Lincoln-Way D-210 candidates dispute over campaign flyers

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Two slates competing for the Lincoln-Way District 210 school board are at odds over a campaign flyers that has reignited controversy over the closing of North high school.

The three-member slate consisting of board members Joe Kirkeeng and Joe Kosteck and non-incumbent Aaron Janik has distributed flyers accusing the five-member Citizens For 210 slate of “taking a second bite at the apple to reopen North” and focusing on closing West, Central or East high schools.

The board approved the closing of North in 2015 as a cost-cutting measure in response to the district’s dire finances.

Many residents objected to the board’s decision, including the Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite group, which has since disbanded but before doing so initiated an unsuccessful legal effort to block the closing of North.

In a statement, the Citizens For 210 slate disputed the flyer, stating “nothing

could be farther from the truth” because their slate sees “all of our [school] buildings as assets to the district” and wants to figure out how to “best use all of them.”

“We want to get in there and see what’s going on with all four buildings, actually, and doing assessments on what needs to be repaired,” said Lee Talley, a Citizens For 210 slate member and former LWATU member.

Talley said the slate thinks the flyer was “uncalled for” and a “bit of a low blow.”

Kirkeeng said his slate used information quoted from past statements of Citizens For 210 members and from the rival slate’s website for the flyer. Among some of the claims, the flyers state that at a Feb. 11 meet-and-greet, the Citizens For 210 slate indicated it wants to “revisit North’s closing.”

The flyer also states none of the candidates gave a direct answer at a forum March 8 when asked whether they favored the current school configuration at the district.

“It was a noncommittal response,” Kirkeeng said.

At the forum, all the candidates said they favored the current configuration

with the exception of some Citizens For 210 members who said they needed more information or wanted to weigh all options.

The slate was asked at the forum if their purpose for gathering financial information such as building budgets was a precursor to reopening North. Slate member Karen Town said she’s repeatedly said she’s not interested in changing the current school configuration but “we definitely have to look at all of those options for the future.”

Kirkeeng said Citizens For 210 has circulated campaign literature that paints current board members with a “very broad brush,” such as one flyer that stated the district continues its “fiscally irresponsible practice of borrowing tens of millions of dollars each year.”

Slate member Ben Yomtoob said the flyer didn’t name any candidates and wasn’t meant to conclude the board is doing something wrong. Yomtoob said his issue with the other slate’s flyer is that it drew the wrong conclusion based on the information it had presented and took one quote referring to the slate’s frequently asked questions document out of context.

The anti-electioneering rule may seem obvious, but it’s not to everybody.

“On Election Day, if we run into any concerns, that is it,” Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said.

The area 100 feet from the door to the voting room is considered a campaign-free zone, Voots said. Violators will be told to adjust.

“You cannot wear a baseball cap that says, ‘Vote for whoever,’” Voots said.

It’s not unusual for campaigns to try to get a name in front of voters as they head to the voting booth. The driveways to buildings used as polling places tend to be lined with campaign signs at the street, but they are at a distance far enough away to meet legal requirements.

State’s Attorney James Glasgow has assigned two-person teams, each consisting of an assistant state’s attorney and an investigator, to travel to polling places where irregularities are reported on Election Day, according to a news release from his office. Other assistant state’s attorneys will be available as well to investigate irregularities reported to the hotline.

Friends come together to start brewing business

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – This spring, Channahon residents who once spent nights together perfecting their home brew beer and wine will share their beer knowledge, as well as that of a brew school graduate, at River Hawk Brewing.

The soon-to-open craft beer brewery was put together by friends Tom Sperling, Tim Engler and Dustin Fryman, all of Channahon, who have brewed together for the past 10 years. The trio recently hired Ian Pershey of Channahon, who graduated from Brewlab, located in the United Kingdom.

During a brainstorming session on a name, Fryman threw out River Hawk because of the natural landscape and wildlife found around the Channahon area, and it stuck.

The owners wanted to create something local in their community and couldn’t be happier with the location at 24735 W. Eames St. in Channahon.

“We looked for six months, and we knew we wanted a Minooka or Channahon location. After searching, this property became available on Route 6, which was easy to get to, ideal building and we have parking in the front and back,” Fryman said.

The owners hope to open in the next month or two.

The brewery takes up four business fronts and will feature European tavern-style seating with long wooden community tables, where customers can chat with friends and get to know their neighbors while they sip a blueberry wine or porter beer. A tasting bar will accommodate large groups as they sample any of the 10 to 16 brews and four wines with the brew tanks as a backdrop.

“Our tasting room is larger than most and has a beautiful street view. We hope to build a sense of community, and with all of us working here, people can inquire about our beers and our story,” Fryman said.

Engler said the brewery was set up with 12 fermenters, which allows for a wide range of beers from a basic lager to a stout.

“If there is a style, we will probably have it,” Engler said.

No leak found in probe of police list

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city’s inspector general reported Monday that a city council candidate likely got the addresses of Joliet police officers the way she said she did and that there was no evidence of a leak at city hall.

But officials will consider removing the names of city employees from a list of salaries on the city website in the aftermath of the incident.

Inspector General Chris Regis reported his findings after Rachel Ventura, a candidate in the city council election Tuesday, was held up to public criticism at a city council meeting March 21 for a campaign mailing to police officers.

City officials suggested the information was leaked to Ventura, who said she obtained the addresses from public information that included the salary list on the city’s website.

“I was able to follow that method, and I was able to replicate the results achieved – mistakes and all,” Regis said at the city council meeting Monday.

The issue arose, he said, because of concerns about the “security of data here at city hall and in the police department.”

