Gebhard Brewery - Morris Although there were several hundred small-scale, local breweries in the 1840s and 1850s, beer did not become a mass-produced, mass-consumed beverage in America until the years after the Civil War. In Morris, Gebhard Brewery was founded by German immigrant Louis Gebhard. In 1866, Gebhard began his brewery in a wooden building located on West Washington near the East Fork branch of Nettle Creek.

Twenty years later, Gebhard sold the business to his son, William, who built the business into one that was known throughout the state because the finest quality of malt, grit and foreign and domestic hops were used in the production process.

Within a decade, William expanded the business to include a malt and bottling house (1888) and a seven-story brewhouse (1896). William would continue to construct additions to the brewhouse over the years, including the addition of a stockhouse in 1904, which included a state-of-the-art refrigeration plant.

Around 1912, William’s son, Fred, joined the business and helped with the management and operation of the brewery. Fred worked with his father until the business was closed nearly a decade later.

The process of making beer consisted of malt being elevated to the top floor of the brewhouse, where the beer was taken through several brewing stages by the force of gravity until it reach the stockhouse. It was there that the beer was packed into kegs and bottled by a filling machine.

With the ratification of the 18th Amendment on Jan. 29, 1919, and officially taking effect the next year, Gebhard Brewery was forced to cease operation

by January 1920.

Within a few months, the brewing equipment was sold, and by 1921, the brewery buildings were sold, and the tall brewhouse was converted for use into a flour mill. One such company that used the old brewhouse was the Morris Milling Co., which was in operation from

Life of Jesus told through songs, story at Palm Sunday services

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The unexpected role that three trees played in Jesus Christ’s life was told by Grace United Methodist Church to celebrate Palm Sunday – the beginning of one of the most important time periods for Christians.

Palm Sunday is one of the most pivotal days for Christians as it commemorates Jesus visiting Jerusalem and leads into a Holy Week that ends with Easter Sunday, the holiday that celebrates Jesus’ resurrection. The day is the last Sunday of Lent, the 40-day period Jesus spent fasting and resisting temptation.

Grace United Methodist Church celebrated Palm Sunday with a musical performance by youths who told “The Tale of Three Trees,” by Tom Long and Allen Pote. The story tells the major events of Jesus’ life in an indirect way through the paths of three trees.

Senior Pastor Daniel Diss said the story of Jesus’ life is one of a “new life and life in an expected way.” The trees become what they dreamed to become but not on the paths they expected, he said.

“Jesus’ path was not the path that anyone would have expected,” Diss said.

In the story, the three trees dream of being something fantastic in life – a treasure chest in a king’s palace, a mast

on a ship or to stand tall above all others.

But when the trees are cut down, they find themselves reaching their dreams in ways they didn’t foresee.

The tree that dreamed of being a treasure chest instead becomes the manger for the “priceless treasure” of Jesus when he is a baby.

The tree that wanted to be a mast becomes the bench that Jesus sleeps on in a fishing boat. The tree that aspired to stand tall becomes the plank Jesus was crucified on.

The youths performed the story through song, costumes, narration and piano music.

Michelle Fraser, the church’s chil-

dren and youth ministries director, said they spent months working on the program and learned about Jesus’ journey as they put together the performance.

“I hope you take this message with you throughout this week,” Fraser said to the parishioners.

For Grace United Methodist Church, Diss said Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, and it marks the events of Jesus’ life because they are significant to the “life of the church today.”

Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday commemorate the Last Supper, the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection.

‘She was responsible for keeping people alive’ Dr. Hazami Khater understood surviving and thriving

JOLIET – After Dr. Amin Khater of Joliet graduated from medical school in Austria, he returned home to Damascus, Syria, to check out the medical facilities.

It was at one such facility that he first met the woman he would marry: Dr. Hazami Farhat.

“I noticed she was honest, very highly educated and very smart,” Amin said. “So I asked her if I could come by and meet her family.”

Hazami agreed, as her father also was a doctor. So Amin called on the family, and they discussed medicine.

However, Hazami drilled Amin about his knowledge and skill, trying to discern whether he was “the real thing” and eventually decided he was.

But when Amin proposed, he said it with flowers instead of words, a watercolor of roses he painted for the occasion.

“She accepted,” Amin said. “And the picture came with us when we went to Canada and the United States. And now it’s in the casket.”

Eventually, Hazami would become a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. For three years she would serve as chair of the anesthesiology department at the hospital now known as Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

But she and Amin would overcome some challenges before that happened.

The Khaters left Syria shortly after their marriage on March 24, 1963, and spent a week in Vienna. From there, they traveled to Canada, where Amin approached Santa Cabrini Hospital in Montreal for a job.

“The chairman was German,” Amin said. “When he looked at my degrees and honors, he looked at my wife and said, ‘He’s hired, but we

The goal was to eventually come to the U.S., Amin said. But they had to wait a couple years before they were accepted into the country, Amin said.

Why the U.S.?

“Because it’s the best country in the world,” Amin said. “It’s more ad-

vanced and has more highly educated people.”

The Khaters first worked at Cook County Hospital, Amin in OB/GYN and Hazami in anesthesiology. Amin and Hazami came to Joliet in December 1968 to build their career and raise their family.

They had three children – Dr. Timothy Khater of Texas, an ophthalmologist; Dr. Russell Khater of Joliet, an OB/GYN; and Dr. Kevin Khater of Chicago, a radiation oncologist.

Russell summed up his mother’s career like this: “She was responsible for keeping people alive.”

Although Hazami had a friendly rapport with people, she also was “tough and tenacious.” She’d “stick to her guns” when she was right and wanted proof she was wrong before changing her mind. “She was “intense, ambitious and goal-oriented.”

“She was nobody’s fool,” Russell said.

But then, Hazami came from an unaccommodating situation. It was either “be rigid or break,” Russell said. There was little “margin of error” when she and Amin fled Syria and entered Canada.

“Money was tight. They had no one to count on,” Russell said. “If the money ran out, they didn’t have relatives. There was no one they could crash with, spend a weekend with. They were always one step away from living in a refrigerator box in an alley. ...They had no idea what tomorrow would hold. They were living day to day. They learned the language while trying to get by.

There was no one they could call if they had a problem. If he broke a leg, there was no insurance, nothing.”

From the situation, Hazami learned not to trust fate and not to rely on anyone, Russell said.

“She was as much in control as was humanly possible,” Russell said.

