grove South will wear special shirts honoring a family member or loved one who has battled or currently is battling cancer.

PLAINFIELD – It will look like a line drive in the box score.

The old baseball adage never was more true than when describing Plainfield North sophomore catcher Greg Budig’s at-bat in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday.

In the Southwest Prairie Conference opener for both schools, North and Plainfield Central were deadlocked 1-1. With one out, Tigers senior third baseman Alex Steinbach reached on an error. Central’s hard-luck loser, senior Kyle Cockrell (2-1), picked up his eighth strikeout for the second out.

Budig, who had been 0 for 2 with a strikeout, hit a topper that must have a hit a pebble and vaulted over Wildcats third baseman David Ascensio. Steinbach raced home with the eventual game-winning run and what would be a 2-1 North victory.

Central (9-3, 0-1) will travel to North (8-2, 1-0) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for the series finale.

“Finally, one got through for me,” Budig said. “I had been hitting the ball hard earlier in the year, to no avail. It felt good to get the big hit. It’ll look like a line drive in the box score.

“Brady [Corrigan] was outstanding.

Connor [Peplow] came in the seventh and nailed down the save. I am honored to catch our great pitchers.”

The Arizona State-bound Corrigan (4-0), matched up with Cockrell, forming an outstanding pitchers’ duel. It was scoreless through 31/2 innings.

“A real battle against a very good Plainfield Central team.,” Peplow said. “Brady [Corrigan] battled on the mound for us and it was great to see Greg [Budig] get the game-winning hit.

I went out in the seventh and did what I had to do to nail down this big win.”

“The kids are a very confident group,” North coach John Darlington said. “The success we have had here at North I think puts pressure on the kids to be successful. They continue to be successful despite the high expectations that are put upon them. We are blessed with great athletes and that is why we have been successful.

“Brady [Corrigan] was outstanding.

I was very happy to see Greg [Budig] come through with the game-winning hit. Greg had some tough luck in similar sixth- and seventh-inning situations earlier in the year. Connor [Peplow] continues to do what he has to do to help us win.”

“It was a great high school baseball game,” Central coach John Rosner said.

“Kyle (Cockrell) was outstanding again.

Rocky [Pascente] continues to play well both at the plate and behind it.”

Holland intrigued by chance to work with Coop Rodon progressing – but slowly

CLEVELAND – Left-hander Derek Holland said he was intrigued by the prospect of working with Don Cooper when he decided to sign a one-year deal with the White Sox during the offseason, and after going through his first spring training with the Sox pitching coach, he’s convinced he made a good career move.

“I really have to give a lot of credit to Coop,’’ Holland said Tuesday. “For getting me in the right position. I’m back to where I feel comfortable, putting less stress on the shoulder. I feel very good out there on the mound.’’

The Rangers declined an $11 million club option in the offseason on Holland, who is attempting to put a difficult three-year period marked by injury behind him. The Sox signed “The Dutch Oven” for $6 million, and he can earn an additional $1 million if he pitches 150 innings and another $1 million if he hits 200. Fighting shoulder and knee injuries, Holland hasn’t topped 200 since 2013 when he went 10-9 with a 3.42 ERA over a career-high 213 innings.

It’s early, but after allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts and one walk over six innings in his first start against the Twins, Holland takes the ball again Wednesday against the Indians with a bright outlook on 2017.

“All I’m doing is staying back more,’’ Holland said. “If you look at video comparing me to the way I was standing last year, he has me standing taller, using my back leg and using my legs better.’’

Left-hander Carlos Rodon, meanwhile, continues on his throwing program in Arizona as he works through upper biceps bursitis, but he still hasn’t thrown off a mound, which makes a May return less probable than first thought when he was placed on the disabled list to begin the season.

General manager Rick Hahn said at the time Rodon would be re-evaluated on or about April 10 and could possibly start throwing off a mound.

But Rodon will continue to throw off flat ground and will be re-evaluated when the Sox return home next week.

Manager Rick Renteria said Tuesday Rodon “is feeling well” and “doing good,’’ however.

“He’s moving along positively since we’ve had to make the adjustment with him,’’ Renteria said.

“We’ll just re-evaluate him when we get back home and see where he’s at.’’

Rodon made one start during spring training. The No. 3 overall draft pick in 2014 was 9-10 with a 4.04 ERA last season, his second year in the majors.

White Sox fall in 10 CLEVELAND – Michael Brantley doubled home Francisco Lindor with two outs in the 10th inning as the Cleveland Indians celebrated their 2016 AL championship and then beat the White Sox, 2-1, on Tuesday in their home opener.