“We’ll never know for sure,” he said, “but I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that the information she obtained did not come from city hall.”

Ventura, who is not a council member, was not at the meeting.

Reached afterward, she said, “I’m glad that they were able to see that I didn’t do anything wrong. ... I’m upset

that they accused me of basically false crimes. An apology would have been nice.”

A police union leader and two city council members who are also on the ballot Tuesday – Brooke Hernandez Brewer and Jan Quillman – at the March 21 meeting accused Ventura of putting police lives in danger for even having the police addresses.

Ventura’s name was not mentioned

by Regis or other city officials during a brief discussion after the report.

But Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and City Manager Jim Hock discussed removing employees’ names from the salary list on the city website. The list does not include addresses, which Ventura said she obtained by checking police names with voter records, which contain addresses.

O’Dekirk said he had heard from police and other city employees concerned about public access to their names and addresses. He suggested that the salary list be changed so it includes job positions but not names.

Hock said there is no legal requirement to post names with salaries on the website.

“I believe that information could be obtained from a FOIA [Freedom of Information Act request], and then we know who’s requesting that information,” Hock said.

Ventura said she was concerned about the possibility of removing the list as it exists now from the city website. She said taxpayers should be able to see how much individuals are getting paid.

“I believe that kind of transparency is needed,” she said.

2 brothers dead of gunshot wounds after quarrel Sunday

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Two brothers died Sunday night after a shooting incident in Braidwood. Chief Nick Ficarello said police are investigating the deaths.

“This appears to be a self-contained incident. There is no danger to the public,” Ficarello said.

At 9:14 p.m., shots were reported at a house in the 200 block of Park View Lane. Officers went inside to find the bodies of James A. Benson, 25, and Joseph O. Burgess, 35. Benson lived in the house, while Burgess was a resident of Bourbonnais.

An autopsy performed Monday

showed both men died from gunshot wounds. Will County Chief Deputy Coroner Kevin Stevenson said the cause and manner of death will be determined after police and toxicology reports are completed. A .357 revolver was recovered by police.

“Witnesses stated that an earlier quarrel between both victims had previously taken place just prior to shots being fired,” Ficarello said.

The brothers’ mother was in another room at the time and another person witnessed some of the confrontation, Ficarello said.

Ficarello said police reports listed one prior call to the residence for a fight between the brothers “a couple years ago.”

Maintenance building, 7 vehicles inside a ‘total loss’ after fire

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Fire gutted a Forest Preserve District of Will County maintenance building Monday afternoon.

An alarm at 3:48 p.m. brought East Joliet firefighters to the 66-by-80-foot metal structure at 22606 Cherry Hill Road in Joliet Township. Forest preserve district spokeswoman Cindy Cain said it appears the fire started in the center of three garage bays in the building.

“The operations crew work early shifts and had all left for the day,” Cain said.

No one was injured. The building houses dump trucks, equipment such as chain saws, a few offices and the operations department’s lunchroom.

At the time, the building contained seven vehicles, East Joliet Deputy Fire Chief Kirk Kelly said.

Kelly said it took more than an hour to extinguish the blaze.

“It looks like the building and the ... vehicles inside are a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation,” Kelly said Monday evening.

Manhattan, New Lenox, Elwood, Rockdale, Wilmington and Channahon firefighters assisted at the scene, while Mokena and Troy agencies covered for other calls in East Joliet.

2 women, teen arrested after Joliet street brawl Saturday

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two women and a teenager were arrested after police officers interrupted a brawl Saturday on a Joliet street.

The ruckus began about 11 p.m. Police were on patrol in the 1500 block of Englewood Avenue and came across a large crowd fighting in the middle of the street before the melee moved into a courtyard off Fairmont Avenue, Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“The officers got out of the car to break it up and were able to get a hold of some of those who were fighting,” Gregory said. “Latasha Harley, 39, was still punching another woman while be- Curley Boens ing grabbed by an officer ... and handcuffed.”

A 14-year-old girl then allegedly punched Harley and another woman before she could be restrained. Curley Boens, 35, also was allegedly hitting a

man when she was handcuffed by police.

The rest of the crowd dispersed and a second brawl started nearby but had broken up before officers reached it, Gregory said.

“The fight was the result of a feud between families over infidelity,” Gregory said.

Boens, of the 1500 block of Fairmont Avenue in Joliet; Harley, of Cleveland, Ohio; and the teenager were charged with mob action, obstructing a police officer and disorderly conduct. The

juvenile was released to her mother’s custody and the women were released on bond.

After Boens and Harley were arrested Saturday night and released on bond a short time later without being taken to jail, Will County Jail records indicate Boens was arrested again in Joliet and booked into jail early Sunday for violating those bond conditions and allegedly damaging property. Will County court records indicate she is banned from an Englewood Avenue residence if she is able to post a $15,000 bond.

Joliet parent upset with school’s response to bullying issues

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A former Gompers Junior High School parent is upset with how the school has addressed the bullying of her children, and Joliet Public Schools District 86 officials said they plan to investigate the situation.

Brenda Garcia said her three children – including her two sons who recently attended Gompers – have been bullied at the school. She claims not enough was done to address the issue.

As a result, she pulled her two sons out of school in late March, she said.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse said she met with Garcia on Monday and that district officials plan to investigate her concerns. Garcia said she didn’t know how seriously the district would take her situation.

“They put me and my family through so much,” she said about Gompers.

The district declined to allow The Herald-News access to Gompers staff for an interview. District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said the district restricted reporter access because the bullying situation involved a specific incident with a student and cited student confidentiality concerns.