“To be ready for things when they happen, that’s who she was. ... She had a lot of joy in security.”

Those traits, Russell said, also made her an excellent anesthesiologist.

Nevertheless, even after Amin and Hazami were financially secure, she avoided spending money on herself, Amin said. She put her children and patients first. Hazami was 79 when she died March 10.

And Amin misses her terribly.

“Fifty-three years I loved her.

That’s all I can say,” Amin said.

“When we slept, I held her hand and she held my hand.”

Troy Middle School drama director to retire VIEWS Kris Stadalsky After directing 23 musicals in as many years, it’s time for a final curtain call for Troy Middle School drama director and teacher Wayne Barry.

Barry retires at the end of this school year, but not before his students had their final performance of “Beauty and the Beast” a few weeks ago.

Barry was hired to start the middle school drama class, part of a 12-week exploratory program all students participate in during seventh grade. That was back when Troy Middle School was in the Troy Crossroads building.

His first production, “The Wizard of Oz,” was done in one big room on a flat carpeted slab; no stage, no auditorium seating. Over time, the school built platforms to give more space to the actors.

Scenery changes were challenging because there were no curtains to close or go behind. But they made it work by designing foldable sets with different scenes on each panel.

When the middle school building

opened in 2002, the drama department bloomed. Barry loves special effects, so musicals had flash pots and fog machines, live dogs graced the stage in both a second rendition of “The Wizard of Oz” and “Annie,” actors flew across the stage on wires in “Peter Pan,” and the balloon the wizard used to escape from Oz raised to the rafters with a hydraulic lift.

Barry loves making a difference in the lives of his students. Taking a drama class adds so much more to a child’s life – it’s a chance to use other skills such as math and science for set designs, to learn about the technical side of lighting and sound, it causes students to use critical thinking skills, and best of all, it helps them to create long-lasting friendships.

“I try to instill life skills they can take into any career,” Barry said. “This builds confidence.”

And if a student finishes the course and finds a lifelong love of theater, that’s icing on the cake.

While Barry teaches seventh-grade students, he always invites some sixthgrade students to participate in his shows. It gives them a chance to work on their skills for the next year or find out whether drama is for them.

Barry also makes sure that special needs kids are included in his musicals; everyone gets a chance to participate.

“I never like to turn a student away; it does so much for them and their self-esteem,” he said.

While Barry is retiring from a total

of 36 years of teaching, he certainly won’t be sitting idle. His plans include traveling, taking a class in voice-over to do radio, which he’s done in the past, and perhaps starting a community theater program right in Shorewood.

Barry chose “Beauty and the Beast” for his final work at Troy Middle School before the newest movie even came out. He chose it because it relates to all audiences, plus the costumes and scenery had so much potential.

After the final performance, he got a standing ovation from students, staff and family and two special cakes from the parents.

Despite long, late night rehearsals and hard work on sets, Barry has always loved what he does and the students he has worked with.

He loves creating magic on stage and with costumes, and has worked with some amazing student actors.

“I love theater,” he said. “Getting to work your passion and do what you love, it doesn’t seem like it’s really work sometimes.”

The Joliet Cyborgs team has participated in the Midwest Regional FIRST Robotics Competition for the sixth year in a row. The team is divided into groups focused on building, programming, designing, marketing and organizing.

The team’s robot, Cerberus, is equipped with a 12-volt car battery and is able to move around, climb up a rope and pick up plastic whiffle balls that it can shoot. The students put the robot together under a tight six-week schedule with limited resources and under strict rules.

With the world championship coming up, the Joliet Cyborgs team is seeking funding to offset costs for the event.

Connelly said the team is raising money through corporate sponsors, but others can make donations through the district’s alumni website.

District officials said in a news release that the team provides an important introduction to real-world science, technology, engineering and mathematics problem-solving in addition to providing important financial aid opportunities to students.

“Over 90 percent of Cyborgs students continue on in STEM fields, building on what they have learned in the [robotics program],” a district news release stated. More than 75 percent of the Cyborgs’ students are first-generation college students, and a quarter are first-generation Americans.”

MINOOKA – A Missouri man was found dead in the trailer of his semitruck Thursday afternoon at a Citgo gas station in the 17000 block of Ridge Road in Minooka.

Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell confirmed that Kevin Kealey, 64, had not completed his delivery, and his company saw that the GPS on his truck indicated it had not moved for a day, so they called the police.

When authorities arrived, they found Kealey pinned by several 8-foot boards of plywood in the trailer.

Kealey likely was trying to rearrange the contents of the trailer when they fell on him.

Purcell said the cause of death likely was some sort of traumatic asphyxiation.

JOLIET – The Joliet Cyborgs team has advanced to the FIRST Robotics World Championship.

The championship will take place from April 26 to 29 in St. Louis. The Joliet Cyborgs is made up of students from Joliet Township High School District 204 who’ve constructed a robot named Cerberus to compete.

The team has been competing in the Midwest Regional FIRST Robotics Competition against 3,100 other teams worldwide, according to a District 204 news release.

“It’s a big deal; it’s a big honor to get that far. …The kids are really excited right now,” said Thomas Connelly, a team mentor and Joliet Central High School teacher.

Team member Ruth Pina said she is extremely proud of the Joliet Cyborgs.

She said that when she went to the competitions, she was sort of expecting to be the only girl there, but she saw many other girls, including those in leadership roles.

“It’s a big deal; it’s a big honor to get that far. …The kids are really excited right now.”

LOCAL BRIEF Lane closures coming on Route 30 in Plainfield, Aurora, Oswego

Lane closures will take place along Route 30 in Plainfield, Aurora and Oswego beginning Monday, weather permitting, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release.

The closures are necessary for a resurfacing project.

In order to complete the work, lane closures will take place in both directions on Route 30 from Lincoln Station Drive to 143rd Street with flaggers to guide traffic through the work zone. Daytime and overnight closures will be used when necessary.

The scope of the project consists of resurfacing and pavement patching, as well as sidewalk improvements that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The overall project is expected to be completed this summer.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on alert for workers and equipment.

Decompression therapy turns low back pain to no back pain SPONSORED BY

By Gina Kraman A luxurious, arms-reaching-to-the sky stretch soothes the body. That’s the theory behind spinal decompression therapy, which stretches the spine to bring relief to the lower back.

Dr. Frank Ostir, Ostir Physical Medicine in Joliet, explains that decompression therapy provides non-surgical intervention to reduce lower back (lumbar) pain, while restoring the spine’s stability.