Brantley could only watch and cheer for his teammates last October during their postseason run after undergoing two surgeries on his right shoulder. But he’s healthy now, and after playing in only 11 games last season, Brantley made the most of his first home game since May 10 with his game-winning hit.

Lindor walked with two outs off Tommy Kahnle (0-1) before Brantley sliced a 3-2 pitch down the left-field line. Lindor was running on the pitch and scored easily while Brantley danced around second base before being mobbed by his teammates.

It was the dramatic ending the Indians didn’t get in their last home game, a 10-inning loss to the Cubs in Game 7 of the World Series. Cleveland led the majors with 11 walk-off wins last season.

Bryan Shaw (1-0), who took the loss when the Cubs won their first title in 108 years, got the win.

Lindor homered in the first and the Indians missed a couple late scoring chances as newly signed slugger Edwin Encarnacion twice grounded into inning-ending double plays with the bases loaded.

Cubs’ Wrigley Field opener a big hit on and off field

bmiles@dailyherald.com The Cubs hit no home runs Monday night in their 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Wrigley Field opener.

As far as the rest of the night went, they knocked pretty much everything else out of the park.

The outdoor plaza on the west side of Wrigley Field has given the entire area a new look, and it seemed to be a big hit with fans.

And the rain-delayed banner-raising ceremony left more than a few people reaching for a tissue, and not because of the rain.

“It was pretty cool,” said pitcher Jon Lester, who started the game. “It’s nice. It was, I think, better than what we expected. Obviously, when the crowd sticks around for a two-hour rain delay that’s always nice. The team going out there and raising the flag and some, I don’t want to say old guys, but some old guys coming back and doing the same

thing.

“It was a special night, something that will go down in my book as something that I’ll remember for a long, long time. I now look forward to Wednesday and getting the fun stuff, getting the ring. So that will be good.”

Jon Lester Lester meant no disrespect to those “old guys,” who happened to be Cubs Hall of Famers Ryne Sandberg, Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins, who raised three of the four banners the Cubs put up as they commemorated the 1907 and 1908 world championships, the 2016 National League pennant and, of course, the World Series title from last year.

As Lester mentioned, there’s more.

The Cubs will receive their World Series rings before Wednesday night’s game as a group of fans will do the presentation.

The Cubs could have done it all Monday – present the rings and unfurl the

banners. But when it’s 108 years between titles, it’s hard not to want the celebration to last.

“I think so that fans can enjoy them each on their own,” said team president Theo Epstein. “That’s a lot to put into one night, not that you couldn’t do it, but something might get lost. I can understand doing it on two separate nights. I think it will prove to be a nice benefit to the fans.

“First of all, more people can say they were there for one of the ceremonies. Hopefully they’re special moments. By the first pitch on Wednesday we can turn the page.”

Manager Joe Maddon has stated his preference for the banner-raising over the ring ceremony. Monday night did not disappoint Maddon.

“It was awesome,” he said. “It was really well done. It’s just a really special night for all of us, for the fan base, for the organization. It was a really special evening. I really liked the idea of Billy, Ryno and Fergie raising them and then our guys. Really well thought out. Just a

special evening.”

It was even more special for Anthony Rizzo, the team leader who led the Cubs in raising the 2016 world-championship banner and then capped the night (into the early hours of Tuesday morning) with a game-winning RBI single.

“I’ll remember this day for as long as I play baseball,” he said. “The walk-off caps it off. That pregame ceremony, I really, honestly didn’t think it would be that amazing a job the Cubs did. The videos, the tribute, it’s amazing.

“The fans, just how amazing they were, we had this whole off-season to dissect it and realize how much it meant to so many people from all over the world, all over the country. For them to enjoy that, for us to enjoy it, it was really cool, it was really cool. It’s our first time back at Wrigley. Being here is special. Being able to do that, we’re the only people alive that have ever done that.”

Star power

Both the Hawks and Predators have middle-of-the-pack power plays, and mediocre penalty kills. Both are strong puck-possession teams at 5 on 5. Both have deep blue lines. So this one could come down to good, old-fashioned star power. The Hawks have the bigger names, with Patrick Kane, Artemi Panarin, Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. But the Predators have their share of offensive firepower. Since the Christmas break, Filip Forsberg has scored 26 goals, third-most in the league.