Former Gompers Junior High School parent Garcia said the bullying of one of her sons, which was both physical and verbal, began last fall. She claimed the school did not do enough to resolve it.

She said the bullying that one of her sons and her daughter, who has since graduated, experienced at the school has caused them to be suicidal.

“We already live in a bad neighborhood and I feel like the schools need to be more of a safe area. A comfort zone,” Garcia said.

She said it wasn’t until March that she learned about the district’s bullying report system through Oscar Cuevas, leader of anti-bullying organization Learners for Justice. She said Gompers officials did not provide her with the form to make a report. She has since filed one. She also said she wasn’t made aware by officials of the school’s anti-bullying hotline.

Parents are sent letters on the bullying reporting process, she said.

Anti-bullying resources are also communicated through the district’s parent-student handbook, which parents and children are required to sign a receipt of receiving.

Cannon said the district has had anti-bullying hotlines for its schools for almost three years and there are posters in the buildings about it.

“That’s not to say we’ve reached every single person, but in terms of student body, several ways of communication have been provided to families since we’ve implemented the bullying hotline,” she said.

Schools within the district conduct investigations into bullying complaints but in some cases, the district gets involved, she said. If parents are not satisfied with the school’s response, they can contact the district or her, Cannon said.

Sperling said that once the brewing begins and customers can give feedback on their favorites, the brewery will have its staple beers, but he wants to offer a variety to the customers to keep things fresh.

Sperling, who has made his own wine at home, will make all the wines on-site.

“I wanted to also bring people in who don’t like to drink beer; we want to please everybody,” he said.

The owners spared no expense when it came to equipment and quality of water and ingredients. A separate room from the brewery houses the reverse osmosis water system, which leaves the water pure so the brewers can begin with a clean slate and add the neces-

sary ingredients to make a clean-tasting beer. They also have built a lab in order to test what goes into the beer to ensure quality.

Pershey created his own yeast farm, which he will use instead of dry packaged yeast when brewing begins.

“We wanted to have a high-tech system for the new brewery. We want to have all of the right stuff, for example, the water and yeast, consistent so we can repeat our batches,” Sperling said.

Until the state approves their license, the owners head to the brewery site after their day jobs to build their business. The crew took up all of the floors and walls and built them back to their specifications. They can be seen cleaning tanks, building tables and putting on the final touches so that when they have the license in hand, they are ready to brew.

The Plainfield Village Board approved the village’s balanced 2017-18 budget on Monday night. the budget.

The water and sewer fund includes the reduction in a capital charge on residents’ bills. The board in December approved a decrease in that charge from $7.50 per month to $7 per month.

Trustees would like to continue reducing the charge.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke said he was hopeful other trustees would have followed his attempt to keep taxes the same by lowering the tax levy while

property values go up, but to no avail.

The tax levy is the same as the previous year, but assessed values have gone up, he said.

O’Rourke said he also was hopeful to see costs allocated to bring Plainfield Emergency Management Agency to an upgraded facility, but it didn’t happen.

He also wanted more in the budget to deal with traffic congestion.

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board approved a zoning map change Monday night that will allow an auto repair business to eventually open at the southwest corner of the Route 30 and Renwick Road intersection.

The board changed the zoning from B-1, neighborhood convenience district, to B-3, highway business district. The site previously was a Lube Pros, but a zoning change or special-use permit was required – according to zoning code – because more than a year has passed since it was last in business.

Director of Planning Jonathan Proulx described the case as a “challenging one” for the village, because its vision is to redevelop the corner as one consolidated parcel. The applicant owns the subject lot at 15908 S. Lincoln Highway – also known as Route 30 – but has tried unsuccessfully to get adjacent land owners on board with a joint redevelopment.

“I think each property owner has a different idea of what a fair value is,” Proulx said, adding that this applicant tried in good faith to coordinate a redevelopment of the corner for more than a year.

the board approved an expansion of the Menard’s at 13441 S. Route 59. The company will construct a 20,403-squarefoot detached warehouse building, and extend its fenced outdoor storage and sales area slightly to the north. Modifications also will be made to existing attached and detached warehouse spaces that will add to what is already a 165,000-square-foot facility.

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board adopted a balanced 2017-18 village budget on Monday night.

Trustees voted unanimously to approve the budget, which takes effect in May, and splits $59.1 million among the village’s departments using a stabilized tax rate for the third straight year.

The budget includes an estimated $24,784,315 in expenditures and $24,784,315 in revenue in the general fund. The village estimates a total fund balance of more than $35 million in April 2018, the end of the budget year.

Director of Management Services Traci Pleckham presented the budget, which has been worked on since October and included a series of public workshops and meetings with various department heads.

Trustee Margie Bonuchi said there isn’t anyone on the board who wouldn’t want to lower taxes.

Trustee Bill Lamb said the board has seen versions of the budget seven or eight times since October, adding that staff has done a great job controlling expenses.

“They’re very conservative on the revenues so we have a budget that’s very solid,” Lamb said. “Staff does a very good job at making sure every dollar spent counts. We get good value for it.”

Shirley was a model for hard work and dedication to her family. She worked in the restaurant industry and then for Georgia Pacific. Shirley loved cooking big meals for her family, playing cards, watching her favorite game shows and attending any event with live music. Family will fondly remember Shirley for her sense of humor and loyalty to those she loved.

Surviving are her beloved children, Denise (John) Warmouth of Channahon, Barb (Jim) Price of Arizona, Alex Gladkowski of Missouri and Cheryl (Kirk) Wood of Glendale Heights; and her loving grandchildren, Vanessa (Brook) Bearden, Melanie (Dennis) Thompson, Emily Warmouth, Lee (Sarah) Price, Eric Price and Anna Price; and her brother, Phillip Keener. PHOENIX – The singer of the 1960s hit “Angel Baby,” a song covered by artists such as John Lennon and Linda Ronstadt, has died.