He says, “The goal is to unload the spine through decompression, using two machines that can be positioned to target a patient’s exact spot of pain. The Lordex RX-1 is a lumbar extension machine which immobilizes the lower body to exercise the lumbar muscles, move the joints, and re-educate the neuromuscular system for better stability and strength.”

“Your back is made up of bones (the vertebrae or spinal column, which protects your spinal cord) and muscles. The vertebrae are stacked like blocks; the spinal cord runs down the middle, and between the vertebrae, nerves

extend from the spinal cord to the left and right,” explains the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“The disks lie between the vertebrae, and form spongy shock absorbers between each bone. Several layers of muscle cover the back; ligaments and tendons support the vertebrae, supporting posture and giving the body flexibility.

Back pain can be caused by problems with the muscles, bones, or nerves in the back.”

The American Spinal Decompression Association (ASDA) explains that decompression therapy gently separates the vertebrae from each other, which creates a vacuum inside the disc to relieve pressure and pain. It happens microscopically, although cumulative treatments over four to six weeks can produce “dramatic results.”

Ostir explains, “While more traditional treatments can include drugs, difficult exercises, and even surgery, spinal decompression treatment is a non-invasive alternative. It’s been proven effective in treating many conditions, including sciatica, herniated discs, and more. It’s successful for both chronic or intermittent pain.”

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College will once again highlight environmentalism and sustainability through a series of events for Earth Month.

The celebration of the 47th annual Earth Day on April 22 will continue throughout the month with events that include the Houbolt Road cleanup, a wellness and resource fair, a sustainability expo, recycled art competitions, tours and speakers. The college has shown commitment to sustainability through student activities and infrastructure projects.

JJC professor Maria Anna Rafac said the theme for this year’s Earth Month is “What can you do?”

“How can we be part of the solution?” she said.

And the answers may be found in many of the events being planned, such as the SMHEC Student Sustainability Summit on Friday, the Earth Day Sustainability Expo on April 19, the natural areas and fen tour with JJC professor Andy Neill on April 20 and Jeffrey Bennett, an astronomer who will speak about climate change

April 24.

The Houbolt Road cleanup near the college’s main campus took place Saturday with the Student Sustainability Union and the Helpers of Mother Earth, led by Virgil Kemp. Rafac said students and staff will work on cleaning up properties throughout the road.

“We’ll be trying to clean up the neighborhood,” she said.

On Wednesday, a wellness and resource fair will take place at the college, and a Joliet green drinks event by the Land Conservancy of Will County will take place at Tin Roof Restaurant in Joliet.

The big Earth Day Sustainability Expo will take place April 19 at the college, as well as other events such as free food, giveaways, sustainability movies and crafts.

A March for Science will be April 22 in Chicago. Participants are expected to meet at Union State in Joliet.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to get our voice out there,” Rafac said.

On April 26, Rafac will give a walk and talk on LEED – or green-friendly – buildings at JJC, and the Arbor Day celebration will occur April 28 with the Student Sustainability Union and JJC

Harriet A. Richards (nee Rasmussen), passed away peacefully with her family at her side, at Rosewood Care Center, Saturday, April 8, 2017. Age 83 years.

Survived by a son, Edward (Mary ) Richards Jr. of Waukesha, WI; two daughters, Kay (James) Novak of Shorewood and Anne (Richard) Doss of Lake Charles, LA. Eight grandchildren, Lynnea (Jim) Derocher, Paul (Becky) Richards, Phillip (Jodie) Richards, Ryan (Laura) Novak, Brett Novak, Mark (Austin) Novak, Samantha (Thomas) Milhoan and Katie Krock. Thirteen great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. Her sister, Janet (Raymond-deceased) Reardon; and a niece, Stacey Reardon.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Edward R. Richards Sr., (2014); a grandson, Christopher Richards; and her parents, Harry and Elnora Rasmussen.

Harriet was born in Joliet on July 22, 1933. She graduated from J.T.H.S Class of 1951. Harriet and her husband, Ed, enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, AZ, where they had a active social life and many close friends from all across the U.S. and Canada.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, who will be dearly missed by all.

Harriet’s family would like to thank Dr. Ramesh Patel and Dr. Sarode Pundaleeka for their many years of compassionate care.

He retired from Lennon Wallpaper Co., Joliet. Dwight enjoyed listing to music, golf, and telling endless jokes.

Raymond was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a proud owner of his own business working as a well driller.

Raymond would give you the shirt off of his back and was always willing to give a helping hand. He was very proud of his Croatian heritage. Raymond was a wonderful son, brother and uncle. The family would like to send a special thank you to all of Ray’s “Sweethearts” at Our Lady of Angels; he loved you all. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

McClintock Sr. on July 17, 1954, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Minooka. A lifelong homemaker, following the education of her children she worked at the Minooka Post Office for 10 years. A faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Minooka. Also a member of the Prayer Chain, The Quilting Ladies of St. Mary’s and Weekly Adoration at the Poor Clares Monastery, Minooka.

Donna was an avid gardener and loved spending time with her family and friends.

STATE Illinois moves to rein in property confiscation laws

SPRINGFIELD – Kara Bland’s 2010 Chevy Malibu still had temporary plates when police seized it for a crime she did not commit. She loaned it to the father of her daughter, who was arrested after picking up someone who had marijuana on him.

For six weeks, Bland took her 6-year-old daughter to school on a Chicago city bus and relatives helped her run errands before a judge released the car on bond. It took nine months to officially regain ownership and cost her $1,000.

“They intentionally try to make this process as difficult and confusing as they can ... so that people will eventually give up,” she said.

Bland, 24, was a victim of a contentious practice that allows law enforcement to seize vehicles, cash and other property thought to be connected to a crime, and to profit from it. The plight of innocents whose property is seized has helped fuel a flurry of legal changes throughout the country that seek to limit such police powers.

Since 2014, 19 states and the District of Columbia have altered some aspect of their forfeiture laws. Twelve states now require a criminal conviction to formal-

Advocates file complaint in disabilities consent decree

CHICAGO – Attorneys have filed a federal complaint alleging that the state of Illinois is not fulfilling its commitment to fund disability services as required by a 2011 consent decree, saying that a refusal to increase reimbursement to providers has caused a dramatic deterioration in the care of those with developmental disabilities.

INDIANAPOLIS – An Illinois-based veterans advocacy group has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Indiana’s ban on political robocalls, arguing that free speech should outweigh privacy rights.