Victor Arvidsson, one of the best players you might never have heard of, has 22 in that span. Right in between? Kane, with 24. All three of those players can take over a game and a series singlehandedly. The only difference is Kane has done it before, while the 22-year-old Forsberg

What separates the Predators’ blue line from most others is how active the defensemen are in the offense. It’s not unusual to see Josi or Subban actually leading the rush, not simply joining it. So one key is simply being smart with the puck, and not giving Nashville chances to flip the ice in a hurry off turnovers. Another key is to forecheck with abandon. The Hawks aren’t the most tenacious forechecking team around, but they’ll need to do the dirty work deep in the offensive zone in order to pin the Predators’ defensemen deep in their own zone. Otherwise, Corey Crawford will be facing too many 4 on 3s and 3 on 2s.

Who’s on fourth?

These are two of the deepest teams in the league. The Hawks have a leaguehigh six 20-goal scorers (and another, Ryan Hartman, with 19). Nashville only has three (Forsberg and Arvidsson with 31 each, and James Neal with 23), but might actually be deeper up front. The Predators have 12 10-goal scorers and 13 players with at least 20 points. The Hawks have a solid top three lines that are set, but other than Tanner Kero at center, the fourth line remains in flux, with six different wingers in the mix.

The Hawks won their three Stanley Cups on the strength of their four-line rotation, and will have to find it quickly in order to make another run. John Hayden and Jordin Tootoo will get the first crack at flanking Tanner Kero on the fourth line. It’ll likely fall on either Toews’ line or Marcus Kruger’s line to slow down Nashville’s superb trio of Forsberg, Ryan Johansen and Arvidsson.

The Nashville Predators aren’t your typical eighth seed. With the addition of top center Ryan Johansen last season and No. 1 defenseman P.K. Subban last summer, the Predators were a trendy pick to reach the Stanley Cup Final this season. And for good reason. They have high-end scorers up front and one of the best and most aggressive blue lines in the league, led by Subban, Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm.

In fact, if not for a dreadful 6-12 record in overtime and shootouts, the Predators easily could have been a 100-point team. And there are no 3-on-3 overtimes or shootouts to worry about in the playoffs.

But, hey, look on the bright side. The only two times the Hawks have met the Predators in the first round, in 2010 and 2015, they went on to win the Stanley Cup. Here are some X-factors that could determine whether it happens again.

Where the Predators fall short is in goal. Pekka Rinne and Corey Crawford both had a .918 save percentage this season, and Rinne actually was excellent down the stretch, with a .932 save percentage and 1.98 goals-against average in his final 13 starts. That’s the Rinne of old. If he can keep playing like that, rather than the way he’s played for most of the previous two seasons, Nashville can steal this series. But history suggests he can’t. In the postseason, Rinne has posted a pedestrian .912 save percentage and 2.51 GAA in his career. As for Crawford, as good and as proven as he is, don’t forget the Predators briefly cost him his job in the first round two years ago by scoring nine goals on him in four periods.

Kids take the stage

Nick Schmaltz returned from Rockford a changed man, confident and aggressive. Ryan Hartman was been invaluable all season, versatile and tenacious. Tanner Kero has been a surprising stalwart, reliable and responsible. John Hayden has the look of a Joel Quenneville favorite, physical and hardworking. But none of them has ever played in a Stanley Cup playoff game. And none of them

has ever played a season this long, this taxing. How the rookies hold up under the unrelenting pressure and grind of the playoffs will go a long way toward determining the Hawks’ fate. Of course, with six three-time champs to lean on, that burden is eased a bit.

Center of attention

Artem Anisimov hasn’t played since suffering a leg injury on March 14 in Montreal, but is expected to play in Game 1 on Thursday, returning to his usual spot between Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane. After skating for a week in Chicago during the Hawks’ recent road trip, his conditioning should be fine, but how about his timing? Few players can do what Kane did two years ago, when he returned from a broken clavicle and stepped in for Game 1 without missing a beat. Anisimov matched a career-high with 22 goals before the injury, and his excellent all-around play – while overshadowed by his flashier linemates – is critical to the Hawks’ success. Anisimov plays a significant role at even strength, on the power play and on the penalty kill. But only if he’s 100 percent.

Prediction: It’s anything but an ideal first-round cakewalk for the Hawks, but the edges in goaltending and experience are big ones.

Win in final game earns playoff spot

hgould@suntimes.com Eighty-one was not enough. But if the Bulls can win Game No. 82 Wednesday vs. the Nets, they can assure themselves a playoff slot.