Rose Hamlin, the 71-year-old lead singer of Rosie and the Originals, died in her sleep on March 30, according to a post by her daughter, Debbie Cray, on the late performer’s website.

Hamlin was born Rosalie Hamlin on July 21, 1945, in Oregon. She was raised in Alaska before moving to California when she was a preteen.

Hamlin was 14 years old when she penned “Angel Baby,” a song that Lennon would later call one of his all-time favorites.

Cray said Hamlin hadn’t performed in years over concerns for her health, but she had taken up tending a “lovely garden,” according to her post on the website.

Hamlin wrote in her autobiography online that she penned “Angel Baby” about a teenage love and struggled for years to get credit for the song after a man was listed as its writer.

“We were musicians and not businesspeople. We got burned like so many of our peers in those days,” Hamlin wrote.

Her son, John Sanders, said his mother told him about the difficulties of the music industry. “She really had to work a lot harder to get the same recognition,” she said.

Hamlin also wrote about her pride in many of her accomplishments, such as being in an exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, about one-hit wonders. Hamlin wrote that she was the first Latina to be on that list, and she also was the first Latina to appear on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” show.

Hamlin lived in New Mexico at the time of her death.

In 1994, she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Northern Illinois University, and worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse at Edward Hospital, Naperville, until 2013.

Jodi was a loving wife, a dedicated mother and a cherished daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed following her children’s school activities including Providence girls softball and basketball, Providence boys tennis and Minooka boys baseball. She was also an avid Chicago White Sox fan.

Surviving are her devoted husband, Devry Alan Spreitzer, who she married August 20, 1994 in New Lenox; her beloved children, Andrew Edward, age 20, Nicholas Raymond, age 17, Jenna Christine, age 15; her loving mother, Patricia Siebers; her brother, Edward Siebers and his children, Jordan and Shaun; and brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Debbie Siebers, and their children, Samuel, Jessica and Alyssa; her husband’s parents, Ray and Suzanne Spreitzer

CHICAGO – Chicago blues musician Lonnie Brooks, whose relationship with his adopted hometown was cemented by his hit recording of Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago,” has died at age 83.

A prolific musician known for his intense guitar solos and raspy but strong voice, Brooks died on Saturday night, his son Ronnie Baker Brooks said Sunday.

Brooks came to the blues by a circuitous route.

Born Lee Baker Jr. in Louisiana, he was focused on playing the guitar when he was noticed and invited to Chicago by soul singer Sam Cooke more than 50 years ago. He stayed and changed his name to Lonnie Brooks.

He recorded a number of albums for Chicago-based Alligator Records’ “Living Chicago Blues” series, in-

cluding classics such as “Bayou Lightning,” ‘’Hot Shot,” and “Lone Star Shootout.” He appeared in Dan Aykroyd’s film “Blues Brothers 2000.”

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune in 1992, Brooks said the blues did not come naturally to him at first.

“Then one night, I saw Magic Sam [Maghett] in a little blues club on the South Side. He went on stage right after he’d gotten into a big fight with his girlfriend, and it was like he was taking it out on his guitar. I seen how it came from the heart, so I went home to the basement, and got into that mood that Magic Sam had been in, and the blues came to me,” Brooks said.

He toured for many years with his sons Wayne and Ronnie, who are both guitar players.

“He was a great family man and a great musician and did a hell of a job with both,” Ronnie Baker Brooks said.

Cullerton touts bill to protect immigrants

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate Democrats, contending that immigrants are hiding in their homes because of aggressive actions by President Donald Trump’s administration, promoted legislation Monday that would bar law enforcement from entering state-supported schools or health facilities without a warrant looking for immigrants in the country illegally.

Senate President John Cullerton’s said his “TRUST” act is a response to growing anxiety in immigrant communities because of federal raids and anti-immigrant rhetoric from the new Republican president.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on Chicago’s northwest side last week led to the shooting of a man by an agent.

“We’re drawing a bright line between do’s and don’ts for police,” Cullerton told a Chicago news conference hosted by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

A crackdown on illegal immigration has been a cornerstone of Donald Trump’s presidency. He has pursued a promised wall on the U.S.-Mexican border, threatened to withhold funds from so-called “sanctuary” cities, and immigrant advocates have questioned

Illinois man pleads not guilty in 40-year-old cold case

KANKAKEE – An Illinois man accused of killing his wife and scattering her dismembered body in two rivers nearly 40 years ago has pleaded not guilty in the cold case.

A Kankakee County Grand Jury charged 70-year-old Thomas A. Small last week with two counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide, the Daily Journal reported.

Small is accused of bludgeoning his 26-year-old wife, Diane Marie Riordan Small, inside their home in Bradley on Oct. 15, 1980. Court documents say Small hid his wife’s body in an attic for about two days before taking it to Coles County, dismembering it and tossing it into the Embarras and Vermillion rivers.

No discipline for N’western frats after sex assault claims

EVANSTON – Northwestern University said no disciplinary action will be taken against two fraternities after sexual assault allegations.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Northwestern made the announcement Friday. The move comes after Northwestern administrators in February issued a security alert when reports were made that as many as four female students were possibly given a date rape drug during a

“TRUST” act in 2014. Andy Kang, director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice and a primary author of the Illinois adaptation, said Oregon, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont have similar laws. New York and Maryland are considering versions.