Patriotic Veterans Inc. is appealing a 7th Circuit Court ruling that said Indiana has a legitimate interest in blocking unwanted, automatically dialed phone calls, the Indianapolis Star reported.

CHAMPAIGN – The new federal lobbyist for the University of Illinois is a Capitol Hill veteran who’s worked for the Peace Corps and congressional committees.

The proposed changes would require law enforcement agencies to openly catalog what they seized and why.

Law enforcement advocates say civil forfeiture is about more than raising funds. It’s a way of undercutting criminal enterprises by seizing the cash they use to operate, said Howard Williams, a former police chief who now teaches at Texas State University and wrote a book about forfeiture.

“You cripple their ability to operate,” he said.

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police opposes the new legislation in its current form, fearing it would essentially end the practice, said association lobbyist John Millner, Elmhurst’s former police chief and a former state senator.

The Illinois State Police declined to discuss specifics, but like the police chiefs, a spokesman said the agency is working with the proposal’s sponsors to ensure it would protect innocent property owners but not hamstring officers’ ability to deter criminal activity.

Exhibit to highlight Aurora’s involvement in World War I

AURORA – A new exhibit in downtown Aurora will honor the city’s involvement in World War I. The Beacon-News reported that local historians are pulling together more than 80 artifacts for an exhibit that will open Memorial Day. The items include the mess kit of an Aurora soldier, uniforms, a doctor’s bag, a diary and propaganda posters.

Visitors also will be able to enter an 18foot reproduction of a trench.

The exhibit comes as the U.S. marks the 100th anniversary of the country’s entry into the war. Historians said more than 3,600 people from Aurora joined the military during the war.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s national security adviser on Sunday left open the possibility of additional U.S. military action against Syria after last week’s missile strike but indicated that the U.S. was not seeking to act unilaterally to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad.

In his first televised interview, H.R. McMaster pointed to dual U.S. goals of defeating the Islamic State group and removing Assad. But he suggested that Trump was seeking a global political response for regime change from U.S. allies as well as Russia, which he said needed to re-evaluate its support of Syria.

“It’s very difficult to understand how a political solution could result from the continuation of the Assad regime,” McMaster said. “Now, we are not saying that we are the ones who are going to effect that change. What we are saying is, other countries have to ask themselves some hard questions. Russia should ask themselves ...why are we supporting this murderous regime that is committing mass murder of its own population?”

After last Tuesday’s chemical attack in Syria, Trump said his attitude toward Assad “has changed very much” and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said “steps are underway” to organize a coalition to remove him from power.

BEIRUT – Russia and Iran renewed their support for the Syrian government in a flurry of calls Sunday, saying last week’s U.S. missile strike violated Syrian sovereignty but failed to boost the morale of “terror groups” in Syria.

In a phone call with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the strike Friday a “blatant violation” of Syrian sovereignty, Syrian state media reported. Assad accused the U.S. of trying to boost the morale of “terror groups” in Syria.

Trump seeks GOP consensus on taxes

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has scrapped the tax plan he campaigned on and is going back to the drawing board in a search for Republican consensus behind legislation to overhaul the U.S. tax system.

The administration’s first attempt to write legislation is in its early stages and the White House has kept much of it under wraps. But it has already sprouted the consideration of a series of unorthodox proposals including a drastic cut to the payroll tax, aimed at appealing to Democrats.

Some view the search for new options as a result of Trump’s refusal to set clear parameters for his plan and his exceedingly challenging endgame: reducing tax rates enough to spur faster growth without blowing up the budget deficit.

Administration officials say it’s now unlikely that a tax overhaul will meet

the August deadline set by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. But the ambitious pace to figure out a plan reflects Trump’s haste to move quickly past a bruising failure to broker a compromise within his own party on how to replace the health insurance law enacted under President Barack Obama.

The White House is trying to learn the lessons from health care. Rather than accepting a bill written by the lawmakers, White House officials are taking a more active role. Administration officials have signaled that they want to pass tax legislation with only Republican votes, yet they’ve also held listening sessions with House Democrats.

White House aides say the goal is to cut tax rates sharply enough to improve the economic picture in depressed rural and industrial pockets of the country where many Trump voters live. But the administration so far has swatted down alternative ways for raising revenues, such as a carbon tax, to offset lower rates.

Trump has not said which trade-offs he might accept and he has remained noncommittal on the leading blueprint, from Rep. Kevin Brady, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. Brady, R-Texas, has proposed a border adjustment system, which would eliminate corporate deductions on imports, to raise $1 trillion over 10 years that could fund lower corporate tax rates.

But that possibility has rankled retailers who say it would lead to higher prices and threaten millions of jobs, while some lawmakers have worried that the system would violate World Trade Organization rules. Brady has said he intends to amend the blueprint but has not spelled out how he would do so.

Other options are being shopped on Capitol Hill.

One circulating this past week would change the House Republican plan to eliminate much of the payroll tax and cut corporate tax rates. This would require a new dedicated funding source

for Social Security.

The change, proposed by a GOP lobbyist with close ties to the Trump administration, would transform Brady’s plan on imports into something closer to a value-added tax by also eliminating the deduction of labor expenses. This would bring it in line with WTO rules and generate an additional $12 trillion over 10 years, according to budget estimates. Those additional revenues could then enable the end of the 12.4 percent payroll tax, split evenly between employers and employees, that funds Social Security, while keeping the health insurance payroll tax in place.

This approach would give a worker earning $60,000 a year an additional $3,720 in take-home pay, a possible win that lawmakers could highlight back in their districts even though it would involve changing the funding mechanism for Social Security, according to the lobbyist, who asked for anonymity to discuss the proposal without disrupting early negotiations.

Paul Ryan, who shuns hardball, seeks win after health care loss

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – House Speaker Paul Ryan needs a win after the collapse of his health care bill. Achieving that won’t be easy for the 47-year-old leader, whose ascent as a Republican heavyweight has been marred by an embarrassing flop on the most momentous legislation he’s ever handled.

Last month’s unraveling of the health care legislation, thanks to conservative versus moderate battles that still rage, tarnished Ryan’s reputation as the leader who could unite a fractious GOP. Next come tax and spending fights as fraught as the party’s stymied attempt to dismantle President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

“I don’t know that the Lord himself could unite our caucus,” said Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho.

Ryan, R-Wis., will need all the clout he can muster to succeed with those upcoming bills and with continuing attempts to resurrect the health care legislation. He cannot afford another reversal without risking further erosion of his own power, although no one says his hold on the speakership is in imminent jeopardy.