If not, they could still sneak in with a loss by Miami.

But they’re embracing the opportunity rather than feeling the pressure, coach Fred Hoiberg said after practice Tuesday.

“The mood is good,” Hoiberg said.

“You have to play your game. You can’t play tight. We have to do what has made us a successful team. We’ve won six of eight. We need to do the things that have helped us along in this stretch.’’

Hoiberg said Rajon Rondo, who has missed the last three games with a sprained right wrist, is day-to-day.

But the veteran point guard said he’s making strides.

“My health is fine,” Rondo said.

“I played some one-on-one [Monday] and I fell pretty hard. But I was able to come out this morning and shoot some basketballs. I might [play].”

Rondo participated in most of the Bulls’ contact drills in practice,

Hoiberg said.

If he does play, Rondo said he doesn’t expect to be limited.

“Not really. It’s not as painful as it was two days ago,’’ he said. ``I’m confident in my team, but I do want to play.

I miss playing the game. I miss getting up and down. But I’m going to try to do the right thing for myself and for the team.”

Although the Nets are last in the Eastern Conference, they have won four of their past six, including Saturday’s 107-106 win in Brooklyn over the Bulls, who blew a nine-point lead with 4:24 to go.

“We need to go out there with unbelievable focus,” Hoiberg said. “They’re playing their best basketball of the season right now when you look at their recent stretch. They’re [the] fastest paced team in the league. We have to get back in transition. We need to do a good job like last night of getting off to a good start and sustain it over 48 minutes.”

Based on their 122-75 rout of the Magic on Monday, the Bulls’ chances would seem good. But the Bulls have been full of surprises, from unexpected wins to startling stumbles.

Baby Back Blues’ ribs are worth the trip

By MYSTERY DINER PLAINFIELD – I saw the video on their website showing how the ribs were made. I also saw them voted as the best barbecue in the area from our readers.

So I had to try the ribs from Baby Back Blues in Plainfield myself.

Located in a strip mall off Route 30 (called Lincoln Highway there) about a mile west of Interstate 55, Baby Back Blues is worth the drive.

I felt like I had no other option than getting the full slab dinner ($28.50), because I wanted the full experience. It was certainly more than I could eat in one sitting, and it was immediately clear why the brown sugar-coated masterpieces were so popular.

I had a hard time stopping myself from trying to eat them all with the sweet barbecue sauce. The meat was tender enough to easily tear off the bone but didn’t fall off by itself. And the taste was hard to match.

The restaurant isn’t huge, but plenty of patrons, like myself, were there for the order and preferred to dive into their food at home.

The atmosphere was fun, there was a decent amount of seating for it not being a huge restaurant, and it’s well lit.

There are smaller options, from just a half slab of ribs ($13.96) to kids meals ($4.25 for chicken nuggets, fries and a drink) to the sandwich Smokin’ Deal with options of pulled pork, beef brisket, pulled chicken, tips or smoked sausage with two sides and a drink for $9.48 (small) or $11.35 (large). The a la carte sandwiches or tips are from $5.52 to $6.05 or from $7.14 to $7.65.

I have no idea how to explain the reason for the price difference between the $7.64 large tips and $7.65 beef brisket sandwich, but I’m sure there’s a reason.

Baby Back Blues serves large portions too, and caters. You can get beef brisket for $16.05 a pound and $15.05 a pound for 5 or more pounds, for example. Or a gallon of mashed potatoes for $26.

But I just wanted the individual size, and was happy with the purchase.

It was good enough, in fact, that I went back.

A family member came to visit and helped out on a home project for the day. The reward?

Ribs for him and ribs for me. Another family member got the pulled chicken sandwich deal and was very pleased with it, too.

As he told me after, those ribs were really good.

He wasn’t wrong.

32 Cured meats tied to greater risk of asthma Dear Doctor: I love ham sandwiches – and have one almost every day. I also have asthma, and just read processed meats can increase the risk of asthma. How can this be?

Dear Reader: Meats have been cured – that is, preserved and flavored – since ancient times, largely through salting or smoking. Potassium nitrate and sodium nitrite salts were used to some degree in the Middle Ages, although the practice was not widespread. In the United States, these salts have been used to cure meat since 1925, and are highly effective in decreasing the incidence of bacterial disease. However, ingested nitrates and nitrites can form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic.

Now comes a study, published last year in the journal Thorax, concluding that cured meats such as ham increase the risk of asthma. The study enrolled 971 male and female participants from five cities in France. The enrollees, not all of whom had asthma, filled out a 118-item food-frequency questionnaire.