The measure has four main tenets.

First, it creates “safe zones,” barring law enforcement authorities from entering state-supported school or health facilities without a warrant. In addition, no local officers can be deputized as federal officers for an investigation without a warrant.

Cullerton stressed that the measure would not keep police from investigating crimes or apprehending suspects.

“But the prevailing criteria to detain an individual should not be based on someone’s citizenship, immigration status, background or beliefs, but by the blind exercise of the rule of law,” Cullerton said.

The plan would also set deadlines for police to complete paperwork for immigrant crime victims who cooperate in an investigation. Those who cooperate are eligible for special visas that allow temporary residence, but police are often slow or negligent in completing them.

And expanding on the sanctuary city idea – places such as Chicago, Evanston, and Urbana where immi-

grants in the country illegally are largely left alone – Cullerton’s legislation would ban local participation in any sort of registry based on religion, race or immigrant status.

Currently, there is no such registry, and Sheldon Nahmod, a constitutional scholar at Chicago-Kent School of Law, said no president would have an easy go in such a registration law being declared constitutional.

The U.S. Supreme Court has found that Washington can’t withhold funding as a punitive measure, Kang said.

He said it’s unlikely a local police department could find itself losing federal dollars for skirting cooperation with the feds.

The legislation will have a hearing Wednesday in the Senate Executive Committee. House Democrats have introduced some similar measures to limit local police cooperation and bar immigration authorities from schools, churches or hospitals without warrants. Republicans have raised objections.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis would not comment on whether the governor supports Cullerton’s initiative, but said, “Illinois is a welcoming and diverse state and the governor believes in comprehensive immigration reform.”

CARBONDALE – A Carbondale man is the new crappie king in Illinois.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that Ryan Povolish last Tuesday pulled from Kinkaid Lake a crappie that weighed in at 4 pounds and 8.8 ounces – breaking the record of a fisherman who pulled a 4 pound, 8.2 ounce crappie from Rend Lake nearly 40 years ago.

When he hooked the fish, Povolish initially believed that he had hooked a bass.

But when his buddy, Josh Jackson, pulled out the fish, he said neither of them could believe that he’d caught a crappie that big.

NEW YORK – A Fox News contributor came forward to level more sexual-harassment allegations against deposed chief executive Roger Ailes on Monday, two days after it was revealed the network’s most popular onair personality, Bill O’Reilly, has settled multiple complaints about his own behavior with women.

Democrats claim votes needed to block Gorsuch McConnell: GOP will confirm nominee Friday

WASHINGTON – Democrats claimed the votes they needed Monday to block President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, but the victory was only fleeting, setting up a historic showdown with Republicans who intend to rewrite Senate rules and muscle Neil Gorsuch onto the high court.

The coming fight was assured as the bitterly divided Judiciary Committee voted, 11-9, along party lines, to send Gorsuch’s nomination to the full Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has vowed he will be confirmed on Friday.

Short of the 60 votes needed to overcome procedural hurdles, McConnell is ready to lead Republicans in a unilateral voting change so significant in the rules-conscious Congress that it’s been dubbed the “nuclear option,” lowering the confirmation threshold to a filibuster-proof simple majority in the 100-member Senate.

Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware became the key 41st vote for the Democrats on Monday, declaring during committee debate that Gorsuch’s conservative record showed an activist approach to the law and that he evaded questions during his confirmation hearings. Coons also said that Republicans’ treatment of former President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, left lasting scars after they denied him so much as a hearing following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia early last year.

“We are at a historic moment in the history of the United States Senate” because of actions by both parties, Coons said. “We have eroded

the process for reaching agreement and dishonored our long traditions of acting above partisanship.”

By day’s end, 43 Democrats had said they won’t support Gorsuch.

The long-term consequences of the coming confrontation could be profound, as the rules change Republicans intend to enact would apply to future Supreme Court nominees, too, allowing them to be voted onto the court without any input from the minority party. And though predicting a justice’s votes can be difficult, confirmation of the 49-year-old Gorsuch is expected to restore the conservative majority that existed while Scalia was alive, which could then be in place or even expand over decades to come as some of the more liberal justices age.

For Republicans and Trump, Gorsuch’s confirmation will be a moment of triumph, a bright spot in a troubled young administration that’s failed on the legislative front with the health care bill and is under investigation over Russia connections.

The nomination of Gorsuch, by contrast, has won universal praise from Republicans, some of whom call his appointment Trump’s best move so far as president. Gorsuch has spent more than a decade on the federal appeals bench in Denver, where he’s issued consistently conservative rulings, and he appeared on Trump’s list of potential candidates partly generated by the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation during the campaign.

Gorsuch’s confirmation will also be vindication for McConnell’s strategy of refusing to fill Scalia’s seat last year, instead leaving it open for the next president, even though few imagined then that that person would be Trump.

The showdown over the “nuclear option,” expected on the Senate floor Thursday, is likely to be accompanied by much hand-wringing from senators bemoaning the decay of the chamber’s traditions of bipartisanship and comity.

Yahoo Finance and reinvesting dividends Dear Mr. Berko: I’m writing for our 18-member investment club, which has been active since 1994. In 2008, we discovered Yahoo Finance.

It was great, and we used it to help us research stocks for our $677,000 portfolio.

It was first-rate and superbly laid out, with volumes of useful information in a logical and easy-to-understand format. We benefited individually and as a club. Months ago, Yahoo changed the site’s composition.

Now it’s a botched-up, useless mess. All of our members and other investors we’ve talked to say the site is rubbish and cluttered. We’ve called Yahoo, but no one answers the phone at its headquarters. I’ve been tasked to find another financial site, which is the reason for this letter. Could you recommend another financial site we could use?