“He’s got to show movement, either on health care and-or other issues,” said former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss. Lott said the health care retreat “makes it harder, but it makes it also more important that they get these other things done.”

House leaders plan to focus on a bill preventing a late-April government shutdown and on a plan to revamp the federal tax system. Guiding them will be Ryan, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee. He was pressed into the speaker’s job in 2015 as a telegenic star who appealed to all segments of the party, replacing the ousted Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Fast forward to now.

Republicans have yet to heal from the events of March 24, when Ryan abruptly canceled a House vote on the health care bill because opposition from both wings of the party would have sunk it. The retreat wounded President Donald Trump and Ryan, who along with other Republicans, long made repealing Obama’s 2010 law a campaign pledge – only to lay an egg three months into uncontested GOP

control of Washington.

“It was not a good day, I totally agree with that,” Ryan said in an interview last week.

There was plenty of blame all around, raising questions about how the party will band together on its upcoming agenda. Key will be Ryan’s relationship with Trump, which seems functional after a presidential campaign that saw Ryan criticize Trump’s comments about Hispanics and women.

Trump and moderates blame the hard-line House Freedom Caucus for resisting a health care compromise.

Conservatives accuse Ryan of not consulting them early as he drafted the bill and not cracking down on recalcitrant moderates. Trump pressed GOP leaders to move quickly, in the end prematurely, in search of an early legislative triumph over solid Democratic opposition.

“The president wanted us to get it going,” Ryan said. “There was a desire to get an aggressive timetable. We wanted to meet that aggressive timetable.”

Ryan said that going forward, “It means we have to talk things out much, much, much more thoroughly.”

Lott and others don’t fault Ryan.

They say the episode illustrates the depth of GOP divisions, the stubbornness of the Freedom Caucus and how little sway leaders have over today’s 237 House Republicans – drawing sympathy even from Democrats.

“There are days I feel bad for him,” Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., said of Ryan.

Spaniard’s long wait to win first major ends in playoff at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sergio Garcia tugged the lapel of his green jacket with both hands, proud of his prize and how he earned it.

His hopes were fading Sunday in the Masters – two shots behind with six holes to play – when his tee shot bounced off a tree and into an azalea bush, the kind of bad luck he had come to expect in the majors. Instead of pouting, he figured out how to make par.

Five feet away from winning, his birdie putt peeled off to the right. Usually resigned to fail, Garcia proved to be more resilient than ever.

He was a new man with a new title: Masters champion.

Major champion.

“It’s been an amazing week,” Garcia said, “and I’m going to enjoy it for the rest of my life.”

After nearly two decades of heartache in the tournaments that define careers, Garcia finally showed the mettle to win a major. He overcame a two-shot deficit against Justin Rose and won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

No one ever played more majors as a pro (70) before winning one for the first time.

Garcia got rid of the demons and the doubts with two big moments on the par 5s – one a par, the other an eagle – in closing with a 3-under par 69.

It was never easy until the end, when Rose sent his drive into the trees on the 18th hole in the playoff, punched out and failed to save par from 15 feet.

That gave the 37-year-old Spaniard two putts from 12 feet for the victory, and his putt swirled into the cup for a birdie.

He crouched in disbelief, both fists clenched and shaking, and he shouted

Garcia became the third Spaniard in a green jacket, winning on what would have been the 60th birthday of the late Seve Ballesteros. And it was Jose Maria Olazabal, who won the Masters in 1994 and 1999, who sent him a text on the eve of the Masters telling Garcia to believe and “to not let things get to me like I’ve done in the past.”

He didn’t get down after missing a 6-foot putt on the 16th hole to fall out of the lead, or missing a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have won in regulation.

His chin was up. He battled to the end.

“If there’s anyone to lose to, it’s Sergio. He deserves it,” Rose said. “He’s had his fair share of heartbreak.”

This was shaping up as another, especially after Garcia watched a three-shot lead disappear as quickly as it took Rose to run off three straight birdies on the front nine.

Tied going to the back nine, Garcia immediately fell two shots behind with wild shots into the pine straw bed under the trees. Rose was poised to deliver a knockout on the par-5 13th when Garcia went left beyond the creek and into the bush. He had to take a penalty shot to get out and hit his third shot 89 yards short of the green. Rose was just over the back of the green in two, in position to turn a two-shot lead into four.

Everyone figured this was coming, right?

Garcia himself had said, in a moment of self-pity, that he didn’t have what it takes to win a major. Four times he was runner-up. This was his third time playing in the final group.

But right when it looked to be over, momentum shifted to Garcia.

He hit wedge to 7 feet and escaped with par. Rose rolled his chip down to

“You know, the par on 13 obviously was big. ... In the past, I would have, I would have started going, you know, at my caddie, and oh, you know, why doesn’t it go through and whatever,” Garcia said, laughing.

That line was funny because in the past, not everybody laughed along.

What changed this year is that Garcia caught some breaks and finally

5 feet and missed the birdie putt. The lead stayed at two shots, and the game was on.

Garcia birdied the 14th to get within one. His 8-iron into the par-5 15th – “One of the best shots I hit all week,” he said – landed inches in front of the hole and nicked the pin, and he holed the 14-foot eagle putt to tie for the lead.

Rose took the lead with an 8-foot birdie on the 16th and gave it back by missing a 7-foot par putt on the 17th.

Not since 1998 have the last two players on the course gone to the 18th tied for the lead, and both had their chances to win. Rose’s approach hit off the side of the bunker and kicked onto the green, stopping 7 feet away. Garcia answered with a wedge that covered the flag and settled 5 feet away.

The playoff didn’t last long. Rose was in trouble from the start with a tee shot that sailed right, leaving him blocked by a Magnolia tree. He chipped out under the tree, hit his third shot to 15 feet and missed the par putt.

had the maturity to acknowledge that’s how it’s been all along – the good AND the bad. Most memorably, perhaps, was the 4-iron that landed on the bank on that same hole a day earlier. Instead of trickling into the creek, it stayed stuck in place as though the grass was Velcro.

He parlayed that unexpected good bit of fortune into a 70 Saturday that put him alongside Rose in the final pairing.

When Garcia stood at the same hole in the final round staring at trouble on the bank above the creek, he decided to fight back instead of folding up.

He carried that attitude all the way to the 18th and when he missed a 5-footer that would’ve given him a win in regulation, he simply redoubled his effort.