Cured items included ham, sausage and dried sausage. Exposure was categorized as less than one serving a week; one to three servings a week; or greater than four servings a week. Participants reported the severity of their asthma over a 12-month period and scored this from 0 to 5, with 5 being waking up from sleep with an asthma attack.

At the beginning of the study, those who consumed more than four servings of cured meat a week were more likely to be men, were slightly more likely to smoke, were slightly more obese and had slightly lower educational levels. Those who ate more than four servings a week of cured meat also were more likely to be asthmatic and have more severe asthma at the beginning of the study.

After seven years, the participants filled out another survey regarding their level of asthma. Among those who ate less than one serving of cured meat a week, 14 percent reported increased asthma symptoms; among

those who ate more than four servings of cured meat a week, 22 percent reported increased asthma symptoms. Noting that increased weight also is a factor for worsening asthma symptoms, the researchers adjusted for weight, smoking and educational levels – and still found a correlation between worsening asthma and cured meat.

Oddly enough, two U.S. studies have found that people newly diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were more likely to eat cured meats four to six times a week, but they did not find an increase in asthma risk. The cured meats here also included hot dogs and bacon.

As for why eating cured meat might worsen asthma, theoretically, nitrites can cause oxidative stress within the lungs and lead to more inflammation within the body, which can worsen asthma. While nitrates and nitrites may worsen asthma, I am not certain they create asthma. In addition, these studies did not separate meats cured by nitrites or nitrates and those cured by other means.

The take-home message: Stay away from meats cured with sodium nitrite or potassium nitrate. Not only are cured meats associated with greater obesity and increased asthma, meats cured with nitrites and nitrates increase the risk of cancer. If you don’t have asthma and you don’t smoke cigarettes, cured meats without nitrites and nitrates should be safe, but still, it’s better to limit them.

If you bid ‘em up, you had better read the cards well. This was the third consecutive six-heart contract that my wife and I bid at bridgebase.com last month.

I would have opened one club with my wife’s hand, but after she passed and I bid one heart, her three-spade response showed fourplus hearts, a maximum pass and a singleton or void somewhere. My three no-trump inquired. Then I used Roman Key Card Blackwood to learn that my partner had two aces and the heart queen. (Yes, it is surprising that East stayed silent.)

If West had led its singleton club, I could not have made the contract.

But West chose the spade six. I captured East’s 10 with my king and played a heart to dummy’s jack. East’s diamond-five discard was a blow.

Now I had to lead dummy’s diamond. East won with the queen and shifted to a club. Having no choice, I played my queen. After a diamond ruff and the heart ace-queen, I had to return to my hand to draw West’s last trump. Judging that surely East would have given West a spade ruff if the opening lead had been a singleton, I crossed to my spade queen and easily took the rest of the tricks.

Note that West was waiting to ruff my club ace.

We were the only pair out of 16 in six hearts. There were 14 in four hearts, and the final table’s auction was bizarre. It went pass - pass - one heart - pass - two hearts(!) - three diamonds (not two no-trump, which would have shown at least 5-5 in the minors) - pass - four diamonds - all pass, making five!

Q: I can hear pretty good when I’m with one person but really have trouble when I’m in a restaurant or a group. Why is that?

A:Often people with certain types of hearing loss such as a high frequency loss can hear the low pitch sounds of speech just fine because their hearing is better or even normal in that range (e.g. vowels, m, n, etc).

However with a high frequency loss people are missing out on the soft high pitch consonants (such as s, f, and p) that are responsible for the clarity or understanding of speech. In a quiet environment our brain can often fill in the blanks when we are missing some of these sounds but in background noise it becomes much more difficult. Difficulty hearing in background noise is an early sign of possible hearing problems and a comprehensive hearing evaluation by an audiologist is recommended.

How do you treat arthritis in your feet?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis.

It affects about half of all arthritis sufferers.

When it strikes the feet, it can be particularly distressing. Although there is little soft tissue swelling, joints often become enlarged, stiff and painful. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed for the pain, and certain exercises can relieve some of the pressure by strengthening muscles around the joints.

Waling and rolling an empty soft drink bottle under the foot are often useful techniques.

Your doctor may also perform ultrasound or heat treatments. For more advanced, debilitating cases, surgery may be recommended to remove bony particles or replace the joint with an artificial implant.

P.S. Two people with similar joint degeneration can have totally different symptoms, such as intense pain or no pain at all.