Our club doesn’t reinvest dividends. Nine members voted to reinvest our dividends to buy stocks already in our portfolio, but nine say we should use our monthly dues (and raise them, too) to buy new stocks.

boundlessly better than the new site.

It’s also free, and that’s a good price.

NO FORMS DOESN’T MEAN NO TAXES

You may not receive a form at the end of the year listing everything you earned. That doesn’t mean you can skip paying taxes. You may owe the government on what you earned and could get in trouble if you don’t pay.

olic Academy get to where they want to be at by the end of the season, it’s a good bet that Monday’s match between them won’t be viewed as having been critical to that process.

But that said, there was still much to be learned by both sides as the Porters improved to 9-1 on the season after capturing a 25-15, 25-20 nonconference win over the host Hilltoppers.

Lockport opened the door by providing a large percentage of JCA’s points on serving errors, but the youthful Hilltoppers (4-5) returned the favor with a wide range of hitting miscues.

“We only served at 68 percent tonight,” Porters coach Nick Mraz said.

“But the thing that I committed to is that I’m never going to say, ‘Just keep it in.’ We’re going to be a great team

because we’re an aggressive serving team, or something like tonight happens. I’ve told the guys that I have faith in them to make the right decision. I’d rather see us serve 68 percent tonight so that come May, we’ll figure it out.

Just keeping it in doesn’t do anyone any good.”

Gillespie leaving Lewis to become ISU coach SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis women’s basketball coach Kristen Gillespie announced Monday that she has accepted the same position at Illinois State University, effective immediately, after two seasons with the Flyers.

“I cannot thank (Director of Athletics) Dr. (John) Planek, the administration and the entire Lewis community enough for the past two years,” Gillespie said. “To have been able to coach at the same university where my grandfather (Gordie Gillespie) got his collegiate coaching start is hard to put into words.

“I was extremely blessed to coach a group of incredible young women.

I am so proud of all of their accomplishments on and off the court. I will always cherish the memories that I have made here at Lewis.”

In her two years, the Flyers finished 51-12 (.810) including two NCAA tournament berths and one appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship game. In her first season, the Flyers won the GLVC East Division with an 18-0 record, helping Gillespie to 2016 GLVC Coach

“Today was the first day of spring break and it was a rainy Monday and they probably slept till past noon and that always worries anyone who’s a coach. But other than the serving, I think that we played well. Our block looked good, we were terminating the ball and our right-sides Justin (Elliott) and Anthony (Pfeiffer) were putting the ball away, so that was good.”

The Porters led nearly throughout with the closest that JCA was able to get were 1-1 ties in both sets. It was 9-6 in the opener after a kill by the team’s lone senior, Michael Tillmann.

But Lockport responded to that challenge with an 8-2 run that featured a block and a kill from Noah Speechley, additional kills from Justin Elliott (five kills) and Anthony Pfeiffer (five kills, seven assists) and a pair of aces from Dan Provenzano (nine assists, two aces).

In each of those two seasons, Gillespie coached the GLVC Player of the Year, Mariyah Brawner-Henley (2015-16) and Jessica Kelliher (201617). Both went on to earn All-America honors. Kelliher also was named the 2016 GLVC Freshman of the Year.

Freshman right-hander Grant Leonard (Lincoln-Way East) has pitched a shutout inning in his only appearance.

Georgetown hires Patrick Ewing as men’s basketball coach

WASHINGTON – Patrick Ewing spent years grinding as an NBA assistant in hopes of one day leading a team of his own.

Little did he know that all of that waiting would lead him back to Georgetown, the school he helped build into a national power as a player in the 1980s.

Georgetown hired Ewing on Monday, bringing the Hoyas legend back to campus to take over a program that had fallen on hard times over the past two seasons.

In announcing the hire, Georgetown called Ewing “the greatest men’s basketball player to ever don the Blue (and) Gray.” He led the Hoyas to the school’s only national championship in 1984 and now he takes over for the son of the man who coached him at Georgetown.

“My four years at Georgetown were the best of my life,” Ewing said in a statement issued by the school. “Georgetown is my home and it is a great honor for me to return to my alma mater and serve as the next head coach. I have been preparing to be a head coach for many years and can’t wait to return to the Hilltop.”

John Thompson III, the son of Big John Thompson, was fired last month after consecutive losing seasons.

town. Patrick Ewing was the first. He has come home.”

Ewing was a three-time All-American at Georgetown, a fearsome presence in the paint who led the Hoyas to three straight national title games. His dominance and Big John’s tenacity made the program an intimidating one while paving the way for a long line of great centers including Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo.

The blog Casual Hoya first reported the hire.

Thompson III coached Georgetown for 13 seasons, including a run to the Final Four in 2007 with future NBA players Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert. He went 278-151 with eight appearances in the NCAA tournament, but was just 29-36 over the past two years, prompting the school’s proud and vocal fan and alumni base to advocate for his dismissal.

Despite his father continuing to hold considerable clout within the university, Thompson III was fired.

An extended search took place before school officials ultimately decided to hire Ewing, who will have to quickly acclimate himself to the complex web of recruiting and academic eligibility requirements that are not a part of the NBA coach’s concerns.

Now it will be up to Ewing to restore Georgetown to the place in the college basketball landscape that he brought the Hoyas to as a player.

Sox, Tigers to try Opening Day again Tuesday

The White Sox’s season opener with the Tigers on Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field was rained out and rescheduled for 1:10 p.m. Tuesday.