“I think the problem is, because where my head was at sometimes, I did think about, am I ever going to win one?” Garcia said. “I’ve had so many good chances and either I lost them or someone has done something extraordinary to beat me. So it did cross my mind.

“But lately, you know, I’ve been getting some good help and I’ve been thinking a little bit, a little bit different, a little bit more positive. And kind of accepting, too, that if it for whatever reason it didn’t happen, my life is still going to go on. It’s not going to be a disaster.

“But,” he said finally, a wide smile stuck in place, “it’s happened.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. – He couldn’t catch a break. Sergio Garcia said that so often at majors like the Masters you were sure it would be etched into his tombstone someday.

He always had an alibi ready.

Bunkers that weren’t raked until after he played out of them. Putts that curled around the hole only to spin away. Tee times that put him on the course in the teeth of a storm while rivals like Tiger Woods always drew blue skies and sunshine.

Garcia seemed so certain that fate had it in for him that like Pigpen from the cartoon strip “Peanuts,” he didn’t dare look up. There was always going to be a cloud of dirt and dust following him around.

No more.

On a picture-perfect Sunday, on what would have been the 60th birthday of his countryman and idol, Seve Ballesteros, the 37-year-old Spaniard made a birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff to beat Justin Rose.

“Obviously this is something I wanted to do for a long time but, you know, it never felt like a horror movie,” Garcia said afterward. “It felt like a little bit of a drama maybe, but obviously with a happy ending.”

The final putt rolled only 12 feet, but it felt like 12,000. It took seconds, but it felt like years. He and Rose have been butting heads since they were 14, but

the distance between them grew as wide as a gulf when the Englishman notched his first major in 2013 at the U.S. Open.

“Any time one of those guys gets that huge monkey off their back,” Rose said graciously, “I think it makes it a poignant major championship. ...

“It’s always a nice to be a part of history,” he added a moment later. “I would have liked to be the right part of it, but nevertheless I hope it’s a good one.”

Any talk about Garcia’s history before this Masters would have been a tale filled with anguish. He was a bona fide star at 16, a prodigy whose promise went unfulfilled, first by the emerging dominance of Woods and later by forces only he seemed to see.

The one thing everyone else focused on were his sad-sack results in golf’s big events until that last putt rattled at the bottom of the cup: 0 for 70 in his pro career.

Barely five years ago, after Augusta National got the better of him yet again, Garcia stormed off and said he’d had enough. “I will try to be second or third,” he said.

No more.

He was the only player in the field to break par all four days. He started the back nine a combined 31-over par in 18 previous appearances and played it 1 under the one time it mattered most.

The centerpiece was a scrambling par at No. 13 that required the kind of grit even he must have doubted he had.

Up until then, the long-running duel between Garcia and Rose seemed bound to end badly for the Spaniard. Rose already owned a two-shot cushion and

Angels look for more success under Kinsella

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Although Joliet Catholic Academy’s softball team has a familiar look with several veterans hoping to improve upon last year’s 21-9 record, there is one major difference.

After serving as a longtime assistant with the program, including the past five seasons with the varsity team, Tina Kinsella takes over the top spot from Dave Douglas, who ended his 26-year coaching stint last season with nearly 600 victories.

With four-year varsity starters third baseman Paige Callans and second baseman Reilly Jo Swanson and three-year varsity junior shortstop Caitlyn Spreitzer leading the way on a team with eight returners, hopes are high that the Angels will have continued success.

“Working with Dave for 15 years, whether as a JV coach or a varsity assistant, I learned a lot,” Kinsella said.

“He was a great mentor for me, and little by little, he did allow me to implement things here and there knowing that this time would come. As I told the girls when we started, I’m not going to

forget everything we’ve done for the last 10 years of Angels softball. We’re going to stick with the same things since ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’

“I couldn’t have asked for a better team to coach in my first year. Reilly will attack like no other, Paige is so quick, and Caitlyn has the best fundamentals that I’ve seen. And we have one of the fastest outfields that we’ve had here. We have great hitters, but we have to be able to string hits together.

If our core of the lineup gets hot, it will be contagious. And our pitchers have to give our infielders and outfielders the opportunity to make plays.”

With several of the key players having been around their new coach during the past few seasons, Kinsella’s transition should be a smooth one.

“We have a lot of quality players, but we’re still getting used to the new coaching,” Callans said. “We just have to put it all together and it should work out great. We have been focusing on a lot of fundamental stuff, and that should help us a lot in games. I love being a leader on the field, one of the big sisters on the team. We all are really strong hitters, so once we all put that together, we’ll be amazing, so we just

We’re really confident in our girls since we’re connected. We know each other and are friends and all hang out. We just need to communicate well and be there for each other in order to pick them up.”

Other players on the roster are senior pitcher Kailey Kovas, senior first baseman Kendall Spreitzer, junior outfielders Holly Bernhard and Maggie Carroll, sophomore outfielders Tessa Green and Megan Ortinau and sophomore pitcher Noelle Chovanec.

“Kinsella pushes us really hard, so we’ll be prepared this season,” Swanson said. “This is my last year, and we have a really good bond and our infield clicks well together. And with Jen behind the plate, Kailey throwing strikes and our outfield getting better every day, that’s all that we can ask for. It’s definitely an honor to be Kinsella’s first group of seniors. She’s an awesome coach, and it’s nice for us to help her have an easy transition.”

The 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act require potentially major sources of air emissions to obtain federally enforceable operating permits. A FESOP permit allows a source that is potentially major to take operational limits in the permit so that it is a non-major source. Track changed; Johnson still wins

FORT WORTH, Texas – Jimmie Johnson still knows how to get to Victory Lane at Texas, even from the back of the field on a track that had changed significantly since his first six wins there.

And while heating up in the cockpit because of an issue with getting fluids during the race.

“I’m not feeling the best, but we got into Victory Lane,” Johnson said before going to the infield care center to get treatment for apparent dehydration after his 81st career victory.

Crew chief Chad Knaus said there was some kind of malfunction with the system in the car, but wasn’t sure what the problem was.

“Jimmie felt like it was an isolated situation,” Knaus said. “We got him cooled off and he’s looking good. He’s ready to go have a weekend off like the rest of us.”

Johnson, who last year won his record-tying seventh NASCAR Cup Series season championship, charged under Joey Logano with 16 laps to go to take the lead. The Hendrick Motorsports driver kept his No. 48 Chevrolet in front.

“I guess I remembered how to drive; and I guess this team remembered how to do it,” Johnson said.

“I’m just real proud of this team.

What a tough track and tough conditions. We were really in our wheelhouse, and we were just able to execute all day.”

This was the first Cup race in Texas since the 11/2-mile facility was completely repaved and changes made to Turns 1 and 2 earlier this year. It was Johnson’s seventh victory at Texas, and six in the past 10 races there.

Kyle Larson, the season points leader, finished second for the fourth time this year, but also won at California. Logano, polesitter Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top five.

Johnson had to start at the back of the 40-car field because of a tire change after a spin in qualifying. He had qualified 24th.

Johnson’s only top-10 finish in the first six races this season had been ninth at Phoenix. Earnhardt, his Hendrick teammate, had his first top-five finish since a runner-up at Pocono last June, not long before he missed the last half of the season because of lingering concussions symptoms.

Forget mph; Arrieta strikes out 10

bmiles@dailyherald.com MILWAUKEE – The radar gun might not lie, but it doesn’t always tell the whole truth.

And, truth be told, Jake Arrieta isn’t worried about it either way.

Arrieta won his second decision of the season in two starts Sunday as he and his Cubs teammates beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-4, at Miller Park.

The Cubs took two of three in the series as they did in St. Louis in the opening series of the season. They come home Monday night for the Wrigley Field opener.

As for Arrieta, he might not be throwing 96-, 97-, 98-mph fastballs, but he still struck out 10 Brewers while walking only two. He worked seven innings of three-hit, three-run ball to run his record to 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. “Everybody wants to talk about this,” he said of velocity. “There are FanGraphs articles. I don’t care about that. I know that kind of stuff can come and go from time to time. I had periods last year where I was at the same spot I’m at right now. I had one in June, near the All-Star break.

“It is what it is. I still have a good feel for everything. Movement is really good.”

Most important, the command is good for Arrieta, who has 42 wins since

“When the 95-97 comes back, it’s going to be tough for teams, and it still is,” he said. “Where I am now in my career I don’t worry about it because I know that I’m smart enough to work around that, and the velocity is still good enough to get it by guys and to do certain things in certain situations

with it.”

Manager Joe Maddon likes this Arrieta look.

“Great command of his fastball and a really good curveball,” Maddon said.

“Ten punchouts and about 100 pitches is really efficient, too. He was really on top of his game today. And I love the delivery. I love the command. That’s

the thing. He didn’t hit 95 or 96 or whatever, but he knew where the fastball was going. I much prefer that over velocity.”

Arrieta’s teammates staked him to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Zach Davies by sending nine men to the plate. Addison Russell had a tworun double, and Jason Heyward followed with a two-run triple.

After a down year at the plate in 2016, Heyward is off to a 7-for-21 start.

“Just try to go up there and be aggressive in the strike zone,” he said.

“Put a good swing on the ball and see what happens after that.”

Heyward had an RBI single in the seventh and was robbed at the wall in center field in the ninth on a leaping catch by Keon Broxton, a play that prompted Heyward to tip his helmet to Broxton.

The Cubs scored 11 runs on 17 hits in Saturday’s victory. They picked up 11 hits Sunday, with more hard-hit balls than they had the previous night.

Kyle Schwarber led off the second with a home run, and Ben Zobrist homered in the seventh. The Brewers had pulled within 5-3 in the third on a three-run homer by Ryan Braun.

All in all, the Cubs will take a 4-2 road trip to start the season.

Quintana looks good despite taking second straight loss

Baseball statistics always have validated Jose Quintana’s standing as one of the game’s better pitchers.

Even before he was named to his first All-Star team last season, the White Sox left-hander boasted numbers equal to some of the game’s best pitchers.

He entered Sunday’s start against Minnesota ranked among the best American League pitchers since 2013, standing first in starts (130), third in quality starts (86) and seventh in ERA (3.39) and strikeouts (702).

He is one of six pitchers to post 200plus innings and 30 or more starts in each of the past four seasons – joining Madison Bumgarner, Cole Hamels, Jon Lester, Jeff Samardzija and Max Scherzer.

He was in the shadow of teammate

Chris Sale before, but his talent never was lost in the baseball world – which is why he remains a coveted trade target despite his rocky start to this season.

Quintana has lost both his starts so far, including Sunday’s 4-1 final in the rubber game against Minnesota.

But he looked more like the AllStar pitcher of old than the one who struggled in his first Opening Day start last week against Detroit, when he gave up six runs in 51/3 innings.

“He didn’t make mistakes really,” shortstop Tim Anderson said. “He was Quintana. He’s been doing it a long time.

“He’s one of those guys when he steps on the mound, we feel we’ll win.

We feel like that with all our teammates, but I definitely feel he’ll build off this.”

Quintana (0-2) gave up five hits over 61/3 innings and trailed only 1-0

before Jorge Polanco homered to start the 7th.

He struck out seven and walked one.

But like the other part of his Sox history, run support behind him was minimal.

Twins starter Ervin Santana (2-0) lowered his ERA to 0.69, keeping the Sox scoreless on two singles through six innings.

“I thought Quintana threw well and kept us in the ballgame,” manager Rick Renteria said. “We didn’t do it on the other side against Santana.”

The Sox had chances – they stranded 10, including leaving the bases loaded in the eighth when they scored their only run after Brandon Kintzler (third save) hit Avisail Garcia to force in a run.

The Twins, a surprising 5-1 to start the season, added two runs in the eighth on Miguel Sano’s two-run

homer off Nate Jones.

“I felt pretty good and my command was better than the first game,’’ said Quintana, who has had a history of trouble with the Twins (0-3 with a 5.04 ERA in his past four starts against them).

“I was frustrated with the pitch [to Polanco for the home run.] It was a 1-2 count. I was trying to go away and get him to chase, but he hit the ball good.

“I was frustrated and got a little emotional, but it happens. It’s the beginning of the season. You just keep going.”

Quintana’s performance reinforced what the Sox have come to expect from the lefty.

“One of the things as a pitcher is you know what’s working well for you,” Renteria said. “You’re able to work through things like he did today.”

LONG BEACH, Calif. – James Hinchcliffe raced to his first victory since his near-fatal accident in 2015 by hanging in a three-lap shootout to the finish Sunday on the streets of Long Beach.

Hinchcliffe had two strong late restarts to win in a Honda for Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports. It was the Canadian’s first victory since 2015 at New Orleans, a month before he nearly bled to death in an accident during practice for the Indianapolis 500.