The game, which was scheduled for 3:10 p.m. with Jose Quintana opposing the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, was called off at 4:51. All tickets for the game, used or not used, are good for admission Tuesday, which was an open date. The Sox announced parking will be free for fans.

Rain had been forecast for much of the day, but the Sox still tried to get it in despite rain that began around noon.

During a break from the wet stuff, both teams went through opening ceremo-

nies, with Sox players entering the field in Mustang convertibles and introduced individually. Tigers players also were introduced, REO Speedwagon band members played the National Anthem and 2005 World Series hero Scott Podsednik threw out the first pitch.

After that, however, the players ducked into their clubhouses and did not return. More rain followed, dooming the opener for another day.

“We waited as long as we could, but we feel like we didn’t have a large enough window,’’ manager Rick Renteria said.

The Sox announced, “in consideration for how the postponement might disrupt the schedules of fans” that fans holding tickets for the opener also can exchange unused tickets for a free low-

er box or outfield reserve ticket for any home game, excluding May 29-31 vs. the Red Sox, June 24 vs. the A’s, June 26-29 vs. the Yankees, July 18-19 vs. the Dodgers and July 26-27 vs. the Cubs, based on availability.

Rodon update: General manager Rick Hahn indicated left-hander Carlos Rodon could miss another five or six weeks as he works his way back from upper biceps bursitis.

Rodon, who is in Arizona, is on a throwing program and will be re-evaluated Monday. He made one start during spring training and would be starting from ground zero again. Hahn said Rodon is “feeling good.”

“If there’s the least bit of discomfort or any stuff like that, we’re going to take a step back and start this thing

over,” Hahn said. “As I told Carlos directly, there’s zero reason for us to rush through this.”

“Surreal feeling” for Covey: Dylan Covey, being groomed as a fill-in in the rotation, stayed in Arizona on Sunday and threw about 75 pitches as he builds up endurance. Because of the rainout Monday, the Sox will need a fifth starter.

Covey, a Rule 5 pick from the A’s, originally was scheduled to throw in Arizona on Monday, but making his first Opening Day roster was so “surreal,” he asked to be in Chicago, so he threw Sunday instead.

“It’s my first one and they understood and made adjustments to the schedule to get me here,” he said. “I appreciate that.”

To tank or not to tank, that really wasn’t much of a question as far as general manager Rick Hahn was concerned when he mapped out a plan to rebuild the White Sox. “Here’s the rub with that,” Hahn said.

“There’s been a lot of successful rebuilds, even in our town. ... Many of them were predicated on bottoming out and getting high picks and spending good money and spending it well internationally.”

It all makes sense, and fielding a weak roster worked for the Cubs, who lost a lot and didn’t mind and stockpiled talent via the draft, as Hahn pointed out.

“The higher you pick, the better off you are,” Hahn said, stating the obvious. “That said, we’re a little bit different from some of the other clubs that had to embark on this process.”

That’s because the Sox’s roster wasn’t “totally barren of big league talent” when the rebuild began. Hahn said the rebuild could move more quickly if current players perform well now and enhance their trade value.

“So it’s not all black and white,” he said. “We don’t have to pick first, that’s not the intent of this 2017 season.

It certainly isn’t the focus of (manager) Ricky (Renteria) and the players.

“There’s value in that clubhouse that we aren’t just going to give away in the pursuit of the first pick of the draft.”

“Yeah, what’s wrong with that? Right now we’re 0-0,” said Robertson, who pitched for the Yankees in the 2009 World Series. “If we finish 90-and-whatever, we have a good chance. There’s no reason we can’t do it. I’ve seen other teams get in the playoffs that you wouldn’t expect.

You just have to have a ticket to get it.”

There’s nothing wrong for the Sox’s big picture with having a motivated team. As Hahn said, the better they perform, the better for their plan.

Robertson has two years remaining on his contract at $12 million this season and $13 million in 2018. He was signed before the 2015 season as a needed piece for what the Sox thought was a contender.

And he could be dealt to a contender if the Sox find themselves far away from 90 wins at the trade deadline Aug. 1.

“That’s not my decision,” Robertson said. “I’m here to help my team win ball games. If I am traded, so be it. I can only do what I can do, and that’s show up and help finish ball games.”

ST. LOUIS – The 2015 Cubs found their identity during an August sweep of the San Francisco Giants. They then went on to the National League Championship Series.

Last year’s team identity evolved over time, but it was shaped by Kyle Schwarber’s knee injury during the first week of the season and a slump before the All-Star break. That team had more than enough wherewithal to overcome those two challenges and go on to win the World Series.

This year? Although the Cubs have brought back essentially the same cast of characters from last year, team identities always change.

“This is a new journey, a new group,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said Sunday before the Cubs lost their season opener, 4-3, to the Cardinals. “I know we’re pretty much all the

Joliet urologist seeks better remedy for men with enlarged prostate

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Half of men have enlarged prostate glands by their mid50s, and virtually all those older than age 70 have them.

The trouble begins when the gland gets large enough that it begins to block the urethra, which is the tube urine passes through on its way out of the body, or pushes up on the bladder.

The condition is benign prostate hyperplasia, which also can cause problems with ejaculation.

Having BPH can be infuriating at best.

But Joliet urologist Dr. Gregory Andros, of Advanced Urology Associates, said he’s been using a new procedure to correct BPH called UroLift and is getting better results than he has seen with other nonsurgical methods of treatment.

Andros’ clinic was just named a Center of Excellence by UroLift in using the procedure to treat men with BPH – the first clinic in the Midwest and the Great Lakes region to be honored with the designation.

One of his patients, Mark Cullen, of Joliet, said he underwent the procedure last fall and is thrilled with it.

He even recommended it to a family member, whom he said also had successful results.

“I’ve had trouble the last five years,” said Cullen, 59. “It made it almost impossible to pee. This disease is terrible.”

Men who have the condition, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, can experience a strong and sudden urge to urinate, a slowed or delayed start of the urinary stream, dribbling at the end of urination, an inability to urinate, incomplete emptying of the bladder, incontinence and having to get up several times a night to urinate.

Before the procedure, Cullen said, he had trouble getting urination started. Once it began, it was not a good stream, and then it would suddenly stop. He related it to a real-life home repair situation, where plumbing valves are difficult to turn on and off. Now, he said, the problem is gone.

“It feels like you are using a new set of valves,” Cullen said. “It’s easier to turn them on and off.”

but when they didn’t work satisfactorily, Andros recommended the new procedure.

The prostate gland is part of the reproductive system and makes up the fluid portion of semen. The gland goes through a couple of growth phases – one during puberty, when it doubles in size, and another that begins around the age of 25 and continues throughout life.

In a man’s 50s, Andros said, the prostate can begin pushing up on the bladder and squeezing in on the ure-

thra. Medications can be effective to relieve symptoms of BPH, he said, but many times they have side effects patients do not like.

There are many minimally invasive procedures used to treat the condition as well, Andros said, but they also can have side effects or are not as effective as they should be.

“When you see multiple different treatments for one condition,” Andros said, “it usually means they’re not that good.”

He began learning about UroLift a few years ago and has performed the procedure in his office for more than two years. The procedure uses implants made of a suture material that loop around the prostate gland and physically pull it away from the urethra and the bladder, allowing a good flow of urine and semen.

Patients are put in an intravenous “twilight” with propofal for the 30-minute outpatient procedure, and when they wake up, Andros said, they

are comfortable. He advises a couple of days of taking things easy after the procedure before patients return to their daily lives.

The differences Andros has seen in his patients after UroLift include improved urinary streams and strengths, reduced nocturea and a more complete emptying of the bladder, among other improvements.

The men are able to sleep through the night, travel easier, have less leakage and enjoy a better quality of life and health in general, Andros said.

Men are not eligible for the procedure if the size of their prostate is more than 80 grams or if their bladder has become too thickened, among other reasons.

Most insurers cover UroLift, Andros said, and Medicare does as well.

“Men that have an enlarged prostate should not ignore their symptoms,” Andros said. “Intervening early gives better outcomes.”

Anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen will help alleviate swelling and pain. If necessary, more powerful anti-inflammatories are available by prescription. Ice compresses applied for 15 to 20 minutes every four to six hours, for three to five days, also can be quite effective in managing the swelling and pain.

Less frequently, it becomes necessary to drain the excess fluid from the bursa with a needle and syringe, a procedure known as aspiration. If we suspect infection rather than injury plays a role, we will send the fluid out for analysis.

In many cases, bursitis will resolve itself over the course of a few weeks or, perhaps, months. In some instances, though, the pain may be persistent. When patients don’t get relief from rest, icing and anti-inflammatories, the next step can be a cortisone injection into the site. Cortisone usually provides speedy relief from pain and can be targeted to a specific location.

We have found that gradually adding a gentle stretching program and some easy strengthening exercises can aid recovery.

An elbow band, which reduces the pressure of the muscles in the forearm, can help with pain. Your family doctor will be able to help you with all of these.

Dear Doctor: I played a pretty rough game of tennis a few weeks ago and developed an ache in my right elbow that turned out to be bursitis. What can I do to ease the pain?

Dear Reader: Our skeletons are marvels of mechanical engineering. They create a scaffold for our muscles, skin and circulatory system, shelter our inner organs, and provide the leverage that makes it possible for us to move about. Wherever our bones meet, particularly in our joints, tiny fluid-filled sacs known as bursa act as cushions. They allow bones and connective tissue to glide easily over one another with minimal friction.

When injury, repetitive movement or sustained pressure causes one or more bursa to become inflamed, the resulting pain and tenderness are characteristic of a condition known as bursitis.

Age can play a role in bursitis, as can rheumatoid arthritis. The pain arises when an injured bursa fills with excess fluid and then presses against surrounding tissues and nerves.

The most common locations for bursitis are the hip, knee, shoulder and, as you have discovered, the elbow. The condition is diagnosed via a physical examination of the area, and tests such as an X-ray or an MRI. When a physician suspects infection may play a role in bursitis, she or he will take some fluid from the affected area for testing.

Since we’re not sure what treatment you already may have received, we’ll run down our approach with our patients. We begin by addressing the underlying cause, which is inflammation. Rest is important. Bursitis can be brought on by a specific activity, such as tennis for bursitis in the elbow, or throwing a ball or lifting a toddler for bursitis in the shoulder. We recommend that our

South’s two-no-trump rebid indicated a balanced 12-14 points; although there was a strong case for his rebidding three clubs. Then, over three spades, South can raise to four spades with a hand that is not slam-suitable. Here, however, with those wonderful clubs, South should continue with four clubs. North would control-bid four diamonds, and South would bid four spades, making it plain that he has no heart control. North, with his singleton, might jump straight to six spades, or could cautiously go via four notrump.

Admittedly, bidding like that helps the opponents find the best opening lead, but here it does not matter. Even after two rounds of hearts, making dummy ruff with the spade eight, declarer cashes the spade king and queen, crosses to his hand with, say, a diamond, draws East’s last two trumps and claims.

With slam interest, the king in partner’s side suit will usually be as good as the ace.