Hinchcliffe wrecked during a May practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and his life was saved by the attrack safety crew that smartly pinched off the blood flow and raced him into surgery. He missed the remainder of the 2015 season, returned to IndyCar last year and then capped it with a runner-up finish on “Dancing With the Stars” during the offseason.

Never did he doubt any of his accomplishments were in jeopardy after his accident.

“Absolutely, I knew from day one I

had the best support,” said Hinchcliffe, who considers winning at Long Beach a crown jewel event. His sights are now set on the Indianapolis 500 and his home race in Toronto.

Sebastien Bourdais followed his season-opening victory at St. Pete with a second-place finish to give Honda a 1-2 podium finish. Bourdais started driving this year for Dale Coyne Racing based in Plainfield.

Josef Newgarden was the highest finishing Team Penske driver and was third in a Chevrolet.

Scott Dixon was fourth in a Ganassi Honda, and defending race winner Simon Pagenaud, from Penske, drove from last to fifth.

It was a miserable day for Andretti Autosport, which seemed to have a shot at putting at least one driver on the podium. Instead, Marco Andretti retired early with an issue. Then, in the final 17 laps, the remaining three Andretti cars all had race-ending problems.

Alexander Rossi slowed on the front stretch to bring out a full course caution, and Hinchcliffe took the lead as Dixon pitted.

SHOREWOOD – Treat Fido to a fun day outside during the ninth annual “Hugs for Hounds” doggy Easter egg hunt on Saturday in Shorewood.

The event will start at 11 a.m. at Hammel Woods – DuPage River Access, located on Black Road, east of Route 59.

The egg hunt will take place in the preserve’s dog park.

“Hugs for Hounds” is presented by Shorewood HUGS, a local non-profit women’s organization that fulfills wishes and supports other charitable organizations, and the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Participants are encouraged to bring a basket to collect their pups’ Easter eggs, which will be filled with special prizes or doggy treats. More than 3,000 Easter eggs will be scattered in the dog park. Dogs need to touch the treat with their noses or paws before their owners can claim the eggs.

A $5 entry fee per dog will be donated to support the care, feeding and training of the forest preserve’s K-9, Julio.

Prizes will be awarded for the best canine Easter outfit, the largest and smallest dogs, dog that traveled the farthest and dog that looks most like its owner.

Bring your dollars for a doggy Easter basket and gift card drawing. Drawing tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Dogs must be leashed and accompanied by owners at all times. Dog park permits are not required to participate, but permits will be available for purchase. You must have an up-to-date rabies tag number to purchase a permit.

Dogs participating in the egg hunt must be current on all vaccinations.

High-intensity exercise can affect men’s libido

fewer men in the low-libido group: only 60 compared to 1,017 in the normal-to-high libido group.

In men reporting normal-to-high libido, 33.1 percent exercised 4 to 6 hours per week; 35 percent exercised 7 to 10 hours per week; and 22.2 percent exercised more than 10 hours per week. Conversely, in the low-libido group, 10 percent exercised 4 to 6 hours per week; 23.3 percent exercised 7 to 10 hours per week; and 65 percent exercised more than 10 hours per week.

Researchers also assessed level of intensity and how many years the participant had been exercising at that intensity. In the low-libido group, there were three times as many intense/prolonged exercisers than there were moderate intensity/duration exercisers.

So, yes, this study shows that males who exercised at a high intensity for many years had a lower libido than those with a more moderate track record. But keep two things in mind. One, the low-libido group consisted of only 60 people, so the power of the data is not strong. Two, 22.2 percent of men in the normal-to-high libido group exercised more than 10 hours a week; 65 percent in the low-libido group exercised that much.

Unless you exercise more than 10 hours per week, every week, I wouldn’t be concerned.

That said, if you’re finding that your libido is low and you’re exercising more than 10 hours per week, you might want to reconsider your priorities.

Dear Reader: Exercise is unequivocally good for men’s libido. Compared with sedentary individuals, men who exercise regularly have higher testosterone levels, greater libido and greater fertility. But extreme exercise is not without risks. Hormones are complex, and although the body is adept at regulating them through feedback mechanisms – a finely tuned system known as the hormonal axis – that feedback can be disrupted. In women, chronic endurance exercise training can lead to disruption of the hormonal axis, which can affect their menstrual cycle and fertility. It can similarly disrupt men’s hormonal axis, leading to testosterone levels at the lower end of normal. The question is: What degree of exercise leads to this disruption, and does the disruption lead to decreased libido?

The study you mentioned, published earlier this year in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, attempted to answer this question – at least among men. Male subjects filled out online surveys about their level of exercise and their level of libido. Data were gathered from participants who were healthy, free of hormonal disorders, not taking prescription medications, older than 18 and involved in sporting activities. The researchers’ primary focus was those men involved in organizations associated with endurance running, biking or triathlons.

Of the men who filled out online surveys, 1,077 men met the overall criteria, with respondents answering questions about the total number of hours exercised per week and the level of exercise intensity. The researchers also separated the men into two groups: low libido and normal-to-high libido. Notably, there were considerably

Last month, my wife and I were playing online at bridgebase.com against robots (computer-controlled opponents). We had a very rare occurrence, bidding to six hearts on three consecutive deals. Each was interesting, starting with the one in today’s diagram.

I like strong jump shifts to the two-level, but keep them narrowly defined. The responder has either a strong one-suiter or a good two-suiter (opener’s suit and the suit in which responder jumps). In principle, the point range is 12-16: sufficient to insist on game, but asking opener to decide on slam.

Look at the North hand. Given that introduction, assuming you open one diamond, what would you rebid after partner responds two hearts?

I was not fond of rebidding three diamonds with such a weak suit. If partner had a heart one-suiter, my queen-doubleton was acceptable support. I might have rebid two notrump to see what partner did (but that would have promised 15-plus points in our system because we use the weak-no-trump opening that shows 12-14 points). At the time, I bid three hearts.

Now partner rebid four diamonds, which I thought was at least fourcard support. Since we seemed to have a good double fit, I control-bid five clubs. This persuaded my partner to jump to six hearts. Understandably, she expected me to have better diamonds.

West led the club three: ace, eight, 10. Immediately, declarer played two rounds of diamonds.

West, guided by partner’s unwise club-eight signal, led another club, so we made the slam.

One other pair bid (and made) six hearts after North passed, and South opened two clubs!
